During the autumn of 1891, several heavy blasts (each throwing down some 3000 tons of ore) were made on what is known as the Theall side of these mines. Immediately after one of these blasts, the writer found that at least one-third of the ore was largely impregnated with pyrites, and besides this, fully 15 per cent. of the entire blast was composed of irregular lumps of magnetic pyrites. This was a revelation wholly unexpected, as previous examinations by many experts had failed to disclose any such quantity of sulphury ore. Over the center of the Theall tunnel there suddenly appeared a perfect keystone, as it were, of pyrites, 3 feet wide at the arch of the tunnel, 13 feet ride at the top, and 20 feet high. This keystone pinched out in February, 1892; but in that month large blocks of pyrites were more plentiful on or near the western wall, and these deposits extended the entire height of the workings, some 43 feet. The second blast in November, in the face and over, and on each side of the tunnel, was far more surprising. The whole cross-section it exposed was thickly interspersed with layers of magnetic pyrites, ranging in thickness from 10 to 24 inches, and quite irregular in form, while all of the ore carried much more than the usual amount of sulphur in the non-magnetic pyrite. One hundred and fifty-five tons from a portion of this breast (western side), showed the following composition upon sampling and analysis: Per cent. "Soil mixed seepage cutoff walls are increasingly being used in levee and dam modification projects nationwide. An important aspect of their overall quality depends greatly on the language included in the specifications. Depending on the method (e.g. vertical axis auger mixing, cutter soil mixing, or trench mixing techniques) the specifications are a blend of prescriptive and performance based contract language with differences in element construction, element connections, quality control/quality assurance, and work area restrictions. Many of the existing specifications were initially developed by contractors in whole or in part, and can contain restrictive provisions favoring the authoring contractor. In response to these challenges, basic soil mixing fundamentals were revisited and recent lessons learned incorporated, resulting in the development of a new specification for soil mixed seepage cutoff walls that provides adaptability for the various construction methods. The new specification addresses quality control, quality assurance, equipment independence (elimination of restrictive contract language), rig instrumentation.INTRODUCTIONSoil mixing has been used in the construction of seepage barriers for over 30 years. Most soil mixed project primarily use the wet-rotary-shaft, wet-rotary-end or wet-vertical panel methods (reference FHWA Deem Mixing Manual Figure 137). One of the first major soil mixing seepage barriers was constructed in the Jackson Dam in Wyoming. Since then the use of soil mixing for seepage barriers has increased significantly and this specialized domain of construction which was solely procured by RFP methods, is now increasingly being specified in projects issued for bid. The Bid documents require more careful specification writing than RFP methods because the RFP methods allowed detailed proposals by the contractor. Therefore the development of soil mixing specifications began with contractors preparing the specifications. This paper addressed some of these issues, and proposes methods to address these resulting concerns. The resolution of these issues considers several aspects: 1) Assessment of binder injection, 2) Evaluation of mixing index, and 3) Verification testing."

The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges which, continuing to develop over time, hampered excavation completion and impacted the cast-in-place final lining technique and work execution sequence for the entire project. The continued degradation of the excavated hard rock tunnel conditions led to a unique, dynamic, geologic setting that forced the project to innovate new and adaptable measures allowing for a conventional cast-in-place liner to be completed in a safe and timely manner and minimize delay.

NIOSH researchers conducted a study to compare seat designs on underground coal mine haulage vehicles. The objective of the study was to support prior findings that NIOSH-designed seats, which incorporated ergonomic design features (e.g., viscoelastic foam padding and low-back support), are improved designs. Based on measured levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and perceived discomfort, researchers evaluated four different designs - two in-use and two NIOSH-developed, ergonomic designs. Researchers collected data using a short questionnaire, a linear, visual analog scale, and accelerometers with a data recorder. Results showed that vehicle operators favored the NIOSH seats with added adjustability, low-back support, and improved seat padding over the existing seats. In addition, the measurements indicated all NIOSH seats performed better than the existing seat, under the no-load (worse of two) conditions, in reducing peak acceleration, crest factor, and RMS acceleration. The authors summarize the data collected and operator preferences for seat designs and different foam padding arrangements.

