The Red Dog zinc-lead deposit, said to be the world's second largest, is located inside the Arctic Circle in northwestern Alaska - a location too harsh and remote for some mining companies but just right for Cominco Ltd. The complex has been in operation since November 1989 and is producing 508 kt/a (560,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate, 109 kt/a (120,000 stpy) of leadconcentrate and 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of an Imperial Smelter Feed, a combined zinc-lead mixture that is too small to separate. All of this concentrate production derives from a relatively modest mine production of 5.4 kt/ad (6000 stpd) extracted from a surface pit. Despite being a high-grade zinc-lead deposit, Red Dog's metallurgy is complex, requiring a very fine grind and use of column cells for flotation. The Red Dog complex is located in the DeLong Mountains. They are characterized by eight stack and folded thrust blocks that contain sedimentary and igneous rocks. The Red Dog deposit is located in the second lowest thrust and ist hosted by late Mississippian to Permian age black shale, the Ikalukrok member of the Kuna formation. The Red Dog mining complex is operated by Cominco Alaska, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, Inc, which, in turn, is owned by Cominco Ltd. In 1980, the deposit region was acquired by NANA Corp. as part of the Native American Claims Act Settlement of 1971. NANA is one of 12 such Native Corporations in Alaska. In 1982, NANA and Cominco American signed a develop¬ment agreement and formed Cominco Alaska to manage the project.

Although auriferous beach and fore-dune sands at Five Mile Beach south of Okarito township had been intensively mined by hand and primative mechanical methods drilling of the sandspit by the Gold Development Corporation in 1929 indicated that the grade and quantity of undisturbed black and grey sand below the water table was sufficient to support a mining operation. Worked sand above the water table also contained fair prospects. The Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Dredging Co Ltd, was formed and an hydraulically powered, bucket ladder, sluice box dredge built. In 13 years of operation (1931 - 1943) the dredge returned 556.39 kg (17 890 oz) of gold at a recovered grade of 225.4 mg/m3. A total of ú42 000 was distributed as dividends on the ú30 000 capital investment. Recent drill and bulk sampling at the northern end of the beach has confirmed that reworking of the historic tailings by a modern gravity recovery plant would not be economic.

Presently,Many long-wall fully-mechanized faces in shallow depth coal seams are below room and pillar goaf in Shendong mining area. When the working face is advanced out of concentrated coal pillar in upper room and pillar goaf, strong strata behaviors often cause support crushing accident. Aiming at a support crushing accident which happened in Shigetai coal mine of Shenhua group in Shendong mining area, this paper analyses the stress transfer process while mining out of concentrated coal pillar by numerical simulation software FLAC3D. According to the feature, simplifying the roof of upper room and pillar goaf as supporting-beam structure explains mechanism of large area collapse in room and pillar goaf roof. Based on the feature of supporting-beam structure, deep-hole blasting concentrated coal pillar technology is proposed to control the strong strata behaviors in Shigetai coal mine. The blasting control effect is confirmed through characteristics of strata behaviors, growth circumstance of ground crack and multi-point extensometer monitoring results. By using control technology, Shigetai coal mine has been successfully avoided support crushing accident.

