The limiting concentrations of carbon and oxygen which may CO-exist at equilibrium in liquid iron are important in determining the degree to which liquid steel may be refined before it is deoxidized. Most refining processes depend upon the oxidation of a highly carburized iron which invariably results in contaminating the steel with oxygen. The oxygen thus introduced presents many problems to the refiner, who in turn has attempted to rid the steel of this impurity by deoxidation witch elements such as manganese, silicon and aluminum. The importance of the limiting concentrations of carbon and oxygen is accentuated in view of a number of recent researches which have indicated in many instances the existence of relations between oxide inclusions and dissolved oxygen and physical properties and chemical behavior of steel. The determination of the equilibrium concentrations of carbon and oxygen existing in iron under steelmaking conditions is obviously of fundamental importance. It has been generally assumed that the product of the equilibrium concentrations of carbon and oxygen in liquid iron is a constant and that this product is directly proportional to the carbon monoxide pressure in equilibrium with the liquid iron. Hertyl.2 has computed values for this product based on open-hearth data which are all in the neighborhood of 0.01 to 0.03 (per cent. FeO X per cent. C) for temperatures in the vicinity of 1550" to 1600" C. and one atmosphere pressure. Kinzel and Egan % have attempted to determine the value of this product by exposing liquid iron to carbon monoxide at one atmosphere pressure. The value reported by them was 0.0005 at 1550" C. Flotation rate constant is an essential parameter in the flotation process. The fine coal sample utilized in this investigation is anthracite from the Shenhuo mine in eastern China. Fine coal flotation rate tests were conducted to compare the flotation rate constant at constant power input with that at gradually increasing power input. Results indicate that the flotation rate constant decreases with the flotation process and increases as the flotation energy is increased. In addition, the flotation rate constant is close to the maximum value. The increasing trend of the flotation rate constant gradually slows down as the flotation energy input increases.

My thanks are due to Mr. Frank Firmstone, Easton, Pa., who has called my attention to the statement in my paper' that " Barite, fluorite and quartz, thougll not observed in the Tennessee area," ... as possibly misleading to the reader, if construed to mean that such a discovery had never been made. Mr. Firmstone is correct in assuming that this statement referred only to the study of the worked areas of the metallic ores, especially zinc, made in the course of the survey upon which my paper was based. The occurrence of barite and fluorite with lead-ores in Tennessee was reported by Prof. Safford? in 1869, and by Safford and Killebrew? in 1887, with the further statement that about 1,000,000 lb. of barite were annually mined in Greene, Washington and Jefferson counties, Tenn., and that considerable deposits occur also in McMinn, Smith and other counties. It is also noted that the barite " usually occurs in veins, associated with galena." The present worked areas of barite are, however, distinct barite propositions, without workable quantities of either lead or zinc, so far as mining operations have gone, and the areas are more or less removed from the present areas of zinc-ores. Mr. Firmstone informs me also that, in 1892, he observed, in the magnesian limestone at Watauga Point, in Carter county, on the left bank of the Watauga river, a little below the mouth of Buffalo creek, small quantities of galena and some fluorite.

A computer-aided method for optimization of bench blast design in surface mines is presented. The design procedures basically consist of two steps. Firstly, a series of normalized, full- scale bench crater tests must be carried out in the field to find the optimum burden that produces the largest amount of acceptable fragments and other parameters that defines the effective fracture zone. Next, the locations and initiation sequence of blast-holes will be determined in such a way that each hole, at its time of firing, will be responsible for same amount of burden rock and will be in a position favorable to effective fracture of burden rock. A computer software "B.B." which can assist the second step of the design is fully introduced and its application is illustrated by an example.

Maintenance of equipment in Longwall faces plays a vital role in face performance. This is more prominent when shortage of spare parts and trained personnel occurs. A study was made in an operating Indian Longwall face for identifying the types and meantime between failures. Though the duration was not enough and study was not very elaborate, it revealed certain interesting facts. The machine availability was found to be poor, though a maintenance schedule was followed. Failure of simple parts like AFC chain connectors even resulted in loss of production of 10 times the complete chain cost. This pinpoints that a proper maintenance schedule is to be developed considering the human factors and local conditions existing in the particular country. Operations research techniques could be used in the process.