This report is issued by the Bureau of Mines as one of a series dealing with methods of increasing safety and efficiency in mining operations. It is intended purely as a preliminary statement of the present development of hydraulic mine filling as conducted in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. A discussion of different methods, their variations and modifications, as well as their probable extension as a result of amplified tests of the various roof-supporting materials, will be presented in a future bulletin. The history of the development of the anthracite-mining industry, from the time when the Indian tribes in the Wyoming and Lacka- wanna Valleys first discovered the existence of "stone coal," on through subsequent events-the purchase of lands containing enor- mous deposits of coal for insignificant sums of money, the develop- ment of the first mine, the formation of the first company, the build- ing of canals and railroads-up to the present time when the industry has become of such tremendous importance to the prosperity of north- eastern Pennsylvania and of the Nation itself, is intersprinkled with romance, tragedy, and pathos. The great economic lessons to be learned from a study of mining operations in the anthracite region suggest to the person interested in the efficient utilization of natural resources the need of applying such methods as will make possible the conservation to posterity of this invaluable deposit of coal that has resulted from the operation of the processes of nature during probably hundreds of millions of years. It is the opinion of many prominent mining men familiar with mining operations in the United States and abroad that under certain conditions the most practical way of preventing loss of unmined coal in pillars and of protecting surface property from damage by sub- sidence is by filling the workings with refuse material. This bulletin aims to present a general discussion of hydraulic mine filling, its origin, development, and practicability in anthracite mining.

Tailings dumps at Mercur, Utah, contain about $7 million worth of gold in 3.5 million tons of mill tailings assaying about 0.07 ounce of gold per ton. Commercial mining and milling at Mercur ceased in 1942. To determine whether improved technology was now available that might permit economic reprocessing of the Mercur dumps, the Bureau of Mines probed for a low-cost method that would be applicable to these tailings. A composite sample prepared for laboratory studies assayed 0.062 ounce gold per ton. About 10 percent of the gold occurred as a water-soluble cyanide. Conventional cyanide leaching dissolved 32 percent of the gold, and hot, strong cyanide solution dissolved 42 percent. Results were not improved by pretreatment with acids, bases, or oxidants. After expensive preroasting, gold recovery by cyanidation was increased to 65 percent. The simple procedures were ineffective, and more effective procedures were too costly for economical processing of Mercur tailings.

SUMMARY La Granja copper deposit, in terms of volume, is among the five largest deposits in the world and represents reserves of three thousand million tones. The field consists of a 40 m. thick layer of copper lying over the secondary ore and further down the primary copper. The flotation process has indicated a recovery rate of 88 to 90 percent and concentrates of 27 to 32 percent of copper. The acid leaching process of low grade ore produces financially acceptable results. To carry out the project, it is necessary to build long distance pipelines and a port. Both the Feasibility Study and the Environmental Impact Study on the project have been approved by the Peruvian government. INTRODUCTION La Granja is located in the district of Querecoto, province of Chota, in the department of Cajamarca, in the Northwest of the country (Figure 1). Geographically it is situated on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,700 m.a.s.1. (Figure 1). The site is an 8 hour car ride from the city of Chiclayo, capital of the department. The first 60 km. are over a paved road and the remaining distance is over a narrow hard dirt road. The copper porphyry of La Granja was discovered between 1969 to 1971 during some geochemical prospecting activities carried out by the State mining institution, Ingeomin (currently Ingemmet). From 1978 to 1982, Ingemmet continued with its geochemical and geophysical studies supported by a German technical assistance program. A total of 19 bore- holes were drilled (5,814 m.) and a 90 m. long tunnel made. This study calculated reserves of 175 million MT. In 1993, Minero Peru drew up a technical-financial study based on the above studies and proposed a 12 year extraction operating program: 20,000 MT daily using the leaching process, followed by 13 years of operation using the flotation process with the same daily volumes. "Loss of coal fines in reject slurries limits the yield of coal cleaning operations. Difficulties in handling fines also limit the extent of physical cleaning in treating coals with finely-disseminated impurities. Selective oil agglomeration allows even extreme fines to be processed and offers some novel approaches for coal cleaning and utilization.The oil agglomeration process for the recovery and beneficiation of fine and ultrafine coal has now been commercialized by the Chemical Engineering Section/Chemistry Division of the National Research Council (NRC). This paper describes these activities to apply oil agglomeration and related fine coal technologies on an industrial scale. Pilot plant and large scale results are described, as well as aspects of agglomerate utilization in both wet and dry form."

