The Adelaide Desalination Plant (ADP) draws raw sea water into the facility and returns saline concentrate to the Gulf St Vincent via subsea conduits. This paper describes the detailed design and construction methodologies developed for the cross connection tunnel excavation. The paper concentrates on key design elements which include:· lateral breakout support of the segmental tunnel lining,· ground improvement grouting in the zone of the cross connection tunnels due to extremely variable and weak ground conditions, and· excavation methodologies and proposed support types of the riser to tunnel cross connections.The design process consisted of developing concepts, detailed risk assessment, three-dimensional (3D) finite element modelling and structural analysis for temporary support of tunnel lining; functional design of the ground improvement grouting and the temporary support; and permanent lining design of tunnel to ocean riser connections in a mixed soft ground/hard rock environment.The paper also presents conclusions of the design based on construction data available, and highlights the close collaboration between the design team and construction team.

"One of the thrust areas for the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) program is the development of actinide bearing fuels for transmutation in a fast reactor. Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel has an extensive fast reactor irradiation history and thus is being considered for use as a baseline composition from which minor actinides (MA) can be incorporated for use as a transmutation fuel. This study involves characterization of precursor powders and pellets to be inserted into the Advanced Test Reactor in Idaho. These pellets will have three compositions: one standard MOX composition, (U80Pu20)O1.98, and two compositions of MA-MOX with oxygen to metal ratios (O/M) of (U75Pu20Am3Np2)O1.98 and (U75Pu20Am3Np2)O1.95. The precursor powders, which consisted of, highly enriched uranium oxide, HEUO2, depleted uranium oxide, DUO2, neptunium oxide, NpO2, americium oxide, AmO2, and plutonium oxide, PuO2, were characterized using a field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM) for particle morphology, size, and size distribution prior to pellet production.IntroductionThe Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) was created in order for “fuel-cycle supplier” nations to provide assured supplies of nuclear fuel to “fuel-cycle customer” nations. The customer nations would utilize the fuel for electricity generation and subsequently return it to the supplier nation after it is spent. This spent fuel would then be reprocessed by the supplier nation in order to recycle the actinide constituents, mainly uranium and plutonium, in advanced nuclear power reactors, and thus reducing waste volumes [1, 2]. Nuclear materials would also be strictly controlled through the International Atomic Energy Agency. One of the thrust areas for the GNEP program is the development of these actinide bearing fuels for transmutation in a fast reactor under the U.S. Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) in order to transmute long-lived transuranic actinide isotopes into shorter-lived fission products [3]."

This appendix documents the mathematical approach to deriving the components of change presented in this report. The formulation closely follows that contained in Chapter IV of the documentation for the BEA 1977 Input-Output Tables.' The basic elements for the calculations include the "use" matrix (U), the "make" matrix (M), and any of the ten columns of final demand (generically represented by the symbol y). The use matrix contains information about changes in the technological processes of production, while the make matrix describes the nature of secondary product production in each industry. We adhere to BEA conventions in maintaining careful distinctions between commodity output (c) and industry output (x). The industry-by-industry 1-0 tables supplied by NYU for use in this analysis are square matrices, with the number of commodities and the number of industries both equal to 85. The BLS table for 1982 (commodity by industry) was aggregated and adjusted to be consistent with the earlier tables. The three basic steps for estimating components of change proceed as follows for each column of final demand. 1) Calculate the actual change in output of each commodity for each of the four time periods: 1963-72, 1972-77, 1977-82, and 1963-82.

