This regiment, originally known as the First Engineer Reserve, will be remembered as the one recruited in New York City through the efforts of the Joint Military Committee of the National Engineering Societies. It was sent to England in August, 1917, and, after a few clays, forwarded to France and attached for immediate service to the British Expeditionary Force, without any opportunity for further field-training. This circumstance has led in some quarters to the impression that the regiment was one of engineers and mechanics merely, and had never been drilled under arms; whereas, in fact, it had received such instruction at Fort Totten for some time previous to its embarkation. It is true that in the famous affair of the German counter-attack after Byng's victory near Cambrai, the men of the Eleventh Engineers fought with pick-axes and tools, as well as with rifles borrowed from dead or wounded soldiers; but that was because they had left their own arms in camp, while doing the railroad-building work to which they had been detailed. The accomplishment of that work is really more remarkable than the behavior of the men under a German surprise-attack. It was before that counter-attack, and immediately after Byng's advance, that Field-Marshal Haig issued his despatch, announcing that the engineers deserved as much credit for that victory as the infantry, having performed miracles in keeping the railway transportation up to the fighting line. Indeed, the subsequent scrimmage, of which so much has been said, was ?Date possible only by the extraordinary position of the engineers at the very front, instead of in the rear, as might have been expected of them. A letter recently received from an officer of the regiment says: We have only recently been receiving the New York papers of early December, in which our regiment seems to have received much favorable mention. The stories were, in the main, true. Our men behaved themselves creditably, and certain of the officers received special mention for valor. Mining examinations are of several kinds and the scope of the investigation depends in each case upon the purpose for which the examination is made. A formal examination of a developed mine is an expensive undertaking; from one to several months are allowed for the work according to the size of the property; many samples are taken; investigation is made of the geological features, including, perhaps, a topographical and geological survey of the surface; the metallurgical treatment of the ore is studied; finally, a determination of costs is demanded. Formal examinations are made for prospective purchasers or as a basis for the consolidation of several properties, and occasionally, in the owner's behalf, to verify the work of resident engineers, or to determine the readiness of a mine for equipment and the kind and capacity of equipment it shall receive. A formal examination of a mine should not be undertaken until a preliminary examination has shown that it is justified. It is regrettable that some engineers are in the habit of prosecuting long and exhaustive examinations of properties whose lack of merit should be, and perhaps is, apparent from the start, or of continuing their investigation long after an unfavorable result is seen to be inevitable. "Characterization of the microstructure and revealing dendrites in the microstructure and also measuring the dendrites arm spacing and the distribution of silicon were studied in various pieces of compacted graphite cast irons with 0.17, 0.185, 0.2, 0.22 and 0.24 percent of mischmetal. Black-white and color metallography (quantitative and qualitative) were carried out on the various steps of the cast samples. Distribution of silicon was studied quantitatively using spot analysis with scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, effects of two variables (cooling rate and mischmetal percentage) on dendrites arm spacing were investigated.In order to color metallography, the samples were plunged into a boiling solution of 18% KOH, 9% NaOH and 9% picric acid in distilled water. It was inferred that the microstructure coloration varies according to the sequence: green-->red-->yellow-->blue-->dark brown->light brown as the silicon content decreases. After observing dendrites, dendrites arm spacing was measured. In this method, it seems to be possible to predict the mechanical properties of compacted graphite cast irons by knowing dendrites arm spacing and without any destructive testing. After studying the two variables, it was concluded that dendrites arm spacing decreases as the amount of mischmetal increases and it increases as the cooling rate increases.IntroductionIn general, detecting of primary austenite dendrites is not possible in cast irons due to their solidification system. Observing the dendrites in the room temperature is possible only in those gray cast irons that contain type D graphite. With collecting data of dendrites arm spacing (DAS) measurements, it could be possible to achieve the mechanical properties of cast irons without any destructive testing. In this research by applying a particular method, primary austenite dendrites and also distribution of silicon in the microstructure has been observed."

