O crescente aumento da produção do setor moveleiro tem fortemente contribuído para a economia do país. No entanto, o setor gera grande quantidade de resíduos sólidos. Este trabalho visa avaliar o resíduo em pó de MDF, com o intuito de identificar a melhor forma de valorização do mesmo. Para isso, realizou-se um diagnóstico ambiental de uma fábrica de móveis de pequeno porte, e procedeu-se a caracterização do resíduo de MDF na forma de pó. O diagnóstico ambiental identificou que o resíduo na forma de pó está presente em todas as etapas do processo. As etapas de maiores impactos ambientais são a de corte e acabamento/polimento, já que nestas ocorre a maior geração de resíduo sólido, bem como consumo de energia e geração de material particulado. A caracterização da amostra identificou o material com algumas limitações para aplicações em processos industriais, mas que podem ser atenuadas com algum tipo de beneficiamento, podendo o mesmo ser utilizado como carga de reforço em matriz polimérica.

The Tigre Mining Co. of Mexico, owned by the Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co. of Kansas City, decided early in 1910 to enlarge its mill, which consisted of a concentrator milling 3,000 tons of ore per month. The enlarged plant was designed to crush and concentrate 6,000 of ore and to cyanide 7,500 tons per month. The extra tonnage cyanided was to be obtained from tailings which were stored below the old mill. Power was supplied to the old mill from four boilers; a 150-h-p. Corliss engine and two Weber 60-h-p. gas-engines using producer-gas made from charcoal. The total horse-power required, including 60 h-p. used for machine-drills in the mine, was approximately 275. Cord-wood cost $4.32 per cord, 8 by 4 by 3 ft., and charcoal $15 per ton. The fuel supply in the surrounding country was approaching exhaustion; more than 150 mules and 50 men were engaged in cutting and transporting this fuel, and the unsettled political conditions in Sonora were such that it would be practically impossible to keep an organization of this kind together. The price of fuel was steadily rising and at times it became almost impossible to get sufficient fuel to operate. It was estimated that the enlarged plant, together with the mine, would require 750 h-p., as follows: Horse-Power. The attempt has been made to manufacture high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels by pressurized electro-slag remelting furnace with maximum nitrogen pressure of 7MPa. To obtain high nitrogen content in steels, the compound electrodes with different nitrogen sources (FeCrN, Si3N4) were prepared. Using the Si3N4 as the nitrogen alloying source, the silicon contents in ingots were prone to be out of the specification range, and the electric current fluctuated greatly and the surface qualities of the ingots were poor. The surface qualities of the ingots were improved using FeCrN as nitrogen alloying source. The sound and compact macrostructure ingot with the maximum nitrogen above 1.0wt% could be obtained. A series of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels have been successfully developed by this method. The mechanical and pitting corrosion resistance properties of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels were investigated. The results show that the steels exhibit excellent mechanical and pitting corrosion resistance properties.

O desenvolvimento de nanopartículas magnéticas vem recebendo bastante atenção de pesquisadores devido a sua potencial aplicação em diferentes campos tecnológicos, principalmente em microeletrônica e medicina. A magnetita nanoparticulada é particularmente atraente para estas finalidades, pois apresenta comportamento superparamagnético, biocompatibilidade e resistencia à oxidação. Neste estudo foi avaliado a síntese das nanopartículas pela coprecipitação. Para isso foi observado a influência da razão molar de Fe+2/Fe+3 e da variação de concentração de NaOH na nucleação e precipitação das partículas. Sendo possível, determinar os melhores parâmetros para obtenção das mesmas e garantindo as suas propriedades. Para a constatação estrutural, a caracterização das amostras foi realizada por difração de raios X (DRX). A razão molar de Fe+2/Fe+3 se mostrou uma variável importante, em razões muito pequenas o resultado obtido foi goetita, enquanto a síntese a partir da razão 0,5 observou-se apenas a magnetita. E a variação da concentração de OH- teve influência no tamanho das partículas nucleadas, no qual menores partículas foram obtidas em meios mais básicos.