It has been a noteworthy feature of the Cobalt camp, that many of the valuable ore deposits have been covered, wholly or in part, by small but usually deep lakes, such as Cobalt, Cart, and Peterson lakes, and with the subject of this article, Kerr lake. In the early days of the camp many water-covered areas, which have since been found to be valuable, were ignored or neglected by owners, or simply perfunctorily staked for water rights. Kerr lake is probably the evidence of a fault or sharp fold, having a general east and west strike, and containing a series of ore-bearing fissures, parallel generally to the strike, although having some notable exceptions to the general rule. On the north side of Kerr lake the formation is of diabase, while on the south side it is of Huronian slates and conglomerates. These Huronian measures extend out under the lake, dipping gently to the north to a lateral distance not yet definitely determined, owing to the lack of development under the deepest parts of the lake. Probably the contact between the diabase and Huronian or else between the former and the underlying Keewatin formation occurs somewhere near the center of the lake. Kerr lake originally covered 45 acres. Of this the Kerr Lake Mining CO. owned 12, the Drummond Mine, 7, and the Crown Reserve Mining CO. the remainder of 26 acres. Since the latter's property was originally entirely under water, it was necessary for the owners to make land for buildings and shaft room. Accordingly, in 1908, a trench was blasted out which deepened the outlet, and lowered the lake 8 ft. As many of the rich veins of the Crown Reserve and Kerr Lake companies were under water, mining was pursued under some disadvantages. Fortunately the rock is tight and solid, and mining has been done sufficiently fay from the surface to avoid unnecessary risk. Nevertheless, there was always danger of encountering open seams, through which too large a flow of water for comfortable working might come. Careful soundings were made over the veins, by means of steel-shod pipe, through mud and water to bedrock, but there was sometimes an element of uncertainty as to whether actual bedrock had been reached. For installation of round steel piles or cast-in-place pile construction through boulder contained ground or rocky formation, usual system does not function properly or impossible to work. This paper introduces an installation system which combines unique mechanism where the drill is installed on the top of a driving round steel pile or a stand pipe which is initially driven into the overburden to the depth of self-standing. When the pile driving or bore hole drilling encounters hard strata or boulder contained ground, hard material shall be crushed by the down-the-hole chiselling operated in adjustable short stroke and high frequency of blows while cuttings are discharged in reverse circulation through central reverse pipe while round steel pile is simultaneously stroked by a hydraulic hammer. The paper shall explain the mechanism of the system and introduces construction examples for bridge foundation and piled jetty.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process using ion exchange to recover cobalt from spent copper leach solutions. A preliminary economic evaluation of the process indicated that about one-third of the capital cost was attributed to the total resin inventory, and one-third of the operating cost was required for reagents to remove iron from the ion-exchange eluates. An agitated Pachuca elution system was investigated in place of a fixed-bed elution system. The Pachuca system reduced the resin inventory by 27 pet when compared with the fixed-bed elution system. Processing fresh spent copper leach solution reduced the resin inventory by 20 pct and resin iron loading by 80 pct. Reagent requirements for removing iron from the eluates were decreased because less iron was extracted. The Pachuca system, along with processing fresh spent copper leach solution, reduced the total resin inventory by 47 pct. A revised cost evaluation of the cobalt recovery process was obtained to determine the effects of these process modifIcations. The estimated total capital cost for a plant processing 10,000 gpm of spent copper leach solution containing 26 ppm Co was $23.1 million. With credits for nickel, zinc, and copper byproducts, the estimated net operating cost was $5.10/lb of cobalt.

Design details of a 100 kVA DC electric-arc reduction furnace are described. The furnace is equipped with a 610 mm (24 inch) diameter graphite crucible hearth. A 76 mm (3 inch) diameter top graphite electrode is used as a cathode. The current passes through the bottom of the crucible and is carried to a bottom plate (the anode) by conductive magnesia carbon bricks. The furnace can be operated up to a maximum of 120 V, 1800 A, and presently 100 kW. The start-up operating experiences and metallurgical results of one reduction test with a Montana chromite containing 38% Cr2O3 are discussed.

The continental margins and ocean basins represent by far the largest unexplored frontier for discovery and development of mineral values. In April 1971, Deepsea Ventures, Inc., at a press conference in its Gloucester Point, Va. headquarters, announced what may become the first commercial deepsea venture--15,000 ft below the ocean surface. During the presentation, Deepsea's president, John E. Flipse, announced that studies made by company personnel had proven the feasibility of mining, transporting, and milling L million tpy of manganese nodules taken from the ocean floor, and that, based on current conditions and prevailing construction costs, a venture of this magnitude would cost about $200 million split evenly between mining and processing facilities. A subsidiary of Tenneco, Deepsea has tentatively reserved 1976 as the year in which it plans to mine, process and market the nodules.