This paper is intended as a review and update of the use of Pressure Injected Footings as deep foundation units in North America. We will discuss various aspects of this pile and then discuss a particular project - the Mobile Alabama Convention Centre which is currently under construction. Pressure Injected Footing is a generic name used to describe a foundation unit that has been in use around the world for some 80 years. It has been used on all types of structures. It is an excellent pile in both compression and tension. It is particularly economic where a layer of granular soils can be found at relatively shallow depths. Other types of piles would penetrate these layers. Caissons are often difficult to construct in these soils because of their lack of cohesion and the often present water table. PIFs can density these shallow layers and carry relatively heavy building loads on them.

Previous Bureau of Mines research has shown that tungsten ores containing as little as 40 pct W032-can be processed by a high-temperature molten-salt extraction technique to produce a tungstate-bearing sodium chloride phase with 99 pct W recovery and little impurity contamination. The objective of this work was to demonstrate that the tungstate-bearing sodium chloride phase can be a suitable feed material for preparing am-monium paratungstate (APT) by a modification to the present industrial solvent extraction process. A combined crossflow-count·ercurrent flow solvent extraction technique to extract tungsten is presented. APT produced by this new technique contained 88.6 pct W032-and the following impurities, in percent: Mn02_ 0.0007, Mo02 0.017, P205 <0.010, and Si02 0.012. Implementation of this processing technique would improve tungsten recovery from concentrates and simplify processing operations.

This paper deals briefly with productivity-enhancing advances in shaft sinking technology in South Africa post-World War II in general and the developments and application of long rounds since the 1980s in particular and is amply illustrated.It touches on the conversion to circular section, concrete lined shafts, the introduction of tungsten carbide drill bit inserts and grab lashing; expounds the rationale driving the development of longer rounds; and then describes the evolution of long rounds using hand-held and mechanically mounted rockdrills in South Africa and Canada by both local and foreign contractors. The recent experience gained on the sinking of the South Deep Main Shaft follows. Results obtained from this experiment are tabulated and commented upon. The paper concludes with the postulation of æwhat nextÆ and æwhere toÆ scenarios. Addenda include a list of shaft rounds in excess of three metres in length blasted in the Main Shaft at South Deep and their results, typical round design, manufacturerÆs specifications for the 6 m shaft jumbo and rock drills.

Despite the claims of energy efficiency and the considerable development that has gone into dramatically extending rolls’ life and facilitating rolls’ change-out, in the six years since the last SAG conference, only a few HPGR operations have entered the realm of mineral processing. Risk barriers to the take-up of new equipment or processes are: a massive increase in materials handling issues as well as in the number of pieces of equipment required, low total circuit potential energy savings, and similar or higher capital costs. An alternative route is to make use of the complementary strengths of the HPGR and SAG in hybrid circuits. Minimising materials handling issues, providing an ideal balanced feed to the AG or SAG mill, and improving controllability through shifting grinding load as the RoM feed changes, are all potential major advantages to this approach. Conceptual circuit layouts, based on real measured ore and equipment data, are presented here to illustrate the potential production upside, the reduction in operating costs and the reduction in the physical and energy footprints.

The lease-system is the gradual result of the development of our larger producing mines throughout the State of Colorado. The operation of a mine, or group of mines, by corporations has been attended, in many cases, by disaster, owing to the difficulty of securing a fair day&apos;s work from the men employed in the mine, and the loss entailed by careless mining and sorting of high-grade ores, or by lax or inefficient management on the part of superintendents and foremen. Given, therefore, a mine that has been practically abandoned by its owner, for the reasons given, but still possessing merit, the lessee appears on the ground and secures a lease for a year, or term of years, from the owner, upon the payment of a royalty upon the gross smelter- or mill-returns of the ore which he mines. In this way many of our abandoned mines have been re-opened by the miner, who, with two or more associates, has been enabled, by careful attention, to obtain profitable results.

