Dentre os materiais que representam a crescente e alarmante quantia de resíduos sólidos gerados nos últimos anos, destacam-se polímeros como o poliestireno expandido (EPS), material largamente depositado no ambiente natural. Propõe-se, portanto, seu uso na composição de uma resina veículo para tinta, em adição ao óleo essencial de casca de laranja. Assim, estabelece-se o objetivo de avaliar as propriedades do fluido resultante e da película seca, incluindo sua interação com diferentes superfícies de madeira. Observa-se que a resina possui viscosidade elevada e tendência ao comportamento não-newtoniano pseudoplástico, bem como alta homogeneidade e mais de 95% de adesão a superfícies de pau-marfim. Avaliações da resina aplicada em MDF sugerem que se deve evitar a aplicação em faces fibrosas de blocos e placas deste tipo de madeira, dado que, ao contrário de sua superfície lisa, não há formação de revestimento visível mesmo após a aplicação sucessiva de três camadas de resina. Conclui-se que, considerando a aplicação de resina em superfícies lisas de madeira, há viabilidade técnica de produção de tinta a partir da resina veículo em estudo.

"Sea water flotation is becoming a reality due to shortages of fresh water. To better understand the mechanisms involved in sea water flotation, we have studied the effects of KCl and MgCl2 on the surface forces present in the wetting films of water formed on hydrophobic surfaces. The measurements have been conducted using the force apparatus for deformable surface (FADS), which is capable of measuring both the surface and hydrodynamic forces responsible for bubble-particle interactions. The results obtained with the gold surfaces hydrophobized with butanethiol (C4SH) show that the wetting films of Ultrapure water do not rupture despite the relatively high water contact angle (??= 80o) and the presence of a long-range hydrophobic force with a decay length (D) of 25 nm in the film. The film is metastable with its equilibrium thickness (he) at 140 nm, where the repulsive double-layer force is equal in magnitude to the capillary force as shown in Figure 1. The film loses its metastability and ruptures in a 10-2 M KCl solution, in which the double-layer force decreases substantially due to the decrease in Debye length (?-1) while the decay length of the hydrophobic force remains as large as 23 nm.The effects of MgCl2 has also been studied using a C4SH-coated gold surface with a water contact angle of 87o. It has been found that in a 10-4 M solution double-layer force decreases due to the decrease in the negative ?-potentials and Debye length, which should help destabilize the wetting film. However, the film remains stable due to the decrease in the decay length of the long-range hydrophobic force from 45 nm in Ultrapure water to 14 nm in the MgCl2 solution. Thus, the results obtained in the present investigation support the view that the difficulties in sea water flotation may be due to the presence of MgCl2 rather than the presence of NaCl in sea water (Ramos, et al., 2013)."

For some years the Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa has been engaged in the development and application of computer programmes to aid in the solution of rock mechanics problems. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce some of the programmes having general applicability. A system capable of predicting stresses and displacements induced by large-scale tabular excavations is discussed. A finite element programme especially designed for handling layered continuum problems, and which is being used extensively has been supplemented by an automatic mesh generation facility that reduces problem preparation times considerably. Some typical applications of these programmes are described. An entirely new approach, potentially capable of performing linear three-dimensional continuum analysis at practical cost is introduced.

Numerous asbestos occurrences are known, and the Cassiar Mine in Northern British Columbia has been a major producer since 1952. The Kutcho Creek deposit is a large medium-grade deposit of potential economic interest. OF THE numerous British Columbia asbestos occurrences, only one mine exists. Another property, at Kutcho Creek, may be commercially viable. Cassiar Mine, in the northern part of the province, has been producing high-quality asbestos since 1952 and is described elsewhere in this volume. The Kutcho Creek property is situated north of Letain Lake about 125 km southeast of Cassiar Mine. The Kutcho Creek asbestos deposit comprises zoned chrysotile fibre veins in a well jointed and locally sheared serpentinite sill. The sill intrudes, more or less concordantly, a sequence of Devonian to Mississippian argillaceous Industrial Minerals in Canada metasedimentary, calcareous, and volcanic rocks. The light to dark green serpentinite contains crossfibre chrysotile veins that are usually less than 1 cm in width but up to several metres in length. Typical sections in exploration drillholes grade between 2.5 and 3.0 per cent fibre. According to the last assessment report submitted, test results indicate that the Kutcho Creek property may contain a large, medium-grade asbestos deposit of potential economic interest.