Petroleum production in the Mexican fields during 1932, estimated at 32,400,000 bbl., was only 564,000 bbl., or about 2 per cent less than the 1931 total. Production in the northern fields declined approximately 1,100,000 bbl., the Tehuantepec output showed a drop of 340,000 bbl. and the South fields gained 865,000 barrels. Wildcatting continued at a reduced rate, the only successful completion being Presa No. 2 well which at a depth of 1535 ft. produced about 7,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. This well is an offset to Alberca No. 1 completed during 1931. General conditions in the petroleum industry coupled with the additional burden of the 21c per bbl. duty on oil imported into the United States further discouraged development activity in Mexico during 1932. Production of the Mexican fields in 1932 was distributed as follows: Production (U. S. One of the chief difficulties with which the operator of a coal washing plant has been forced to contend is the handling of the very fine coal. First he has the problem of separating the fine coal from washery water. This is usually accomplished by the use of settling cones or Dorr thickeners: in either event the separated fine coal contains a high amount (40 to 80 pct) of water and, somewhat loosely, dependent upon the size of the coal particles present, may be known as sludge or slurry. His second problem is the satisfactory further dewatering of such separated sludge and/or slurry. At the coal washing plant of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., washed coal from the Deister Plat-O tables is sluiced to a stationary inclined de-watering screen provided with 3/16 by 1-in. slots, and the coarse coal passing over this screen is conveyed by a Baum-type elevator and a flight-type distributing conveyor to a battery of Carpenter centrifugal driers. The fine coal and water passing through the openings of the primary dewatering screens, plus the fine coal passing through the screens of the centrifugal driers (and no small portion of which is the result of the disintegrating action of these driers) is pumped to two 30-ft Link Belt settling cones. The sludge recovered as underflow from these cones was formerly dewatered on stationary screens having 1/16 by 1-in. slots and discharged on top of the coarse washed coal in the Baum drainage conveyor; but after a relatively few hours of op eration the circulating load of fine coal on this conveyor built up to a point where it became necessary to reduce the quantity of feed to the washing tables. The original arrangement of our coal washing and dewatering equipment is shown in Fig 1. In order to regain the loss in active throughput which had been caused by this circulating load, an installation of six vibrating filters was made during the year of 1936. This resulted in an increase in normal tonnage of washed coal from 1430 to 1750 tons per 8-hr shift, a gain of slightly over 22 pct. This increase in throughput has made a very substantial decrease in the " conversion cost" per ton of washed coal. Since the vibrators were installed, we have gained about 2,000,000 tons in production, compared to what would have been produced in the same number of shifts at the former rate. Putting it in slightly different form, we have saved in the past 12 yr the cost of 1400 operating shifts in the washery. Fig 2 shows the location of the vibrating filters as applied to the original flowsheet. It will be noted that the sludge from the bottom of the settling cones is passed through a distributing box and thence to the filters. The de-watered coal from the filters is de-livered to the conveyor receiving the dried coal from the Carpenter driers.

These effects were investigated in batch flotation studies, and by the measurement of rest and pulp potentials. At Iow additions of sulphurous acid as the pH regulator, flotation rate increased with increasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The recovery of chalcopyrite dropped significantly below a pH value of about 6,5 at 25 p.p.m. of dissolved oxygen, and below a pH value of about 6 at a dissolved-oxygen concentration of 8,2 p.p.m. The rest and pulp potentia Is measured indicated that dixanthogen is the dominant species formed on chalcopyrite surfaces during flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate. The results suggested that the same species might have formed on galena surfaces in the pulp after the ore had been milled in a ceramic mill under nitrogen. Increased additions of sulphurous, sulphuric, and hydrochloric acids increased the rest potentia Is, while the addition of sodium sulphite decreased these potentials.

