The Vernal phosphate rock concentrator is located in the Uinta Mountains near Vernal, Utah. Ore is sedimentary rock from the Phosphoria Formation. Truck and shovel mining is done at a rate of 11,500 TPD. Run of mine ore is crushed and then milled through a SAG mill and ball mill to minus 16 mesh. Milled ore is deslimed using cyclones and hydrosizers. Sands are conditioned with fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate, diesel fuel and frother prior to primary rougher and cleaner flotation. Primary flotation tailing is milled to 95% minus 48 mesh, deslimed in cyclones, conditioned using reagents previously described, and then processed through rougher and cleaner scavenger flotation. Product of scavenger cleaner concentrate is upgraded by reverse flotation of dolomite. Flotation concentrates are combined and dewatered, pulp being milled to 99.5% minus 65 mesh and then thickened to 65% solids. Product is pumped from storage through a 10 inch, 94 mile pipeline to a conversion plant at Rock Springs, Wyoming. Mill tailing is stored behind an earthen dam, water from the settled tailing being reclaimed for mill use.

Longwall mining has gained acceptance as a safe method of maintaining coal production where conventional systems were unsuccessful or uneconomic due to bad roof conditions (Kuti8). One of the major problems confronting American operators involves the correct choice of equipment which should be selected to suit the local mining and geologic conditions for optimum productivity. To achieve this, factors such as rock strengths, local geology, panel geometry, and panel orientation must be examined to optimize production and minimize down time due to ground control problems. Little quantitative information is available in the literature regarding the effects of geologic conditions on American longwall operations, and past implementations of longwall systems appear to have been based largely on experience. When mining engineers are able to assess the geologic conditions both quantitatively and qualitatively, they can more fully optimize equipment selection and panel design.

In 1980 the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority contracted for three miles of cut and cover box structure and station construction in Main Street, Buffalo, New York. Project depths ranged from 30 feet to 60 feet below street grade. Soils, Figure No. 1, consisted of loose to very compact sands and gravels. Ground water level was generally 20 feet below grade. Specifications required a soldier pile and timber lagging support system with external dewatering. Soldier piles were to be installed in prebored holes with bentonite slurry and lean concrete backfill. Conventional pile driving was not allowed due to concerns over excessive noise and vibrations and its effect on nearby historic structures and the surrounding population

ALTHOUGH discovered as long ago as 1817, by Strohmeyer, the use of cadmium did not become in anyway general for nearly a century. Its properties, although well known, did not recommend it to users of metals generally, and it was, on the whole, regarded more in the light of a nuisance to zinc producers than anything else. Its real value was not appreciated until both the United States of America and Germany, who are entirely dependent on outside sources for their supplies of tin, were faced with the unpleasant fact that their tin stocks were being rapidly depleted, with practically no prospect of having them replenished. This resulted in serious efforts being made in the UnIted States of America to conserve what tin was available, and, as a consequence, several metals were tried in the hope that they would prove satisfactory substitutes for tin. Among these was cadmium, and it was found that cadmium could replace tin in a manner sufficiently satisfactory to permit of its use in many directions where tin had been used before.It is on this ability of cadmium to replace tin that its use became in any way general at first; but since then new avenues of development have been opened up in which its physical and chemical properties are proving their value. It is highly probable that its use will extend very considerably as time goes on. OCCURRENCE OF CADMIUM.There are several cadmium minerals known, but none of them occur in profitable quantities as ores. The cadmium of commerce is derived almost entirely from zinc minerals and ores in which it is almost invariably present in proportions which are usually very small. Cadmium behaves metallurgically almost the same as zinc, and hence constitutes a fraction of 1% of almost all spelter.

By focusing on the key areas: geology; mine design; waste dumps; stockpiles; metallurgy; weather data; tailings disposal; using contours, block models, mine plans, process flowsheets, design criteria, operating and control strategies, maintenance schedules, and operating costs to perform detailed daily simulation from start-up to shut-down; a comprehensive understanding for all disciplines is achieved. Construction of a METSIM model that includes all test work and project data from drill holes through net present value calculations brings the pieces together to achieve optimum process design, minimize operating problems and eliminate the term ?black box? from project meetings and discussions.

