EVERY year it becomes more difficult to find new mining districts and new ore deposits. Nearly all of the important discoveries so far can be attributed to surface manifestations overlying the ore deposit. In the future greater skill will be necessary to find ore deposits that give little or no indication of their presence. Mining geology is making progress by broadening its attack upon mineralized regions, by including in its investigations studies of the relation of physical-chemical processes to ore precipitation and various phenomena that heretofore have not always been looked upon as major factors in the problems. Such, for example, are petrographic peculiarities that will help determine structure, aspects of strata or formations favorable or unfavorable to structural deformation or mineralization, and renewed studies of chert and dolomite. This broadening attack is not necessarily being directed to the study of large areas, but rather by doing extremely detailed work in three dimensions in relatively small critical areas to find the key to the structure, reasons for the manner of rock deformation, composition and texture of the rock, and other con¬trolling factors in the larger areas.

The prime objective of geophysical exploration is to promote the economical and rapid dis-covery of mineral or oil deposits of commercial value. To a few this concept as applied in min-ing may signify the direct discovery of ore-bodies, but to the geophysical engineer this latter Idea is one of the most insidious and detrimental misapprehensions which he has to combat. The destruction of this annoying obstacle to the progress of geophysical exploration reveals the kernel of truth behind it, that the exploration geophysicist has for the better part of two decades been concerned primarily with the discovery of mineral formations favorable to the occur-rence of commercial ore. There is a very real distinction here, since geophysical methods are capable of discovering certain mineral formations such as sulphide bodies or quartz veins, but are totally incompetent to predict whether or not they constitute ore; that is. whether or not they contain minerals of economic value in the amounts requisite to repay extraction. The art of geophysical exploration is now, however, rapidly outgrowing these early limita-tions. The rate of this growth will in large measure depend on the recognition by the mining industry of the fact that geophysics can play a role far wider and more important than it usual-ly does now, in guiding the future exploration and development of mineral deposits. It is my own firm conviction that as time marches on we will see the methods of applied geophysics turned more and more to the delineation of both minor and major structural features. The outlining of such features having a bearing on the probable loci of mineral deposition will be of inestimable value in guiding the development of a mining district. THE inorganic non-metallic minerals, that is, the non-metallics exclusive of coal, oil, gas and related minerals, constitute the basic raw materials for a number of essential industries. It is estimated that the value of the raw materials in this group produced in 1919, together with certain of the primary products ordinarily manufactured at the mine, exceeded $800,000,000. They are employed chiefly in the building, agricultural, and chemical industries. It has been estimated, by the Bureau of Mines, that approximately 00,000,000 worth of non-metallic minerals and their products were used in the building trades during 1918; with the great increase in building since that date and the increased cost of materials, the value of non-metals used in such industries during 1920 probably exceeded $500,000,000. The chief of these materials are cement, building stone, crushed stone, sand and gravel, clay products, lime, gypsum, glass materials, slate, talc and soapstone. In many of the producing industries of this great group, the waste is so great that the expense of handling it is an important item in the production cost. The utilization of waste is receiving unusual attention in many of the non-metallic industries at present. The most obvious advantages of such utilization are: (1) Conservation of mineral resources, (2) the removal of waste heaps that in many places obstruct development, (3) manufacture of new and useful products, (4) reduced production costs through elimination of a large part of the item of waste-disposal expense. In many industries there is keen competition between producers of various products used for the same purpose, so that advantage will accrue to the manufacturer who is able to reduce his production costs.

