This article presents a series of guidelines by which the geologist can evaluate the likelihood of surface faulting and its probable extent at any given site in Southern California and Nevada. The information is intended primarily for geologists concerned with establishing design criteria for proposed nuclear plants. The geologic problems involved in the location of a nuclear power plant are fundamentally no different from those for other types of installations. They fall into four main categories: foundation stability, landslides and slope stability, shaking due to earthquakes, and surface faulting. For problems in the first three categories the foundation engineer, the geologist, and the seismologist can provide criteria for plant location and design, and these problems can generally be economically handled by appropriate design measures for a project of the magnitude of a nuclear plant. However, problems in the last category — surface faulting — are more difficult to handle and require a unique evaluation. Accordingly, this paper will deal primarily with the problem of establishing design criteria for surface faulting, particularly as it affects nuclear facilities. A nuclear reactor is a power source that for greater safety is contained in a heavy, air-tight structure, just as gas, oil, water, and other power sources must be contained. Surface faulting is significant in that it may reduce the integrity of the containment by affecting critical exterior piping or by breaching of the containment. A similar significance exists relative to dams or tanks for the storage of water, gas, or oil, except that in these latter examples the breaching of the container automatically releases the fluids to do their damage. This is not necessarily the case with the rupture of a reactor containment structure because the function of the containment is totally protective, i.e., it is necessary only in the event that radioactive products are released from the reactor, and there are many other safeguards to pre- vent this release even if the containment is ruptured. At the present time, nuclear power plants must be located near large sources of water for cooling the steam generated. The construction of an industrial facility of any kind on the coast line is esthetically distasteful to most people since, unfortunately, there is not enough coast to fulfill all the needs and all the desires of all the people. In most cases where industrial facilities encroach on the lives of citizens, there is no mechanism other than zoning laws by which a person can effectively protest. But in the case of a nuclear facility, the public hearing required by the Atomic Energy Commission provides a forum for dissent, as in recent case histories, and the question of safety provides objectors with a weapon for fighting the construction of the plant. The nature of a public hearing for a nuclear plant is such that the prospective owner and operator must prove that there is no undue hazard, whereas the objectors need only demonstrate that there is a reasonable doubt. It is in this situation that geology becomes the Achilles Heel of nuclear power plant location. For his investigation, the geologist has natural exposures of rock at the ground surface and a limited number of trenches and drill holes to give him a fairly complete picture of the distribution of the various rock types. From the surficial data, he must infer three more dimensions — depth below the surface, past time, and future time. Unlike many problems faced by engineers, the geologist has only this one set of data from which to reach a conclusion — he is unable to reproduce the natural sequence of events in order to obtain another set of data for comparison. Hence, by the very deductive nature of a geologic conclusion, it is difficult to prove a geologic conclusion beyond a reasonable doubt even to other geologists — and perhaps one should say especially to other geologists because the experience and background of a geologist will strongly influence his conclusion, and no two geologists have exactly the same experience and training. The engineer and the public official would like the geologist to conclude that faulting cannot occur at a given site or to assign a numerical value to the probability of its occurrence — but no responsible geologist can do either of these things. A knowledge of the magnitude of the irreducible inter.;titial water in a porous medium is so important to petroleum engineering that its determination has become routine in core analyses. The method of determination, being a production problem, should encompass the basic requirements of simplicity in technique and calculations, with reproducible results obtainable in a short interval of time. The results of the evaluation tests outlined in this report indicate that the evaporation method for determining the irreducible water is a technique which meets the requirements. The procedure consists, as the name implies. of permitting the saturant in the pore spaces to evaporate until only an irreducible volume remains. The determination of this volume can be made either graphically or by a mathematical comparison of fluid flows; the time required for each determination being dependent on the fluid used. When fluids other than those having reservoir characteristics were