"Equity Silver Mines Limited owns and operates an open pit silver 111ine located 37 km southeast of Houston in the Omineca District of British Columbia, Figure l. The property is approximately 300 km west of Prince George and 417 km east of the Port of Prince Rupert. This is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the five largest silver producers in the western world.Equity is a subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, which owns 70 of Equity's issued and outstanding Common Shares. Placer was responsible for financing and developing the property and now provides general management and administrative services.All mining is by open pit methods, using three 1600 P&H shovels, eight 45 t Caterpillar and three 77 t Wabco trucks, three 40R rotary drills, two D8 dozers, one 9888 front-end loader and other ancillary equipment. We are now phasing out the Southern Tail pit and bringing the Main Zone into productior; see Figure 2.Comminution in the concentrator is achieved via primary, secondary, and tertiary crushers followed by rod and ball mills. The flotation circuit, with Southern Tail ore, produces a concentrate containing between 3 000 and 6 500 g of silver per tonne, 201 copper, and 25 g of gold per tonne. Running Main Zone ore, concentrate grades will decrease to about 4 500 g of silver per tonne, 17% copper, and 18 g of gold per tonne. Design milling capacity is 5 300 tpd, which is often exceeded.The flotation concentrate contains relatively high levels of antimony and arsenic. Because of these impurities Equity was unable to obtain economically acceptable long-term sales contracts for flotation concentrate. For this reason a leaching process was developed, and a plant designed, built and placed in operation. Due to the complex and unique technology involved, many start-up problems were encountered but by March 1983 the leach plant was considered ""fully operational."" This paper describes some of our progress and problems in bringing the Equity leach plant through its start-up period."

"The results of Mr. Klymowsky's research confirm the essential role played by oxidation products in the flotation of base metal sulphides. They invite a discussion on the subject of aeration which I may open by a brief description of the development and current practice of aeration. The first installation of pre-flotation aeration in Canadian milling practice was undertaken during the years 1928 and 29 at the then new Noranda Mill. C.G. McLachlan and his collaborators demonstrated that the flotation differential between chalcopyrite and iron sulphides was enhanced by aeration in soda ash alkaline pulps. The ores treated contained more than 80 per cent sulphides. It was proposed already then that the products of mineral oxidation assisted copper and retarded iron sulphides, at least pyrrhotite flotation. The concentration of thiosulphates was used as a measure of the progress of oxidation. Several papers by C.G. McLachlan elaborate on this subject.The aerator was also used as classifier since it was held that aeration, i.e. controlled oxidation, should go hand in hand with creation of new mineral surfaces. Grinding mills and aerators were placed in closed circuit. Figure 1. This aeration was essential for successful separation at Noranda.Following the application of aeration at Noranda the technique was applied to existing mills in N.W. Quebec. Impressive improvements in concentrate grades and recoveries were obtained. It was observedthat the zinc flotation benefitted from aeration as much as the preceding copper float. In the late forties and fifties the aerator classifier was installed in new mills associated with the Noranda group. Rock-mass fracturing was measured on oriented drill core and along scanlines in three mines extracting mineralized porphyry deposits. Fracture families identified in the core were consistent with those found along scanlines, but fracture frequency in the core was twice that measured along scanlines. The excess fractures, which occur within 45º of a right angle to the core, apparently are produced during drilling, which implies that fracture spacing in drill core is an ambiguous quantity dependent on the drilling procedures, on the orientation and cohesion of the planes of weakness, and on the actual fractures present in the rock mass.

