Our program has been dictated by the necessity of broadening our markets through converting potash chemicals to fertilizers more in demand than potassium chloride. To this end, we have undertaken studies on methods of preparing potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate by rather simple conversion. When mixtures of sodium and magnesium sulphates are reacted with potassium chloride, the ratio of sodium to magnesium is quite pertinent. A range of ratios has been selected and the conversions of potassium chloride to sulphate have been assessed by cyclic operations. Results from experimental procedures for producing potassium nitrate are also avail-able. The influence on recovery for systems including organic solvents is assessed for a variety of situations.

Performance of tunnel boring machines - usually expressed in terms of penetration per revolution - is determined by relations between machine thrust and torque, head diameter and rock strength. It can be shown that for a given machine power and head diameter there is only one rock strength at which the machine performs optimally. In weaker rocks the available torque limits performance and in stronger rocks, the available thrust. Performance data shows that, historically, machines have been designed to cut weaker rocks. Optimization of thrust is required to improve performance in stronger rocks.

In any construction project involving explosives, care must be taken to protect workers from carbon monoxide (CO) generated by blasting operations. CO is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. In general, the first symptoms include headache, fatigue and lightheadedness. At higher exposures to CO, skin flushing, rapid heart rate, and lowered blood pressure occur. At ever, higher exposure levels, decreased attention span is followed by nausea, vomiting, unpaired coordination, fainting, coma, convulsions and, finally, death. The detonation of explosives in blasting operations generates a range of toxic fumes, but CO is the most insidious because it is colorless, odor less, and is long lasting, since it is not readily removed try reaction with ground water, soil or rock. Additionally CO is generated in relatively large quantities compared to other toxic: fumes. CO may continue to seep out of blasted material long after the odor commonly associated with detonated explosives has dissipated. It is never safe to assume as confined space in the vicinity of a blast is clear of toxic fumes. CO may be present even if the area looks Clear and many hours have passed since the last blast.

