Froth flotation is the most widely-used method of separating fine coal, especially coal with coking properties. However, froth flotation is not efficient for treating ultrafine coal and coarse coal particles. Our previous fundamental test results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different particle size fractions of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50 mm inside diameter column and a 152 mm inside diameter column. It was found that nanobubbles that were either directly formed on or subsequently attached to the surface of coal particles during coal froth flotation process improved flotation efficiency. The use of nanobubble in a bank of mechanical cells flotation and column flotation significantly increased the flotation recovery at a given product grade. Nanobubbles increased the flotation rate constants of different coal particle sizes. The presence of nanobubbles in flotation slurry could extend the lower and the upper particle size limits for effective coal flotation.

"Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) are major products of the activated alveolar macrophage and serve as key mediators of lung injury. In order to determine if the synthesis ofTXA2 and the release ofTNFa are associated, the production of these inflammatory agents by the human alveolar macrophage (AM), as a result of activation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was assessed in the absence and presence of the thromboxane synthase inhibitors UK 38,485 (Dazmegrel) and OKY 046. UK 38,485 and OKY 046 inhibited both LPS-stimulated TXA2 production and TNFa release in a dose-dependent manner. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production was not increased by UK 38,485 or OKY 046. Neither LPS nor UK 38,485 had any effect on LT84 production by AM. Neither UK 38,485 or OKY 046 had any effect on LPS-stimulated interleukin-I beta release. However, the TXA2 mimetic, U46619, did not stimulate TNFa release by AM either in the absence or presence of UK 38,485. These findings suggest that 1) UK 38,485 and OKY 046 are inhibitors of both TXA2 production and TNFa release by activated human AM, 2) UK 38,485 probably does not exert its inhibitory action on TNFa release through effects on eicosanoid production and 3) the possibility that TNFa- and TXA2-induced lung injury may be subject to amelioration by imidazole-based compounds should be further evaluated.IntroductionTumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa), produced by monocytes and macrophages, is a potent peptide mediator of lung injury (1,2). The exaggerated release of TNFa has been implicated in the etiology of acute lung reactions such as septic shock of bacterial or viral origin (3,4). The role of TNFa is expressed primarily through its ability to activate a variety of cell types within the lung environment including polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs, ref. 5), type II epithelial cells (6) and fibroblasts (7). The role of lipid mediators in lung disease has also been extensively characterized (1). In particular, the relationship between pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis and the production of oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (here termed ""eicosanoids"") appears to be a key factor in a variety of disease processes in the lung (8). The alveolar macrophage (AM) synthesizes primarily prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and leukotriene 84 (LT84, ref. 9). These eicosanoids have been shown to produce a variety of effects in the lung including bronchial smooth muscle dilatation (PGE2, ref. 10), vascular smooth muscle contraction and platelet aggregation (TXA2, ref. 11) and oedema and immune cell extravasation (LT84, ref. 12)."

