Ghana, a major West African gold-producing country, took a crucial step in 1986 to allow private participation in mining ventures that had hitherto been state controlled and starved of funds. This decision has led to a three-fold rise in gold production with substantial local and foreign capital once again flowing into exploration and mining projects. Though the rise in gold export is due primarily to increased production from large mines such as Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Billiton Bogosu Gold, Tebrebie Goldfields and Ghana Australia Gold that work primary lode gold deposits on quartz veins and Banket conglomerates, a fair amount of gold comes from placer gold mining from which two new mines have been developed at Kwabeng and Bonte during the current gold boom. Also, placer gold mining is important locally because the lower capital outlay required for its development enables many entrepreneurs to operate small concessions and provide employment for a large pool of unskilled labor. Placer gold exploration and development in Ghana is labor-intensive. Pitting is the most used method although few employ the mechanized (“Banka”) drilling. The advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches in the local setting are discussed. The gravel is normally sluiced and the gold recovered by amalgamation. The drawbacks to successful placer gold exploration in Ghana have been attributed to lapses in execution of exploration programs (Dzigbodi-Adjimah and Arhin, 1993; Dzigbodi-Adjimah and Gawu, 1994). However, the failure to recognize and set time frameworks and financial limitations for the various stages of placer gold exploration have spelt the doom of some projects. It is critical that the characteristics of the placer gold deposit be determined by efficient and cost effective means. A planned exploration supported by adequate flow of funds saves costs and leads to success. This article discusses the current Ghanaian situation and presents proposals from case studies for planning and budgeting placer gold exploration pro-grams for use in similar settings.

Past failures of coal refuse embankments have resulted in intensified efforts in inspections of coal refuse sites by the Mining. Enforcement, and Safety Administration (MESA). MESA inspections however, are mainly qualitative and are often time consuming, Therefore, in August 1975 CH2M HILL was awarded a contract to identify, develop, and test a rapid system for monitoring coal refuse embankments to aid in MESA inspections. The rapid monitoring system developed uses convergent and vertical photography from conventional fixed-wing aircraft. The system was tested on an active landslide and on two coal refuse facilities using both black and white and color infrared film. Field tests showed the system was capable of accurate measurement while providing qualitative data through photo interpretation. The accuracy of the system allows it to be used to monitor coal refuse embankments, tailings dams, major earth dams, and natural slopes. Based on CH2M HILL results cost for monitoring by rapid system was approximately 25 percent of cost by conventional ground survey.

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma proposta de metodologia para auxílio na fase de planejamento de um projeto de manutenção, objetivando a redução de falhas no mesmo. Tal estudo possui relevância, pois quando se trata de manutenção preventiva o custo é sempre considerável para qualquer empresa, uma vez que para realização as máquinas devem ser paradas e recursos humanos e materiais devem ser disponibilizados, desta forma o planejamento deve ser feito de maneira que sejam utilizados apenas os recursos necessários e suficientes para manter a qualidade dos equipamentos. A metodologia se embasa na teoria geral de projetos e utiliza de maneira sequenciada e estratégica ferramentas já aplicadas no mundo da manutenção para determinar as oito fases personalizadas para um evento de manutenção. A aplicação da metodologia facilita o trabalho do planejador o que consequentemente viabiliza a sua entrada no meio industrial, posto que a metodologia é altamente simples e sequenciada, o planejador não precisa conhecer com detalhes a teoria de projetos para utiliza-la. Portanto, com objetivo de facilitar e sequenciar o planejamento da manutenção afim de reduzir falhas, a metodologia trabalha de maneira forte a análise e gestão de riscos e definição de cronogramas em projetos.

