The greatest of all gifts is the power to estimate things at their true worth. LaRockefoucauld INTRODUCTION The primary reason for performing a feasibility study on a proposed mining venture is to investigate all phases of the proposal in as much detail as necessary to justify either dropping the project or continuing expenditures through the next stage. The economic evaluation component of the feasibility study, therefore, must ultimately be based on information which provides an answer to the question, "What is it going to cost?" Unfortunately engineers preparing feasibility studies never have all the engineering or economic information they would like or need. Consequently, the economic portion of the analysis can only be performed if estimates of the various costs associated with the project are made. Project cost estimates, in turn, require estimates of all the physical factors affecting cost components, including anticipated performance of plant and equipment as well as all pertinent geologic, mineralogic, and metallurgical variables. Before useful cost estimating procedures can be applied considerable data must be collected, compiled, and organized. Preparatory work typically includes organization of cost data available for estimating purposes, development of techniques for updating historical costs, and establishing methods of forecasting prices and costs over the duration of the project. Cost estimates for mining and mineral processing projects involve so many features and variables that it is absolutely essential to have some means by which the vast amount of detail can be organized. It is very important to identify, in as much detail as possible, all the cost data available (historical and developed) to the estimator. These costs, after being properly identified in detail, should be com- piled, stored, updated regularly, and made readily available for use in developing new cost estimates Accessing files of current cost information requires a standardized numerical system of classifying cost data. When uniform definitions and procedures are used, every project record contributes to the common store of estimating data.

"Belleterre Quebec Mines, Limited, is a subsidiary of Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited. The property is in Guillet township, Quebec, 45 miles due east of Haileybury, Ontario. It is accessible by 72 miles of gravelled road from New Liskeard, Ontario (Fig. 1).Gold production at the property commenced in 1936 and to March 31st, 1945, had exceeded $9,000,000. For the past 3 years the milling rate has averaged 325 tons a day and the gold recovery about $14 a ton.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe rocks of the district consist of Keewatin-like volcanics conformably overlain by Timiskaming-like sediments. Together they form the remnant of an easterly plunging anticline engulfed by granite (Fig. 2). The pregranite intrusives consist of diorite, gabbro, and ultrabasic rocks, occurring as dykes, sills, and irregular stocks. Dykes of porphyry and lamprophyre presumably related to the batholithic intrusive are common in this area. The veins of quartz are also probably derived from the batholithic intrusives. A few dykes of Keweenawan-type diabase have been observed."

The proposed construction schedule for the St. Anthony Falls I-35W Bride challenged the abilities of the design-build teams to utilize the best and most efficient methods to meet Minnesota Department of Transportation?s deadlines and design requirements to restore traffic to the Interstate 35W crossing of the Mississippi River, along with a sense of normalcy, following the bridge collapse. The project team ultimately designed and constructed two foundation systems at various substructures for bridge support. Steel H-section piles were driven to bedrock for south bridge abutment support and drilled shafts were used for the north bridge abutment and piers for the Mississippi River Bridge. Drilled shafts we also used for the abutments for the three single span bridges carrying I-35W over 2nd Street. The design-build team used high-strain dynamic pile testing with a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) to verify H-Pile capacities and performed drilled shaft inspection on a 24-hour basis during installation over the winter months. The drilled shaft inspection process was a vital part of the project quality control program to maintain the necessary methods for proper drilled shaft installation. Ultimately, with an efficient design, quality construction methods and operation, and a rigorous inspection and quality control plan; the I-35W Bridge was opened to traffic 3 months ahead of the already accelerated schedule.

The measurement of acoustic signals produced by a tumbling mill has been previously used to determine the operating state of the mill and correlate the variations of the sound intensity with the operating conditions of the mill. Separately, the discrete element model (DEM), a software simulation of the mill, was developed to provide insight into the operation of the mill. Presently, there has not been much work reconciling the DEM simulation of the mill with the acoustic signal. Working from basic principles of linear, time-invariant systems, agreement between an acoustic DEM simulation and the measured signal is sought. First, the impulse response function of the mill is measured. The DEM provides the forces applied to the mill shell as a function of time. A convolution of these simulated shell forces and the transfer function gives the simulated acoustic signal. This signal is compared to the measured acoustic signal, both in the time domain and the frequency domain. Finally, a discussion of the results is given.

