INTRODUCTION The control of nuisance water in a mine is extremely important; left uncontrolled, nuisance water can have a severe effect on haulage, ventilation, production, and the health and safety of miners. To control water in mines, a four-step process is followed: (1) prevention, (2) collection, (3) transportation, and (4) treatment. This chapter will be devoted to the collection and transportation of mine water because prevention is usually dictated by pre-mining conditions and initial planning, while treatment is variable and highly site specific. A mine drainage system is nothing more than a collection of gathering points (sumps), machines that impart energy to the fluid (pumps), transportation ducts (pipes), and control devices (fittings, valves, etc.). A pump does not pull the fluid up the suction pipe; atmospheric or external pressure pushes the liquid up the suction pipe to the pump. All references in this chapter will be to centrifugal pumps, due to their popularity for mine drainage. PUMP CHARACTERISTIC CURVES The performance of a pump is plotted on a graph as an indication of its characteristic. To develop the data points, a test facility similar to that shown in Fig. 1 is established. The calibrated Venturi meter is used to measure quantity, the Bourdon gage measures pressure, and the wattmeter measures power input. Various discharge pressures are obtained by throttling with a gate valve in the discharge pipe. Quantity and power are measured at each of these pressure levels, giving the necessary data for plotting the characteristic curves. Fig. 2 shows a typical characteristic curve for a centrifugal pump. Notice that pressure is measured as so many feet of vertical water column above the outlet level, or head. Knowing the quantity (in gallons per minute), head (in feet), and power input (brake horsepower), the pump's efficiency can be plotted based upon the following relationship:

During the past 16 years, the authors have successfully used high-capacity rock anchors installed inside open-ended pipe piles, driven to bedrock, to provide uplift and overturning resistance for various structures including piers, bridges, power plant components and commercial buildings. These systems were ultimately used on the projects due to a combination of high uplift forces or overturning moments on the structures and the relatively poor subsurface conditions present at the sites. Other, foundation systems such as rock-socketed drilled shafts and spin fin piles were considered but were found to be economically prohibitive or not technically feasible.

It is with pride that the authors of this paper report. that during 1944 the production of petroleum in Kentucky passed its all-time peak, 9,496,985 bbl. being contributed. The delivery of natural gas, especially from eastern Kentucky, was maintained and possibly exceeded the highest deliveries of the past. To raise the production of oil and gas was not easy with inferior and worn-out equipment and the shortage of skilled labor. Reminiscent of the early days of the industry in the state, particularly in the hills of Elliott County, where mud roads often have gradients of 45º, was the replacement of worn-out trucks and tractors by oxen. Of the total 9,496,985 bbl., 17 per cent was contributed by the part of Kentucky that is east of the Cincinnati arch, as compared with the total of 7,010,776 bbl. contributed in 1943, of which 25 per cent was contributed by eastern Kentucky. This discrepancy is due to the discovery of more new fields in western Kentucky rather than to a decrease in production in the eastern fields, where the average has been maintained by reconditioning and secondary recovery of old fields and further development of new pools reported for the first time in 1943. In all, 1103 wells were known to have been drilled in the state during 1944, of which 659 were drilled in western Kentucky and 444 in eastern Kentucky. The exact number of wells drilled for any year is never known, as drilling permits are not required except 'when it is planned to drill through a workable coal seam. Of the total number of wells drilled, 459 were oil wells, 229 gas wells and 415 dry holes. Two wells produced gas, the total initial production being 1,594,000 cu, ft. One hundred and eighteon wildcat wells were drilled, of which 107 were dry holes and 11 were oil wells. Three of the latter proved to be the discovery wells of commercial pools. Twelve new pools were discovered during 1944, none of major importance, as indicated in Table 2. The Utley pool, due to a stratigraphic trap on the flank of a closed structure, found oil in the Mcclosky at 2565 ft. in the discovery well, with initial productioil of 1000 bbl. O presente trabalho avalia o efeito das camadas de conversão a base de CrVI e CrIII aplicadas na superfície de arames galvanizados por imersão a quente. As bitolas testadas foram 1,24mm, 1,65mm e 3,00mm, utilizando os ensaios de Névoa Salina e Câmara Úmida, avaliando o aspecto superficial dos arames após 1, 3, 6, 24 e 28 horas de exposição ao ambiente agressivo. Pode ser observado que o ensaio de Névoa Salina é pouco indicado para avaliar a oxidação superficial do arame em função de sua agressividade. Os resultados foram melhor interpretados utilizando o ensaio de Câmara Úmida. Inicialmente os arames recobertos por uma camada de conversão a base de CrIII apresentaram desempenho levemente superior àqueles recobertos por CrVI, considerando os mesmos tempos de exposição. Após seis horas os arames galvanizados apresentaram comportamentos semelhantes. O arame galvanizado com maior resistência a oxidação foi aquele protegido com CrIII, porém com o passar do tempo os dois tipos de revestimento se equivalem.

