A group of 23 underweight men weighing less than 50 kg were subjected to an acclimatization procedure in which the work rate was gradually increased from 35Watts on the first day to 70Watts on the eighth day. Excessively high body temperatures and heart rates were observed on these subjects throughout the acclimatization period and on their performance they must be rated as heat-intolerant. It can be concluded that such underweight men should not be subjected to acclimatization at such high work rates and that they should not be allocated to tasks involving these rates in a hot environment. The fact that their body surface areas are inadequate to enable them to get rid of the internal heat produced during strenuous work plus their low work capacities are the major reasons for their inability to tolerate heat.

There has been a recent revival of interest in concentrated coal/water slurries as a substi¬tute for fuel oil or for coal/oil mixtures, particularly in electric power generation. The idea is not a new one. Coal/water slurries were transported by pipeline in the U.S. in the early nineteen-sixties, and the Black Mesa coal pipeline has been in operation for several years, while in Germany, coal/water slurries were being burnt for power generation in the early nineteen-seventies, as described by Merten and Höner (1972). Since coal is not a pure substance but a carbonaceous mixture, the different chemical and physical behavior of coal/water dispersions from different deposits must be understood in order to optimize the properties of the result¬ing slurry fuels. Since minerals which are minor constituents of coal may also strongly affect slurry properties, coal chemistry may vary considerably even within a single deposit. Thus it is unlikely that there will be a single formula for optimizing the slurry properties of all coals, and even the answer for coal from a single source may change with time.

Consistent increase has been the mark of North American potassium (K) consumption. In 23 of the last 25 years there was upward progress The pace of usage has quickened in the past three or four years This, together with a predicted accelerated future demand, has created unprecedented interest -and activity in the potash industry. Potassium enjoyed a ninefold increase in consumption from 1940 to the present time in North America (Figure 1). Since 1950, it increased from just over a million tons of potash (K20) annually to nearly three million tons in 1964. World-wide usage exclusive of mainland China is now about 10 million metric tons. Some predictions call for another doubling in consumption in the next 10 to 15 years, About 20 percent of the four million tons of K20 produced in North America is now exported overseas and this percentage is likely to increase in the years ahead. Ten years ago, exports represented only 3-1/2 percent of total K2O production from this continent.

The application of digitization to operations and logistics is commonplace. From advanced data analytics to intelligent networks, digitization offers tremendous opportunities to create value, raise the efficiency of production processes, and reduce emissions. Several manufacturing industries have already implemented solutions to good effect by using digitization. Mining companies, for example, are using historical data about equipment health to predict potential failures, while aeronautics and automotive companies are using robotics and end-to-end digital twins to improve their design and production processes. Not surprisingly, first adopters of digitization in many industries have gained an edge over their competition. The cement and aggregate industry can better manage the enormous energy consumption, rising cost challenges, inefficient uses of raw material, logistic problems, emissions, and overall process complexity that are inherent in their operations by doing the same. This paper presents the results of a literature review and analysis and conveys the challenges for adaptation and implementation of digitization and artificial intelligence (AI) in the cement and aggregate production industry.

THERE seems to be in the public mind, and even in the minds of some coal-operators not experienced in mines subject to dust-explosions, a feeling that there has been something mysterious at the bottom of a number of recent American colliery-explosions. It has been declared in cases of accidents in mines regarded as particularly well equipped, in which every preventive precaution was said to have been taken, that the explosions were incomprehensible, and resulted from causes beyond the present knowledge of the practical coal-operator. But it is safe to say that no explosion has taken place which could not be explained by reasons well understood by most operators. The LT. S. Geological Survey Test Laboratory, recently inaugurated at Pittsburg for the reported purpose of investigating scientifically the matter of explosions in mines, will discover no new explanation of explosions. It call, however, co-ordinate the previous investigations of similar boards in England and on the Continent; and it may do a vast amount of good by promulgating widely, and in a form comprehensible by the most unlettered miner, certain facts and obvious deductions that cannot but have an effect in reducing the number and extent of the mine-disasters which, in the last few years, have been so terrible in frequency and magnitude. The only possible sources of explosions of any magnitude in coal-mines are : (1) explosives stored in quantity in the mine; (2) gases generated or liberated in the mine; and (3) coal-dust. Combinations of any of the three may, of course, take part in the result. The danger of any great loss of life from stored explosives alone is very remote. The simplest ordinary precaution forbids the presence, in one place underground, of any considerable quantity of explosives, and it would require an