Ball clay production in 1991 amounted to about 800 kt (880,000 st), about the same as in 1990. 1992 estimates show a 5% decrease to 750 kt (827,000 st). This decrease continued a trend of reduced production that began after the peak of 900 kt (1 million st) that occurred in 1988. Use of ball clay in sanitary ware was about 2% less in 1992, although levels of use in floors and wall tile, dinner ware and pottery remained constant. Filler, extender and binder applications continued to be important end uses, accounting for about 17% of total market. Refractory uses maintained their market share of about 17 kt (18,700 st). Use of clay liners in toxic and waste dumps is an application widely found in Germany. However, its use has not been fully exploited in the United States. This could represent an opportunity for domestic clay producers. Tennessee remained the leading source of ball clays. Other producers were Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas. Tennessee's production, however, decreased about 3% in tonnage produced and its value dropped from 68% to 65% of total production. The ceramics division of Southern Clay Products, Inc., was bought from LaPorte plc by United Clays of Texas, Inc., a US subsidiary of Watts Blake Bearne & Co. The purchase included ball clay reserves at Troup, TX. The acquisition makes United Clays the second largest ball clay producer in the United Sates. United is also the only company mining clay in Texas. Fire clay production decreased 5%

"An experimental study has been carried out in order to study the deformation of porous brittle materials under plane strain indentation. Gypsum, which is well known model system for understanding the behaviour of soft rocks, is used in this study. The effect of wedge angle is investigated in this research through this series of experiments, using wedges of 3 different apical angles. High-speed, high-resolution images are captured using a CMOS camera during the experiment. The images obtained are analyzed using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) algorithm in order to obtain the evolving velocity, strain-rate and strain fields.INTRODUCTIONThe problem of indentation, which is usually referred to in the context of hardness testing is ubiquitous as a material characterization technique for a large class of solids. Mechanical properties of materials such as yield stress, flow stress, fracture toughness, elastic moduli etc. can be related to the hardness of a given solid. The indentation problem involves a given material or solid (whose properties are to be determined) indented by a relatively harder material (indenter) allowing the solid to undergo plastic deformation, which is then related to the yield stress of the material. The problem of indentation and its variants see many applications ranging from mining and petroleum industry, infrastructure industry, manufacturing, and biomedical sectors. Indentation has been extensively studied in metals, with accurate measurement of deformation parameters, stresses and comparison with analytical solutions. On the other hand, understanding of indentation in other class of solids such as cellular solids, porous solids, rocks, and soft solids is still nascent. In case of rocks, a comprehensive understanding of the indentation problem is very crucial because of the obvious applications in mining, petroleum and infrastructure sectors. The inherent porosity, the brittle nature of the rocks, adds to the complexity of indentation in these porous brittle solids. Various theoretical models with degrees of simplifying assumptions have been proposed to study the indentation in rocks. The most common model used in the study of indentation in rocks is a cavity expansion model, wherein a blunt indenter indenting into a rock is approximated with the expansion of cylindrical or spherical cavity in an elastic-plastic material. Complementary studies in understanding fracture initiation and propagation due to indentation has been largely based on the studies of traditional brittle materials such as glass."

Helium shipments for 1965 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 16th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines helium plants were 698.6 million cubic feet, 2 about 4.7 percent more than in 1964. Production at Bureau of Mines plants totaled 757.4 million cubic feet, and an additional 3,549.6 million cubic feet was produced by private companies participating in the helium conservation program and purchased by the Bureau of Mines and stored underground for future use. The Bureau of Mines continued to sell helium at $35 per thousand cubic feet, the price established in 1961. Production and sales of helium increased from the one private plant operating entirely outside the Government's helium program. A second private plant was virtually complete at yearend, although actual production had not commenced.