used, a volume factor had to be calculated which was based on the relative volume of various liquids adsorbed on grain surfaces and retained in pores. This factor made possible the calculation of an irreducible water volume when more volatile fluids such as toluene and benzene were used as the saturants. Also presented is the theoretical discussion necessary for the calculation of the capillary pressure as determined from the evaporation curve. A comparison is made between the calculated values and those obtained by experimental means. "Interstitial water" is the term given to this water and is defined as that water coexisting in the pore space with the oil prior to exploitation. The term ''connate water" has often been used synonymously with this term; however, this can be true only by a specific definition since, geologically, it means the water in place at the time the rock structure was formed. The quantity of the interstitial water is a variable factor in any formation, since it depends on the hydrostatic forces present in any multiple-phase system. These forces may become unbalanced by the introduction of an extraneous force such as the raising or lowering of the "water table" or the migration of oil into a water-filled formation. Any unbalanced force results in a change in the interstitial water. There exists, however, an irreducible interstitial water. for a particular sand, that is the fraction of the pore space occupied by water when the capillary pressure at the particular point in question is at an equilibrium with the hydrostatic head of the oil sand in the reservoir. For this discussion the term "irreducible water saturation" will be used in place of "irreducible interstitial water saturation" for the sake of brevity; however, they are understood to be identical. A great amount of work has been devoted to the theory and methods for studying the irreducible water saturation and its related capillary pressure. As a result of the publications of Leverett;' Hassler, Brunner and Deahl;2 Calhoun and Lewis;3 and others, the role of capillary pressure studies is being accepted by the industry as a tool for studying suhsurface phenomena. Many techniques have been developed and published for determining the capillary pressure and irreducible water. In general, these techniques may be grouped into three classifications. One of the first was the capillary pressure method described by Leverett1 and expanded by Bruce and Welge.4 The experimental results were compared with water saturation of cores obtained using oil-base mud. Thornton and Marshall compared the irreducible water saturation of core samples determined by the capillary pressure method and by salinity and reported good agreement between the two methods. The second classification for determining the irreducible water and capillary pressure may be referred to as the "centrifugal force method." The general technique is similar to the capillary pressure method except that the force driving the reservoir fluid from the sample is of a centrifugal nature. A complete description of this method was presented by J. J. . McCullough and F. W. Albaugh.6 A process, the reverse of the capillary pressure method, was presented by W. R. Purcell.7 Mercury under pressure is driven into the pores of the rock and the saturation of the core determined at each applied pressure. The resulting capillary pressure curve is used to evaluate the irreducible water saturation. The techniques mentioned are singular in their approach to the irreducible water saturation. In all cases. an external force was applied to the core. The forces employed in the evaporation method are the vapor pressure of the liquid causing evaporation, the kinetic diffusion forces. adsorptive forces and. to a lesser degree, the viscous forces resisting flow to the surface. The basic definition of irreducible water is that water held in a state of equilibrium between capillary and hydrostatic forces This water has been described by previous investigators as being held in the microcapillaries too small to support fluid flow. Actually, this fluid volume is made up of the water in the microcapillaries and as a film adhering to the surface of the crystals. All capillaries. therefore, possess some liquid as a film, the thickness of the film being dependent on the properties of the fluid and solid. A discussion of experiments with references pertaining to the measurement of this immobile layer next to the solid surface can be found in the text by J. J. Bikerman.8 Eversole and Lahr calculated the thickness of this layer to be in the order of 10 ' to 10' cm for aqueous solutions and glass. Between two quartz surfaces they found the thickness to be 2 x 10 cm. The work of Volkova, on the capillary movement of water and toluene in quartz grains, indicated the thickness of the Immobile layers to be near 10' cm. Since any measurement is an average value, it is easy to understand that an absolute value would depend on the roughness of the surfaces involved and the complexity of the system. A calculated effective pore radius of 2 x 10 cm is obtained at the, irreducible saturation of a porous media in a water-air system when a capillary pressure of 100 psi is applied. Since the separation of the sand grains is of the same approximate magnitude as the immobile layer.

