This report is the 25th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations, and the 7th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.3 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1960, and furnishes references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1960 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned can be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Miscellaneous section; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications, Coal programs of the Bureau of Mines extend over the wide range of theoretical and applied studies indicated by the table of contents. Fundamental research on coal structure and on the properties of coal will, over a period of time, increase the general knowledge about coal Which scientists and engineers may use in answering practical questions and in solving problems in the mining and utilization of coal. More applied studies are conducted in connection with the developement and evaluation of new mining techniques and the effective processing and utilization of coal and of coal products. Health and safety activities, analyses of coal being mined, and technical advice and assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems are among the practical services handled by the Bureau.4 5

An approach of geological mapping and descriptive criteria has been used to identify hydrothermal eruption breccias, named the Onemana Breccia. These in part mantle a gold bearing fossil hydrothermal system located on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Whilst eruption breccias are documented from active and recent geothermal centres within the Taupo Volcanic Zone and in Northland their recognition at Onemana is the first confirmed discovery for this lithotype within ancient hydrothermal systems of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone. At Onemana the widespread occurrence of silicification, sinters, volcanic lake sediments, eruption breccias and advanced argillic alteration allows classic hot spring epithermal modelling. The geological setting, distribution, lithological characteristics, hydrothermal alteration and trace element geochemistry of the Onemana eruption breccias are described. These breccias are closely comparable with hydrothermal eruption deposits elsewhere, particularly those in active ore forming hydrothermal systems. Consideration is given specifically to the role of the Onemana Breccia in an exploration strategy for discovering epithermal gold-silver deposits.

Results of large-scale mining experimentation carried on in Stage II of the Anvil Points Oil Shale Research Program, Rifle, Colo., are reported. After a new adit was excavated, over 500,000 tons of oil shale was extracted during a 13-month period by a modified room and pillar method. Experiments in drilling and blasting headings, benches, and crosscuts are reported. Roof-bolting procedures, loading and hauling, and ventilation design are discussed. Results of the extensive investigations carried out by the cooperative industry group and earlier work by the U.S. Bureau of Mines indicate that mining oil shale is technologically feasible.

The annual review of mineral dressing was the subject of considerable discussion at the MBD meeting in New York last February. Because the amount of material now being published is so imposing, it was generally agreed that reviewers should try only to cite the items of importance. In order to conserve even more space, it was agreed to omit bibliographies. In reading these reviews, and those of the past two or three years, one is impressed by the advances in materials handling, the enlargement and the advances in automation of unit process equipment. Although there has been development of a variety of new concentration principles in flotation, magnetic separation, et al., the design of these principles into new plants has not been widespread. The probable reason is that the plants being built today are so large and costly that few are able to face the risk of any significant degree of experimentation. There are exceptions to this; for example, some of the chemical processes, but these are usually because there was no conventional process available. This situation should change in time as the ores amenable to our conventional methods become depleted.

The hardening con-stituent is a nickel-silicon compound.1 The quenching temperature necessary to pro-duce hardening by a subsequent aging treatment is a function of the composition and extends from about 700'C. to ()50'C.; the aging temperature range extends from 400° to 600°C. The work carried out by the authors of this paper was confined to cast alloys having compositions within the ranges of 1.5 to 3.00 per cent Ni; 0.4 to 0.75 per cent Si; balance, copper.

Nearly 30 estimates of the minimum earth stress were obtained from hydraulic stimulation tests in 5 boreholes at depths varying from 0.6 to 4.3 km in jointed granitic rock near the Valles Caldera in New Mexico. This site is located within the transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range provinces. Stresses were determined from open hole hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted with water at pressures up to 48.3 MPa (surface). The virgin bottomhol e temperatures ranged up to 327°C. Pressure records show no evidence of rock breakdown, indicating injection into pre-existing joints. A typical pressure response consists of an early wellbore storage period followed by linear fracture flow, which then evolves into a steady pressure, fracture extension mode. Shut-in behavior is characterized by a sharp pressure drop followed by a more gradual decay. The minimum earth stress shows a general linear trend with depth, increasing with a gradient of 19 MPa/km. A low stress anomaly occurs from 2490 to 3100 m where the minimum stresses are as much as 28 MPa lower.