A preliminary model has been developed for autogenous pebble milling using information obtained from studies on ball milling and SAG milling. The model treats the breakage as the weighted sum of first-order breakage of smaller particles by tumbling pebbles, non-first order breakage of larger particles which are too large to be nipped properly by pebbles, autogenouS fracture and chipping of larger lumps to form pebbles, and autogenous fracture and abrasion of pebbles. The model includes the effects of residence time distribution, classification through the exit grate, and a mass transfer relation which describes the accumulation of fine material in the mill. Example simulations are given, based on breakage parameters determined from batch grinding tests in laboratory mills. fracture breakage and abrasion. In the development of these preliminary mass balance equations it will be assumed that breakage by fracture is first-order, but this assumption will be modified later in the paper. It will also be assumed that the residence time distribution of a long autogenous mill can be described by an equivalent series of m fully-mixed mills, with a classification action imposed on the mill contents by the discharge grate. Size distributions are expressed as a v2 geometric series, numbered 1 for the top size down to n for the fines, or "sink" interval. If the holdup in the mill is W then the rate of breakage of material in size interval i is given by SiwiW, where wi is the fraction of material in size interval i, and Si is -the overall specific breakage rate of size i material (fraction per unit time).

"Newly prepared bipolar membrane is promising to become a key material of an electrolyser for a production process of strong reducing solvent. This research is basic research for using bipolar membranes as electrolysers of reducing agents, Cr(II), TI(III) and V (II) on the laboratory scale. In this report, a bipolar membrane was tried with an electrolyser, reducing chromic chloride to chromous chloride. An analysis of mass balance demonstrates advantages of it over the former electrolyser equipped with an anion and/or. cation exchange membrane. The effects of current density and concentration of Cr(lll) on the reduction rate of Cr(II) and the current efficiency were examined No deterioration of the bipolar membrane resulted from the electrolytic reduction of Cr(III). O presente trabalho faz a caracterização microestrutural e mecânica da liga de alumínio 3105 submetida a duas técnicas de Deformação Plástica Severa (NECAE - Extrusão em Canais Não-Equiangulares, e Laminação Assimétrica), a fim de se eleger entre as duas técnicas a melhor para se obter uma microestrutura mais encruada e refinada. As avaliações microestrutural e mecânica foram feitas por Difração de Raios-X (DRX), análise dilatométrica e ensaio de dureza Vickers, as quais permitiram avaliar de forma indireta o grau de encruamento / refinamento da estrutura resultante de cada processo de Deformação Plástica Severa, avaliando o incremento de dureza, perfil do pico de DRX e temperatura de início de recristalização. Conclui-se que a técnica mais efetiva no encruamento/refinamento da estrutura foi a Laminação Assimétrica, tendo em vista a geometria adotada na técnica de NECAE.

Inseridas em um mercado extremamente competitivo, as empresas siderúrgicas vêm buscando aprimorar seus processos produtivos e de gestão de forma a reduzir custos de produção e garantir sua sustentabilidade. A principal parcela do custo de produção da empresa em relação a um aço inoxidável ligado ao Cromo e Níquel está na Aciaria, e a carga metálica representa mais de 80% deste valor. Visando aumentar a competitividade, foi aberto um projeto para otimizar a carga metálica na Aciaria. A redução da mistura de escórias é uma fase deste projeto. O propósito do presente trabalho é mostrar a metodologia adotada para otimizar o processo de recuperação de sucata das escórias de aços inoxidáveis, minimizando a ocorrência de misturas de escórias, para maximizar seus teores de Ni e Cr e, consequentemente, reduzir o uso de fontes mais nobres e caras destes elementos. Foi adotada a filosofia “Zero de Escória no Chão” e, para alcançar este objetivo, várias ações foram implantadas. Considerando 2011 como base 100%, o teor médio de Ni da sucata recuperada de 3XX aumentou 45% em 2013 e o teor médio de Cr subiu 36% na sucata recuperada neste mesmo período. Como consequência direta da redução da mistura de escórias de grupos de aços diferentes ao longo de todo fluxo produtivo, ocorre a redução dos residuais de Ni e Cr nos aços carbono e elétricos e de Ni nos aços 4XX. A metodologia adotada foi eficiente e os objetivos do projeto foram alcançados.