THE first commercial production of bituminous coal in the United States was in 1820, and formation of acid in the areas from which the coal was removed began at that time. Thus it is 130 years since the development of mine acid began. The coal operator has had to deal with the acid water produced in his mines, and his losses from corrosion of pumps and equipment have been tremendous. Other industries and the public have been forced to spend large amounts for their water requirements because of the acid discharge from the mines. There are many contradictions in the literature on this subject probably because of variations in the analytical procedures followed and differences in the methods of calculation and reporting. The opinions previously expressed may be summarized as follows: The production of mine acid has been looked upon as a simple chemical reaction wherein the oxygen of the air has reacted with pyrite to produce ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid. This reaction appears in many chemistry texts and generally has not been considered worthy of further study. Since the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration or activity was developed and expressed in terms of pH, indicator and instrumental methods for pH determination have become readily available, making it natural to think of it as a measure of acid content. Special purpose analytical methods applicable to potable waters, sewage effluents, and boiler waters, based in general upon the determination of what may be regarded as impurities, have been applied to more concentrated solutions constituting mine discharges, without reference to the fact that these specialized procedures had been developed to serve as operating guides for water-treatment plants. Increased flow was thought to result in a dilution of the acid produced. When the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a fellowship at Mellon Institute, the first approach to the problem was to review some of the chemical reactions involved and their relation to acid production. Since the sulphates of iron were among the principal constituents of coal-mine drainage, the first studies were based upon solutions of chemically pure ferrous and ferric sulphate. These are both neutral salts, that is, the iron and the sulphate are equivalent, but they produce acid reactions in water solution because as salts of strong acids with weak bases, they hydrolyze to form acid solutions. During the past year considerable progress was made in the exploitation of Iraq's resources, although no new fields were discovered. The principal development was the completion of the much heralded pipe line from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean, by the Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd., and the beginning of crude exports to Europe on the second of August. Official ceremonies for the opening of the lines took place in January, 1935. The line in itself is sufficient achievement under the existing natural handicaps to deserve a moment's attention. It is 1151 miles long, composed of two independent lines made up mostly of 12-in. with some 10-in. and 8-in. pipe, and extends from Kirkuk westward 156 miles to beyond the Euphrates River as a double line. From that point, near the village of Haditha inside the Iraq border, it bifurcates, one leg going as a single line to Haifa through the British Mandated Territories of Trans-Jordania and Palestine, and the other to Tripoli through the French Mandates of Syria and the Leban(on)ese Republics. The total length of the Tripoli line is 532 miles, of the Haifa line 619 miles. The line leaves Kirkuk at an elevation of 1013 ft., drops to 350 ft. at the Tigris, to 200 ft. at Wadi Tharthar west of the Tigris and again to 300 ft. at the Euphrates, rises to more than 3150 ft. at mile 451 on the central Arabian steppe along the south line and to more than 2500 ft. at mile 466 along the north line. On crossing the rift valley of the Jordan River south of Galilee, it drops abruptly below 850 ft. below sea level, requiring the use of extra heavy 8-in. pipe and a relief station to reduce the pressure. A picked group of American welders, under H. S. Austin, of the Ajax Pipe Line Co., laid the line. It is coated, wrapped, and buried 30 in. beneath the surface in solid rock along much of the route. It crosses four large rivers and wide stretches of alkaline soils. Twelve pumping stations are employed, three of which are double east of the bifurcation. The Cliff Springs prospect in the northern part of the Slate Range Wilderness Study Area (WSA) contains only minor amounts of gold and silver. Clay near this prospect contains insufficient aluminum to be of economic interest, although alunite claims are recorded in the vicinity. Mineralized rock at the Crescent Mine adjacent to the WSA contains gold, silver and lead occurrences. The host rock may be present in the extreme southwestern part of the WSA, which is covered by alluvium. Substantial sand and gravel deposits are present but these occurrences are remote from markets. Much of the USA is underlain by volcanic rocks and alluvium and consequently the mineral resource potential there remains unknown.

