Indonesia is a fast growing democratic developing country comprising more than 17,000 islands, founding member of ASEAN and a member of the G-20 major economies. It is one of the most highly mineralised countries in the world, the mining sector playing a pivotal role in the country's economy. In 2001, the Decentralization Law No. 22/1999 came into force and caused a transfer of authority and responsibility from central to regional and local administrative governments. The new Mining Law of 2009 substituted its 40 year old predecessor, but lacked detailed regulations for its implementation. These were only issued in 2010, which lead to a period of great uncertainty for investors in the mining industry. The new legislation intends to foster domestic economic development, which may be interpreted as protectionist policy. For the development of a sustainable mineral resources policy, further endeavours will have to be made.

Record quantities of slag were produced in 1974. Slag usage in this year amounted to 8.5 mega tonnes for granulated blast furnace slag and 7.7 mega tonnes for crushed blast furnace and L.D. slags. Granulated blast furnace slag is mainly used as a hydraulic bonding material in the manufacture of cement and in road construction. These applications give a fuel saving and reduce processing costs. Crushed blast furnace and L.D. slags find application as a substitute for natural aggregates in road construction and in the production of concrete. There is no doubt of ttie interest to utilise to the maximum all the slag produced by the steelmaking industry, thus preventing the build up of slag heaps detrimental to the environment and favouring the disposal of the heaps formed in the past. World wide efforts are being made to achieve this objective.

THE value of carbon ratios in determining the boundaries of possible oil deposits appears to have passed the hypothetical stage. The theory that the ratio of fixed carbon in pure coals is an, invariable index of incipient metamorphism in both, surface and underground rocks and that it may be applied in defining the limits of petroleum, advanced by David White,1 has been received with keen interest by many petroleum geologists. Detailed isocarb maps have been prepared of the Pennsylvanian area of North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma by M. L. Fuller.2 A similar map of the coal-bearing area of West Virginia is given here. An isocarb3 is a line showing an equal fixed-carbon percentage, pure coal basis; the term has been proposed by David White to supersede a less expressive nomenclature. The term carbon ratio is applied to the percentage of carbon in pure coal after water and ash have been eliminated. As a comparatively small number of analyses have been made on this basis, it is usually necessary to compute the ratio by dividing the fixed carbon of the proximate analysis by the sum of the fixed carbon and volatile matter of the same analysis. THOMAS CROWE,* Victor, Colo.-The interest manifested of late in the treatment of low-grade ores, together with Mr. Clevenger's discussion of the Mill and Metallurgical Practice of the Nipissing Mining Co., prompts me to acid a few remarks relative to concentration in connection with cyanide treatment of low-grade ores. Mr. Clevenger in this discussion does not condemn concentration in this connection, but, nevertheless, the tone of his remarks would lead one to believe that his conclusions are like those of many others: that concentration is often turned to as a last resort in an attempt to improve or obtain an extraction upon an ore by the recovery and sale of the refractory portion of the ore. This, I will attempt to point out, is not always the case. Concentration in connection with cyanidation often performs an entirely different function, i.e., one of saving fine grinding. Economy being the keynote of successful treatment of low-grade ores, the problem often becomes more commercial than metallurgical, and, as there is generally a definite ratio existing between cost of operation, degree of comminution, and percentage of extraction, the grade of ore under treatment usually imposes a limit upon these factors. With many ores grinding is the most expensive single item in their treatment; therefore, the degree of comminution is very apt to be governed by the allowable cost of operation. With most ores the degree of comminution controls to a great extent the percentage of extraction. So in the treatment of low-grade ore it often becomes necessary to sacrifice extraction, through coarse grinding for the benefit of cost, in order that the greatest ultimate profit may be obtained, and it is under these conditions that it is, possible for concentration to play an important part in overcoming to some extent the effect of mesh. The precious metals occurring in an ore are usually closely associated with the metallic portion of the ore, and as this metallic portion is generally fairly well liberated from the gangue at comparatively coarse meshes, further grinding of the ore is necessary only in order that the metallic portion may be reduced sufficiently fine that the precious metal part of it may be dissolved by cyanide solutions in a reasonable length of time.

