Up to 3 million tons of automotive shredder residue (ASR) is generated annually in United States. Plastics are the most valuable component of the ASR material making up approximately 25% of the total weight. In order to reuse these plastics, a selective process is required to separate each plastic, with very high purity and favorable economics. One separation technique, which may be able to selectively recover the plastics from ASR, is flotation. The preliminary flotation results have demonstrated that acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) can be selectively separated from the model ASR feed, the PC/ABS/PA 66 system, by appropriate control of the surface chemistry.

O presente trabalho avaliou as influências da adição de boro nas características mecânicas e micro estruturais do fio máquina e arame trefilado. O estudo foi realizado por meio de análises no aço 10B45 com variações na adição de boro. Foi verificado que a adição de boro reduz a resistência do material. O boro reduz os efeitos do envelhecimento pois associa-se ao nitrogênio formando o nitreto de boro alocado no contorno de grão. Quanto maior a adição de boro menor resistência à trefilação, o que pôde ser comprovado pelo ensaio de torção. Através das micrografias de fio máquina foi possível evidenciar que o boro também atua como refinador de grão e inibe o crescimento do mesmo. Por fim, foi possível avaliar o modo de fratura relacionado com a quantidade de boro adicionada. Neste ponto não foi possível atribuir maior ductilidade à amostra com maior teor de boro.

This report describes the application of pulsed magnetic fields derived from alternating and intermittent magnetizing currents. Application of such pulsed magnetic fields to the matrix-type separator permits (1) the complete discharge of the magnetic fraction with wet feeds and (2) the dry separation at particle sizes down to 325 mesh. At smaller particle s indications are that frequencies above 60 hertz will be required. Applications of intermittent magnetizing current to the cross-belt separator give the cross-belt-separator an advantage over the conventional constant-field cross-belt and induced roll separators; the intermittent current enables the cross-belt separator to separate matted fibrous and magnetically coagulating feeds, a type of feed that occasionally occurs with mineral, industrial, and secondary materials.

Sulphur is derived from both 'voluntary' and 'involuntary' production. The former category includes sulphur obtained from elemental sulphur deposits and from pyrite and gypsumanhydrite deposits. Sulphur in the latter category is produced by pollution abatement at fossil Juel plants and from treatment of metallic sulphides. Canada is the world's largest sulphur exporter and third largest producer. Main resources of Canadian sulphur are sulphurous fossil fuels, metallic sulphides and native sulphur. Only the first two sources have produced sulphur in Canada 10 date; the first source accounts for over 85% of total Canadian production. Future sulphur sources will be derived increasingly through pollution abatement and decreasingly through voluntary production.

A homogeneous suspension is viewed by X-rays. The radiation density seen, affords a measure of the extra absorption due to the solids contained. This radiation density, at a predetermined depth, varies with time. The chart of this relationship gives the desired determination. s it is frequently necessary to know the distribu-rt tion of particle sizes in various products used in industrial applications, a number of means have been devised for these determinations. Some of them include direct microscopic measurement, screening of product, extraction of samples from a settling slurry, air and liquid elutriation, adsorption of gases and liquids, and light absorption. The absorption of light as a means for particle size analysis has been known and employed for some time. X-ray absorption has not received the attention that light has enjoyed primarily because of the complex and costly instrumentation involved with X-rays. In 1954, Brown and Skrebowskil suggested the use of X-rays for this type of determination but did not supplement their suggestion with experiment. In 1958, the authors conducted size analysis experiments on suspensions of quartz with the Trans-viewer: an X-ray unit specifically adapted for sedimentation research, and Rossa conducted experiments in a similar manner in 1959 with a stable gamma emitter, AmZ4l, on suspensions of uranium oxide. To illustrate the applicability of X-ray absorption for analyzing particle size distributions, an essentially mono-energetic and well collimated X-ray beam was used as a source. The beam was made mono-energetic by placing a zirconium filter before the counting window together with feeding the pulses from the proportional counter into a reverter, a device capable of discriminating against pulses of various heights. The sketch in Fig. 1 shows the collimation arrangement in more detail. As shown, the X-ray beam was collimated by inserting a 3/8-in. ID pipe into one of the ports of the X-ray tube and further by two small steel plates with slits 3/32-in. wide and 1/2-in. long placed in front of the window of the Geiger-Mueller (G-M) tube. One of the plates was located 1/2 in. and the other 2 1/2 in. from the window of the counter; both plates were contained in an aluminum holder mounted on the box containing the G-M tube. This type and degree of collimation should eliminate any intensity due to scattered radiation; the transmitted intensity would then be solely a functior. of the absorption by the suspension at that level. Experimentally, homogeneous suspensions of finely ground quartz were prepared, Daxad (a sulfo-nated compound made from wood) was added as dis-persant, and the transmitted X-ray intensity measured as a function of time at a fixed depth in the suspension. In more detail, the experimental procedure involved the following: 1) measuring the transmitted X-ray intensity through the Daxad solution at a predetermined position or settling depth in the absence of solids, 2) placing a known amount of dry solids into the vessel and agitating thoroughly, 3) measuring the transmitted X-ray intensity at time zero (i.e., immediately upon cessation of stirring), and 4) measuring the transmitted X-ray intensity as a function of time (a 10-sec counting interval being chosen and counting being started 5 sec before the desired time). "Reports are sometimes heard of one ill effects of pneumatic tools on the hands of workmen. In consequence of such reports, Dr. Francis M. Barnes, Jr., M..D. of St. Louis, Missouri, was retained by the operators to make an investigation of conditions in the Bedford, Indiana, region, and the result of this investigation was published the Journal of the Missouri State Medical Association, Volume 16, February 1919. A brief review of this report may be of interest to all users of pneumatic tools, or operators of plants where such tools are employed.The investigation was made during December 1917, and involved an examination of general working conditions, and a careful physical examination of stoneworkers who had long used pneumatic tools. As the Bedford district is the most important structural limestone producing center in the country, the results of this investigation may be regarded as fairly conclusive as to the general effect of pneumatic tools on limestone workers."