Single crystals of tantalum, tungsten, and the binary alloys thereof were grown by electron-beam zone melting and tested in tension between 77° and 373°K. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature increased sharply with solute concentration, for both tungsten-rich and tantalum-rich alloys; apparently, the maximum transition temperature exists near the 50 pet concentration. Twinning was observed to be a consequence of cleavage-crack propagation. Cleavage occurred on(100)planes, and extensive tearing and "river markings" were present. The onset of brittleness could not be associated with any change in deformation mode, the yield point phenomenon, or the large rise in yield stress with decreasing temperature. Cleavage was observed to initiate at either the specimen surface, or subgrain boundaries. The observation was made that the grain boundaries of Polycrystalline materials are probably even better as nucleation sites for fracture, and are responsible for brittleness at high temperatures and lower solute concentrations than those of the corresponding single crystals. TUNGSTEN and tantalum, the two high-melting neighbors in the third transition period of the periodic table, present striking contrasts. Although both are bee, tungsten has far higher elastic moduli, and the highest ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT) of all the pure metals.' Tantalum, however, is ductile at liquid helium temperatures. Large strain aging and yield point phenomena are observed in tantalum,2,3 but only to a lesser extent in tungsten.4 Tungsten work-hardens at a high rate,5 whereas this effect is negligible in tantalum.' Since the mutual solid solubility of these two metals is complete,7 and no ordering has yet been reported in the binary system, the possibility of depressing tungsten's DBT by tantalum additions was considered. Also, tungsten additions to tantalum could produce hard, high-melting alloys which might be ductile at room temperature. Such alloys offered excellent bases for complex alloy development, particularly with regard to the effect of rhenium on Group VI metals.8"10 In addition, there was the opportunity to examine flow and fracture modes in the vicinity of the DBT, with particular emphasis on the correlation between brittleness and fundamental deformation mechanisms. Myers11 has reported that recrystallized alloys with up to 10 pet W in tantalum are ductile at room temperature, but alloys with 20 pct W could not be swaged at temperatures as high as 500°C. The whole spectrum of Ta-W alloys has been surveyed by Braun, Sedlatschek, and Kiefferl2 using sintered powder compacts. In addition to some physical properties they reported a maximum hardness at about 50 at. pet W, dropping to much lower hardness levels for the pure components. They were able to cold work tantalum-base alloys with as much as 30 pet W and to warm work tungsten-base alloys with up to 20 pet Ta by procedures similar to those used for pure tungsten. EXPERIMENTAL In order to study deformation modes and to keep the impurity concentrations at a minimum, electron-beam zone melting was used to prepare single crystals of high purity. The electron-beam zone melting apparatus is similar to that described by Calverley, Davis, and ever" and incorporates a grid control rectifier to maintain control of emission current. Pure metals were refined by making three zone passes at 4 mm per min up the rod. Alloys were prepared by melting together wire of one constituent on a previously melted rod of the major constituent. Subsequently, two zone passes were made in opposite directions to level the composition after the manner suggested by pfann.14 Purification of the starting materials was accomplished by evaporation of the several impurities, and the degree to which this was accomplished is indicated in the chemical analyses of Table I. It is twenty years since the writer made his first molybdenum steels and others were making them commercially five years earlier but the prevailing opinion seems to be that molybdenum steels are new; from time to time the daily press speaks of important discoveries in Europe and intimates that American steel makers have much to learn in regard to alloy steels. The earlier experiments were largely confined to the use of relatively high percentages of molybdenum in tool steels and permanent magnet steels. Recent developments deal with the types of alloy structural steels used for airplane, automobile, and other engineering requirements; in these, the molybdenum content is usually less than 1 per cent. The earlier types generally have been unsuccessful commercially, but the newer types of steels are becoming of increasing importance. The war showed our dependence on foreign sources for alloying metals; molybdenum alone is widely distributed in the United States and seemingly abundant. Many deposits are not now of commercial interest, owing to location and relatively small amount of ore available, but other deposits are being developed and a stable source of supply seems well assured. In tool and magnet steels, it was early found that 1 part of molybdenum was equivalent to from 2 to 2.5 parts of tungsten. The permanent magnet steels investigated by Madame Curie,' in 1898, contained from 3.36 to 4.05 per cent. molybdenum; in 1902, Dr. E. L. French and the writer thoroughly tested steels containing from 2.0 to 4.0 per cent. These steels gave satisfactory tests for permanence, but were low in residual density and much more sensitive to hardening than the corresponding tungsten products. We discontinued work with them, therefore, and have no advice that such steels have been used commercially here or abroad. "This paper describes the evolution of the Waste Management Program at the Lupin Mine through the years 1982 - 1988. The program was developed in response to the terms and conditions of the Water Licence issued to the mine in 1981 by the Northwest Territories Water Board. Echo Bay Mines Lupin Mine is located on the western shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories about 80 km. south of the Arctic Circle.The gold mine commenced production in 1982 and the Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept. Due to an expansion of the mill circuitry and increased throughput, it was apparent that the total containment concept would require reevaluation since discharge from the pond would be required within a few years. During the initial years of production, an investigative program was established to determine the most effective means for treating the tailings pond water. This program incorporated both laboratory studies as well as monitoring of the tailings pond contents and environmental conditions as the impoundment area was filling. The program showed that natural degradation phenomena, if properly utilized, are effective in lowering the concentrations of all contaminants to within Licence limits with the exception of arsenic. To ensure compliance with arsenic limits, an iron salt was added to cause arsenic to precipitate from solution in the tailings pond.As a result of our studies, the tailings management system finally implemented at Lupin Mine includes the following components:Tailings pulp retention cells constructed by dyking off one end of the tailings impoundment area.Two tailings ponds in series operated in a sequential decant and fill fashion.An iron salt solution preparation and metering system.A syphon system into which the iron salt solution is injected as the contents of the first pond are decanted into the second pond.A second syphon system for decanting the contents of the second pond to the receiving streamThis paper discusses the findings and conclusions of the waste management investigative program, describes the civil work completed to reach our final operating scenario, describes the sequence of operating the treatment system, reviews performance data, and comments on abandonment and restoration of the tailings impoundment area."

Owing to improvements in computer capacity, it is now possible to undertake fully coupled or partially coupled, three-dimensional (3D) hydromechanical Finite Element (FE) simulation of mines, including explicit representations of large numbers of discontinuities. The analysis requires fewer assumptions than uncoupled analysis or two-dimensional (2D) analysis, but may require a change in how hydrological data is collected. The way hydrological data is incorporated in stability assessment and the approach to uncertainty in hydrological information also requires discussion. The current procedures for this type of analysis are discussed, along with some practical difficulties and teachings from early applications. A work flow for integration of 3D hydromechanical modelling with pit planning and some considerations for the management of uncertain data are also proposed.

Defeitos internos do tipo trinca off-corner são um dos principais problemas relacionados à qualidade em tarugos de aços especiais lingotados continuamente. Este tipo de defeito é bastante crítico, pois além de se apresentar de forma descontínua no tarugo e, consequentemente na barra laminada, não é detectável pelos equipamentos de inspeção em linha usualmente utilizados para garantir a qualidade final do material. Neste trabalho, foram avaliadas amostras de barras laminadas de um aço baixo carbono com e sem a presença do defeito do tipo trinca off-corner a fim de estabelecer um método que permita avaliar a criticidade da trinca. Estes resultados foram relacionados com os principais fatores que influenciam na formação deste defeito, proporcionando alterações de processo com o objetivo de minimizar a sua ocorrência.

