"Modelling and simulations for mineral processing plants have been successful in replicating and predicting predefined scenarios of an operating plant. However, there is a need to explore and increase the potential of such simulations to make them attractive for users. One of the tools to increase the attractiveness of the simulations is through applying optimization schemes. Optimization schemes, applied on mineral processing simulations, can identify non-intuitive solutions for a given problem. The problem definition itself is subjective in nature and is dependent on the purpose of the operating plant. The scope of this paper is to demonstrate two optimization schemes: Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) using an Individual Discipline Feasible (IDF) approach. A two stage coarse comminution plant is used as a case plant to demonstrate the applicability of the two optimization schemes. The two schemes are compared based on the problem formulations, types of result and computation time. Results show that the two optimization schemes are suitable in generating solutions to a defined problem and both schemes can be used together to produce complementary results. INTRODUCTION The comminution process for a mineral processing plant consists of multiple crushing and classification stages and aims to produce fine material to liberate ore from the minerals. The modelling and simulation of such processes are well established using static process models (King, 2001; Napier-Munn et al., 1996). A recent development in the dynamic modelling for such processes has shown further increase in fidelity compared to the static process models (Asbjörnsson, 2015). The developed simulations can be utilized to design, operate and control mineral processing plants based on the requirements of users (Bhadani et al., 2017). Typically, the requirements in the operation of the comminution process are conflicting in nature, as for instance, reduction of power draw by process units, maximization of production of fine materials, and increasing utilization of the process units. These conflicting requirements leads to a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) problem to operate a mineral processing plant. The MOO problems are normally referred to as non-linear problems and its fundamental understanding with respect to process behaviour is difficult to achieve."

A VEIN may be defined as an aggregation of mineral matter, more or less tabular or lenticular in form, which was deposited from solution and is of later origin than the inclosing rock. This definition differs from the one found in many text-books in that no assumption is made as to the origin of the space occupied by the vein or the manner in which the mineral matter was deposited. In the present paper the writer purposes to discuss the mechanics of vein formation, and does not wish to begin by begging the question. The origin of ore deposits has been diligently investigated in recent years, but, while much has been written concerning the chemistry of the process, the physical side of the question has received less attention. The source of the ore minerals; the chemical composition of ore-hearing solutions; the relative importance of magmatic and meteoric waters as agents of concentration; and the causes of mineral precipitation have all been discussed at length. On the other hand, little has been written concerning the mechanics of vein formation, and the theories given in text-hooks today are essentially the same as those developed by the early Cornish and Saxon miners. Early investigators often regarded both veins and dikes as igneous in origin, but today the theory that vein minerals have been deposited from solutions, either liquid or gaseous, is firmly established. The latter view is supported by the fact that many vein-forming minerals are not found in unaltered igneous rocks; by evidence obtained in the laboratory regarding the solubility of minerals; by the presence of many ore minerals in hot-spring waters; by the occurrence of some veins in regions consisting exclusively of unaltered sedimentary rocks; by evidence as to the temperature at which some minerals are formed; and by the absence of mineral segregation due to difference in specific gravity. Since publication of the First Edition of "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking," in 1944, this book has been a major reference on the subject of steelmaking. The Second Edition of 1951 was so fundamental that it has retained its general usefulness to the present date. However, recently some of the material has been updated in connection with the writing of a companion book, "Electric Furnace Steelmaking." The sponsor of these two books, the Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking Committee, has felt that the new material should be made equally available to purchasers of either book. Accordingly the subject matter of Chapters 14, 15, and 16 of this new edition is duplicated by corresponding chapters in "Electric Furnace Steelmaking." It was also recognized that the use of oxygen in the open hearth and in the new basic oxygen processes represents a major development that should not be omitted from any basic reference. Thus the major new feature of this Third Edition is the supplement on "Oxygen in Steelmaking." The cooperation of the Iron and Steel Division's Acid Converter and Basic Oxygen Steel Committee (now merged to form the National Open Hearth and Basic Oxygen Steel Committee) is specifically recognized. In addition to the authors of chapters listed elsewhere, it should be noted that Arthur B. Wilder was the Committee Chairman. Although the changes in the Third Edition are important, the Committee cannot overlook the classic character of the Second Edition. This edition was edited by W. O. Philbrook and M. B. Bever in collaboration with H. B. Emerick and B. M. Larsen. It is anticipated that the Third Edition will maintain the value of the book until the current rapid changes in all basic steelmaking processes stabilize themselves sufficiently to justify a complete revision of the entire text in Part I. The experienced service of Wesley Burr in incorporating the new material in the index is also recognized.