O ambiente de Tecnologia de Automação (TA) compartilha características semelhantes à TI, porém implantar processos de gestão no ambiente de TA de uma empresa já existente demanda uma série de ações para garantir que este sistema de gestão está alinhado aos objetivos da organização, que este sistema de gestão está sendo realmente utilizado e sustentável e, principalmente, que este sistema de gestão é aderente aos requisitos da rotina da TA. Os principais retornos sobre o investimento neste tipo de projeto são em termos de organização das atividades e produtividade de pessoal, de disponibilidade dos ativos pela resposta planejada e rápida a falhas e de visibilidade da TA dentro da organização. Este trabalho define as diretrizes para o desenho e implantação de processos de gestão. Estas diretrizes foram empregadas em projetos de Metais e Mineração, como no caso específico do Departamento de Automação e Instrumentação da Samarco Mineração.

SOME months ago, I had occasion to make an investigation that introduced the subject of blue powder that is produced as a byproduct in zinc dis-tillation. Although every zinc smelter is aware that more or less blue powder production is inevitable and there is a common practice as regards the treatment of it, the specific and quantitative data respecting the subject were more imperfect than would have been expected. I had reports from eight important works. Some of the data were especially determined for my investigation. Speaking generally, there is a good deal of uniformity in the figures, all of which show that the blue powder product, bears a large proportion to the ore originally charged into the retorts; that a large proportion of the retort capacity is devoted to the redistillation of blue powder; and that of the spelter product of a furnace about 30 per cent. is derived from blue powder, i.e., it is zinc that has been distilled twice. During the past few years the combination of continuous billet casting with in-line reduction has been studied and several machines have been built with this capability included in the design parameters. (1,2,3,4,5) In-line reduction and continuous casting in combination are obvious and attractive. As pinch rolls are already in place for the continuous casting operation, it can be readily seen that a redesign of the mechanical and electrical equipment of the pinch rolls is all that is necessary to have in-line rolling. There have been numerous in-line reduction experiments conducted by simply increasing the pinch roll pressure on existing machines. (6,7,8,9) These generally failed to produce quality billets and often resulted in internal metallurgical defects (Figure 1).

Este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar uma análise comparativa das propriedades de revestimentos soldados com a liga INCONEL 625 sobre o aço ASTM A516 grau 70 obtidos pelos processos eletrodo revestido e arame tubular. Para tanto, foram realizados ensaios de mecânicos, metalográficos e de corrosão nos revestimentos obtidos. A análise metalográfica evidenciou a presença de precipitados ao longo do metal de solda obtido pelo processo arame tubular, não sendo verificada esta ocorrência para o processo eletrodo revestido. Os ensaios mecânicos mostraram resultados satisfatórios para ambos os processos. Os ensaios de corrosão realizados em conformidade com a norma ASTM G48 não evidenciaram a ocorrência de pites e a perda de massa foi satisfatória para ambos os processos. Baseado nos resultados obtidos pode-se inferir que ambos os processos de soldagem se mostraram adequados para a deposição de revestimentos com a liga INCONEL 625.

Wet-drum magnetic separators are used extensively for upgrading iron ore and for magnetite recovery in dense-medium circuits. In this study the performance of a continuous, laboratory wet-drum magnetic separator was evaluated with and without the application of ultrasonic energy when processing dense medium slurries. Test variables included magnetic-to-nonmagnetic ratio, solids concentration, and nonmagnetic materials. The results indicate that under certain conditions, the purity of the magnetic material increased after ultrasonic treatment.