New Zealand Steel's Taharoa titano-magnetite mine, south of Auckland, set two national load records when it transported around 2000 t of mining equipment three kilometres overland on time, under budget and without safety incident. It was the first time in New Zealand that four platform trailers were assembled end-to-end to transport a load. It was also the first time that a single load of 1000 t was transported on platform trailers. The need for the relocation of all equipment was realized five years ago. It took two years of planning and specialist advice to relocate the mine's 250 t dredge, 500 t surge bin, 1000 t concentrator plant and ancillary equipment from the Southern Mining Region across a specially designed haul road to the Central Mining Region. The project was carried out during a six-week shutdown in early 2001. Two dry docks were constructed, one at each end of the relocation route. The equipment was floated into a dismantling pond that was interconnected with the dry dock in the Southern Region. Through pumping, the water levels were controlled to allow transfer of the separated units from the dismantling pond into the dry dock. Once drained, sets of self-elevating platform trailers were used to transport the main units, one at a time, between the dry docks. Five prime movers were used to pull the loads. At the receiving end, the units were off-loaded in a dry dock interlinked with ,the first mining pond. The equipment was relocated because the reserves in the Southern Mining Region were mined out. A natural watercourse û the Wainui Stream û defines the northern boundary of the Southern Region and the objective became to relocate the mining plant to the other side of the stream and re-establish in the Central Region. The project team selected the trailers as the most effective means of transporting the equipment, particularly given the non-invasive means of crossing the Wainui Stream. Negotiations with prime contractor Tranzcarr Heavy Haulage Ltd commenced in mid-2000. The remainder of 2000 was spent in developing concepts with the contractor, detailed designing, preparing the dry docks, haul road and initial mine plan for the Central Region. These activities occurred with no conflict to the normal site production.

To help maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national, economic, and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of extracting copper from coarse native copper ore with ammoniacal ammonium carbonate solution by a simulated in situ leaching procedure. A 5.9-metric-ton (6.5-ton) sample of minus 30.5-centimeter (12-inch) conglomerate-type ore analyzing 1.96 percent copper was leached in a column for 556 days with a solu-tion that contained, in grams per liter, 2.2 NBs and 1.9 CO[3=]. The copper extraction was 71.4 percent, and reagent consumptions were, in kilograms per metric ton of ore, 1.1 NBs and 0.85 CO[3=] (in pounds per ton of ore, 2.2 NH3 and 1.7 CO[3=]). The pregnant leach solutions contained about 1.4 grams per liter copper, which was readily extracted from these low-tenor liquors with a 1:19 mixture of an organic extractant and kerosine. Copper was stripped from the loaded organic with depleted electrolyte containing 150 grams per liter H2S04, and the copper was recovered by electrowinning with antimonial lead anodes. Conditions also were established for minimal lead transfer to the cathode copper.

EACH branch of engineering seems to depend on the cooperation and contribution of some other branches to enable it to produce more efficient methods and appliances for man to use. The purpose of this paper is to show approximately the gain in efficiency of self-propelled merchant ships when steel of greater elasticity is substituted for mild steel in some of the strength members and alu-minum alloy is substituted in some of the parts where strength is not essential. The new steel will have some greater strength and a much greater elastic limit in the as-rolled condition, and must be readily weld-able under ordinary conditions of shipbuilding. Naturally, its cost may be more than mild steel, but if the demand is great that excess cost may be reduced to an amount that will make its use more economical than that of the present mild steel. There appears to be a well defined axiom in engineering today that to use the least power to carry a given load the weight of the carrier must be reduced to a minimum. This minimum must be, of course, consistent with the necessary strength, rigidity and durability and it must not be attained at an excessive cost where the fixed charges of the carrier will exceed the savings in, operating the motive power. Recent railroad equipment is a notable example of this, and in these trains alloy steels and aluminum together with less weight per horsepower of the power plant are reducing the weight of the carrier and hence the total power required for moving the paying load. Before considering the application of these metals to shipbuilding, it is well to explain some of the fundamentals of ship design.

In China all minerals are, theoretically at least, the property of the Emperor, and the Imperial permission must be got from him for the privilege of working them. A direct tax is levied on this privilege, and by simple command, the Emperor can close a mine at any time. Occult geomantic influences are a large factor in determining the opening or the arbitrary closing of a mine. The location with reference to points of the compass, graves and natural objects, may be really or professedly considered as indicating that those influences are favorable or unfavorable. The consequence, is, of course, that for the authorization and encouragement of any considerable enterprise, friends' at court, practical politics, and more or less bribery, are required. As a result, most Chinese mining is illicit, and is carried on in a small way only. Often along a single vein, or over a small section of mining country, a few individuals obtain rights over all the openings, most probably by loaning money to the head-men of the operators and holding the mines as security for the debt. In such cases, perhaps, for better security, all the ore is reduced in the works established by the creditors, who also handle all silver produced..As the head-men are, for the most part, improvident, and the laws and customs for the collection of' debts are stringent and peculiar, the " officemen" or creditors acquire in time what is practically an ownership of