Every person in an organisation has what could be called ‘a different take’ on what it means to be a safety leader. The directors will tell you they are ultimately responsible for everyone’s safety and that they can be imprisoned as a consequence of a workplace fatality. Managers, take more of a focused approach and would explain that they are totally responsible for the safety of their teams. And then there are front-line leaders. Those that not only have the responsibility (like directors and managers) but they also have the accountability, and the ability, to influence how safely their teams work. But it is not just physical safety that leaders should be concerned with.

"INTRODUCTIONJacked piles are piles that are pressed into the ground, usually by hydraulic jacks. For this reason, jacked piles are also known as pressed in piles. Jacked piles are mainly used for the following applications.• Underpinning worksJacked piles have been commonly used for strengthening the foundation of existing structures. In pressing the pile into the ground, the hydraulic jacks will jack against existing pile caps or ground beams that support the structure or against a steel frame connected to the floor slabs or structural walls of the structure. The self weight of the structure provides the reaction force for pile jacking. Jacked piles used for underpinning works usually have lower design ultimate capacities, typically less than 2000 kN (225 tons).• New foundationsJacked piles can be used to support new structures. A heavy pile jacking machine is employed to provide the reaction force for jacking the piles into the ground.• Retaining structuresJacked piles can be installed at close spacings to form a retaining wall. For relatively large and easily accessible sites, the piles can be installed using a conventional pile jacking machine. For sites that are smaller and are more difficult to access, a more compact patented equipment called the Silent-Piler developed by Giken Seisakusho Co. Ltd. in Japan can be used.Jacked piles have several distinct advantages. The vibration and noise induced during pile jacking are minimal. Jacked piles are 100 percent proof-tested to a load level equal to the maximum applied jacking force. The pile jacking machine can also be treated as mobile kentledge for static loading test. In this article, discussion will focus on jacked piles used for supporting new structures.HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENTThe People’s Republic of China (PRC) is perhaps one of the earliest countries in which jacked piles were used as new foundations. Jacked piles had been installed in the PRC since the 1960s. The capacities of jacked piling machines used in the country are usually in the range of 3000 to 6000kN (337 to 675 tons). High capacity jacking machines with a capacity of 9000 kN (1000 tons), presently used by the construction industry in Hong Kong, were also manufactured in the PRC. There are also plans to produce machines with a capacity exceeding 10000 kN (1125 tons). It was projected by Wang (1999) that jacked prestressed spun concrete piles would become one of the most popular pile types in the PRC in the 21st century."

"A flexible model involving perfect mixers, stagnant zones, plug flow, material bypassing and recycling zones has been developed for interpreting mixing phenomena in mineral processes. The mixing properties are described by the residence time distributions which can be subsequently interpreted by the flexible model. User-friendly computer programs (for 1MB-PC or compatible) have been developed for simulation and modelling of RTDs using the proposed model. Seven mineral processing case studies are discussed in terms of experimental procedure, model calibration results and application of the estimated mixing model to process modelling, diagnosis, and performance evaluation. IntroductionIn any mineral processing plant there are continuous-flow machines that transform or separate the ore components. Grinding mills, flotation cells, conditioning and leaching tanks are examples of such machines. The performances of these vessels or reactors are controlled by the rate at which the reaction proceeds and the time spent in the environment where the reaction occurs. This paper deals with the latter aspect of mineral processes operation.Since most of the reactions occurring in mineral processing units are time dependent, knowledge of the residence time of the material in process vessels is important for modelling and diagnosis purposes. Due to the random mixing phenomena involved in the process equipment, there is a distribution of the residence time of the ore particles and the fluid in the vessel. The probability density function E(t) that a micro-element of the material flowing through a processing unit stays a time t in the vessel, is the residence time distribution (RTD) of the corresponding component."

