A preliminary investigation has recently been made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to determine whether or not the ordinary mine- type telephone is entirely safe in gaseous atmospheres . Two well known makes of mine- type phones were purchased for this investigation . It is not conceivable that the current necessary for talking over telephones could ignite gas . However , such phones are provided with efficient magnetos , and it was believed that danger might result from the ringing of the magneto . Again , while this type of phone has been designed to have a certain measure of dust and moisture tightness , evidently it has not been designed as an explosion- proof device . either with regard to cover joints and fastenings or strength of castings . Therefore , the problem was simplified . First it was assumed that owing to the construction of the telephones the gas would penetrate into their interior , and the question was to ascertain whether or not the gas would be ignited from the operation of the magneto .

The change in electrical resistance and Rockwell hardness (16-100-B) of copper alloys containing Ni2Si and Co2Si was determined by annealing the quenched solid solutions at various temperatures for various lengths of time. The rate of precipitation of Nisi, as measured by the rate of decrease of electrical resistance and increase of hardness, increased with annealing temperature up to a certain point, depending on the percentage of Ni2Si present. At these temperatures discontinuities in the rate: change occurred. (written discussion).—The electrical conductivity and hardness curves reported in this paper are interesting, particularly because many of the anomalies of the precipitation processes are evident from such curves. The title of the paper, however, is deceptive, for it implies that measurements of electrical conductivity and hardness are suitable to determine the rate of precipitation. Neither of these methods is suitable for a quantitative measurement of rates of reaction or of precipitation in the solid state. Electrical conductivity in some alloys shows an anomalous increase during the first stages of aging at low temperatures; it is notably sensitive to strain and to state of subdivision. I have plotted the conductivity curve representing the decomposition of the phase at 555" C. in the copper-aluminum system, given in the paper by Smith and Lindlief (Fig. 47, p. 93) as a rate of reaction curve, and compared it with the curve determined by area evaluation (Fig. 7); these two curves are not coincident. Hardness is likewise very uncertain, for it is so much dependent upon particle size. TRANSIENT potentials obtained in resistivity prospecting can be separated into two classes. The first is electromagnetic, has a comparatively short time constant, and increases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. These electromagnetic transient potentials, of which an excellent theoretical treatment is given by Yost,1 are the result of changes in the current and can be classed as differentiated signals. The second class is electrochemical, has a comparatively long time constant, and decreases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. The electrochemical signals are generated by the current flow itself and can be classed as integrated signals. The transient potentials due to electrochemical factors are the subject of this article. The phenomenon is referred to as induced polarization. Schlumberger2 was the first worker to observe induced polarization, but he was unsuccessful in attempts to apply the principles of induced polarization in electrochemical prospecting. Other workers, notably Bleil3 have studied polarization and in some cases pointed out its possibilities, but no theory has been presented that describes polarization and its time dependence adequately. It is the purpose of this discussion to present the essence of a theory to geo- physicists and to show that it leads to results consistent with experimental evidence. The theory on which this analysis is based has existed in electro- chemical circles since 1910.4

THE purpose of ore dressing is to separate the rough ore into one or several valuable concentrates and a discarded tailing. The first step is to crush the ore so that the resulting particles may be individually valuable or worthless. The next step generally has to be a sizing operation, because the property by which concentration is effected depends on the size of the in-dividual mineral particles as well as on their physical properties. These two effects may cancel each other if a preliminary sizing is not resorted to. Sizing is accomplished by screening or classifying. Screening depends almost solely on the dimensions of the particles; classifying depends also on the specific gravity of the particles and the viscosity of the settling medium in which the classifying operation is conducted. Classification, therefore, is to a certain extent a con-centrating operation as well as a sizing operation. Before the days of concentration by flotation, the available screens were mechanically poor. As a result classification was employed for sizing in the range. of comparatively coarse sands (table feeds). In recent years, the advent of stage-grinding to flotation size has brought about the development of good screens, which are more economical than classifiers down to about 20, -mesh. With decreasing size at which separation is to be made, screens become increasingly uneconomical, while classifiers become increasingly economical. The line of demarcation between the respective fields of screening .and classification is, therefore, fairly sharp. With the development of processes of concentrating finely comminuted ore, the need for classifiers or other sizing devices operating so as to make efficiently a split at a very fine size has become increasingly apparent. Such classifiers might be termed de-slimers, from the fact that they separate a material having a slimy ap-pearance from one having the characteristics of a sand. Sizing-tests are carried on by means of testing sieves, the finest of which have apertures of about 1/500 of an inch. The 200-mesh sieve, which has an average open-ing of 0.0029 linear inches is generally considered the limit of practical test-sizing. As a result, little is known of minus 200-mesh material and the advantages of classifying concentrator feeds within the minus 200-mesh range has been overlooked. An extension of the -present sieve scale beyond the 200-mesh screen is given in Table 1.

