"Pre-oxidation and cyanide leaching behavior of gold in the presence of sulfide minerals were reviewed, focused on the effects of oxygen injection in the gold leaching process. Generally, pre-oxidation and gold leaching kinetics from iron sulfide refractory minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, pentlandite and arsenopyrite, can be enhanced with higher dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. However, most of copper sulfide minerals dissolved well both in water and cyanide solutions, and copper from the minerals consumed DO and cyanide to oxidize and leach. Only in the presence of chalcopyrite, gold leaching was effectively occurred with increasing DO. However, chalcocite and covellite severely retarded gold leaching. Stibnite, an antimony mineral, formed a passive film on the gold surface under any DO conditions, and it slowed gold leaching. This impeding effect can be alleviated by leaching at low pH or adding lead salt. Using oxygen and lead together can make synergistic effect in oxidation of sulfide minerals and can enhance gold extraction. Depending on the mineralogical characteristics of the ore, the optimum DO and lead concentrations can be optimized. However, lead can cause environmental problems, and so its dosage should be minimized or eliminated by substituting it with oxygen injection.INTRODUCTIONGold ores containing sulfide minerals are becoming more significant as high grade gold oxide deposits are continuously becoming difficult to find. In light of this situation, to produce more gold, recovery methods from refractory gold ore containing various sulfide minerals should be investigated. Generally, sulfide minerals have impeding effects on gold leaching: formation of a passive film on the gold surface, high consumption of chemicalssuch as cyanide and oxygenduring leaching, reduction of gold cyanide by sulfide ions, etc. (Senanayake, 2008). Therefore, sulfides must be properly treated for better gold recovery. Pre-oxidation of sulfide minerals by injecting pure oxygen can decrease the impeding effects in gold leaching. Prior to cyanidation, sulfide minerals can be oxidized to metal hydroxide and sulfate form, which consume negligible cyanide in the following cyanidation circuit (Bodnaras et al., 1993). Moreover, gold cyanidation can be enhanced by increasing concentration of the dissolved oxygen (DO). In general, the optimum concentration ratio of [CN-]/[O2] is calculated as 6, but it goes higher in the real system (Marsden &House, 2006), which means that the reaction is typically controlled by DO concentration."

A barrier pillar in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania is a portion of the bed that is left unmined along the property line or lines of adjoining mining properties, or between mines, or between parts of mines. Barrier pillars perform important functions in anthracite-mining operations. Their principal function is to act as dams to prevent water that accumulates in a mine from suddenly breaking into an adjacent mine or into adjacent mine workings and causing loss of life, property, or both. More than 83 billion gal of water is impounded in II; underground water pools in anthracite mines.1,2 These pools are confined by a system of barrier pillars which separate adjacent mines. The principal factor that threatens to cut short the life of the anthracite industry, to curtail production, and to affect the economic structure of the people and business dependent on anthracite for their livelihood is the inundation of anthracite mines.l,2,4,13,29 To obtain a clear picture of the anthracite mine-water problem, it is necessary to understand the part played by the barrier pillars that separate adjoining mines. Purpose of Report The purpose of this report is to show the methods of determining the size of barrier pillars in the anthracite region, to present the hazards that exist because of the lack of sound engineering being applied to the size of many existent barrier pillars, and to suggest a method whereby barrier pillars can perform the function for which they are intended. The Barrier-pillar Problem Article 111, section '10, of the Anthracite Mining Laws of Pennsylvania reads thus: It shall be obligatory on the owners of adjoining coal properties to leave, or cause to be left, a pillar of coal in each seam or vein of coal worked by them, along the line of adjoining property, of such width that, taken in connection with the pillar to be left by the adjoining property owner, will be a sufficient barrier for the safety of the employees of either mine in case the other should be abandoned and allowed to fill with water; such width of pillar to be determined by the engineers of the adjoining property owners together with the inspector of the district in which the mine is situated, and the surveys of the face of the workings along such pillar shall be made in duplicate and must practically agree. A copy of such duplicate surveys, certified to, must be filed with the owners of the adjoining properties and with the inspector of the district in which the mine or property is situated. Mining practices with regard to barrier pillars have varied greatly since mining began. In many anthracite mines the barrier pillars have been weakened or punctured. As a consequence, the condition