Devido à complexidade dos minérios itabiríticos, sua caracterização é necessária, com ênfase em microestrutura. Muito usado é o microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), com microanalisador químico por dispersão de energia (EDS). Métodos computadorizados/automatizados de análise mineralógica e microestrutural, incluindo a liberação dos minerais, têm sido propostos, usando MEV-EDS. Um desses sistemas analíticos é o MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyser), que usa análise de imagens de elétrons retroespalhados (BSE) e espectros de raios-X (EDS) na identificação dos minerais, em secções polidas de partículas de minérios. Assim, geram-se mapas de composição microestrutural, com informações importantíssimas como liberação, associações minerais e análises modais. Há grande significado estatístico, pois vários milhares de partículas podem ser analisadas. Estudaram-se 4 amostras de minérios de ferro do Quadrilátero Ferrífero, MG, com graus diferentes de complexidade microestrutural. As faixas granulométricas (-0,500+0,300 mm e -0,300+0,212 mm) foram estudadas por difração de raios-X, espectrometria Mössbauer e MLA. Pelos métodos instrumentais, os minerais abundantes foram quartzo e hematita, obviamente; também foram identificados goethita, gibbsita e magnetita, minoritários; em geral, os dados do MLA foram consistentes com esses. O quartzo se encontra liberado em 3 amostras, acima de 90%; a exceção é a amostra APV4 com liberação de 60%, onde o quartzo está associado a hematita (principalmente) e goethita.

The product sizing and tonnage from a grinding circuit are the end result of a series of linked size reduction stages which always involve: fragmentation in mining; degradation in transport of ore; crushing and finally grinding. A case study is presented which illustrates the substantial effect on autogenous mill throughput of different mining practice. It is shown that it is possible to model each of the size reduction steps of fragmentation, degradation, crushing and grinding. The way in which this predictive capability is used is dependent on the operating constraints of each mine-mill combination.

Shortly after Asarco Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division from Kennecott in 1986, the company began an expansion program to increase copper production. The Bechtel Corp. oversaw engineering procurement and construction management for a new in-pit crusher, overland conveyor system and concentrator facility. Construction started in May 1990 on these facets of the expansion project. The concentrator was commissioned in February 1992. The Ray concentrator uses a single-line, semiautogenous grinding circuit (SAG) with a design through¬put of 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd). In the early 1960s, Kennecott conducted pilot plant grind tests of Ray mine ores to determine their amenability to SAG and autogenous grinding methods. Those tests, though, were not followed up. During 1973 and 1982, Kennecott conducted additional pilot testing on some of the softer ore types. In 1989, Asarco ran a final series of SAG pilot grinding tests at Lakefield Research, which became the basis of the new Ray concentrator grinding circuit. Even though pilot test work demonstrated that some of the Ray ores gave satisfactory results during the autogenous grinding tests, the SAG option was selected for the primary comminution device. Due to the wide range of mineralogies encountered in the Ray ore body, selective mining and blending of these ores would be required to achieve the necessary production efficiencies and throughput rates using an autogenous grinding circuit.

"The use of liquid copper as a medium for zinc extraction has been used in the Warner Process as a method of processing zinc-lead sulphide ore. The recovery of zinc metal is based on the reaction:ZnS(s) + 2Cu(l) = Zn(g) + Cu2S(l)In this method, thermodynamic and phase equilibria investigations of the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems are of importance and form the basis for the liquid sulphide phase which appears as a product and is used as a solvent in the Warner Process. Phase relations in the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary systems were determined experimentally at 1473°K to provide a fundamental basis for the new zinc smelting process. The results show that the solid solubility of ZnS in the two systems is very small (2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in FeS, 4 wt% ZnS in Cu2S for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; less than 0.5 wt% ZnS in both PbS and Cu2S for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). The Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS in the liquid mixtures and the vapour pressure of zinc over the matte in both systems is relatively large (?° = 7.7 – 15.8, Pzn(atm) = 0.088 – 1.026 for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; ?° = 8.9 – 12.9, PZn(atm) = 0.075 – 0.214 for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). On the FeS-ZnS join, the only phases detected are FeS and iron-rich sphalerite (Zn, Fe)S. The binary join mixture occurs at about 92 wt% FeS-8 wt% ZnS at 1473°K. Electron microprobe examination of the quenched samples indicate about 47 wt% to 48 wt% FeS in sphalerite and about 2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in the iron sulphide phase. On the Cu2S-ZnS join, microprobe analysis reveals that the maximum solubility is 4 wt% Zn in liquid Cu2S and 3.6 wt% Cu in solid ZnS. In the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary system, microprobe analysis of the quenched samples indicate on average, 5 wt% ZnS in the liquid phase region. The only phases detected on the PbS- ZnS join are ZnS and PbS. The eutectic phase contains, on average, 13 wt% ZnS. The phase relationships, very low solid solubilities of zinc sulphide in the liquid mixtures of both Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems, coupled with the high Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS as well as the high vapour pressure of zinc over matte all favour the partitioning of zinc metal into the vapour phase. This new process is cost effective and bypassesthe expensive and tedious conventionaltechnique of zinc production involving oxidationof the sulphide ore by roasting followed bya reduction process to extract the zinc. Theresults indicate that a new zinc smelting technologyusing the Warner Process would bemore efficient and preferable over the traditionalmethods of zinc extraction."