The Peirce-Smith converters are traditionally carrying out the converting process of a copper matte in the smelters of Codelco-Chile. However, its production increment is very limited due to the investment magnitude associated to the fulfillment of the environmental regulation. The objective of this paper is to present the Codelco continuous converting process technological advance when converting mattes and/or white metal into blister copper in a Teniente converter unit as an alternative to increment the corporative anode copper production. In 1994, Codelco-Chile started evaluating its ?home made technology? as an alternative to the traditional batch-type converting process. By the year 2001, the Caletones smelter converted liquid white metal to blister copper in a rearranged PS converter continuously. Then, during the 2001-2003 period, several pilot and industrial scale tests were done in a Teniente converter unit at Codelco Norte smelter, evaluating the continuous converting process, i.e., processing liquid mattes (62-68% Cu) to blister copper, demonstrating its technical feasibility with: (i) both constant production of gas flow and SO2 concentration, (ii) production of liquid slag, and (iii) production of a clean blister copper, suitable for the refining process. The promising results have led Codelco-Chile to plan for the 2006 period, a next advanced stage for the continuous converting process evaluation by carrying out a new campaign of tests in a Teniente converter unit at the Codelco Norte smelter.

Tooth-wear on mining shovels requires continuous monitoring. Worn teeth impede excavation performance, increase energy usage, and increase the risk of lost or broken teeth and adapters. A machine-vision-based automated tooth-wear monitoring system is presented. The system employs a rugged boom or stick-mounted camera to capture images of the shovel teeth. An onboard computer processes the images in real-time to determine the length of each tooth. The current wear state is available via a network-accessible log for on-demand status updates. By continuously recording tooth length changes over time, the logs can be used to estimate wear rates and patterns, permitting comparisons between different G.E.T. configurations, operator behaviour patterns, or material types. This detailed, quantitative data permits site-specific optimizations to wear packages and maintenance scheduling. Automating wear monitoring offers the crucial wear information necessary to minimize maintenance costs and reduce unscheduled downtime. A 37-day field trial in a copper-gold mine demonstrated the ability of the system to measure tooth lengths, compute wear rates, and detect differences in tooth wear based on their position on the bucket.

THE TERM "engineer" has been defined in many ways by many men broadly speaking the statement that "an engineer is one versed in or practicing any brar1c.h of engineering" is sufficient. A rather close relation exists between the sciences of surgery and engineering. A successful surgeon must have the capacity to perform the most delicate work, under extremely circumscribed conditions. This portion of his education is purely mechanical and although marvellous in itself, it must remain secondary to that greater possession, a thorough knowledge of human anatomy coupled with a comprehensive understanding of human psychology. In sub- stance, the surgeon must not only know how to operate but what is more important, he must be able to decide when, if ever, the operation should be undertaken.

At the present time there are over 5,000 Kms of railway tunnels in existence throughout the world. In many cases these tunnels were built over a century ago using techniques obsolete today. Supervision and maintenance of these tunnels is essential to the economy of each country involved. For this purpose an electro-optical measuring system has been designed incorporating highly complex soft and hardware (15 mW laser, high resolution TV camera and processing computer), mounted on a vehicle. Its job is to scan, record and compare sectional gauge values (profiles) and strains inside tunnels both momentarily in situ and on permanent record, as an aid to the supervision work. From the state of the strains observed, in conjunction with an infrared spectrum of the tunnel lining and soil involved, the mechanical stresses in the tunnel can be deduced by applying the boundary elements method.

The Bureau of Mines is often called upon to analyze the demand for various minerals and fuels and to make projections of the future demand. Because minerals and fuels are raw materials and because the demand for raw materials [pends] on the demand for finished goods, these projections are usually [conned] with derived demand rather than final demand. In order to obtain quick [d] reasonably accurate analyses of the demand for mineral commodities, the [reau] developed a method and has used it successfully (31).4 To illustrate the [thod], this report presents a full analysis of the demand for a mineral commodity with enough general theory to permit application of the method to any mineral. Sodium chloride (common table salt) was chosen as the subject of the analysis because the demand for it is less complicated5 and permits a simple application and clear presentation of the method.

En este sentido, el uso de geosintéticos revolucionó el diseño de los relaves y sistema productivos y permitió un mejor manejo ambiental de los relaves. Asimismo, la utilización de gaviones como paramento externo en el sistema suelo armado, otorga mayor rigidez al mismo en el caso de paredes, taludes más verticales, drenaje y protección contra la erosión. En consecuencia, el uso de gaviones y geomallas es aplicable para la construcción de depósitos de relave y estabilización de depósitos inactivos.

