Extraction of isolated blocks of ground with elevated levels of stress and/or seismicity is a common occurrence in South African gold mines. Isolated blocks of ground that are divorced from the main orebody and are bound by complex, dip and strike parallel, non-persistent geological structures dominate the Klerksdorp gold fields. No quantifiable methods exist to assess the risk associated with mining these and other classes of remnants. A case history, from a gold mine that planned to extract three remnant blocks hosted in a large complex fault system, is used to illustrate the decision making process based on a combination of underground observations, numerical and seismic techniques. Simple risk estimation matrices were developed and used to estimate remnant-mining risk and finally to quantify the decision on which of the three remnant blocks could be extracted at the lowest possible geo-mechanical risk. Il est courant dans les mines aurifères sud-africaines d’extraire des blocs de terrain isolés qui possèdent des niveaux élevés de contraintes et/ou sismicité. Les régions aurifères de Klerksdorp sont dominées par des blocs de terrain isolés qui sont séparés du gisement principal et qui sont retenus par des structures géologiques non continues, à parallèle de pendage et direction, et complexes. Il n’existe pas de méthodes quantifiables pour évaluer le risque associé à l’extraction de ce genre et autres genres de résidus. Une observation de cas, celle d’une mine d’or qui avait l’intention d’extraire trois blocs de résidus qui se trouvaient dans un grand système complexe de faille, est utilisée pour illustrer le processus décisionnel basé sur une combinaison d’observations souterraines, et de techniques numériques et sismiques. Des matrices simples d’estimation de risque furent développées et utilisées pour estimer le risque lié à l’extraction des résidus et finalement pour quantifier la décision sur lequel des trois blocs de résidus pouvait être exploité au moindre risque géo-mécanique. Isolierte Gesteinsblöcke, die von der Haupterzader getrennt und durch komplexe, parallele abfallende und horizontale nicht persistent geologische Strukturen gebunden sind, beherrschen das Klerksdorp Goldfeld. Es gibt keine quantifizierbare Methoden die das Risiko welches mit dem Abbau dieser und anderer Klassen verbunden ist beschreiben. Eine Fallstudie einer Goldmine, welche die Extraktion von drei in einem großem komplexen Verwerfungssystem eingelagerten Einschlußblöcken plante, wird verwendet um den Entscheidungsprozeß zu illustrieren, der auf einer Kombination von Untertag Beobachtungen und numerischen und seismischen Techniken basiert. Einfache Gefahreinschätzungsmatrizen wurden entwickelt und angewendet um das Abbaurestrisiko abzuschätzen und letztendlich die Entscheidung zu quantifizieren, welcher der drei Einschlußblöcke unter dem niedrigst möglichen geo-mechanischen Risiko extrahiert werden konnte .

Central Colliery was developed to exploit large underground reserves in the German Creek lease. It was planned from the outset as a retreating longwall operation and is the first longwall mine in Queensland. Longwall mining is not new to Australia but all previous experience has been confined to the coalfields of New South Wales. There was no precedent for longwall extraction in the markedly different geological setting of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Various investigations were thus carried out during the initial development of Central Colliery, prior to the installation of the longwall, to ascertain the geotechnical characteristics of the coal seam and the adjacent strata and to predict the performance of the heading and pillar design as mining proceeds to depth. Laboratory tests showed the coal to be weak with an unconfined compressive strength of 9.6 MN/m2. Site inspection and geophysical correlation revealed a shear zone and extensive intraformational shear planes in the seam. The latter were found to exert a controlling influence on rib reaction in the headings. This behaviour was predicted by finite element modelling of the development headings which indicated that mining induced stresses in the coal would be relieved by block movement of the ribs. A chain pillar width versus depth curve was established for yielding pillar design based on empirical and computational methods. This gave pillar widths from 25m to 48m over the proposed depth range of 150m to 300m. Finite element modelling of the 25m pillars chosen for the first gateroads confirmed the overall stability of the design but suggested that rib spall could be significant in the adjacent tailgate. The potential for using heterotrophic microorganisms to solubilize manganese from low-grade domestic ores is being assessed at the Reno Research. center, U.S. Bureau of Mines. More than 90 pct of the manganese has been extracted from a variety of oxide ores in shake-flask tests using molasses as a source of .. nutrients for the microorganisms. It has also been demonstrated that high recoveries of manganese can be obtained from a domestic wad ore using column bioleaching. 'l'he isolation and identification of organisms responsible for manganese extraction is discussed, as are the mechanisms responsible for manganese solubilization.