"Mining activities, especially underground mining operations, create great demands on utilized haulage means which cover a variety of different horizontal and vertical distances. In the course of the continuous optimization of the haulage process, the application of textile machine elements, in particular synthetic fiber ropes, offers new opportunities. Therefore the current level of knowledge needs to be improved based on extensive analyses. For the estimation of the scope of these analyses, different fields of application and occurring environmental influences which have an impact on synthetic fiber ropes during their use in underground mining have to be evaluated. The Chair Underground Mining Methods of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg works on a scientific project concerning the use of synthetic fiber ropes in underground mining operations. This paper focuses on the potential application of synthetic fiber ropes in haulage systems in underground mining and exposes critical influences as an outcome of the working environment. These first investigations are the basis for the development of an appropriate experimental series. SYNTHETIC FIBER ROPES FOR UNDERGROUND MINING OPERATIONS The main idea is to optimize underground haulage means to develop even more economic systems. The new and lightweight design of single machine elements seems to be the first step to accomplish this goal. An example is the lightweight design of shaft hoisting ropes. The commonly used steel wire ropes are very heavy and are endangered to snap due to their own weight when reaching a distinguishing length. Thus they may not or only conditionally be used for deep mining operations utilizing shaft haulage. Ropes made of high-tech synthetic fibers weigh only an eighth of steel wire ropes while displaying the same tensile strength. This relation is shown in Figure 1, based on the comparison of fiber strength and density. This could offer new opportunities for deep mining operations, which are anticipated by many mining companies. /1/"

Among the many interesting problems of the pre-Cambrian of the Canadian Shield is that of the origin of certain types of gneisses which are intimately associated with the granites on the one hand and with the metamorphic rocks of known sedimentary origin on the other. The observations recorded in this paper on the structure and composition of these ancient rocks found in a small part of northern Quebec may help to lead to a clearer understanding of the way in which they were formed and also constitute a contribution to the regional geology and petrography of a district for which little detailed information is available. The area considered is located near the Ashuapmuchuan, or Chamuchuan, river about 180 miles north-northwest of the city of Quebec, and therefore well within the Canadian Shield. Although most attention was devoted to the rocks along this river from the 57th to the 70th mile above its entrance into Lake St. John, a few observations on other localities to the north and northwest of that lake will be included. The field work was done in the summer of 1924 in cooperation with L. W. MacNaughton, E. S. Roberts, and B. M. Shaub, all of Cornell University. The party ascended the Ashuapmuchuan river by canoe and spent about a month near the mouth of Stacker, or Brochet, river, the outlet of the lake of the same name, returning by way of Mikoasas river. The writer wishes to express his obligation to his associates for their co-operation in the field and for their permission to publish the results. He is especially indebted to B. M. A resume of the history and state of the art of physical beneficiation of uranium ores is presented along with a detailed description of research on concentration of uranium ores by attrition grinding. The information on flotation, gravity concentration, electronic sorting, and selective grinding was gathered to complement the study of attrition grinding methods. Both dry and wet grinding procedures were investigated as potential methods of upgrading a variety of ore types, ranging in grade from 0.02 to 0.42 percent U308. A Mardun4 disintegrator that employs high-speed rotating paddles in a cylindrical shell lined with interrupter bars was used in most of the dry grinding studies. Attrition scrubbing devices, which impart a violent mixing or attritioning action to ore pulps, and cylindrical mills, employing rods or punchings as grinding media, were used in the wet grinding tests.