Knowledge of in situ stresses is fundamental to many studies in earth sciences, and coal mine ground control is no exception. During the past 20 years, it has become clear that horizontal stress is a critical factor affecting roof stability in underground coal mines. The theory of plate tectonics and the World Stress Map (WSM) project has been extremely helpful in explaining the sources and the orientations of the horizontal stresses observed underground. Recently, WSM geophysicists studying deep-seated stresses have developed a model of how stress magnitudes vary with depth in the crust. They have devoted relatively little attention to near-surface stresses, however. This paper explores the relationships between deep-seated and shallow in situ stresses in several of the world?s coalfields, using a data base of more than 350 stress measurements from underground coal mines. The analysis indicates that distinct regional trends exist, corresponding roughly to the regional stress fields identified by the WSM. The paper presents equations for estimating stress magnitudes that were developed by treating depth and elastic modulus as independent variables in regression analysis. The magnitude of the horizontal stress increases with depth, at rates that range from 0.8 to 2.0 times the vertical stress, just as the WSM ?critically stressed crust? model predicts. Overall, it seems that the stress regimes encountered in underground coal mines are closely linked to those that exist deep in the earth?s crust.

A detailed experimental study of breakage kinetics in a batch rod mill indicates that while the system is inherently nonlinear, the feed disappearance kinetics for the finer sizes and the coarser sizes at high holdups is well represented by first-order behavior. The set of breakage distribution functions was found to be normalizable and independent of particle holdup in the mill. The size discretized initial breakage rate functions were found to be inversely proportional to particle holdup and almost directly proportional to particle size. A linearized grinding model that results from the first-order Taylor's series expansion of the breakage rate expression was found to give good simulations of the mill product size distributions without recourse to any parameter improvement routines. Material transport through rod mills was evaluated by investigating the effect of operating variables on the holdup and residence time distribution of particulate solids flowing through the mill. Identical experiments performed in a continuous ball mill helped delineate the fundamental differences in particulate transport through these two types of mills. Mechanistic interpretations of the observed transport phenomena are presented, and their implications in the context of tumbling mill analysis and design pointed out.

Discussion: M. D. G. Salamon* (Fellow): The theoretical principles behind the techniques of calculation used by the authors was formulated and published during the period 1962- 65. These principles, together with their practical implications, were summarized in a review paper in 1966.1 Now, in February, 1970, we have this long and comprehensive paper discussing the practical application of the theory. I think this is good progress. The large number of practical examples treated in the paper clearly demonstrates not only the skill and knowledge of the authors, but also the versatility of the techniques of analysis. I feel that the techniques described by the authors, and their improved versions, will revolutionize mine planning. I suggest that no shaft system or stoping layout should be planned in future without an adequate rock mechanics analysis. It seems that it will be progressively more difficult to white wash mistakes in rock mechanics and attribute their costly outcome to normal mining risk. We should not, however, become complacent. There is still a lot to learn and do in the future. I do not want to discuss tonight the question of further research but instead, I will raise two other problems which may hinder the future progress of practical rock mechanics. To carry out work similar to that described in the paper, mine managements require men who are capable of doing the work and who have the most efficient techniques of analysis at their disposal. As a research engineer I have been associated with the development of techniques of analysis. I can assure you that these have undergone an amazingly rapid development during the last six years. We have seen the change from the use of the electrolytic tank analogue and manual integration to the method described by the authors, that is, to the employment of the automatic network analogue and computer integration. But this is not the end. In a recent paper Prof R. P. Plewman2 and his co-authors described a completely digital technique. Here the process of calculating on- and off-reef quantities is integrated into one computer run. But these sophisticated methods of computation are useless without men to make intelligent use of them. During the last few years a new breed of mining engineers has appeared on the scene - the Rock Mechanics Engineer. I feel it is timely to call the attention of the senior members of this Institute to the fact that this new breed will succeed in carrying out its duties in a valuable manner only if we manage to attract to its ranks young engineers of the right quality. The requirements are high. The top rock mechanics engineers have to be good mine planners and they have to understand the essence of sophisticated theories. Without these attributes they will not succeed in the long term and the industry will not gain the benefit of available knowledge. To attract this quality of engineers the industry will have to ensure that rock mechanics is accepted by all concerned as a career which could lead to the top echelons of our profession. Finally, I would like to make one or two remarks concerning Part I of the paper. In Sections 3.1 and 3.2 the authors describe methods of determining the normal stress on the reef plane and the convergence distribution in the excavations. The description as given applies only to a horizontal reef. When the reef is inclined the situation is more complex since a shear component of stress on the intact reef and a ride component in the excavations must then also be determined. These can be calculated by methods similar to that described in the paper.3 The practical application of the method of calculating the released energy (Section 3.4) is in the comparison of various stoping layouts to establish an order of preference in terms of decreasing rates of energy release. To carry out these comparisons effectively, the calculations must be carried out in a manner by which the values of energy per unit area obtained are comparable. I would like to note in this respect that the method of calculation given in the paper is valid without reservation only if there is no elastic contact between the hanging and foot walls in the mined-out area. If there is contact then the calculated energy values are correct only if the mined out area is increased in small steps during the analysis. My second point in this regard is concerned with the practical method of calculation as described in Sections 3.4 (ii)-(iii). Firstly, I would like to suggest that the energy calculation should be carried out, as far as possible, by using always the same scale on the analogue. Secondly, the reading of current on a pin should be followed by the removal of that pin to obtain the corresponding reading of potential. The product of these two values will be proportional to the energy released during the mining of the small area corresponding to that pin. The method suggested by the authors tends to mask possible danger points in the layouts, since they obtain an average value for a time period, say, for six months.