"Deep mixing (DM) method has been increasingly employed as a countermeasure against subsoil liquefaction in recent years. Pile-type DM, however, is considered to have little effect as a liquefaction countermeasure, because the shear deformation of unimproved soil around the piles cannot be reduced. However, experimental results, which imply that shear deformation of unimproved soil around DM piles can be reduced, were reported. Furthermore, a new plane-arrangement of DM piles has been proposed to mitigate lateral flow induced by liquefaction. The DM piles in this arrangement confront the lateral flow in any direction, compared with the piles arranged in conventional pattern such as square and triangular arrangements. In this study, a series of dynamic centrifuge model tests was conducted to verify the lateral flow resistance of DM plies in the new arrangement. The results indicate that the DM plies can reduce the lateral flow of liquefied ground when the pile displacement and the pile head rotation are restricted. In addition, lateral load acting on DM pile from liquefied ground, which is required for design strength of the DM pile, was investigated.INTRODUCTIONDeep mixing (DM) method has been increasingly employed as a countermeasure against subsoil liquefaction in recent years. The solidified body formed by the deep mixing method is usually block or lattice shape, composed of solidified columns that overlap each other horizontally. Lattice-type solidification has been shown to be effective as a liquefaction countermeasure despite the presence of unimproved soil inside the lattice wall, because the shear deformation of the interior soil is restrained by the wall (Suzuki et al., 1989). On the other hand, it has been thought that pile-type DM cannot reduce shear deformation of unimproved soil around the piles, because the displacement of the pile is less restricted than that of the lattice wall. DM piles have been reported to have little effect as a liquefaction countermeasure, but to be superior in terms of construction cost and applicability around existing underground structures (Koga et al., 1986). However, there are experimental results implying that DM piles have reduced the shear deformation of unimproved soil and mitigated its liquefaction (Yasuda et al., 2003; Tanaka et al., 2003). Yamamoto et al. (2006) conducted dynamic analyses of ground improved with lattice- and pile-type DM. Their results showed that pile-type DM with an improvement ratio of more than 35% reduces excess pore water pressure generated by earthquakes. Furthermore, the new pile arrangement shown in Fig. 1(a) has been proposed to mitigate lateral flow induced by liquefaction. It was developed and has been verified using dynamic model testing in a 1 g field (Takahashi et al., 2010a; 2010b; 2013; Towhata et al., 2010, Morikawa et al., 2014). The DM piles in this configuration interrupt lateral flow in any direction, unlike those placed in square and triangular arrangements."