A better understanding of ore fragmentation and the textural features of ore is a key to the energy efficient extraction of targeted minerals from low-grade ore deposits. In this study, X-ray microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) is employed to study mineral liberation during the tensile failure and onset of fragmentation of a copper ore. Our results show that X-ray micro-CT could inform new studies of ore micromechanics and fragmentation at the laboratory scale and may offer new avenues to address current challenges in the design of efficient comminution processes. We present the results of experiments based on a high-pressure apparatus enabling micromechanical studies to be carried out in situ (inside a micro-CT scanner). This platform produces high-quality 3D images of the evolution of a sample of porphyry copper ore during an in situ fragmentation test. A sequence of tomographic images enables mapping in 3D of both the deformation of mineral phases and the fragmentation process. The fragmentation occurs quasistatically through multiple stages starting with an initial tensile fracture splitting the ore diametrically, followed by tensile-activated nucleation and growth of multiple fractures producing a complex fracture network. Coupling breakage with microstructural information enables quantitative determination of the impact of ore texture heterogeneity on fracture patterns and mineral liberation. This microstructural information can be compared to key measurements of the ore mechanical behaviour such as the global deformation energy, strain deformation field and the stress relaxation response. The latter allows one to identify interesting precursor signals of the tensile failure. The copper liberation, fragment size distribution and breakage patterns are statistically characterised and related to comminution mechanisms which are clearly identified in the sequence of tomographic images. The two dominant mechanisms are rock-rock friction/compression induced by fracture closing and compression-driven fragmentation at rock-crusher contact points.

Although few people know of it, Woodlark Island produced a relatively large quantity of gold in a short period at the turn of the century. Deaths of miners, enticement to richer fields elsewhere, and world wars have contributed to the abandonment of these gold fields to their present obscurity. In the mining boom, companies were formed, amalgamated and bought-out in a flurry of activity but present records are incomplete. The main sources of information are annual reports of the Department of Land Surveys and Mines in Papua, a few geologists' publications (notably Pinder,1901; Stanley, 1912, 1923; Trail,1967) and a variety of unpublished data. The first traces of gold in New Guinea were'found by Saavedra in 1528. The first gold in Papua was found near Port Moresby in 1878. The next discovery was at Sudest Island in 1888 followed by Misima Island in 1889 and Woodlark Island in 1894. By 1910 the "Murua Goldfield" (Woodlark Island) had contributed over 43% of the total gold yield of the Territory of Papua.

"TioMin Resources Inc. is evaluating the feasibility of exploiting the heavy mineral sands deposit at Natashquan on the north shore of the Gulf of St-Lawrence, Quebec. TioMin holds the exploration rights to 180 square kilometres, on which 1.6 billion tonnes of sands grading approximately 6% heavy minerals were outlined. The heavy minerals of value include magnetite, ilmenite/hematite, garnet, and zircon. An important part of this evaluation is the development and testing of a mineral separation flowsheet. Under a comprehensive mandate from TioMin, the Centre de recherches minerales (CRM) provided technical assistance to build and operate an on site primary concentrator pilot plant. This plant produced a 93 tonne concentrate, providing over 60 % heavy minerals. This concentrate was shipped to the CRM pilot plant in Quebec City. It was used for further flowsheet testing and for preparation of products and concentrates of heavy minerals with regard to marketing possibilities. This paper presents the flowsheet developed to produce these concentrates.IntroductionIn late 1992, an 11 tonne bulk sample of sand was collected from within the mineralized zone of the Natashquan deposit. This sample was processed over conventional spirals and wet tables at the pilot plant facilities of the Centre de recherches minerales (CRM) in Quebec City. A primary concentrate was produced, from which several 20 kg samples were forwarded to five research laboratories in North America and in Australia. Their tasks were to determine the mineralogical composition of this concentrate and the potential for recovery of marketable minerals from the heavy mineral sands. Satisfactory results obtained from this approach encouraged TioMin to proceed with a more detailed pilot plant program."

