ENGINEERS, operators, miners, and others di-rectly interested in mining will readily agree that more of well-directed illumination in mines will result in a reduction of accidents and general im-provement in the working conditions, comfort, and effi-ciency of those employed underground. Progress has been made in the amount of illumination from individual lamps carried by miners. The candle, which a great many of us can remember as the general method of lighting, was replaced by the oil lamp or torch, later by a specially prepared oil known as "Sunshine," and eventually by the carbide cap lamp. The metal mines still present a field for progress from the standpoint of general illumination, particular-ly those mines having high stopes. Attention is being more and more focussed upon the advantages of im-proved lighting in mines, in order that the underground employee may benefit as the factory workers have al-ready done. The management is vitally interested in the morale of its employees, the reduction of costly accidents and increased production, all of which, judging by results in other industries, will be sub-stantially benefitted through the means of improved general illumination. From data available to the writer, 40 to 50 per cent of the accidents in the metal mines occur at the face; they may be due to roof falls, movement of loose ore, loading of cans, handling of tools, etc. Very probably a large proportion of these accidents may be attributed to lack of light. If sufficient illumination had been present the employee could have seen what was happen-ing and taken the proper precautions. The introduc-tion of better illumination means better visibility, de-crease in accidents, and increase in efficiency.

IT is generally believed that the amount of diamond drilling will increase appreciably in the next decade, as the search for minerals throughout the world becomes more difficult and intense. An attendant problem may be one of short diamond supply, resulting in higher bit and drilling cost. With this background, the U. S. Bureau of Mines1 and the School of Mines at the University of Minnesota2 have established comprehensive research programs in diamond drilling. One of the several aims is the design of a more efficient bit, which would lower diamond consumption and increase rate of advance, both essential in reducing drilling costs.

The concept of entropy is classical in thermodynamics and information theory. Its potential use as a measure of the ordering of a spatial system is discussed. Although entropy has been discussed previously in the framework of spatial statistics and for univariate distributions, a bivariate data-based estimator has not until now been defined. Different statistical distributions maximize entropy, depending on the univariate, bivariate, or n-variate constraints applied. For bivariate distributions, with a known mean and known covariance, it can be shown that the distribution that maximizes the entropy of the system is the bivariate gaussian. A nonparametric bivariate entropy estimator is introduced, derived directly from the experimental cumulative frequency distribution. Assuming that this experimental bivariate distribution is representative of the population distribution, then a measure of departure from gaussianity can be introduced as a relative entropy estimator. Practical applications for the entropy estimator are discussed, and an example developed.

It is common to blame irregular assay results upon volatilization and much has been written upon the subject, but there is no real evidence that, in a properly conducted assay, the loss of either gold or silver by volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result, even when arsenic or antimony may be present. Bulk assays of flue dust from assay muffles have been published, but the data given are totally insufficient to even approximate the volatilization from a single assay; and such figures as we have indicate the volatilization to be extremely small. Diligent search in the literature and wide inquiry among assayers and instructors have failed to produce a single case where the litharge volatilized in making an assay has been collected and assayed for gold and silver. Having attempted to do this, with most indifferent success, I am not surprised that this has not been done. While various textbooks give volatilization as a cause of loss in cupella-tion, it may safely be said that in the rare cases where this volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result it is due to excessive temperature. Percy' says "The loss of silver by volatilization during cupellation is very slight (unless the temperature has been much too high), and may be disregarded." This statement is repeated by the Beringers2 and Smith,3 who includes gold with silver. Mitchell4 says the litharge fume rarely contains over one ten-thousandth of silver. Campredon5 ays that at a proper temperature no silver is lost by volatilization. Primarily, excessive temperature may be due to too high general temperature in the muffle; but it may often be due to temperature localized within the bead by oxidation of the metals and this may be influenced by other causes than the general temperature. The nonferrous metals industry has been a sector with one of the highest growth rates during the recent years. The prospects for the Russian metals industry during the period until 2010 are associated first of all with a growing domestic demand for its products. The technological level of the metallurgical operations in Russia is relatively low in comparison with industrially developed countries: the average energy requirement is higher by 20% to 30%; the amount of generated waste in the process of rolled products manufacture is twice as high; the average labor productivity is lower by 2.5 to 3.0 times; the overall negative environmental impact is twice as high. Improvement of the technological level of the nonferrous metals production under the conditions of market economy is possible by application of innovative technologies for the development of this sector. The main trends for development of the nonferrous metals sector are: - meeting of more stringent requirements to the quality of concentrates; - more complete recovery of associated elements as commercial-grade products; - development of continuous process lines based on autogenous, resource-saving and environmentally safe processes; - use of combined technologies, including pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and upgrading processes; - expansion of the fields of application for nonferrous metals and their alloys.