The domestic concentrate used by the Shanghai Meishan Metallurgical Corporation in Nanjing contains significant siderite, magnetite and haematite, the siderite having a substantial influence on its sintering behaviour. On the basis of experimental findings and published information it is proposed that siderite decomposition starts at c.400 degrees C and results in the formation of CO and/or H2, which then reduces the haematite to magnetite prior to the initiation of high-temperature sintering; inter-mixed particles of Australian haematite and pisolite ores also undergo significant reduction. As the gaseous reduction process is so effective, low-temperature forms of silico-ferrite of Ca and Al (SFCA) cannot form even at high sinter basicity. The bench-scale results were confirmed in a pilot-scale facility whose sinters consisted mainly of magnetite, high-temperature SFCA and glass, which is typical of sinters formed from mixes with high magnetite levels

It has' been found that lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh Coal bed cause the subsidence coefficient to vary within the area of the subsidence trough. This precludes the use of European developed predictive models, which are based upon a constant subsidence coefficient. Regression analysis of the distribution of subsidence coefficients from 11 Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, longwall panel studies on the location relative to the edge of the panel has yielded a third degree polynomial equation. This equation has been incorporated into a BASIC computer program for use on a personal computer that allows users with no previous knowledge of the theory of subsidence to predict vertical movements over typical longwall panels in the Northern Appa1achian Coal Basin.

The mining ordinance of Costa Rica dates from 1830. In spite of the numerous attempts to enact a new ordinance , it has been so much amended and reamended during the hundred years of its existence either expressly or , more often , by implication , and sometimes by Executive Decrees of which the validity has been called in question - that in most cases no one but a lawyer thoroughly conversant with Costa Rican mining practice could properly advise with reference to it . The present attempt at a digest of these laws is based on the 1929 edition of Bolandi and Johanning - the only source available in Washington . Apparently this edition has no official character , and the editors themselves often made surmises although one would think that definite facts would be available in Costa Rica where it was published .

THAT the march of civilization has synchronized with progress in the art of utilizing minerals is a proposition that needs no proof. It is a truism. Historians conveniently divide the time that the earth has been inhabited into the Stone Age, the Bronze (more accurately the Copper) Age, and the Iron Age. As archeologists are not entirely in accord as to dates, and as a few centuries make no difference whatever to this particular story, it may be approximated that the Age of Copper began about 8000 years B.C. and that it gave place to the Age of Iron about 1000 years B.C. The logic of this succession-stone, copper, iron-lies in the fact that copper first displaced stone, then iron displaced copper as the standard material out of which the utensils, implements, and weapons, the utilitarian articles of antiquity, were made. After the advent of iron, the mining and smelting of copper continued. Copper and bronze found use particularly in objects of artistic and ornamental nature; but the superior qualities of iron for many purposes were recognized. Useful manufactures of those days consisted principally of knives, hammers, chisels, spear-heads, arrow-heads, and battle-axes. First these were made of stone, then of copper and bronze, then of iron-particularly as there was plenty of iron ore, and the metallurgy was comparatively easy of accomplishment. Of course, the periods of transition dragged slowly. Definite as were the three Ages dominated by the mineral substance from which they get their names, ten or fifteen centuries probably elapsed from the time the first iron was smelted in a small charcoal furnace until it became the accepted material from which to shape a battle-axe. The Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has had occasion from time to time to examine rocks, ores and concentrates from the Yatukoula goldfield, Fiji. The results of the examinations have been supplied as Mineragraphic Reports and have been supplementary to various investigations carried out by the mining companies on ore treatment, or by visiting geologists on the nature of the rocks and lodes. The presence of tellurides was determined in 1935, though incorrectly as nagyagite. The general absence of lead, except in traces, was soon afterwards discovered, and it came to be recognised as the mines were opened up that the chief telluride minerals on the field were sylvanite and native tellurium. Specimens of the tellurides have been provided from time to time by E. G. Theodore, Managing Director of the Emperor Mines Ltd., and of the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines N.L., and further material was recently obtained, as the result of a visit to the field at the invitation of Mr. Theodore.The aim of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the tellurides in these specimens. The construction of tailings facilities and heap leach pads for gold mining operations generally requires the installation of one or more impermeable liners beneath the structures to satisfy environmental regulations and prevent the leakage of gold bearing solutions. Liners are usually constructed using clay soils or synthetic membranes, such as high density polyethelene. Low permeability soil liners can be constructed from natural clays, well graded soils with only a small clay content, or sandy soils blended with a small quantity of imported clay such as bentonite or kaolinite. The permeability of such materials, prgperly pped with good quality control, generally lies in the range of 10- to 10- cm/s, and can be designed to meet minimum prescriptive standards set by regulatory agencies. Important benefits resulting from the use of clay liners include the slow rate of penetration of a saturated wetting front, the decrease in permeability of the liner as it consolidates under the applied load of tailings or ore, and attenuation of potential contaminants in the process solutions. Synthetic liners can be attributed a finite permeability as a result of minute perforations and seaming deficiencies, and possess none of the above properties. Synthetic liners are also, by their nature, relatively thin and even a small head build-up above the liner will result in a large hydraulic gradient across it.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied process mineralogy to investigate a lead and zinc deposit located near Story Creek, Colville Mining District, Alaska. Mineralization is hosted by the Kayak Shale in veins, veinlets, and breccia. Sphalerite and galena, with supergene anglesite, occur in symmetrical quartz veins and between breccia clasts. The study sample analyzed 2.11 percent Pb, 5.37 percent Zn, 0.014 percent Cu, and 1.2 oz/ton Ag. Analyses of crushed products showed that 33 percent of the sample weight, and more than 50 percent of the Pb and 65 percent of the Zn, are in the minus 850 µ m fraction. Liberated grains of sphalerite and galena were found in crushed products finer than 300 µ m. Beneficiation tests indicate the material is amenable to processing by traditional gravity and flotation techniques.