To extend our knowledge of the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals, the response of the following minerals to ethyl xanthate as collector was studied by captive bubble and cylinder flotation tests: antimonite (Sb2S3), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), covellite (CuS), rnarcasite (FeS2), orpiment (As&.), pyrrhotite (FeS) and tetrahedrite (4CU2S, Sb2S3). Lollingite (FeAs2) was also exarnined to determine if its behavior could be correlated with that of pyrite or rnarcasite (FeS2. Experimental Method Mineral for Flolation and Contact Tests Mineral was prepared in the manner a1ready described1 and its behavior both freshly ground and "oxidized" was studied. Tests in which the mineral was allowed to oxidize for various periods showed that a uniform response to xanthate was reached in two days or less. Oxidation Products The soluble oxidation products from most of the above minerals were measured and their effect on the flotation of the mineral studied. The mineral samples were wet ground to minus-52 mesh and deslimed, and 20 g of this material placed in 200 ml of distilled water of a measured pH value, and CO2-free air bubbled through each suspension at a constant rate (about I bubble/sec) for 5 days. It has been shown1 that the size of the mineral is unimportant in the rate of formation , oxidation products and that probably the supply of oxygen to the mineral is the rate-determining step. At the end of 5 days the pH value of the 'supernatant liquid was measured again, the mineral filtered off and the soluble products determined. Methods for estimation of sulphur acids, ferrous and ferric iron and copper have already been described.l No satisfactory method was found for antimony. Arsenic was estimated as the arsenate.2 Flotation of "Unoxidized" Minerals with Ethyl Xanthate as Collector Fig I to 3, 4. 6, show the effect of alkali and cyanide as depressants for the minerals with 25 mg potassium ethyl xanthate per liter as collector at 35°C. Wark and Cox8 have shown that with ethyl xanthate as collector, galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite show a greater tolerance to cyanide and hydroxyl ions at room temperature than at 35°C Covellite (Fig I), marcasite (Fig 2) and pyrrhotite (Fig 3) behave similarly. Effects of various factors such as diaphragm materials, composition of electrolytes and current density on copper electrowinning from cupric chloride solutions was investigated. It is found that the crux of this process is to prevent the dissolution of copper by cupric ion and the formation of suspended CuCl precipitate. A process with high difference of copper concentrations between the feed solution and the spent electrolyte was selected. With this process, in which the feed solution contains 90 g/dm3 [Cu"], 3M NaC1, and 10mg/dm3 bone glue, and the spent electrolytes contains 10 g/dm3 [Cul, a very smooth and dense copper cathode can be produced with current efficiency above 93% and energy requirement less than 1.7 kwh/kg Cu at 25°C with N2 sparging. If a slightly higher energy requirement is permitted, smooth and dense copper cathodes can be produced at the current density up to 800 A/m2 with the identical solutions.