The traditional vertical transportation systems deliver both gangue and useful mineral. The extraction of the desired minerals requires the construction of mineral processing and waste management plants, driving production costs, and often creating a negative environmental impact. The proposed technology is an integration of mineral processing within the transportation system. The mined rock is crushed and then loaded into a vertical lifting system filled with heavy media, with an intermediate density between the mineral and the waste rock. Driven by gravity separation, the desired mineral floats to the earth's surface, while the waste sinks. Delivered minerals and sunk waste is extracted from the heavy media and is then regenerated to a dry state. The useful mineral should be suitable for further use, and the waste used for backfilling. Remained residues of the heavy media may be recycled and reused in the vertical transportation system. Trials of the proposed process in a pilot format have confirmed economic and environmental advantages over traditional methods of transportation and mineral processing technologies. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has, primarily through its contract program, used large-scale centrifuges to determine design criteria for tailing embankments. The centrifuge runs were made at two installations, the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England and Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM. The major problems considered were as follows: slope stability of embankments, modeling erosion and seepage, use of the phreatic surface level to ascertain the validity of centrifuge modeling, and the effects of compaction and weathering on a tailings embankment. This report summarizes the results of the four test series conducted at University of Cambridge and Sandia National Laboratories. A review of prior centrifuge applications to mining problems is included. Consideration is given to future centrifuge application to mining problems in both soil and rock mechanics.

"Bioleaching uses iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria to extract base metals from sulfide minerals. As bioleaching involves breaking the iron-sulfur bonds by ferric attack, the biologically mediated rate of iron oxidation is recognized to play a key role in influencing the overall kinetics. In this study, we investigate the catalytic ability of an indigenous AMD culture for oxidizing Fe(II) in solution. This culture was subsequently adapted on pyrrhotite tailings (0.6% Ni) by gradually increasing the solids loading. Results from this study show that such an adaptation reduces the initial lag phase in the biotic oxidation of Fe(II), thereby allowing for a higher Ni extraction when compared to experiments with an un-adapted culture at a similar solids loading. The use of adapted cultures also helps to reduce the residence time for bioleaching of Ni from pyrrhotite tailings. INTRODUCTIONAs the world demand for pure base metals grows; the mining industry is increasingly faced with the burden of processing lower grade ores and mining waste streams in order to recover the occluded metal VALUES ((Watling, 2006). The extractive metallurgy of nickel from sulfide minerals focuses on using a combination of mineral processing, pyrometallurgical (smelting) and hydrometallurgical techniques to extract Ni from its ore bodies.Pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) is commonly found in association with pentlandite and chalcopyrite in sulfidic Ni ores, such as those found in Sudbury, Ontario, and in Russia, e.g. Norilsk. The vast majority of this pyrrhotite needs to be removed using mineral processing techniques, in order to minimize the Fe and S contents of the concentrates that proceed on to smelting. If all pyrrhotite were left in the concentrate, much more slag and SO2 would be produced, and the smelter throughput would be limited. Beneficiation of Ni sulfide ores leads to the rejection of unwanted constituents as mining wastes, which may still contain extractable amounts of Ni (Edgar Peek et al., 2010)."

The knowledge and understanding of the mechanical behavior of claystone is of critical importance in the aim of nuclear wastes storage. In this study, specimens of Callovo-Oxfordian claystone (COx) have been obtained from the ANDRA underground research laboratory in Meuse/Haute-Marne (France). This claystone is composed of carbonate inclusions (10-50µm) embedded in an argillaceous matrix (representing expanding clay minerals, such as smectites). The matrix itself is also multiphase and composed of clay aggregates of 1µm-size carbonate and quartz inclusions. This multiphase microstructure leads to a high heterogeneity witch was analysed through nanoindentation test grids. Moreover, the mechanical behavior of the claystone matrix is highly sensitive to humidity and temperature. The nanoindentation tests were performed in a climatic (i.e. temperature and humidity controlled) chamber at relative humidity levels from 50% to 98% and at two temperatures: 20°C and 60°C. In a first step, the curves of indentation were analysed using the commonly used Oliver and Pharr’s approach. Other wellknown parameters as the creep factor were also extracted. In a second step, Fisher-Cripps model (Fischer- Cripps, 2004) and Vandamme and Ulm model (Vandamme & Ulm, 2006) were used to identify viscoelastic properties. A statistical analysis is used in order to extract mechanical characteristics of the different phases. Hardness and elastic modulus decrease drastically with saturation (above 80% humidity) and to a lesser extend with temperature.