The pores within iron ore sinter are important for producing a high quality material that is strong and easily reduced. The complementary methods of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) were used to characterise the structure of industrial and pilot scales sinters across a wide range of pore sizes (3 nm to 100 µm for MIP and 50 µm to 5 mm for CT). The inhomogeneous nature of sinter and the variation in the measurements make it difficult to compare samples. The generalised additive modelling (GAM) approach, using the open source statistical software package, R, has been applied to highlight where there are peaks in the concentration of pore sizes. Importantly, the shape of the GAM-fitted function and the heights of the peaks show statistically significant differences between samples. For the samples investigated, the GAM-fitted functions for the MIP volume distribution of pore diameters were found to have a common set of distinctive peaks at 0.005, 0.6 and 20 µm. The GAM approach was also applied to the X-ray CT measured pore wall thickness, highlighting a single peak whose position varies between samples. The cause of these distinctive peaks and their implications for sinter quality are discussed. Correlation was found between the volume in peak 1 (0.005 µm) and the concentration of primary hematite. No correlation was found between the pore wall thickness and the strength of the sinter, suggesting the composition of the pore walls may be more important. Future work will focus on small-scale sinters produced under tightly controlled conditions to study sinters with a wider range of quality values.CITATION:Harvey, T, O’Dea, D, Evans, G, Godel, B and Honeyands, T, 2017. The principle objective of development mining is to create thoroughfares that can be accessed by personnel and machinery for the entire life of an underground mine. The drill and blast process, being the primary method used when creating these thoroughfares, needs to be able to adequately fracture the rock to be removed whilst at the same time minimising any damage that may be sustained to the rock surface that remains. This process of damage prevention is known by a variety of different names including smooth blasting, sculpture blasting, contour blasting and controlled blasting. Whilst the terms are different, the objective is the same and that is to reduce and better distribute the explosive charges to minimise stressing and fracturing of the rock beyond the neat excavation line. The process in this report will be referred to as perimeter control blasting. This paper will discuss the benefits of using perimeter control blasting in a development mining operation and the theories that govern how these blasting techniques work. The methods that are used to implement perimeter control blasting will also be addressed, paying particular attention to how these blasting techniques have evolved, spawning new and improved perimeter control products. Finally some attention will be given to the process of optimising perimeter control blasting in any underground mining operation.

The economic outcome in a day-to-day milling is not evident at the concentrator stage, when traditional procedures are used in operations management, based on the supervision of process variables and metallurgical indices. Therefore, in such a complex business, there is a strong need to devise an approach to furnish concentrator's operators with procedures and tools to state and solve the problems related to operational decision making, leading to maximize the economic return of investment; this is what is aimed to be presented in this paper.

Stope support systems, typically consisting of props and packs, are used extensively in the gold and platinum mining industry to stabilize the rock mass in the excavation vicinity and to reduce the hazard associated with rockfalls and rockbursts. The design of stope support systems was historically based predominantly on past experience and practices, and cost considerations. The recent development of a new and improved support design methodology, has led to the potential for significant increases in worker safety and support cost savings. This paper reviews some of the fundamental rock mass and support criteria that form the basis of the improved support design methodology. The considered design criteria are the height of potential fall; quasi-static stope closure rates; dynamic stope closure rates; compressive hangingwall stresses; discontinuity spacing, orientation and interface properties; effect of support length (stoping width); effect of compression rate; consistency of support performance; a real coverage; support spacing; and zone of support influence. The proposed support design methodology combines both the zone of influence and key block stability theories, resulting in optimized support systems for rockfall and rockburst conditions. The site-specific methodology consists of two stages: (i) a tributary area analysis, and (ii) a zone of support influence and a stability analysis, considering hangingwall failure due to buckling, shear and block rotation, which gives maximum safe spacing of individual support units. The methodology is suitable for designing support systems for both blocky hangingwalls and hangingwalls fragmented by face-parallel extension and shear fractures.

The study of strain waves in rock over the past decade has, for the most part, been an investigation related, but not applied, to rock blasting; the design of rock blasts has proceeded on a basis that is independent of strain wave research. This duality is reflected in the paper by Dr. Clark.1 While the greater part of the paper is devoted to a discussion of spherical waves in elastic and visco-elastic media, it is in an entirely unrelated section, the section on scaling and cratering, that the practical approach to rock blasting is found. Work done by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, as described in the paper by Duvall, Atchison, and Fogelson,2 has established a correlation between crater dimensions and the peak compressive strain in the rock. Strain wave measurements have thus been used to compare explosives but have not, as yet, been applied to the planning of a production round once an explosive has been selected. The optimum burden, for instance, is still determined either by experience, empirical formulae (e.g. that of Langefors 3), or a cratering experiment and the theory that has been developed around that proposed by Livingston.4 Even then there is some ambiguity in applying deductions from short, concentrated explosive charges to the long charges often used in practice (although Bauer 5 reports doing this with considerable success) and wave theory has until recently thrown no light on this problem, being confined, with only a few exceptions, to spherical charges. The hesitation in applying strain wave theory has probably been due to two questions that have not been answered satisfactorily: just how important is the strain wave in rock breakage, and if it is important, under what conditions will the wave break rock? This paper is an attempt to answer the first question, to avoid the second question by an admittedly oversimplified assumption, and then to investigate the implications of this assumption for blasting with long cylindrical charges.