Iodine, a grayish-black nonmetallic element, with a density of 4.9 g/cm3, is a solid at ordinary temperatures. It is a member of the halogen family, along with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and astatine. Iodine melts at 114°C. and at 184°C it is volatilized to a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. It does not occur as an element in nature, but occurs as iodates, iodides, or other combined forms. It is the 47th most abundant element in the earth's crust. Iodine was discovered by Bernard Courtois in 1811. He observed an unknown substance in the crude soda ash that results from the burning of seaweed. Samples of this unknown substance were identified to be a new element, and in 1813 Gay-Lussac named the substance iode, from the Greek word for violet color. The world production during 1989 and 1990 [(Table 1)] is estimated to be about 16 million kg per year (Lyday, 1991), of which about 30% is consumed in the United States. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY Compounds of iodine are minor constituents in seawater and brines, in certain marine organisms, and in minerals of the Chilean nitrate deposits. Seawater contains approximately 0.05 ppm iodine, and certain marine organisms, such as seaweed, sponges, fish, and some brown algae, are able to further concentrate iodine (Lyday, 1989a). Some seaweed can extract and accumulate iodine up to 0.45% of their weight, on a dry basis. The northern Chilean nitrate deposits, in the Atacama Desert, contain the following iodine minerals: lautarite, Ca(I03), (calcium iodate); dietzeite, CaJIO,), (CrO,) (calcium iodate-chromate); and bruggenite, Ca(I03), . H20 (Erickson, 1981). Various subsurface brines also contain iodine compounds. Some gas-field brines in the United States and Japan locally contain 30 to 1 300 ppm iodine. Several coals in Germany also contain iodine compounds. Iodine has been recovered from brines mainly in Japan and the United States, but also in Java, Indonesia, Italy, England, and the former USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. Seaweed was a major source of iodine for the world in the first half of this century, and it remains as a large resource. The reserves and future resources of iodine are large, even excluding the resources in seaweed and seawater, and are shown in [Table 1]. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable. PRINCIPAL PRODUCING COUNTRIES Major iodine-producing nations are Japan, Chile, the USSR, and the United States, with lesser amounts being produced in China and Indonesia ([Fig. 1; Table 1]). Annual world production in 1989 and 1990, respectively, is estimated at 15.6 and 16 million kg. In Japan and Chile, the production of iodine depends on production of other materials, such as natural gas or nitrates, respectively, whereas in US operations (in Oklahoma) iodine is the major product recovered from natural brines. Chile was for a long time the principal world producer of iodine from its nitrate-fertilizer operations, but in recent years Japan has become the world leader with increased production of natural gas and associated iodine-rich brines.

Blasting has been the most frequently used method for rock breakage since black powder was first used to fragment rocks, more than two hundred years ago. This paper is an attempt to reassess standard design techniques used in blasting by providing an alternative approach to blast design. The new approach has been termed asymmetric blasting. Based on providing real time rock recognition through the capacity of measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques, asymmetric blasting is an approach to deal with rock properties as they occur in nature, ie randomly and asymmetrically spatially distributed. It is well accepted that performance of basic mining operations, such as excavation and crushing rely on a broken rock mass which has been pre conditioned by the blast. By pre conditioned we mean well fragmented, sufficiently loose and with adequate muckpile profile. These muckpile characteristics affect loading and hauling (Scott, 1996). The influence of blasting does not end there. Under the Mine to Mill paradigm, blasting has a significant leverage on downstream operations such as crushing and milling . There is a body of evidence that blasting affects mineral liberation (Djordjevic, N, 2001). Thus, the importance of blasting has increased from simply fragmenting and loosing the rock mass, to a broader role that encompasses many aspects of mining, which affects the cost of the end product. A new approach is proposed in this paper which facilitates this trend æto treat non-homogeneous media (rock mass) in a non-homogeneous manner (an asymmetrical pattern) in order to achieve an optimal result (in terms of muck-pile size distribution)Æ. It is postulated there are no logical reasons (besides the current lack of means to infer rock mass properties in the blind zones of the bench and onsite precedents) for drilling a regular blast pattern over a rock mass that is inherently heterogeneous. Real and theoretical examples of such a method are presented.