Mining in China dates back at least 4,000 years. Today, with no less than 103,000 metal/nonmetal mines and between 40,000 to 80,000 coal mines, China’s mining industry is undoubtedly the largest in the world. Despite improvements in recent decades, seemingly endless mining accidents continue to make the news. Official coal mining deaths were 6,702 in 2003, and 6,027 miners died in 2004; actual figures may be much higher. Added to these were the 2,699 deaths in the metal and nonmetal industries. Most of these accidents were due to CH4 (methane gas) explosions and fires as a result of inadequate mine ventilation de-sign or practices. A good portion of these accidents occur in small, privately run and often technically illegal mines. During the past 10 years, the Chinese government has attempted to crack down on small and often technically illegal mines without much success. The number of accidents and associated fatalities has not significantly reduced. However, there appears to be a new urgency in China’s efforts to step up mine safety in the country. After its worst reported mine disaster in more than a half century, the government quickly paid reparations to families, suspended high-level officials in charge and announced additonal reforms. One of those was the elevation of the central government’s work safety office to cabinet-level status. There has been increased transparency in reporting and investigation of mine accidents and disasters in recent years. There has also been an increase in public criticism by labor leaders concerning the neglect of mine workersafety.1 This article examines the causes of China’s many mining accidents, current legal and enforcement structures, respective mining health and safety related laws and regulations, recent mining industry developments and the latest effort to curtail small mining operations.

"Some twenty years ago, during construction of flotation in the “Veliki Krivelj” copper and non-metallic mine Bor, a computer supported system for remote controle of technological process was installed. Nowadays, the major part of equipment of this system is worn-out and technically old-fashioned. Having this in mind a decision was made to design a new computer supported information-management system for Flotation. The paper presents a concept and features of project solutions.For the requirements of remote monitoring and management of technological process in Flotation of “Veliki Krivelj”, Copper and non-metallic minerals mine in Bor, Yugoslavia (hereinafter: CNM Bor), a measuring-regulation equipment was implemented and a computer control system, adjusted for that time, built some twenty years ago. The major part of this equipment is today worn out and technically out of date.Having estimated that production and business activities could hardly be more efficient, operative and successful on one hand, and available mineral and other resources rationally exploited, the CNM Bor made a decision in 1999 to improve information-management function of Flotation. The idea was that the set task be realized through development and introduction into practice up-to-date integrated and computer-supported production-business information-management system. The first logic step in completion of this task refers to engineering-creative determination of information management system (hereinafter: IMS), namely to project elaboration.When considering the real system from technical, technological, organization, monitoring-management, logistic and business aspects, the Project on IMS of Flotation, should provide a rational, modern and, for the real system conditions, complete solution. The Project solutions should be based on the most recent knowledge from computer and measuring-regulation technics as well as from CIM concept (Computer Integrated Manufacturing)."

The Bureau of Mines and United States Steel Corp. are conducting a joint project to monitor formation pressures at a large (23-well) coal- bed gas drainage field near Oak Grove, AL. Three monitor holes were drilled in late 1981, and pressure monitoring began in December 1981. The Bureau of Mines direct method was used to obtain gas content data from cores taken in the monitor holes. Comparison of the 1981 gas con- tent data from the monitor holes with initial gas content values obtain- ed from the production wells in 1977 indicates a 50-pct reduction in ad- sorbed gas content inside the pattern and a 29-pct reduction at one point 500 ft outside the pattern. The combination of pressure and gas content data has also allowed an in situ isotherm curve, relating the formation pressure to adsorbed gas content, to be developed for the area of the production wells. From the current rate of pressure decline (1 lbf/inz per month), the observed changes in gas content, and the isotherm curve, it appears that most of the early gas production came from within the pattern, but since 1981 (and possibly earlier) most of the gas produced has been migrating to the wells from outside the pattern area.

