Gasômetros são equipamentos de grande valia para aumento da eficiência energética e ambiental de empresas siderúrgicas integradas, sendo estes equipamentos responsáveis pelo controle da pressão do gás resultante das transformações dos processos siderúrgicos, controle este realizado através das variações de volume abaixo dos pistões. Quando não há disponibilidade de operação dos gasômetros faz-se necessário o uso de torres de queima para controle das pressões das redes de gases. Em dezembro de dois mil e dezoito fora realizada a troca da selagem do gasômetro de gás de Coqueria da ArcelorMittal Tubarão, que utiliza a tecnologia M.A.N. (Selo a óleo). Utilizando técnicas da metodologia Lean, modificando o mindset e alterando antigos paradigmas foi possível realizar a manutenção, de forma eficaz, em 32 dias, 28 a menos que o último trabalho similar realizado e 13 dias a menos que a meta proposta para a parada, aumentando a recuperação de gás de Coqueria, maximizando ganhos de geração elétrica e minimizando a exposição a riscos ambientais associados a parada. As ideias apresentadas neste artigo são de grande valia para a evolução do pensamento crítico e sistêmico sobre a manutenção, não só em gasômetros, mas em todo o contexto de realização de atividades já consolidadas.

THE object of this paper is to show that many of the important phenomena of metals and alloys are due to the facts that, at some stage, metals and alloys, or some of their constituents, are in a colloidal state and that a portion of the metal or alloy tends to remain in this state. The so-called amorphous phase in pure metals is an isocolloid, consisting of colloidal groups of metal molecules that may be dispersed in still more finely subdivided metal; these colloidal particles are not truly amorphous, but may consist, in part, if not entirely, of ultramicroscopic crystals; as a result the expressions amorphous phase and amorphous theory might be replaced by the expressions colloidal phase and colloidal theory. Any substance is in the colloidal state when the constituent particles consist of molecular or atomic groups, whose size varies approximately from about 100µµ down to about 5µµ, that is from just below the limit of microscopic resolvability to the dimensions commonly ascribed to the larger molecules. Colloidality involves no assumption as to the shape, internal structure, or orientation of the colloidal particles; size alone is the critical factor. A colloidal system may therefore contain crystalline groups, or amorphous groups (non-crystalline, random or haphazard clusters), or a mixture of the two. All colloids consist of at least two phases, the subdivided substance, or dispersed phase, and the substance into which this is subdivided, the dispersion medium. It is not necessary that there be any chemical difference between the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium. As molecular forces are extremely powerful, their application may produce marked changes in the physical properties of metals. It is doubtful whether metal in the interior, especially of large masses, possesses the same properties as that on or near the surface, which alone is open to, inspection.

For openings in bedded rocks, analyzed by simple beam theory, it has been shown that roof loads can be shifted from one support to another.' This transfer is effected by controlling the relative deflection of adjacent supports. If this action is used to reduce loads in the props or bolts and increase them in the ribs or pillars, it could be productive of economies averaging 30 pct. Such savings can be realized by: 1) using smaller artifical supports such as props and bolts, and 2) increasing loads in the rib to induce eventual failure for longwall caving. Since the rib is relatively load-insensitive, it provides a natural load sink. However, caution must be used in applying such permissive deflections, for while the supports are being handled properly, the stresses in the roof itself are very sensitive to such manipulations.'