"The failure that was utilized for developing this model was a double bench-scale failure, approximately 20 m in height, in the Misery pit at BHP Billiton’s EKATI mine site. The bench that failed was excavated in biotite schist. Due to previous problems with bench-scale toppling failures, this bench was excavated with a 70° inclined, 30 m deep preshear. Upon exposure, the wall was very clean with half-barrels commonly observed from the pre-shear operation.In August 2003, a bench failure of about 1000 t occurred in this pre-sheared biotite schist (Fig. 1). Upon examination it was noted that the foliation that paralleled and dipped at 70° into the face when excavated was approximately horizontal at the top of the failure (Fig. 2). While the failure mode itself appears complex, the failure was apparently driven by three factors:• a low-angle, low-frictional strength fault or discontinuity at the base of the failure area;• water either contributed meteorically from precipitation and/or from permafrost melt; and• foliation planes providing a viable toppling geometry once toe block motion began to occur.The above details are illustrated in Figure 3.After considerable thought and analysis, a model was postulated for the failure.It is thought that the entire failure had been triggered by displacement of a toe block (Fig. 4). This toe block is bounded on the back by foliation, the bottom by a low-angle, lowstrength fault, and the front by the bench face. Water pressures behind the bench face developed forces on the block as can be seen in Figure 5. These forces were sufficient to induce block motion. As can be seen in the relative shear strength diagram in Figure 6, only a small amount of water is necessary in the face to initiate block displacement. Note that in this figure, a simplistic piezometric pressure distribution was assumed."

This report is the third in a series presenting equilibrium vapor-liquid data for helium-bearing natural gases. The first two reports contained phase data for the gases processed for helium at the Bureau of Mines Amarillo and Exell, Tex., helium plants. The present report offers similar information for a lower-helium-content (0.75 mole-percent) natural gas to be processed in the Department of the Interior's long-range helium-conservation program. A windowed-cell apparatus was used to obtain 218 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 73 experimental conditions ranging in temperature from -100° F to -275° F and in pressure from 100 to 500 psi. From the phase data, the condensation characteristics, helium solubility, and equilibrium-vaporization-coefficient data for helium, nitrogen, and methane were evaluated. The effect of using a. preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon the subsequent vapor-liquid compositions is reported. A brief comment regarding the composition effect of passing the gas through a gasoline-removal unit is also included.

The metric system is now in official use in the Republic of Mexico, having been adopted by the Government in the year 1862. Athough it is used to compute all customs and other duties to be paid to the General Government, in the measurement of public and private lands arid in all freight and other transactions on the railroads, and is taught exclusively in the public schools, the system has made but slight head way among the people,and has not succeeded in displacing the old-time weights and measures, which are still used in ordinary commerce. The latter were founded on old Spanish models, but, owing to the inexactness of the first standards and to subsequent changes, differ at present very widely from their originals. As to local modifications, weights are the same all over the Republic, but measures of the same name differ greatly in capacity in different States, and even in neighboring towns. The value in the metric system here assigned to each denomination of the old weights and measures is that fixed by the Mexican Government at the time of the adoption of the metric system. The equivalents in American weights and measures were calculated by me from data found in Trautwine's Pocket-Book as to the comparison between the French and American weights and measures, and are believed to be correct. I shall be thankful for early notice of any error that may be detected, that it may be corrected before the final publication of this paper in the Transactions. Linear Measures. Kilometers. A evolução internacional do mercado de alumínio requer capacidade das empresas de atender uma demanda crescente e para isso se faz necessária uma gestão logística eficiente. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o fluxo de veículos em uma fábrica de processamento de alumínio através da simulação dinâmica de processos e tecnologia de modelagem. Com isto, propõe-se avaliar a gestão de recursos (equipamentos e operadores), capacidade de estoques, fluxos internos e movimentações de carga na fábrica; assim, pode-se avaliar a necessidade de novos investimentos nestes quesitos. A análise envolve o cenário atual bem como a demanda futura projetada com o acréscimo de um modal logístico anexo à fábrica, que aumentará o fluxo de produtos na empresa. Em síntese, este artigo relaciona-se com os temas: logística, modelagem matemática de processos e melhorias em produtividade.

