This paper deals with the evolution of Canadian shaft sinking technology over the last 15 years. Most, if not all, shaft excavation projects in Canada prior to 1990 were sunk using traditional benching methods with labour intensive equipment. In the late-1980s, J S Redpath Limited of North Bay, Ontario, Canada, were contracted to deepen the shaft at Atomic Energy of Canada LimitedÆs Underground Research Laboratory (URL) located in southern Manitoba. The laboratoryÆs role was underground hydrological and geomechanical research, so the project offered both time and opportunity to conduct additional experiments while sinking. The offshoot of the research program was the true birth of the Canadian version of full-face, long round shaft sinking technology. Throughout the 1990s, this sinking method has been further refined over a number of shafts. The results have been faster sinking rates, a safer work environment and an overall improvement in project economics.

This report presents the results of laboratory mineral evaluations conducted by the federal Bureau of Mines under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Bureau a! Ships, U. S. Department of the Navy. The major purpose of this investigation was to examine and evaluate zirconium minerals representing sizeable deposits in an effort to locate com¬mercial sources of high-hafnium ores. Although determination of the hafnium content was the principal objective, each of the zirconium minerals also was analyzed for combined zirconium-hafnium oxide, silica, uranium, thorium, yttrium, and cerium. The general laboratory procedure involved microscopic examination of the test samples, concentration of the hafnium-bearing zirconium mineral by standard laboratory techniques, and analysis of the derived concentrate by quantitative microscopic, chemical, and X-ray spectrographic methods. Of the several hundred samples tested under this program, 147 are discussed in this report, including 94 from domestic occurrences and 53 from widespread foreign sources.

This report is a compilation of the results of preliminary tests on ores containing scheelite (calcium tungstate). In most of the ores, scheelite was the only value; but several samples contained other values, such as gold, base metals, or, in one instance beryl. These investigations were made to assist the development of domestic tungsten resources by establishing satisfactory treatment methods suitable for small-scale operations. The samples were obtained through the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines and represent, for the most part, newly discovered deposits. A previous report2/ discussed laboratory test procedures. A less detailed description of test procedures is included in the present report. As is usual in an investigation of this type, only a limited amount of work was done on most of the samples to indicate the results that could be expected from simple treatment of the particular ore. The occurrence of scheelite and the texture of the minerals present differ greatly in individual ores and must be determined and considered in establishing such details of treatment as grinding to obtain optimum liberation of the minerals, the preferred type of gravity concentration, or possible further treatment by flotation.

This report summarizes all work performed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract J0377014, "Development and Evaluation of Noise Control Techniques for Taconite Processing Equipment." Three areas of taconite processing equipment, grinding mills, fine screens, and crusher screens have been investigated. Extensive noise and vibration measurements have been made on grinding mills in which the process parameters that affect mill noise have been identified, and the level of shell impact noise around the mill defined. A multiplexing telemetry system was used to obtain shell vibration measurements from a rotating mill. Mill noise control methods were investigated and a partial mill barrier was built and tested on a semi-autogeneous mill. A noise reduction of approximately 3 to 6 dBA was achieved on the falling side of the mill. The use of rubber mill liners on autogenous mills has been evaluated. The noise sources on fine screens have been quantified, and noise control treatments developed. Noise reductions of 11 to 13 dBA were achieved at positions around the fine screen and some in-service testing has been done. Noise measurents of crusher screens were obtained and noise control through resilient screen decks appears to hold the most promise. Additional benefits might be lower life-cycle cost, since the service life of resilient decks is claimed to be longer than steel.

The Sherritt Fort Site nickel refinery and fertilizer plant has been operating continuously since 1954. The ammonia leach process uses ammonia and sulphuric acid, producing nickel and cobalt and an ammonium sulphate byproduct. One of the features of an ammonium sulphate based process is the aggressive nature of ammonium sulphate to concrete and structural steel. After six decades of operation, portions of the structural steel and concrete at the Sherritt facility have become degraded. Infrastructure replacement programs started in earnest more than a decade ago with pipe racks and electrical infrastructure, and have now progressed into building steel. Replacing and repairing this infrastructure within the tight constraints of an operating plant poses several difficult challenges. This paper will outline the approach taken to accomplish this difficult work, and discuss key learnings from the ongoing program.