Self-diffilsion coefficients for cr51 and Fe55 in 12 pct Cr-Fe and 17 pct Cr-Fe for Fe55 in chromium, and for Cr51 in vanadium have been measured. The results are compared with other values for the Fe-Cr system, and with the various theories of diffusion in hcc metals. Some empirical correlations are discussed between Do and Q in hcc systems, or, expressed differently, the constancy of ?G*/T solidus for seveval bcc metals and alloys is noted. It appears very probable that a vacancy mechanism is operative in bcc metals, hut this cannot he stated with certainty. THE great bulk of work on diffusion in metals, both experimental and theoretical, was for many years concentrated on those with close-packed and, in particular, fcc lattices.1,2 There appears to be little doubt that the mechanism of diffusion in these solids is vacancy migration, leading to mass transfer and in substitutional solid solutions to a Kirken-dall effect.3,4 For bcc metals, the picture is much less clear. The Kirkendall effect certainly occurs in several alloys.5-10 However, attempts to understand the factors contributing to the pre-exponential in the usual expression for the diffusion coefficient D =D, exp {-Q/RT) by extension of ideas useful in close-packed lattices have not always been successful. Zener,11 Leclaire,12 and Pound, Paxton, and Bitlerl3 have suggested that various forms of ring diffusion may be important in some bcc metals. For close-packed metals, Do is usually about 1 sq cm per sec and Q - 35Tm kcal per mole (Tm = melting temperature in OK). The theory of Pound et al. suggests for ring diffusion that Do may be about 10-4 and Q, although difficult to calculate with any precision, would be significantly less than 35 T,. The experimental results on self and solute diffusion in ? uranium14,15 and ß zirconium,10 and for solutes in 0 titanium,17 and possibly for self-diffu- sion in chromium below about 0.75 T,," gave some credence to this theory. However, not all bcc materials display low values of DO and Q, and the exceptions were not predicted by any theory. Furthermore, it has recently become apparent that, in bcc materials, log D is not always linear with T-l if a sufficiently wide range of temperature is studied.16,18 This variation may be such that Q may increase18,19 or decrease20 with increasing temperature. The present work was undertaken in an attempt to provide further diffusion data on bcc metals, and to try to understand the factors which contribute to differences in behavior between the various elements. For part of this work, the Fe-Cr system was chosen since it is of considerable technological importance, and data on 12 pct Cr and 17 pct Cr alloys appeared well worthwhile to supplement that existing for the remainder of the stern.18,22 The diffusion of Fe55 in chromium was studied as an example of a more or less "normal" tracer element in a possibly abnormal host lattice. Finally, no data were available for vanadium, the neighbor of chromium in the periodic table, because of lack of a suitable isotope so cr55 was used as a tracer in a few preliminary experiments. For convenience, we shall refer to elements whose Do and Q are low compared to those predicted by Zener's theory as "anomalous". PROCEDURE This investigation determined self-diffusion rates by means of radioactive tracers and the integral-activity method first utilized by Gruzin.23 In this method a thin layer of radioisotope of the diffusing element is plated or coated onto a planar surface of the diffusion sample, which is then given an isothermal-diffusion annealing treatment. The determination of an activity-penetration curve involves measuring the residual activity of the specimen after each successive layer or section has been removed parallel to the original planar surface. The method used here is essentially the same as that used by Gondolf18 and Kunitake.21 Two radioactive tracers, cr51 and Fe55, were used in this investigation. Diffusion coefficients were determined for the diffusion of one or both of these tracers in four different materials, viz., Fe-12 wt pct Cr alloy, Fe-17 wt pct Cr alloy, chromium, and vanadium. The diffusion samples had nominal dimensions of 1.5 cm diameter and 0.5 cm thickness. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. In the oxidized ores cllprite, tenorite, and trace brochantite have been found.

"Shale gas has become an increasingly important clean energy, which has been explored worldwide in recent decades. Supercritical CO2 acts as fracturing fluid for shale gas production. The safety monitoring is essential to prevent any kinds of leakage from the reservoir as the supercritical CO2 physically stored hundred kilometres underground. Seismic tomography is an imaging technique that uses induced seismic waves to create three dimensional images of the subsurface. It is an effective monitoring method to evaluate the caprock integrity in the carbon dioxide sequestration storage (CCS). In this experimental research, a simulated uniaxial compressive load is applied on a granite sample to analyze the stress redistribution for long-term in-situ caprock integrity during CO2 injection. The induced seismic waves are recorded and seismic events are traced based on the Geiger algorithm. The frequency of seismic events correlates with the caprock failure evolution. The acquired seismic data is divided into four regimes based on the frequency of seismic events and the failure process to examine the failure evolution. Furthermore, the travel time and distance is plotted to analyze the variation of velocity. Finally, the double difference tomography (TomoDD) algorithm using arrival time is adopted to recalculate the locations of seismic events and velocity structure in each regime. The results indicate that the passive seismic system can map the caprock stress distribution and allow for imaging of the caprock integrity. TomoDD exhibits sound improvements to relocate seismic events both in relative and absolute locations as well as to characterize the local velocity structure. The study further reveals that seismic monitoring along with TomoDD could evaluate the caprock failure accurately in the CCS.Introduction To reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) has been suggested to as a means of continuing to use fossil fuel resources while offsetting their negative environmental impacts (Eiken et al 2011). A positive CCS project should retain 99% of the injected supercritical CO2 (pressure is greater than 7.38 MPa and temperature is above 31.04? and a density is of about 700 kg/m3) over at least 100 years (Davidson et al 2005). As large quantities of supercritical carbon dioxide are being injected into full scale storage projects, caprock stress is redistributing and the leakage could occur anywhere over a wide storage area (Hou et al 2012). Acoustic waves are emitted from the caprock, as it fractures due to the CO2 injection, which can be detected by passive seismic sensors (Shitashima et al 2013). Tomography techniques are advantageous for imaging the integrity of the caprock in the CCS projects. Velocity tomography uses waves to model entities based on the arrival time of waves (Westman et al 2001, Westman 2004, Luxbacher et al 2008). Seismic tomography is a data inference technique that exploits information contained in seismic records to constrain 2D or 3D models of the Earth's interior. It generally requires the solution of a large inverse problem to obtain a heterogeneous seismic model that is consistent with field observations (Kudryavtsev et al 2012)."

