In these opening remarks, I will endeavor to give a background of continuous casting of metals. Only passing attention will be given to the different processes to be described by the authors whose papers are on the program, as they are far more familiar than I am with their subject matter. Suffice to say that over the past several years the brass, copper, aluminum and magnesium industries have shifted practically completely from conventional static molds to continuous casting machines. The Aluminum Company of America alone has more than 60 continuous machines in operation. The product as continuously cast is superior metallurgically, less scrap loss is involved, costs are generally lower, and the equipment requires little floor space. A continuous machine, operating as it does with deadly constancy, is a ravenous consumer of molten metal, and in most plants one or two machines are well able to handle large banks of melting and refining furnaces. In steel, interest in continuous casting is today more serious than ever before in history, and there is every reason to believe that continuous machines may secure a minor place in the ferrous industry, particularly for tool and alloy analyses. In the past, steel has been commercially cast continuously, and today many tons of steel are being turned out in this manner. It has been said that the cradle of every science is surrounded by dead theorists— and certainly there are innumerable examples of this in the metals industries. An excellent illustration, for instance, is the continuous rolling of metal, a tantalizing objective that for decades on end exhausted . the efforts of a long line of famous, infamous and unknown inventors. Finally, in 1922, John B. Tytus, of the American Rolling Mill Co., brought forth what now seems such an obviously simple scheme— a concave roll face, each stand of progressivcly less concavity. And out of this one change in design sprang today's wide continuous mill rolling steel sheet Ioo in. wide at 2000 ft. per minute. Another excellent example is the con- . tinuous casting of liquid metal into an intermediate form, preferably one requiring little subsequent breakdown. First, the casting of liquid metal alone was fascinating enough. Then someone passed the cast metal directly into a rolling mill, and shortly thereafter this continuously rolled strip was passed directly into a stamping machine. This leitmotiv of a continuous flow of metal from the liquid phase to a consumer end product, fast and inexpensive, and all housed within a small space, was enough to drive some 200 or so inventors into frenzy over the past hundred years. All the ideas, however, like mayflies, had only their brief afternoon of existence. They were born and they died on paper, as constant exemplification of that great void that always exists between mental production and commercial production.

The industrial coal processing trend toward greater fines production, due to mining techniques and customer requirements for reduced ash and sulphur content in the fine coal product, is the basis for ongoing efforts to improve the performance of the flotation machine. WCO has successfully adapted the principles of the beds Column to a full size machine prototype. Recent plant evaluation tests confirmed the initial promise of this concept by achieving a considerably lower ash product while maintaining the combustible recovery level of conventional flotation machinery. The paper will include a review of the fundamental principles of the beds Column concept, together with a summary of the WEMCO R&D Program from concept evaluation and laboratory testing, through pilot, to full size machine tests. The performance of the WEMCO/Leeds flotation column will be compared to conventional flotation concepts using a flotation "kinetics" approach, which quantifies the floatable and non-floatable specie recovery performance using the Klimpel model as the basis for analysis. The variety of distinct features unique to this concept include a series of barrier rods which are used to advantage, often together with countercurrent reflux water flow, to achieve a significant improvement in product grade. The hydrodynamics associated with the mechanics of "gangue stripping" from the rising "air bubble-floatable specie" matrix will be briefly reviewed.

Thickening of mine tailings is a relatively new concept for their sustainable management. Removal of water from the tailings to form a paste instead of slurry disposal decreases environmental and geotechnical concerns. As the use of these pastes is relatively new, their behaviour requires investigations such as liquefaction and seismic stability, freeze-thaw behaviour, consolidation and leachate characterization. Slurry density, ore type, particle size distribution, specific gravity and environmental conditions can all influence paste characteristics. In this paper, the effect of the above-mentioned parameters is examined. New developments in water removal, and additives (such as flocculating agents, cements, organics, fertilizers, etc) leading to low moisture content tailings are reviewed, and the potential for thickening to enable sustainable management of mine tailings is discussed with respect to storage volume requirement, use of virgin land, consolidation of the tailings, land use after decommissioning.