"Bull Mountains No. 1 mine of Signal Peak Energy made another success in its 4 Right pre-developed recovery entry on March 23 and 24, 2015, after the first successful cut-through and shield retrieval of 3 Right pre-developed longwall recovery entry in 2014[1]. Under the same geological conditions, the major difference of 4 Right and 3 Right is the 600 psi Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) value of light-weight concrete in 4 Right versus 800 psi in 3 Right. In addition, one more recovery chute was added in 4 Right. The unique geological conditions in this mine include: (1) the low overburden of approximately 200-260 ft, (2) prevalence of roof joints parallel to the face in the sandstone/siltstone dominated overburden, (3) proximity of the Rehder rider seam to the bench Mammoth coal seam, and (4) prompt surface subsidence with the face advancement. The 4 Right recovery entry was 42 ft wide and developed in two stages, 20 ft wide in the inby Phase I, and 22 ft wide in the outby Phase II. The entry roof was reinforced with steel wire mesh/non-metallic recovery mesh, primary bolts, and high-capacity supplemental SUMO cables. After all the support was installed, the entry was completely backfilled with specially designed, cuttable, low-density cement. It took approximately half time to easily cut through the concrete with less dust in 4 Right as compared to the concrete-cut-through time in the 3 Right. The updated study further explored the nature and mechanism of effective roof control approaches in the pre-developed recovery entry of this unique geology mine, aiming at providing the safest working environment for protecting the miners. GEOLOGICAL AND MINING CONDITIONS OF THE RECOVERY ENTRIES Bull Mountains No. 1 mine is located 30 miles north of Billings, Montana, and currently mines bituminous coal from the Mammoth coal seam. The mine employed a conventional recovery face in Panel #1 and pre-developed recovery entries in Panels #2, #3, and #4 (Figure 1). The typical mining and geological conditions are as follows:Overburden Depth The overburden above the Mammoth coal seam in the #1-#4 Right recovery areas is approximately 200-260 ft. This low cover, in combination with specific roof geological features (especially the prevalent roof joints and proximity of rider seam), constitute unique ground movement characteristics when the longwall face advances into the recovery entry if no sufficient roof support is installed."

Built in 1806, Boston's African Meeting House is the oldest surviving Black church building in the country. A $7 million dollar renovation was begun in 2006 to restore this historic building to its 1855 appearance and to modernize the building's accessibility, electrical and mechanical systems. As part of the restoration, an underground utility room and elevator tower, needed to provide handicap access to the Meeting House, were constructed. Extending up to 17 feet below the foundations of the abutting buildings, the utility room was constructed within one foot of some of Boston's oldest and most expensive residences. All equipment and materials had to enter the work area through a narrow alley rendering conventional methods of excavation and construction of earth support using heavy equipment unfeasible. A unique combination of micropiles, structural cap beam, internal struts and shotcrete facing was designed and constructed to provide the permanent and temporary support of the lateral loads from the earth pressures and adjacent building surcharges and the vertical loads from the elevator tower. The narrow and congested streets of the Beacon Hill neighborhood presented many day-to-day challenges for the contractor.

The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the clean-up procedure adopted at the treatment plant of Paringa Mining & Exploration Co. Ltd. at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.A clean-up is carried out at the end of each four-weekly period, and all figures subsequently quoted are taken from a summary of the results of the eight periods ending 8th April, 1941.STRAKING AND AMALGAMATIONOf the total gold won 22· 77 per cent. is recovered by straking and amalgamation.The discharges of both the primary and secondary ball mills are pumped over a common set of five ten feet long by three feet wide straking tables, set at an angle of 10 degrees, before passing to the 14 ft. diameter by 30 ft. by 8 ft. Dorr bowl classifier.This classifier is in closed circuit with both of the ball mills, hence the whole of the circulating load of the fine grinding circuit, which approximates to 800 per cent., is required to pass over the straking tables. For convenience in handling, corduroy cloths are used in lengths of 5 feet, and are picked up and replaced by clean cloths at four-hourly intervals. The avaHable straking area provided is, therefore, 900 square feet, or approximately 3·30 square feet per original ton per 24 hours. The density of the pulp passing over the tables is about 54 per cent. solids, the area provided per ton of pulp per 24 hours being approximately o· 2() square feet. Washing of the corduroy cloths is carried out on the day shift only, about 800 lb. of strake concentrate being obtained daily.This concentrate is sluiced from the washing trough on the elevated straking floor to the 4 ft. by 2 ft. diameter amalgamating barrel located in the gold room below.The barrel is of standard design and is rotated at 25 r.p.m. It is charged each day at 4 p.m., and grinding of the strake concentrate at approximately 70 per cent. solids is continued until 8 a.m. the following day. The barrel is then stopped, and the contents generously diluted with water, and after a few minutes rotation some of the slime is carefully poured off through the small discharge hole. This dilution and decantation is repeated until a good deal of the valueless slime has been removed.A further quantity of strake concentrate is then charged to the barrel, which is allowed a further 16 hours grinding period. After again diluting and decanting, approximately 25 lb. of mercury and 15 lb. of lime are added to the charge, which is then given an amalgamation period of 2 hours before cleaning up.By the process of grinding, diluting and removal of slime by decanting...

The Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of tungsten from 57 mines and deposits in 19 market economy countries. The tungsten resources of China and the U.S.S.R. were also estimated. This resulted from an evaluation of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of tungsten available as ammonium paratungstate (APT), artificial and natural scheelite, and ferrotungsten at various average total costs of production including 0- and 15-pct rates of return on invested capital. The evaluated deposits contain 1.2 million metric tons (t) of recoverable WO3, of which approximately 52,000 t of AEYT can be produced at the January 1983 market price of $5.37/lb, 89,000 t of natural and artificial scheelite at a market price of $3.63/lb, and 1,700 t of ferrotungsten at $5.61/lb of tungsten. An annual availability analysis indicates that by the early 1990's new deposit discoveries, development of known prospects, or expansions of producing mines will be necessary to meet projected tungsten demand.

"Wetting theory is one of the basic theories of flotation. The effects of concentrations, carbon chain length and pH values of saturated fatty acid collectors (lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid) on the surface wettability of collophanite and dolomite were investigated by measuring the contact angle with dynamic captive-bubble technique and calculating adhesion work of bubble-mineral. The results show that the contact angles both of collophanite and dolomite are higher with enhancement of hydrophobicity when pH value of 5~9. The contact angles both of collophanite and dolomite are reduced with improvement of surface hydrophilicity. When strong acid pH value of 2~4 or strong alkaline pH value of 10~13. The reasons for this are that the fatty acids mainly exist with insoluble RCOOH molecules in strong acid condition, and competitive adsorption of OH- and RCOO- in the mineral surface is formed in strong alkaline condition. With the increase of the collector concentration, the contact angles of the collophanite and the dolomite all first increase then decrease. The formation of hydrophilic micelles results in the decreasing of contact angles and enhancement of surface hydrophilicity opposite when the collector concentration exceeds CMC. The contact angles of the collophanite and dolomite and the WSG of the bubble adhesion increase, the hydrophobicity enhance with the increasing of carbon chains of saturated fatty acid from 12 to 18. The variation tendency for the adsorption quantity of collectors and floatability of collophanite and dolomite are in line with the change trend of contact angle basically. It shows that the wettability of solid-liquid-gas interface can be well characterized by the dynamic captive-bubble technique.INTRODUCTIONPhosphorite resources are the main raw material for producing phosphate fertilizer and producing phosphoric acid (Cao et al.,2005), which is an important strategic mineral resource. The useful minerals in calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore are collophanite, and the main gangue minerals are dolomite (SISH et al.,2003). The lattice ions of the phosphorite and dolomite are both Ca2+, their similar surface properties and similar floatability are the main reason for the flotation of calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore difficultly (Fang et al.,2011). Usually, fatty acid collectors are used for the flotation of calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore under acidic conditions by reversing flotation method to remove dolomite (ABOUZEID et al.,2009), or direct flotation is used to gather collophanite in the alkaline conditions (Gong et al.,2017). The flotation behavior of collophanite and dolomite affects the indexes of concentrate and flotation efficiency directly. Therefore, it is necessary to study the action mechanism and the flotation method of the collector with the phosphate rock and dolomite respectively (Moudgil et al.,1988; Hanna, et al.,1990)."

A relação entre manganês e enxofre se torna de plena importância para o entendimento desse fenômeno. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo indicar a relação entre Manganês (Mn) e Enxofre(S) mais adequada para a não ocorrência deste fenômeno, e explicar a influência dessa relação nas propriedades dos aços C-Mn. Estudou-se um aço C-Mn com a relação Mn/S 50% menor do que a relação visada na Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional(CSN).

