This article deals with the extensive geotechnical soil and bedrock mapping system maintained in the Geotechnical Office of the City of Helsinki since 1955.Soil maps have been prepared to scales of 1:500,1:2000 and 1:10 000, and most recently in 1978 a new type of bedrock map was printed to a scale of 1:10 000, which covers the whole city area and particularly serves rock tunnel construction. A map showing the types of foundation building in the central city area, which will also serve underground construction activities, is currently being prepared. Since the geotechnical mapping system has been well received in Helsinki and the drawing of similar maps has also been undertaken in other Finnish towns, this mapping method is believed to be of interest to foundation engineers and tunnel constructors elsewhere too. THE GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS IN HELSINKI The geological structure of Helsinki, and of all Finland, presents two types clearly differing in character and age; bedrock and soil. The solid bedrock is Precambrian, while the soil dates from the Pleistocene Age and has mainly been deposited during and after the Ice Age. Thus the history of Helsinki only displays very old and very young formations, but nothing in between. The ground level in Helsinki is +62 at its highest and the sea bottom close to shore is -15 at its deepest. The deepest rockhead has been found to lie at the -70 level.

In recent years a great number of papers have been presented at symposiums and have appeared in the literature relative to geologic prediction for rapid excavation and tunneling. Many of these papers describe research projects now underway to investigate tunnel site selection by remote sensing techniques, seismic holography, electro¬magnetic pulse sounding, optical scanning for structural features, and many other exotic geophysical techniques. While it is possible that this research will produce techniques that may prove to be very useful, it appears for the present at least, and perhaps for another decade, that there still will be no substitute for conventional exploration methods such as coring boring, geologic mapping, studies of existing wells, and proven geophysical techniques. Nevertheless, there is still room for tremendous improvement in the conventional techniques for geologic prediction in tunneling. These include: more rapid and accurately aligned coring borings drilled parallel to the tunnel alignment; improved geophysical surveys both prior and during construction; improved methods for predicting ground¬water inflows and water pressures, both of which can greatly influence the cost of driving tunnels. Geophysical techniques can also be ap¬plied to locate deeply incised glacial troughs or ancient buried stream channels that might cross the tunnel alignment. In the meantime, while some researchers continue their efforts to¬ward a breakthrough in new techniques for geologic prediction, it is recommended that other researchers direct their efforts toward sol¬ving specific problems such as accurately predicting ground-water conditions, determining locations of high geostatic stresses, and locations of major fault and shear zones.

Extensive sampling of coal in Illinois during the past 10 or 12 yegrs by the State Geological Survey, in cooperation with various organizations, such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Cooperative Mining Investigations, has made possible the delineation of two areas of low-sulfur coal in the southern part of Illinois. The $fur content is less than 1.25 per cent., so that, if otherwise suitable, these coals can be employed for metallurgical uses and for the manufacture of water-gas and retort gas. One of these areas is small and lies in Jackson County, near Murphysboro, the other is much larger and includes a large part of the famous Franklin County field. A small area of No. 2, or Murphysboro, coal has been worked for many years near the town of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Ill. In two mines, at least, the coal has a sulfur content of less than 1.25 per cent. It is doubtful, however, whether this field will ever be a source of large tonnage as the total area underlain by low-sulfur coal in workable thickness is probably less than 15 sq. mi. (24.14 sq. km.), and a large part of it has already been worked out.. The location of the area of low-sulfur coal in the Franklin County field is shown in the accompanying map. The small area underlain by the Murphysboro low-sulfur coal is shown near the town of that name in the central part of Jackson County. The larger area lies in the west side of Franklin County, extending also about 6 mi. (9.65 km.) south into Williamson County, about 4 mi. (6.43 km.) west into northern Jackson and western Perry County, and northward an undetermined distance into Jefferson County. All but the northern limit of the area is fairly well defined by sampling in numerous mines. The inner cross-lined area is underlain by coal having less than 1 per cent. sulfur, the outer boundary surrounding the area underlain by coal having less than 1.25 per cent. sulfur. The coal mined in the district is No. 6 or Herrin coal, commonly known as the Carterville or Franklin County coal. The bed has a thickness varying from about 8 ft. (2.4 m.) on the border of the low-sulfur area up to more than 10 ft. (3 m.) in the central portion, locally having a thick-