IN THE metallurgy of precious metals, it has been standard practice for years to use cyanogen compounds, so it was but natural that early investigators in the field of flotation should consider these compounds as possible flotation reagents. In Australian Patent 9508, of 1913, alkali cyanides were described as suitable reagents for the separation of heavy sulfide minerals, the reagents being employed either in an alka-line or neutral circuit. In U. S. Patent 1236501, of 1917, to John M. Tibbet, the use of cyanide in conjunction with soda ash or lime is described. One of the claims of this patent reads, "An improvement in the cyanide process for the treatment of ores comprising, mixing the ore with cyanide solution and oil and alkali: emulsifying the oil in the presence of the ore, the alkali and the cyanide solution, floating a portion of the values in the pulp by producing gas bubbles in the mixture-and removing the values floated." More recently, Sheridan and Griswold, in U. S. Patents 1421585 and 1427235, describe a somewhat similar process and have, successfully introduced it in. the mill of the Timber Butte Milling Co. U. S. Patent 1429544, of 1922, to Stevens, describes the use of double cyanides of copper, zinc, and lead. The success of cyanide as a reagent in the differential flotation of lead and zinc sulfides in highly complex ores is proof that these patents have a solid foundation.. Although the technique of their application to particular ores has been worked out in many cases, no one, so far as is known, has attempted to describe the nature of the action of the cyanide or to determine the ideal conditions for its, application. It was the purpose of the present investigation to gather information on these points. Naturally this would have been an exceedingly ambitious.

A post-detonation debris collection project was led in conjunction with a large ammonium nitrate (AN) railcar detonation conducted by the Department of Homeland Security-Transportation Security Administration, Department of Defense-Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, Sandia National Laboratories, and the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Grounds. This important work will aid in underpinning algorithms used in a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) tool.

"Squall Lake Gold Mines, Limited, owns a group of claims at Squall lake, northern Manitoba, about 75 miles east of Flin Flon and 3 to 4 miles north of the Nor-Acme mine at Snow lake. Gold mineralization was discovered in this locality several years prior to 1944, but it was only in that year that a comprehensive examination of the occurrences was begun. Development work to the end of 1946 has been encouraging and the deposits show interesting relations to rock structure.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGThe gold occurs in a sill of biotite-hornblende diorite at or near its contact with gneisses derived from arkosic sediments . In detail, the contact between the diorite and the arkose to the southeast of it is irregular, with interfingering of the two rock types. On the northwest side of the sill, between it and Squall lake, the rock is staurolite schist (see accompanying sketch-map).Several mineralized shear zones are known, of which those shown are the most important. Within the zones, the diorite is silicified and somewhat carbonatized. Fairly coarse arsenopyrite is the chief sulphide mineral in these zones but, locally, they contain also pyrite and pyrrhotite. Where quartz and chlorite are present, rather coarse gold is associated with them. In that part of the main zone where gold assays have been most consistent, the diorite is rich in albite."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar a recuperação metalúrgica da flotação de sulfeto de ouro utilizando diferentes tamanhos de partículas, a partir de ensaios de moagem e flotação em bancada, visando analisar o melhor desempenho e seletividade do processo. O minério em estudo apresenta um teor médio de ouro de 5,28 ppm e 0,59% de S. Nos testes verificou-se uma correlação diretamente proporcional entre a recuperação mássica e metalúrgica, ambas mostraram-se inversamente proporcional a seletividade no concentrado. A granulometria com 90% passante na malha de 0,053mm obteve o melhor resultado de recuperação tanto do ouro como de sulfetos, em contra partida, apresentou o menor grau de seletividade.

