"Geochemical characterisation is done based upon the geology and metallurgical batch testing prior to commencement of the operation of the plant.  Tailings repository design is based upon geochemical assessment of the waste material, as well as the geomechanical issues associated with storing the waste. The resultant conceptual and detailed design is incorporated into the environmental impact statement (EIS), upon which mine approval is based. The entire environmental monitoring and harm mitigation program, which is usually a condition of the Mine Lease approval, is based upon the applicability of the original characterisation.Tacit to this process is that there is no change in the geochemistry of the tailings, i.e. no change in the implications for acid & metalliferous or saline/neutral mine drainage (AMD/SNMD) generation. But any changes in milling and processing can have a substantive impact on the geochemical behaviour of the tailings metallurgy, and potentially render an operation non-compliant within the conditions of the mine license.Environmental and statutory approval implications for continuous improvements of metallurgy need to be understood because unintended consequences could cost more than the benefits of the improvement, and in some cases cost more than all the profit made from the mine.  Examples uncovered during audit and consultant practice will be presented together with a process to ensure implications for adverse environmental harm and license conditions are fully considered.*This paper is only available for individual download. Geologically and commercially, the term diatomite is applied to the nearly pure sedimentarv accumulation of diatom frustules- the microscopic skeletons of unicellular aquatic algae belonging to the class of golden brown algae, bacillariophyceae. The sediments are fine-grained, siliceous, and consist primarily of amorphous opaline silica with only minor amounts of organic residue, secondary minerals, and co-deposited non-diatomaceous or crystalline clastic debris. In the geological sense, the name diatomite implies sedimentary accumulations that have reached appreciable thickness and when thick enough, such accumulations consequently may have possible commercial potential. Although the term diatomite is popularly and inappropriately applied to any sediment in which there is an abundance of diatom frustules, alternative terminology is more correctly employed to describe the less pure diatomaceous sediments, for example: clay-bearing diatomite or diatom-bearing clay. Synonyms in current usage include diatomaceous earth and kieselghur. More antiquated and obsolete terminology includes tripoli-powder, tripolite, and infusorial earth. Worldwide, diatomites occur within Tertiary to Recent lacus- trine and marine sedimentary facies. Although diatomite is wide- spread throughout the world, deposits that contain high purity, commercially versatile ore are uncommon. Physical properties of the diatom and of processed diatomite that provide unique commercial value in a broad spectrum of market end-uses include ornate fine structure, low bulk density, and high porosity and surface area. Properties of equal importance are mild abrasiveness, high absorptive capacity, insulating ability, relative inertness, and high brightness. End-use markets are diverse and range from insulating brick and absorbents through quality sensitive filter aids and premium quality functional fillers. Notwithstanding both the economic attractiveness of the specialty markets and the commercial versatility of the high purity deposits, deposits of lesser purity are mined in nearly all parts of the world for less demanding uses. Mining costs are minimized through open pit quarrying, but in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America underground mining methods are also employed. Blasting is not required because diatomite is soft and easily broken loose with mechanized equipment. Following gentle crushing, the ore is dried, milled, and processed into one of three broad categories of products: naturally milled, straight calcined, and flux calcined grades. Each of these principal categories is further subdivided into additional grades through particle size adjustment of the powders. Agglomeration of particles, alteration of fine structure, and color change are achieved through calcination. Flux calcination further accentuates these changes. Production throughout the world is dominated by the United States, followed by Romania, the former Soviet republics, and France. Other major producers include Spain, Mexico, Iceland, Korea, Japan, and Germany. Denmark is a major producer of Moler earth products, which consist of a diatomite-clay mixture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first industrial use of diatomite can be traced back some 2000 years to the Greeks and to the use of diatomaceous earth as a component in lightweight building brick and in ceramic pottery. It was not until the mid-1800s, however, that the unique properties of diatomite were first recognized and the market end-uses explored and developed. One of the most important of the early uses followed the development of dynamite by Alfred Nobel in the mid-1860s, whereupon diatomite was used as a component of the explosive to improve stability and safety. Other early uses included low temperature insulating and refractory bricks and as a component in insulating and fireproofing construction panels. During the 1920s, processing technology underwent a very rapid evolution with the development of calcination, flux calcination, and air classification technologies. Through these technologies, innumerable different size and grade classifications could be made for market applications and for rapidly diversified end- uses. Today, the application of processed diatomite for filter aid is the largest of the quality sensitive end-uses. Specific filtration uses include the clarification of beer, wine and liquor, vegetable oil, syrup and sugar, pharmaceuticals, and swimming pool water, to name a few. As a functional filler and extender, processed diatomite is ideally suited for application in paint, rubber, and plastic formulations. Other filler applications include use as an anti-blocking agent in plastic film, anti-caking agent for fertilizer, thermal insulating material, catalyst carrier, polish, abrasive, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, and chromatographic supports. Throughout much of the world diatomite is still used as a component of insulating brick and as an absorbent.