This paper describes operational environmental threshold levels for exploitation of mineral resources in the deep sea. Such criteria are needed to be able to monitor and control deep sea mining with respect to the stringent environmental requirements that are needed. It is recommended to use existing environmental threshold levels for comparable activities where such are existing. Fields of application are mainly but not exclusively seabed mining operation activities under the governance of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The threshold levels and limits mentioned in this paper are proposed recommendations based on other activities than seabed mining but are a proven and accepted approach in other maritime industry activities. An example of such other activities with proven and accepted environmental threshold levels are Oil & Gas exploitation activities in the sea. Background The first exploitation of mineral resources is coming closer. At the moment regulations for exploitation for mineral resources in the Area are being developed by the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The ISA regulations will contain the framework related to environmental monitoring of exploitation. However, the regulations will not contain operational environmental threshold levels for the Contractor.

Equity investments and loans are made in oil and gas and mining projects by the World Bank Group (WBG) as one piece of a multi-faceted quest to reduce poverty. The Bank mandate to reduce poverty through private sector investments has been contested by civil society organizations, so the Bank has established an independent review, entitled the Extractive Industries Review (EIR) www.eireview.org. The EIR is reviewing, from the perspective of affected stakeholders, the impacts and benefits of WBG development policy. In this paper, we review the indicators used by the WBG, academics and others to measure the effectiveness of investments. We argue that currently used frameworks and indicators do not capture local or regional data sets, and instead focus on available and easily aggregated information at the national level. A case review of the WBG?s International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Multilateral Insurance Guarantee Agency (MIGA) investments and loans in Sub-Saharan Africa provide material data buttressing the argument. Poverty studies in the extractive industries have a long way to go toward measuring and accounting for dollars spent and invested. The paper concludes with a call for project level and regional indicators to track poverty alleviation. Data gathered for this research was funded in part by the Extractive Industries Review.

Desenvolve-se, portanto, diferentes formulações de uma resina veículo para tinta que aproveitam este material como matéria-prima, através da dissolução do mesmo em solventes de origem natural extraídos da casca de laranja, quais sejam o próprio óleo essencial e seu componente majoritário D-limoneno, e em C9 aromático, junto aos copolímeros termoplásticos ESBR, SIS, SBS e SEBS e óleo de soja epoxidado (ESBO) como plastificantes. Obtém-se, em diferentes formulações, um desempenho favorável à futura adição de pigmento e demais aditivos, em termos de compatibilidade, elasticidade e aderência avaliados conforme normatização nacional e internacional. Observa-se especial sucesso com o uso do copolímero SEBS e do ESBO como plastificantes, concomitantemente à eficiência semelhante dos três solventes utilizados, o que permite a substituição do C9 aromático por componentes de origem natural e residual.

"Different types of impact crushers use the physical effect of impact to crush rocks. The rocks can vary from soft to hard and from ductile to brittle but they should never be abrasive. Since the principles of impact crushing of larger rocks are hardly investigated these crushers are still sized rather by empirical than by scientific approaches.In order to investigate the principles of comminution by impact of large rocks a test rotor was developed and rocks of different dimensions were tested. The integrated measuring devices of the rotor enable the recording of impact forces and of absorbed impact energy with high resolution during the contact time.Since impact crushers stress the rock particles with a defined velocity the main crushing properties are gained as a function of the applied velocity and the particle size of the rock: likelihood of breakage, contact time, maximum crushing force, mass specific crushing work, surface related crushing ratio and crushed fragment shape distribution."

IN the production of single crystals by the Bridg-man method of solidification from the melt in vacuum at a crucible lowering rate of 0.25 in. per hr, a cellular structure was frequently observed in copper and copper-base alloys at the terminal surface of the as-cast crystals (i.e., the surface representing the last portion of the crystal to solidify). The geometrical form of this structure varied from crystal to crystal, but, in general, could be classified as either hexagonal or quadrilateral. Fig. 1 shows examples of this cellular structure, which is similar to that reported by Buergerl and, more recently, by Pond and Kessler&apos; and Rutter and Chalmers. In the micrographs of Figs. lb and c, the cubic structure in the alloy crystals is obscured somewhat by excessive surface evaporation in the final stages of solidification. X-ray orientation studies indicate that the traces outlining the various geometrical forms correspond to octahedral planes, which are the planes of greatest reticular density in the face-centered cubic lattice. It would appear from this that the view first propounded by Bravais,4 that the surface energies and normal growth velocities of the different crystal planes are inversely proportional to their reticular densities, applies to this cellular structure, since those surviving are the planes of greatest atomic density. Thus, the observed variation in the geometrical form of this structure in crystals of different orientation is readily understandable from the distribution of the (111) planes in the standard {111}, (1101, and (1001 stereographic projections. Depending upon whether the crystal axis (i.e., the direction of crystallization) coincides with a <111>, <111>, or <100> direction, the cellular structure viewed from a surface perpendicular to the crystal axis will consist of a network of regular hexagons, skewed hexagons (with interfacial angles of 110" and 125"), or cubes, respectively. It follows, moreover, that off-orientations from these principal directions will yield modifications of these three basic geometric configurations. In this connection, it is interesting to note that the bounding planes of the hexagonal structure observed in tin by Rutter and Chalmers3 showed no preferred orientation.