FOr the purpose of obtaining some first-hand data in regard to the shooting clown of coal in bituminous 'nines, it was the writer's good fortune to be employed as a shot-firer for almost one year. In all, 6,020 shots were fired by him during this period. All of the work was clone in what is known as the South Main section of the No. 2 Mine of the Ellsworth Collieries Co., Ellsworth, Pa., a subsidiary of the Lackawanna Steel Co. Position of Shot-firing in the Cycle of Operations The established practice of the Ellsworth Collieries Co. calls first for the undercutting of the coal by electric chain machines across the face of the entry or room. This is followed by replacing any posts removed by the machine-runners, or the setting of new posts or timber, as may be required. After this has been done the machine cuttings are loaded into cars. Then the coal is spragged, and a shot hole drilled to the depth of the undercut. Next in order, the shot-firer loads the hole and fires the charge. The working place is then cleaned up, timbered if necessary, the sides and face squared up, and loose material taken down. The face is again ready to be undercut.

THE important developments within the past few years in electrochemistry, in particular in the electric furnace art, in electrometallurgy and in the methods of combatting corrosion are to be the subjects of my discussion. Fig.1 shows the rise of the electric steel furnace industry in this country and Canada. Many prophesied that the electric furnace was largely a war baby and that the sudden rise in the industry, due to the outbreak of the great war, would be fol-lowed by an equally sudden drop after the armistice. However, the curve shows that this, prophecy was not correct; the number of furnaces in operation in this country and Canada has continued to increase steadily, so that at the end of 1925 there were over 525 electric steel furnaces in successful operation. What does this mean? It has a big significance, namely that the en-tire steel industry has been revolutionized, to a certain extent, that we have been able to introduce certain alloys and steel products that we were unable to pro-duce before. On the table is. a sample of metallic chro-mium, analyzing more than 98 per cent chromium, made in the electric furnace. Before the war, the only commercial method of producing chromium was that by the Goldschmidt process. If chromium oxide is mixed with granulated aluminum, a violent reaction occurs, resulting in the production of metallic chro-mium. However, the price of chromium so made will always be above that of the raw material, which at the present time is about 27 cents a pound.. Furthermore, the chromium metal could only be turned out in small quantities, whereas in the electric furnace, large quan-tities, ton masses, can be produced today. The advent of chromium produced in the electric furnace has brought about an entire new phase in the alloy indus-try. The fuel-fired furnaces can turn out a low-carbon chromium steel that runs about 3 per cent chromium, whereas in the electric furnace, 60 per cent ferro-chromium is daily produced in large masses with almost entire elimination of carbon. It is difficult indeed to turn out ferrochrome very low in carbon. New steels are being produced today, for example the steel with which everyone has become familiar within the 'last few years, "stainless steel,". and which would have been impossible without the low-carbon ferrochrome. The elimination of most of the carbon made it possible to roll the chromium steels into thin sheets and manu-facture them into knife blades.

Crushing plants (multiple stage) are an integral part of most conventional comminution circuits (ball mill, rod mill - ball mill). Although conventional circuitry is now the design exception, there are still many older, and some newer plants that include crushing in the process flowsheet. In most of these installations the operating objective is to maximize throughput at some minimum product size, in an effort to balance the comminution load between crushing and grinding. To achieve this goal, while avoiding production losses due to overloads, generally requires the use of automatic control strategies. This paper reviews the crushing plant control problem and describes several approaches that have been successfully implemented in different plants.