It is stated by Dr. Tuttle in a paper read before the New Jersey Historical Society, that the celebrated Dickerson mine at Succasunna, Morris Co., N. J., yielded ore, about as early as 1710, for use at the Whippany forge, on Rockaway River, between Rockaway and Boonton. The ore was, for some time, free to all who chose to dig it. The tract embracing the Dickerson mine mas taken up, on account of its minerals, in 1713 or 1714, by John Reading, who sold it in 1716 to Joseph Kirkbride. John Jackson built a forge in 1722 on the Rockaway River a mile west of Dover. The ore here worked was probably chiefly from the Dickerson mine, but a portion may have been Hibernia. Hon. E. D. I bring this investigation to your attention to emphasize the needless waste attendent upon the use of tin plate with an unnecessarily heavy tin coating. With our present knowledge, we are unable commercially to produce coatings as light as the lower weights used in this test. If, however, future research should develop means to this end, the resultant product would meet all practical requirements, and a very considerable saving in pig tin would result. DISCUSSION G. H. Clamer.-—The National Canners' Association is studying the action of fruit juices, etc., on solders. Of course these tests will take quite a long time, and we hope by that time the war will be over and there will be no need for conserving tin for war purposes. Germany for a great many years has prohibited the use of more than 37 per cent. of lead in alloys used in contact with food products. The eutectic composition is 37 per cent. of lead and 63 per cent. of tin; alloys containing more than that percentage of lead have some free lead. J. W. Richards,' South Bethlehem, Pa.—A great deal of conservation can result from the packing of dry foods in cartons and in fiber packages instead of using sheet tin. Many of the boxes used for packing things other than food are frequently made of sheet tin because it prints and lithographs well; these could be made of sheet iron coated with copper or some other substitute metal which prints equally well. The Aluminum Bronze Industry W. M. CORSE,† Mansfield, Ohio.—The conservation of tin, in view of the shipping situation, is one of great importance. Several methods of conservation can be employed: 1. Reduction of the amount of tin in an alloy or compound. 2. Substitution of an entirely different metal or compound for tin. 3. A combination of the first and second methods. The second method is the one that I wish to discuss. Metallic aluminum, has been known for a long time, and its use in copper alloys was discovered about 1855 by Lord Percy. The high cost of production of metallic aluminum retarded its commercial development, and it was not until the discovery of the electrochemical processes for its production that it came to be known as a common metal. I have been particularly interested, for the past few years, in working with the alloy known as aluminum bronze, which is usually composed of approximately 90 parts of copper and 10 parts of aluminum, by weight.