IT may seem necessary to offer an apology for presenting for consideration a process which is conspicuous by its absence in the literature of the Institute, and which may be thought by some to belong to the past in metallurgy, and to have been already superseded. But the large capital invested in puddling calls for a careful consideration of the question whether the time has certainly arrived when the puddling furnace must be replaced by the converter and open-hearth furnace. May there not still be a place for puddled iron alongside of molten iron and steel, and is not the improvement of the puddling process itself worthy the attention of engineers equally with the Bessemer and open-hearth processes? The changes involved in the conversion of pig iron into wrought iron are well understood and need only be briefly alluded to. The patent of Henry Cort bears the date of 1784. Since that time the improvements in the process have mainly consisted in the replacement of sand by iron bottoms by Samuel Baldwyn Rogers in 1818, and the still more recent substitution of iron oxide for the refractory materials used for the rides and bridge of the hearth, which distinguishes the wet or boiling process from the dry or paddling process. Chemically, the process consists in the removal of the metalloids from the pig iron, a result effected mainly by the iron oxide. Silicon is first oxidized, then the phosphorus, and finally the carbon. The silicic and phosphoric acids produced pass into the cinder and the carbonic oxide burns as it escapes from the bath of metal. It is interesting in this connection to note the effect of temperature on the removal of the phosphorus from the iron. As is well known, no phosphorus is eliminated under the oxidizing influences prevailing in the Bessemer converter, while from 70 to 80 per cent. is removed in puddling. The 61,470-acre Lick Creek Roadless Study Area is in the western Salmon River Mountains, centered 12 miles northeast from McCall, ID. U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined the roadless area in 1984. There is no recorded mineral production from the study area and no current mineral-related activity was observed. The roadless area is underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Pegmatite dikes and aplite dikes are present locally. Sampling indicates these rocks are not mineralized. No mineral resources were identified. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of federal lands recommended for wilderness, as required by The Wilderness Act of 1964. The USBM examines and evaluates individual mines, claims, prospects, and mineralized zones; USGS conducts broader geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Such data helps Congress and other federal agencies make decisions affecting the use of public lands.

"Process technology and design trends for copper, zinc, and nickel electrowinning cellhouses include focusing on energy reduction, productivity, and acid mist abatement. Larger electrodes, longer cells, automation, and higher current densities are leading to more capital-effective designs. The latest cellhouse designs include installation of automated electrode-handling systems, thereby removing more operators from the cellhouse. These technology and design trends result in lower electrowinning operating costs and improved purity of electro won cathode.INTRODUCTIONTechnology transfer between similar industries is an important process in improving product quality and productivity, and reducing operating costs. The electrowinning (EW) recovery of base metals, such as zinc, copper and nickel, is no different. The zinc industry with its larger EW product-handling requirements as compared to nickel and copper, has been driven to automation technology and the use of larger equipment. This technology has been transferred to copper. Nickel has led development and application in large-scale anode and divided-cell technologies but, due to nickel being produced in multiple forms (not just cathode) and being a small part of the whole complex nickel process route, the quantities of electrowon nickel are small compared to copper and zinc. Copper process technology in acid mist abatement was recently transferred to nickel. The focus in copper EW has been on energy reduction and productivity."