"Vale has been actively evaluating new technologies to curtail diesel emissions. This paper discusses the selection, installation, operation, and evaluation of the MANN+HUMMEL SMF®-AR diesel particulate filter system to reduce diesel particulate matter emissions in underground mines. The system uses a sintered metal filter element, an iron fuel-borne catalyst with an onboard dosing system, an electric heater that uses onboard power, and a sensor-based control unit. More than 6,000 h of testing demonstrated that the system represents a breakthrough in the successful control of soot emission from light-duty vehicles with differing soot emission levels, exhaust temperatures, and duty cycles.RÉSUMÉ La compagnie Vale évalue activement de nouvelles technologies pour réduire les émissions de diesel. Le présent article discute du choix, de l’installation, du fonctionnement et de l’évaluation du système MANN+HUMMEL SMFMD-AR de filtrage des particules de diesel pour réduire les émissions de particules de diesel dans les mines souterraines. During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1.) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams. (2.) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard' were consistent throughout their calibration. (3.) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple. It seems that a calibration between 0 and -193° C. can be made within the stated accuracy by determining experimentally the e.m.f. of the particular couple at -78.50°, the normal sublimation point of carbon dioxide, and at -182.97°, the normal boiling point of oxygen. Measuring diesel particulate matter (DPM) for underground metal/nonmetal mine compliance samples is done by collecting DPM onto quartz fiber filters and analyzing the samples via NIOSH method 5040 for elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC). As part of the sampling train, two quartz fiber filters in tandem are housed inside an SKC DPM cassette that includes an impactor. The impactor segregates DPM and mine dust, and the second filter is used to correct for adsorption of vapor phase organic carbon (OC). Since the value of the second filter is subtracted from the first, the pre-existing carbon on the filter media for both filters needs to be comparable. In addition, the pre-existing carbon on the media should be low for accurate and sensitive results. However, there have been some reports of elevated OC on the filter media of the SKC DPM cassettes, which would cause the limit of detection (LOD) to be higher than reported at times. In this study, blank SKC DPM cassettes from different batches and with different expiration dates were analyzed to quantify the amount of carbon on the filter media and to determine the LOD and limit of quantification (LOQ) associated with these samplers. It was found that the organic carbon and total carbon on the media was about five times higher than quartz media used in samplers from other studies. The average TC on the blanks was 2.57 μg/cm2 with a standard deviation of 0.70, resulting in a LOD of 21 μg/m3 TC, 8-hr Time Weighted Average (TWA), and LOQ of 69 μg/m3 TC, 8-hr TWA, when using these samplers for collecting DPM. The LOD and LOQ may be improved through some sample preparation techniques. INTRODUCTION Exposure to diesel exhaust (DE) is associated with an increased risk for lung cancer and other adverse health effects (Attfield et al. 2012, Silverman et al. 2012, Ping and Guang 2017, IARC 2012). Pronk et al. 2009 reported that the highest exposed groups to elemental carbon (EC) from DE worked in underground sites in mining and construction and they were exposed to concentrations between 27–658 μg/m3. At concentrations (1–25 μg/m3 EC) well below those observed in mining, diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposures were estimated to increase the risk of cancer by levels exceeding those typically acceptable for occupational risk in the United States and Europe (Vermeulen et al. 2014). This suggests that underground miners are especially at risk because of their more substantial exposures in confined working spaces. As a protective measure, in 2001, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule to limit exposures of metal/nonmetal underground miners to DPM to an 8-hr time-weighted average (TWA) of 160 μg/m3 total carbon (TC) (MSHA 2001, 2006).

Technological advances in circuit breaker designs over the last 20 years have given rise to retrofit options in lieu of complete replacement for older outdated circuit breaker technology. This paper examines the four MV breaking techniques that exist in industry and investigates various retrofit versus refurbish options for switchgear modernization and life extension. IntroductionThe life extension and upgrade of medium voltage circuit breakers is becoming an increasingly important issue in today’s modern industrial facilities from both a reliability and safety standpoint. Unscheduled downtime, loss of production, and plant safety issues are just some of the concerns that need to be addressed with aging switchgear. A thorough examination of the available breaking mediums allows an informed decision to be made when the time comes to assess equipment performance. If you look back over the history of medium voltage breakers, you will find that there have been four breaking techniques developed and widely used:• air magnetic;• minimum oil;• vacuum; and• SF6.Many facilities that were constructed 25 to 30 years ago relied on air magnetic or minimum oil circuit breakers in their distribution systems. At the time, these were the only “tried and tested” options and they afforded good service. Since then, however, newer technology has given us the vacuum and SF6 mediums which have both proven their reliability and monopolized the market. All the methods have their particular place in industry and what follows is a summary of the advantages, disadvantages, and chronological development of each breaking technique."

Thallium is one of the rare and relatively neglected elements that has recently assumed conspicuous importance. This element is widely distributed in nature but occurs in such minute quantities in most rocks and minerals that its recovery at present is only commercially feasible as a byproduct of other industries. World War II, with its unprecedented demand for products having special or unusual properties, led to a study of a number of the rarer elements that previously had been given comparatively little attention for one or more of the following reasons: 1. 2. Limited knowledge of properties. Small quantitios present in available raw materials. 3. High cost of concentration and recovery. Some of those rare elements, either alone or in the form of compounds, have already proved of such value for certain military and industrial purposes that their extraction from ores and waste products, oven at high cost, is fully justified. On the othor hand, further investigation of their character- istics, discovery of more adequato sources, and improvement in methods of con- centration and recovery would greatly broaden their field of usefulness and establish new and expanded industries. The current market for some of these elements exceeds the available supply. One of the functions of the Bureau of Mines is to study the properties of such elements in greater detail, locate the most promising raw materials from which they can be derived, and work out methods of extraction that will render the recovery of such elements more economical. The purpose of a serios of information circulars on the raror elements is to present in condensed form the facts and data so far available. This information may serve as a basis in planning more complete investigations loading to a full utilization of such elements.