The requirement for large diesel equipment to be certified for operation in potential gassy mine conditions in western oil shale mines motivated a design engineering project to develop a dry exhaust conditioner system to replace traditional wet scrubber technology. A dry exhaust conditioner for a 600 hp diesel engine was designed and fabricated for retrofitting into a 600 hp underground haul truck. The engine conditioner package was taken through a simulated certification process at the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Approval and Certification Center to refine test procedures and to uncover any flaws in the dry exhaust conditioner technology. The engine/exhaust system was then installed in an underground haul truck to demonstrate mine-worthiness of the system. No inherent features were discovered that would prevent the system from meeting test requirements. However, the tests did point out several deficiencies in the prototype design.

A regulamentação brasileira de aterros sanitários estabelece que a disposição de resíduos seja feita no menor espaço possível, desde que os danos à saúde pública e ao meio ambiente sejam os menores possíveis. Devido às irregularidades no tratamento e acomodação de resíduos, é necessário manter e garantir a impermeabilização das bases de aterros. Esse estudo propõe, por meio de uma sistemática revisão, verificar como ocorre a vedação com uso de argila bentonítica, quais os fatores influem na sua ação impermeabilizante, a fim de avaliar a eficácia da sua utilização. Para fundamentar, artigos classificados de acordo com palavraschave, foram ponderados como elegíveis e avaliados. Posteriormente, simulou-se um aterro, por meio do uso de baldes que representam valas. Assim, foram aplicados: uma camada de argila, uma camada de solo e chorume. Visando comparar com exatidão o grau de impermeabilização, foram usadas camadas de argila de espessuras variadas, solo comum e esterilizado. Foram coletadas amostras de chorume bruto e de líquidos percolados para a realização de ensaios e com os resultados obtidos, tabelas foram confeccionadas para facilitar a interpretação. Ao término, constatou-se que uma boa impermeabilização ocorreu com o emprego de 2,0 cm de argila ativada com uso de carbonato de sódio.

Coal augering is an ideal method for recovering coal from the highwalls of open cut coalmines. Coal augering is a simple process whereby additional flights are added to the auger cutting head and auger holes are drilled at 1.9 m diameter up to 200 metres deep. Traditional monitoring was located at the mouth of the hole and if methane was encountered above two per cent, inert gas was delivered into the mouth of the hole to deplete the oxygen content at the auger cutting head below 12 per cent. The auger operator was asked the question ‘how do you know that this is the case?’ Trials were undertaken to prove that the oxygen content at the cutting head did drop below 12 per cent (the lowest limit for methane to ignite, also known as the oxygen nose point). Initial trials showed that the oxygen content in the mouth of the hole did not drop below 12 per cent and modifications were made to hold the inert gases in the mouth of the hole so that the auger flights could take this inert gas into the hole. In-hole monitoring, after completion of mining and after extracting the auger flights, showed that the atmosphere quickly returned to fresh air. In-hole monitoring was also tried during the augering process and yielded valuable results. This paper will discuss the results of the monitoring, information on the gas results obtained and the methodologies used to optimise the oxygen content at the auger face.CITATION:Watkinson, M and Leisemann, B, 2017. "Magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) are used with continuous mining machines (CMMs) to protect miners from striking and pinning accidents. Generators are used in a PDS to create magnetic fields covering the space around a CMM. The PDS determines the proximity of a miner relative to the CMM based on the magnetic flux density detected by a miner-wearable component (MWC) and simultaneously alerts the miner and stops the motion of the CMM if the miner is within a proximity that creates a striking hazard. A stable magnetic field is essential to the accuracy of the proximity calculations performed by the PDS. This paper presents the results of a systematic study of the magnetic influence of two types of steel structures found near a CMM—the body of the CMM itself and the wire mesh used for roof and rib control. The results show that the steel of the CMM body can change the magnetic field distribution and also alter electrical parameters of a PDS by changing its generator current. The study also shows that, depending on the distance between the wire mesh and a generator, the magnetic field can also be altered. INTRODUCTION Continuous mining machines (CMMs) can be up to 10 m (33’) in length and more than 3 m (10’) in width. These machines perform the coal cutting operations in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Accidents during CMM operation accounts for an average of 250 injuries every year, and 43 miners have been killed by striking or pinning accidents involving CMMs in the United States from 1984 to 2015.Because of these fatalities and injuries, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a regulation in 2015 that requires the use of proximity detection systems (PDSs) on all CMMs with the exception of full-face machines (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). Currently, there are five different proximity detection systems that MSHA has approved as permissible for use in U.S. underground coal mines (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2013). All of these PDSs rely on a miner-wearable component (MWC) to detect the generated magnetic fields that PDSs produce around a CMM (Schiffbauer, 2002). These systems use the magnetic field strength readings in terms of magnetic flux density from the MWC to determine whether a miner is at a safe distance from the CMM. A stable magnetic field is essential for the accuracy of a PDS."