The feasibility is demonstrated of reconstructing the volumetric distribution of liberated particles and middlings by use of a damped, weighted least-square regularisation method. This allows a precise mass balance to be obtained around a separation/concentration unit, permitting evaluation of the partition curve (Tromp curve) of the separator. Areal grade measurements are made on polished sections of feed, concentrate and tailings and a kernel-based inversion technique is then used to obtain the volumetric grade distribution of the three assemblages. A plain kernel (number of occurrences) and a weighted kernel (each occurrence counted with its area) are used for the solution. Testing of the method on computer-generated synthetic areal grade measurements indicates that it offers a valid alternative to the tedious conventional procedure of conducting experiments with heavy liquids

THE copper-silver system presents several points of special interest in the study of segregate structures. The system is simple eutectic, with limited solid solutions terminal with the pure component metals. The extent of solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature for both the copper-rich and the silver-rich alloys, thus offering a possibility for the formation of Widmanstätten figures and also a possibility for aging after quenching. In contrast to the structures studied previously the structures in this system are unique in their origin, for one terminal solid solution will precipitate the other, and vice versa. In most of the other systems for which crystallographic data on the precipitation (or transformation) process are available, either intermetallic compounds or intermediate phases partake in the decomposition process; the absence of such phases thus distinguishes this system. The lattice structures of the two solid solutions are identical in type, differing in lattice spacing by approximately 10 per cent; because of this it seems difficult if not impossible to predict on the basis of present theory either the outward form of the precipitate or the lattice orientation relationships between matrix and precipitate. Ammonium thiosulphate is a non-cyanide lixiviant for gold leaching. The major problem is the high reagent consumption. A combination of 0.3M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03M CuSO4, 3M NH3 was used to leach a copper-bearing gold ore at pH 10.2 for 24 hours. 30 kg/t of thiosulphate was consumed. Oxygen and copper species were found to be responsible for thiosulphate decomposition. The thiosulphate consumption could be reduced to around 17 kg/t by adding chelating agent, reducing copper sulphate concentration to 0.001 M and replacing CuSO4 by NiSO4. The increase of pulp density might reduce the thiosulphate consumption to around 17 kg/t. By regulating the oxygen supply, the thiosulphate consumption could be reduced to 10 kg/t.

"The transition metals tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb) are of significant importance, for example in the nuclear energy sector where they are used as cladding materials, as well as in capacitors and specialized materials. For these applications a high-purity metal is needed. The separation of Ta and Nb is always a challenge since they are found together in nature and have similar chemical and physical properties, resulting in costly and laborious separation processes. A technology that has been used successfully for the separation of these metals entails solvent extraction (SX)1. While separation was achieved in a previous SX study using a sulphuric acid (H2SO4) medium with the extractants diiso-octyl phosphinic acid (PA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), due to the absence of speciation data for Ta and Nb it is not clear how the separation occurred.One method that might be suitable for determining the speciation of a reaction is molecular modelling. Calculations based on the densityfunctional theory (DFT) are now used not only for light elements and small molecules, but also metal complexes, heavy metals, and especially metal separation in SX2. In this study the aqueous phase used during SX was investigated by studying periodic systems of Ta, as a metal and in salt form, when it is in contact with H2O and H2SO4. The results were used to predict the reaction mechanism occurring during SX. Results showed that (i) in a 1:1 acid-water ratio, the deprotonation of H2SO4 was endothermic, (ii) in a 1:5 ratio deprotonation was exothermic forming HSO4 -, and (iii) in a 1:10 ratio double deprotonation occurred to form SO42- exothermically."