Applications of the mathematical theory of plasticity promises to lead to the solution of many drilling and rock mechanics problems. ,Because of mathematical considerations, the inelastic behavior of rock has frequently been represented by a perfectly plastic model in conjunction with a yield criteria of the Coulomb or Mohr type. The totality of all stress states for which a solid ceases to behave elastically can be represented as a limit surface in stress space. ,Probing of such limit surfaces indicates details of strain hardening which are not provided by the standard triaxial testing procedure. Probing tests of the limit surfaces have been performed on Cardova Cream limestone to provide data for extending plasticity theory to cover situations in which consolidation and strain hardening are present. Test results indicate that this highly porous limestone undergoes a permanent volume decrease when it is subjected to hydrostatic pressures in excess of 3,500 psi. A virgin sample tested under a confining pressure of 1,500 psi has a yield strength of 1,700 psi; however, if the sample is subjected to a consolidation pressure of 5,000 psi, before testing at 1,500 psi, the yield strength is raised to 2,300 psi. Thus, both consolidation and strain hardening are important considerations in describing the mechanical behavior of this limestone. Tests conducted with the axis of the core having different orientations indicate that this rock is also anisotropic. Portions of the initial and subsequent limit surfaces are determined for samples loaded either perpendicular or parallel to the bedding planes. INTRODUCTION Previous experimental work in rock mechanics indicates that no mathematically tractable constitutive theory is inclusive enough to describe the mechanical behavior exhibited by all types of rocks under all conditions of stress and temperature. Indeed, the type of deformation encountered in a single type of rock is known to depend upon the stress and temperature conditions in the rock during deformation.l-5 Certain rocks and minerals, notably those minerals composed of ionic salts, have been shown to exhibit plastic deformation when tested under conditions of high confining pressure.2 Since the mathematical theory of plasticity provides simplifications over the theory of elasticity in certain types of problems, such as those in which limit analysis can be applied, it is of interest to know under what conditions plasticity theory may be applied to rock mechanics problems. The following factors determine the nature of the deformation a particular specimen will undergo: (1) the microscopic structure of the rock, i.e., the structure visible under an optical microscope, including number of phases, porosity, distribution of phases, (2) the mineralogical structure of the solid phases, (3) the conditions of stress and the rate of change of stress and (4) the temperature. Extensive experiments on Yule marble, Carthage marble, Solenhofen limestone and other calcerous rocks indicate that these relatively nonporous rocks deform plastically under certain conditions of loading, and creep under other conditions of loading.l-3 This study is concerned with the behavior of Cordova Cream limestone (Austin chalk) which is also composed almost entirely of calcite and thus has the same mineralogical composition but, because of a rather large porosity, it possesses a different microscopic structure. This investigation was undertaken to learn if Cordova Cream limestone deforms plastically despite the embrittling effect of the pore spaces, and to provide data which can be used to determine whether the mathematical theory of plasticity can describe the mechanical behavior of Cordova Cream limestone. A brief discussion is given of some of the underlying principles of plasticity theory concerning stress space and limit surfaces. Strain hardening is defined and a discussion is given of how the mechanical behavior of a material can depend on the previous history of the loading. This is followed by a description of the experimental procedures

Can mining promote sustainable development? What is sustainable development? Is sustainable development good for corporate sustainability? Does it work in practice? If so, is it good for business? This paper does not seek to provide definitive answers to these issues. Rather, it is presented in the interests of sharing information and contributing to the pool of collective experience. The discussion will draw on the experience of Placer Dome in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Sustainable development means development that is maintained at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing ecological disturbance. The term æsustainable developmentÆ is often linked to the concept of ecological equilibrium, development that is self-replenishing. While its essential meaning remains the same, in practice, and for todayÆs complex and industrial world, different people will interpret sustainable development in different ways. Given the dynamics of development and the competing social, political and economic interests, sustainable development must be seen from a much broader perspective. This is the point that this paper will attempt to make. Mining, an activity that uses non-renewable resources, can promote sustainable development. The 1987 Brundtland Report (also known as the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development), defines sustainable development in a broader manner - as development that meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Elkington, 1997). This definition calls for inter-generational equity in the development and use of resources by many organisations, including multinational corporations. Corporate sustainability, on the other hand, is about developing strategies that guide a corporation to stay alive and, more importantly, to stay ahead of its competitors. It is basically about survival in a competitive social and commercial environment. In a corporate world, profitability is survival. In this context, corporate profitability, the main ingredient of corporate sustainability, is important for sustainable development. Without profits, corporations will find it difficult to practice sustainable development or indeed any development. Sustainable development can integrate mining activities with the rest of the community, add value and, in the long-term, profits to the bottom-line. Ultimately, sustainability will force corporations to adopt strategies based on a longer time scale to survive. In the mining sector, corporate sustainability depends on a close relationship with all stakeholders, particularly landowners for whom sustainable development is critically important. Increasingly, there is an acceptance of the view that success is not achieved simply through competition in price, cost and technology but, more importantly, through creating social infrastructure which support community ethics, norms and values essential for trust and partnership. Needless to say, mining companies that engage in appropriate community-based development in support of inter-generational justice recognise the true value of sustainability. This is sometimes called the æhuman sustainability approachÆ which underlines the critical significance of trust in relationships with stakeholders and continuous improvement of corporate capabilities directed towards the future (Dunphy and Griffiths, 1998). In the long-term, such development will enhance corporate public image and acceptability. In practice, both concepts can be built on the principles of economic viability, environmental quality and social justice -what, in todayÆs parlance, is increasingly becoming known as the ætriple-bottom-lineÆ approach to business (Elkington, 1997). Underpinning this approach is a process of continuing dialogue and co-operation between governments, non-government organisations (NGOs) and business.

INTRODUCTION The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is affiliated with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) but operates with a separate staff and funding. It supplements the activities of the Bank by providing, to private business, equity and loans without government guarantees in whatever form and combination most suited to the project. IFC frequently complements the Bank's activities by utilizing, for example, the Bank's public sector infrastructure activities to support IFC's private sector projects. In the case of local financial institutions especially, IFC collaborates with the Bank by providing technical and financial assistance. IFC is the world's largest multilateral organization which finances private sector business in developing countries. IFC's fundamental purpose is to promote the economic development of its developing member countries through the support of the private sector. Of the 124 member countries of IFC, more than 100 are developing countries. Since it began operations in 1956, IFC has been associated with more than 2,000 companies and financial institutions in supporting over 700 business ventures in more than 80 countries. The total capital costs of these projects exceeds $26,000 million. In the 1984 fiscal year, IFC approved 62 projects in 37 countries with a total project cost of $2,473 million. IFC will make investments only if sufficient capital cannot be obtained on reasonable terms from other sources. IFC often serves as the catalyst for a project by encouraging other investors--from inside and outside the host country--to make their own equity investments along with the local sponsor for a particular project. IFC'S SPECIAL ROLE The significance of IFC's role extends beyond just its financing and technical assistance: IFC's capability to raise investor confidence in a project and to help all the participants to arrive at mutually satisfactory investment arrangements is its distinctive character. Direct Investments IFC invests in all types of projects both large and small. Heavy industrial ventures not only supply essential materials and equipment for other domestic enterprises, but also earn foreign exchange through exports. In recent years, increased emphasis has been placed on agriculture and agribusiness products, aquaculture, food and food processing, and other renewable and nonrenewable resources such as metals and energy. [ ] An overall objective of IFC is to assist entrepreneurs and others in the private sector raise the needed capital for business ventures. IFC does not compete with, nor seek to replace private initiative and capital. Rather, IFC helps to raise funds in order to undertake projects that would otherwise be held back by the lack of adequate funding. IFC can do this in several ways: IFC can invest in equity and make loans for its own account. INTRODUCTION Shaft sinking represents a relatively small proportion of the activities involved in mine development. Because of this limited utilization, shaft sinking has been one of the most difficult functions to