From our previous work (Gardner, Aissa, and Verghese, 1982) on determining the residence time distribution of ball mi 11s from radiotracer data taken in closed-circuit operation without interruption of the process, it occurred to us that the data taken for this purpose also contained information on the breakage rates of all the sizes present. It is the purpose of the present work to evaluate methods to obtain breakage rates from this data. A numerical solution for the impulse injection and subsequent detection of radiotracer in a closed-circuit linear comminution process is developed and used with typical breakage parameters, residence time distribution, and classifier functions to study and evaluate these methods.

"The result of extensive research into fundamental mixed metal oxide catalyst morphology has produced a next generation all titanium Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA ®). This new DSA ® anode, patent pending, is tailored for electrowinning of non-ferrous metals (copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc) by means of this new coating technology.These DSA ® anodes are characterized by a hanger bar with vertical distributor bars, having primary titanium mesh attached by weldments. The active mesh is provided with noble-metal electrocatalytic coatings, consisting of iridium and/or ruthenium oxides, obtained by thermal decomposition of precursor solutions applied to the titanium substrates. The catalytic activity of state-of-the-art DSA ® anodes is increased by controlling the crystallite size of the noble-metals without decreasing the decomposition temperature. It is known that below a certain value (typically 400°C) the stability of these oxides, and associated lifetime, is seriously compromised. A highly active DSA ® anode, consisting of a quasi-amorphous phase, is obtained at high temperature (above 450°C), therefore not compromising lifetime performance. Through optimization of these design parameters, the manufacture of these novel anodes was identified.DSA ® anode performance advantages include: lead-free ' green' all titanium anodes, true leadfree cathode quality, energy savings of 0.3 to 0.55 V can be realized depending on the EW application when compared to industry standard lead-alloy anodes, eliminate need for cobalt sulphate addition required for lead anodes, sustainability designed into long-life recoatable anode structures, increase plant cathode output through increased current density operations, improve plant on-stream production, no sludge generated or removed, and improve current distribution producing smooth high efficiency cathode.Introduction of ProductThere are many factors to consider when engineering a high performance DSA ® electrowinning anode. Half of the anode's performance is derived from the physical attributes of the electrocatalyst and methods employed when applying this catalyst to the titanium anode structure. The other half of the performance benefits relate to the proper structural design of the anode. In this paper, we will highlight the anode development program in which De Nora has invested to provide the Electrowinning marketplace with a high performance anode product."