The Misima and Porger, Mines, along with the Kutubu oil project, have essentially rescues PNG's economic viability since the loss of income from Panguna Though the industry cannot create employment in the manner o. intensive industries such as agriculture, it does provid( opportunities to local communities in terms of jobs, financia compensation, and infrastructure. Many ventures take many years and enormous capital investment to set up. There are three phases: exploration, feasibility, an( operations. The operations phase sees a massive development o infrastructure, or the actual `building' of the mine. For mining companies to commit to such lengthy time frames and high level: of investment, without returns, requires confidence and a degree of commitment from government on a number of levels - legislative stability, monitoring social development, and the provision o social infrastructure.

An industrial survey was made for the Missouri Basin Field Committee of the Department of the Interior to determine the type and quantity of water-borne mineral wastes and the water requirements of metal-processing industries in the basin in Kansas and western Missouri. Data are presented on metal-processing plants visited through June 30, 1959. Most of the plants were in the greater Kansas City area. This report is to be supplemented with a similar publication on other industries, including those producing sand and gravel, coal, petroleum, and chemicals. In 1958, 19 million pounds of waste materials was discharged from metal processing industries. Approximately 14 million pounds of this waste was in the form of ferrous sulfate, and 2 million pounds was ferric phosphate. Galvanizing, other hot dipping, and automotive industries contributed the greater part of iron compounds wasted; some of this waste occurred as sludge that was not discharged to water courses but was hauled to refuse dumps, podium was present in nearly all industrial wastes, and the total of more than 900,000 pounds constituted one of the larger material losses. Although small in quantity, electroplating and allied coating wastes contained metals that were expensive when originally purchased.