The importance of the minerals industry in the economy of the country is discussed, and the tremendous changes that have taken place over the past two decades, including the widespread application of computers and the use of mechanization, are outlined. A discussion of the future of the minerals industry points out that, with the rise in the price of gold, the life of the gold-mining industry can be expected to extend beyond that previously predicted, and that the demand for uranium, which has been depressed, is uncertain. As a result of the oil crisis, the demand for coal has increased and large expansion programmes are planned. These involve coal exports and the use of coal for the generation of electric power, for the production of liquid fuels, and for the smelting of metals. Technical challenges face engineers in every avenue of the minerals industry: in deep gold mines, underground coal mines, strip coal mines, and open-pit mines. Studies indicate that only one-third of the demand for trained mining and metallurgical engineers is being met and that the position is worsening. However, there are indications that the industry is succeeding in attracting more engineering students, and the supply is expected to improve. These efforts should be co-ordinated, expanded, and intensified. There is a need to ensure that sufficient teaching staff of the right calibre and experience are attracted to universities and technikons. The first degree course is comprehensive and basic, and specialization through post-graduate study should be encouraged. The influence of national service on the education and training of engineers is discussed.

The demand for natural resources has grown over the years, however, the environment offers a limited amount of these resources for exploration. Then, the investigation of new methods for recovering and reuse some compounds and elements are essential to know later tailings purposes. Zinc is used in corrosion resistance as a protective coating for several products. One of the steps for the extraction of zinc is by flotation process to obtain the concentrated ore, in which a residue is generated. The aim is to characterize this residue, allowing the choice of recovery routes for compounds and elements in future stages. The methods of analysis were Malvern, VA, Eltra and ICP-OES, besides the water content. In this study, a characterization of elemental chemical analysis was performed, in which the main elements presented were: calcium (17.4%), magnesium (10.3%) and iron (7.97%); the water content was 27% and the grain size of the material presented an average size of 50μm. With the presented characteristics the material can be used, after treatment, in the recovery of other compounds for applications in the sector of fertilizers, ceramics and steel industry.

This is one of a series of paper's being published by the Bureau of Mines on placer mining; it is written as a supplement to Information Circular 6788, "Placer Mining in the Western United States, Part III", by E. D. Gardner and C. H. Johnson which was published in February 1935. Since Information Circular 6788 was written (1933), considerable advance has been made in the technique of mining placer gravels with power shovels and draglines. Although new washing plants continue to be built in accordance with untried designs the trend of new installations is toward proved equipment. A substantial number of plants are now being operated successfully (1937).