DURING the last quarter-century it has gradually become apparent that the science of metallog-raphy must deal not alone with the constitu-tion and structure of metals and alloys, but with the correlation of chemical composition, constitution, thermal treatment, mechanical treatment, structure, and temperature, with their physical and mechani-cal properties. The development of technique in microscopy, etch-ing, thermal analysis, and general physical measure-ments has been no small factor in the progress of metal-lographic science. This development has been largely incident to the study of alloy systems and impurities in metals and alloys. About 270 binary, 40 ternary and 3 quarternary alloy systems have been investigated to date. Only preliminary investigations have been made on most of these systems, and much work remains to be done in this direction. In Vol. I of The Metallographist, January, 1898, we find the following definition of metallography as offered by F. Osmond: Metallography, generally, speaking, signifies the structure of metals and of their alloys. The science is not confined to the use of a single instrument, the microscope for instance, whose manipulation requires a certain training, giving rise, therefore, to a specialty and to specialists. In reality we begin by using our eyes in the examination of metals and when they show us all that they can see, we provide them with lenses of increasing magnifying power, until we are stopped, at about 2000 diam¬eters, before the mysteries of the ultra-microscopic. But the naked eye and the optical instruments are only an incomplete means of investigation; They take, so to speak, a first inventory; the indications furnished by the visible characters, form, color or luster must be controlled by chemical analysis, micro-chem¬istry and crystallography, by the determination of physical and mechanical constants, in a word, by all the available means for the differentiation and identification of bodies. In the same issue of The Metallographist, A. Sauveur epitomizes the results in the field of metallography up to that time (1898). The last decade has witnessed an activity in metallurgical researches which has probably no parallel in the history of the science, owing to the strictly scientific spirit with which they have been conducted. Scientists in all metallurgical countries have taken hold of the industrial metals, and are applying to them the scientific methods of investigation of this highly scientific age. Witness the work of Sorby, Abel, Muller, Osmond, Howe, Martens, Arnold, Wedding, Roberts-Austen, H. Le-Chatelier, Charpy, Ledebur, Behrens, De Benneville, and others. The metals and their alloys are being dissected, and the high-power objective, that wonderful instrument of modern researches, is revealing to us their intimate structure, throwing a flood of light upon their constitution, chemical and physical, the prac-tical as well as the theoretical value of which could hardly be overestimated. Their physics, hitherto much neglected, is being minutely investigated. Their thermal behavior is being ascer-tained with a precision rendered possible only by the extremely delicate pyrometer of H. LeChatelier. Their magnetic, prop-erties, their electric conductivity, their diffusion, their physical and mechanical properties in general, are being investigated with a degree of accuracy never before attained. The chemist is energetically at work, in his endeavor to establish the true chemical relation between the metals and their impurities, and successful excursions are being taken into the, domain of their proximate compositions. As Mr. Osmond has aptly said, modern science is treating the industrial metal like a living organ-ism, and we are led to study its anatomy, i.e., its physical and chemical constitution; its biology, i.e., the influence exerted upon its constitution by the various treatments, thermal and mech-anical, to which the metal is lawfully subjected; and its path-ology, -i.e., the action of impurities and, defective treatments upon its normal constituents."

The paper reviews the restrictions imposed by the Department of Mines (now the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs) on the surface use of ground that has been undermined at shallow depths (down to a depth of244m). The reasons for the restrictions are discussed, with special reference to the early records kept by the Department of Mines on subsidence and fracture of the surface. A discussion of the nature of the strata overlying the ore-body, and the effect of undermining, is followed by a detailed account of investigational work, particularly since 1970, on the stability of shallowly undermined ground. The significance of the data collected during the investigations is considered next, with special reference to the social and economic implications. These are so farreaching, that it is proposed that the already flexible approach of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs in considering what structures may be built on undermined ground should become even more flexible. To this end, the appointment of a Commission is proposed to collect as much information as possible on the stability of ground undermined at shallow depth, and to revise the current overrestrictive conditions or guide lines that are in use.