FOREWORD THE problem of concentrating the disseminated lead ore of southeast Missouri is extremely simple. The economic mineral is galena and the gangue is dolomite. The ore assays from 4 to .6 per cent. lead, 80 per cent. of which is recovered in a 70 per cent. concentrate.. The ore is crushed through 10 mm. and sized on 2 mm.; the oversize is jigged, while the undersize is tabled, and the slime treated by flotation. The district is the largest lead producer in the world, the output of metallic lead for the year 1915 being 183,906 tons. Over 20,000 tons of ore a day is being treated. The management of the different properties is progressive and always open to suggestion. The fact; however, must not be lost sight of, that the problem in the district is peculiar, as the average ore contains but 80 to 120 lb. of a metal normally selling at about 4c. per lb. The low price of the metal limits the treatment system to one of low cost. An elaborate treatment is neither logical nor advisable. An engineer first visiting the district may consider that the method of treatment could be improved

"The most common extraction method in Polish coal mines utilize pillars between adjacent longwall panels. This is mainly due to the significant depth and difficulties in maintaining stability of the gateroads. This paper presents measurements of entry convergence and range of the fracture zone around a gateroad measured with a borehole camera. The entry where the measurements were taken was located in a parallel entry separated from the gateroad by a 5-m- (16-ft-) wide pillar. The gateroad was located in a hard coal seam 900 m (2,952 ft) deep with a dip of 5°. The extraction method was longwall mining with caving and the mining height was about 3 m (10 ft).Furthermore, the ""in situ"" measurements were compared to the convergence forecast for the gateroad and fracture zone by means of numerical modeling conducted using the Phase2 Version X.X finite element program from Rocscience. The determination of the fractured zone around the openings is of great importance to successful mining practice, especially in support planning and design for longwall gateroads. Moreover, proper determination of the fractured rock zone is one of the basic elements in the process of planning the roof bolting for mine workings.INTRODUCTIONIn the Polish. hard coal mining sector, retreat longwall extraction is most commonly used (Prusek and Masny, 2007). This method is connected with the necessity to carry out a number of development operations during the first stage, including among others, driving of gateroads and a setup room.Currently, most Polish mines eliminate gateroads behind the extraction front, using the ""U"" ventilation system (Szlitzak et al., 2008). In such cases, one of the roads for the next longwall panel is driven along the caving goafs, leaving a protective pillar of some chosen width (Figure 1). The question regarding the width of the coal pillar is especially important to the stability of the gateroads that define the panel for the subsequent longwall. When analyzing the previous experience relating to this type of pillar (Junker, 2006; Rajwa, 2008; Stranzet et al., 1973; Betriebsempfehlung, 1982), one can state that there exist two solutions for the determination of its width."

A survey of geological conditions, production and prices in Indiana oil fields. Shows no production and indefinite prospects from the sub-Trenton formation; good production and much untested territory in Trenton formation; and fair production from the Pennsylvanian with fair prospects for the future in both the Pennsylvanian and Mississip-pian formations. THE petroleum industry of Indiana made somewhat notable progress during the year 1923, considering the number of handicaps it encountered. The price of labor and materials continued to have an upward slant while the price of crude oil took a decidedly downward course. In spite of these adverse conditions, the quantity production will closely approximate that of 1922, when it passed the million-barrel mark. The progress of the industry in Indiana should be considered fairly satisfactory as long as the present production is maintained. In other words, if the loss of production from the waning old wells can be offset by the production from the new for a period of 10 or 15 years longer, the industry may have cause for congratulation.

"Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades, increased operating costs and increased construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a consequence, the 60 to 100 cubic foot flotation machine of the l950's and l960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines, with a resulting improvement in the flotation machine specific capacity (TPH processed per square foot floor space), specific power (HP per TPH processed) and process control simplicity. The recent development, and satisfactory plant evaluation, of the WEMCO 1000 cubic foot flotation machine provides the means by which further economic and operating advantages may be incorporated in high tonnage mill applications.The systematic development of the large 1000 cubic foot flotation machine, and its subsequent performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores (copper, zinc and iron) will be reviewed in this paper and recently completed plant results will also be provided."

These studies are being made in order that hazards, excessive use of power, and high maintenance cost of equipment resulting from these losses may be analyzed and eliminated where possible. Research on the use of electric power in-coal mines was suggested by the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Mines in 1937, and it was decided to begin with a study of individual machines of various types under operating conditions in modern coal mines. The transmission of power, particularly line losses and inadequate return circuits, should be a part of the investigation. This report presents some of the data of an initial study in commercial mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The superintendents, engineers, and other officials of the two mines studied cooperated fully and aided in setting up and transporting the test equipment, giving such information as was requested.

