For decades, open-pit mine planning algorithms have incorporated geological uncertainty and other elements or characteristics for increasingly realistic representations. Among these complexities is the detailing of downstream processes that occur inside processing plants. Previous studies have demonstrated that the strategic mine plan and mineral concentrator design are coupled, and should therefore be optimized simultaneously within the same quantitative framework. However, existing frameworks offer limited representation of operational modes. This work demonstrates an approach to resolving this gap, in an optimization based on a parallelized Variable Neighborhood Descent (VND). The resulting algorithm embeds mass-balancing linear programming (LP) using a DantzigWolfe decomposition. A case study of a Zn-Pb deposit is presented to show the performance reached.

THE present article makes no claim to be exhaustive, since it cannot contain all the knowledge which scientists and manufacturers of the compounds of the rare earths have gained. The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. Jute fibers are among the lignocellulosic with great potential for use in polymer composites. In this work, polyester matrix composites incorporated jute fabric were investigated for their flexural behavior. Specimens with up to 30% in volume of jute fabric were bend-tested until rupture. The results showed an increase in both the composite mechanical strength, principally to a polyester composite reinforced with 30% in volume of jute fabric. A fractograph analysis by SEM disclosed a moderate adhesion mechanism between the jute fabric and the polyester matrix. This mechanism is apparently responsible for the improved performance of the composites.

"Abstract A seven storey Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia presented residential apartment complex located in the an opportunity for a novel application of Cutter Soil Mix technology (CSM). The development included a two-level basement for car parking which covered the full site area. However, the basement was also required to extend under an existing single story heritage building. Soil conditions comprised 2m of fill overlying medium dense to dense sands that in turn were overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 14-16m depth. The ground water table was located at a depth of approximately 1m below the natural surface level.A site boundary consisting of a reinforced CSM retention system and was designed and installed to allow the excavation to proceed to basement level. Two rows of temporary soils anchors or inclined struts were required to achieve this. A CSM support system for the heritage building was also designed and constructed to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works. The brief for the contract works emphasised that it was vital that settlements of the heritage building be kept within strict limits.CSM is a relatively new introduction to the Australian construction market, using a modified trench cutter to mix a binder slurry with in situ soils, generally to form cut-off walls, retaining walls and soil improvement works. This project is understood to be first application of the CSM for underpinning work in Australia.This paper discusses the site background details leading to the decision by the client to adopt CSM technology, and the design and construction aspects to meet the challenges offered by this project.Introduction190 Newcastle St is a 7-level residential apartment complex located in the Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia. Os aços siliciosos de grão orientado (GO) e de grão não orientado (GNO) são aços ligados ao silício para aplicações elétricas. O aço silício de grão orientado possui as propriedades magnéticas otimizadas na direção de laminação, enquanto o de grão não orientado apresenta boas propriedades em qualquer direção. O aço elétrico de grão orientado tem como principais características as excelentes propriedades magnéticas, desenvolvidas especialmente para a redução das perdas magnéticas e aumento da eficiência de máquinas elétricas. Durante o processo de elaboração do aço o principal desafio é o controle de elementos como alumínio, titânio e enxofre, elementos estes provenientes da carga metálica (sucata e gusa) e adições de ligas na panela. Para este controle ser eficaz a estabilidade da composição química da escória na metalurgia secundária é de fundamental importância. O fluxo produtivo do aço GOAT na metalurgia secundária inicia-se no processo VOD(Vaccum Oxygen Decarburization) com término no forno panela. Este trabalho promoveu a adequação da escória da metalurgia secundária do aço GO através da: i. revisão do padrão de consumo de fundentes, mediante estudo de balanço de massa; ii. desenvolvimento de escória sintética para ajustar finamente a basicidade da escória. Os estudos de balanço de massa apontaram que em determinadas situações havia a necessidade da correção da escória para aquecimento no forno panela; iii. implementação de amostragem de escória ao final do processo VOD para correção da basicidade de escória para aquecimento no forno panela; iv. criação de modelo para correção da basicidade da escória. Após a implementação do projeto o controle da escória no forno panela ficou mais efetivo promovendo: i. redução dos teores finais de alumínio e titânio ao final do processo de elaboração no forno panela; ii.possibilidade de correção da quantidade de escória para aquecimento no forno panela sem comprometer a basicidade de escória requerida no processo; iii. atendimento a faixa otimizada do aço GOAT (M3, maior qualidade) passou de 33% para 65%; iv. redução do desgaste de panelas na elaboração do aço GOAT na metalurgia secundária; v. redução do risco de sucatamento por fora de faixa em alumínio e titânio do aço GOAT na aciaria que representou nos últimos 4 anos uma perda ao processo superior a R$ 1,2 milhão; vi. estabilização da basicidade binária da escória final do Forno Panela dentro da faixa desejável.