DURING the course of an investigation of the plastic flow of aluminum aircraft sheet under combined loads, several problems arose in which analyses of the conditions leading to unstable plastic flow were needed. In order to provide these analyses, and in the hope of attaining a better understanding of the general problem of unstable plastic flow, the present study was undertaken. It is well known that unstable plastic flow is associated with a form of mechanical instability frequently observed during the plastic deformation of ductile metals. This instability is characterized by the fact that, at its onset, plastic straining will proceed at a constant magnitude of the externally applied forces. It is further typical that the resulting unstable flow is generally accompanied by the formation of a neck, a local bulging, or some other form of heterogeneous deformation. Perhaps the most familiar example of unstable plastic flow to the metallurgist is the formation of the neck in the ordinary tension test. It is well known that in this test most metals exhibit a maximum in the externally applied load, followed by the process commonly referred to. as "necking down." Instability in the simple tension test has been frequently discussed and numerous investigators 1,2.3,12 have derived the criterion for instability in terms of a critical rate of strain hardening. It is the purpose of the present study to extend the criterion for unstable flow to the more general case where the body undergoing flow is subjected to combined loads. It is hoped that the problems considered will provide a more consistent picture of the general features of this important form of mechanical instability. The most practical implications of instability in plastic flow arise in connection with sheet metal forming operations. In the formation of a great many sheet metal parts, the deformations are produced primarily by stretching. If the conditions which lead to unstable flow are fulfilled in such a formation, and if the resultant instability leads to a pronounced localization of flow, then the useful limit of ductility of the material will have been reached. It is also essential that the effects of instability be taken into consideration in any study of the plastic flow and rupture of metals under combined stresses. In general, when unstable plastic flow is initiated, straining becomes localized, the geometry of the test specimen changes, and the state of stress in that portion of the specimen undergoing plastic flow is no longer under external control. At the De Beers Consolidates Mines operations it is common practices to perform Geotechnical mapping of the newly exposed faces in the waste and ore rock. The purpose of Geotechnical mapping is to quantify the in-situ fracturing of a rockmass that in turn is required during the planning and application of a mining method. Whether it is to determine slope angles, caveability, impact of blasting or support requirements. This mapping involved a cumbersome and time consuming procedure that requires individual examination and description of the natural inherent fractures exposed by mining. During highwall mapping in an open pit this can be a safety concern due to the duration of time spent below a highwall. The advantages gained through the recent introduction and application of SiroVision® allows safer mapping, an increase in statistical fracture population, archiving of rock faces and the more accurate reflection of the true mapping. This paper aims to describe in detail the application of the recently developed SiroVision®, photogrammetry software, to replace conventional face mapping. Dies kann auf Grund des Zeitraumes der unterhalb einer Flözoberschicht verbringt wird zu einer Frage der Sicherheit werden wenn die Aufzeichnung einer Flözoberschicht im Tagbau erfolgt. Die Vorteile auf Grund der jüngst erfolgten Einführung und Anwendung der SiroVision® gestatten sichereres Aufzeichen, eine Zunahme in der statistischen Menge an Gesteinsbrüchen und eine akkuratere Reflektion der tatsächlichen Aufzeichnungen. Diese Arbeit hat zum Ziel im Detail die Anwendung der kürzlich entwickelten SiroVision®, eine photogrammetrische Software, die die konventionelle Abbauortaufzeichnung ersetzen soll zu beschreiben.

The oil industry in Kentucky during the year 1937 shows some improvement over that of 1936, although not to as marked a degree as 1936 over 1935. Oil in Eastern Kentucky In eastern Kentucky more than 150 new inside wells were completed in the pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties. Also, a number of wells were completed to be used as intake wells in repressuring operations. Repressuring is proving more successful in this area than was expected, as the producing formation was the Corniferous limestone. However, when the repressuring work was started, cores taken of this formation showed that the oil in the second and third pays was from a true sand, only the first pay in the top being a sandy lime formation. In the Weir sand fields of Magoffin, Johnson and Lawrence Counties, continued repressuring operations caused an increase in the quantity of oil. These operations and the completion of 20 new wells in the Maxon sand and the Big lime (Mississippian) in Martin and Floyd Counties produced an increase in the oil production from eastern Kentucky of 100,000 bbl. over that of 1936. As an illustration of what may yet be done in the fields of eastern Kentucky, one repressuring operation involving four oil wells and one pressure well produced an increase in production, or an additional recovery of 7200 bbl. of oil during the year. This amounts to a recovery of 2000 per acre for the 3.6 acres involved. In other fields of eastern Kentucky, as in the Corniferous pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties, increases in the runs are noted as follows: In the area of the Estill County pool from which the oil passes through the Revena pumping station, the production in 1935 was 88,175 bbl.; in 1936, was 102,849 bbl.; and in 1937 was 107,704 bbl. The general-purpose nature of a digital computer ensures its applicability to a wide range of tasks whereas an analog simulator is confined to the one specific use for which it was designed. Introduction Mining has always been sensitive to the fluctuating income of downstream customer industries. The industry is now becoming more vulnerable to booms and busts as economic pulsations increase and demand for mining products shows little or no long-term growth. As the general economy has become more cyclical in the last decade, the capital-intensive primary industries have become more aware that timing as well as preparation of survival plans are vital in investment decisions. Strangely, however, some of us have not yet included the business cycle in our feasibility studies. Cyclic prices and volumes and fluctuations in profits and cash flows do not fit our linear models. The increased cyclical nature of our economy is recent and poorly understood. Forecasting peaks and troughs is still more an art than a science. Nevertheless, avoiding business cycle parameters can lead to error in value estimation and contingency planning of new projects. Metal and Mineral Industries More than half the iron and steel, aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, tin, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, and chrome that we mine, smelt, upgrade, and recycle goes to construction, transportation, capital goods, and consumer durable industries. All are cyclical. Their products are consumed slowly, so replacement can be postponed in recessions. Purchases of such goods are usually financed by debt, and their customers are sensitive to highly cyclical changes in interest rates. During prosperous periods, people tend to buy capital goods despite high interest rates. Upstream industries also tend to be whipsawed by inventory cycles. With high interest rates and good transportation, downstream fabricators can lighten their inventories during recessions. They know that upstream suppliers can deliver supplies and raw materials immediately, And, with the advent of electronic accounting, the fabricator with timely inventory information can afford to hold fewer contingency stocks. Likewise, when recovery returns, inventories surge back through industry pipelines, accelerating demands on primary supplies. The price elasticity of most primary products is low. Their share of the value of finished products of the industries they supply is generally small. The 60 kg (130 lb) of aluminum in a car is vital. But whether it costs $80 or $130 will not visibly influence the demand for an automobile. With low elasticities of demand, the primary producer is hit with decreases (or increases) in prices and in sales volume, during recessions as well as recoveries.