The effects of the slagging components Al2O3, CaO and MgO on the thermodynamics and phase equilibria of the gas/slag/matte system with major elements “Cu2O”-“FeO”-SiO2-S are characterised using an integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling approach. The experimental technique included high-temperature equilibration experiments using a spinel substrate in controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/SO2/Ar), quenching of the sample and subsequent measurement of the compositions of equilibrium phases with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). Thermodynamic modelling is undertaken using the computer system FactSage. In previous experimental studies on this system, the separate effects of Al2O3, CaO and MgO were determined. In the present investigation, the combined effects of these additional components are investigated at 1200oC and P(SO2) = 0.25 atm and a range of P(O2)’s. Special attention is paid to ensuring chemical equilibrium is achieved in each case, for this reason possible kinetic factors are systematically analysed. The results obtained are presented in the form of graphs showing the compositions of matte and slag phases as functions of copper concentration (matte grade). The new experimental data are used for the improvement of the thermodynamic database for multicomponent copper-containing systems. The effects of the slagging elements on this multicomponent system will be presented in the paper. INTRODUCTION Whilst Fe-O-Si form the principal components of copper smelting and refining slags, additional impurities are present in industrial practice typically at 2–5 wt.% Al2O3, 1–4 wt.% CaO and 1–2 wt.% MgO levels (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002). These elements are introduced into the slag as impurities in concentrates and other feedstocks, in fluxes added to the process and in refractory materials. Understanding, and accurate description, of the changes that take place in the smelting process in the presence of these additional elements is of major importance to the optimization of industrial operations. Although experimental data are available on slag/copper matte equilibria, further work is needed to accurately characterise the influence of Al2O3, CaO and MgO on phase equilibria and elemental distributions of elements in gas/slag/matte systems. The individual effects of the Al2O3, CaO and MgO slagging components on equilibrium phase assemblages under selected conditions have been quantified in a recent series of studies on the Cu–Fe–O–S–Si-(Al, Ca, Mg) gas-slag-matte-metal system (Fallah- Mehrjardi, Hayes, & Jak, 2018; Fallah-Mehrjardi, Hidayat, Hayes, & Jak, 2017a, 2017b; Hidayat, Fallah-Mehrjardi, Hayes, & Jak, 2018a, 2018b; Jak et al., 2016; D. Shishin, Decterov, & Jak, 2018; Denis Shishin, Hayes, & Jak, 2018). Since, thermodynamically, the condensed phases do not behave ideally, it is to be expected that the effects of individual elements may not be additive, and the additional interactions between the Al2O3, CaO and MgO slagging components will also have to be taken into account. These additional effects are expected to be smaller than those of the individual components, so higher accuracy is needed. The present paper describes analysis of the precision and accuracy of the experimental technique on multi-component, multi-phase equilibria in these systems to enable the combined effects of Al2O3 + CaO + MgO on slag/matte/spinel equilibria, i.e. for high Fe/SiO2, to be accurately measured. The effects of Al2O3, CaO and MgO on the gas - slag - matte are analysed using a thermodynamic modelling approach with the computer package FactSage.