The mechanistic or phenomenological approach to ball milling involving the, concepts of particulate selection and breakage functions with particle population balance models has been well established over the past decade (c.f., the review articles by Austin (1) Herbst and Mika, (2) and Snow (3)). Initial efforts to apply this approach concentrated on batch milling, but since most milling in industrial practice is continuous, much recent research has been directed to extending this approach to continuous milling. The primary difference between batch and continuous milling processes is the relative importance of material mixing and transport in the mill in the latter case. Much analytical (4-8) and some experimental (9-15) work on the effect of mill mixing and transport on milling has been recently reported. Much of the analytical work has naturally centered around extension of the well-developed concepts that have been applied to chemical reactors, (16-18) Fortunately, it has been found(1) that most milling processes are analogous to first-order chemical reactions so that the combined effects of material transport and reaction (breakage) can be handled by the relatively simple segregated flow concepts. The Cook Islands are 15 islands located in the Southwest Pacific (between 8-23°S latitude and 156-167°W longitude). The total land area is about 200 km2. However, because its islands are widely scattered, the EEZ of the Cooks encompass an area about 2 million km2. The Cook Islands government exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over its EEZ according to international law and convention as a member state under UNCLOS1. Accordingly, the Cook Islands government exercises full control over resources in its EEZ, including minerals on the seabed. Decision making on allocating licences for exploration and ultimate mineral recovery is by the Cook Islands government and will be set out in relevant statutes. Seabed minerals investigations within the EEZ of the Cook Islands and adjacent waters were first carried out by, USSR, US, and New Zealand research vessels in the late 1960 early 1970?s and indicated the presence of high concentrations of manganese nodules. "Abstract - Pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are the dominant sulfide minerals in the 740 zone of the Kelly Lake orebody (Inco Ltd.), Copper Cliff Offset, Sudbury. Petrographic and quantitative electron microprobe analyses of minerals, from sulfide assemblages and host quartz diorite, of the 740 deposit have revealed three processes that have affected sulfide mineralization and associated sulfarsenide and platinum-group-mineral (PGM) distribution: magmatic, hydrothermal, and tectonic. Accessory, zoned cobaltite, and gersdorffite occur in sulfides as a result of these three processes, and PGM occur dominantly in hydrothermally remobilized and deformed ores. Where PGM are present in sulfarsenides they provided nuclei for sulfarsenide growth. Solitary PGM are orders of magnitude larger than those PGM found within sulfarsenide minerals. Five varieties of PGM occur, michenerite and sperrylite being the most common, with lesser froodite, hollingworthite, and ruarsite.The effect of a deformation is a localized fabric in the ore, revealed by pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite bands; pentlandite porphyroblasts also partially define the foliation. The deformed ore is also characterized by alteration of the adjacent quartz diorite, which produced an alteration assemblage including almandine garnet, Fe-rich biotite, and chlorite."

Some of effluents released by copper smelting plants are highly acidic (pH = 0~1) and contain arsenic and copper in relatively high concentrations (10~20 g/L). Usually arsenic is removed by precipitation with different reagents, such as lime, iron salts, calcium salts, aluminium salts, etc. Precipitates (often voluminous) that require further handling are formed and copper and other valuable components are lost. A method is presented for copper and arsenic extraction from acidic effluents. Effluents are treated in specially designed closed electrochemical cell without chemicals? addition. Gases formed are collected and treated for decomposing the eventual traces of As-bearing compounds and ensuring the environment protection. Initially copper of grade of 85 % is electro-won. Further about half of the initially available arsenic is separated as low-soluble, low volume mixture of intermetallic compounds, oxides and some elemental arsenic. At the next stage the main part of the left arsenic is immobilized as low soluble stable compound. Arsenic content in the treated acid is in the range 0.20~0.25 g/L. Acidity of treated effluent after first two stages remains practically unchanged and the solution can be re-used. Physicochemical and electrochemical processes, governing copper and arsenic removal, are discussed.