INTRODUCTION The major products of nickel industry in Japan are the electrolytic nickel (E-Ni), the ferro-nickel (Fe-Ni) and the nickel oxide sinter (NOS), totaling in production to 90 - 100 X 103 tons/year in terms of pure nickel content, and sharing approximately 20% for E-Ni, 10% or less for NOS, and the rest for Fe-Ni. The raw materials to be used for these products depend totally upon the imports from abroad; matte, the raw material used in the production of E-Ni, is from Australia and Indonesia; matte for the NOS is from Indonesia and New Caledonia; and garnierite, the raw material for Fe-Ni, is imported in bulk from New Caledonia, Indonesia and the Philippines. This report describes the acquisition of these raw materials, the production processes, trend of supply-demand, problem areas and the measures taken, and so forth, in connection with the nickel industry in Japan. ELECTROLYTIC NICKEL 1. History The nickel industry in Japan began in 1939 by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (SMM) with 150 tons E-Ni/month under the blast furnace smelting and the metal anode electrolysis. This was temporarily suspended after the end of last World War II, but resumed in 1952 with garnierite of New Caledonia as a raw material. Since then, the production capacity has been expanded incidentally to the increase of demand. However, since the smelting of garnierite contained about 2% nickel was very costly, the smelting process had been changed to smelt the briquettes of the mixture of garnierite and nickel sulfide concentrate imported from Canada and Australia. In 1975, this smelter was closed, and SMM's nickel refinery used matte from Western Mining Corp. (WMC) of Australia as a raw material. The refining process had been the metal anode one. The crude nickel oxide derived from roasting the high grade nickel matte had been melted and reduced with coke in the electric furnace and cast into anode. In 1970, a new refinery was constructed to produce 1,000 tons Ni/month under the matte anode process, and further, in 1976, the old refinery was converted into the matte anode process, thus resulting in the total production capacity of 1,690 tons Ni/ month today under the matte anode process. Shimura Kako Co., Ltd. began in 1951 to produce a little of E-Ni, and in 1955, they constructed a shaft furnace smelter with New Caledonian garnierite as a raw material to begin the E-Ni production under the matte anode process. Its monthly production reached 400 tons in 1957, but it discontinued its smeltering in 1963 to convert to the matte import from S. Le Nickel, WMC and INCO. In 1979, it changed the source of matte supply from the above to Soroako of Indonesia, discontinued the E-Ni production in 1979, and arranged for a total toll contract with Sumitomo. Meanwhile, SMM has developed a very distingished process for nickel-cobalt separation and refining by a solvent extraction method from nickel and cobalt mixed sulfide generated as a by-product in the nickel recovering process from laterite under the Nicaro process. Nippon Mining Co., Ltd. (NMC) also developed its own process. The plants under these processes were constructed in 1975, with the monthly production capacity of 230 tons of nickel and 130 tons of cobalt by SMM, and 300 tons of nickel and 110 tons of cobalt by NMC. SMM imports the raw material from the Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corp. of the Philippines, while NMC from Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd. of Australia. 2. Production Status 2.1 Producers and materials Today, SMM holds the monthly E-Ni production capacity of 1,920 tons, of which 1,690 tons are from the matte anode process, and the remaining 230 tons are from the mixed sulfide as a raw material. NMC also uses the mixed sulfide as a raw material for a production of 300 tons/month. [ ] Most of SMM's raw material, nickel matte, is imported from WMC of Australia, partly using the Soroako matte from Indonesia. An example of material analysis is given in Table 1. This Volume documents the Phase 111 effort on the Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners on Contract H0122026 undertaken during the fall of 1972 by a task team composed of ADL staff and several seismic consultants. The team was assembled specifically to work together on complementary tasks, at an accelerated level of effort for four months, to meet the Bureau of Mines' time schedule for obtaining independent, objective, technical judgments regarding seismic methods and systems for detecting and locating isolated miners. The impetus for this work resulted from a compilation and analysis, during the first half of 1972, of new experimental data obtained from a series of in-mine field tests conducted by Westinghouse Corp .+ using the CMRSS* interim seismic location system. The Bureau of Mines took advantage of the availability of these new data to reassess the potential and limitations of various seismic methods and systems, and to direct its seismic system improvement program accordingly. ADL assisted the Bureau in this reassessment by drawing on the skills of seismic consultants from industry, universities and government, to supplement the skills of the ADL project team. The consultants were principal resources of broadly-based and detailed technical expertise in the areas of seismic signal-source and signal-propagation characteristics, natural and cultural seismic noise, seismic sensors and field instrumentation, seismic signal and data processing for detection and location, and overall seismic system utilization in the field under operational emergency conditions. Specifically, the participating consultants were: F. Crowley, Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories ; W. Dean, Teledyne Geotech, Alexandria Laboratories; R. Greenfield, Pennsylvania State University; J. Kuo, Columbia University; D. Peters and R. Crosson, University of Washington; and F. Pilotte, U.S. VELA Seismological Center. The principal ADL participants were J. Ginty, R. Lagace, M. Roetter, and R. Spencer.