The relation between the course, or path, of the fracture of metals and alloys, produced in service or as a result of certain laboratory tests, and the crystalline units of which such materials are composed is of utmost importance. The fracture of normal material is, in general, intracrystalline, i.e., it consists of a break across the grains rather than of a separation between them. An interorystalline fracture indicates either that the metal is of very inferior quality or that the break occurred under very unusual conditions, e.g., at a very high temperature. The usual mechanical tests, when applied to metals of the type that breaks with an intercrystalline fracture, merely measure the coherence of adjacent grains for one another and reveal little as to the real properties of the metal itself. Even such a soft plastic substance as lead, under suitable conditions, may be rendered so weak and brittle that the metal can be easily crumbled into powder by the fingers although the constituent grains have lost none of the intrinsic properties of lead. Various erroneous explanations of this behavior of lead have appeared in the scientific literature, the change being described usually as an allotropic one. The importance, in an industrial sense, of a proper explanation of this type of the corrosion of lead justifies the description of the type of metal deterioration that follows. Corroded Lead Sheathing In Figs. 1 and 2 are shown two typical specimens of corroded lead sheathing selected from materials submitted to the Bureau of Standards for examination. Fig; 1 shows a section of the sheathing of an aerial cable; Fig. 2, that of the lead covering of a subterranean feeder-line of an electric light system. In this case the deterioration had proceeded to a much great'er extent than in the case shown in Fig. 1 so that certain portions of the metal could easily be crumbled into a coarse gray powder by the fingers. It is not often that the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management, Office of the Solicitor, and Interior Board of Land Appeals (IBLA) jointly act to do the mining industry a good turn. That happened, however, in the recent decision, Schlosser v. Pierce, 92 IBLA 109 (1986). It was ruled that the theorized "independent mine requirement" was not a part of the discovery standard for mining claim validity under the 1872 Mining Law. The phrase "independent mine requirement" would require the mineral reserves within the boundaries of each individual mining claim in a claim group to support an independent economic mining operation. This, without regard to the fact that reserves on adjacent claims could be mined in a group operation, resulting in greatly reduced mining and marketing costs per ton of ore. Such a rule would render invalid under the 1872 Mining Law mining claims for almost all low-grade, high-tonnage, commercially valuable mineral deposits. Until the Schlosser case, no judicial or administrative decision had addressed the issue of the independent mine requirement. Nonetheless, a series of Interior decisions in the 1970s implied such a rule. Even the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation reluctantly concluded in 1984 that, "each claim to be valid must be capable of being operated at a profit independently of any other claim," the Foundation did criticize the rule as "excessively stringent" and urged the adoption of a "more realistic rule." Fortunately, the IBLA did just that in Schlosser when it ruled that the "application of a requirement that each claim be independently capable of being mined and marketed at a profit is rejected," 92 IBLA at 134. Now, a year after the 1986 decision, there remains some unwarranted confusion over the issue resolved in, and the meaning of, the Schlosser decision. There is no need for this confusion. The Interior Department's decision is a clear and legally sound victory for the mining industry. Grazing rights vs. mining claims The Schlosser case was an unusual mining claim contest. A private contest was brought before the Interior Department. Schlosser was a federal grazing lessee and surface owner. He filed against Pierce, the locator of a group of mining claims for bentonite over the same lands. At a hearing before interior's administrative law judge (alj), Schlosser's counsel began laying the foundation for the independent mine requirement. Counsel asked the mining claimant's expert whether he would go through the permitting procedure, road building, and reclamation just to mine the amount of bentonite on any one claim in the group. Schlosser's counsel proceeded with this line of questioning for each of the 16 claims in the group. Pierce's mining expert testified that the tonnages of mineral on any individual claim could not be mined, processed, and marketed at a profit if only one individual claim was considered. However, if the claims in the group were operated jointly, all the mineral could be mined, processed, and marketed at a profit.