A brief outline covering the shovels and draglines in use in the open-pit mines of Western Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon, is given, followed by the procedure for the selection of the correct wire rope for each application. Such fa ctors as wire rope constructions, lay directions and types of cores are mentioned. Once the correct wire rope has been selected, there are variousfactors that can affect the service fife ofthe rope and the reduction ofdown-time during rope change-overs. Factors such as hairpin winding, types of Becket loops, and shovel drum and bail adaptors are described.

O presente trabalho analisa as falhas por desgaste em um transportador de correia de uma empresa mineradora que beneficia o minério de ferro. O transportador de correia, por ser um equipamento critico em qualquer linha de produção, é o objeto do estudo de caso utilizado para o desenvolvimento do trabalho. O objetivo desse estudo é reunir informações a respeito dos desgastes que o transportador apresenta em um determinado período de tempo para criar uma tabela com os principais tipos de desgastes e a freqüência com que eles ocorrem. As falhas por desgaste são encontradas através da pesquisa documental pelo software Maximo e da análise feita no local do transportador. Como resultados das análises foi constatado que o desgaste predominante é o abrasivo por dois e três corpos, esse promove a perda gradual de material da superfície dos componentes do transportador de correia.

"In order to investigate the effect of grid-form deep mixing walls as a countermeasure for liquefaction damage to roads and private houses in Urayasu, Japan, three dynamic centrifuge model tests were conducted. Urayasu is located in the Tokyo Bay area, and private houses in the city incurred severe damage due to liquefaction during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. In grid-form deep mixing walls design, the distance between grid-form walls is critical to prevent liquefaction. This study clarifies the relationship between the settlement of private houses and the distance between grid-form walls under the conditions that exist in Urayasu.INTRODUCTIONMany private houses in Urayasu, Japan suffered severe damages due to liquefaction during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake (Photograph 1). Fig. 1 shows the location of Urayasu and the maximum acceleration of the observed seismic waves in the Tokyo Bay area. At Urayasu, the duration of the seismic waves (hereafter called the Urayasu Wave) was about 2 min. The maximum acceleration was 1.57 m/s2 (Fig. 2), which is relatively small. The damages occurred in the land reclamation areas that consist of loose sand with an SPT-N value less than 10.To prevent liquefaction in future, it is necessary to adopt suitable countermeasures in the areas where many private houses suffered severe damages. Grid-form deep mixing walls are one such countermeasure. Fig. 3 and Photograph 2 show grid-form deep mixing walls. Walls are constructed using the deep cement mixing method. Fig. 4 shows a plane view of planned grid-form deep mixing walls for roads and existing private houses in Urayasu."

The Bulong deposit, situated near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia and owned by Resolute Limited, is a lateritic deposit containing on average 1.1% nickel and 0.09% cobalt. A process has been developed and tested at the mini-plant scale for direct solvent extraction and separation of Co and Ni from solutions derived by acid pressure leaching of Bulong ore. In this paper, two solvent extraction processes are described. The first process uses Cyanex 272 to extract cobalt and reject nickel to the raffinate. The second process uses Versatic 10 to extract and purify nickel. The loaded strip nickel solution is suitable for electrowinning. Results of both batch laboratory tests and continuous mini-plant trials are presented. The selectivity of the solvents with respect to the major impurities such as Mn, Mg, Ca, and Zn is also discussed.

DURING September, the Coal Commission pre- pared for issue a series of 18 reports on varied aspects of- the bituminous coal industry; the final report, dated Sept. 22, sums up the facts and offers recommendations addressed to Congress, to the industry, and to the public. The few following paragraphs are selected: Bituminous coal is the real foundation of that great industrial and transportation structure which enables more than a hundred million people to live in America and be so well supplied with things necessary for their health, comfort; and convenience; it also furnishes domestic fuel for two-thirds of the homes of the land. The distribution of the output of the bituminous mines tells the story: 28 per cent. goes to the railroads, 25 per cent. to the boiler houses of factories and mills of all kinds, 15 per cent. to the coke ovens and gas plants, 10 per cent, to the homes, 7 per cent. to steel plants and the same percentage to power plants and street railways, 4 per cent. is exported, 2 per cent is used for power at the coal mines, and the remaining 2 per cent. goes to the seaboard for steamship fuel. Bituminous coal enters into interstate commerce on a scale approached by no other commodity; less than a fourth of the coal mined in the United States fails to enter interstate com-merce. All but one of the 45 coal producing districts in the United States ship coal outside the State in which it is mined. Three hundred miles of cars loaded with coal is the daily output of the bituminous mines of the United States. The public-welfare element in coal is seen in the dependence of public health and safety on an unfailing supply of fuel, in the close connection between the prosperity of most industries and the uninterrupted operation of the coal mines, and in the obvious fact that without coal the great network of railroads which binds together this great country would be idle. The railroads and the public utilities, themselves so clearly obligated to render what-ever public service is demanded of them that the constitutionality of their public regulation is unquestioned, are of all industries most dependent upon coal. Thus, coal makes up over 35 per cent. of the operating cost at the gas plant and over 25 per cent. at the electric power station, and in the operating expenses of. a railroad the cost of coal is the largest single item, next to labor. The practical logic that half a century ago clothed with a public interest the steam locomotive and in later years the electric-power station must recognize a large element of public service in the coal mine that furnishes the necessary energy to both locomotive and power-plant.