Rotary oscillation of the mold has been used to produce mechanical stirring of the melt during unidirectional solidification. Al-Cu alloys (1 to 4 wt pct Cu) were solidified to study the influence of alloy composition, temperature at which intensive cooling was initiated, and intensity of stirring on the temperature distribution in the sample, the resulting structure, and the copper microsegregation at the columnar to equiaxed transition. The Proposed explanation for the equiaxed solidification in stirred castings consists of the melting off of dendrite fragments, their partial remelting in hotter liquid, and the subsequent growth of the surviving part when the temperature of the melt is lowered. This may result in the formation of a crystal network, which can stop the growth of the columnar crystals and produce the equiaxed zone. It has long been known and many times affirmed that ultrasonic vibrations or relative motion of liquid and solid can significantly reduce the length of the columnar zone and refine the grains in the equiaxed zone in ingots and castings. Because of the technological importance of these phenomena many investigations have been conducted in which ultrasonic energy or mechanical vibration,1-6 electromagnetic stirring,7"10'17 magnetic stirring,"'12 or mechanical stirring13'14 were used to produce the relative liquid-solid motion. More recently, the question of the importance of natural (or thermal) convection has been raised.15-l7 Several possible mechanisms have been suggested.l,8,18-20 They can be divided into two main groups. The first group includes such nucleation hypotheses as nucleation frequency enhancement due to cavitation at the mold wall or other surfaces; cavita-tion in the body of the liquid resulting from the pressure wave, or an agglomeration mechanism, which involves the formation of nuclei by the accretion of subcritical nuclei. The second group considers the grain-refining action to be due to crystal multiplication phenomena such as the removal of the dendrite fragments by viscous forces or by a high-pressure cycle following cavitation or by a melting-off process. Sbme recent investigations give good experimental support to the melting-off proposa1.21-23 The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of mechanical stirring during the unidirectional solidification on the structure of alloy samples and on the solidification variables. The motion of the liquid was produced by rotary oscillation of the mold around its vertical axis.

At least one US senator believes that the events of Sept. 11, 2001 made many citizens see the need for the country to become more self-reliant on its growing energy needs. Even before that tragic day, however, the Bush administration was making a strong push to open up more public land for energy and natural resource development.