The ability to increase and maintain dragline productivity is a key mine driver for the Coal Creek Mine. The Coal Creek Mine is owned by Arch Coal Inc subsidiary Thunder Basin Coal Company; located near Gillette, WY. Coal Creek Mine overburden stripping is primarily accomplished by a BE-1570W walking dragline in combination with cast blasting and dozer assist for bench preparation. The two main variables impacting dragline performance are maintenance reliability and operator skill levels. The mine?s most recent process improvement efforts have focused on its most valuable asset - the operator. Various techniques have been used to reduce variability in the dragline operator?s digging performance. Utilization and communication of operator performance data, statistics, and video reviews have been of great value towards achieving this goal. Operators are given a chance to critique operational tendencies from a third-person point of view, and are also presented statistical feedback to support observations. From these sessions, operators gain knowledge as to what portions of the dig cycle can be improved in order to reduce cycle time and increase productivity. BACKGROUND The BE-1570W walking dragline was commissioned at Coal Creek in November 2006 after relocating from Arch of Wyoming located in southeast Wyoming. The first two years of operation the machine was performing simple side cast stripping due to the low ratio. Coal Creek Mine is a multiple seam operation with overburden thickness ranging from 24 to 140 feet. Early in 2009 the ratio increased to the point where transitioning to cast blast/extended bench stripping was necessary. The current mining conditions consist of a mixture of both stripping styles where the ratio allows. The dragline crews running the machine consist of a mixture of experience levels ranging from 30+ years to only a few years. It has been in this digging environment and slightly inexperienced personnel that the focus has been set for improvement in dragline performance.

Deposits of talc are known in many districts in Canada but at the present time active mining operations are reported only in Ontario . Here three companies are now operating, two of which, George H. Gillespie & Co. , Ltd. , and the Anglo- American Talc Co. , are at Madoc . The operations of the former company are probably the largest and best known in Canada . The writer , in his capacity as an engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , was permitted by this company to make an inspection of its mine and mill in June, 1920 , and study the methods employed . This information was desired for comparison with methods employed in the United States . The following description is based on observation made during this visit , supplemented by data supplied by the company .

"Zinc is a relatively abundant element which occurs as both high-grade sulphide ores {sphalerite ZnS) and oxide ores which the ancients collectively termed ""calamine"" (smithsonite ZnC03 and/ or hemimorphite Zn4Si201(0H)2 - H20 and/ or hydrozincite Zn5(C03) 2(0H)6). Although oxidic zinc is readily reduced by carbon, the process becomes thermodynamically viable only at - 1000°C, and at this temperature the zinc is released as a vapour (B.P. 907°C). Casual cooling of the vapour results in its re-oxidation by excess combustion air or even the carbon monoxide product of the reduction reaction. ZnO + C = C09,, + Zn vapom Only fairly rapid quenching of the zinc vapour and the isolation of the reduction products from the combustion gases will yield metallic zinc; these conditions were not produced deliberately until the advent of distillation technology. Until quite recently, the principal use of zinc was in brass manufacture; galvanized iron was not discovered until the 19th century and zinc casting alloys are a relatively recent invention. As will be seen, brass could be produced without recourse to a pure zinc intermediary, and the discovery of brass preceded that of zinc by many centuries. The purpose of this paper is to outline the discovery and early development of both zinc and brass with special reference to the European scene."

The use of extended workdays (regular shift lengths of 10 or 12 h (hour), while still maintaining a 4O-h workweek) in mining operations is attracting growing interest in the United States. There is very little doubt that extended workdays is a very popular alternative among the work force because of the significant increase in days off, including weekends, especially when compared with traditional rotation schedules of working seven straight shifts or having only one weekend off every 4 to 6 weeks. However, there are some serious concerns by management, workers, unions, and various governmental policymakers that working 10-or 12-h days may create an added risk of accidents and health problems. The U.S. Bureau of Mines reviewed the literature studies related to the safety and performance issues of extended workdays. This report presents a summary of those findings. The studies examined in this review are divided into three sections: (1) laboratory, (2) field, and (3) accident and injury analysis. In general, results are inconclusive. Studies have shown both positive and negative effects. It is concluded, therefore, that in industries such as mining where accidents are a serious concern, special measures and evaluation in the use of extended workdays be considered.

Cementing materials of mineral origin were well known to the ancients. Ordinary lime and gypsum plasters were the first to be recorded by historians. The next development was the discovery that certain limes would set under water, but the hydraulic property was not definitely attributed to the presence of clay in the limestone until many centuries later. The Romans advanced a step nearer to modern cement in the development of 'pozzuolana', a mixture of volcanic ash or trass with hydrated lime. The silicate of aluminium in the volcanic rock combined readily with the lime, forming a hydraulic mortar or cement which was widely used. Natural Cement In Europe (1) No further progress was made in the art of manufacturing cement for several centuries, during which the Roman Empire declined and passed away, and the Anglo-Saxon race slowly and painfully evolved through the Middle Ages an ever-increasing prestige. An Englishman, John Smeaton, is credited with the honour of the next important development, for he employed a little-known cementing material-natural cement-in constructing the Eddystone lighthouse in 1756. It was called 'natural' cement because it was made from a natural rock with no additions of other materials. The process consisted of calcining an argillaceous limestone at a comparatively low temperature and grinding the product to a fine powder. Care was exercised to keep the temperature low, and any material burned to the clinkering point was thrown away, although such material was, as learned at a later time, Portland cement.