O trabalho consiste na avaliação das Tensões Residuais através da técnica dos Furos-Cegos. O componente em estudo consiste em chapas de Aço A36 aplicadas para compor a estrutura de prensas hidraulicas. Com auxílio do software Solid Works versão 2013, foi realizado a simulação do estado de tensões sofridos pelas chapas quando a prensa hidraulica encontra-se em trabalho, determinando assim o seu fator de segurança. Em seguida, pelo método da aproximação sucessiva, foi adicionado furos-cegos ou furos passantes com diâmetros variados ao longo da geometria das chapas a fim de verificar o comportamento dos estados de tensões. Portanto, através da aplicação de furos-cegos nas chapas, foi possível identificar o diâmetro e posição ideal que permitiu um ganho significativo no fator de segurança das chapas, permitindo assim, reduzir o número de chapas no processo impactando diretamente nos custos e no tempo de fabricação do equipamento.

The Calico silver-barite deposits near Barstow, Calif., are a potentially important resource. Exploration performed by two major mining companies out-lined large tonnages of ore that assayed at 2 to 3 ounces of silver per ton and 7 to 15 percent barite. Laboratory beneficiation work was done by the Bureau of Mines on four samples to develop methods for recovering the silver and/or barite. Cyanidation recovered from 47 to 60 percent of the silver from ore ground to approximately 100 percent minus 325 mesh. Salt roasting minus 10-mesh material, followed by regrinding and cyanidation, recovered 75 to 85 percent of the silver. From 75 to 90 percent of the barite was recovered in a plus 92-percent barite product from either the natural ore or from cyanidation residues. Salt roasting before cyanidation precluded recovery of the high-grade barite concentrate from the leach tails.

IN the early fall of 1925, the writer was conducting, in the Ledoux and Co. labora-tory, New York, experiments directed to-ward ascertaining the effect on its impurity content when cathode copper was subjected to a current of various gases at an elevated temperature below the melting point, The apparatus consisted of a vertical 1-in. dia. silica tube about 12 in. long, heated on the outside, The cathodes were broken to pass a8-in. mesh, and a current of various differ-ent gases was passed up through a 4-in, long column of these loose cathode particles in the vertical tube furnace. Temperature was maintained to i500° to 1600°F. and the gas treatments lasted from 3 to 6 hr, The writer observed that whenever reducing gas (H2 or CO) was used, these cathode par-ticles stuck together at points of contact with each other. The cohesion was so marked and tenacious that an examination was made of the fractured surfaces, when cathode particles were broken from the cluster. Crystal growth was always found to have taken place across the surfaces where separate particles were in contact, but only after all oxides, sulphates, etc, had been completely removed. The idea of a possible new process was then conceived and was disclosed to A. M. Smoot (V. P. Ledoux and Co.) with intent to obtain his views. The first conception as given Smoot was "to gas-clean broken cathodes, put them in an extrusion press, solidify and extrude them at around 1500°F," Smoot's reaction, after a few moments considera-tion, was, "It looks perfectly all right to me."