INTRODUCTION The inactive uranium mill tailings investigated in this study are located in two mining districts, Elliot Lake and Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. The sites exhibit a mixture of surface features consisting of dry areas, with or without vegetation and areas covered with water. On the edges of the water bodies, indigenous vegetation has invaded the tailings beaches [ Typha] spp. (Tourn.) L. a dominant plant on these tailings beaches, has been studied for the uptake of radium-226 and lead-210 (Kalin and Sharma, 1981b) from the tailings. It was found that most of the radium-226 remains in the roots of the plants, and that the solubility of radium-226 in control soil differs from that in tailings. The uptake of radium226 by vegetation and other biota is related to the solubility of the element in water. Factors controlling the solubility of radium-226 in uranium mill tailings are of interest in assessing the environments effects of these wastes. Rusanova (1962) found that the soluble or extractable amount of radium from the soil is inversely related to the total concentration of calcium and magnesium in the soil. Experimental work has clarified some aspects of the leachability of radium from uranium mill tailings (Levins, et al., 1978; Wiles, 1978, and others). Halvik, et al., (1967) studied the effects of pH and chemical composition of surface water on the liberation of radium from uranium mill tailings and uranium ore. He found that an increase in pH, up to a value of pH 9, decreases the amount of radium released from the tailings and the ore. A positive effect of calcium chloride was noted on the leachability of radium. Benes (1981) reviewed the physicochemical forms of radium and its migration in water. Based on experimental work, he identifies primary factors which determine leaching of radium from uranium mill tailings. The ratio of the volume of the leaching solution to the weight of the leached sample; the composition of the leached solids and the leaching solution, and finally the pH of the leaching mixture are of importance. He emphasized that a scarcity of field data exists, which would relate experimental work to the actual situation in the tailings ponds. Inactive tailings ponds in Ontario are 16 to 23 years old, and processes which are of importance in evaluating the long term effects of uranium mill tailings in the environment can be studied. The objective of this work was to investigate the leachability of radium-226 from the tailings under field conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sample Collection A description of inactive tailings sites in Ontario, where the tailings and the water for this study were collected, can be found in a report by Kalin (1981). [Typha] spp. specimens were excavated from 16 different locations along with the tailings attached to the roots of the plants. A tailings sample from the surface area, around the plant, was secured before the excavation. Tailings samples were also collected from dry areas free of vegetation in the vicinity of the wetland stand. Surface samples (depth 0-5 cm) and samples at a depth of 20-25 cm were secured. Water was collected from the shallow tailings beaches around the vegetation stands. Sample Preparation The roots of the plants were washed free of tailings with distilled water. The resulting thick slurry of tailings was allowed to settle in the wash basin for five minutes and the supernatant water was decanted. The remaining saturated tailings were brought to 400 ml volume with distilled water in a beaker. The slurry was mixed with a magnetic stirrer for two 24-hour periods. After the first 24-hours, the slurry was allowed to settle for 20 minutes and the supernatant water was removed. The remaining sediments were suspended again in distilled water (400 ml total mixture) and leached for a second 24hour period. The tailings slurries from the different locations had a solid to liquid ratio, which ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 grams of dry tailings material per millilitre. The variations in the ratios are the result of differing fractions of coarse and fine tailings on the sites. In the final leachates, the solid to liquid ratios of the samples were 0.17 (±0.1) g/ml. The pH of the surface water and the leachate was determined with an I.L. Portomatic pH meter. All the tailings samples were homogenized in a mortar and brought to dryness at 75 to 85°C. Henry Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary*).—In this paper Mr. Simons derives the various forms of revolving slime tables, of which the Harz and the Linkenbach tables are typical examples, from the old rectangular or box buddle. This I believe to be an error, at any rate if Mr. Simons attaches the same meaning as I do to the ((evolution" of a dressing appliance. By the '(evolution" of such an appliance I understand the progressive development and improvement of an appliance acting on a definite principle, such improvements having usually for their object the economy of labor in working the same, or the increase of its capacity; when an entirely new principle is introduced, I no longer look upon this as evolution from the old type, but as the origination of an independent type of appliance. The box buddle was no doubt the predecessor of the old Cornish round buddle, which was evolved from it with the object of saving the labor required to work the box buddle; both machines are horizontal-current separators, in which the separation of sands of different densities is effected by their differential rates of fall in a horizontal current of water of considerable depth. These appliances, though well suited to sands, are for obvious reasons not adapted to the treatment of slimes. The revolving tables of the Harz and similar types, on the other hand, act on the principle which I have called separation in thin films of water, and which Mr. Simons calls the film sizing principle, in which the resistance of the surface over which the pulp flows plays an essential part in determining the separation of the particles, and which is well suited to the treatment of slimes. Unlike the last principle, it will not work in deep bodies of water and cannot be used where considerable depth of material accumulates in the appliance, as in the box buddle and round buddle. As I have shown in my book, The Dressing of Minerals, p. 326, these revolving tables are a development of the appliance known variously as the flat buddle, flat table, or frame, the last name, which is the old Cornish one, being the one that I personally prefer. These primitive appliances, as well as the continuous-acting round tables described by Mr. Simons (his Figs. 10 et seq.) all work on the principle of separation in thin films, and are all adapted for the treatment of slimes; his buddles and round tables (Figs. 1 to 9) do not work upon this principle, and should therefore be sharply differentiated from the former. The evolution in each case of the continuous acting, more or less automatic, circular appliance from the primitive, intermittent, hand-worked, rectangular appliance has proceeded upon strictly parallel lines. The question of the evolution of the respective types involves a point of some importance as regards the principles of ore dressing.