Results of a field research project on the thermal recovery of oil by movement of a combustion front are presented. This field test was conducted in the South Belridge field, This The war paitern was a Southsing1e 2.5-acre five-spot pattern in the 700-ft deep Tulare sand. Results of this project indicate the technical feasibility of producing high viscosity, low-grallity crude oils by thermal means. It was demonstrated that heavy oils could be moved rapidly over considerable distances by thermal drive, and that high percentage recoveries of oil could be effected. The bulk of the oil recovery came after arrival of the burning front at a production well. However, rapid corrosion and high-temperature failure of conventional pipe and equipment both below and above surface occurred. Stainless steels gave more satisfectory performance under these conditions than did conventional steels. Oxygen was seldom observed in gas from wells ahead of the burning front, and it appears that the front was continuous throughout the life of the experiment. INTRODUCTION During late 1953 and early 1954, industry-wide attention was focused on the thermal recovery of oil by movement of a combustion front through an oil zone. Two separate Oklahoma field tests were described in publications by Kuhn and Koch, and Grant and Szasz. To obtain basic information needed for making engineering and economic appraisals of commercial recovery of heavy oil by this thermal recovery method, a new field research projecta3,4 was started May 31, 1955. Twelve oil companies contributed to this project with General Petroleum Corp. as operator. Since combustion recovery experiments* with heavy oils in other areas had been conducted in small patterns,"' an important purpose of this test was to determine whether the process could be operated in a pattern of near-commercial well spacing. The south Belridge field, located 30 miles north of Taft, Calif., was chosen because its oil sands are similar to many heavy oil sands which typically have low primary recovery and leave a large amount of oil in place. such fields are not particularly suited for common secondary recovery methods. DESCRIPTION OF TEST SITE The test interval was a Tulare sand at a depth of about 700 ft. Nine test wells were drilled, cored and completed from Oct., 1955, through Jan., 1956. The initial pattern shown on the map, Fig. 1, consisted of an injection well (II)', four producing wells (1P-4P), and four observation wells (IT-4T). An old well (81) was also recompleted for use as an observation well. The area enclosed by the original four production wells was 2.5 acres; the distance from the injection well to each production well was 233 ft. During the combustion period, Well 5P was drilled to replace Well 2P, and Well 6P was drilled to replace Well 3P. The new wells were 25 ft beyond the old production wells along a diagonal from the injection well, and resulted in an increase in pattern area to 2.75 acres. Isopachs are shown in Fig. 1. The average thickness of the oil sand in the test pattern was 30 ft. Fig. 2 presents two cross sections through the test pattern. Oil sand is represented by white and claystone by gray. The dashed lines indicate layers of conglomerate grading to claystone. The sand thickness was fairly uniform throughout the test pattern except in the 1P area. The sand body dips gently from the northwest to southeast, about 3 degrees from horizontal. The sand is unconsoli-dated, and grades from very fine material to pebbles as large as 2 in. in diameter. Table 1 presents the average initial properties of the formation. The in-place porosity of 37 per cent was estimated from the porosity of coke-consolidated cores taken after combustion. Analyze variably saturated flow in mining and other environmentally sensitive settings through the use of personal computer (PC) based software. The Problem There is an increasing need for mining companies to quantify water contaminants and their migration in the unsaturated zone. New and innovative computer models are therefore necessary to more accurately assess the potential impact of mining activities on groundwater resources and the environment. Applications for unsaturated flow modeling include (1) assessment of the impact of surface or underground extraction mining on flow conditions; (2) assessment of various hydrologic designs for resource recovery, such as in heap leaching or in situ leach mining; (3) assessment of the transport of conservative nonrcactive constituents in response to migration from spoil piles, or acid mine drainage; and (4) assessment of any combination of the above to facilitate expeditious permitting for mining operations. Since the mid 1970's there has been a proliferation of mathematical models and procedures for solving unsaturated now problems; however, few of these approaches have been integrated into software for public use. Commercially available unsaturated flow software models typically are limited to a single application and have restricted approaches. For example, computer codes that solve the unsaturated flow problem based on an analytic expression arc restricted to a simple geometric shape, homogeneous and isotropic materials, and provide only information regarding pressure and flow conditions in specified wells. The variably saturated computer codes that take advantage of the finite difference or finite element approach arc often restricted to either steady state or transient solutions; utilize one specific moisture-retention relationship and moisture-dependent permeability function; do not account for hysteresis; and are used with specific hardware such as a mainframe or work station. This restricts their use because they arc hard to interface, and arc often poorly documented, support dependent, and expensive. The mining community needs a flexible, more broadly based, variably saturated fluid flow simulator for the PC-platform to more accurately predict fluid movement in the mining environment.

The term "diatomite" implies the nearly pure sedimentary accumulation of diatoms. Sedimentary and chemical purity, low density, inertness, intricate fine structure, high brightness and other properties give the diatom and diatomite unique industrial usefulness and commercial value in high value functional filler and specialty filter aid products. Although diatomite deposits occur commonly throughout the world in Miocene and younger marine and lacustrine sediments, deposits that contain significant reserves of crude suitable for these quality sensitive markets are uncommon. U.S. production is centered on exceptional deposits located in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and California. Evaluation of deposits requires understanding of geology, mining, production and end use. As crude quality in deposits varies within and between strata, ore suitable for quality sensitive end uses must be identified through sampling and evaluation programs tailored to permit recognition of critical variations.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. A quantificação detalhada, atualizada e mais precisa do balanço hídrico da empresa favoreceu uma série de ganhos operacionais, possibilitando uma comparação mais assertiva com outras empresas do ramo siderúrgico, além de alavancar diversos indicadores ambientais da CSN.