Muskat's depletion performance equation is here derived considering the expansion behavior of the reservoir hydrocarbon system and a simple fractional-flow equation. This nietkod of derivation leads logically to the two extensions that follow. The first of these is concerned with gravity segregation in a depletion-drive reservoir. The second is concerned with including an empirically determined tern? for water influx in the performance equation. The more general equation for gravity segregation when there is a primary gas cap and empirically-determined water influx is stated for completeness. These equations have been found useful in reservoir performance calculations in Eastern Venezuela. A discussion on the methods of solving these equations follows, and considers firstly the effect of taking finite intervals in the numerical integration, and sec-ondly, methods of incorporating the time functions involved in segregation in with the expansion behavior. The paper concludes with a brief general discussion on further extensions to the depletion performance equation. INTRODUCTION The two fundamental sources of energy by which oil is produced from a reservoir result from pressure depletion inside the boundaries of the reservoir and fluid encroachment across the boundaries of the reservoir. The wells in either case form low pressure outlets through which oil and gas may be produced by the expansive force of the reservoir fluids and associated encroaching fluids. When the reservoir pressure is higher than the bubble-point pressure of the oil, so that there is no free gas in the reservoir, these expansive forces are the only ones available for the production of oil. However, when the reservoir pressure is less than the bubble-point pressure of the oil, free gas is vaporized as the pressure falls. With both oil and free-gas phases present, the additional forces of gravity and capillarity may operate on the gas-oil system, as they have previously operated on the oil-interstitial water system. Gravity tends to segregate the free gas from the oil due to their density difference. Capillarity opposes and eventually balances gravity as the more extreme free gas and oil saturations are reached, preventing the independent move- ment of free gas until it is above a certain saturation, and the independent movement of oil when it is below a certain saturation. The type of depletion performance equation chosen for predicting the future performance of a reservoir depends on the amount of past history available. When the reservoir is somewhere past the halfway mark in depletion, some form of decline curve is often used. With less past history, material balance equations which incorporate empirical factors based on the past performance are often used. When, however, the amount of past history is small, the Muskat depletion performance equation will usually be used. The distinguishing feature of this type of equation is that empirical factors based on the over-all or macroscopic reservoir behavior are almost or entirely absent. Each parameter affecting the reservoir performance is ascribed an independent set of values based on measurements made on laboratory samples; that is, incorporating microscopic empirical factors. In establishing Muskat-type depletion performance equations, it is necessary to consider the reservoir as consisting of a number of associated blocks, in each of which the saturations and pressures may be considered uniform, and in each of which all substances have uniform pressure-volume characteristics. Thus, a primary gas cap can usually be considered as one block and an aquifer as another. Gravity segregation may be negligible for practical purposes when the rock and oil properties are adverse and/or the dip or thickness of the reservoir is too small. In this case the whole oil leg may be considered as one block, except in very large reservoirs. In very large reservoirs the fluid and rock properties may vary enough, particularly in the dip direction, for it to be necessary to divide the oil leg into a number of blocks, in each of which the relevant quantities may be considered uniform. When gravity segregation of the oil and free gas is not negligible, it is necessary to consider the space occupied by the initial oil leg as divided into two blocks, a secondary gas cap and an effective oil leg, in each of which saturations may be considered to be uniform. The total volume of these two blocks is thus constant, but the secondary gas cap grows continuously at the expense of the oil leg. CHEMICAL nitrogen and the "nitrates" of commercial significance are derived mainly from three basic sources: (1) the natural deposits in the form of nitrate-bearing earth and clay, which, being largely water-soluble, can exist only in the most arid portions of the earth; (2) coal, which yields not only nitrogen but also the additional by-product hydrogen required for the synthesis of ammonia and its compounds; (3) the atmospheric air, which contains 75.5 pct by weight of pure nitrogen gas. NATURAL NITRATE DEPOSITS Occurrence Although natural nitrate deposits consisting principally of the salts of sodium and potassium have been reported in Egypt, South Africa, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru and the USA, the only known natural nitrate resources of commercial importance are the vast deposits found in the Atacama, Tarapaca and Antofagasta regions of northern Chile, lying in a narrow strip 10 to 50 miles wide and roughly 450 miles long, between latitudes [19O] and [26OS]. In addition to yielding nitrates of sodium and potassium, these deposits are the source of the major portion of the world's supply of iodine. The nitrate-bearing ores known in Chile as caliche are variable in composition and may contain from 5 to 30 pct each of nitrate, chloride and sulphate. While the deposits are present chiefly in the form of the sodium salt, potassium, magnesium and calcium also occur in percent- ages from 0.1 to 5; usually as double salts with sulphate, which are but slightly soluble in nitrate leach solutions. These double salts are bloedite(Na2S04.MgS04.4H,0), glauberite (Na2S04.CaS04), polyhalite (K2SO4.- MgS04.2CaS04.2H20). Some deposits contain up to30 pct of their ni-