The years 1935 and 1936 have been momentous ones in the history of oil exploitation in Burma. While the possibilities of the discovery of an important new field in the country have become increasingly remote, there have been surprising and to some extent unexpected developments in and near the old established fields. Further, these developments have not only an important bearing on the future of the industry in Burma, but they point to conclusions of, world-wide significance in connection with the disposition of oil pools. BC'rma Independent of India According to the Government of India Act, passed by the British Parliament in 1935, Burma becomes independent of India, of which it was formerly a province. In future, therefore, statistics for Burma will be quoted separately from those of India. In 1934, 1935 and 1936 the oil production in India (including Burma) reached new high levels— though only a few per cent above the totals for 1919, 1920 or 1930. Part of the increase came from Assam, so that Burma's total is apparently below that of 1921. It must always be remembered, however, that Burma's largest potential producer—Singu—is used essentially by the Burmah Oil Co. as a reserve and its production is varied from year to year, and indeed from week to week, according to local market demand or the requirements of the Rangoon refinery. The figures of Table 1 must therefore be viewed in the light of these remarks.

PREVIOUS determinations1,2,3 of the texture of magnesium and its alloys have shown only slight variations in the principal features of the structure. This investigation presents pole figures for magnesium and two of its alloys, in which differences of some magnitude will be shown. Schmid and Wassermann have considered the texture of magnesium in analogy with that of zinc-also a hexagonal lattice. Whereas the zinc texture is said to be derived primarily through basal slip and secondarily through {102}† twinning, the {102} twinning is considered impossible at the later stages of the rolling in magnesium because of its smaller axial ratio. This state of affairs appears reasonable for pure magnesium, but for alloy textures the situation is more complex. A double orientation similar to that found in zinc has been reported by J. D. Hanawalt,4 and the addition of small amounts of calcium to magnesium and its alloys to produce a double texture was noted by J. C. McDonald.5 The pole figures of this investigation, using an improved X-ray technique, show these various textures. The dependence of directional properties of rolled sheet on modifications of texture is well recognized. Correlation of physical properties with existing texture should be even more significant if quantitative valuations are attached to the various areas on the pole figures. Such a quantitative technique is developed herein. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Two alloys were used, besides high-purity magnesium. In each case, the metal was extruded to bars 32 in. thick and hot-rolled to a thickness of about 0.075 in. It had been established previously that such a reduction was more than sufficient to eliminate the extruded structure. The rolling proceeded in the same direction as that of the extrusion, without any cross rolling. The temperatures corresponded to normal commercial practice, averaging around 600°F. A unique method of preparing the sample was developed in this work. Instead of using a flat specimen, a stem of the metal was cut out of the rolled sheet in the desired direction (rolling direction) as shown in Fig. 2. From a sheet of 0.075 to 0.065-in. gauge, the stem was cut to a square cross section with a jeweler's saw, rounded with a file and polishing paper to a diameter of 0.060 in, and evenly etched in dilute hydrochloric acid to a diameter of 0.038 ± 0.001 in. In this way, a cylinder of the original sheet with its axis in the desired direction was produced. By using this type of specimen for the pin-point pictures, any variance in the absorption of the diffracted beam at the various angular settings of the specimen, was completely eliminated.*