New Mexico is the leading domestic producer of perlite, a hydrated volcanic glass that can be expanded thermally to form a white, very porous, lightweight material. The United States is the leading consumer and producer of perlite in the world (Pettifer 1981). New Mexico produced, at five mines (Fig. 1), about 86% of all domestic crude ore mined in 1984 (Meisinger, 1985). Perlite is mined in 6 other western states, ore is expanded in 33 states, and the expanded ore is consumed in all states (Meisinger, 1985). Gross value of domestic ore mined in 1984 was about $16,500,000 (FOB mine; Meisinger, 1985) with much value added by expansion and processing prior to sale to end users. In contrast to the ubiquitous nature of perlite products in the U.S. economy, facilities for testing perlite ore, expanded perlite, and perlite products are notably lacking on a commercial, cost-effective, or readily accessible basis. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Min¬eral Resources (NMBM&MR) established a perlite¬testing facility in 1984 to mitigate this lack and to further the mining of perlite in the state.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO) Nova Operation (Nova) is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA). Discovered by Sirius Resources NL (Sirius) in 2012 and acquired by IGO in 2015, the Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger) occurs within the Fraser Zone of the AlbanyFraser Orogen. Nova-Bollinger is a complex nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) magmatic intrusive sulfide deposit, which is characterised by high-grade folded and undulating breccia lodes that host the bulk of the payable metals. Significant sulfide mineralisation is also found in several magmatic intrusive styles including net-textured, disseminated and blebby styles. A smaller but material volume of sulfides has also been remobilised into the deposit’s footwall rocks as ‘stringer’ bands in metasediments, or as discrete massive sulfide lenses. When interpolating Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) block grades in the presence of locally varying grade connectivity trends, such as folds or undulations, the sample search neighbourhood, which is used to identify the composites subset that is used for each block estimate, should be oriented to match the local trends. In theory, the most robust method of estimation where locally varying angles (LVAs) are applied to search neighbourhoods, are techniques where the composites and the blocks to be estimated are transformed to an unfolded coordinate system (UCS). However, UCS methods can be tedious to implement and require subjective decisions to be made that cannot always be fully defended. An alternative LVA method commonly used in the industry is dynamic anisotropy (DA), which is much simpler to implement and is often assumed (but not that often demonstrated) to result in similar results to UCS-style estimation. In 2018, Nova’s Mine Geology team (MGT) estimated the grades and density of the Nova-Bollinger MRE using the UCS approach. For the 2020 MRE update, Nova’s MGT tested and compared the USC grade interpolation method with the DA approach. As applied to the Nova-Bollinger’s 2020 MRE, the comparison, advantages and disadvantages of the two estimation methods are the subject of this paper

The last three decades have seen significant mining development in northern regions of Canada, where the freeze and thaw cycle of permafrost and the corresponding surface subsidence and heave represent a significant challenge to the design and maintenance of infrastructures. Identifying areas at risk is of great assistance to reduce the impact of this issue. Over the past ten years, Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) has been widely used to monitor ground surface deformation. With this technique, changes in phase between two SAR acquisitions are used to detect centimeter to millimeter surface displacements over a large area and with high spatial resolution. InSAR can be used as a tool to assist the siting and design of new infrastructure as well as highlighting the risk to existing structures in areas of unstable terrain. This paper presents the results of a project carried out by Effigis, which made use of SAR interferometry in the context of monitoring terrain and infrastructure stability in a northern mining environment that is affected by permafrost seasonal and long term changes. TerraSAR-X images acquired during two periods, August to November 2012 and March to October 2013, were used to measure the deformations and/or movement of ground surface, infrastructure and stockpiles caused by seasonal changes in permafrost extent in and around a mining site located in Nunavik, Quebec. The results showed that spatial and temporal distributions of surface displacements are in accordance with scientific and terrain knowledge. Some displacements were observed in loose soil areas while, as expected, none were detected in bedrock and rock outcrop areas. The areas most affected by active layer changes showed surface subsidence in the thaw settlement period. This study confirms that SAR interferometry has a great potential for operational applications related to risks induced by surface deformation in mining environments. It shows that this technique can be used to produce reliable maps of surface movement and monitor the vertical displacement of important infrastructure.