THE subject of this chapter is the application of the dislocation theory to two problems of physical metallurgy where the theory has been able to give definite predictions that subsequently have been verified by experimental observations. Much of the history of dislocation theory has consisted of the explanation of already established results on the basis of ad hoc assumptions. Scattered bits of fundamental theory were formulated as needed-in particular explanations. The result had the appearance of a hodgepodge of ingenious ideas and exciting but possibly artificial speculations. The review article by Koehler and Seitz in this volume gives an excellent picture of the breadth, diversity, and flexibility that have made dislocation theory attractive to speculative theorists, although occasionally bewildering to others. Since 1950, there have been two developments, which have helped to establish dislocation theory, on the one hand, as a systematic coherent body of theory and, on the other, as a means of making predictions that can be tested experimentally and thereby guide experiment into more fruitful channels. The first and easier of these developments has been the systematic derivation of the classes and properties of dislocations from fundamental crystallographic concepts. The Grand Isle sulfur mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, La. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Co. by the State of Louisiana which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the U.S. Department of the Interior after passage of the Outer continental Shelf Lands Act. The sulfur deposit was discovered in 1949 when Humble Oil & Refining Co. penetrated more than 200 ft of sulfur-bearing limestone in a zone between 1813 and 2075 ft below sea level. In 1954, Humble drilled ten more sulfur prospect holes, eight of which encountered sulfur ore.

"This paper describes some energy reduction measures Implemented at the Griffith Mine. Before proceeding, I will give you a brief overview of the operation.The Griffith Mine is an iron ore mining, concentrating and Pelletizing complex located in the red lake area of northwestern Ontario. The operation is owned by Stelco Inc. And is managed By Pickands Mather & Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Operation of the concentrator commenced in 1968 and it has been producing at a nominal capacity of 1,500 ,000 tons annually.The plant flow sheet is illustrated in this slide. Run of the mine ore is crushed in a single stage 54"" gyratory crusher. Reclaim ore feeders draw from an open stockpile to feed two 32' diameter by 12' long autogenous mills, each driven by 6800 hp. Two s·rages of wet magnetic separation, roughers and cleaners, and primary cyclones complete the primary circuit. Cleaner concentrate is then ground in four 14' diameter by 28' long pebble mills rated at 2000 hp. The secondary grinding circuit is closed by cyclones and fine screens. Secondary cyclone overflow is further upgraded through hydro-separators, finisher magnetic separators and flotation.The magnetic concentrate produced is then thickened, filtered, balled and fired in three vertical shaft furnaces to produce a high quality hematite pellet."

The approval of the U. S. Bureau of Mines when granted to a manufacturer for a gas mask is a certification that the particular device has been submitted to the Bureau of Mines for inspection and test and has been found to meet that bureau's published minimum requirements for safety , durability , and satisfactory performance . Any de- Gas masks are approved by the Bureau of Mines only as a complete unit or assembly of parts , as canister , facepiece and harness . This is in order that responsibility for rigid adherence to the bureau's requirements may be definitely located and not divided . vice marketed under this approval must be a unit composed of parts identical in detail of design , assembly , workmanship , and quality , and produced under the same control and inspection as the original device to which approval has been granted . The particular parts which comprise the approved assembly are designated in a letter to the manufacturer at the time the approval is granted . In recent years they are also specified in the approval plate authorized for use in connection with the sale of the device . Each part permitted in the assembly is legibly marked by name or number for the guidance of users of masks in ordering and identifying approved parts when making repairs , and thereby maintaining their equipment as an approved device . In view of the foregoing , any change in the design of parts or deviation from the permitted assembly of parts would violate the conditions under which approval was granted and the device would not be considered as meeting the approval requirements of the Bureau of Mines . The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been frequently requested to interpret the approval status of a gas mask assembled from parts which have separately met its requirements as components of two or more approved devices but which in the form of a complete unit has not been submitted for tests or been granted approval . Responsibility for the elements and for their proper assembly is in such case divided . Such assembled units have no status as permissible equipment under the Bureau of Mines system of schedules . The reasons underlying this policy are that the approval is granted only to some one who assumes responsibility for the whole and that the details of assembly and coordination of parts are considered to be important to the satisfactory performance and safety of the device .