The surface properties exhibited by bituminous coal and bituminous coal lithotypes were ascertained by using streaming potential techniques. The electro kinetic prop-erties wereascertainederties of bituminous coal were found to be similar to those of anthracite. The principle electrokinetic properties of the coal and lithotypes, zero-points-of-charge (ZPC), and potential determining ions, were established. The effects of indifferent electrolytes, hydronium and hydroxyl ion sources, and polyvalent ions (cationic and anionic) were also evaluated. Location of the ZPC's with respect to pH is discussed in terms of chemical and mineralogical composition of the respective surfaces. To account for the observed electrokinetic phenomena, a generalized surface model and adsorption mechanism are proposed. Surface-dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or improve a surface-dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and floccula-tion tion. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established.' These data will be presented at a later date. Experimental Procedures The coal samples used in this research and their designations are listed in Table 1. The classical description of humic coal lithotypes as developed by Stopes" was used for the delineation of the lithotype samples. The samples were taken from the working face of a producing deep mine of the Pittsburgh seam in the area of Ellsworth, Pa. To avoid oxidation, only freshly exposed areas were sampled. The normal precautions against contamination were also exercised. Two types of samples were taken, specimens rich in a particular lithotype and a representative channel sample. The latter sample was prepared for analyses by grinding it to —35 mesh. It was screened repeatedly during the grinding to provide the largest amount of 35 x 48-mesh (standard Tyler sieves) material possible. The screened fraction was passed over a magnet and then washed several times with distilled water and finally with conductivity water. The resulting sample now termed "whole coal" was stored under conductivity water in a glass bottle. Pure lithotypes were obtained from the lithotype concentrates by hand picking, and were processed in the same manner as the representative sample. Maceral analyses, employing standard petrographic procedures," were performed on the lithotype samples to determine the purity of the samples. The results are presented in Table 2. Reflectance measurements of the vitrinites and fusinites are also reported in this table. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the samples are given in Tables 3 and 4. The electrokinetic properties of the coal samples were determined by streaming potential methods.'-' All of the chemicals used in the investigation were reagent grade (Baker analyzed). The conductivity water was prepared by doubly distilling the water in a pyrex Yoe-type still and passing the distillate through a mixed bed ion exchange column. Results In general, the electrokinetic properties of the investigated bituminous coal were found to be similar to the results of a previous study of anthracite by Camp-bell bell5 and are in accord with the suppositions of Brown." The zeta potentials of the coal and all the lithotypes were found to be negative in conductivity water. Jowett? in a study of slime coatings on coal also found bituminous coal to exhibit a negative surface. Fig. 1 shows that the negative charges, at neutral pH's, for both fusain and the gangue are very small, almost zero, while at the same pH, vitrain has the largest negative charge, almost 30 mv. Durain has a negative charge of 17.5 mv. The determination of the affect of pH on the charge of the coal surfaces revealed that hydronium and hydroxyl ions apparently behave as potential determining ions; however, they do not appear to be potential determining for the gangue. Biodegradation of spodumene by Asnergillus niger has been investigated. This organism oxidizes sucrose to citric and oxalic acids (in approximately 50-sot proportions) which degrade the spodumene mineral. The kinetic effects of leach variables on the dissolution of lithium were determined. The maximum theoretically attainable rate of lithium extraction was calculated for the effect of pulp density, to be V : 3.01 x 10 kg m sand the corresponding constant value, K = 12.47% pulp density. The apparent activation energy of lithium extraction vas found to be ^E = 20.3 kJ and frequency factor A = 5.66 x 10 s for S-spodumene leaching by synthetic -3 citric and oxalic acids (each in 0.05 kmol m-3 concentrations).

Copper losses in slags are of great concern, specially in smelting and slag cleaning processes. It is widely accepted that the suspension of metallic copper and matte droplets is strongly affected by the viscosity of the slag. The Chuquicamata Division of Codelco- Chile produces concentrates high in zinc, an element which reports mainly to the slag phase. The ZnO may affect the viscosity and therefore the copper losses. This work aimed to investigate the effect of lime to control the viscosity of slags, and in turn to control the copper losses. By using the experimental viscosity data and the Stoke's law, the settling rate of matte prills in various slags was estimated. The results indicate the possibility of increasing the recovery of copper and/or decrease the process time.