The Australian underground contract mining industry has grown from almost nothing 25 years ago to the point today where half the countryÆs underground mines are using contractors to produce their ore and do their development. This growth was driven by the need to change poor industrial relations and work practices in sectors of the industry, along with the needs of many small gold mine owners to preserve their capital by using contractors to do their mining. The industry is dominated by two major privately owned contractors with a number of other publicly and privately owned contractors making up the balance of the market. This paper discusses the important trends in the contract mining industry and the directions it may take in the next few years.

"The Gunnar uranium deposit was within metasedimentary rocks of the late Archaen Tazin Group. These rocks were intensely altered by albitization so that the immediate host to the ore consisted dominantly of albite, and by the subsequent introduction of calcite. The ore consisted of disseminated pitchblende and uranophane in a pipe-shaped breccia zone. Oxidation of the ore was more intense near surface than at depth, but there was no near-surface enrichment.IntroductionThe Gunnar Mine site is on the tip of Crackingstone Peninsula, on the north shore of Lake Athabasca, Province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The peninsula forms the southern part of the Beaverlodge mining area. The ore consisted of disseminated pitchblende and uranophane in brecciated metasedimentary rocks of the Tazin Group, and the deposit was characterized by extreme albitization and subsequent carbonatization of the host environment.Production from the mine began in 1954 and the ore was depleted by 1963. In that interval the deposit yielded about 5 million tonnes of ore containing about I. 75 kg/tonne U3O8. It was mined initially from an open-pit and subsequently from underground; the open-pit contributed about 55% of total tonnage. Uranium was recovered by atmospheric leaching in sulphuric acid, ion exchange concentration, and precipitation with magnesia.This paper is based on studies made during the productive life of the mine and is concerned primarily with pre-ore alteration of the rocks containing the deposit, and with the ore mineralogy."

AN improved method of measuring the surface area of a comminution product down to any desired particle size has been developed. The method is largely graphical, and requires relatively little calculation. It can be used with materials containing large amounts of clay, or excess fines of any kind. The surface area S is expressed in terms of square meters per100 c.c. of solids. This expression is based upon volume rather than weight, and is considered to be more suitable for crushing and grinding problems, where the machines ordinarily are operated under constant volume conditions. It has the advantage that surface areas of different materials can be compared directly, even though their specific gravities may be unknown. The "specific surface" of a material, or the number of square centimeters of surface area per gram, is equal to 100S divided by the specific gravity. Particle diameters are expressed in microns, K being the diameter of the largest particle present and L the grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding. The value of K does not always coincide exactly with the diameters of the largest particles retained on the coarsest testing sieve, since the largest particles formed in crushing and grinding are often slabby, or have other irregular shapes. L has been chosen as 0.700 microns, or number 27.5 in the size number series,1 for reasons to be explained later. S is the total surface area of all particles larger than L microns in diameter. When a homogeneous comminution product is separated into fractions whose diameters bear a constant geometrical relationship [p] to each other, and the log per cent weight retained upon each size and passing the next larger size is plotted against the log diameter, a straight line results, which is called the distribution line, and which has a slope in called the distribution modulus. The distribution line can be extended to any desired limiting size, and the total surface area of all particles larger than that size can be calculated. The equation of the distribution line is w = Cxm [I] where w is the per cent weight retained on each successive sieve; x is the particle diameter; and C is the per cent weight retained on an opening of unit diameter.2 Theoretically, the distribution line can be extended to include infinitely small particles. When it is so extended, and the assumption is made that no fine particles are present other than those accounted for by the equation; the log per cent cumulative weight passing any series of sizes, plotted against the log diameter passed, will result in a straight line lying parallel to and above the plotted distribution line.