AS you have seen, I have hitherto demonstrated to you the methods for bringing to their proper and pure bodies all metals of any kind of ore that you have found and mined. If these did not now serve human needs all these operations with so much expense and labor would have been profitless and in vain. Therefore I recognize that it is necessary in speaking to touch upon all their operations and to teach you to ma& use of the metals according to the works needed. There are, for instance, some metals that would serve poorly for certain works when reduced to their fineness and perfection. Also, many artificers, in order to avoid expense, are content with having a larger quantity of metals and do not care so much about their perfection. For this reason they willingly accept mixtures of one metal with another, for example, of silver or copper with gold, of copper with silver, and likewise of tin or lead with copper. Tin is accompanied by lead to avoid spoiling its nature completely. All this, however, is done with a definite proportion by weight and not by chance. These admixtures, as I have told you in another place, are called in gold, carats, and in silver, leghe. This, in fact, means nothing but the association of one metal with another, indeed, a soiling of their purity and fineness, to which they have been brought with so much hard effort and labor. But now leaving this discussion, I shall tell you in the present book as briefly as I can, in order, first of the alloying of gold with silver or copper, and then of that of silver with copper.

To the layman or the casual in- vestor, the critical problems in the mining industry appear to rest on the questions of finding and developing an orebody. The high cost of finding a major orebody suggests that the search is the only matter of real concern. However, the resulting operations which hopefully will provide a profit- able return, depend very heavily on the quality of the servicing that the particular industry receives. Once the mining venture has been established with the necessary plant, equipment and infrastructure, the routine servicing becomes an important function of the operations.

INTRODUCTION THE users of barite in the United States derive their supply partly from the domestic production and partly from the imports from foreign countries. According to the Mineral Resource division of the U. S. Geological Survey, the domestic production of barite in 1913 was 45,298 short tons, valued at $156,275, or $3.45 a ton, and the imports of crude barite were 35,840 short tons, valued at $61,409, or $1.71 a ton. These figures clearly show a decided advantage in cost of the foreign over the domestic barite to users in the United States. The difference in cost is the only advantage to the consumer of foreign barite, for there are large reserves of the mineral in the United States of good grade. The production of many of the operating mines is capable of decided increase, and it is believed that the operating mines together with the large reserves of undeveloped deposits of barite are entirely adequate to meet the demands of the users in the United States. Deposits of barite are known in California, Idaho, Nevada, and Alaska, but most of them are undeveloped because there is, apparently, no market for the .material in that region. The domestic production is derived from Missouri and the Appalachian States, the greater part being obtained from Missouri. Following the outbreak of war in Europe many users of foreign barite in the United States have been forced to seek their supplies at home. It seems opportune at this time, therefore, that a general review be given of the barite industry in the Appalachian States, one of the two areas from which the domestic supply of the mineral is derived, and that attention be directed to the undeveloped deposits in the region. Briefly, then, this paper reviews the barite industry in the Appalachian States, and describes the occurrence, preparation, and uses of the mineral.

The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve planning and development in coal mining, is investigating strata interactions associated with mining of multiple coalbeds. Two common interactions that occur between adjacent coalbeds are subsidence and pillar load transfer. The study described involves underground observations and measurements conducted at two Pennsylvania mines, each affected by one of these interactions. At the mine affected by subsidence, measurements show that undermining had little effect on upper mine pillar stability, but had a more severe effect on the development and maintenance of entries. Roof-to-floor measurements recorded over four times more convergence in entries developed over gob as compared with entries developed over support pillars in the lower mine. At the mine affected by pillar load transfer, Initial in situ measurements have shown the existence of a pressure arch in the lower workings. Prior research has shown that arch interaction between two adjacent openings can create stress concentrations in the in-nerburden. Underground measurements and results obtained from both mine sites correlate with theoretical and photoelastic multiple-seam models, and eventually these field data will serve to refine model accuracy. Further study of multiple-seam interaction mechanisms will lead to improved mine planning, increased resource conservation, and a safer working environment.

The usual figures quoted for water usage in South African gold mines are 1 ton of water used per ton of rock broken, which represents a consumption of 4000 litres of water every second. Owing to the limited sources under ground water, the high cost of surface-water supplies, and the environmental problems of effluent disposal, water IS recycled continuously for underground use. This paper reviews the various types of water treatment and why water needs to be treated. The uses of lime and some flocculants are considered, since much of the mine service water requires only simple neutralization and clarification. Where mining depths necessitate the installation of underground refrigeration plant, more stringent water requirements must be met, and where plant performance is to be maintained, the prevention of system scaling and corrosion is necessary. The families of chemicals added to provide such protection are outlined, together with a description of the mechanisms of control.