The oxidation behavior of TiAl3 intermetallics was investigated as a hnction of time at 1273K in pure dry oxygen. The oxidation experiments were carried out using TGA method. The oxidation scales were analyzed using SEM, EDS and X-ray diffraction methods. The structures of oxides formed at the different oxidation times were analyzed. The mechanism of oxidation of TiAl3 intermetallics was discussed.

The Olallie RARE II study area has volcanic cinder deposits with a sow potential for development. No mining claims or prospects are known within the study area, and except for common construction materials such as volcanic cinders and stone, no mineral deposits were identified. An evaluation of the geology indicates that metallic mineral deposits are unlikely to exist. No significant metallic concentrations were reported in samples from the area. The only resources in the study area are about 30 million cu yds (23 million cu m) of cinders in three cones. The cinder deposits in the study area cannot compete economically with enormous deposits of similar material in more accesible areas closer to markets. At the present rate of consumption, resources outside the area are adequate far into the future. The geothermal potential of the study area is being evaluated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Just south of the L'Enfant Station in Seventh Street, the WMATA system splits into two branches, each comprising twin single-track soft ground tunnels. Immediately at the beginning of the section, Interstate Route 95 crosses transversely over the alignment in open cut, removing most of the cover over the tunnels. Seventh Street spans I-95 on a bridge whose abutments and pier also cross transversely over the four tunnels, with their footings as little as 7 feet above the tunnel crown (Figure 1). Soil investigations revealed that the tunnels would have to be driven through mixed face, with a clay invert and a waterlogged sand crown. Thus, there was a good chance that the roof would fall in, leaving 1-95 and the Seventh Street Bridge in a crater. Since there was no roof that could be counted on, these were figuratively (and potentially truly) Washington Metro's Topless Tunnels (Figures 2 and 3). DESIGN ALTERNATIVES Faced with this situation, the designers considered several options, including temporary detours that would permit demolition of the bridge and building tunnels under the 1-95 Freeway by cut-and-cover methods. They also investigated structural underpinning of the bridge and freeway pavement, and strengthening the bridge abutments and center pier by post-tensioning to enable them to span over any subsidence trough.

Strong demand for copper in developing nations such as China and India, plus the additional demand for industrial minerals to supply the Arizona construction market, brought about a record-setting year for the state?s mining industry. The value of Arizona?s copper production set a new high of $5.5 billion and pushed the total value of mineral production to $7.58 billion. This was also a record. As it has for many years, Arizona ranked first in nonfuel mineral production in the U.S. In addition to leading the nation in copper, Arizona ranked in the top five in molybdenum, sand and gravel, gemstones, perlite, silver, zeolites and pumice. Generally strong and rising prices, especially toward year?s end, fostered a bullish atmosphere that encouraged significant levels of acquisition and exploration. This activity has spread beyond the normal commodities to include some, such as manganese and fluorspar, that have not been mined in Arizona for decades.

No início de Março/2015 começaram a ser notados eventos de oxidação em bobinas armazenadas no pátio de expedição, e naquela época o fenômeno foi creditado às chuvas. Entretanto, passado o período chuvoso, ainda foram notados eventos de oxidação, que ocorriam também em produtos destinados à exportação. Isto mostrou que havia outra causa atuando no problema, e que era necessário descobri-la e tomar ações para sanar o problema. O produto final é a coroação do esforço produtivo anterior à sua obtenção, e leva consigo o nome do fabricante para onde for enviado. Por isto ele não pode ter falhas. A ArcelorMittal Tubarão montou um grupo de trabalho, que atuou em várias frentes, incluindo o condicionamento químico do sistema de resfriamento direto da laminação. Este grupo de trabalho obteve êxito na tarefa e as conclusões obtidas estão mostradas aqui.