The history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers in the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribes in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections. It is universal in South Africa to speak of the Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a a boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

There was considerable prospecting for new supplies of oil in Arkansas during the past year, regardless of the overproduction affecting the industry throughout the country. Justification for this new work was not lacking, as the local markets more than threatened to absorb a declining production. There were, however, no important new discoveries in the state during 1929. The McDonald area in sec. 2515, S.-18 W., threatened to expand into a major producing area. Oil showings had been encountered here in wells drilled by the McDonald Oil Corpn. as early as the fall of 1928. In July, 1929, an initial production of 1000 bbl. of 32" oil was obtained in McDonald Bros. B-3 Wilson, from a sand at 2780 to 2786 ft., which is about 80 ft. higher than the sand previously tested in the neighboring wells. This production declined rapidly. At the end of the year there were six producers making about 200 bbl. per day total. Seven dry holes have temporarily stopped development in that area. The showing of B-3 was sufficient to cause considerable leasing activity. The area lies several miles west of the Louann portion of the Smackover field. The discovery well went to 2873 ft. and found Glen Rose lime in bottom. The age of the producing sand is in doubt; it seems closely related to the Tokio sand. During 1929, several paying wells were brought in, as a northeastern extension to the Smackover Heavy area, in sec. 34 and 35-15-15, from the Nacatoch sand. Over 20 new wells were drilled and resulted in at least 1500 bbl. production. The down-dip or off-structure territory contiguous to the Smackover uplift was further tested at various locations with the usual results; that is, a showing of "salt water gas," which soon blew off and in some cases a slight showing of oil. These gas showings, found further down the dip than oil, are the results of the ability of water to take gas into solution at the rate of about 3 per cent. by volume at atmospheric pressure and proportionally larger quantities, if available, at higher pressures (measured on the absolute scale). This paper examines the use of the FrothSim flotation simulator to improve the performance of an industrial column flotation cell. The performance of an industrial retreat column cell is simulated, and, from the discrepancies between the simulated and experimental results, a problem with the wash water distribution is postulated. The scientific reason for the reduced performance with uneven wash water addition is described in detail. Further simulations indicated the potential for improvement with an even wash water distribution, resulting in both improved performance and reduced wash water usage. The simulated uneven wash water distribution was confirmed industrially, and the headers were redesigned and installed. A sampling campaign to compare the performance before and after the modifications showed that the flotation performance was improved dramatically, with a statistically significant decrease in gangue recovery, without a commensurate reduction in valuable mineral recovery.