In situ experiments at the Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site (NTS) have extended the technology of propellant-based fracturing to include liquid- filled, uncased boreholes. Previous work had developed the technology for liquid-free, uncased wellbores. Test results show that fracturing behavior is considerably more complex in liquid- filled boreholes than in the liquid-free case. Compared to liquid-free boreholes, liquid-filled boreholes have faster pressure risetimes and lower peak pressures, large hydraulic-type fractures propagating several meters beyond the end of the test zone, numerous oscillations in the pressure history, and variable types of fracturing within a single test region. Multiple fracturing is initiated in the wellbore of a fluid-filled borehole when the proper propellant mixture is used but, unlike fluid-free wellbores where up to eight fractures propagate, only one to three hydraulic- and/or shear-type fractures propagate. Hydrodynamic effects involving liquid compression during borehole pressurization appear to be responsible for the differing phenomena observed in fluid- filled boreholes.

The objective of this paper is to show why gravity concentration can be an important part of recovery systems which employ leaching as the primary unit operation. A brief discussion of modern gravity concentration equipment is also presented.

"Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is located in South West Sri Lanka. This project, among many components, involves a 14 km headrace tunnel in very hard and abrasive igneous rocks. The tunnel is under construction by a 4.4 m diameter double shield TBM. The headrace tunnel has already reached 5km milestone and has passed through some reaches of tunnel in very strong intact rocks with no joints. Low penetration at high thrust load has caused frequent stoppages for cutter change leading to low utilization and advance rates due to low cutter life. The original machine was dressed with 27, each 432 mm (17 inch) diameter, 19 mm (3/4 inch) tipped disc cutters. However, various cutter diameters of 432-457 mm (17-18 inch) and cutter tip widths 13 to 19 mm (0.5-0.75 in), have been tried to see if cutter life and penetration rates could be increased. This paper will review the history of the project, the geology of the site, along with TBM performance and cutter life. It will focus on frequency of different cutter failures encountered in various ground conditions. Also, results of using variation of cutter diameter and tip width to cope with the hard rock conditions and their results in increasing machine productivity will be discussed. This allows for better understanding of parameters controlling disc wear/life and leads to better cutter management for more efficient operation of hard rock TBMs in similar conditions. INTRODUCTION The Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) lies in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka. The Multi-Purpose Project Of Uma Oya is planned to convey water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya Basin for hydroelectric energy generation includes Puhulpola RCC Dam on the Uma Oya river, Dyraaba RCC Dam on the Mahatotilla Oya river, a conveyance tunnel from Uma Oya to Mahatotilla Oya (L=3750m), a long feeder tunnel from Mahatotilla Oya to Kirindi Oya river. The feeder (or power) tunnel Lot consists of a 15554 m long headrace tunnel (HRT), the surge shaft and tank on the upstream of the vertical shaft, a 650 m vertical shaft with steel lining, and an underground powerhouse and a 3650m tailrace tunnel (TRT)."

SECRETARY'S NOTE.-The complete list of all officers of the Institute will be found on p. iv. of this number of the Bulletin. The following explanation may recall to old members, and convey to new ones, the relations of the two governing bodies, as determined by the, Certificate of Incorporation of the Institute, and the Constitution and By-Laws adopted in accordance therewith. The body legally responsible for the business management is the Board of nine Directors (three elected annually to serve three years), which elects its own officers. This body, for reasons of practical convenience, is composed of well-known members, residing in New York City, and able to attend, without serious inconvenience or expense, the necessary meetings of the Board. The officers of this Board are legally the officers of the Institute. But, apart from business manage-ment, the Board exercises no control over the election of members, or the professional and technical work of the Institute, except that its vote is required to elect honorary members, upon the recommendation of the Council. The Council is a. body, constituted in all respects (except that it has no Treasurer) like the Council existing before the incorporation of the Institute, in January, 1905, and charged with all duties and powers, except those which the Board of Directors must legally perform. It elects members, appoints the times and places of professional meetings, and controls the publication and distribution of papers and volumes, etc. Its members (President, Vice-Presidents and Councilors) are elected by the members of the Institute, voting in person or by proxy, and after publication of the nominations received ; and it is intended to repre¬sent, as far as practicable, both the professional and the geographical distribution of the membership. Consequently, whatever professional honor attaches to official position belongs to membership in the Council, rather than in the legal Board of Directors. This remark implies no disparagement of the members of the latter body, every one of whom has served, or is now serving, as a member of the Council. But it is only fair to explain that their election and continued re-election as Directors is simply a matter of legal convenience.