MICROSCOPIC. rnetallography has been exploited quite well enough to bring about a very general understanding that the typical metal or alloy is composed of minute crystalline particles blended into a coherent microstructural mosaic. One does not have to be a specialist in metallography to realize that the properties of such an aggregate are essentially a summation in appropriate form of individual effects derived from the shape, size, placement or orientation and cohesive characteristics of the component particles. It is clearly of great importance to consider the various forms of discontinuity which may occur at the boundaries between these crystalline particles. When a number of 'particles each possessing the same orderly arrangement of atoms are brought together into a close-fitting system of purely haphazard contacts, not unlike a handful of snowflakes compacted into a snowball, the particles are said to possess random orientation. There are no generally accepted views concerning the arrangement of the atoms or the constitutional reaction between atoms where one crystal meets another, but these contact regions are characterized by strength rather than weakness and it is customary to require the presence of many rather than few boundaries in preparing metal for useful service. Under certain circumstances all of the particles in a metal may be nearly alike in orientation. Other general tendencies of orientation may be associated with particular forms of mechanical and thermal treatment. In contrast with these cases of fortuitous or statistical diversity of orientation, we often find adjacent particles united along a plane which possesses a grouping of atoms belonging equally well to both structures. This, of course, determines a fixed relationship between the two orientations and it is always possible to derive one from the other by some form of rotation or reflection prescribed by the symmetry of the crystal structure under consideration. Particles united in this manner are known as twin crystals although the term refers to the form of association rather than the number of individuals concerned.

Production of oil in Indiana during 1944 is estimated at approximately 4,950,000 bbl., a decline of 6 per cent from the preceding year. Shortage of labor and material, together with governmental regulations resulting from the war, largely account for the drop in output and limited new developments. Three new pools were discovered in the state during 1944. Two of these, New Harmony, South, and Hovey, West, are in Posey County. Six wells in the New Harmony, South, field produced 66,422 bbl. of oil last year. A third field, Cato, in Pike County, did not market the oil from its discovery well during 1944. Several wells discovered oil in the Henderson field of Jay County along the Ohio state line. An important south extension of the St. Thomas field in Knox County was discovered during the year. Active drilling took place in the Inman, East, and Upton fields, Posey County, both discovered in 1943. Twenty-two wells in Inman, East, produced 151,1gr bbl. in 1944 and 12 in Upton produced 107,052 bbl. Owensville, and especially Owensville, North, in Gibson County, made large gains in production as a result of active drilling. The Dodds Bridge field in Sullivan County continued good production from deep sands reached in 1942. The Griffin continued to be the largest producer among the oil pools of Indiana, accounting for 2,004,180 bbl., over 40 per cent of the state's output. The next largest producing fields are Mt. Vernon and New Harmony, both in Posey County. The largest gas well brought in during 1944 was in the Rockport field, Spencer County, and had an initial output of 2,680,000 cu. ft. per day. The most productive gas fields in Indiana are Rockport, Spencer County, Greensburg, Decatur County, and Unionville, Monroe County. Total production in the state is . hard to estimate, as considerable gas is consumcd in farm homes and for other local uses, and never is reported, but was near 1500 million cubic feet. Some oil from the Trenton field is also used locally and is unreported from pipe-line runs. A total of 606,145 ft. of new hole was drilled in Indiana in 1944. Most of the completions were in Posey and Gibson counties, although wells were drilled in 36 different counties. During the year 331 wells were completed. Of these, 145 found oil in commercial quantities and 28 were gas wells. The initial production of the 145 oil wells was 11,908 bbl. per day. Settled production would be less, of course. The largest wells reported during the year were two on the J. W. Mann farm, in the Mt. Vernon field, with a flush flow of 500 to 800 bbl. each.. Six pools, all small "one well" affairs, were abandoned in 1944; i.e., Fleenor and Patoka in Gibson County, Grafton and Rapture in Posey County, Vaughn in Vandei-bwgh County and Millersburgh, Warrick County.