MAGNESITE is found in 22 California counties, but many of the deposits are too small or too impure to be of commercial value. Several of sub-stantial size and quality were entirely exhausted by wartime operation. At present, three properties comprise the only known workable deposits in the state. Of these, the Western mine and the Patterson mine have been known and worked for many years, and have been described in con-siderable detail in various publications, therefore need only brief mention here, because of their proximity to the Bald Eagle mine. The latter, recently developed, is unusual in type of ore deposit, plant design and operation, as well as products made, and very little has been written concerning it. WESTERN MINE The Western mine, 32 miles south of Livermore, Calif., was formerly operated by C. S. Maltby. It has been a consistent producer for many years.1 The ore is of amorphous variety, occurring along fracture zones in serpentine. The veins vary greatly in width, the average being perhaps 8 ft., with the maximum indicated in one early stope of 40 ft.; 2 ft. is considered the minimum for economical mining. The strike of the veins is predominantly north and south, with dip to the west varying from 40° to 75°. Walls are well defined and as a rule firm and easily supported, Veins range in length from a few hundred feet to 1000 or more. Their maximum vertical extent is about 350 ft., but many run less. Early mining consisted of open-cut and glory-hole work on the larger outcrops. This was followed underground by a modified shrinkage system, the waste and low-grade horses being removed by hand sorting on the tramming levels and transported to surface dumps. In all these, quantities of charcoal and various kinds of it must be handled continually and it therefore seems to me necessary to tell something about charcoal for aiding you in these processes. Without it artificers could scarcely bring their works to an end, because it is the food that nourishes the fire both for smelting and for softening the metals, or for calcining or drying things out. Excavation engineering involves complex processes for primary and secondary extraction of materials. The shovel excavators bear varying mechanical energy input and stress loading across the working bench during excavation. These varying mechanical energy input and stress loading effects cause significant wear and tear and fatigue failure in equipment components. These effects further result in unplanned downtimes, reduced efficiency and high production costs. In addition, the mechanical and electrical control systems must be operated in efficient profiles to generate maximum outputs and efficiency from these excavators. Efficient technologies are therefore required to solve these problems in order to reduce production costs and increase efficiency. In this paper, the authors develop a rigorous simulator for a hydraulic shovel in a surface mining environment. The finite element model is used to capture the stress profile within the shovel components during excavation, such as, the bucket, stick and boom assemblies. The profiles are classified into normal, critical and extreme ranges, with appropriate corrective measures to avoid extreme loading conditions. The loading capability of shovel excavators can be examined by assessing its structural strength against all possible maximum loads working on the equipment. The dynamic model is used to define efficient profiles of the critical structural components of hydraulic shovels during digging operation. This assessment is used to locate the maximum possible loads and the critical sections of the structures. The method presented in this paper forms the basis for developing comprehensive simulator models for efficient shovel operations in constrained mining environments.

THE Phosphate Recovery Corporation operates three flotation plants, Nos. 1 and 2 concentrators about three miles northeast of Mulberry, Florida, and No. 3 plant at Wales, Tennessee. These plants represent the first commercial phosphate flotation operation and are also believed to be the largest nonmetallic flotation operation in the world at the pres-ent time. The details of this paper will be confined to plant No. 2, this being the newest and largest concentrator in Florida, and the flow sheet being practically the same as at plant No. 1. The No. 3 plant has been oper-ated but a short time and has been shut down since December, 1932, on account of the decrease in phosphate rock production. The phosphate washers usually are located centrally on a known deposit so that about two hundred acres of ground can be mined eco-nomically to each washer location. The washers are moved to new areas when the distance becomes too great for economical pumping. The flotation plants are built either adjacent to a washer, so that current debris may be utilized, or on the site of a former washer where there is sufficient accumulated debris available for mining, and the flotation plants must also be moved from time to time. Most of the water used in the Florida flotation plants is recovered after passing through a circulating system where most of the fine sus-pended matter is settled out, but some make-up water is obtained from deep wells near the plant. Power is obtained from the Tampa Electric Co. through the dis-tribution facilities of the International Agricultural Corporation. Flotation concentrate is hauled from the plant by trolley over the International Agricultural Corporation's trolley system, to the drying plant at Prairie, one mile northwest of Mulberry.

From 27th to 29th September, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a Colloquium on Equipment Alternatives in Underground Mining in Johannesburg. The Colloquium, which was highly successful, was held concurrently with the 1988 Electra Mining Exhibition. Particle characterization The Fourth European Symposium on Particle Characterization is to be held in Nirnberg, West Germany, from 19th to 21st April, 1989.