Wastewater from uranium mines in the Ambrosia Lake district near. Grants, New Mexico, U.S.A., contains uranium, selenium, radium, and molybdenum. The Kerr-McGee Corporation has a novel treatment process for waters from two mines, sections 35 and 36, to reduce the concentrations of the trace contaminants. Particulates are settled by ponding, and the waters are passed through an ion exchange resin to remove uranium; barium chloride is added to precipitate sulfate and radium from the mine waters. The mine waters are subsequently passed through three consecutive algae ponds prior to discharge. Water, sediment and biological samples were collected over a 4-year period and analyzed to assess the role of biological agents in removal of inorganic trace contaminants from the mine waters.

Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it “feels right”. We have developed procedures to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will be suitable for copper heap leaching.

Introduction A close relationship exists between the geologic investigation and the stability analysis of the slopes of an open pit mine. One significant result of this relationship is that the stability analysis is no better than the assessment of pertinent geologic factors that enter into the analysis. In some slope stability problems the engineering solution becomes obvious once the geologic framework is established. In other cases, establishing the geologic framework is only the first stage in the process of analysis. However, even in these cases the geology should not be neglected once the analysis is made. The geology should be periodically reviewed when new slopes are excavated. This will help ensure that the basic assumptions for the analysis have not changed and will permit changes when new conditions are encountered. In recent years improved methods of stability analysis have been accompanied by advances in laboratory testing techniques and new knowledge of the shear strength of rock discontinuities. At the same time there have been improvements in field geological descriptions. As more experience is gained in analyzing and predicting the stability of rock slopes, the importance of certain geologic factors has become more apparent. Some of these factors were described in a paper given at the Open Pit Mining Symposium in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 1970 (I). This paper includes many of the points covered at that meeting but with additional emphasis on the significance of the major geologic structures. Other papers given at the South African symposium also considered geological and hydrogeological factors in slope stability analysis (2) (3) (4) (5) (6). This paper first describes the approach to a slope stability problem including assessment of the relative roles of field geology studies, laboratory testing, stability analyses, and continued slope monitoring studies. Next, is described a framework which has been found useful for classifying or separating the several types of slope stability problems encountered in open pit mines. The principal geologic factors in slope stability problems in rock are discussed and brief comments are made on how these factors distinguish stability problems in rock slopes from those normally encountered in soil slopes. The over-riding control of major geologic structures, especially faults, in most slope stability problems is emphasized. The capacity of grinding mills can be maximized by use of measurements of mill power and bearing pressures. The criterion is as follows. If the derivatives with respect to time of the power and bearing pressure signals have the same sign, the volume of the mill load is smaller than the optimum value; if they have different signs, the volume of the mill load is greater than the optimum value. Few attempts have been made to use measurements of bearing pressure in the estimation of absolute values for the parameters that define the state of the mill load (e.g, mass, volume, and dynamic angle of repose) because the bearing-pressure signal is a complex function of these and other parameters. This paper gives a mathematical model that relates bearing pressures to these parameters. The theoretical values obtained from this model are compared with experimental values, and it is concluded that the model constitutes a good description of experimental reality. If accurate measurements of the load supported by each bearing are available, the model can be used in the estimation of the mass of the load in the mill. If independent estimates of the volume of the load or the dynamic angle of repose are available, the other parameter can be estimated from measurements of the bearing loads.

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de se investigar o comportamento do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 em meios contendo íons cloreto. Para tanto, foram realizados ensaios CST com carga e deformação constantes usando meios com concentrações distintas de cloreto de magnésio (MgCl2), em ebulição. Foram realizados também análises química, metalográfica e eletroquímica do material. Após os ensaios de CST, foi constatada a suscetibilidade à CST deste material, além da influência da concentração de íons cloreto na solução. Essa constatação foi reforçada após a análise microfractográfica dos corpos de prova ensaiados. A análise eletroquímica do material revelou a evolução de pites em potencial de, aproximadamente, 400mVECS.