New deposits are often characterized as low-grade and complex ore bodies. To date, processing of fine grained ore deposits implies complex processing routes with high energy consumption. For that reason, the investigation of dry grinding, e.g. with vertical roller mills (VRM), is an approach to save energy reserves. It is already proven that dry grinding can influence subsequent processing steps. In terms of flotation, the surface characteristics of the minerals are crucial for a successful flotation process, e.g. the sufficient adhesion of mineral particles and air bubbles. Wet grinding results in different surface properties of the product entering the conditioning stage than dry grinding, which has direct influences on the subsequent flotation process. To investigate the consequences for flotation, processing of a copper sulfide ore containing chalcopyrite and bornite was investigated, including grinding and rougher flotation. The effects of wet tumbling mill and dry VRM grinding on the degree of liberation of valuable minerals are characterized using mineral liberation analysis by scanning electron microscopy. The obtained flotation results, as well as the recorded flotation parameters such as dissolved oxygen, oxidation reduction potential and conductivity are presented and discussed. INTRODUCTION Copper production is mainly connected to porphyry copper deposits as main source for copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite and bornite. State-of-the-art processing of these deposits is already established worldwide for decades, combining crushing, fine grinding and subsequent flotation with rougher, cleaner and scavenger stages (del Villar, Desbiens, & Maldonado, Bouchard, 2010). While the demand for copper is increasing, copper grades of the deposits are decreasing and the remaining ore bodies have more complex mineralogy and finer particle size distribution. This implies processing routes with high water and – due to the liberation of fine grained valuable minerals – high energy consumption by fine grinding. One of the main energy consumers in processing plants is the grinding section, which accounts for more than 50% of the energy consumption in processing plants and even 4% of the worldwide energy consumption (Jeswiet, & Szekeres, 2016). Therefore, dry fine grinding alternatives are applied to enhance the overall energy consumption of mineral processing plants: high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and vertical roller mills (VRM).

All of our accounts say that the discovery of copper ore at Duck-town, Tenn., was made in August, 1843, yet it would appear that samples of copper from this district were found by DeSoto, when he wandered into southern Tennessee, in 1539, in his four years of exploration through the Southern States. The following quotation is taken from his diary: "Towards the north there was a province named Chisca; and that there was a melting of copper, and of another metall of the same colour, save that it was finer, and of a farre more perfect colour, and farre better to the sight, and that they used it not so much, because it was softer. And the selfe same thing was told the governor in Cutifa-Chiqui, where we saw some little hatchets of copper, which were said to have a mixture of gold. But in that part of the country it was not well peopled; and they said there were mountains, which the horses could not passe; and for that cause, the governor would not goe from Cutifa-Chiqui directly quicker." DeSoto sent two of his company to try to find these mines, but after five days' wandering through the mountains they returned, stating that their guides had become lost. Although the Ducktown area may have been known to the ancient Indians, the copper deposits were actually discovered in August, 1843, when a Mr. Lemmons, while panning for gold on Potato Creek, in the Ducktown basin, found some reddish-brown decomposed rock. His disgust on finding that this yellow metal was not gold was so great that he did not try to develop his find. In March, 1847, B. C. Dugger erected an iron forge at this same place, but was unable to work the iron as it contained so much copper that on cooling it would break to pieces. The finding of copper in the iron ore by Mr. Dugger led to further explorations; and in April, of the same year, A. J. Weaver, who was passing through that country, told the people that the black rocks they had dug out were rich copper ore. Mr. Weaver began the

SIZING is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. This mining procedure left the fines in the mine. Preparation outside the mine started with the installation of stationary cast-iron plates with 4 to 6-in. square holes. The run-of-mine coal was dumped upon the platforms, the large pieces of rock were picked out by hand, and the large lumps of coal were broken with hammers. The term "breaker," which still applies to the anthracite-preparation plant, originated with this practice, but the term is no longer descriptive of the entire function of the plant. In 1884, the first power-operated anthracite coal breaker was erected by Gideon Bart at his colliery at Wolf Creek near Minersville, Pa. This plant utilized a system of rolls for breaking the coal and revolving screens for sizing. The plant was driven by a steam engine. It could handle coal at the rate of 200 tons a day. By 1860, revolving screens were in wide use in the Pennsylvania anthracite field. Shaking screens were introduced in the Pennsylvania anthracite region in the 90's and they rapidly displaced the lower-capacity revolving screens.