In the last several years we have seen the demise of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy at the University of Melbourne, the removal of extraction metallurgy from the Department of Metallurgy and incorporation of it within a School of Mines at the University of New South Wales, and the joining of a small Department of Metallurgy with a Department of Chemical Engineering to form a Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Newcastle. Most of these changes have been forced by the logical application of the principles of accounting, the currency for such accounting being the Whole Student Unit (WSU). It is not my intent to address the problem of attracting young people into courses in metallurgy (including extraction metallurgy) which, at present, is the only way to introduce black ink into the WSU accounting ledger. Rather, I wish to express my disquiet over the trends, illustrated by some of the above occurrences, of separating out extractive metallurgy from METALLURGY by suggesting in broad terms how a course in metallurgy should be structured. I firmly believe that the mechanical metallurgist and materials engineer need an exposure to chemical and extractive metallurgy; similarly, the extractive and process metallurgist should, in my view, have a good grounding in the interrelationships between composition, structure, and properties, this topic being the core of the basic subject physical metallurgy.

The Soo Locks, which date back to the 1800s, are the major cargo connection point between Lakes Superior and Huron. The locks allow the movement of approximately 86 million tons of freight annually through the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway and the international markets. Considered a feat of engineering, the locks raise and lower boats to allow passage between the two Great Lakes using a series of gates and chambers that are powered solely by gravity, without the use of any pumps. The Soo Locks are currently made up of the Poe, MacArthur, Davis and Sabin locks. The Poe Lock, the most utilized of the four, was rebuilt in the 1960s to accommodate larger ships. Currently, approximately 90% of the commodities transported through the Soo Locks are restricted to the size of the Poe Lock. The MacArthur Lock, the southernmost lock, is also currently operational. Neither the Davis nor the Sabin Lock are currently in operation.

The Silver King vein is the largestvein deposit in the area and has produced lead and zinc, in addition to 74,000 ounces of silver during its history.A total of forty three veins containing silver, lead and zinc are now known, all of which were discovered by prospectors within 10 years of the first vein being recognized.

Há uma bibliografia farta no que diz respeito à temperatura de bobinamento e seus efeitos nas propriedades mecânicas e na microestrutura do aço plano laminado a quente. Contudo, pouco se encontra sobre a influência das taxas de resfriamento pós bobinamento nas propriedades mecânicas e na microestrutura do aço, especialmente nas propriedades finais de materiais que são submetidos à laminação a frio e recozimento. O tempo médio de resfriamento com água é de dois dias. Já o tempo para resfriamento com ar é de sete dias. Estudou-se o efeito das referidas taxas na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas para um determinado aço tanto após a laminação a quente como após a laminação a frio e recozimento.

Explosive casting of overburden is defined as the use of explosives in blasting to move overburden to a spoil pile without rehandling. Studies of the economic feasibility of the method, and the formulation of a design hypothesis involving rock properties, and blasthole geometry are presented. These studies indicate that if technical feasibility can be demonstrated to increase surface coal production, considerable economic advantage would accrue to coal mine operators.

In the Pennsylvania anthracite region, the principal source of U.S. anthracite, refuse disposal problems are common since cities and towns are located over the anthracite measures. The Bureau of Mines surveyed refuse banks in the area, determining that 863 banks containing aver 910 million cubic yards of material occupy a total area of about 19 square miles. The vast bulk of the refuse is located within 2 miles of the traffic centers of incorporated c unities which have a total population of 625,000. Twenty-seven banks are burning, causing considerable distress in a number of communities.