GENTLEMAN: The year 1928 was another in the history of the Institute which was marked by quiet growth and steady progress. The total membership as of December 31, 1928, was 8703 as compared with 8438 on December 31, in 1927. Again the main increase has been in Members and the number of Junior Associates is less. As will be seen also by the Treasurer's report, the increase is reflected in larger receipts for dues indicating that fewer have had to be dropped for non-payment. There has been a gratifying increase in the number applying for reinstatement and it seems clear that interest in and attachment to the Institute has notably increased. The year was signalized by the merging of the Rocky Mountain Club with the Institute which brought to our roll one hundred and forty who were not previously members from among the men who have made the West. It also brought to the Institute a strong tradition of good fellowship and a fund of over $100,000, the interest from which is to be expended so far as may be, for purposes beneficial to the Western states. The Endowment Committee expects to see other and similar funds entrusted to the Institute and the Board has already appointed a special committee to consider all projects for expenditure of the revenue from them. It is felt that with the organization and personnel available in the Institute even modest revenues can be made to yield large returns in the way of scientific and technical knowledge. Within the year also, a third great Division has been organized within the Institute, building on the foundation of the old Iron and Steel Committee. The new Division signalized its independence by joining the Lake Superior Mining Institute in a visit to the Menominee Range in September and by furnishing material for a special volume of 353 pages, "Iron and Steel" Technology in 1928," printed and distributed in December. The Institute of Metals Division held its fall meeting with good attendance as one feature of National Metal Week at Philadelphia in October, and published its volume of Proceedings, running to 836 pages, in August. HAVING previously told you about lodestone, azure, emery, and manganese, things that perhaps belong more properly to the stones than to the metals, the desire has come to me to describe rock crystal as well and, with this, some of the better-known gems, although they are things that are not classified with metals, as far as I know, or even with the serniminerals. In truth, they are neither one nor the other, but they are stones and have the nature of stones. But let them be what they may, in order to avoid straying from the subject we have begun, we shall say that they have mineral properties in their species, as for instance, in respect to their colors. It would seem an error to me if, while I am giving you information on so many other useful things, I did not give you this as well, if for no other reason than because it is a fine accomplishment for a gentleman to have some knowledge concerning gems. Thus since I have proposed to do this, beginning to speak of crystal, I tell you that it is a lustrous, transparent, and limpid stone, composed by Nature with a predominance of wateriness. Thus, contrary to the order of natural things, it has been believed by many that Nature has generated it of pure water by means of a powerful and continuous coldness that always exists in those mountains and places where it is found, for the waters and snows can never melt there because of the great cold. They have tried to prove this opinion of theirs by saying that crystal still retains the nature of frozen water, and that this is. shown not only in its appearance but also in the fact that, like ice, it floats without sinking to the bottom when it is put in water. They also say that it is customary to put it under the tongues of the thirsty on account of the, coldness and moistness which it gives, and that it quenches the dryness of their thirst. But even if all these things were true, as they are not, they do not upon consideration bring us to the conclusion that it is water, because the diamond and the beryl would do the same. Therefore it does not seem to me credible [391 that it is as they claim, for it is a stone generated as such by Nature. This paper summarizes recent developments in computer modelling and estimation technology. Significant improvements in computational and modelling efficiencies have advanced technical computing to the stage where, for the first time, it can be realistically applied to short-term mine planning and production control. Real-time interactive grade estimation of complex shapes, volumes and grade distributions, based on immediate turn-around of production sample grades, is now possible. An added benefit is the ability to produce complete geostatistical estimates which include confidence limits. These can be incorporated into the decision making and risk assessment processes of production control. Why the need for new technology? What is wrong with the conventional methods which have sufficed for the last thirty years? The response is manyfold. They suffer from inefficient computational processes and conflicts with geostatistical theory. They are responsible for constricting the flow of information between the disciplines involved in the mine production process. Finally, it is illogical to approximate irregular geological and mining volumes with orthogonal sets of rectangular blocks. Geological materials do not occur in block formation; and mining methods which excavate rectangular blocks have yet to be developed. Other computer based technologies have evolved out of the dark ages of rectangular approximations and have successfully dealt with irregular three-dimensional geometries. It is time for computing in the mining industry to follow this example and take full advantage of available technology. To provide the necessary background, consider the basic requirements for successful implementation of technical computing within the mine production process.

The paper presents a general background to the subsidence research programme being undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Development in New South Wales. The results of the studies undertaken over the last ten years are summarised. The differences between these results and those obtained by the National Coal Board are discussed. The results of a study carried out on the effect of total extraction beneath a freeway in the southern coalfields are discussed in some detail. The procedures developed for the const- ruction of a 500 mm diameter natural gas pipe- line crossing a number of collieries in the northern coalfields are also outlined. The future direction of the Department's subsidence research programme is discussed.