mechanize. Although shaft machines (muckers) were introduced more than 30 years ago, the first machines were low-capacity units, and machines of this type did not gain wide acceptance by the mining industry until the late 1950s. However, the increasing depth of underground mines and the es¬calating costs of labor have increased the benefits obtain¬able from high-speed shaft sinking. The result has been a growing need for high-capacity shaft machines. Most of the machines available at the present time have been developed by modifying existing equipment to increase the payload capacity and performance. AVAILABLE SHAFT MACHINES In general, shaft machines may be classified accord¬ing to the types of digging mechanisms and the mecha¬nisms of operation. The available digging mechanisms include clamshells, cactus grabs, front-end buckets, and backhoes. The mechanisms of operation can be classified as either pneumatic or hydraulic. Selection Criteria For efficient operation, the primary consideration in selecting a shaft machine is its capacity. The minimum capacity of the machine should match the capacity of the hoisting system at the ultimate depth of the shaft. In many cases, two machines may be needed to obtain a sufficient mucking capacity. The shaft dimensions and configuration often dictate the type of machine that may be utilized; for example, an overshot loader does not work well in a circular shaft that has a diameter of less than 5.5 m (18 ft). Similarly, a single Cryderman mucker is not suitable for a large-diameter shaft, nor is it applicable where very high sinking buckets are to be used. Other factors for consideration include the degree of material fragmentation, the abrasiveness of the rock, and the amount of ground water that is inter¬sected. Machine Descriptions Riddell Mucker: The Riddell mucker, illustrated in Fig. 1, was first introduced in 1948. This is one of the most common shaft machines in the medium-capacity range. The Riddell mucker consists of a hoisting and traveling mechanism that operates a clamshell suspended on cables. The early machines operated with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) clamshell and had an hourly capacity of approximately 27 t (30 st). This type of shaft machine has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Essentially, the Riddell mucker consists of standard components, such as the pneumatic tugger hoists that operate the clamshell. The carriage is suspended on rails that also serve as the blasting set, located immediately below the shaft timbers. To effectively position the clam¬shell in the shaft, the operator controls the carriage travel by means of wheels that are driven by a pneu¬matic motor. The Riddell mucker most commonly is used in rec¬tangular timbered shafts. However, some units have been installed with circular rails, allowing them to work in circular concrete-lined shafts. A popular practice with many Riddell muckers is to increase the capacity through the use of larger clamshells, often ranging up to 0.76 m3 (1.0 cu yd), in conjunction with more powerful tugger hoists. In some large rectangular shafts, two Riddell units have been used side by side to achieve a sufficient capacity. Cryderman Mucker: The Cryderman mucker, illus¬trated in Fig. 2, is another common shaft machine in the low- to medium-capacity range. Developed in the early 1950s, it also has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures are used as blasting agents in mining pyrite-bearing ores. The temperature of these ores can increase by the continuous, though at times slow, oxidation weathering of the pyrites. At elevated temperatures, AN-FO reacts exothermally with pyrite, and the reaction becomes self-sustained at 120° C ± 10° C. The Bureau of Mines has conducted an investigation to determine the reactivity of mixtures of AN-FO with pyrite containing ferrous sulfate. The results of tests in a heated vessel simulating a hot borehole demonstrate that small amounts of ferrous sulfate, a major product of pyrite weathering, initiate a self-sustained exothermic reaction with AN-FO at 80° C. Five pct by weight of urea was found sufficient to prevent a reaction among the three ingredients, at least within the limits of the test, which reached 180° C. Smaller amounts of urea and of potassium oxalate slowed down the reaction and delayed its onset to higher temperatures, but did not prevent it.

The Pao gold prospect in N. Luzon, is an example of a high sulphidation epithermal gold system hosted in Mid-Tertiary alkaline volcanics, in the Philippine Arc. Styles of mineralization include: quartz-enargite veins, vuggy silica alteration bodies, and pervasive low grade (0.5ppm) gold mineralization, associated with kaolinite-pyrite-quartz alteration, and geochemically characterized by high As and Hg. Early magnetite-epidote-chlorite alteration linked to an unexposed granitoid is overprinted by an extensive zone of advanced argillic alteration (kaolinite-pyrite-quartz). No alunite is recorded. Important controls of mineralization include; a broad anticline intersected by axial faults, permeable pyroclastic units, and upward confinement of the alteration system by a highly impermeable, clay-rich volcanic unit. At this stratigraphic position the most important mineralization waz developed. The Pao high sulphidation system is not closely related to a stratovolcanic centre, and has formed subsequent to deformation of the volcanic field. It may, however, be related to an unexposed comagmatic intrusion.