For more cost effective strata control, a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the support system is needed. To assist in this understanding for shield supports, behavior of a four-leg shield design used on a soft floor in an operating longwall system is presented. The shield was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments are calculated. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.

A granular sorbent, prepared by gel-coating polyethyleneimine (PEI) on high surface area silica followed by crosslinking with a low-molecular weight diepoxide, has significantly higher uranium capacity, greater salt tolerance, and faster kinetics than the commercial resin Dowex 21K. Though having lower U(VI)/Fe(III) selectivity than Dowex 21K, the gel-coated PEI affords much higher sorptions of both U(VI) and Fe(III) and also their separation by selective stripping with acid.

Four mining alternatives for exploiting an ultra-deep orebody were assessed through a multidisciplinary evaluation process which involved: the generation of a 3D geological model; the design and scheduling of life-of-mine layouts; the analysis of anticipated ventilation and cooling conditions; the study of rock-related risks of mining in ultra-deep stress environments; the logistic implications of transporting men, rock and materials; and, lastly, the economic implications of each option. Once results from the integrated mine design assessment were available, mine planners were faced with an important problem to solve: how to identify the optimal mine design alternative when numerous assessment measures and multiple decision criteria needed to be considered simultaneously? To address this ‘multiple-attribute decision problem’ and arrive at the ‘optimal layout for ultra-depth’, a generic decision methodology that uses principles of ‘utility’ was applied. The methodology assumes that ‘single-value risk estimators’ do not account for the inherent variability of real conditions. Therefore, risk estimators were represented by statistical distributions of their incremental changes, where applicable. The stochastic variables, once defined, are used as inputs in the ‘utility’-based layout decision scheme. This ‘utility’-based decision methodology offers a framework for mine design decisions to be made objectively, when complex trade-offs between multiple risk domains need to be considered simultaneously. The Buttle Lake camp is in central Vancouver Island, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. The camp hosts world-class polymetallic volcanogenic deposits of Devonian, Frasnian age (370Ma). This paper describes an on-going sulphur and lead isotope study of the major orebodies.Sulphur isotopes were determined for sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite and galena) and sulphate (barite). Sulphide analyses are markedly different from sulfate. The differences are explained below in a unique model.Sulphide isotopic compositions cluster tightly (del34S -6.7 to 4.6), and demonstrate isotope reversals. Calculated temperatures of correctly ordered mineral pairs are unrealistically high. We conclude that the sulphides are in isotopic disequilibrium, presumably because of rapid precipitation from a quenched plume in an anoxic environment, and because of subsequent sulphide replacement.

Introduction Scope of Work This paper represents the results of an investigation of the presence, amounts, and degree of concentration of heavy minerals found in the pulp of the phosphate flotation plant at Peace Valley, Fla., which is operated by the International Minerals and chemical Corporation of Chicago. In this paper, heavy minerals are those, excepting collophane, that sink in acetylene tetrabromide with a specific gravity of 2.95. Percentages of heavy minerals at several points of the flowsheet and the species of minerals have been determined. Some information as to the screen size of the minerals has been acquired. Previous Work All previous published reports or investigations of the deposits of heavy minerals in Florida have been limited to present beach sands. The mining operations conducted by the Humphreys Gold Corp. about seven miles east of Jacksonville along an ancient shore line have been described in trade journals, but descriptions of the minerals have been lacking. Commercial grades of ilmenite, zircon, and rutile are produced on a large scale. Papers have been published on heavy minerals found on the Florida beaches.1-6 Location "International&apos;s" Peace Valley flotation plant is in south-central Polk County, Fla. about eight miles south of Bartow and along the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. The mine surrounds the plant and includes about 1500 acres of the phosphatic lands in this area. Geology General Setting All of the rock underlying the area is almost horizontal. The oldest bed exposed is part of the Hawthorn phosphatic limestone of Miocene age. This outcrops in the stream bed of the Peace River about one mile east of the plant. Elsewhere the Hawthorn is covered except where it has been exposed by mining operations. The Bone Valley formation of Pliocene age, which is the phosphatic stratum extensively mined in this area, unconforma-bly overlies the Hawthorn. Resting unconformably upon the Bone Valley formation are Pleistocene (?) terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand which comprise the overburden of the phosphate ore. Stratigraphy Hawthorn formation: "Bedrock" of the pebble phosphate deposits is a cream to white colored, sandy, dense limestone containing varying amounts of small grains and nodules of collophane.