Worldwide, hard coal mining is being carried out at ever increasing depth, and has, therefore, to cope with correspondingly increasing methane emissions. About seven per cent of global methane emissions are caused by coal mining. Beside carbon dioxide, chloro-fluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrogen oxides, methane is one of the most significant `greenhouse' gases. It is mainly through the release of such trace gases that the greenhouse effect is brought about. Reducing methane emissions is therefore an important problem to be solved by the coal mining industry. This paper begins by highlighting some of the fundamental principles of methane in hard coal mining. The methane problem in German hard coal mining and the industry's efforts to reduce methane emissions are presented. The future development in German hard coal mining is illustrated by an example which shows how large methane volumes can be managed, while still maintaining high outputs at increasing depth.

Teamwork: The famous first sentence of an essay en- titled Aphorisms, by Hippocrates, is as follows: "Life is short, the Art long, opportunity fleeting, experience treacherous, judgment difficult." The future of science does not depend so much on the number of scientists or the number of colleges, but rather on the individual qualities and the degree of perfection of a limited group of leading scientists and colleges. These are individual factors which require inherent talent which in turn is a condition evolved after generations of culture. Thus, very elaborate higher education for indiscriminate masses of humanity or students may not necessarily show the expected results. In other words, it is possible that higher specialized education should be given only to the few talented individuals, and their capacity and worth should be judged by as highly qualified and talented teachers. Quality is the greatest of all competitive aids. An essential qualification that must be possessed by a quality mineral industries college is a high caliber teaching staff, for the mineral sciences will advance in the coming years only if the leading minds of today are made avail- able as the mental springboards for our scientists of tomorrow. "Predicting the ground response for tunnels in weak shales remains challenging. Predicting the ground response is challenged by difficulties in characterising the material, and our ability to predict deformations that are driven by coupled hydromechanical processes, when this material yields. The techniques that are used for characterizing weak shales are reviewed, and three case histories are examined that demonstrate the behaviour of these weak rocks during tunnelling. A general framework is provided for assessing the squeezing potential for weak shales.1 INTRODUCTIONGeologically, shale is an argillaceous fine-grained sedimentary rock that forms from the compaction of silt and clay-size mineral particles commonly referred to as ""mud"". Because of this grain size, the material is generically classed as Mudstone (Figure 1). Shale is distinguished from other mudstones because it is made up of many thin layers (laminated) and readily splits into thin pieces along the laminations (fissile). While the geological classification of shale appears straightforward, the classification for engineering purposes is often confusing. Underwood (l967) provided the first description of shale that made the distinction between “soil-like” compaction shales and “rock-like ""cemented"" shales. He coined the term ‘clay shale’ to capture the characteristics of hard clay yet recognizing its origin as a shale. In this paper weak shale is synonymous with clay shale and have strengths that typically range from R1 to R2 (1 to 25 MPa). Characterising these materials draws on methods from both soil and rock mechanics."

This paper describes several damages of blasting operations on some case studies, analyzes causative factors, and emphasizes preventive measures. Due to several complaints from some host mining communities as a result of blasting operations; two quarries from Nigeria suburbs were visited for study. The blasting design parameters in the mining companies were examined. Also, the history and existing conclusion of the neighboring buildings were studied using structured questionnaire, personal contact and visual examination. From the study carried out, it was discovered that varying negative environmental and socio economic problems resulted from the effects of vibration and flyrock on the nearby agro mining communities. The consequences are not limited to distortion of landscape but also include extinction of some animals, poor agricultural productivity; such as damages to economic trees and reduction in the yield of crops, health problems as a result of shock resulting to psychological disturbances, communal conflicts, blast induced cracks of structures and sometimes total collapse of host agro mining buildings, thus indicating that most mines did not comply with the safety concept of the existing environmental laws and regulations. Based on the results of the study it was recommended that proper blast design of quarries/mines should be conducted and the compulsory use of seismograph will be crucial in developing predictions. Environmental impact assessment should always be conducted before, during and after each blasting operation. Other possible control of vibration, flyrock and airblast, are also discussed in the paper

Fine grinding of crystalline graphite was conducted using a dry attrition mill with a vacuum system to investigate the characteristics of size reduction. Low pressure and high temperature conditions in the grinding mill were found to greatly improve the efficiency of the size reduction of graphite. Natural flaky graphite of .100 mesh was ground into sub-micron sizes, then over 90% of the product were able to be reduced below 1?without disrupting their crystallinity in a short period of time. Reducing the atmospheric pressure in the grinding environment promotes the removal of chemical species such as oxygen and water molecules adsorbed on the graphite particle, resulting in effective size reduction while maintaining the crystallinity of graphite.