In preparing diamond-drill core samples for assay at the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., 5-foot intervals of core are processed through three stages, crushing, grinding, and pulverizing, and portions of the core material are discarded after splitting at each stage of preparation. Then two 1-assay-ton fractions are taken from the pulverized material and assayed. This report investigates alternative methods of sample preparation. The consequences of crushing, grinding, and pulverizing all rather than part of the core are appraised through the statistical analysis of assay results from 118 5-foot intervals of core. Evidently, a substantial improvement in precision at small additional expense is obtained by grinding most or all of the core before splitting. Pulverizing all of the core would be desirable only if doing-so would cost less than assaying five random splits from each interval. Graphs and tables detail appropriate procedures to obtain specified precisions. The experimental design and methods can be applied to similar problems in preparing core and other geological samples.

"Huge electrochemical investigations have been performed on Technical faculty in Bor (Serbia) which main goal was the clarification of the copper sulfide minerals behaviour in hydrometallurgic and flotation processes. Modeling of these processes was a part of the effort for better understanding of the reaction mechanisms.The consideration of electrical analog circuit and mathematical model of processes at interfaces copper sulfide/electrolyte (CuS/(CuSO4+H2SO4), Cu2S/H2SO4 and CuFeS2/H2SO4), based on studies of the overvoltage – time transients, will be presented. The transients were obtained using single pulse galvanostatic method and electrochemical cell with standard three electrode assembly. In that goal it was developed an original system for computer measurements that enables the application of several methods for electrochemical investigations (galvanostatic, potentiostatic, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrometry etc). The system was tested and adjusted using commercial electrochemical equipment made by AMEL, Milano.In the first stage of consideration the different equivalent electrical circuits have been tested by computer programme OrCAD 9.2 in order to identify the circuit with responses equivalent in shape to experimentally obtained ones. In that way it was established a configuration of an analog electrical circuit for investigated electrochemical system. That phase enabled only very rough determination of values of circuit components and their relative ratio.In the second stage the method for determination of all elements of electrical analog circuit is described. It is based on mathematical consideration of a given circuit on one hand, and valves of the overvoltages at selected times, obtained from charging and discharging parts of galvanostatic transients, on the other."

A presença de maiores quantidades de ferrita acicular/ferrita poligonal, em vez de ferrita poligonal/perlita, geram um aumento das propriedades mecânicas durante a formação do tubo, bem como uma forma bem definida do comportamento de tensão-deformação, o que é benéfico em aplicações de strain based design.

"Experimental investigations are carried out on failure pattern around 2D models of belled anchor piles in dry sand bed of density 15.60 kN/m3 under uplift. The models are having thickness ratio (Ts/Tb) = 0.28, 0.32, 0.38 and 0.46 and total 12 numbers tests are performed on models possessing 45° bell angle and shaft thickness 26 mm. The foundation bed is prepared with alternate dyed and non-dyed sand layers and continued upto reaching embedment ratio of 3, 4 and 5 for each width ratio. The failure points are presented with respect to meridian section of anchor in X-Y coordinate system and the equations formed are of polynomial of degree 3; and R2 values are near about 1. The developed wedge is implemented as three-dimensional axisymmetrical failure surface around similar 3D models. In the horizontal slice method vertical limit equilibrium is used for calculating weight of wedge and mobilized shear (as per Chattopadhyay and Pise, 1986) on the slip surface of each element. The summation of all elementary forces demonstrates gross uplift capacity. The initial and final failure angles are detected and parametric study is conducted on failure pattern as well as predicted net ultimate uplift capacity. Almost all the analytical data are within ± 10% variations with respect to the experimental results of uplift capacity which shows better correlations. INTRODUCTION Belled or enlarged base anchor piles are attractive and economic alternative to the geotechnical engineers for compressive load bearing capacity as well as tension anchorage. These types of anchors may be useful for foundations erected below ground water table. In light weight structures like radar tower, television tower, power pole and outdoor sign pools imbalance horizontal forces due to wind loads, are more than of those self-weight of those structures. Due to chronic tensile loads most possibly from wind loads and associated imbalanced cable tension, the legs of power transmission tower should be properly designed to be safe against resultant pull-out forces. In belled anchor pile, uplift is influenced by embedment ratio, diameter ratio; so, contributions of these parameters on failure surface influence uplift capacity. Balla (1961) first introduced non-linear failure surface in the pattern of circular arc based on Kotter’s equation (1903) and soil friction was assumed to act on slip surface. The predictive mathematical models established by Matsuo (1967), Rao and Kumar (1987), Chattopadhyay and Pise (1986), Saeedy (1987) and Ghaly and Hanna (1994); it was reported that net ultimate uplift capacity was combination of bulk weight of failure wedge and shear resistance along slip surface acting in opposite direction of wedge movement. From the literatures available till date, it reveals that the contribution of mobilised shear and weight of breakout wedge separately, demanding for more clarification depending on the on parameters like embedment ratio, diameter ratio."