Notwithstanding the rapidly increasing use of copper, due to the extension of its applications within the last few years, the fact of its continued steady decline in price stands prominently forward. Nor have we far to look for the cause. The opening up of the vast copper-deposits of our Western States and territories is the metallurgical event of the last five years. We must not forget, in looking at the new field, the changed conditions under which the metallurgist must work, as compared with the previous history of copper-smelting. Until quite recently, the copper-plants of the country were few in number; and the concentration of industry implied in this circumstance, allowed many practices which must be considered as inapplicable to the conditions offered at the many mines which have of late become such important factors in our copper-production. Thus the old style of smelting the ore for matte in brick furnaces, involving great expense and time in their construction, while deservedly losing repute even in its old strongholds, in comparison with water-jacketed smelters, is still in some cases adhered to. But to put up such furnaces at Western mines would be out of the question. The large and continual need of brick for relining and repairs acts as an effectual bar, when such furnaces come into competition with the light, portable, and easily managed water-jacketed smelters of improved types. It is owing to the present unusual activity, manifested in the opening up of new copper-properties and the erection of plants for working them, that any improvement in furnace-construction is of especial interest and importance. Sedimentation in highly, flocculated suspensions of fine particles, such as clays, occurs through individual settling units (flocs) that have very open structures and correspondingly low densities (typically less than 5% solids by volume). Such settling processes rapidly lead to the buildup of a bed of flocs that are essentially close-packed, with an inter-floc porosity of perhaps 50%. However, the overall solids content is no more than about 2% to 3% by volume. Consequently, the thickening process is dominated by the bed consolidation rather than by the simple settling of the individual flocs. Experimental measurements of sediment consolidation in flocculated clay suspensions indicate, for a given system, that consolidation rates are essentially determined by the solids concentration and can be evaluated using the classical Kynch treatment. However, these rates are strongly dependent on the physical, as well as the chemical, conditions of the flocculation process. Furthermore, the extent to which gravity consolidation proceeds depends on the total weight of the sediment (i.e., on the bed height and the solids concentration). The implications with respect to thickener operation and the requirements for the laboratory testing for thickener design are discussed.

A quantitative method for predicting the mechanical properties of zinc alloys is proposed on the basis of the molecular orbital calculation of electronic structures. A new parameter which is the s-orbital energy level, Mk , of alloying elements in zinc was introduced into this method. This Mk parameter correlates with the electronegativity and the atomic radius of elements. The compositional average of this parameter varied linearly with the tensile strength and the hardness of commercial alloys and some alloys developed by Mitsui. This electronic method was very convenient in designing high performance zinc alloys efficiently.