DURING the year, the' Institute has made the most remarkable growth in its history. Our actual increase in membership was 1816 and therefore was 80 per cent. larger than any previous year. Even without expectation of any abnormal growth, we should pass in the year 1921 the 10;000 mark. The causes of this increased growth are not far to seek.. They lie in the widening vision of the Institute's work, not only in its relation to' the profession but as an avenue of service to the nation as a whole. The Institute is today in the first rank of influence among public institutions in the country. During this year we have, for the first time in many years, had a ?deficit of some $3000 in our finances. The sum is not important, but it- does indicate the tendency of the times, and that is the high cost of living:' The increase in our expenses lay, to the largest degree, on the publishing side of the Institute's work. If we compare the year 1918, as a fairly repre¬sentative year, with that of 1920, we find that the costs of issuing the' Institute's publications, after deducting the income received from these publications, shows a .net increase of about $33,000. for the year. This has been to some degree due to the enlarged membership but to a large degree due to the cost of the paper and printing.

"Friction fatigue is the loss of soil-pile friction around the shaft area of the pile. It has been observed during impact driving of piles, and has been modelled to a limited degree using physical scale models. This paper proposes the use of high strain dynamic pile testing to assess and quantify friction fatigue in impact driven piles. The method is applied to two case studies: one on a project off the north-west coast of Australia and one on a South Pacific Island. On both sites calcareous sand layers are present. Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) monitoring has been conducted during impact driving of steel piles, which allowed for assessment of shaft resistance development both with depth and with progressive driving, by use of wave equation signal matching. Lessons are drawn from the case studies to improve future observations.INTRODUCTIONFriction fatigue is the loss of soil-pile friction around the shaft area of the pile, under cyclic loading or during pile driving. The phenomenon has been frequently observed in some non-silica sands, such as pumice sands and calcareous sands and has been the subject of academic study.The occurrence of friction fatigue impacts the driving behaviour of piles and the shaft friction component of the ultimate geotechnical strength (Rd,ug). If potential friction fatigue is not recognised in the design phase of a project, required pile toe levels can be significantly underestimated. This could lead to extra cost and delays, or, if no adequate pile verification is conducted, to geotechnical failure or underperformance of piles. This is especially true in remote locations, such as Pacific islands, where calcareous material is often present.A better understanding of the phenomenon would aid both pile design and driveability assessment. This paper proposes the use of high strain dynamic pile testing to assess and quantify the effect of friction fatigue from impact driving. Two case studies are presented in which high strain dynamic testing has been conducted on driven piles in calcareous sands to illustrate the method.BACKGROUNDFriction fatigueThe geotechnical strength of piles is composed of the resistance to static loading by the base of the pile and the shear resistance between the shaft of the pile and the adjacent soil. The latter is often referred to as the shaft resistance or shaft friction.During impact pile driving, a decrease in shaft resistance is often observed. Although this phenomenon is also observed during vibratory pile installation, this paper deals predominantly with impact driving. This decrease in material strength from the tip of the pile influences the shaft resistance and may be either temporary or permanent. Temporary reduction in shaft resistance is common in cohesive soils and is thought to be caused by excess pore water pressure, which has insufficient time to dissipate. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as set up, is observed to a significantly lesser extent in non-cohesive materials such as clean sands (Rausche et al., 2004)."

The Mine to Mill concept, as it has become known, is a philosophy which is being increasingly embraced by mining companies committed to increasing their profitability through better integration and global optimisation of their mining and processing operations. Autogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills are the principal primary grinding devices currently in use, their performance is particularly sensitive to feed size distribution. Most efforts to-date have centred on modifying and controlling the run-of-mine (ROM) size distribution to maximise grinding mill throughput. The complexity of the interaction between ROM size distribution, primary crusher product and AG/SAG mill performance precludes the trial-and-error approach as an effective means of determining the optimum blast-induced fragmentation size distribution. To overcome this limitation, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has developed modelling and simulation techniques that are able to accurately reproduce both the fragmentation processes during blasting and the subsequent performance of the comminution circuit. These models are tailored to suit local ore types, rock structure and comminution circuit design and calibrated using high quality field data. MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) have been particularly active in the Mine to Mill area and have instituted optimisation programs at three of their associated base metal operations viz Alumbrera, Ernest Henry and the Mount Isa Mines. This paper describes these programs with particular reference to the data acquisition and modelling phases, the predictions of potential productivity gains and the extent of the realisation of these gains to-date.