This paper mainly reported separation manganese silver oxidized ores process by amylum de-gradation reduction and its influencing factors. When dosage is given according to nMn : nH2SO4 : n(C6H10O5)n : nH2O=1:k21.8: k116.66:30, the amount of up to 95.93% Mn leach rate and less than 2% silver loss can be obtained. Cyanidation process was used to extracted silver from leaching Mn residues. Silver leach rate could reach 94.15% at consumed amount of 1kg/t NaCN for 1h. Silver leach recovery rate was more than 92.27% by leaching Mn and cyanidation two-step processes so manganese and silver were separated effectively.

(written-discussion-? ).--The advantages of the incline-slicing system have' been ably pointed out by Mr. Scott in his paper in the November, 1917, Bulletin, and also by Mr. P. B. Scotland in the Engineering & Mining Journal, Apr. 7, 1917. From the standpoint of efficiency and economy this method is far superior to the top-slice system as generally practised. However, as regards ventilation, and the danger of mine fires, it is just as necessary to use a mechanical ventilating system in mines worked by this method as it is in those worked by the horizontal top-slice system. Mechanical ventilation not only improves working conditions in top-slice stopes but, if properly designed for the particular mine in question, permits an immediate attack to he made in the event of a mine fire with a greater degree of safety to the men. In the course of time, incline top-slicing will probably take the place of the horizontal top-slicing system just as the incline cut-and-fill has superseded the horizontal cut-and-fill stoping method. While incline top-slicing has been tried in several districts on a very limited scale with inconclusive results, the Coronado is the-only large mine at which it has yet been thoroughly tested, and there it proved to be a complete success. As Mr. Scott's figures show, the tonnage has been more than doubled, with a simultaneous reduction in costs. As has been the history with all other innovations in mining, considerable hesitation will probably be shown in introducing this method in other mines. For example, when the incline cut-and-fill system was put forward as a substitute for the horizontal cut-and-fill stoping method many mining men of good repute were doubtful of its success and post-poned its introduction as long as possible, giving as their reason certain geologic conditions which would make the incline cut-and-fill impracticable. At the present time, most of the mining companies in the South-west, who in the past had used the horizontal cut-and-fill system, have already changed over, or are in the process of changing, and have proved that in the majority of cases horizontal cut-and-fill stopes can be successfully operated under the incline cut-and-fill system. MOST of the recent work to establish the mech-anism of creep in metals at high temperatures has utilized aluminum as the experimental material. It was thought desirable to initiate an investigation of a hexagonal close-packed metal, because of the relatively simple slip system, and compare the observed deformation characteristics with those that have been observed for the face-centerd cubic metals. High-purity magnesium was chosen for this purpose, first, because its strength and other mechanical properties are similar to those of aluminum in the same temperature range, and second, because the existing equipment was ideally suited to observe magnesium during creep. It is proposed in this paper to present a pictorial and qualitative account of the changes that high-purity magnesium undergoes during creep at 500°F. The characteristics of deformation of aluminum described below have been observed by various workers and accounts of these may be obtained from the papers of Chang and Grant.'- These characteristics are: slip, subgrain formation, grain boundary sliding and migration, fold formation, deformation bands, and kink bands. It is well known that in a flat magnesium specimen, slip on the basal plane (0001) in the [1120] direction results in the formation of straight bands on the surface of the specimen. Schmid and co-workers' have shown that this system is operative in the temperature range of -185" to 300°C (-300° to 572°F). They have also shown that a second system, slip on the pyramidal planes {1071} or {1012} in the [1120] direction, is operative at temperatures higher than 225°C (437°F). Between 225° and 300°C (437" to 572°F), therefore, deformation by both these systems is expected. Bakarian and Mathewson5 confirmed the occurrence of pyramidal slip on the {1011} plane and found that it resulted in irregular markings on the surfaces of their specimens. Burke and Hibbard6 obtained evidence of pyramidal slip in single crystals of magnesium deformed at room temperature. Bakarian and Mathewson5 suggested that the irregular appearance of these bands was due to slip on both of the pyramidal planes occurring simultaneously but in the same direction, the close angular relationship between the planes making this process possible. Furthermore, since neither of these planes is close