"Conzal Mine was not meeting production targets in 2013, and it was established that this was caused by the inability of the load haul dump machines (LHDs) to tram the required tonnages. An investigation of the LHD productivity was therefore conducted to identify the inhibiting factors. This was accomplished by carrying out a literature review on LHD operations to gain in-depth knowledge and conducting observations in the working environment. The relevant information and data on the LHD type used at Conzal was also acquired.The major inhibitor was found to be excessively long tramming distances in all the sections of the mine. The one-way tramming distances were all significantly greater than the 90 m set in the mine’s code of practice (COP), with the Main Shafts section having the longest average one-way tramming distance of 260 m. The other inhibitor was LHD utilization, which in 2013 was only 47% against a target of 70%. Simulation of the LHD operation, taking these two factors into account, showed that production could be increased by more than 100%. As a result, it was recommended that conveyor belts should be extended regularly in order to keep tramming distances within the recommended one-way distance of 90 m. In addition, utilization can be improved by minimizing employee absenteeism as well as by modifying the travelling routes such that LHDs do not encounter unnecessary delays.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc. The diffusivities of oxygen and sulfur in liquid iron have heen determined hy a capillary technique in which the surface concentrations of the solutes were established by means of appropriate H2/H2 and H2S/H, gas mixtures. Total diffusate and concentration profile results are shown to be in good accord, yielding for- 1560 and Supporting results at 1660°C are also presented. The conditions necessary to avoid gas transport control in this type of experiment are discussed. IN spite of their importance in understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of refining reactions, the dif-fusivities of oxygen and sulfur in liquid iron are not well established. Accordingly, as a first step in studies of rates of solute absorption from the gas phase into liquid iron, new measurements of these diffusivities have been made and are presented in this paper. The only published results for the diffusion of sulfur in pure liquid iron are those of Kawai.' He used a diffusion couple technique in which two cylindrical specimens, one containing sulfur and the other with negligible sulfur concentration, were joined together and held in a refractory capillary. After an experiment, the sample was quenched and the concentration distribution of the solute determined. Kawai recognized that significant changes in solute distribution occurred during melting and freezing and he attempted to correct the concentration profiles for these effects to give a sulfur diffusivity of 4.6 x 10-6 sq cm per sec at 1560°C. The method of correction, however, was not rigorous and the uncertainty in this result cannot be easily assessed. Koslov et a1.2 have reported the diffusivity of oxygen in iron as 7.8 x 10"3 sq cm per sec at 1660°C. This value appears to be unreasonably high but, unfortunately, details of their experiments are not available. Shurygin and Kryuk have used the rotating disc method for a study of oxygen diffusion in liquid iron. In their experiments a silica disc was rotated in liquid iron containing oxygen, and the rate of formation of liquid iron silicate was determined by measuring the decrease in weight of the disc. On the assumption that the rate of dissolution was controlled by the diffusion of oxygen in the iron, the diffusion coefficient was computed to be 5.2 x sq cm per sec at 1550°C. However, the Levich equation, which was used to interpret the rate data, was originally de- rived for the case of mass transfer between a solid disc and a single-phase liquid. The hydrodynamic and diffusion boundary layers in the iron stirred by a disc, via coupling of the silicate melt, may be appreciably different from those predicted by Levich's equations. Recently, Novokhatskiy and Ershov, using an identical experimental method to that of Shurygin and Kryuk, obtained a diffusivity for oxygen in liquid iron of 1.22 x 104 sq cm per sec at 1550°C: no reasons were offered for the disagreement. Schwerdtfeger5 has also recently studied the diffusivity of oxygen in liquid iron. He reacted shallow melts of liquid iron, 0.5 to 1.0 cm deep and contained in high-purity alumina crucibles, with appropriate H20-HZ-He mixtures. The total sample was analyzed, without sectioning, to obtain the average concentration of diffusate. A value at 1610°C of D = 12(3) x 10-5 sq cm per sec was obtained from the results of twenty experiments.= Oxygen profile measurements, which were carried out in three additional experiments using long capillaries and the semiinfinite boundary conditions, indicated a diffusivity about half that computed from the shallow bath experiments. Possible sources of error in Schwerdtfeger's study will be discussed later in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The essential arrangement of the diffusion cell is shown in Fig. 1. The liquid iron was contained in an alumina capillary, 3 to 4 mm diam and 3 to 9 cm long, which was supported by a hollow alumina pedestal and this whole assembly was held within a movable alumina reaction tube. Management of solid mine wastes, particularly waste rock, requires careful planning to reduce the likelihood of sulfide oxidation, and generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Waste management strategies must focus on obtaining a thorough understanding of the environmental characteristics of future waste rock materials. In this study, a waste management strategy for characterising underground waste rock was developed at a polymetallic underground mine in western Tasmania to determine which materials were appropriate for surficial placement. The criteria for surficial placement set by the regulator were that materials had to be non-acid forming and non-metalliferous. A range of cost-effective field-based tools, mineralogical assessments and mineral chemistry techniques were used on a suite of representative drill core material to determine an appropriate waste management strategy. Ultimately, a modified geochemistry–mineralogy–texture–geometallurgy (GMTG) approach was designed, whereby geoenvironmental focused logging and simple prescreening tools such as paste pH and sulfur analyses were used at stage-one; routine acid base accounting and leachate tests at stage-two; and validation tools including X-ray diffractometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at stage-three. This approach should be considered for other mine sites at early and operational life-of-mine stages with similar deposit characteristics, to ensure correct screening and placement of potentially hazardous waste materials in suitable above-ground waste repositories or mined-out mine sections.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2017. THE CONNECTING link between Phelps Dodge and the copper mines at Bisbee and Morenci was a Canadian-born mining engineer and metallurgist named James Douglas. Judged by almost any standard, Douglas was an extraordinary man. Like John Muir of the California red- woods, he had in his blood "the heather and bog juices of Scotland," and the rugged virtues of a singularly great race. His father, for whom he was named, was a graduate of Edinburgh University, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, and a man of rash and adventurous spirit. Extremely catholic in his intellectual interests and attainments, he was unusually skilled in his profession, certain-sometimes to the point of disastrous stubbornness--of his own judgments and decisions, careless of life or fortune where duty or moral issues were involved, and always deeply moved by the sufferings and misfortunes of his fellow men. The career of the senior Douglas included a curious medley of novel and adventurous experiences-prolonged hunger and cold while acting as surgeon on a Greenland