The ventilation of coal mines has long been a major challenge for the mining industry. Prior to the 1969 Health and Safety Act, mine ventilation planning was almost entirely handled by individuals in mine operations and engineering who had extensive practical experience. Their background and expertise was sufficient to deal with existing ventilation problems and planning. A recent decline in the number of qualified individuals combined with more stringent state and federal regulations have necessitated a thorough engineering oriented approach to ventilation in mine planning design. To plan for an existing mine, a thorough ventilation survey must be conducted to determine the capabilities of the existing ventilation network. A ventilation survey also provides considerable useful data for long range planning. Essential information such as friction factors, entry resistance, and potential ventilation problem areas is gained from the survey data. With this information a comprehensive computer analysis can be conducted to evaluate alternative mine plans. This evaluation of mine plans is essential to minimize the number of shafts required while still maintaining the quality of mine ventilation. Using an existing mine as an example, this paper outlines a detailed procedure for organizing, con-ducting, and evaluating a ventilation survey. In addition, specific ventilation problem areas are isolated and alternative methods for their solution are considered. Furthermore, a long range mine plan is evaluated and the most feasible variation of the plan is selected.

The application of new and currently practised mining techniques in new areas and at greater depths necessitates considerable and immediate research effort. This effort is aimed at identifying the factors which make a particular method suitable and economically viable in a given geological, structural and operational environment. These factors, together with greatly enhanced knowledge of a deposit at the exploration and planning stage, allow selection of the most appropriate and efficient mining method in a new area such that coal resource recovery is maximised in a cost effective manner. Current research and future requirements for research into mining methods and associated equipment and mine services are reviewed.

O aumento na qualidade do produto, a relação custo-benefício e dentre outras melhorias que a robótica trouxe a uma linha de produção industrial, justificam a procura por parte das grandes empresas em procurar investir na inserção desta tecnologia ou no melhoramento dela em sua cadeia produtiva. Este trabalho teve como principal objetivo demonstrar a aplicação da tecnologia robótica na indústria, em proporções reduzidas e fins didáticos, com a integração de um sistema de controle e automação representado pela plataforma Arduino que atua no controle de coordenadas de um braço robótico em atividades de carregamento e paletização de cargas.

"The treatment of high-grade copper gold-bearing ores is practiced extensively. However, due to low concentration of copper the application of a separate process for copper recovery can make this process uneconomical. The copper, in particular: in oxide minerals, intensively bounds with cyanide during conventional cyanidation. In this case, cyanide is not able to react with precious metals and the consumption of cyanide increases. The resulting copper cyanide complexes have a negative effect on the recovery of gold. Due to decreasing of the process parameters, a repeated use of the recycled solutions can be hindered, especially in the case of heap leaching. The technology of copper removal from the process solutions with simultaneous regeneration of free cyanide from copper-cyanide complex and producing of a saleable high-grade copper concentrate was developed. An important feature of this technology is simplicity, the absence of complex or dangerous operations and the use of common reagents. The choice of equipment depends on the ore treatment option: heap or vat leaching. Also, simpler equipment schemes are available. The studies, tests and industrial practice show that if the concentration of copper can be decreased down to the first numbers of mg per ppm or lower, it is reasonable to maintain the process copper grade in the recycled solutions at 30-50 mg/L. In this case, recycling of cyanide-bearing solutions is unlimited. The regeneration of free cyanide from that of bound with copper and other cyanide complexes is 95-98%. The grade of copper in the concentrate is 55-60%. This technology is an economically competitive option, in particular: with the account of the sales of copper concentrate. The removal of copper has a positive effect on gold recovery, especially during heap leaching. In addition to, this offers significant benefits in reduced costs."

The task of developing controls in the mining and manufacturing industries to give them a tighter grip on operating costs has afforded this author an interesting vantage point for observing certain practices common to both industries. Of course, each of these industries has problems unique to itself, but all industries have many common problems. After all, every industry is a business and every business is concerned with the task of producing its wares as profitably as possible. While many differences between businesses in different industries are known, the author is convinced through experience that the mining industry has much more in common with the manufacturing industry than is generally acknowledged. Four principal questions come to mind in the comparison of mining with manufacturing: How different are the management control methods in these two worlds? How do both industries go about the task of controlling costs? How does the mining industry compare in terms of the effectiveness of its workers? And perhaps most important, what can the mining industry learn from what the manufacturing industry is doing?