During the last decade, since most smelters have included Cottrell plants as standard equipment for the removal of dust from furnace gases, it has become apparent that smeltermen have had a new problem slowly developing. This problem has manifested itself in accelerated destruction of, or serious injury to, the masonry of flues and chimneys. The masonry either spalls, if the material is of low strength, or acquires large major cracks, either of which conditions attains such proportions that renewals or reinforcing become necessary to maintain the structure in satisfactory condition. This paper describes the failure of a large modern brick chimney to such an extent that its safety was vitally impaired; the investigation of its condition; the methods of restoring satisfactory strength to the structure; and the installation of an acidproof lining. Plant History The Clarkdale smelter of the United Verde Copper Co., which was put in operation in 1915, was primarily a blast-furnace plant. The smelter at Jerome had utilized blast furnaces exclusively, and in the design of the new (1915) plant, blast-furnace smelting evidently was considered of major importance, the smelting equipment consisting of four blast furnaces 48 in. by 26 ft. 8 in. and three reverberatories, each 19 by 101 ft. The latter, supplemented by roasters, were intended mainly for handling dust and fine ore resulting from the crushing operations. The original roasting equipment consisted of six six-hearth Wedge roasters, six more being added in 1917. All gases from blast furnaces, reverberatories, roasters and converters were conducted by means of suitable flues and dust chambers to one central chimney. This chimney, 30 ft. inside diameter by 400 ft. high, is a self-supporting steel structure, lined with 4-in. brick supported on steel shelf angles, riveted to the shell, spaced about 15 ft. vertically. The bricks were of local manufacture, not particularly hard-burned, and were laid in ordinary cement-fireclay-sand mortar. No record is available to indicate that any particular effort was made to secure an acidproof mortar. The cost of reclamation can vary widely, depending on the primary objectives of the restoration activities. statistics in this study originated from State files, publications, and personal communications relating to restoration and pollution control measures for previously mined lands (orphan lands) and active mines. Reclamation of orphan lands is generally considered a public burden and constitutes an economic problem. All work reported here was completed under government contract, by the lowest bidder, with money coming from State and/or Federal funds. Cost would have been substantially lower had the reclamation been concurrent with mining. Several persons connected with some of the projects have observed that costs could probably be reduced by at least one half, if the reclamation had been conducted along with the mining. The expense of clearing and grubbing of volunteer vegetation, disposal of buried trees and brush, loosing of compacted spoil, and re-establishing access to areas could be saved. In addition, a contracting firm doing the work for a government agency would have mobilization costs and receive a profit. Mining companies also are profit conscious and would consider these costs in anticipating their profits (e.g., overhead would be less if reclamation is integrated with mining). The data presented here should serve as a guide for estimating and determining cost ranges, however, it should be recognized that variations exist. Adjustments may be necessary from the standpoint of physical conditions, economic conditions, price changes, and more restrictive requirements of recent surface mining laws. Reclamation conditions, procedures and successes in the eastern United States, particularly in Appalachia, have no bearing on conditions to be expected in the western United States. The situations are wholly different. Reclamation in the West differs from th t in the East, primarily because of aridity especially a during the summer months 1). Because of the many variables and differences between reclamation in eastern and western areas, they will be discussed separately.

Este estudo tem como objetivo apresentar as etapas, os desafios e melhorias na implantação da área da logística da Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) na primeira Zona de Processamento de Exportação (ZPE) do país que está localizada no estado do Ceará e tem a siderúrgica CSP como a primeira empresa a se instalar nessa área de livre comércio com o exterior. Nesse contexto a logística tem um papel importante e fundamental no planejamento e controle minucioso dos fluxos de entrada e saída de materiais e produtos cumprindo todas as legislações federais e estaduais de uma ZPE. O estudo é realizado através da análise dos conceitos logísticos de uma siderúrgica e das normas e portarias que regem uma ZPE. Os resultados alcançados estão pautados nas sugestões e alterações das disposições legais e na integração entre os sistemas controlados pela Receita Federal com o sistema da CSP. O estudo tem como conclusão que todas as melhorias que foram propostas e alcançadas nessa implantação pioneira, proporcionaram maior eficiência e agilidade nos processos de controle aduaneiro da ZPE voltados para uma siderúrgica, mantendo continuamente a interação entre todas as entidades legais sem impactar a dinâmica operacional da siderúrgica, agregando grande valor para a CSP.