The occurrence of dusts in underground workings creates many difficult and, in some instances, contradictory and conflicting problems for workers, operators, and all others interested in health and safety in mining and tunneling. Moreover, there are many misconceptions both as to the actual effect of most dusts which may be encountered in underground work and as to remedial or alleviating measures. Although the harmfulness of mine dusts to health of miners has been mentioned by man; writers in ancient times, much of our really authentic knowledge of the effect of underground dusts upon health or safety in both coal and metal mines has been pained during the past 30 or 35 years. There has been, however, a considerable amount of generalizing from some local condition or occurrence or theory rather than arriving at conclusions after extended studies and observations made not only in mines and tunnels but also in town, camps, and plants, and comprising date on as many different mining and tunneling localities, conditions, etc., as could be secured with reasonable expenditure of time or money. This paper dives sortie observations based on the writer's 30 odd years of experience in and around both coal and metal mines, including approximately 20 years? close study of dust disease with detailed surveys and reports on dust occurrence and effects in considerably more than 100 mines in probably 20 States of the Union. The observatio are those of an engineer and in many respects conflict the with "going" ideas of doctors, pathologists, and others who have written on dust disease. Were the word dust is used in this p: per in connection with respiratory disease, it refers to solid particles which float or can float in the air breathed by workers. Although these particles are usually dry, they may be wet; in general, their dimensions are so small as to be invisible to the nailed eye. Dusts in coal mines which may be involved in the initiation or extension of explosions, are generally thought to be those which are smaller than 20-mesh in size but chiefly finer than 20-mesh; coal-mine dusts which are harmful to health of workers have essentially the same general physical characteristics as other dusts, but usually consist of smaller particles.

Drilling slurry has become an effective aid to the construction of drilled shafts in caving and/or waterbearing soils. Historically, drilling slurry made of bentonitic clay and water was first used in the US in water well drilling as early as 1889. In coastal Texas drilled shaft contractors began using slurry, often made of on-site clay mixed with potable water, in the years following World War II, on a relatively routine basis. This type of slurry was used to "process" boreholes, in which the borehole was drilled "in the dry" until water or unstable soil was encountered, after which water and on-site clay were introduced into the borehole and mixed in place with the auger or other drilling tool. Drilling then continued under a slurry consisting of the uncontrolled mixture of clay and water until the excavation had reached a relatively impermeable and cohesive material. At this point, a steel casing was dropped into the hole and sealed into the lower stratum of impermeable geomaterial (soil or rock). The slurry inside the casing was bailed or pumped out, drilling continued to plan depth in the dry, a reinforcing cage was set in the partially cased borehole, concrete was placed and the casing was withdrawn. Some soil-slurry was undoubtedly trapped between the casing and the borehole wall, but the quality of that slurry was usually of no concern, because engineers of the period usually viewed drilled shafts as nothing more than deeply buried footings. Any unejected slurry would only serve to lower side shearing resistance, not yet considered in design, but would have no effect on end bearing. En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe la ejecución del proyecto a través del uso de túneles, chimeneas y trocha en superficie, reemplazando la os volquetes y camiones. Asimismo, el proyecto desarrolla la ejecución del túnel en forma convencional a través del metraje, logrando un control estricto de los tiempos empleados en cada operación unitaria, la utilización adecuada de los recursos, coordinación de los trabajos a realizarse y los servicios requeridos.