In order to achieve optimum results for money spent in construction of new projects there is a need for mining developers to pay greater attention to cost control. Control is achieved by establishing a frame of reference, a method of checking and a means of remedial action. The frame of reference is a well coded set of budget estimates which graduate into definitive estimates as design is completed, backed up by drawings, specifications and bills of quantities. The method of checking is provided by cost engineering and quantity surveying input, at both feasibility study and design and documentation stages. Remedial action follows if the checking process reveals a need. In large complex projects where construction completion time is often of prime importance, control of costs can sometimes be relegated to second place. To avoid this it may be necessary to include specialists in cost control in project management teams. Quantity surveyors are trained specifically in construction economics and can provide develop- ers and project engineers with valuable support at all stages of construction.

Very few data are available about production in this county. The amount mined was used locally, or shipped by river, until 1839 when the canal was completed to Dunnsburg. Only partial records for four years remain of canal shipments. Considerable coal was used locally by the iron works at Farrandsville for some years. Rail shipments started in 1861 and those shown are the estimated shipments of these mines as compared with the mines in other counties served by the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad, the total tonnages being given in the annual reports to the Auditor General. It is not likely that any coal used by the railroad is included in these figures. (Table 40.)

The Nation's steel industry is largely dependent on shipments of manganese from foreign sources for steel production. An adequate substitute for the manganese requirements of our present steel technology would improve our national self-sufficiency and also contribute substantially to the conservation of our manganese resources. As each of these objectives is a major interest of the Bureau of Mines, possible substitutes for manganese in steel were investigated. Titanium was selected as the most promising substitute because the published results of several investigations indicate that titanium would perform the most obvious function of the manganese in steel: The elimination of iron sulfide and its deleterious effects. The investigation involved extending the published data on titanium additions in steel to provide enough information for an accurate evaluation of the practical value of the substitute. Therefore, quantitative data were obtained on the partition of sulfur and carbon between iron and relatively small titanium additions.

"Several recent cases indicate that the Courts may be leaning toward a more favourable treatment of mine closing and related costs. In this article, we look at two recent cases, Burnco Industries Ltd. and Nomad Sand & Gravel Ltd. The former was heard before the Federal Court - Trial Division and the latter before the Tax Review Board.It appears that in certain situations mining companies may now be able to sustain current deductibility of estimated mine closing costs during the productive years of the mine, rather than waiting until either the date on which mining ceases or the reclamation and similar activities commence. This would be of great benefit to the mining industry, as waiting until the bitter end often means that there are no revenues available against which the expenses may be offset and, hence, no tax relief.IntroductionUnder the Income Tax Act in Canada, taxpayers are not permitted any deductions in respect of an outlay or expense in determining income from a business or property, except to the extent that such expenditures are made or incurred by the taxpayer for the purpose of gaining or producing income. In addition, no deductions are permitted for amounts transferred or credited to a reserve, contingent account or sinking fund except as expressly permitted by the Act.In large measure, these provisions are relevant to the mining industry to the extent that they determine the periods during which expenses may be charged against revenues for income tax purposes. Several recent cases have indicated that the Courts are leaning toward a more favourable treatment of accrued costs in the mining industry than was previously considered to be the case."