Introduction The usefulness of microscopes in exploration and ore dressing, problems has been documented for the older generation of mining industry personnel in such publications as Schneiderhohn and Ramdohr (1931). A more recent publication that examines the subject is Process Mineralogy, a conference proceedings of The Metallurgical Society (TMS, 1981). However, it is worthwhile to review some of the principles and advantages of microscopic examination of rocks, ores, and mill products. Transmitted light Microscopists can look at materials in transmitted or reflected light. Studying transmitted light is what is usually meant by petrography. In this method, the light passes through the specimen. The upper polarizing filter can be moved in (crossed nicols) or out (open nicols) of the light path. The specimen can be a thin section, a slice of rock mounted on a glass slide and ground to 30 µm (>400 mesh). Or, it can be a sample of rock or ore crushed to about 70 µm (200 mesh). Transmitted light study is particularly suited to gangue minerals, such as quartz, carbonates, and feldspars, and to the study of alteration processes and products. It has some applications to liberation studies. Minerals are identified in transmitted light by observable and measurable optical parameters, such as cleavage and twinning. The efficiency of the reverberatory furnace operation in producing. slags of 1020 copper content depends on the mixing and flow conditions in the bath. Radioactize-tmcer tests have indicated the jkaction of bath volume engaged inflow and the mixing conditions in the bath. The factors controlling the flow pattern of slag have been classified as laminar transfer flow, natrsral convection, and flou, due to the rapid addition or removal of slag.. Similarity criteria for model studies have been developed. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper begins with the smelting of either flotation concentrates, or direct-smelting ores which have been partially roasted to calcines. These materials are generally smelted in a reverberatory furnace, Fig. 1, and separate into two liquid phases, a sulfide matte and an iron silicate slag. he matte is tapped and subsequently reduced to metallic copper in a converter, while the reverberatory slag is usually discarded without any further treatment. Molten slag from the converting operation is returned intermittently to the reverberatory in order to recover its high copper content (1 to 3 pct Cu). The reverberatory furnace is about 115 ft long by 30 ft wide. In general, the solid charge is fed at intervals through openings along the sides of the roof and forms sloping banks from which the molten materials trickle down into the bath; the charge banks extend over a length of about 70 ft from the firing wall. The depth of the slag and matte layers varies from smelter to smelter; in the Noranda furnaces, the slag depth is 24 to 30 in., while the depth of matte at the taphole is about 20 in. Apart from smelting, the functions of the reverberatory are to recover most of the copper content in the converter slag by physical and chemical interaction with the furnace bath, and to provide adequate time for optimum separation between matte and slag. The efficiency of these operations depends on the mixing and flow conditions in the bath and is reflected on the copper losses in the slag. In the present study, the reverberatory furnace is considered as an open-channel chemical reactor and the driving forces for material transport through the bath are examined by means of flow and mathematical models. FLOW CONDITIONS IN THE REVERBERATORY FURNACE To facilitate the study of mixing conditions in continuous-flow reactors, two idealized patterns of flow have been accepted by workers in this field.' The term "backmix" flow is used to describe complete and instantaneous mixing in the reactor (perfect mixing); all particles have the same chance of leaving the system, independently of their time of entrance, and the fluid is uniform in composition throughout the vessel. On the other hand, "plug" flow, or "piston" flow, assumes that a fluid element moves through the reactor without overtaking or mixing with fluid entering at an earlier or later time. In addition to the two idealized patterns of flow, "deadwater" flow accounts for that portion of the fluid which is moving so slowly that it may be assumed to be stagnant. According to the definition by evensppiel,' the cut-off point between active and stagnant fluid may be taken as material which stays in the vessel for a period twice the mean residence time. The flow patterns in real vessels may be approximated by a combination of the above flows. Thus, the vessel is assumed to consist of interconnected flow regions with various modes of flow existing between them. The flow pattern may be determined directly from the flow paths of fluid through the essel. -However, the difficulty of obtaining and interpreting such information has led to the alternate approach of determining the residence time distribution of fluid elements by means of stimulus-response studies. The stimulus is provided by introducing a tracer in the inlet stream and the response by the record of the change in tracer concentration in the exit stream from the reactor. Such tests have been conducted in glass tank furnaces using either chemical7"9 or radioactive tracers1'-'' and, in one case, experiments have been reported for a metallurgical furnace.'"