Through a joint development program between Bougainville Copper Ltd. and Nordberg, the MP1000 cone crusher was developed and tested during the period between 1982 and 1987. Following the successful prototype work, Bougainville Copper purchased an additional three units. A second prototype was installed at Codelco's El Teniente three-stage crushing installation in 1987. This unit has also completed its test period successfully. Three additional units have been sold, making a total of eight, to date. Two will be installed as secondary crushers in two separate large aggregate plants. The first unit installed in the United States was placed in operation at Vulcan Materials Company's plant in Manassas, Virginia in early May 1990. Another unit is being installed in Asarco's Ray Mines expansion. The Asarco installation will be a SAG MILL pebble crusher producing approximately 600 STPH of nominal 1/2" product. Application Objective The objective was to design a crusher that would fit on an existing 7' foundation with minimum modification and yet be capable of twice the production of a 7' cone crusher. In meeting this objective, the power rating was increased to 1000 HP, the maximum design crushing force was increased and the crusher was designed to operate at higher speeds than an equivalent size Symons cone crusher. Este trabalho visa apresentar alguns resultados obtidos através de ensaios balísticos realizados em sistemas de blindagem multicamada. Seguindo as especificações da norma americana NIJ 0101.06, foram realizados ensaios utilizando munição de calibre 7,62x 51 mm, que possui velocidade acima de 800 m/s. A blindagem multicamada utilizada possui como camada frontal uma pastilha hexagonal cerâmica (alumina dopada com 4% de nióbia), segunda camada de compósito de matriz poliéster reforçada com tecido de juta e como terceira camada uma placa de alumino 5052 H34. A utilização de compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras naturais em substituição às fibras de aramida é de grande interesse, pois além de desempenharem a mesma função no sistema de blindagem, possuem um valor de mercado bem menor. Com os resultados obtidos do ensaio balístico, os valores foram associados com o seu comportamento dinâmico utilizando o método do casamento de impedâncias.

A exaustão das reservas mundiais de minérios de ferro de qualidade, bem como o progressivo avanço das legislações ambientais, são tendências que têm motivado pesquisas acerca do uso de resíduos ricos em ferro e carbono para a fabricação de sínter metalúrgico para uso em alto-forno. Para tal, é necessário que se verifique o comportamento desses materiais nas condições termodinâmicas e cinéticas do processo de sinterização, bem como o seu efeito sobre a qualidade do sínter e sobre os parâmetros de processo da sinterização. Com esse objetivo, em uma primeira etapa do presente projeto de pesquisa, misturas representativas da prática operacional das usinas brasileiras, bem como misturas visando à maximização da reciclagem de resíduos foram testadas em laboratório em condições próximas às da sinterização. Os resultados de análises químicas e mineralógicas obtidos experimentalmente foram comparados com predições termodinâmicas de um modelo de equilíbrio multicomponente, havendo concordância satisfatória.

A survey of the copper mining industry in Western United States revealed that uranium is almost universally present in the solutions resulting from leaching the waste ore dumps to recover copper. The U308 content ranges from about 2 to 15 ppm and a potential production of up to 1,000 tons of U3O8 per year is indicated. A six-week pilot plant test at the Bingham Canyon mine of Kennecott Copper Corporation showed that the uranium is readily recoverable by ion exchange techniques. The design of the new types of countercurrent ion exchange columns and operation of the pilot plant are described.