Within the past few years a number of the larger mining enterprises have introduced similar systems and there is growing interest in the subject. This will be stimulated by the final report of the President's Second Industrial Conference, in which the following statement occurs:""The conference finds that joint organization of management and employees where undertaken with sincerity and good will has a record of success. The general principles governing such organizations are stated at length under the title 'Employee Representation. It is not a field for legislation, because the form which employee representation should take may vary in every plant. The conference, therefore, does not direct this recommendation to legislators but to managers and employees.""If the joint organization of management and employees in the plant or industry fails to reach a collective agreement, or if without such joint organization, disputes arise which are not settled by existing agencies, then the conference proposes a system of settlement close at hand and under Government encouragement, and a minimum of regulation. The entrance of the Government into these problems should be to stimulate further cooperation."""

This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.

Controlled drilling and blasting continue to be an important method of block production and for block splitting. Drill and blast technique has disadvantage that sometimes, it produces cracks in uncontrolled manner and also produces micro cracks in the block as well as in remaining rock, if not carefully carried out. Recovery by this method is low compared to other methods. Therefore, attempts have continued to develop controlled growth of crack in desired direction. In this paper a series of tests are described using detonating fuse in marble. Economics of different methods is also compared. In comparison to conventional use when holes are lined with inexpensive cardboard or plastic liners with a slit, the cost and damage is the least and development of crack is in desired direction.

Autogenous grinding in Turkey was first applied to quartzite where the mill is grate discharge type with an internal diameter of 2.99 m, having a length of 3.20 m and a capacity of as to 11.0 tons per hour. The second autogenous grinding was applied to a copper ore at Murgul Cakmakkaya Flotation plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works having three mills 26 feet in diameter and 10 feet in length in close circuit with hydrocyclones. Recently, alterations were made in grinding circust by adding pebble mills. Furthermore, rubber liners and lifter bars were introduced pebble extractor and classifier were new features in the primary mills and circulating load was reduced by 20-50 tons per hour. At the end of these charges, capacity of each mill line was increased to 48 tons per hour with a full capacity of more than 9000 tons per day. Thirdly, autogenous grinding has been executed successfully on the slags of Samsun Smelting Plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works with a mill of 20 feet in diameter and 6 feet on length having pebble mill following autogenous grinding.

GOLD was discovered in the Sierra Nevada by J. W. Marshall on Jan. 2, 1848. The town: of Grass Valley soon sprang up and contained several stores in 1849; but the population of the town has always reflected the fluctuations in quartz mining. Gold-bearing quartz was found on Gold Hill in September 1850, and in the next two years most of the quartz bearing veins in the vicinity were located. At first, the quartz was crushed in mortars with spring poles; the Huff Co. took out $20,000 in this manner during the winter and spring of 1851. The first mill was put up in January, 1851. In 1866, there .were in Grass Valley 248 stamps, crushing 71,420 tons of ore with an average yield of $30 to $35; in Nevada City, there were 142 stamps, crushing 14,200, tons, with an average value of $25. But in 1918, only two properties in. this region, the Empire and the North Star, were producing. Since then, there has. been a revival of mining in the district and the following properties are being opened up: The Golden Center, Grass Valley Gold. Mines CO , Idaho-Maryland Mines Co., while the Sultana is kept unwatered and work is going on in a half dozen small properties.

Underground mining operations on Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile were suspended in 1976, suffering the combined effects of low gold prices and grades. A subsequent substantial increase in the gold price led to the decision by Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to reopen their mines in 1979. The two shafts selected for access required excessive maintenance. The geological assessment and development parameters prescribed have been successfully used to establish reserves to maintain production at a 390 000 tonnes per annum rate. While ore reserve grade is being maintained from primary stoping sources, supplementary lower grade ore is drawn from remnant pillars and stopes at lower cost.Performance by the workforce has reached levels previously attained and a record tonnage was hoisted in the fourth year after recommencement.Keywords : Golden Mile lodes, geological research, payruns, cut and fill, mill holes, gold price, ore grade, amalgamation.

This case-study of the financing of the Ok Tedi project illustrates the nature of project financing and outlines the arrangements made in the case of this project; it also demonstrates that the limitation of financial exposure is an important goal for Governments involved in developing the resources sector. The account includes a chronological description of the process by which the sponsors prepared for the financing of the project and the lenders became involved in it. The type of security arid loan documentation required for such financing is described, together with a broad analysis of their content and the manner in which the various risks involved in development are apportioned among the sponsors and lenders. The ability to apportion and limit financial liability is an important development for the owners of capital and resources.