ABSTRACT: One alternative to close a radioactive waste repository in rock salt is the construction of a “Cross Section Closure (CSC)“ sealing barrier. The proposed material for the CSC is highly compacted bentonite. To investigate the swelling behaviour of a highly compacted bentonite a large number of laboratory tests were performed. In addition, large scale model test were carried out to demonstrate the development of a nearly homogeneous and isotropic swelling pressure. The results of the large scale model tests were interpreted numerically based on the models for stress-strain behaviour and water uptake which are implemented in the finite element codes FEST03 and HYDOPO. The investigations show a good agreement of the results of the model tests and the corresponding analyses and show, that the theoretical models are capable of describing the behaviour of sealing structures based on highly compacted bentonite. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Eine Möglichkeit für den Verschluß eines Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle im Steinsalz ist die Konstruktion einer Querschnittsabdichtung aus hochverdichtetem Bentonit. Zur Untersuchung des Quellverhaltens von hochverdichtetem Bentonit wurden eine große Anzahl von Laborversuchen durchgeführt. Um die Entwicklung eines nahezu homogenen und isotropen Quelldrucks nachzuweisen, wurden darüber hinaus auch Modellversuche in größerem Maßstab durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Modellversuche wurden im Hinblick auf die Wasseraufnahme und das Spannungs-Verformungsverhalten mit Hilfe numerischer Berechnungen mit den finite Element Programmen FEST 03 und HYDOPO interpretiert. Die Untersuchungen zeigen gute Übereinstimmungen zwischen Versuchs- und Berechnungsergebnissen. Die numerischen Modelle sind somit geeignet, das Verhalten von Abdichtungsbauwerken aus hochverdichtetem Bentonit zutreffend zu beschreiben. RÉSUMÉ: Une possibilité pour fermer un dépôt final de déchets radioactifs dans sel gemme est la construction d'un étanchement de coupe transversale, fabriqué de bentonite fortement compacté. Pour étudier le comportement de gonflement de bentonite fortement compacté, de nombreux essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés. En outre, des essais sur modèle sur une plus grande échelle ont aussi été exécutes afin de prouver le développement d'une pression de gonflement à peu près homogène et isotrope. Les résultats de ces essais sur modèle étaient interprétés en vue de l'absorption d'eau et du comportement contraintes-déformations par le moyen de calculs numériques avec les programmes d'éléments finis FEST03 et HYDOPO. Les études montrent de bonnes conformités entre des résultats d'essai et de calcul. Les modèles numériques sont ainsi capables de décrire justement le comportement d'ouvrages d'étanchement fabriqués de bentonite fortement compacté.

The Peko copper orebody is associated with a body of magnetite rock which it has partly replaced. The primary ore averages about 9 per cent. copper and 4 dwt. gold per ton and locally IS much richer. It consists essentially of chalcopyrite and unreplaced magnetite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and native gold. The earliest formed mineral is wolfram, and the latest formed is goethite, so that the temperature of deposition ranged from about 5000 C. to 1650 C. or lower.Oxidation extends to 270 ft., which is 100 ft. below the present water level. The oxidized ore consists of cuprite and native copper, and has replaced more or less massive chalcocite of a former zone of secondary sulphide enrichment. The present zone of secondary sulphide enrichment extends from about 270 ft. to 310 ft. depth.INTRODUCTIONThe Peko mine is about 6 miles south-west of Tennant Creek township in the Northern Territory, adjacent to a small outcrop of hematite rock that projects above an otherwise featureless "bull-dust" fiat.The copper-gold orebody being developed in this mine did not outcrop. It was first detected in 1950 by a surface diamond-drill hole (DDH.1), which intersected primary copper ore at a depth of 400 to 425 ft. This ore contained from 4 to 11 per cent. copper and 1 to 25 dwt. gold per ton. Since then a shaft has been sunk, and crosscuts and development drives have been opened on the 210..ft., 300-ft. and 400-ft. levels, which are also connected by winzes. Two diamond drill holes sunk from the 400-ft. level have intersected theorebody at about 450 to 460 ft., and a winze from the 400-ft. level intersected the lode from 445 to 500 ft. At this point it is 54 ft. wide, and averages 9 per cent. copper. More recently an inclined surface drill hole (Peko No. 1) has cut the lode at 856 ft. to 921 ft., equivalent to a vertical depth...