enough to the basal plane, slip on the latter does not exhibit the irregular appearance of slip bands resulting from pyramidal slip. Experimental Procedure High-purity magnesium, supplied by the Dow Chemical Co., was used in these experiments. The analysis was as follows: Al, 0.0002 pct; Mn, 0.0018; Fe, 0.0024; Cu, 0.0002; Sn, 0.001; Ca, 0.01; Ni, 0.0003; Zn, 0.01; Pb, 0.0005; Si, 0.001; and Mg, 99.972. The magnesium was supplied in the form of 1/2 in. diam rods. The specimens had an overall length of 21/4 in., the round ends being threaded to fit the specimen holders. The previously round 3/16 in. diam gage section of the specimen had two parallel flats machined on opposite sides for microscopic observation, yielding a test zone having the dimensions of lx3/16x7/64 in. The specimens were electrolytically polished (without prior mechanical polishing of the machined flats), in a solution composed of 375 ml of ortho-phosphoric acid and 625 ml of ethyl alcohol.' The cathode was a stainless steel sheet bent so that the specimen was completely surrounded. The voltage for successful polishing was 1.5 v at 100 to 300 milli-amp current. Electropolishing for about 45 min sufficed to obtain a good metallographic surface on the specimens after they had been machined. The creep tests were performed under constant load, and two types of equipment were used. In the first, designed by Servi and Grant,V he specimens were beam-loaded, and a furnace could be lowered to surround the specimen. As the microstructural changes could not be observed during the course of the test, the tests had to be interrupted periodically by removing the specimen for microscopic examination. The second unit was a high temperature microscopy furnace designed by Chang and Grant.' The furnace was fitted with an optically flat quartz window having area dimensions 1.25x0.5 in., so that the whole test portion could be viewed through it at magnifications up to x240. The metallurgical microscope had three mutually perpendicular axes of motion, and, in addition, it was possible to measure angular displacements by rotation of the eyepiece. It was thus possible to make precise observations of the specimen during creep, and micrographs could be taken by attaching a camera to the eyepiece of the microscope. In this work a mathematical model was developed to study the effect of electromagnetic force on the magnesium melt containing nonmetallic inclusion in an electrical isolated channel. The electromagnetic force exerted on the inclusion induced by DC current field was calculated. A three dimensional turbulent flow equations were solved numerically to compute the velocity field within the channel. On the basis of computed velocity and magnetic fields, the trajectories of inclusions were calculated using the equations of motion for inclusions. Parametric studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of various parameters such as current density, channel diameter and particle density on the removal efficiency of inclusions from magnesium melts.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), RAG Pennsylvania and Strata Control Technologies of Australia collaborated in an intensive study of ground behavior, reinforcement performance, and stress redistribution at the Emerald Mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The study site was a longwall tailgate subjected to a severe horizontal stress concentration. Field measurements indicated that the stresses applied to the study site nearly doubled during longwall mining, resulting in roof deformations extending to a height of 4.8m (16 ft) above the entry. A computer simulation of the field site was conducted using FLAC-2D, incorporating a broad range of rock behaviors and failure mechanisms. Comparison between the measurements and the simulation showed that the model was able to capture the most significant aspects of the roof and support system behavior, particularly, the extensive slip along bedding that created a partially destressed "softened" zone in the immediate roof. The model also showed that supplementing the normal roof bolt support pattern with cable bolts would allow the entry to survive a further 20-25% increase in the applied horizontal stress. Such information could have very practical application to the design of roof support systems for coal mines.

An investigation has been carried on samples of three Queensland coal dusts to determine the potential explosibility of dust-gas mixtures. The explosion potential of the samples was classified by the lean and rich limits of explosibility and the limiting oxygen concentrations for each sample. Plotting of these points showed 2-dimensional flammability limit surfaces for coal dust/oxygen, methane/oxygen and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots the 3-dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the mixtures were defined. The explosion limits of the coal dust/methane/oxygen system were seen to be influenced most by the explosibility characteristics of coal dust. Methane exerted a stronger influence over the explosion limits when the coal had a low volatile content