Adjusting nature, type of galvanic pairs and forming three component system possible to enlarge emf circuits to 2.378 V.The role of ?2, as basic agent, for generation of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl ions.It was stated, that removing of metal ions from solutions occur mainly on account of sorption and hydrolytic sedimentation of iron oxihydrates.Determined separate stages of the process: coagulation, sorptions of admixtures on freshly formed ferric oxides and oxidizing destruction of organic components of effluents in presence of ?2 ? ?2?2. Shown efficiency of the method for removing of Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, As ions, as well as fluoride, phosphate and cyanide anions and oil products, surface-active and flotation reagents. Cleaned water can be recycled for some processes non-critical toward residual concentration of admixtures, as total salt contents is lowered on 60-75 % and reaching limits of concentration for toxic components.The concept of high power unit creation was developed, and galvanochemical pulsator is presented. The pulsator is not expensive, and exploitation expences are low, as well as servise is simple with high effectiveness, and capacity. The galvanoflotation process is developing, combining galvanochemistry and flotation of hydrofobic admixtures (oil, surface-active agents).The galvanochemical flotators are presented."

The Wolgan Seam of the Upper Permian IlIawarra Coal Measures of the Western Coalfield of New South Wales consists of high volatile, low sulphur, medium hard coking coal with high fluidity. This seam, 1&#183;8-2&#183;4m thick, in the Wolgan area, dips gently at 1&#176;_20 ENE and lies at 160-440m below the deeply dissected surface of the western margin of the Blue Mountains plateau.A detailed study of the deposit has revealed that the Wolgan Seam consists of four main coal plies separated by three distinct stone bands. Each of these subunits is lenticular and displays individual physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics which exhibit distinct spatial distribution patterns across the area. Most noticeable is the presence of long linear ESE-trending zones of low ash - high volatiles - high fixed carbon - high fluidity which delineate the major distributary pattern within the deltaic environment of coal formation.This seam contains some of the highest fluidity coal in the world.The Wolgan area, close to the western margin of the Sydney Basin, is characterized by:I. a regional, closely spaced, homogenous joint fracture pattern dominated by an orthogonal pair set trending 3400 and 0700, to which the face- and butt-cleat directions respectively of the Wolgan Seam are sub-parallel, and2. a more widely spaced, heterogenous, cross-cutting pattern of regional structural fractures. Zones of bad roof conditions are probably associated with these lineaments which are subvertical and trend in three majordirections, viz., 005&#176;,035&#176; and 115&#176;.

This paper introduces the development and application of a new cable anchor - Cable-Lok for pre-stressed cable bolting in mines. Cable-Lok is a spring-loaded cable anchor suitable for the drill hole diameter of 50 and 65 mm (2" and 2.5") in medium soft rock to hard rocks. The cable anchor is automatically set on installation and the cable can be tensioned immediately to provide active and primary support throughout its length. Post-grouting can be conducted independently. In comparison with the conventional cable bolting, Cable-Lok anchor will greatly speed-up the cable bolting circle and decreases the cost of cable bolting. Cable bolting anchored with Cable-Lok anchor has wide application in mines, e.g. pre-stressed cable bolting in large span drifts and intersections for permanent rock support, or in hanging walls or stopes for temporary support, or cable lace anchoring etc. This paper introduces the principle of pre-stressed cable bolting and the specifications of the Cable-Lok anchor, presented the testing results in laboratory and the application cases in mines.