A large and increasing data base of apatite fission track results from sedimentary and granitic rocks exposed within the south-eastern highlands and along the continental margin ofAustralia provides constraints for the tectonic development of the south-eastern passive margin. The fission track results suggest that many regions of the south-eastern margin of Australia experienced distinct episodes of relatively rapid cooling during the middle Cretaceous to early Tertiary that can be attributed to the effects of rifting. One cooling episode is middle Cretaceous in age and related to denudation of the south eastern highlands from Tasmania to northern New South Wales between ~90 - 100 Ma. Rocks exposed along the present coast line record a later episode of rapid cooling, which is diachronous and decreases in age northward from ~80 to 90 Ma in northern Tasmania to southern New South Wales, ~60 - 80 Ma in central and northern New South Wales, and to ~50 - 60 Ma in southern Queensland. The results are consistent with models suggesting that underplating occurred inward of the rift along the eastern margin of Australia as a result of the onset of continental extension in the Tasman Sea at ~96 Ma. This resulted in a significant change in base level and km-scale denudation of much of the southeastern highlands. Subsequently, as breakup commenced during the Late Cretaceous at ~80 Ma and continued into the Paleocene at ~60 Ma, the second stage of cooling was imprinted on the rocks along the margin. This cooling is probably due to the relaxation of elevated geothermal gradients associated with rifting as well as some denudation. Because rifting was oblique to the present-day coast, different regions record different ages of cooling associated with the rift. The southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria yield ages associated with earlier rifting while regions of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland give ages associated with later rifting.

The quenching technique has been used for- a study of phase velntiorzs within the composition triangle 2CaO.Fe2O3-FeO.Fe2O3 Fe2O3 of the system Ca-Fe-O. Desired total compositions of sanzples were attained by weighing of starting materials in required proportions and keeping them in sealed 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh tubes during equilibration .runs. The liquidus surface has been delineated. the existence of two ternary compounds has been established, and seven ternary inwariant situations have been determined. ONE unit within the research program on refractory oxides in progress in our laboratories is the study of phase relations in the system Ca-Fe-Si-O. The present paper deals with the ternary system 2CaOFe2O3-FeO.Fe2O3-Fe2O3, which is only a small part of the enormously complex quaternary system. Many of the phases occurring in iron ore sinter products have compositions which can be closely approximated within this ternary system, and a knowledge of stability relations existing among these phases may be expected to be a useful guide for improving sintering operations. Two fundamentally different experimental approach es are commonly used in studies of systems containing iron oxides, both permitting control of the oxidation state of Fe. One method consists in keeping constant the oxygen partial pressure of the gas phase in equilibrium with condensed phases (liquid and crystalline). In the other method, which is the one used in the present investigation, the total composition of condensed phases is kept essentially constant by keeping the samples in a gas-tight container. The details of this experimental procedure will be described in a later section. PREVIOUS WORK Extensive studies of phase relations in the bounding binary system FeOFe2O3-Fe2O3 have been reported by Greig, Posnjak, Merwin, and Sosman,' by Darken and Gurry,2, 3 and recently by Phillips and Muan.4 A diagram summarizing the results of these studies is shown in Fig. 1. As you are no doubt aware, virgin copper, tin and zinc are strategic metals today and little, if any, is available in the manufacture of brass and bronze ingots. The source of alloys used in the manufacture of implements of war are, therefore, from ingots made almost exclusively from the refining of available scrap. It is amusing to hear of the unusual physical properties of various alloys because they mean nothing unless the foundryman is able to produce good sound castings. A discussion therefore means little unless something is said about the relative foundry practice of the various brass and bronze alloys. Among the factors that influence the quality of castings produced are: (I) improper gating, (2) wrong pouring temperatures, (3) poor sand conditions, (4) bad melting practice, (5) faulty pattern equipment, (6) metal. It seems to be the consensus of opinion that about 95 per cent of defective castings can be attributed to the first three causes. Metal while a source of trouble at times, is probably the least responsible for foundry difficulties. As you all know, a molder never makes a bad mold. His first thought is to blame the "damn" metal as this is the path of least resistance. Let's consider the "damn" metal and how it is made. In the manufacture of ingot, scrap is collected at various sources and is shipped to the refiner either directly or through the scrap dealer or broker. It is usually sorted, although not always. In working toward a specified chemical analysis, weighed amounts of various grades of scrap metals are melted, and then oxidized by blowing air through the molten bath to rid the metal of detrimental impurities or reduce them to within specification limits after which they are skimmed off with the aid of some added fluxes. The bath of metal is then poled with wood, chemically tested before and after additions are made to bring it up to required specifications, and finally poured into ingots, after which a final chemical and physical examination is made. As mentioned above, the impurities have either been eliminated or reduced to the point where they meet the specifications of all Government Agencies or Technical Societies. Therefore, why worry as to whether castings are to be made from strategic virgin metals or secondary ingots from available scrap. Tests have continuously been made and it is a proven fact that physical properties are no better from virgin metals than from secondary ingots of the same composition. It is definitely more fool-proof to make castings from secondary ingot than from virgin metals because if an error is made in weighing the copper, tin, lead or zinc of the latter, the analysis is off balance. If an error is made in weighing secondary ingots, you merely have more or less metal but the analysis remains constant. Furthermore, when pure copper is melted. it is susceptible to reducing gases as well as oxides. Secondary ingot is already alloyed with natural deoxidizers such as zinc, etc., and the volatilization of the latter also tends to eliminate reducing gases mechanically.