"Mining worldwide and definitely in South Africa, is constantly under pressure to reduce its cost structure so as to sustain profitability. In underground gold mines where an open stope mining method is employed, dilution often has a significant effect on the viability of sustaining profits. Target Mine practices Open Stope mining Method and it was found that in some open stopes dilution was in excess of 10%, which has a significant impact on the sustainability of the mine.Dilution in excess of 10% can result in the reduction of the recovered grade from 5,5 to 4,5 grams per ton (g/t). The reduction of 1 g/t in recovered grade results in a potential loss of about ZAR21 Million per month bases on a gold price of ZAR240 000 per kilogram. Based on Life of Mine projections the potential loss of income could be as much as ZAR3,3 Billion. A reduction in dilution would have the opposite effect. There are a number of factors which affect dilution of which falls of ground in open stopes is a major contributor. The falls of ground can be attributed to a number of factors such as beam failure as a result of a larger than normal expected roof area (hydraulic radius too large), poor ground conditions, and poor blasting. The cost of damage to or loss of trackless equipment as a direct result of the falls of ground in open stopes, is very significant. The review of financial figures has indicated that this could be as high as ZAR491 million. This combined with the added cost of transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling and plant treatment costs of ZAR293 results in an estimated opportunity loss of ZAR784 million.Currently there is a significant amount of data available in the mining industry which could be effectively used to develop suitable back analysis techniques but to date this has not been used effectively. If dilution can have such an impact on current and future mining ventures then the optimization of back analyses for the prediction of dilution in open stoping could assist significantly in the reduction of dilution in massive open stopes. Rockmass classifications, geotechnical information, blast techniques, blast design, the stress strain environment and hydraulic radius all have an effect on, or play a role in the evaluation of dilution. Each of these factors will be taken into consideration to ultimately determine a measurable or calculated percentage of dilution in massive open stopes.The amount of overbreak in an open stope can be determined by subtracting the planned stope volume in m3 from the actual measured final stope volume in m3, which is obtained from the CMS (cavity monitoring system). This is in turn divided by the planned stope volume in m3 to determine the percentage overbreak. The CMS wireframe is imported into the geological model and its grade re-evaluated. From this the actual percentage dilution for this open stope can be determined. The dilution obtained can result in a major reduction of recovered grade for the open stope, but can also increase the recovered grade. The latter is normally the exception rather than the rule.When analysing data from Target mine the following was achieved:• Using 11 years of data a method of measuring and predicting the percentage dilution in open stoping was developed. This took into account rock mass quality, stress-strain state, and the hangingwall hydraulic radius (size of stope hangingwall exposed).• Implementation of this prediction method resulted in a reduction in falls of ground in open stopes. The benefit of this was a reduction in the damage to mechanised equipment resulting from less falls of ground which had a positive effect on the profit margins of the mine. As a direct result the recovered grade from the open stopes increased due to the reduction in the amount of dilution.• A design criterion, Dilution Stress-Strain Index (DSSI), was developed which allows the user to calculate, with certainty, the stability of the open stope and determine if m"

Globalisation and consolidation is resulting in the mining industry coming to be dominated by a small number of very large companies seeking to lever assets and knowledge to create wealth. As an important service provider to the mining industry, the minerals tertiary education sector needs to understand these global drivers and respond to them. However, it is under-resourced and its sustainability is under challenge in all Western countries. Through the establishment and funding of the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC), the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has provided a unique opportunity to build a national, world-class minerals tertiary education environment in Australia that can be sustained in the long-term. This paper reviews how the global changes occurring in the mining industry provide the model for what needs to occur in the minerals education sector and how MTEC is the logical vehicle to facilitate these changes. It concludes by suggesting that the time has come to integrate the minerals tertiary education providers into one business. Furthermore, the vision should be for a global mining education academy based around a virtual university capable of servicing the cultural diversity and continuing education needs of the global minerals industry.