The mining and oil industries employ techniques such as geologic mapping, core drilling and electromagnetic field techniques to explore for new deposits. New discoveries of major near-surface ore bodies are becoming progressively rare and traditional exploration methods are unable to resolve ore bodies deeper than about 500 m (1640.4 ft). Consequently high-resolution seismic reflection techniques show great potential for exploration to much greater depths down to almost 3 km (1.9 mi).

When coal seam is under the integral thick sandstone (or conglomerate), the structure of thick sandstone is integral and its strength is rather high. After coal is extracted, the roof is hanging and caving is difficult. When the method of full caving is adopted in the longwall working face to control this kind of hard and difficult caving roof, the effect of roof-controlling affects directly the production and safety. In China Datong Coal Mines the extracting coal deposit is Datong Jurassic period. Most of the roof is sandstone and conglomerate. It is hard and difficult to cave. Having used special hydraulic power supports and other special ways to deal with the roof, the hard and difficult caving roof has been controlled.

This paper presents an analysis of mechanism of secondary fragmentation and respirable dust generation due to regrinding. In continuous miners, the recovered coal and uncleaned coal from the previous cutting cycle have to be transported through the circumference of the cutting drum, subjecting the coal to regrinding. Such regrinding comminutes the coal material utilizing kinetic energy, thus creating a great amount of respirable dust. The mechanism of a single particle subjected to regrinding is analyzed. A mathematical model is developed to describe regrinding in field conditions. The important factors influencing the comminution process are discussed in detail. Utilizing three types of coal seams, laboratory experiments are being carried out with an Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) to quantitatively evaluate the effects of some particular parameters, such as cutting velocity, depth of sump and properties of coal material, on breakage and on the amount of respirable dust generated. An orthogonal fractional factorial experimental arrangement is used to optimize experimental design. Preliminary experimental results are presented.

In preparing a paper on coal washing in Colorado and New Mexico, it is difficult to refrain from entering into a discussion of the historical aspects of this subject, for the story of coal washing in these states goes hack well into the last century. This phase of the subject could well make a complete paper in itself, and of necessity this present discussion must be limited to current operations. Therefore, we are taking into consideration only those washing plants which have operated for some period during the years of 1947 and 1948. Summary Of the eight million tons of coal mined in the two states in 1947. ap- proximately two million tons were washed in wet washing plants, using concentrating tables or jigs. The one table plant accounted for 70 pct of the output of washed coal, and two large Baum jig plants accounted for an additional 26 pct, leaving only a small residual tonnage to be accounted for by other types of jigs The necessity for washing coal is occasioned by the desire or necessity of reducing the ash content of the coals— sulphur is not a problem in this area. All washeries, except the table plant, are at or near the tipple, hence wash only one kind of coal. At the table plant a large number of different coals are washed. Only at the table plant is there any occasion for drying any considerable quantity of fine coal— other plants size and/or dewater on shaking screens. The results of washing at the smaller plants are judged by the number (or lack) of complaints about the quality of the washed coal. This is probably as good a system as can he devised for small, intermittent operations. The efficiency of the Baum jig ap-pears to be quite high. This is to be expected as long as the automatic control of the refuse gate operates properly. The efficiency of the concentrating table is not as high as that of the Baum jig, especially when the "difficulty" of washing is taken into consideration. When dealing with coals in which the "bone" is larger than the "coal," the table appears to be at a definite disadvantage, because of its sizing action.

Since its creation in 1950, the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches des Charbonnages de France at Verneuil-en-Halatte (Oise) has been conducting many investigations concerned with airborne dust measurements, particularly in underground mines. The work has resulted in the development, a few years ago, of a new process of dust sampling, whereby the airborne dust particles are collected by a rotary filter of polyurethane foam rotating at high speed within 8 housing.