The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

0. C. Ralston—The fact that none of the organizations that have worked on these ammoniacal leaching processes have contributed discussion of Mr. Caron's papers today is a matter of some disappointment. Adaptations, modifications and improvements have been made by several organizations or individuals and to complete the record I want to document a number of them. The Nicaro Nickel Co. operated a Government owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, during the past war. A report on the project was written for Reconstruction Finance Corp. and is in the document file collected by the Office of Technical Services, Commerce Department and filed with the Library of Congress, where it can be consulted or bibliofilm or photostat copies obtained by asking for copies of PB 97271. Nicaro Nickel Co. has obtained a series of U.S. Patents, my list (probably incomplete) of which bears the following numbers: 2,400,098; 2,400,114; 2,400,115; 2,400,461; 2,400,612; 2,458,902 and 2,473,795. International Nickel Co. has also studied the problem and U.S. Patent 2,478,942 shows that some of the complications involving occasional low extractions have been unraveled. Forward, Samis, and Kudryk, of the University of British Columbia, have also published a study of copper-nickel sulphide concentrate.' Others are interested and it is evident that this type of hydrometallurgy is likely to find a happy application in the not-too-far distant future. Caron's two papers practically amount to a summation of his life's work on the important subject of nickeliferous iron ores and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is fortunate to have been chosen the medium of publication. M. Rey—The ammonia leaching process has been the subject of certain studies in New Caledonia, but at the present time, the conditions are not very favorable to its adoption. The process is a combination of a thermal and a hydrometallurgical process. As a result, the first costs and the operative costs are rather high. To counteract this unfavorable situation, it would be necessary to make a very high extraction. But unfortunately, the process is delicate and in spite of all of Caron's valuable work, there are still many unknown factors. It is difficult to obtain regularly a high extraction, exceeding 75 to 80 pct. It would be interesting to have the opinion of Inter-national Nickel on the process and to know what the Dutch are doing in Celebes. M. H. Caron (author's reply)—I am quite familiar with the different types of nickel and cobalt ores as found on New Caledonia, and it may be pointed out that the Celebes ores are quite the same in their properties. Their behavior when treating the ores by the ammonia-leaching process is also alike and in my opinion, there is no reason why a high extraction of the New Caledonian ores could not be obtained if the process is properly applied. For the sake of completeness I may add that one of my patents has not been discussed in the papers. This patent deals particularly with the treatment of serpentine nickel ores. Rock suitable for crushed-stone aggregate is almost entirely restricted to the Highlands region of Arkansas, mostly from Paleozoic sedimentary units, but also from a few Cretaceous igneous plutons. Reserves in the state are sufficient for local needs, and Arkansas is geographically well situated for export markets to the south, where resources for crushed-stone aggregate are lacking. A study of 423 quarries, test pits, and exploration sites in Arkansas has been completed to evaluate the relative quality of bedrock units for producing crushed aggregate. Of these, 274 sites have records of engineering tests for stone evaluation done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and/or the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Of the 1,775 sample records from these sites, the most commonly reported parameters are the LA abrasion test and the Na-sulfate soundness test. Many records also have absorption and specific-gravity data, and, for some, petrographic information helps identify the potential for alkali-silica reactivity in portland-cement concrete. By determining the bedrock sources of the tested samples, comparison is made between the various geologic mapping units as to their relative quality for crushed stone.

Predictions of coal cleaning plant performance from the washability data are traditionally used at the conceptual design stage of a coal preparation plant to confirm process selection. The development of computer programs which simulate the operation of a plant facilitates the optimization of product yield and quality, and ultimately proceeds. It is shown that the optimum is sensitive to changes in mine operations and market price structure. A computerized review of operations is thus recommended as an on-going activity .

GASIFICATION is important to the anthracite industry, as it is to the entire solid-fuel industry and to the nation. However, to the anthracite industry it may have particular significance in that it would increase the market value of many millions of tons of a by-product fuel, which the industry now has in storage and is currently producing, in addition to increasing the potential market for all its products. The by-product fuel is of usable quality but the ash content is higher than it can be in other products and therefore it must be converted or used at the point of production. Gasification is one method by which the product may be given increased value. The inherent characteristics of anthracite make it well suited for producing a fuel or synthesis gas. It is the most concentrated form of natural commercial carbon, noncaking and noncoking; it does not produce smoke, tar, or soot and has a low sulphur content; and the volatile matter, which ranges between 2 and 8 pct, is 80 to 85 pct hydrogen with small amounts of methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen. The ash fuses at high temperatures, which allows it to be burned at high rates without slagging. However, with the addition of small amounts of dolomite, the ash will form a slag, or glass, which is very fluid. Anthracite has long been used in the manufacture of city gas and it is extensively used in various parts of the country to make water gas to be converted to hydrogen. Buckwheat and rice anthracite are used in Galusha producers to make producer gas. Excellent synthesis gas has been made in a Galusha producer with rice and barley anthracite with oxygen in tests at the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co., Trail, British Columbia. In these tests, anthracite was shown to have advantages over competitive fuels, in that the gas had a higher hydrogen content and could be cleaned with less difficulty. The anthracite seams are steeply pitching and in mining the parting strata and some of the roof and bottom materials are taken with the coal. In preparation, these materials are separated by gravity from the commercial product and stored in refuse banks. This refuse contains a mixture of rock, slate, or shale, and high-ash anthracite with bone coal, which is low-ash coal that is interspersed with thin bands of shale.