Por tal motivo, el objetivo del texto radica en una evaluación de los riesgos del ambiente del trabajador, como en la legislación social, que suele enfatizar más en la indemnización que en la prevención del mismo. Asimismo, se revisan los 13 trabajos realizados en diversos paises de Latinoamérica, encontrándose que solo 5 tienen un programa efectivo en salud ocupacional. En este sentido, los objetivos del programa de salud ocupacional son importantes puesto que un ambiente de trabajo seguro y saludable donde los empleados cuenten con una salud óptima en la producción industrial, beneficiará a la comunidad y la industria minera, respectivamente.

Questões socioambientais têm maximizado a permuta entre o uso de materiais sintéticos para o uso de materiais naturais. A fibra de fique disposta no presente trabalho na forma de tecido, extraída do folha da planta do fique (Furcraea Andina) demonstra grande potencialidade como reforço de compósito polimérico. Nos corpos de prova para os ensaios, as camadas de tecido foram misturadas à resina epoxídica DGEBA/TETA e justapostas sob pressão em um molde retangular metálico à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. A quantidade de tecido de fique nos corpos de prova gerados, foram de até 5 camadas, cortados a partir das dimensões matriciais, seguindo a norma ASTM D256. Testados e após analisados por microscopia de varredura eletrônica (MEV). Pode-se notar o aumento significante da resistência ao impacto de acordo com o crescimento numérico de camadas fibrosas que reforçaram o compósito. Tal performance pode ser associada ao mecanismo de fratura, gerada da interação entre o tecido de fique e a matriz.

"The presently increasing world-wide interest in advanced ceramic materials is generally focussed on their exploitation in both structural and functional applications. With the opportunity to engineer microstructures and thereby closely control and tailor the final properties, there are many new applications being made for these materials in both areas.The scope and some of the applications for functional ceramics are reviewed and examples of the present Canadian activity in this field are discussed.BackgroundThere has been progressively increasing international interest in the development and exploitation of ceramic materials in the last five years. The production of petroleum in India (including Burma) increased from 334,811,624 gal.' ill 1936 to 350,322,222 gal. in 1937, the highest figure in the history of the industry. The increase in 1937 was clue to an increase of some 20 million gallons from Singu, 51/2 million gallons from Attack, 11/4 million gallons from Thayetmyo, and 1 mi1lien gallons from Digboi, accompanied by decrcases of 91/2 million gallons from Yenan-gyaung and 2 million gallons from Yenangyat,. The amount of gasoline produced from natural gas during the year was 10,616,313 gal. in Burma and 456,780 gal. in the Punjab. Yenangyaung Field.—The Yenangyaung field maintained its reputation of being one of the most wonderful oil fields in the world. The total production during 1937 was less than in the previous year but the resources of the field as a whole are sufficient to ensure an adequate supply of oil for many years. At the end of 1037 there were 2910 wells producing in the field. Besides a large number of ells drilled to shallow sands, this total includes 180 hand-dug wells, whose continued existenice is one of the interesting features of the field. During the year the deep drilling activities of 1936 in the southern part of the field died down, owing to the disappointing results obtained. On the eastern flank the limit of present economic extension of the oil sands was approximately demareated. Satisfactory results continue to be obtained from gas drives in the leased blocks; gas is also injected for repressuring and storage. Casing policies continue to be carefully designed to protect the oil sands against the danger of flooding by water and, in general, production methods throughout the field are characterized by a realization of the importance of the conservation of oil and gas and the prevention of waste, whether simple or underground. Singu Field.—-In 1937 the increase in the output from the Singu field was continued. This increased production was due not only to the rapid development of the valuable area in the southern part of the field but also to the successful results obtained from the first wells to produce from behind the practically completed river training wall of the Burmah Oil