This paper discusses the replacement of AEROFLOAT ® 1 25 promoter by AERO ® 5688 promoter at Sonora Mining Corp.'s California Mother Lode concentrator. Flotation concentrate is trucked 120 miles to a leach plant in Nevada, so the reduced mass resulting from higher gold grades and reduced talceous gangue and barren pyrite resulting from this change in promoters has brought about a major decrease in shipping costs. Preliminary laboratory testing indicated that free milling gold and controlled amounts of pyrite could be floated using Aero 5688 promoter with reduced dosages of Aero 350 xanthate.2 Extensive plant trials confirmed that the new reagent suite could indeed maintain gold recoveries while reducing total mass. Improved froth characteristics also improved operating flexibility in treating various ore types, and overall reagent costs have been reduced.

This phrase has always appealed to me, not only for its resonance but because it seems to place in some perspective man's place in the cosmos. As we go about our daily occupations and as we meet here tonight, we must agree that we have come a long way slowly at first through the ages of change but with a quickening pace that has brought to man's know-ledge and use, within the last hundred years, more ideas, more material advantages, more opportunities and more comforts than were ever imagined or dreamed of in those long corridors of time. Looking back to the dawn of his-tory, a mere five thousand years ago, there is one aspect of the birth and growth of civilization that has particular significance for the miner and the metallurgist.

The New Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a classic suspension bridge founded on concrete caissons. Caisson construction was complicated by the proximity of the existing bridge piers, only sixty feet away. High capacity plate anchors were used successfully to moor the new caissons in currents as strong as seven knots during construction.

The oil crisis had repercussions throughout the world and most importantly on mining, where the drive to reduce the use of liquid fossil fuel led directly to the appearance and subsequent growth in the design of mobile crushers in late 1970s early 1980s, which heralded a new era in both quarrying and mining. Even though mobile crushing has now become common, even preferred in the quarrying industry, this has not been the case in mining. This paper looks at why, in spite of the initial optimism, this technology has yet to gain full acceptance in the mining industry. The paper examines some of the problems that have been encountered in the past and offers suggestions as to how they can be avoided by applying the appropriate technology. It then takes a look at the successful application of the semi-mobile in-pit crushing system used by Italian Thai Development Company (ITD), on the Mae Moh Phase 5 contract and examines how the techniques used successfully there could be applied to the industry at large.

The 12th and 14th Street Viaducts, which carry Route 139, are located west of the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City, New Jersey. The two viaducts, provide access to and from the Holland Tunnel (which connects New York City and New Jersey) and carry upwards of 50,0000 vehicles per day from Jersey City and New York City to points west. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) selected AECOM to perform design services including rehabilitation and seismic retrofit for the 12th Street and 14th Street Viaducts while maintaining traffic at all times. Building a new parallel bridge just north of the 14th Street Viaduct was essential in avoiding extremely costly traffic delays. Installation of the new foundation, in close proximity to the existing viaduct, required drilling through some of the existing timber piles supporting the bridge. As a result, the existing bridge was required to be reanalyzed for this new foundation configuration. This proposed structure consisted of 8 piers each supported on a single six (6) foot diameter drilled shaft. Currently this portion of the bridge structure has been constructed. The shafts were constructed with rock sockets that were five feet six inches (5?- 6??) in diameter and were extended 11.2 feet (3.4 meters) into rock. A 2300 ton Osterberg Load Test was performed on one production shaft to confirm the capacity of the shaft. The rock socket for the test shaft was in sandstone. This paper will present a description of the design methodology and construction methods adopted for the foundations. In addition, the paper will illustrate the Osterberg Load Test including: equipment used, number and locations of strain gages, and interpretation of results. Additionally, regarding the close proximity of the new foundation, the paper will present the type of equipment used to drill through the existing timber pile foundation while minimizing the impact on the integrity of the existing foundation. We will also present the method of analysis for analyzing the redistribution of load on the remaining piles. The results presented in this paper will assist the design engineer by providing a comparison between the geotechnical design assumptions and the actual measurements obtained by field measurements for this rock formation.