Occidental's in situ retorting process for oil shale has many advantages over the conventional, underground mine and surface retort. Only a portion of the oil shale is mined and transported outside where it blends with the oil-shale talus found in the area. Spent shale is retained underground without surface disposal problems. The process consumes no water from outside sources. Noise and dust levels are kept at a minimum. As many of the facilities as possible are located underground. More oil is produced from a given area than conventional surface processing. Additional energy can be recovered by using conventional turbines to generate electrical power of magnitude of three to four times required by the operation.

This program was a four phase program with experimental dual frequency equipment resulting from Phase I, emergency single frequency equipment developed under Phase II, and equipment documentation required under Phase III. The purpose of the work covered by this contract is to develop a ground and pilot conductor connector which will significantly improve mine trailing cable splice performance. This work compliments the work completed under Contract 00357100 on the development of crimp connectors for the phase conductors of trailing cables. A brief discussion on splice problems is presented as an introductory means and substantiates the need for the development and test programs outlined in this report. As with the phase development work, the ground and pilot connector work is essentially of an empirical nature. As a result time is devoted to explaining the derivations of the test procedures used. In order to familiarize the reader with connector terminology a section is devoted to a glossary of pertinent terms. The connector design effort includes connectors for splicing ground and pilot conductors. A distinction is made between connectors suitable for splicing round and flat ground configurations. The same also applies to the pilot conductors. During the course of this work, much time has been devoted to the question of suitability of round cable configurations for trailing cable applications. This is discussed in detail along with resulting conclusions and recommendations. A field test program was conducted in order to confirm ground and pilot connector laboratory data. This testing also determined the viability of the connector designs and recommended installation techniques in a mine environment.

Fragmentation is the basic concern in rock blasting and serves as the main measure of blasting effectiveness. A good estimation of fragment size distribution before blasting is very useful and helpful for selecting the proper equipment for loading, transporting, and crushing rocks. A fragmentation model is presented that is based on a hole by hole analysis and correlates the rock properties, burden, spacing, and explosive column with the blasted volume and fragmentation obtained. The drill bench is divided into three separate areas corresponding to different breakage mechanisms. They are: 1) a main breakage or casting area, 2) a secondary breaking area, and 3) an overbreak area. The boundary of the main breakage area is found from the magnitudes of strains in the stress waves and the tensile strength of the rock. The secondary breaking area is determined by stress wave reflections at discontinuities and interactions between colliding stress waves from adjacent boreholes. The overbreak area is that beyond the main breakage area "where the reflected tensile waves no longer break the rock. This analysis is applied on a hole by hole basis to locate the breaking points. Then connecting the breaking points on each side of a borehole forms the triangle of the main breakage area. This is repeated for the next hole and the remaining area is the secondary breakage area. After the angle and area for each hole are found the Kuz-Ram model is used to predict the fragmentation size distribution for each hole. Then summing up the size distribution for each hole gives the total fragmentation distribution. This analysis has been successfully applied to field tests performed in a limestone bench where the entire spoil pile was screened to determine the fragment size distribution. Knowing the explosive and rock properties the breaking area was found for each hole, the strain and stress values, the breaking point, and angle of breakage (104 degrees). The fragmentation size distribution was then calculated and compared to the field data with excellent agreement.

Present indications are that in about 2-3 years phosphor tags will be required in commercial explosives. A permissible 254 run ultraviolet lamp assembly has been developed to permit mine inspectors to detect such phosphor tags and therefore to establish if non-permissible explosives were used. This new lamp is powered by a Miner's cap battery without interference with the normal lighting requirements of the cap lamp battery. It is compact, light, and rugged with very high ultraviolet output.

Research personnel from the Bureau of Mines, a representative of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and research contractors for the Bureau of Mines met with other Government and industry representatives at three seminar locations in December 1980 to discuss the findings and products of Bureau research on mine safety training. The research program is aimed at providing assistance to the mining community in its efforts to reduce industrial-type, human-error accidents through research establishing performance based methods and media for employee training. Research emphasis is directed toward development of baseline materials and instructional models; development of methods for structuring and evaluating health and safety, supervisory, and occupational training; and the continued investigation and application of current learning and simulation technology that could significantly enhance the effectiveness of training opportunities.

The Amazon Craton is one of the largest cratonic areas and comprises one of the est-endowed metallogenic provinces in the world. It hosts a number of different ore deposit types for which a variety of mineral exploration data are presently available at various scales and formats. These data, however, are not properly organised nor integrated by means of advanced spatial analysis tools. In this view, here we present a suite of neural network methods that were applied to these data, providing unprecedented mineral potential scenarios for several precious and base metals in the region.