HAVING told you of the practices of the arts involving other metals, I wish to tell you also of the practice of that of tin.* Indeed, since this is an easily melted metal, in common use for the utensils which are made for human needs, it is an art known not only to skilled men but also almost to children, wherefore I could proceed with- out telling of it. However, besides the production of plates and bowls and many other dishes for eating from and keeping things in, this embraces two other arts, both of which you should know about because they are useful and beautifid. One of these is the art .of making the letters with which books are printed, and the other is that of making the sheets from which organ pipes are built. The vessels, as perhaps you have seen, are cast one by one in moulds made of white tuff. Several pieces fastened together are then put on the iron axle of a wheel rotated by hand, and [138v] they are turned with a slightly bent tool which has a cutting edge. In this way they are made thin and of a good shape. Then they are polished with a piece of linen cloth and a little powdered tripoli, and thus they are finished. For more than a decade, changes have occurred each year that have improved the regulatory and business climate for mining in Alaska. These changes have taken place during Republican and Democratic governorships as well as when the state House of Representatives and Senate were controlled by either party. During some years, the changes have been relatively minor. In others, including the 2003 legislative session, the changes could only be characterized as massive. These improvements have encouraged exploration. This, in turn, has resulted in some major new discoveries. But Alaska is essentially unexplored and tremendous opportunities remain.

The zone-melting technique can be adapted for the de-termination of the eutectic composition in complex metal systerrzs. The application of this method is demonstrated in a simple eutectic system, Mg-AE, in which the eutectic composition is known and in a complex ternary system, Mg-Al-Zn, in which the literature is uncertain as to the composition of the ternary eutectic. The advantages and limitations of this unique approach for the determirution of the eutectic composition are discussed. ThE eutectic composition in phase diagrams is usually determined by thermal analysis of a series of arbitarily selected alloy compositions. The temperatures of the liquidus and eutectic arrests for each alloy are plotted and the eutectic composition is estimated by extrapolation to the entectic temperature of the curve formed by the liquidus arrest temperatures for the series of alloys. Although this approach readily yields the eutectic temperatures, several dekrminations are needed to estimate the eutectic composition, even in a simple system. In a complex ternary system, a great many determinations are often necessary to estimate, even approximately, the ternary eutectic composition. Thus, the conventional method is inherently tedious and time consuming. The application of zone melting provides a relatively efficient method of determining the eutectic composition.' As an illustration, consider the zone melting of an alloy composition C, in the simple eutectic system A-B, shown in Fig. 1, under the ideal conditions of infinitely rapid diffusion in the liquid, no diffusion in the solid, and ease of nucleation of both phases. As the zone moves along the bar, the composition of the zone is enriched by solute rejected during the freezing of the a phase and the zone composition approaches the eutectic composition CE.Once the zone composition attains the lowest melting composition, i.e., the eutectic composition, it remains at this composition as the zone moves along the bar and finally freezes as such at the end of the bar. Chemical analysis of the end of such a zone-melted bar then should yield the eutectic composition CE of the system A-B. A corresponding analysis can be made for a ternary eutectic system. Under the ideal conditions noted above, only one pass of the molten zone is required to yield the eutectic composition. Experimentally, however, a solute-rich layer forms at the solid-liquid interface2 and the composition of the zone does not attain the eutectic composition as rapidly or as uniformly as in the ideal case outlined above. But with agitation of the melt, the ideal conditions can be approximated experimentally. Also, as shown below, zone melting permits a cumulative build-up of the solute at the end of the bar to the eutectic composition. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate this unique method for determining the eutectic composition. The method is here applied to two systems: first, to the binary Mg-A1 system, in which the composition is well established, and second, to the complex Mg-Al-Zn system in which there is doubt concerning the composition of the ternary eutectic.