The lead and zinc region of SW. Missouri is interesting, not only by reason of the value of its output, which ranges in the neighborhood of ten million dollars a year, but even more because of the facilities which it offers for the study of certain forms of ore-deposits, of' which the loci and genesis are somewhat obscure. Although the mineral species found in the region are few and of common occurrence, crystallization has taken place on a generous scale, and unusual forms abound in many combinations, presenting examples of pseudomorphism, para-genesis, metasomatic replacement and the action of mineral-depositing and mineral-dissolving waters. For the mineralogist, lithologist, and specialist in certain lines of metamorphism, it has peculiar attractions, while the systematic geologist will perhaps find its chief claim to attention in the simplified problem it presents, in the study of ore-deposits. In addition to the phenomena above enumerated, it presents instances of well-developed comb-structure in the ores, fissures and faults, and slickensides—features usually associated with extensive movements in the earth's crust, and believed by some authorities to prove the deep-seated origin of the ores. In connection with these occurrences, the absence of all igneous rocks from this region is noteworthy and significant. For that reason, the simplified case presented by the Joplin region, from which these rocks have been eliminated as a factor, is specially valuable. Having had unusual opportunities to watch the development of this district, I have been deeply interested in the bearing of the revelations of the Joplin mines upon questions of universal importance to the science of ore-deposits; and it was to my great regret that the project of a meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers at Joplin, proposed in 1892, was

O presente trabalho investigou dois aspectos: a pressão ambiente no interior do convertedor e a temperatura do oxigênio no reservatório estagnante. Os resultados mostram que a temperatura de oxigênio apesar de alterar as propriedades de saída desse gás tem pouca influência na penetração de jato. Já a pressão ambiente do BOF tem grande influência na penetração de jato, e leva um dilema nos dimensionais de bocais de lança relativo aos jatos subexpandidos e sobrexpandidos.

The application of a method for analyzing pressure build-up curves to determine the effective permeability in the Spraberry is presented. Sixteen upper Spraberry wells of the Driver area arc analyzed and show variations in the in-place effective permeability of 2 to 183 md. Since these value- are much larger than the .5 md. or less reported for the matrix rock. a large part of the vertical fractures noted in Spraberry cores- must be considered native to the formation. The effectiveness of the well fracture treatment in connecting the well bore to the native fracture system is analyzed by comparison of the effective permeability as determined from the PI test to that obtained from a pressure build-up curve. These results show that the fracture treatment is sufficiently effective in connecting tile well bore to the native fractrure system to yield a flow capacity within about 50 per cent of that dictated by the native fracture system About two-thirds of the wells show some degree of local blockage. INTRODUCTION Fractured reservoirs have been known in the past.' However, during the past two years the Spraberry formation has directed the attention of the petroleum industry to a study of the performance of a fractured reservoir. The large variation in the number of fractures noted in Spraberry cores rile large variation in the producing ability of offset well.. the dramatic effect of well treatment on well ,productivity. the unknown quantity of oil stored in the fractures and matrix rock. and the unknown oil to be recovered were part of the initial Spraberry puzzle. In this type reservoir where the well treatment is an important factor in determining the productivity. it i- particularly desirable to determine the in-place flow capacity of the drainage area at distance* far removed from the well bore. This value. when compared to the flow capacity obtained from a PI measurement, will show the effectiveness of the well treatment (completion. fracture treatment, acidization. etc. in establishing a flow capacity in the vicinity of the well bore equal to that in the more remote region. The object of this paper i.; to show the application of a method of pressure build-up analysis for this purpose in studying the Upper Spraberry formation in the Driver area. STATEMENT OF THEORY The theoretical basis for the application of a pressure buildup curve to show the effective permeability of the rock at distances far removed from the well bore has been presented in detail in earlier publications.', in the previous development it was shown that pressure build-up behavior of all wells could be reduced to the same dimensionless build-up curve of Fig. 1. Foundation and excavation problems associated with lock construction projects vary widely. Each lock requires a different foundation to respond to a unique geologic setting. The range of heights and founding materials are illustrated thru description of selected structures encountered in the United States. Examples range from 113-ft high John Day Lock on the Columbia River founded on basalt rock to the 17-ft high Lock No. 5 on the Arkansas River floated on a clay foundation. A description of the basic elements of design and construction is presented. Several case histories involving lock design and construction are assessed to aid in recognition of potential problem areas on forthcoming construction. In the past decade there have been many improvements in construction materials and techniques. The application of these new approaches to lock construction is discussed.