In this work the electrochemical combustion of dissolved organic species in a single compartment cell containing a titanium mesh cathode and a boron doped diamond anode has been studied, The organic molecules involved were complexing agents such as EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) or NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid) used in metal plating shops and bright nickel plating bath additives, From batch experiments, it is shown that complete decomplexing of EDTA and NIA is feasible. Complete TOC (Total Organic Carbon) removal from solutions containing 0.01 M EDTA, 0.02 M NTA and bright nickel plating bath additives could also be achieved. Recycling experiments show that decomplexing of EDTA and NTA solutions can be obtained at an average electrical energy input of ~20kWh.kg-1 of complexing agent. Decomplexing rates of respectively 3.l3 mmol.Ah-1 for EDTA and NTA have been obtained, The Instantaneous Current Efficiency (ICE) was 71% for EDTA and 95% by NTA, Simultaneous recovery of Cu from a 0.01 M Cu-EDTA solution has also been evaluated. A solution (1.8 dm3) containing 0.01 M EDTA and 528 ppm of Cu was treated in a single compartment cell at a current density of 2 A.dm-2. 73% of the TOC could be removed and a final copper concentration of 8 ppm was obtained.

To initiate this project a critical evaluation of the pre-sent phosphate mining industry in the Western phosphate field was conducted. Mines were visited, mine operators were interviewed and pertinent literature studied. Three phosphate mining enterprises were reviewed and mining cost estimates prepared. The report discusses the present state of phosphate processing, rock alteration and location. New ideas and concepts are proposed to improve the recovery of phosphate rock from the Phosphoria formation. The report evaluates two variations to the present phosphate open pit mining methods, which were developed to improve the economics of mining phosphate and to better accomplish necessary reclamation and accelerate the time for environmental recovery. A material handling system using conveyor haulage will eliminate the need for trucks. Terrace haulback utilizes safety benches to haul and dispose of waste in the mined out pit. Ore will be removed from the pit via an inclined, cable-supported mobile conveyor.

Many studies have been made of the microflotation of quartz (1,2,3,4,5,6) and alumina (3,5,6, 7,8) using various anionic and cationic hetero- polar hydrocarbon surfactants as collectors. A few studies have been made on these minerals using amphoteric hydrocarbon collectors ( 9,10, 11,12) and only a few studies have been made on the use of fluorocarbon surfactants as flotation collectors (13,14). The present investigation compares microflotation response of the two minerals in hydocarbon and fluorocarbon collector systems of the anionic, cationic and amphoteric types. An attempt is made to relate flotation response of the minerals to their electrokinetic behavior and the pKa values of the collectors.

"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H. The industrial sand industry has been exploring new techniques to reduce dust. One company was experimenting with adding water during bagging operations to the surface of the hag, and into the product as it flowed into the bag. The Bureau of Mines, using instantaneous dust sampling instruments, measured the effectiveness of three methods of adding water. Results indicated that various types of water sprays applied in carefully controlled amounts could reduce dust up to 50% at worker locations at the bagging machine and inside a railroad boxcar. This report also discusses constraints such as product handling, customer acceptance, cold weather problems, dust collector performance, and other areas.