"Slurry «viscosity» has been recognised for several decades as a variable that significantly influences the operation of grinding mills. This paper describes an instrument that can be used in a laboratory or a plant to measure and monitor the flow properties of mineral slurries. Laboratory results obtained for two different ore samples are consistent with results obtained during a full scale trial. The results provide a basis for analysing the effect of the solids concentration and particle size distribution on the slurry flow properties. Grinding tests were also conducted in an attempt to link the grinding efficiency to the rheological properties of mineral slurries.INTRODUCTIONThe flow properties, or incorrectly called «viscosity», of a slurry influence the operation of mineral processing devices. Work has been conducted for instance to assess the effect of this variable on the operation of hydrocyclones (Kawatra et al. 1996; Klimpel, 1982a) and dense media separators for coal (Napier-Munn, 1996). However, most of the research effort has been oriented toward the grinding processes which is still the most energy demanding operation for ore dressing (Fuerstenau et al., 1995).Results of investigations of the influence of slurry flow properties upon grinding performances are presented regularly in the literature since 1950. In the 70's, most of the research work was conducted with the aim of using slurry flow properties for the control of grinding mill and to analyze the effect of that variable upon the population balance model breakage and rate functions (Austin et al., 1984; Hemmings et Boyes, 1977). In the 80's, most of the litterature dealing with slurry rheology was devoted to the use of viscosity modifiers to adjust the slurry flow properties, allowing an increase of grinding mill throughputs (Klimpel, 1982b; Fuerstenau et al., 1985). Although laboratory and pilot plant results show the benefits of adding these modifiers to the slurry, few plants have published results concerning the advantages of such addition (Fuerstenau et al., 1985). It is felt that the use of these modifiers introduce operating difficulties with the concentration circuits, especially flotation (Kawatra et Eisele, 1988)."

THE purpose of this paper is to present a brief sketch of the development of this hindered-settling classifier, but primarily to show the actual results obtained in practice with the classifier working on the Butte copper ores at the Boston & Montana Concentrator, at Great Falls and the Washoe Concentrator at Anaconda. The writer has endeavored to be as brief as possible, giving only the essential figures showing the efficiency of the classifier and leaving considerable interesting information to be derived by the reader from the statistics given. In the following pages all overflows, are given in quartz dimensions; i.e., by a 0.75-mm. overflow 'is meant an overflow whose maximum particle is a 0.75-mm. quartz grain. By the term "slime" is meant all material which will pass through a 200-mesh screen whose average opening is 0.07 mm.

The support of stopes and tunnels in South African gold mines subject to rockburst damage requires special attention. The interaction of a seismic wave with either a stope or a tunnel is subject to a number of variables, namely the distance from the source of the event, the ground velocity, the orientation of the excavation with respect to the direction of the seismic wave, and the geology and fracturing around the excavation. This paper discusses these factors in relation to the support requirements in stopes and tunnels. The need for the integration of hydraulic props with stope support and the use of yielding anchors for tunnel support are emphasized.