A study of the effect of nickel on the cupellation process has shown that a very low "nickel limit" must be imposed for cupellation (0·08 grams nickel or 0·05 grams when copper is present). In the presence of slightly greater amounts of nickel, lead tends to spreadon the cupel with detachment of drops from the main lead pool. In crucible fusions nickel contaminates the lead button to a small extent, and this contamination is increased.in the presence of either iron or copper. Nickel also causes "shotting" of the lead, this effect being more apparent in the presence of iron.Both the spreading during cupellation and the shotting during crucible fusion are considered to be caused by adsorption of insoluble NiO at the Pb-PbO interface, lowering the interfacial tension.Excess litharge crucible charges are' fused at 116boC. to eliminate shotting. A brief· soaking in molten basic litharge slag effectively reduces the nickel content of lead buttons. The solubility of silver in litharge slags is considerably decreased in the presence of nickel. Corrections can be applied for silver losses in slags but these corrections are not as accurate as with copper ores.INTRODUCTIONThis paper on the effects of nickel on fire assays for silver is the second of an intended series describing investigations into the fire assaying method.In the first paper, discussing the effect of copper on fire assaying processes (Guerin, 1957), it was shown that certain elements, because of their relatively low affinities for oxygen, will tend to contaminate the lead button during crucible fusion and scorification. Nickel, having a slightly greater affinity for oxygen than has lead, would be expected to be oxidized and slagged readily, and would not be expected to appear in the metal phase (lead button) to any appreciable extent. Production of crude oil in the U. S. S. R. during 1939 is estimated at, 226,111,000 bbl., as compared with 219,778,000 bbl. in 1938, an irlcreasc of 2.88 per cent but some 6.00 per cent under the planned output. During the past year a major readjustment took place in Russian oil fields, with the Grozny district falling into the third place, its former place having been taken by the fields of the Maikop-Kuban area of northwestern Caucasus. Production continued to grow in the Ural-Volg:t district and further large increases in this province in the coming years are certain. The drilling operations continued to be most unsatisfactory, falling far behind the plan, possibly as much as 25 per cent undvr the set objectives, and thereby interfering with the production plans, mora particularly since the Soviet oil industry is still based primarily upon the production from the naturally flowing wells without any proration whatsoever rather than upon stabilized production from either prorated oil wells or those operated with various mechanical lifts. The year 1939 started with the fulfillment of the drilling programs to the extent of about 90 per cent, but the situation rapidly deteriorated arid by the second half drilling programs were being fulfilled only to the extent of 60 per cent or less. Such breakdown in drilling operations was possibly due to poor equipment, which has not been able to stand increasing demands upon it, and this is substantiated by the rccent orders plaeed in the United States by the Soviet Government for some 60 drilling rigs of the latest design. Production Baku District.—-The fields of the Apshcbron Peninsula (Baku district) made a notable progrress during the past year and were able slightly to increase their production, to 166,000,000 bbt. as compared with 164,692,-000 bbl. during 1938. The c.rnphasis of production in the Baku district remained on the flowing wells, about 20 per cent of the total number of wells flowing about 70 per cent of production. During the past year a major readjustment took place in Russian oil fields, with the Grozny district falling into the third place, its former place having been taken by the fields of the Maikop-Kuban area of northwestern Caucasus. Production continued to grow in the Ural-Volg:t district and further large increases in this province in the coming years are certain. The drilling operations continued to be most unsatisfactory, falling far behind the plan, possibly as much as 25 per cent undvr the set objectives, and thereby interfering with the production plans, mora particularly since the Soviet oil industry is still based primarily upon the production from the naturally flowing wells without any proration whatsoever rather than upon stabilized production from either prorated oil wells or those operated with various mechanical lifts. The year 1939 started with the fulfillment of the drilling programs to the extent of about 90 per cent, but the situation rapidly deteriorated arid by the second half drilling programs were being fulfilled only to the extent of 60 per cent or less. Such breakdown in drilling operations was possibly due to poor equipment, which has not been able to stand increasing demands upon it, and this is substantiated by the rccent orders plaeed in the United States by the Soviet Government for some 60 drilling rigs of the latest design. Production Baku District.—-The fields of the Apshcbron Peninsula (Baku district) made a notable progrress during the past year and were able slightly to increase their production, to 166,000,000 bbt. as compared with 164,692,-000 bbl. during 1938. The c.rnphasis of production in the Baku district remained on the flowing wells, about 20 per cent of the total number of wells flowing about 70 per cent of production.