Acerbrag es una empresa que produce aceros para la industria de la construcción teniendo en su gama los aceros de medio carbono para la fabricación de barras conformadas de dureza natural para armaduras en estructuras de hormigón. El objetivo de este trabajo es encontrar criterios de ventanas de trabajos operacionales y de control para la manufactura de aceros con buenas propiedades mecánicas en términos de resistencia y tenacidad. Este paper muestra los resultados de los trabajos realizados en las diferentes áreas productivas para conseguir un producto final con mayor resistencia a altas exigencias en servicio, además, reporta diferentes aspectos del proceso de manufactura del producto que van desde el ajuste de la composición química del acero, incluyendo criterios de propiedades mecánicas objetivos, criterios de calidad interna mostrando la microestructura de la barra antes y después de los cambios y finalmente la calidad dimensional y superficial de la barra nervurada, este último potenciando la falla prematura del material. Todos estos cambios, se ven reflejados finalmente en la performance de la barra, sometida a los nuevos criterios de exigencia en los ensayos mecánicos.

IN discussing the art of the goldsmith, it is apparent that it is an art requiring skill. He who wishes to be acclaimed a good master therein must be a good universal master in several arts, for the different kinds of work that come to his hands to be done are infinite. Those who work in gold and silver must outdistance all other craftsmen in learning and achievement to the same degree that their materials outdistance other metals in nobility. Therefore, it is necessary first of all to be a good designer, because design is the key that opens the doors not only to the goldsmith&apos;s craft but to all others. Then it is necessary that he understand melting and that he know well how to work with a hammer and how to use flat gravers and burins in engraving, as well as files and chisels. He must also possess certain secrets that are needful to the art, which in truth are parts of alchemy, such as softening gold when it is brittle and raw, coloring it when it has little color, soldering, enameling, working in niello, blanching, gilding, and an infinite number of things which must all be known in detail. But above all he who wishes to do this art well must be very patient in working, must know how to mould and how to proceed with the melt and with the file, hammer, chisel, or other implements for bringing his gold or silver work to the final state which he plans. The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2005 was estimated to be 653 kt (720,000 st). This was a 5-percent increase compared with 2004. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $179 million in 2005. Production was from six companies with 12 processing facilities in four states. California and Nevada were the principal producing states. They accounted for about 70 percent of U.S. production in 2005. U.S. diatomite exports were about 144 kt (159,000 st). Imports were negligible. The internal structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an excellent raw material for filtration, absorbent and filler applications. Filtration, especially the purification of beer, liquors and wine and the cleansing of greases and oils, continued to be the largest end use for diatomite. Other applications include the removal of microbial contaminants, such as bacteria, protozoa and viruses in public water systems, and the filtration of human blood plasma. The use of diatomite as fillers and in pharmaceutical applications, including the filtration of human blood plasma, continues to increase as has its use as an insecticide base and as pozzolan. The relative rank of end uses of diatomite were filter aids, 75 percent; fillers, 11 percent; absorbents, 7 percent and other (mostly cement manufacture), 7 percent.

Occurrence of Uranium1.0.1. Uranium is widely distributed in nature. Sedimentary rocks contain less than igneous or metamorphic rock s and as the outer 10 miles of the earth&apos;s crust is composed of 95 per cent igneous and 5 per cent sedimentary rock, it has been estimated that about 1.3 x 1014 tons of uranium exist in the earth&apos;s crust.1.0.2. It is not surprising, therefore, that radiation has existed naturally in the ear h ever since the beginning of time. It is found in such places as:(1) non-uranium mines;(2) houses not close to or connected to uranium mines;(3) ground-water tables supplying drinking water to large populations.1.0.3. All mines do not necessarily have abnormal radiation in them, but it is possible for many mines to have abnormal levels of radiation. Therefore, all underground mining operations should be tested for radiation."