Many factors seem to indicate a stabilized anthracite production of approximately 50 million tons per year. The present war has stimulated demand in the Cana¬dian and New England markets, which were formerly furnished with a portion of their needs from Great Britain and other European countries. Neither has there been any material change in the "bootleg coal" situation. This problem is more serious in the Southern anthracite field than in the Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton areas. Many miners are involved in tasks at the mine site that are similar to those sub-tasks performed in general construction, maintenance and repair (CMR) type work activities. As a result, many of the injuries in the mining industry today can be traced to employees performing these CMR type work activities. Indeed, a recent analysis of a major aggregate company revealed that 65% of all injuries documented originated from performing such CMR activities. It is hypothesized that the number of injuries to miners performing construction, maintenance and repair (CMR) work activities on mine property may be reduced through improved training that focuses on better hazard recognition using the numerous visual and other cues that are available for evaluating workplace health and safety hazards. To this end, researchers at NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have merged two proven methods of training miners to recognize hazards, stereoscopic (3-D) slides and the concept of degraded images, into this training program. Stereoscopic (3-D) slides have been shown in earlier NIOSH and U.S. Bureau of Mines research to be an effective training aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize various geologic and mining-induced irregularities that can cause groundfalls.3 They realistically portray the natural mine environment, and thus are an excellent training aid for teaching miners to recognize such visual cues. The degraded image concept, originally developed by the military and used for target detection training, describes scenes where the target is partially hidden by cloud cover, dust, rain, natural barriers, buildings, or other obstructions that can camouflage or confuse the target. Research had shown that flight observers who were trained with less than ideal (or degraded) pictures were more successful in subsequent identification of targets than those trained using ideal (or highlighted) pictures of targets. In order to investigate this concept for training miners to recognize hazards, NIOSH researchers developed a prototype hazard recognition training program using such mining scenes. A control program based on traditional highlighted mining scenes was also developed. Both programs were applied to subjects in a field experiment. Results indicated that miners trained with the degraded images did significantly better on a follow-up test of hazard recognition.4 This hazard recognition program teaches trainees to look for hazards in a more realistic manner than that of the control program. This specific training program for CMR activities involves using the degraded image concept and 3-D slides. The module is designed to educate workers on hazard identification techniques and safe work practices. It focuses on teaching miners techniques for recognizing visual (sight) cues, and then uses these cues to evaluate mining conditions. It should be stressed that other senses, such as sound can also play an important role in hazard detection.

IT is only within the past 10 years that serious attempt appears to have been made to improve rotary drilling fluids by the application of the principles of colloid chemistry, although the use of chemicals to control the rheological properties of clay slips has long been known in the ceramic industry. The main difficulty apparently lay in the lack of a complete analysis of all of the functions of a drilling fluid in the drilling of the well, together with the lack of adequate consideration of how colloid science could be applied to secure these ends, and particularly how apparent antithetical properties of the fluid could be compromised. Thus one analysis1 of the many requirements of a drilling fluid proved conclusively that the viscosity should be low, in order that cuttings and entrained gas might be eliminated effi-ciently in the settling ditch, while the loss in carrying capacity accompanying low viscosity could be regained by increasing either the density of the mud or the upward velocity of the mud stream in the annular space of the well, and the danger of sticking of the drill stem due to rapid settling in case of enforced suspension of drilling operations could be eliminated by enhancing the thixotropic properties of the fluid. The desired properties of the drilling fluid having thus been established, it was a natural step to treat the fluid with vis-cosity-reducing chemicals, such as salts of weak organic acids1,2-for example, sodium tannate or gallate-and to adjust the pH to the alkaline side to such a degree of thixo-tropy as would give low viscosity and low yield point under the conditions of flow prevailing in the settling ditch, but rapid gelation and high yield point when quiescent in the annular space during shut-downs. In fact, flow in the settling ditch should be just short of turbulent while flow in the well, together with the flow of mud past the cuttings, is practically always turbulent. The use of chemicals other than those mentioned, such as Calgon (sodium hexametaphosphate) and certain other phosphates together with sodium tannate, has now become standard practice and it is the consensus that this method of treatment has proved to be an important step in the development of the art of drilling oil wells.

Nowadays, there are some new requirements for the supermarket floors. The floors are loaded by high point- and moving-loads. In spite of this fact, it is necessary to ensure the stiffness of the floor and the stiffness of its support. When pile foundations are designed in the case of weak soil, the piles are recommended under the foundations of the supermarket and also under the floor layers. The example of foundation of a typical supermarket located on long­standing municipal dumping ground is presented. Indirect foundation - CFA piles, 0.5 m in diameter and 4.5 to 20.0 m long, was de­signed. Fifteen trial loading tests were carried out.