THE term "splint" seems to have been adopted to describe the fracture of the hard bituminous coals of West Virginia. It is not a scientific name,, but rather a trade term, and does not indicate a correspondence with English splint. At present it is a popular word, and is very loosely applied to coals of various qualities, in the desire to improve their sale. The Kanawha splint is distinguished by its hardness, dull lustre, coarse fibrous structure, its purity, and especially its resistance to atmospheric influence. It kindles very readily, burns with a bright flame, but does not cake, so that a lump when half consumed, may be broken by a slight blow in its plane of cleavage, though 'it will resist a' strong blow in any other direction. Analyses that include diffusion of solute in the solid phase are formulated to describe solute redistribution in dendritic solidification of metallic alloys. The analyses are based on conditions that include negligible undercooling before nucleation of solid phases, negligible increase of solute in advance of the tips of growing dendrites, complete diffusion within the liquid over distances the order of dendrite spacings, and a plate-like dendrite morphology. The classical nonequilibrium freezing equation, Cs = kCo(I - fS)k-l accurately describes solute redistribution between dendrite arms for the solidification processes considered, provided diffusion in the solid is negligible. To account for the effect of diffusion in the solid, an analytic expression is given which is similar inform to the classical expression. 172 addition, a numerical-analysis procedure is etnployed to examine in more detail the effect of diffusion both during and after solidification. The analyses are intended for application to solidification of castings and ingots to describe a) final solute distribution after solidification and cooling to room temperature (microsegregation) and b) local fraction solid as a function of ternperatcre within the solidifying casting or ingol. SOLUTE redistribution in cellular and dendritic solidification has been discussed quantitatively in recent papers'-3 and in a series of earlier work.4-6 However, none of the analyses developed have permitted close correlation of theory with final solute distribution (microsegregation) observed in castings and ingots. In this paper, discussion is given of approximations which may reasonably be made in mathematical treatment of microsegregation, and analyses are presented based on these approximations. Numerical results are given for Al-Cu alloys. In a second paper the analyses will be compared with exeriment.7 CLASSICAL ANALYSIS The classical quantitative treatment of solute redistribution within a closed "volume element" has been derived repeatedly, for example by Gulliver,4 Scheil,' and Pfann.' This "classical nonequilibrium solidification equation" is written for constant partition ratio: where Cs = interface composition of the solid when the weight-fraction solid within the "volume element" is fs (weight fraction, wt pct); k = equilibrium partition ratio; Co = initial alloy composition within the volume element (weight fraction, wt pct). Assumptions of Eq. [11 are: 1) There is negligible undercooling before nuclea-tion, or from curvature or kinetic effects. 2) There is no mass flow in or out of the volume

The scope of this paper is the description of two districts in Peru in which deposits of vanadium have been found, and the consideration of much laboratory-work that I and others have done to determine the nature of these deposits. It is with regret that I present some of the data in a state of evident incompletion, particularly the analyses of a few of the minerals, which leaves some doubt as to whether the true nature of the migerals is understood. I make no apology, however, since in this case, as in many others referring to ore-deposits, conclusive opinions cannot be stated until a great amount of work has been done, and the deposit has been thoroughly exploited. I believe that the data and the tentative conclusions here presented indicate a unique and interesting condition which may assist others in work along similar lines; arid further, what is of more practical importance, stimulate a search for a metal which, though long considered rare, is probably so merely because proper care has not been taken to recognize it. An excellent bibliography on the occurrence of vanadium in nature is given by I?. W. Clarke in his paper, Data of Geochemistry;' and in the preparation of this paper 1 have consulted many of the references contained in the Bibliography of the Chemistry of Vanadium, by M. Moisan.2 A brief review of the subject having special reference to the metallurgy of vanadium is contained in the small book by P. The Research Council of SME, at its Annual Meeting in Reno, NR, in February 1993, held a Research Forum on Technology for the Future. The Forum's purpose was to find out from the members, particularly those from industry, their opinions on research needed in the mineral industries. Panelists were selected for their breadth of knowledge and connections. Many panelists, in turn, solicited opinions from additional contacts. A similar effort is underway with mineral-oriented schools. A parallel mission has been undertaken by the American Mining Congress (AMC) through its Committee on Technology. In particular, AMC is concerned that the needs of industry be transmitted in a timely way to federal agencies, especially the US Bureau of Mines. This article reports to the SME membership the principal findings of the Research Forum. The article is derived from a full report that is available from SME. Many of the calls for research made during the Forum can be clustered into five broad categories. These categories are discussed in the following sections of this article. However, since the time of the Forum, many reviewers of the full report have noticed that fundamental research was not given much emphasis. The Research Council points out that the Forum was organized around industrial needs. There is a call to the academic and research community to organize a similar Forum. The Council emphasizes that this is not the last word on research needs and that the membership is urged to continue to give ideas and opinions to the SME Research Council. There will be an opportunity at its next meeting during the SME Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, NM, Feb. 22, 1994, for open discussion of this report. Because the opinions were intentionally confined to representatives from industry, the problems portrayed and the solutions sought are from the vantage of an operator. It comes as no surprise that many of the espoused research desiderata seek more efficient or cost-effective outcomes for the various mining activities discussed. The order of the Forum was a straightforward set of mining activities: exploration, evaluation, mining and processing.