In pelletizing magnetic iron ore concentrates, about 6 to 18 lb of bentonite binder are added per ton of concentrate during balling to give green and dry strengths to the unfired pellets. The dry bentonite is mixed into the filtercake following the magnetic concentration circuit of the plant. The filtercake contains about 10% moisture, and the water may be of highly variable composition, depending on the particular concentration circuit, its source, and the ore being treated. A knowledge of the parameters that influence the balling operation is essential for optimal efficiency in producing balls strong enough to survive the treatment during transportation from the balling device to the furnace and during the firing operation. Furthermore, very weak unfired pellets probably contribute to high dust losses and poor furnace control. The factors that determine the strength of unfired pellets have received considerable study (1,2,3,4). Tigerschiold and Ilmoni(l) pointed out the significance of the surface area of the particles being pelletized. Merklin and Childs(2) reported on the effect of material size consist, chemical additives such as soda ash, lime, balling time, ball size, and the moisture content of green balls. Iwasaki and Zetterstrom(3) examined the detrimental effects of fatty acids on the pelletizing process. Stone(4) correlated the zeta potential of bentonites with the strength of unfired pellets. He found that, in general, a high negative charge on the bentonite is conducive to good balling. Although studies of pelletizing in the iron ore industry deal with a complex multicomponent system consisting mainly of the iron mineral, bentonite, and water, the last of these has received little attention, particularly with regard to the possible effects of mill water chemistry on the pelletizing process and the strength of unfired pellets. It is widely known that the composition of mill process water is an important variable in unit operations such as flotation, thickening, and filtering and that impure water can lead to poor metallurgical results. The results of the present study indicate that the chemistry of the mill water may be an important variable in the balling operation as well. Knowledge about this variable should contribute to lowering bentonite and oil consumption and to improving furnace performance. Such knowledge can also assist those who use balling in evaluating commercial bentonites for plant use as well as those investigating balling from a more fundamental point of view In this study we have examined 1) the effects of replacing mill process water in the magnetic concentrate filtercake with pure water, and 2) the effects of several chemical impurities that are commonly found in mill process waters upon the strength of unfired pellets. The results are interpreted in terms of the zeta potential of the bentonite and magnetite particles. The data lend support to a suggested mechanism whereby the electrostatic attraction of oppositely charged particle surfaces causes bentonite-bentonite and magnetite-bentonite bonding. This mechanism would also explain why several chemical additives e.g., sodium carbonates and phosphates, have such marked effects on increasing the strength of unfired pellets.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. "The deep-buried rock surrounding the Jinping II Hydro-power Station was taken as the engineering background. Using model specimens of classified rock materials to simulate fractured rock mass under high in-situ stress conditions, the test about acoustic propagation law on single fracture model of specimen under different pressures and different angles were carried out. The variation of p-wave velocity in fractured rock mass and axial stress-strain relationship in the whole test procedure was also studied. Based on damage mechanics principle and the acoustic wave propagation in cracked rock mass, comparative study on damage constitutive relation of fractured rock mass under high in-situ stress in consideration of equivalent strain and equivalent energy was performed. As the results showed, with the change of axial stress level under constant confining pressure, the change in wave velocity can be divided into three stages: slow increase (small variation in amplitude), rapid reduce (large variation in amplitude ) and accelerate reduction. When the confining pressure is constant, the maximum p-wave velocity and the peak strength of specimens increases with the decrease of the crack angle.When the crack angle is constant, the maximum p-wave velocity and the peak strength of specimens increases with the increase of confining pressure.It is identified that the theoretical calculation results of constitutive relation about elasto-plastic damage model containing variable wave velocity in the fractured rock mass is consistent with the model test results.Therefore,the constitutive relation can provide reasonable suggestions for engineering practice. INTRODUCTIONThere are a lot of joints and fractures in surrounding rock mass of deep-lying in the Jinping-II hydropower station, which has a great influence on the physical and mechanical properties of rocks and effects the acoustic wave propagation and attenuation law in rock. Many previous research and project examples has proved that sound propagation parameters are closely related to crack and stress condition. Thus, it has certain theoretical significance and practical application value to carry out researches on sound propagation characteristics and establish damage constitutive model of fractured rock mass which is related to sound propagation parameters."

ABSTRACT From approximately 1986 until 2000, uranium production was at a historic low. In 2003, uranium mineral exploration surged, despite the global financial crisis; however, the shortage and aging of qualified and experienced operators and regulators might soon become a constraint to this upsurge. This is true for all types of engineers, geologists, other scientists, tradespeople, and technicians. The situation raises questions about how the global mining industry in general and the uranium sector in particular will cope with future staffing needs. In this paper, the author examines the current situation and describes how some organizations are seeking possible solutions.

Documented case histories are studied where data were found on the initial collapse of the overburden above the longwall panels. Under this scenario, the most controlled conditions exist for assessing the span capacity of the overburden (i.e., before failure the roof spans to fin coal abutments on two to all four sides). In an attempt to correlate theory to field observations, data are used on the overburden lithology, and the depth, width, and face advance of the panel, as well as, the subsidence conditions noted on the surface. The subsidence measured on the surface is used to determine when complete failure in the over- burden rock has occurred.

A mineral resource survey of rock types and geologic structures indicates that the Mt. Henry RARE II area has low potential for the discovery of metallic minerals. Potential for coal and geothermal resources is negligible. Essentially, the Mt. Henry RARE II area has had no claim-staking activity, nor has any mine been developed in it. SETTING Size and Location The 23,000-acre (9,308 ha) "1t. Henry RARE II area (No. 1-666) lies within the Kootenai National Forest approximately 36 mi (58 km) north of Libby, Montana, in the Purcell Mountain; of Lincoln County. Irregularly shaped, the area measures roughly 5-1/2 mi (8.9 km) north-south by 8 mi (12.9 km) Past-west, and lies about 1-1/2 mi (7.2 km) south of the Canadian border.