The geology of Wyoming has been compared to some of the richest precious metal producing regions of the world including South Africa, Western Australia, and the Superior Province of Canada. These areas are all underlain by ancient cratons that contain some of the oldest rocks on the surface of the earth. But unlike the other cratons, the Wyoming craton (also termed the Wyoming Province) has been greatly modified by Laramide tectonics which thrust slices of the ancient craton through younger Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks. Unfortunately, the nature of the Laramide tectonics left vast regions of the craton at the bottom of the Tertiary basins unavailable to direct examination, but the exposed slices in the mountain cores contain some of the best exposures of Precambrian rock in the world. The cores of these uplifts contain extensive regions of relatively unmineralized gneiss and granite that include scattered fragmented supracrustal belts formed of metamorphosed volcanic, plutonic, and sedimentary rock. Some of these supracrustal belts exhibit similarities to the gold- and nickel- rich terranes of Western Australia. Yet these areas remain incompletely explored. Archean (> 2.5 Ga) gold deposits within the Wyoming craton are primarily confined to greenstone belts and related terranes. These supracrustal belts include relatively narrow vein and shear zone deposits with strike lengths of tens of feet to more than a mile. Some exceptional deposits possess widths of greater than 15 feet to possibly as much as 300 feet, but the majority have widths of± 5 feet. These belts include Cu, Ag, W, Fe, and Cr mineralization, asbestos and pegmatites, and anomalous Ni and Sri in addition to gold. The Proterozoic terrane (<2.5 Ga) exposed in the cores of mountain ranges in southeastern Wyoming includes a thick miogeosynclinal metasedimentary succession which unconformably lies on the Archean craton. These metasedimentary rocks are separated from a predominantly metavolcanic terrane to the south by a major Precambrian suture, or shear zone. The metasedimentary rocks north of the shear include quartzite-hosted stratabound Cu-Ag-Au deposits, Au-Ag veins, and Witwatersrand-type metaconglomerates with isolated gold anomalies. The suture includes scattered base and precious metal deposits in shear zone cataclastics. South of the shear zone, the metavolcanic terrane includes scattered volcanogenic Zn-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposits, at least one Cu-Au porphyry, and two large layered mafic complexes. The northern edge of one of these layered intrusives yielded some platinum and palladium to miners at the beginning of the 20th century. Phanerozoic sediments host many precious metal anomalies. Some Au-REE anomalies occur in Cambrian conglomerates. Ag-Cu-Zn stratabound deposits are found in bleached Jurassic redbeds in the Overthrust Belt of western Wyoming. The broad Wyoming basins include many enigmatic gold occurrences and anomalies that can only partially be explained by detrital transport in fluvial systems. Many of these anomalies were probably geochemically transported and precipitated. Rocks of Late Cretaceous age along the flanks of the uplifts have numerous black sand deposits. These paleobeach placers contain concentrations of detrital heavy minerals with anomalous titanium, rare earths, and in some cases gold. Gigantic base and precious metal deposits are associated with scattered composite intrusives in the Absaroka Mountains in northwestern Wyoming. This deeply incised volcanic plateau includes several Tertiary age copper porphyry deposits with significant Cu, Mo, Ti, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag resources that rival the porphyry districts of the Basin and Range Province. In the Black Hills of northeastern Wyoming, disseminated Au-Th-REE mineralization is found in association with fenitized alkalic igneous rock. In addition to disseminated mineralization-scattered gold, fluorite, rare earth and copper veins; lead, zinc, and silver replacement lodes; and tin pegmatites are found in this region.

After months of negotiations, the U. S. has agreed to buy between 6000 and 7000 long tons of Bolivian tin now stockpiled at Peruvian and Chilean ports, at $1.175 per lb, f.o.b. South American Ports. Harry A. McDonald of the Reconstruction Finance Corp. signed the contract with Victor Andrade, Bolivian ambassador. The Mercantile Metals and Ore Corp., of New York City, acted as the agent of Bolivia&apos;s Banco Minero in negotiating the deal. The contract is a short term one. Throughout the talks, the U. S. refused to make a long term agreement because of the possibility that Bolivia will soon nationalize its mines. The Bolivians desired to sell the U. S. 18,000 tons during a one-year pact. The price agreed upon is roughly the same as with Malayan producers. In the meantime, American Smelting & Refining Co., signed over control of its operations to the Bolivian Government. The formal act of leasing the mines to the Bolivian Government follows the announcement last July by the company that it was closing operations because of high costs. Contract terms were not disclosed.