A utilização de carvão vegetal em substituição a outros materiais de origem fóssil na produção de coque é uma das alternativas para mitigar as emissões de CO2 na siderurgia. Contudo, a inserção de carvão vegetal na coqueificação apresenta fortes limitações, as quais estão principalmente associadas à sua elevada reatividade ao CO2. Assim, o presente estudo visou investigar alternativas para diminuir a reatividade do carvão vegetal. Para isso foram investigados os efeitos da temperatura de pirólise, desmineralização e impregnação por alcatrão. Os resultados mostraram que o aumento da temperatura de pirólise diminui a reatividade do carvão vegetal. Essa mesma tendência foi também observada ao se remover os componentes inorgânicos do carvão vegetal e ao se impregnar a sua estrutura com alcatrão. A associação dos tratamentos térmico, de desmineralização e impregnação com alcatrão resultou em reduções de reatividade na ordem de até 6 vezes a do material inicial.

Powers (Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh)—Several of the processing methods at the Josephtown smelter might well be considered by plants producing iron blast furnace sinter. In making blast furnace sinter the objectives are much the same as at Josephtown: To produce a strong yet porous agglomerate which has a size consist in a preferred range. The emphasis however is on production rate rather than on the size or other quality characteristics of the sinter. Therefore the technique is entirely different. Blast furnace sinter plants attempt to make their product in one pass with a minimum recirculating load and without sizing treatment after the sinter leaves the machines. Many plants are beginning to feel that more attention paid to quality characteristics would make the product a more desirable blast furnace material. The pelletizing of very fine material before placing it on the bed is not deliberately done at iron sinter plants, although the installed equipment sometimes gives a simila; action. Such pelletizing seems to be a promising way of accommodating the down-draft sintering Drocess to very fine materials. he recirculating load at Josephtown is extremely high. Two plants' producing blast furnace sinter from raw material of comparable size have a recirculating load of about 100 pct of production. At Josephtown it is notable that the size and the rate of feeding of return fines are under control. This is not the case in most blast furnace sinter plants. The sinter slicer appears to be a worthwhile aid in effecting such control. It is similar in action to rakes and plows used at a number of plants, but it has the advantage that the sinter dislodged is positively removed and not left to the inefficient action of a stationary grizzly screen. Blast furnace size specifications for sinter are not at present so rigid as the Josephtown specifications. If the sizing of blast furnace sinter does become important, then the Josephtown crushing practice, in which a large recirculating load is maintained on the crusher in order that minimum fines be produced, may be of interest. H. K. Najarian (authors' reply)—We note that Mr. Powers appreciates some points that we tried to emphasize in our paper as being of importance in making zinc sinter of good quality and which may well be applied to iron blast furnace sinter. Fig. 2 shows the pelletized nature of the feed going on to a Dwight-Lloyd type sintering machine in our plant. Practically, the entire feed consists of more or less rounded particles which permit more uniform air passage through the charge, while the larger particles in the charge roll on to the surface of the grate, which helps to keep the grate openings from being clogged by excessive fines. An agglomerated charge of this character may preferably be made by rolling action while being mixed in a rotating drum and wetted by water sprays to bind the fine particles together and give the charge the desired moisture content. From our observations of several iron ore and blast furnace flue dust sintering operations, we believe that if the fines from the sinter discharged from the machines were to be recirculated and agqlomerated with the new feed, not only sinter of better quality but larger capacity from the machines may be realized.

It is similar in action to rakes and plows used at a number of plants, but it has the advantage that the sinter dislodged is positively removed and not left to the inefficient action of a stationary grizzly screen. Blast furnace size specifications for sinter are not at present so rigid as the Josephtown specifications. If the sizing of blast furnace sinter does become important, then the Josephtown crushing practice, in which a large recirculating load is maintained on the crusher in order that minimum fines be produced, may be of interest. H. K. Najarian (authors' reply)—We note that Mr. Powers appreciates some points that we tried to emphasize in our paper as being of importance in making zinc sinter of good quality and which may well be applied to iron blast furnace sinter. Fig. 2 shows the pelletized nature of the feed going on to a Dwight-Lloyd type sintering machine in our plant. Practically, the entire feed consists of more ,or less rounded particles which permit more uniform air passage through the charge, while the larger particles in the charge roll on to the surface of the grate, which helps to keep the grate openings from being clogged by excessive fines. An agglomerated charge of this character may preferably be made by rolling action while being mixed in a rotating drum and wetted by water sprays to bind the fine particles together and give the charge the desired moisture content. From our observations of several iron ore and blast furnace flue dust sintering operations, we believe that if the fines from the sinter discharged from the machines were to be recirculated and agqlomerated with the new feed, not only sinter of better quality but larger capacity from the machines may be realized.