Gypsum was first exploited as ?a commercial proposition in this province by the Union Mining Company which, in 1900 opened quarries on the east shore of Lake Manitoba, near the present site of Gypsumville. This company established a mill at the head of Portage Bay on the lake, and the manufactured plaster was carried by the companies boats to McArthur's siding on the Whitemouth river near Westbourne, Man., from which point it was distributed. In 1904 a reorganization took place and the Manitoba Gypsum Company Limited bought out the original company, and operated the original mill for about one year when it was destroyed by fire. There were many factors which rendered the operation of a mill at the quarries very difficult; lack of rail transportation for bringing in supplies, and the impossibility of local power development made manufacturing costs very high. Satisfactory distribution could not be affected because of water transportation and poor terminal facilities at McArthur's siding. For these reasons the new mill was built at Winnipeg, where cheaper power and better distributing facilities permitted the industry being placed in a better position. The company continued to bring the gypsum rock by steamer to Totogan, from which point it was transported by rail to Winnipeg. This period was one of steady expansion as the product became better known and more universally accepted as a wall finishing material. Unfortunately, in 1909, this new mill was destroyed by fire, causing a serious set-back to the company, at a time when the steady growth of the western market gave every promise of the industry being placed on a profitable basis.

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. The Chagres Smelter is located 80 kilometres north of Santiago - Chile, in the middle of an agricultural valley which is also one of the poorest districts in the country. This condition sets the main focus for the smelter's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes, which ultimately aim at building self sustainable social and economic capital in accordance with the local capacities. With the help of Anglo American's SEAT (Socio Economic Assessment Toolbox), a corporately developed instrument designed to help the operations understand the needs of the communities and the impacts of those operations, the Chagres Smelter implemented several programmes, such as the CETTA (Experimental and Applied Technology Transfer Centre) programme. This project started in 2003, and consists of creating a centre for the transfer of sustainable techniques and skills for the small agricultural and livestock producers that live in the rural areas near the Chagres Smelter. Its main impacts are: Improved production quality (goat cheese and bee honey) and access to relevant markets, improved training and self-sustainability levels of producers, enhanced socio-economic level of the District's inhabitants by improving their income earning opportunities and technical knowledge, creation and promotion of a local brand as a symbol of quality products from the valley and a positive environmental impact of good breeding and native flora protection practices in the area. Other relevant social programmes are the 'Environmental Strivers', which created a recycling centre in the community; and the 'Beautiful Valley" project, which provides management knowledge and skills to local youngsters and leaders who can contribute to finding solutions for local environmental needs.

The occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopotel' as a building cement.l DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de las Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 it. deep was :drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the,, Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said to have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State of Vera Cruz. This paper presents an overview of recent developments in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process to provide the background for a more detailed analysis of environmental and social constraints that the Heavy Mineral Mining industry has encountered over the past decade. Four cases studies are reviewed to provide a context for further analysis and identification of cross cutting environmental and social issues that either resulted in the projects not proceeding, or in the Australian case study, places existing operations under significant pressure from anti-mining lobbyists. The Xolobeni project, from the Eastern Cape in South Africa, is presented as the primary case study because it is recent, topical, and accessible; and raised numerous issues related to mining in a sensitive environment. A proposal to mine an area adjacent to the Okefenokee swamps in 1997 was also met with strong opposition from various environmental groups in Georgia, USA. This case study is briefly reviewed to further understand what ultimately resulted in the project not proceeding. Opposition to mining at North Stradbroke Island is reviewed to identify current issues more applicable to a developed country. A further review of a strategic assessment undertaken at Wavecrest, Eastern Cape, South Africa is provided in support of possible solutions to the challenges identified in the case studies. Important common themes were identified, including in some cases unfortunate timing of the environmental studies, but in all cases opposition was due to ecological sensitivity, landscape quality and sense of place. In one case study limitations to the EIA process included inadequate detail in the specialist investigations and insufficient information on mitigation. In all cases public participation was a limitation. It was either insufficient; flawed through possible bias; too ‘top down’ and required engagement with mobilised, motivated lobbyists. There was also insufficient investigation of social impacts, particularly amongst rural communities directly affected by a project. Generally alternatives were inadequately considered, a recognised limitation of project level EIA. It is concluded that the EIA process should be started as early as possible (at prefeasibility), and that investigations should be expanded from a typical fatal flaw assessment to one that applies methodologies used in strategic assessment. In particular, opportunities and constraints of the natural and social environment should be assessed in the context of the mining option as well as other options, to allow for a more meaningful assessment of alternatives. Public participation must form an important part of this initial study, despite the potential risks associated with public engagement at an early stage in the project. The application of the IFC Performance Standards; and expanding the scope of the EIA into an environmental, social and health impact assessment will lead to a more rigorous procedure, and result in more defensible products which could successfully unlock the key to the resources in these sensitive areas.