The first test pile for the carrier pier and south wharf at NAVSTA Puget Sound was driven on December 27, 1989, and the final pile was tested on February 26, 1990. Implementation and modification of the test pile program were done by the owners (WESTDIV and ROICC-Everett), the engineers (ABAM and Hart Crowser), and the contractor and his subcontractor (General Manson Joint Venture and GRL). The site is located as shown on Figure 1. SUMMARY OF THE SOIL CONDITIONS A soil profile along the pier is shown as Figure 2. The soil units can be generalized as follows: ? Upper Silts - Fill, sandy silt, and clayey silt extending from the mudline to an elevation of about -80 feet; ? Intermediate Sand - A medium dense to very dense silty sand unit which is about 30 feet thick near the shore, but thins and disappears offshore; ? Lower Silts - Sandy silts and clayey silts in a medium stiff to stiff condition; ? Deep Sand - A very dense overconsolidated sandy soil encountered at an elevation of about -145 feet.

This chapter is written primarily from the standpoint of development of flotation processes for treatment of specific ores. However, most of the principles and techniques discussed are equally applicable to other forms of applied flotation research such as improvement of procedures in existing plants and development of new reagents or methods without reference to specific ores. Because it is not possible to cover this subject in detail here, much of the material presented is in the form of a guide to the literature, with emphasis on readily available, English language publications. Details are included only if considered to be widely applicable or not readily accessible in the literature. Related subjects which are covered elsewhere in this volume, such as flowsheet design and statistical techniques, are not emphasized in this chapter. The material presented is intended primarily for those familiar with the theory and practice of flotation, but with limited experience in applied flotation research. It may be of value to the experienced investigator as well, by calling to his attention some useful viewpoints or techniques that he may have overlooked. It has often been said that flotation is more of an art than a science. In- deed much of the knowledge of flotation behavior is empirical. However, the unsystematic, artisan approach to flotation problems results only in an ac- cumulation of unrelated data. Like any other physical or chemical process, flotation is amenable to investigation by systematic experimental methods. The experiments should be based, as far as possible, on an understanding of the natural laws that govern the process and on good experimental procedures. SAMPLING OF A DEPOSIT In working out a flotation process for a mineral deposit, no step is more important than that of obtaining a suitable sample or samples. Experimental procedures cannot compensate for the lack of a representative sample. Methods of sampling a deposit have been published elsewhere,l-4 but a few points are of special importance from the standpoint of flotation. First, the sample should be representative of the deposit, not only in respect to chemical composition, but also in respect to mineralogical composition and degree of dissemination of the valuable minerals. The paper outlines the development and objectives of the slim core (50 mm dia.) testing procedures employed at the Company's Central Research Laboratories with particular reference to washability studies required for coalfield evaluation. It shows that when the routine test procedures, that have been developed for cores recovered form the Sydney Coal Basin, were applied to Bowen Basin Coals some of the washing data obtained appeared to be suspect. Though yield indications appeared to be of the right order, product ash, required separating gravity and percentage of near gravity material were found to be at variance with bulk washability data. The results of a correlation study made on an underground seam from the Bowen Basin comparing slim core, hulk sample, and pilot plant washing data are given. The results of a series of studies including washability studies made on slim cores, strip samples, large diameter cores and bulk samples, pilot washing trials and computer simulations of washery circuits treating Lilyvale seam coal from the Bowen Basin are shown.

Breakage, handling and treatment techniques that result in the placement of greater quantities of coal in fixed volume haulage units such as ships, railroad cars, trucks, mine cars, shuttle cars and scoops can do much to increase productivity by improving bulk density to reduce delivered cost, surprisingly enough, only in steel industry by-product coking has this subject been investigated and applied to practice, where as much as 20% or more productivity has been achieved. Research at UK Mining using popular coal mine loading cycle simulators shows that for typical Central Appalachian mining conditions a 10 to 20 percent gain in bulk density can produce a 15 to 30 percent increase in the loading cycle time of fixed volume shuttle-car/scoop based mining systems.