"The Phelps lease in Jasper County, Missouri, was first examined by the Bureau of Mines3/ in December 1943, at the request of Thomas Phelps of Joplin, the lessee. Owing to urgent war requirements for zinc and lead and evidence of favorable geological conditions and past productivity of adjoining properties, it,considered justifiable to explore for extensions of known ore deposits and possible undiscovered ones. In August 1944, funds were allotted for this work, which was started January 5, 1945, under the direction of the author.The provision of facilities and storage space on the property by the lessee during drilling operations is gratefully acknowledged.The Phelps lease is on land belonging to the Rex Mining & Smelting Co. It lies immediately southeast of the city limits of Joplin, Mo. It may be reached by going cast from Joplin on paved 20th street to half a mile beyond Range Line road. Twentieth street is the northern boundary line of the property, which consists of approximately 145 acres and includes the W 1/2, NE1/4, and all of the E ½. NW1/4 except 15 acres along the west side of that quarter section, of sec. 18, T. 27 N., R. 32 W., as shown on figure 1.The property is part of a 1,000-acre tract owned by the Rex Mining & Smelting Co., Paul D. Porter, president, Joplin, Mo. The lease was acquired by Thomas Phelps of Joplin, in 1937. At present the lease is controlled by a recently formed association known as the Eureka Products Co., Charles W. Madison, manager, Kansas City, Mo.Dependable skilled mine labor is scarce in the district at present, but there seems to be enough transient mine labor for small operations. The prevailing wages of the district run from 55 cents to 95 cents per hour for various types of mine labor.Living accommodations and markets to supply all domestic requirements are available in Joplin.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the and that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

Despite of significant cost advantages and the positive expierence roof bolting is limited up to 15-20% of all workings at the Cuzbass mines. The low level of application of the technology is the result of specific mining and geological conditions and defects of organization and technical support. When analysing mining and geological conditions of development working maintenance and geomechanical aspects the necessity of changing of technological schemes of preparation and extraction of mine sections is obvious. The prospects of large-scaled transferring from frame support to roof bolting are connected with introduction the technology of support with the help of non- expanding bolt classes including bolts with mineral filler fixation. The design of bolters with mineral filler fixation is given here. The results of testing of bolt load characteristics in artificial holes and in situ are proved the technology efficient. For increasing of drilling works efficiency it is necessary to master the production of oilless compressor and heading machines with the manipulator. For bolt dimension forecast it is recommended to use the relations of measured parameters of "dome" to roof shifts. Effective monitoring of rock pressure in the junctions is connected with the use of support of conventional bolts together with bolts of deep installation with simultaneous supporting of face ends with special mechanical sets, which compensate face length change.

Since gold was first discovered, mining development in the West Australian goldfields has been heavily dependent on the location of groundwater both for potable and mineral processing supplies . The location of adequate and economic sources of water has been a constant challenge to both explorers and developers throughout the history of the goldfields. The provision of a piped supply from Mundaring in 1903 greatly alleviated pressure on scarce resources, lowered mining costs and permitted the orderly development of infrastructure. However, increases in the demand for water resulting from new mineral discoveries over the past three decades has led to renewed pressures for more local supplies to be established. Wide-ranging groundwater exploration took place in the late 1960&apos;s and early 1970&apos;s, also, more recently, in support of intensified gold exploration. The collation and interpretation of the hydrogeological data from the whole goldfields region indicates that despite a low mean annual rainfall of between 180 and 350 mm, quite marked differences exist between the rates of groundwater recharge in different parts of the area, In general, these can be shown to diminish in a southerly direction contrary to a trend towards increases in annual rainfall. Recharge rates are related mainly to differences in rock weathering pattern, geological structure and physiography. The same differences have controlled the pattern of groundwater salinity and the magnitude of groundwater storages associated with the palaeodrainages. In the vicinity of the northern and western watersheds with the Gascoyne, the superficial sediments tend to be thin, may have calcrete in the section and contain moderate storages of brackish or even fresh water. This contrasts with the lower regions of the palaeodrainages where calcrete is absent and deeper erosion has permitted the accumulation of relatively large thicknesses of fine-grained sediments which are saturated with hypersaline water and constitute substantial storages. Account must be taken of these characteristics if water supply sources are to be optimised to meet the growing demands for groundwater in the region.