Nas últimas décadas, as fibras naturais têm sido investigadas como uma alternativa para a utilização de fibras sintéticas, como material de reforço, tais como fibras de vidro. Algumas vantagens das fibras naturais são a menor densidade, biodegradabilidade e o fato de virem de fontes renováveis. Com o intuito de melhorar ainda mais as propriedades de compósitos de fibras naturais, investiga-se o desempenho de compósitos reforçados com tecidos de fibras naturais, uma vez que estes proporcionam um reforço multidirecional e permite a introdução de uma maior fração de volume de tecido. Neste trabalho, investigou-se a resistência à tração dos compósitos com matriz de poliéster reforçados com diferentes frações de volume de tecido de rami, que é uma das mais lignocelulósicas mais resistentes. Os espécimes foram testados em uma máquina universal de ensaios Instron. Os resultados mostraram um aumento na resistência à tração com o aumento da fração de volume de tecido.

"The collision efficiency for small particles relative to 2D spherical bubbles in a developed turbulent flow field were calculated applying an adopted version of the CPD program FLUENT. The turbulence field was related to bubble size and fluid properties. The results were compared with analytical theory. The turbulence intensity was found to be the most important single parameter for collision efficiency. Effects of boundary layer thickness and particle diameter were discussed. IntroductionRemoval of inclusion particles from melted aluminium can be facilitated by means of a rotor system that supplies kinetic energy and gas bubbles to the floating metal. At the surface the inclusions adhere to the surface dross or slagg which is removed at regular intervals by the operators. When applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model such a system, one experiences difficulties with the large range of turbulent length-scales encountered, from the large geometrical scales of the rotor and container, through the bubble size and down to the particle diameter. A mathematical model for the complete system will be both complex and require an extreme spatial resolution. Another way of dealing with the problem is to model the micro-scale phenomena separately and apply the results to create a model for the macroscopic system. In a previous work [12] we addressed these problems and developed a procedure for calculating turbulence enhanced flotation to bubbles. It was found that turbulence may have a profound effect on the collision rate of particles to idealized bubbles. In this study we recognize that only a fraction of the total turbulent kinetic energy generated by the rotor's work on the liquid metal may contribute to enhanced flotation. By using a model spectrum for the turbulence, the fraction of turbulent energy in eddies smaller than the bubble diameter is calculated. A twodimensional CFD model was then constructed to calculate the collision efficiency between particles and bubbles of various sizes."

Reactions of gold?phosphino complexes [(AuX)(PR3)] (X= Cl, Br, I; R = organic rest) with Se(SiMe3)2 lead to the formation of gold complexes with chalcogenide bridges. The reaction of the complex Ph3PAuCl and tBuSe(SiMe3) gives the cluster [Au5Se2(PPh3)4]Cl 1. The in situ preparation of the complex [(AuCl)2dpph] (dpph = Ph2P(CH2)6PPh2) by reaction of dpph with Me2SAuCl, and subsequent reaction with Se(SiMe3)2 leads to the formation of [(Au3Se)2(dpph)3]Cl2 2. Reactions of the gold(I) complex [(AuCl)2dpppe], (dpppe = Ph2P(CH2)5PPh2) with Se(SiMe3)2 and InCl3 in different molar ratios lead to the formation of [Au10Se4(dpppe)4]InCl5 3 and [Au4(SeInCl3)2(dpppe)2] 4. The reaction of [(AuCl)2dpph] with Te(SiMe3)2 and GaCl3 produces the isostructural cluster compound [Au4(TeGaCl3)2(dpph)2] 5. From the reaction of Se(SiMe3)2 with [(AuCl)2dppe] (dppe = Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2) and InCl3 [Au8Se4In(dppe)4](InCl4)3 6 can be isolated. The structures of 1 - 6 were determined by X?ray diffraction.

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. This mobilized U is adsorbed on sediments in streams and lakes, or enters groundwaters, where it is eventually precipitated under reducing conditions, occasionally in oregrade concentrations. A crescente demanda de energia elétrica em nosso país sobrecarrega o Sistema de Transmissão [Tx] e Distribuição [Dx], e gera a necessidade de constantes ampliações para não prejudicar o desenvolvimento do Brasil. Neste contexto foram realizados estudos visando avaliar o efeito da adição de três teores de Ni em uma liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,24-0,28]%Fe-0,7%Si destinada à produção de cabos elétricos. O estudo parte da verificação e posterior comparação das características estruturais, mecânicas e elétricas da liga com a adição do elemento citado. Para a realização do mesmo, os perfis estudados foram obtidos por solidificação estática direta em lingoteira metálica e as amostras foram obtidas a partir de perfis solidificados, usinados e deformados a frio para diferentes diâmetros. Nestas circunstâncias, o diâmetro de 3,0 mm foi aquele que apresentou as melhores respostas elétricas, mecânicas e estruturais, sendo, portanto, adotado como fonte de estudo.