Experts, like many of the speakers at the SME Annual Conference, are frequently called upon by lawyers to assist them in litigation. Due to the technical nature of many cases, the testimony of an expert with knowledge and experience in a particular field is necessary to help a judge or jury understand and decide certain issues. Environmental litigation is no exception. Experts routinely are called upon to offer testimony to establish the existence of contamination and its source, as well as the potential health and environmental risks associated with the contaminants. This article will briefly discuss the factors courts apply to determine whether to admit expert testimony after the recent Supreme Court decision in Daubert v. Memell Dow Pharm., Inc., 509 U.S. 579 (1993). The Court's decision in Daubert overruled a long-standing test that had based the admissibility of scientific evidence on its "general acceptance" in the field in issue. Next, the article will discuss in general terms what a party must do to "link a particular defendant's conduct to the contamination involved in order to recover from that defendant. This link, known as causation, varies depending upon the type of claim being asserted. Expert witnesses are used extensively to help establish causation. JUNK SCIENCE OR GOOD SCIENCE- HOW DOES A COURT DETERMINE WHAT TO LET IN A frequent complaint in litigation involving technical or scientific issues is that one party or another is trying to use so-called "junk science" to prove its case. While some expert testimony might be so clearly lacking in support or so "off the wall" that a court can easily determine to exclude it, other testimony, especially testimony on the "cutting edge," is much more problematic. In 1923, the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals decided the case of Frye v. United States, 293 E 1013 (1923). Calcium treatment of alumina inclusions, to convert the alumina to molten or partially molten calcium aluminates, is a well-established treatment for steel, to improve the castability of aluminium-killed steel. However, the role of magnesium in calcium-treated steel is not fully clear, nor is the origin of the several percent of magnesium oxide that is often present in calcium-treated inclusions. To study this, steel was sampled after calcium treatment at an industrial steel plant, and the inclusions identified by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) on polished sections of the samples (analysing the samples in a scanning electron microscope). The predicted fraction liquid in the inclusion was estimated from the ternary alumina-magnesia-lime phase diagram. Inclusions with higher CaO contents generally had lower MgO contents, indicating that the calcium wire is not the origin of the magnesium in the inclusions; this was also confirmed by wet chemical analysis of the calcium wire. Instead, it appears that magnesium-alumina spinel inclusions form during extended ladle contact after aluminium killing and before calcium treatment. While such spinels have been stated to cause poor castability (clogging the submerged-entry nozzle), it is clear that calcium treatment successfully modifies the spinel inclusions to mixed alumina-lime-magnesia inclusions, where the magnesia content contributes substantially to liquefaction of the inclusions: for typical MgO contents of around 10%, the range of Ca:O ratios which yield liquid (or partially liquid) inclusions is extended substantially to lower Ca:O ratios.

The Berlin gold-quartz mine is situated in Nye county, Nevada, on the west flank of the Shoshone range, about 40 miles south and 30 miles west from the town of Austin, the county-seat of Lander county. The distance from Austin is about 60 miles by stage-road. The outcrop of the vein, at the top of the incline-shaft, is situated just at the base of the mountain proper, almost exactly at the intersection of the mountain-side with the gravelly bench that slopes for about three-quarters of a mile to the flatter sage-brush plain, or desert valley, below. The vein itself consists almost entirely of quartz, with perhaps 2 per cent. of sulphide of iron, copper, lead, zinc and antimony, and perhaps a trace of some of the compounds of tellurium with gold and silver, although none of the latter have been as yet positively identified. The relative proportion, by weight, of silver and gold in the ores, varies in different parts of the vein, from 12 silver for 1 of gold, to 7 silver for 1 of gold. The quartz vein-filling is usually frozen fast to the walls, and is very hard and compact, seldom showing the friable, fissured, or shelly structure often to be found in quartz-veins. Comparatively little evidence of relative motion of one wall of the vein upon the other is to be found—a fact indicating that during the formation of the vein, and prior to the extensive movements herein described, little disturbance had taken place. No evidence whatever of metasomatic origin has been observed. On the other hand, occasional occurrences of comby structure, in which the axes of the quartz-crystals are at right angles to the plane of the vein, rather indicate deposition from solution in a pre-existing fissure. The Bureau of Mines examined explosion development in a closed spherical vessel, mathematically correlating flame travel, pressure, and time with parameters defining the reaction. The model assumes that burnt and unburnt zones are separated by a thin, radially moving flame front. Isothermal and adiabatic systems are considered. Correlation with gas and dust explosion data is better for the adiabatic system, but the isothermal development is simpler and in reasonably good agreement. Interpretation of the explosion phenomena is facilitated by expressing the rate of mole change in the flame front in terms of elementary parameters. This expression is developed by examining the components of spatial-flame velocity.

Overexposure to respirable dust remains a widespread health hazard to roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines. Recently implemented mist drilling technology was evaluated for its effectiveness in controlling respirable dust exposures for roof bolting personnel. This work presents the findings from NIOSH field and laboratory studies comparing respirable dust levels on mist drilling roof bolter machines to dust levels measured on machines using a conventional vacuum drilling system. Gravimetric and instantaneous respirable dust samples were collected for multiple drilling cycles. These dust measurements were used to assess the potential dust control capabilities relative to conventional drilling. Controlled laboratory tests found 0.3 mg/m3 more respirable dust with mist drilling than with the conventional vacuum method. A separate field investigation of the two techniques observed higher dust levels around the mist bolting machine.