Gentlemen: I am pleased and regard it as a priviledge to give you a report on rapid roadheading with heading machines in the coal mining industry of Western Germany. Importance of Heading Operations in the West German Coal Mining Industry Every year about 770 km of headings are driven In the seams of the West German coal mines, most of them gate roads, the rest rise headings, to open new faces. In thick seams the heading operations are carried out entirely in the coal, in thin seams the country rock has to be ripped. The total length of 770 km corresponds to a rock volume of roughly 9.5 million m3; this figure underlines the importance of the heading operations in the coal mining industry of our country.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar as possíveis transformações microestruturais ocorridas em um aço de alta dureza submetido a altas taxas de deformação induzida por impacto balístico de um projetil 7,62x51 mm perfurante (Pf). Este aço, produzido por siderúrgicas nacionais, compõe o quadro de materiais nacionais usados como blindagens para proteção veicular. Após o ensaio balístico, a microestrutura do material “como recebido” e da região adjacente ao impacto, foi analisada por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados comprovaram o surgimento da microestrutura conhecida por banda de cisalhamento adiabático nos impactos que produziram perfuração, ou seja, penetração completa do projetil, de acordo com o critério da Marinha.

O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar a construção de uma coluna de flotação piloto de baixo custo, que será utilizada para concentração de minerais ferrosos. O trabalho contém os passos seguidos no projeto de construção do equipamento (descrição dos sistemas operacionais; dimensionamento; desenhos do projeto; levantamento dos materiais, fornecedores e orçamentos; testes dos sistemas de aeração e bombeamento, além da montagem) e também, os resultados dos ensaios exploratórios realizados com uma amostra de minério de ferro, contendo 38% de Fe, doada pela Companhia Vale S. A. proveniente da Mina de Alegria, Mariana/MG. Nos ensaios preliminares, obtiveram-se teores de Fe no concentrado próximos a 50% e uma recuperação metalúrgica em torno de 90%. O resultado foi considerado adequado, tendo em vista que foi realizado apenas um estágio de concentração. Dessa forma, conclui-se que a montagem e operação da coluna foram satisfatórias e o protótipo pode ser utilizado como unidade piloto para a avaliação de diferentes condições de processo.

El presente trabajo describe la optimización del proceso de planta de ánodos en la refinería peruana a través del uso de equipos e instalaciones, sin una necesidad de ampliarlos con los hornos de afino. rueda de modelo o prensa de ánodos. Este proceso utiliza como materia prima las barras de cobre blister, las cuales son enviadas vía ferrocarril desde la fundición de SPCC al norte de la refinería. Luego,este cobre blister es cargado a los hornos junto con los ánodos corroídos, el recirculante de ambas plantas, los desechos de cobre, etc., de acuerdo al programa de flete previo al carguío. Finalmente, se inicia el proceso que comprende: fusión, oxidación, reducción, escorificación y moldeo. De acuerdo a este proceso, la planta de ánodos ha mejorado la calidad física y química de los ánodos e incrementó su producción, efectuando los trabajo en equipos y estabilizando los estándares de seguridad.

Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10- 20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C range.

O objetivo geral foi produzir e caracterizar a microestrutura de um compósito abrasivo nanoestruturado no sistema D-Si, via sinterização cíclica de alta pressão e alta temperatura (HPHT). A sinterização cíclica em alta pressão e alta temperatura de compósitos foi feita a partir de uma mistura de 70% diamante e 30% de Si como ligante, o qual foi moído por moagem de alta energia sendo então partícula nanométricaso. A sinterização foi realizada por 1 a 4 ciclos de pressão (P) de 7GPa- 4GPa e temperatura (T) 1600°C-300°C, para um tempo (t) de 1min. As análises de difrações de raios X mostraram a ocorrência, além do diamante, de SiC, FeSi e grafite. As análises de MEV e EDS mostraram uma distribuição uniforme dos cristais de diamante na matriz de SiC. A análise da região de fratura das amostras mostrou que todos os cristais de diamante foram abrangidos pelo ligante, ou seja, a liga formada a partir da interação de carbono e de silício. Finalmente, conclui-se que esta pesquisa aprimorou a técnica de produção de MCDs para uso futuro em bits de brocas de perfuração de poços de petróleo.