The Bureau of Mines believes that all coal mines are potentially gassy; for the purpose of administration in the prevention of explosions and fires, the Bureau recommends: That any coal mine wherein methane or other combustible gas can be detected in amounts as much as 0.27 of 1 percent or more by frequent systematic searches shall be classified as a gassy mine. Permissible methane-indicating detectors such as are given in I.C. 7110 or subsequent lists of Bureau approved methane-indicating detectors, or conventional methods of sampling and analysis of required accuracy may be used. The concentration referred to in the decision is percent by volume.

The length of the collector is found to influence the flotation of the mineral even at incipient conditions, which are below the concentration at which interaction at the solid-liquid interface begins to take place to form hemi-micelles. To study this dependence, concentration for incipient flotation of quartz was determined as a function of pH with collectors of various chain lengths. The observed effect of chain length on flotation is ascribed to that of collector adsorbed on the bubble surface. In previous studies, it was shown that at low concentrations the alkyl collector ions adsorb at the solid-liquid interface as individuals.''2 At higher concentrations, the collector ions adsorbed at the solid-liquid interface associate with each other to form two-dimensional aggregates called hemi-micelles. Above the hemi-micelle concentration, the length of the hydrocarbon chain is extremely important since the hydrocarbons are in effect removed from water during the association, making the energetic conditions more favorable for adsorption at the interface. Because of this enhanced adsorption, one observes a very rapid increase in flotation associated with the hemi-micelle formation at the solid-liquid interface. However, a dependence of flotation on the chain length at concentrations below that required for hemi-micelle association was also observed,' and this cannot be explained by the above mechanism which postulated hydrocarbon chain interactions only at the solid-liquid interface. This prompted an investigation into other possible reactions of the hydrocarbon chains and an examination of the conditions at the bubble surface involved in the flotation system and how these observations might explain the reactions at the solid-gas interface which cause the particle-bubble attachment required for flotation. To obtain more information on chain length effects, flotation, under incipient conditions, was tested by vacuum flotation techniques. The collector-concen-tration-pH relationships for flotation of quartz with alkyl ammonium acetate collectors was delineated by observing the pH at which quartz particles begin to float to the liquid surface. By investigating flotation as a function of pH, it was also possible to study the effect of neutral molecules on incipient flotation conditions, since the aminium ions hydrolyze to amine molecules at higher pH values. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Brazilian quartz specimens were crushed and sized, and the 270 x 400 mesh fraction was used for flotation studies. The samples were leached with concentrated hydrochloric acid until no coloration of the acid occurred. The leached material was washed free of chloride ions and stored in distilled water. The vacuum flotation technique developed by Schuhmann and prakash3 was used to determine the critical pH-concentration curves. This method, which can be used to delineate conditions for incipient flotation, is fairly simple and rapid. About 0.5 gm of 270 x 400 mesh quartz was placed in a 100 ml graduated cylinder which was then filled to the 100 ml mark with the collector solution made from high-purity alkyl ammonium acetate salts. The water used for the test was conductivity water saturated with air that had been passed through a cleansing train consisting of Drierite, Ascarite, a water wash bottle, and a trap. After the pH was adjusted, the cylinder was then conditioned for thirty minutes. In the tests where an acid pH was desired, sufficient acid was added before the collector solution to avoid any effect due to slow desorption of collector from the quartz surface. After conditioning, vacuum was applied to the system and the flotation or nonflotation of the quartz was noted. The pH at which the quartz particles began to float to the liquid-gas interface was taken as the critical PH. Critical pH curves were thus determined for different concentrations of the various collectors. Hallimond tube flotation data were taken from the authors' previous publication1 for correlation with that from the vacuum flotation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results of vacuum flotation studies for determining critical pH-concentration curves, i.e., curves which delineate conditions for incipient flotation, are shown in Fig. I.