The kinetics of the reduction of cupric salts in aqueous solution by molecular hydrogen to metallic copper are described. The rate of reduction appears to be homogeneously determined and shows a marked inverse dependence on the hydrogen-ion concentration. Precipitation of copper is more rapid and complete in sulfate than in per-chlorate solution. A mechanism is proposed which accounts for this behavior. IN recent years a number of important hydro-metallurgical processes have been developed in which metallic salts in aqueous solution are reduced by gaseous hydrogen, usually at elevated temperatures and pressures, and thereby precipitated either in metallic form (e.g. Ni, Co, Cu) or as an oxide or salt of lower valence (e.g. VO, and VA).1 ; In connection with applications such as these, most of which involve heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, recent demonstrations"-" that salts of certain metals, e.g., Cu", Ag' , Hg" , and Hg,+ can activate molecular hydrogen homogeneously and thus catalyze hydrogenation reactions in aqueous solution, are of considerable interest. For example, cupric salts catalyze the otherwise slow homogeneous reduction of dichromate and ceric salts by hydrogen, i.e. Cr,O; + 3HL. + 8H1 ? 2Cr'- -- 7H,O [1] 2Ce ' ! H.. ? 2Ce" | 2H . [2] In perchloric-acid solution, where Cu" is not appreciably complexed, the kinetics have been found" " to be of the form -d [H,] _- k,[HJ [CU"]' dt -LCu+' l+ (k ,/k,) [H] [3] where, K = 1x10"' exp [—26,600/RT] 1, mole-' min-' ... [4] and (k ,/k,) - 0.25 at 110°C. This kinetic behavior suggests that the reaction proceeds by a mechanism involving the following sequence of steps kt Cu" +H1CuH' 4-HA [51 k., CUH + CU" ? + 2Cu f H' [GI 6Cu'+ Cr,07 + 14H'+ 2Cr- (¦ 7H,O + 6Cu" ['i] fast The catalytic activities of the undissociated cupric-sulphate and cupric-acetate complexes are somewhat greater (by factors of 6.5 and 120, respectively) than that of the simple hydrated Cu" ion.'" These considerations suggest that, in contrast to the other hydrometallurgical hydrogenation reactions, referred to previously, reduction of cupric salts in aqueous solutions by molecular hydrogen, should proceed homogeneously, and in the absence of an extraneous catalyst. This has already been demonstrated" for acetate-buffered solutions where the product of the reaction is a precipitate of cuprous oxide (Cu,O). In the present paper, an investigation of the reduction of cupric salts in perchloric-acid and sulphuric-acid solutions, leading to the precipitation of metallic copper, is described. Some results for the sulphate system, which is of considerable hydrometallurgical interest, have been reported previously by Ipatieff",' " and by Schaufel-berger' but these do not give a quantitative account, of the kinetics and mechanism of the reaction. Experimental The reduction experiments were conducted in the 1-gal, titanium-lined autoclave described in connection with earlier related investigations," " and using a similar procedure. The solutions were made up by dissolving known amounts of CP grade Cu(ClO,), and HC10, (or CuSO, and HISO,) in dis-tilled water. While in the autoclave, the solution was stirred and maintained at a constant temperature (±loc) and under a constant partial pressure of hydrogen gas. It was ascertained that the agitation (provided by two 3-in., four-bladed stirrers, rotating at 900 rpm) was adequate so that at no time was the rate of reaction limited by solution of hydrogen. During each experiment, samples of the solution were withdrawn periodically, allowed to cool, and the concentration of copper remaining in solution was then determined electrolytically. Some Cu' is formed during the reaction, but undergoes disproportionation when the solution is cooled to room temperature. For purposes of kinetic calcula-