Only South Africa can be considered in terms of resources of amphibole asbestos. There are two asbestos producing fields, one in the Northern Cape Province (producing only crocidolite), and one in the Eastern Transvaal (producing only amosite). This chapter discusses the banded ironstone sequence in which amphibole asbestos occurs, and the genesis of the fiber is briefly reviewed. Also, the properties and characteristics of amphibole asbestos are discussed and compared to those of chrysotile. Approximately 300 000 t of arnosite and crocidolite are produced annually. Crocidolite has a potential for a fivefold increase of production chat could be sustained beyond the year 2000. An estimate of the resources of the various producing fields in South Africa is made. The mining methods are also reviewed and evaluation techniques are discussed. The only two types of amphibole asbestos exploited at present in South Africa are amosite [the white colored amphibole asbestos) and crocidolite (the blue colored asbestos). As is well known, crocidolite has been mined in South Africa from the early part of this century, and amosite since the early 1930's. Since these dates, asbestos mining has developed into a significant mining industry. The annual production of crocidolite is approximately 170 000 to 200 000 t. and amosite production is in the region of 80 000 to 100 000 t. CLASSIFICATION OF AMPHIBOLE ASBESTOS Four types of amphibole asbestos are produced economically in the world today: (1) crocidolite, the fibrous equivalent of riebeckite, (2) arnosite, the fibrous equivalent of grunerite, (3) trernolite, and (4) anthophylite. The names trernolite and grunerite apply equally to the crystal and fibrous forms of these minerals. For comparison and clarification purposes, the six known varieties of asbestiform minerals known in the world are shown in Table 1. All the asbestos minerals were originally developed as cross fiber seams in veins or fractures, or were controlled by the lithology. Post- fiber effects caused slip, sheared, and folded fiber seams. Crocidolite and amosite occur in banded ironstone of early Proterozoic age of the Transvaal Supergroup. The fiber seams are developed in certain defined lithological units in the banded ironstone sequence. The lithological units have a remarkable lateral persistence with respect to their chemical nature and physical appearance. Vertically, the banded ironstone sequence displays a heterogeneous nature. Commercial Applications The features and properties that make amphibole asbestos commercially attractive are: 1) The long average length of the fibers is good for greater wet strength in composites. 2) The high tensile strength of crocidolite makes it superior to all other types of asbestos. 3) It is characterized by dispersion in most liquid media, particularly amosite in water. 4) Since the surface charge of amosite and crocidolite is negative, the fibers produce an open lattice work in water with a high bulk volume giving excellent filtration rates and rapid drainage in a wet asbestos cement mix. 5) The insulating properties of amphibole asbestos mats are still important, particularly in a corrosive environment, despite the introduction of many other synthetic insulating materials. 6) Corrosion resistance, particularly acid corrosion resistance. 7) Due to the high modulus of amphibole fibers, resins reinforced with these fibers exhibit

The physics and chemistry of the flotation process are not well understood. Many papers dealing with the theory of flotation have been published but most have been narrow in their viewpoint. No theory advanced has done more than explain, more or less satisfactorily, various isolated phenomena. Scientists have done little with the problem, doubtless because they have not seen sufficient of the practical side of the subject to have their interest aroused. Any attempt to explain the mechanism of flotation that considers only contact angles, surface tension, adsorption, the floating of needles, flocculation, or any other single and narrow phase of the question is sure to be disappointing. Flotation is a problem of colloid chemistry and must be studied as such. In a broad general way, flotation is a process involving and operating by virtue of surface reactions. The term "surface reactions" may be open to criticisms. Many chemists give the term "reactions" a definite and restricted meaning and to such the term may connote change in atomic grouping in strict stoichiometric ratios. While Langmuir looks upon adsorption as a reaction, and there is much evidence in support of this view, we may look on adsorption as a physcial process as far as this paper is concerned. The term seems well suited to the work in general. Presumably these reactions are reactions between the same kinds of forces (electrical) and differ only in degree and in the surface manifestations produced. The high cost of energy has made many solution mining corporations turn from fuel consuming evaporators to solar energy and solar ponds. The generally held concept of a solar pond is an area enclosed by dikes into which brine is pumped, water evaporated by the sun, and the resulting salts scraped from the bottom of the pond. This paper will show that solar ponding is not simple. It is a science involving six main areas. These areas are (1) land conditions, (2) meteorology, (3) fresh water, (4) accessibility, (5) manpower and (6) mineral resources. Each area is discussed to identify important parameters that must be investigated before the viability of a solar pond complex can be established as a mineral recovery step.