Heat contents of extremely pure iron were measured over the range 300"to 1433"K, using a diphenyl ether calorimeter. Results from three samples containing widely differing impurities agreed with one another and with Previously reported results at higher temperatures (1184 ° to 1809°K) by Olette and Ferrier. From these data a table of heat contents of iron has been Prepared which is believed to be more accurate than those previously available. CP values have been derived which are consistent with these heat contents, with the best experimental Cp data, and with the thermodynamic conditions of equilibrium between bcc and fcc iron. The opinion is expressed that low-temperature extrapolations of presently known Cp values for y-Fe are not reliable. It would seem that the thermodynamic properties of iron, which is by far our most important metal, should have been well established long ago. This is not the case, however. As discussed by Olette and Ferrier,' there is objection to every earlier heat content measurement. While the best true Cp determinations agree well at temperatures below the Curie point, there is wide divergence at higher temperatures. Several investigators have examined available data and attempted to calculate thermodynamic functions for iron that are consistent with the two equilibrium temperatures of bcc and fcc iron. The two primary efforts were those of Austin' in 1930 and Darken and smith3 in 1948. The recommended values differ considerably; integration of Austin's Cp values leads to a heat content at 1100°K which is 300 cal per g-atom higher than the value recommended by Darken and Smith. The compilation of Fisher4 in 1949 was based on the selection of Austin. In 1956, Weiss and Tauer obtained yet another set of values by resolving Cp values into components due to dilation, lattice vibration, electronic excitation, and magnetism. The magnitude of contribution by each component and its dependence on temperature was estimated by semiempirical means. Their values are not self-consistent in that they do not form smooth curves when plotted vs temperature; moreover, their calculations cannot easily be repeated since they do not give the values of some of the parameters used. Clearly, experimental values for iron were in a most unsatisfactory state. The presently described measurements of the heat content of iron were therefore undertaken, covering temperatures as high as 1433°K. While the work was in progress, the high-temperature (1193" to 1789"K) heat content measurements of Olette and Ferrier' were published; in the region of temperature overlap the present results agree with Olette and Ferrier well within experimental accuracy. It is believed that the present results, combined with those of Olette and Ferrier, provide for the first time a reliable set of heat contents of iron from room temperature to the melting point. From these data, guided by available Cp measurements, it proved possible to derive Cp, entropy, and free energy function values for @-iron from room temperature to the melting point, and for y- iron in the temperature region of its stability. Exhaustive study led to the conclusion that extrapolations of y-iron functions to room temperature were not reliable enough to be useful; hence these have been omitted from the tables. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Three samples of extremely high purity iron from different sources, containing widely different impurities, were measured. The first of these, designated "Chipman", was kindly supplied by Dr. K. K. Kelley of the U. S. Bureau of Mines from a lot which was made many years ago by Dr. John Chipman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The last few years have shown a significant increase in the demands for fine products, which means everything under 10µm. There are more and more applications requesting extremely fine ground powders leading to the development of several milling machines which are better adapted to the new products. Cost saving machinery is important for the worldwide competition. Especially the energy consumption is extremely important for any fine ground product. A worthwhile field for mechanical engineering companies is the dry milling machinery as there are not as many solutions available compared with wet milling applications. In many cases wet mil-ling is the only solution to reach the requested quality, but there are also a lot of applications which can be performed in a dry way on the premise that the right mill and classifier are available. Dry milling permits to save energy and allows to influence the particle size distribution more easily, as a classifier can be used in that case. This will significantly reduce production costs and can enable the production of new products with better properties. The Tower Mill is well-known already in the field of wet grinding. Recent research work and end user reports have shown clearly that this mill has a lot of advantages compared to a ball mill. Up to now this advantage is limited to wet grinding as only few mills have been used for dry grinding. There is no doubt about the efficiency of dry grinding, but new and improved feeding and discharg-ing systems have to be developed in order to enable the full range of its advantages. Especially the high production capacities are a challenge for mill and classifier designers. The Tower Mill with its special grinding mechanism allows to cope with very high feed rates, because machines with more than 1 MW are available. Improved grinding efficiency will decrease the circulation load through the classifier and also lead to smaller classifier sizes. Together with im-proved mills the classifier can work more efficiently because the feed material is finer. Results of a test center plant production will be shown together with a comparison between stan-dard machinery and the MaxxMill®. Preferential applications for each mill will be explained.