COAL blending, in the preparation of coal before coke making, is so commonly practiced as to be almost universal. But the reasons underlying this practice, the benefits resulting from it, and the materials used in blending vary widely. This paper will outline the various phases of the subject and present information which may be correlated with work that has been done elsewhere. It will deal entirely with work done on the high-volatile coking coals of the western part of the United States, special emphasis being given to the coals of Colorado and Utah. A surveyL of the 86 coke plants in active operation in the United States during 1949 indicates that only 9 plants, or 10.5 pct of the total, charged one single rank of coal into their ovens, while the remaining 89.5 pcl made use of blending in some form. This report indicated that of these total plants 5 used straight high-volatile coal, 4 used straight medium-volatile coal, 47 used blends of high and low-vola-tile coals, 25 used blends of high, medium, and low-volatile coals, 2 used blends of high and medium-volatile coals, 3 used blends of medium and low-volatile coals. The fact that certain plants operated on a single kind of coal should not be interpreted to mean that no blending was practiced there, for invariably such plants secure their coal from more than one source and in the interest of uniformity do blend the coals as received. The general term coal blending covers two fields, the first of which is the mechanical mixing of a number of coals to secure uniformity. Often it is found necessary to secure coal for coke production from a number of different mines; these coals, though of the same general type or rank, may differ in their chemical composition or in the physical qualities they impart to coke made from them. Again, it is not unusual to find that coal from different sections of the same mine may show variations in quality. Under such conditions it may be necessary, in the interest of a uniform final product, to introduce a system of blending bins, a bedding yard, or other mechanical methods of securing a uniform mixture. Unfortunately this form of blending has received very little attention up to the present time; it has not received the consideration its value merits. The second type of blending, while also for the purpose of coke improvement, deals more particularly with the use of a blending agent differing in character from the base coal: it is this form of blending that will be discussed here. To consider only the western coals, for blending may be found necessary for other reasons with other coals, blending has been practiced experimentally or commercially under the following conditions: 1—When a single coal or mixture of coals of the same rank does not produce a satisfactory coke. For example, a high-volatile coal when used alone is likely to contract when coked so that a comparatively weak coke is formed. Or, if of very low rank, the coal may be deficient in the necessary bitumens required for good coke production. 2—When a product of some special quality is required, for example, when a plant ordinarily producing blast furnace coke must operate at slow coking rate to produce a high-grade foundry coke. Under this condition the reduced daily production of all products which accompanies slow coking time may be undesirable, and the use of some blending agent to increase the size of coke made at faster coking rates may be necessary. 3—When greater yield of coke or its coproducts is needed. Depending upon economic values of the products it may be found desirable to increase the yield of one or the other. 4—When supply of a particular coal must be used, either to protect reserves of high quality coking coal or to utilize a surplus or inferior product not otherwise usable. Hydrometallurgical processing of ore deposits by solution mining or in situ techniques requires the interfacing of technologies as diverse as hydrology, geology, chemistry, and rubblization. This synthesis represents one of the main challenges to in situ processing due to the inherent complexity and vocabulary of these well-developed technologies, and to the general lack of appreciation for the depth of knowledge and endeavor in each separate field. No better example of the need for such interfacing of technologies exists than that of solution mining. How well these technologies interface depends upon the size of the operation and its financial capability to use the information and technology available. It is inconceivable that any one individual can optimize each potential contribution alone; consequently, some areas are usually neglected or simply are not fully appreciated. When one examines what must be done at a future date to develop and exploit a remote solution mining system, it becomes obvious that each discipline must effectively communicate the needed background information to make the project a synthesized whole.