IT is generally accepted that no method of coal cleaning except froth flotation is effective in cleaning dust. In the majority of coals mined in the United States the dust sues contain a high percentage of impurities, hence the removal of the dust from the coarse sizes lowers the impurity content of these sizes. Dedusted coal is desired as a means of providing a better feed to cleaning plants because of increased efficiency in I both dry and wet plants. In dry-cleaning plants, a dedusted feed makes for a pervious and uniform bed. With a dusty feed the fines tend to segregate in the feed stream and pass en masse over the air separators, causing a lack of uniform aeration and fluidity of the bed necessary to efficient cleaning. In wet-cleaning plants dedusting of the feed often decreases the sludge problem to the point of eliminating the necessity of wasting wash water. It may be advantageous to eliminate sludge-settling equipment in favor of dedusting equipment, to provide the advantages of a dedusted feed to the wet-washing process. Dedusting advantages may include: (1) the removal of fusain, especially advantageous in plants washing coal intended for metallurgical coke; (2) prevention of the gradual build-up of solids in the wash water, with a consequent variation in the washing ability of the system; (3) prevention of the loss of dust to the sludge ponds, providing instead a fuel for local consumption or special markets. DEDUSTING The practice of dedusting, sometimes called aspirating, has presented a problem in disposing of the dust and intermediate small sizes recovered in the process. It has been found that no difficulty is experienced in disposing of the intermediate sizes, since they are free of fine dust and burn freely on grates built for small coal. They handle well, flowing freely from bins and hoppers and into conveyors, and pulverize easily. They have a low angle of repose. In tests made on this size as a feed to coke ovens, the results have been excellent, in that the natural breakdown of coal in handling and shooting in the mine gives this small-size coal good coking characteristics-producing a strong, fingery coke structure. IN all the meetings of the Petroleum Division, emphasis was placed on the essential importance, in the successful furtherance of our war effort, of efficiently producing, transporting, refining, and utilizing maximum quantities of crude oil and natural gas with the minimum expenditure of critical material. With representatives present from all branches of the petroleum industry, from all parts of the United States, the sessions were opened Tuesday morning with Commander Harry P. Stolz. U.S.N.R., Chairman of the Division, and A L. Haider as associate chairmen. From that time until the symposium on petroleum economics was closed Thursday afternoon papers of exceptional interest and importance were presented and discussed in a most frank and open manner.

Borehole televiewers are downhole inspection devices available for high-resolution imaging of a borehole wall following rock coring. Borehole televiewers should be considered by geotechnical engineers and geologists as a supplemental way of investigating rock for deep foundations. The optical televiewer (OTV) produces a digital optical image and the acoustic televiewer (ATV) utilizes reflected acoustic waves to produce images of the borehole walls. These devices can be utilized to examine soft or fractured zones in the rock mass, solution features, open joints or other voids not observable from traditional rock coring techniques. These devices along with computer post-processing can determine the strike and dip of joints, bedding planes, shear surfaces, or other structural features, eliminating the need for expensive oriented cores or manned downhole logging. An acoustic televiewer was utilized in the Fall of 2008 during the investigation phase for the I-70 New Mississippi River Bridge (I-70 MRB) in St. Louis, Missouri. Voids and fractures in the upper portion of the rock were described by prior consultants. Further investigation of these features was necessary to evaluate deep foundation options to support the main towers. Ten borings were drilled from a barge in the river at the two main tower pier locations. An ATV was utilized in each of the ten borings to produce images of the rock mass in the borehole and allow further investigation of the voids. Voids interpreted as solution features were readily identified in the ATV logs in multiple borings and at similar elevations, suggesting connectivity. Measurements of the voids? width, location in the borehole and orientation allowed a more thorough understanding of the potential impact the solution features may have on the planned deep foundations. An extensive grouting program was eliminated based on the ATV results.