In this paper, an alternative process to recover the value metals from polymetallic gold ore by FeCh leaching was proposed. In the process, gold was recovered by direct cyanidation from the leaching residue, the isolative electrolyte in chloride solution was selected to recover lead, the cementation with copper powder was used to recover silver and the solvent extracting was applied to recover copper and zinc. The total recovery of gold, lead, copper, silver and zinc in the process is 90.8%,96.05%,84.3%,81.98% and 54% to the bullion of gold, lead and silver and sulfate of copper and zinc, respectively. The process conditions selected for FeCh leaching are the temperature of 104°C, leaching time of 6 hours, Fe3+ content of 140 g/l and stoichiometry of FeCl3.

O aço API 5 CT P110 é amplamente utilizado no setor de petróleo e gás no Brasil devido sua elevada resistência mecânica, contudo ele não possui uma boa resistência a corrosão. Com a descoberta do pré-sal, novos desafios surgem neste setor, tornando necessário o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias resistentes aos ambientes agressivos que os materiais serão expostos. A aspersão térmica por HVOF se destaca pela obtenção de revestimentos contra corrosão e resistentes ao desgaste com baixa porosidade e com um relativo baixo custo em comparação a outros processos. Dentre os materiais que podem ser aplicados como revestimentos por aspersão térmica, o níquel se destaca pela ótima resistência à corrosão por formar um óxido protetor na superfície. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo obter e caracterizar revestimentos de níquel obtidos por aspersão térmica HVOF, no aço API 5CT P110. Os revestimentos foram caracterizados morfologicamente por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Foram obtidas curvas de polarização para avaliar o comportamento frente à corrosão e foram realizados ensaios para determinação do coeficiente de atrito. A camada aspergida de níquel apresentou resultados satisfatórios quanto às análises estudadas.