AN excerpt from the Odessa Isvestia Vechernia, dated April 24, 1927, and translated by P. Routzitzky, summarizes a report by Professor Preobragensky ad-dressed to the Russian Government. Professor Preo-bragensky writes in regard to newly discovered potash deposits in eastern European Russia. Near Solikamsk in the Perm district, about 100 miles east of the Ural mountains and on the Kama river, large deposits have been located and the belt has been traced southward about 25 miles. Subsequently the search for potash salts has been transferred to the Berezovsky district, near Nikolsk, on the Kosva river, about 70 miles north-east-of the city of Perm. Toward the end of March, 1927, at a depth of 800 ft., drilling at the Levensk salt works revealed potash salts in, definite strata. The bed has a thickness which extends from a depth of- 245 to 307 meters (latest data in middle of April, 1927) and has not been bottomed yet. Professor Preobragensky goes on to say that these operations have definitely, developed very large de-posits, the limits of which are still unknown. There is at least an implication that the reserves far exceed those of Stassfurt, Germany. For European use they are, of course, much less accessible, for by through rail they lie 1200 miles east of Petrograd. Further, no particulars are given as to the potash content. It is to be supposed that the salt occurs in the Permian beds that extend north and south along the west flank of the Ural mountains, as the localities mentioned .all lie within the area so mapped on the new geologic map of Russia issued by the Scientific and Technical Di-vision of the All-Russian Council of Soviets in 1922. It is interesting to note that these salt beds are of the same geologic age as those of 'the Stassfurt region and of the west Texas-New Mexico district, in which the U. S. Bureau of Mines is at present drilling.

Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

A construção naval sofreu nos últimos 40 anos várias mudanças de acordo com os diferentes cenários econômicos. O Brasil neste setor chegou a ocupar o segundo lugar na produção mundial, foi fortemente afetado pela crise recente. Diante desta conjuntura as empresas tem que otimizar seus processos visando um aumento na produtividade para se manter competitivas. A atividade da construção naval é complexa, tem várias etapas que geram interferências que muitas vezes impossibilitam trabalhos em paralelo. As chapas de aço que constituem as partes principais da embarcação, as estruturais, devem passar por um tratamento de preparação da superfície que inclui a sua pintura e proteção anticorrosiva, este é um dos processos mais críticos. Esta etapa além de demandar serviços muito especializados há ainda um aspecto agravante o ambiente confinado, que expõe os operários executantes a condições ergonômicas desfavoráveis proporcionando um rendimento baixo afetando diretamente a produtividade do processo. Este estudo realizou uma analise do processo e propôs as alterações nas etapas de fabricação eliminando os problemas proporcionando melhores condições de trabalho dessa forma minimizando o impactos ergonômicos, proporcionando redução de custo e aumento da produtividade.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts in the United States. The paper describes mining and ore recovery methods common to the Batesville manganese district, Independence County, Ark., and gives the costs of producing merchantable ore by three operators whose methods were more or less typical of those of many other local manganese producers. The operating costs reported were those of Leonard Baxter at mines on Brooks Hill for the calendar year 1958 and Arkansas Mining and Exploration Corp. at Section 16 mine and the Searcy group of mines and Miller-McGee Corp. at the Diener mine during the first 6 months of 1959. Manganese are was mined in the district as early as 1849 and almost continuously thereafter until August 1959, when termination of the Government's domestic manganese purchase program resulted in complete cessation of mining activity. During those years, production came from more than 189 mines and properties, of which only a few produced as much as 30,000 tons of merchantable ore.