The technical excellence of separation achieved in a mineral concentration process, or any other process where two constituents of any kind are physically separated from each other, is expressed uniquely and quantitatively by the separation efficiency (E,): E. = (R - R,), where R is the percentage of the valuable constituent and R, the percentage of the waste appearing in the concentrate. The separation efficiency meets all the usual requirements of a true efficiency and is independent of the nature of the process used. It can be visualized as the percentage of the feed material that, in effect, actually undergoes complete separation while the rest of the feed is distributed randomly and unchanged into the two separation products. The problem of quantitatively assessing the results of a mineral concentration process recurs whenever one tries to decide which of two similar test results is more desirable. Although economic factors may greatly influence the eventual choice of process, they usually have very little to do with the technical excellence of a separation and are, therefore, not a consideration at this point. Concentrate grade and recovery, used simultaneously are the most widely accepted measures of performance, and if both the grade and the recovery are greater for one case than for another, the choice is simple. However, when the results of closely competitive operations are compared, it often occurs that one set of test results shows a higher grade and a lower recovery than another and the choice is no longer obvious. Laboratory investigations of a mineral concentration process applied to a given feed material can often be designed to yield successive paired values of concentrate grade and recovery over the practical range of the course of a separation process.' These results may be plotted as some combination of the cumulative values of grade, weight recovery, or unit recovery in the concentrate. The resulting correlations for two slightly different sets of conditions can then be compared qualitatively, or even quantitatively in particular cases.2 Such comparisons are not applicable, however, to individual concentration test results. The reduction of a separation test result to a single efficiency figure, preferably as a percentage of ideality, would afford the simplest and most precise means for comparing the results of competitive tests. The effective proportion of feed material that undergoes complete separation in any real concentration process, hereafter referred to as "separation efficiency," is such a figure. It is essily calculated from the usual feed and product data and can even be evaluated, in many cases, from data in publications describing various concentration processes. Mineral Concentration Processes and Their Evaluation Mineral Concentration Processes: The overall concentration process may be subdivided into a liberation process which severs the bonds between unlike mineral species, and a separation process, which sorts the resulting liberated particles into two products—a concentrate rich in mineral A and a tailing lean in mineral A. A perfect mineral concentration process is represented by the idealized scheme shown in Fig. 1 in which liberation and separation are not differentiated. The feed mixture consists of two mineral types which are completely liberated early in the process and then sorted by type. All the mineral particles of type A which respond uniquely to the selection forces acting in the ideal separator, report to the concentrate, while all the mineral particles of type non-A report to the tail-

In 1930 the late Dr. Reinhardt Thiessen set up a method of microscopic analysis and type classification of coal that has since been followed as standard practice in the coal-petrography laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Thiessen's terminology which designated the constituent parts of coal in terms of botanical origin was introduced in 1920.1 The technique, however, of preparing a completely representative series of thin sections from a column sample of coal for use in making quantitative determinations of coal components with a microscope was developed about 10 years later by Thiessen and coworkers G. C. Sprunk and H. J. O'Donnell.2 Complete thin-section analyses subsequently have been made of 126 column samples of various ranks and types of American coals. The data and information were assembled from these thin-section studies and published in a large number of reports dealing chiefly with investigations of the coking and hydrogena-tion properties of certain American coals. In the years following adoption of Thies-sen's method, a considerable amount of work was done in collecting column samples of many coals, making routine thin-section analyses of these, interpreting the results, and finding practical application for the information in other fields of coal research. The many reports and papers covering the work in coal petrography, however, offer very little discussion that can be considered as critical appraisal of the technique. Criticism outside the Bureau most often has voiced questioning opinions concerning the accuracy of the method used of measuring coal components microscopically and classifying the coal into arbitrary types on the basis of the quantitative determinations. The principal purpose of this paper is to discuss in some detail and present data showing the results of certain investigative work done in the petrography laboratory on the accuracy of the Bureau's method of microscopic measurement of components in coal thin sections. Data from microscopic analyses on file made by G. C. Sprunk and H. J. O'Donnell were freely used in the investigation, and a table of columnar analyses from an unpublished manuscript by Sprunk is included in this paper for reference. In the course of the experimental work a method was developed for measuring in-strumentally with a planimeter the components shown in micrographs of selected thin sections. Measuring coal components with a planimeter furnished useful information for studying the accuracy of microscopically measuring the same components in thin sections. Foi estudada uma forma de reduzir o custo de produção de aços que atendem a norma NBR 6656 LNE 38 (ou LNE 380) na Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN). Esses materiais são utilizados em peças de conformabilidade crítica principalmente para indústria automotiva. Na CSN, o Forno Panela tradicionalmente faz parte da rota obrigatória de fabricação desses materiais constituindo um “gargalo” de produção. Efetuou-se uma análise da composição química, então empregada para os aços e das propriedades mecânicas resultantes, e então se buscou uma nova composição que atendesse a norma e que permitisse outra rota de produção. Percebeu-se que uma redução no teor de manganês em relação ao normalmente utilizado propiciava uma melhor adequação à norma, além de permitir o uso de uma rota alternativa que maximizava a produção e permitia reduzir custos.
