INTRODUCTION. THE Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granulite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a new kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite" The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the aegirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is- easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex,. to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisses, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists.. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these' metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. MANY studies have been made of the properties of steel produced by adding varying amounts of sponge iron to the charges used in steelmaking furnaces.1-3 The results of these previous studies, however, have failed to disclose a reason for the belief of steelmakers that steel made in this way is definitely different from steel made entirely from scrap or iron melting stock. This paper deals chiefly with the structure of the sponge iron, of the wrought iron made by welding the sponge iron into blooms, and of the steel made by melting the forged and rolled blooms. It is believed that the structure of the final steel is inherited from the ore and that this inherited structure produces marked differences in the properties of the steel and explains the feeling of steelmakers which is based on their experience. Three kinds of sponge iron were used in this investigation: One made from a limonite ore reduced with natural gas, one made from a hematite ore reduced with natural gas, and one made from a magnetite ore reduced with charcoal. The formation of annealing textures in high-purity silver, from the various rolling textures obtanled in the course of texture transition, was studied. It was found that from a brass-type rolling texture the recrystallization texture is mainly (120) [211] type, which is quite different from the recrystallization texture of brass. From a predominantly copper-type rolling texture, the reclystallization texture is mainly (100) [001]. The recrystallization texture of silver- varies also with the degree of purity. In each case, however, the reorientation can be expressed as [Ill] rotations of 30° to 40°, which is consistent with the oriented growth theory of the formation of annealing textures. ThE recrystallization textures of rolled silver were studied long ago by Glocker and co-workers (1924-27) and were reported to be (113) [iil] upon annealing at low temperatures.1 Since that time, no further study of the recrystallization textures of silver, particularly with the modern techniques of quantitative texture determinations, has been reported in the literature. In a previous study2y3 it was found that the rolling texture of high-purity silver (99.999 +pct pure) is changed gradually from the common silver- or brass-type to the copper-type by raising the temperature of rolling from 0" to 200°C. The formation of annealing textures from the various rolling textures in the same material is, therefore, of considerable interest. The present paper constitutes the results of such a study. IN an earlier paper, Ehrenburg and Watson1 published the develop-ment for a potential function by which it is possible to obtain the electric potential at points on the surface of the ground when a current I passes between two electrodes and the subsoil is composed of parallel, homo-geneous layers. In view of the continued interest in the resistivity method of electrical prospecting, the author has considered it desirable to publish the results of a number of theoretical studies making use of this potential function, and also the results of a considerable number of tests with models designed to show the soundness of the mathematical theory. It is hoped that these results will prove how erroneous the various empirical rules for depth determination may be. It has always seemed puzzling to the author that one can find, in papers published comparatively recently, statements upholding empirical rules for depth determination, and attributing most of the irregularities of resistivity curves to vertical discontinuities in resistivity in the subsoil. It would indeed be fortunate for the geophysical investigator if such a simple rule held. However, numerous investigators have proved both theoretically and by the success of their field work that such a rule does not hold, even by a" rough approximation" in many cases. On the other hand, as is shown in the development to follow; if the underground conditions are favorable it is possible for such empirical rules to give a satisfactory depth determination. Authors should be more careful about making such sweeping state-ments about the accuracy of these empirical rules because the relative simplicity of the field work places the method in the hands of any inter-ested experimenter, and he is likely to become completely disgusted with the method after he has made several obviously wrong interpretations by empirical rules.

As mechanical shock and vibration environments evolve, it is important to understand their potential effect on human operators. Human beings are sophisticated mechanisms comprised not only of passive components with mass, damping, and stiffness characteristics, but also of components that can actively affect apparent mass, stiffness, and damping. Because the lumbar spine can exhibit local, short-column buckling, stability of the human trunk depends on the responsiveness of the neuromuscular control system.1-2 We have been evaluating the ability of patients with back pain to respond to a series of sudden loads. We believe the results have implications for isolation design and standards development. Methods 153 patients, aged 21 to 55, presenting with back pain agreed to enroll in a research study that randomly assigned them to one of three treatment arms: high velocity low amplitude spinal manipulation, low velocity variable amplitude spinal manipulation, or wait for 2 weeks and then be randomized to one of the above groups. Response to sudden load testing was one of a battery of baseline evaluations performed upon entry into the study and prior to treatment. EMG electrodes were attached to the skin over the paraspinal muscles of the standing participant bilaterally 3 cm from midline at the L3 level. While standing upright on a force plate (Bertec), participants were fitted with a strap around their back and hooked to a load cell in front of their chest. An accelerometer was rigidly attached to the load cell. Impact was applied to the chest using a cord attached to a falling weight. The weight’s fall distance was varied between 9 and 13 inches to account for the size of the subject. The subject was blindfolded and wore headphones playing white noise to prevent cueing of when the weight was dropped to apply the load. Hence, although the participant knew a load was about to be applied, he or she did not know the instant it would occur. Just before the weight was dropped, a 4 second data collection process was started for the two EMG electrodes, load cell, accelerometer, and force plate. The load drop was repeated 6 times, at irregular intervals, over a period of 2 minutes. The raw data thus collected was reduced to obtain several values: 1) length of time from the pull on the harness to the beginning of the response of the left and right paraspinal muscles (LES, RES), 2) time and magnitude of the maximum response, 3) force and acceleration experienced at the chest, and 4) the time and magnitude of the center of pressure location (COP). A general linear model was used to evaluate the results. Results For the EMG data, of the 1,824 observations made, 90% of them indicated a response. Prior to the sudden load, resting muscle activity was different between left and right sides (p=0.0001) and between males and females (p=0.0001). Female subjects began to respond to the sudden load within 92 to 110 ms and males from 101 to 109 ms. Females exhibited more variation in starting

System simulation is an increasingly popular technique for analyzing and improving existing as well as newly designed underground mining operations. An engineering firm that specializes in simulation helped a major metals producer build a long-range planning model of an existing underground mine. Subsequently the team adapted this model to assess technology alternatives in the design of a new mine. The two models differ in the level of detail used for modeling the development process. This paper discusses the differences in approach between the models along with the experiences gained and challenges faced during the construction and use of the models.

This report presents experimental data on crater formation in four rock types. From an analysis of these data a general theory of rock breakage by explosives is deduced. This theory accounts for most of the rock breakage and other phenomena that occur when a concentrated charge is detonated in a drill hole near a free surface. From instrumented crater tests and high-speed motion pictures of the explosions, various experimental checks on the deduced theory of rock breakage are made. The general mechanism of rock breakage by explosives as described in this report is outlined briefly below. The detonation of the explosive charge creates a high gas pressure in the charge hole, which in turn generates a compressive strain pulse in the surrounding rock. This compressive strain pulse travels outward in all directions from the charge hole. Near the charge hole the amplitude of this strain pulse is sufficient to cause crushing of the rock. However, as the strain pulse travels outward its amplitude decays rapidly until no further crushing of the rock is possible. The compressive strain pulse continues to travel outward until it is reflected by a free surface. Upon reflection the compressive strain pulse becomes a tensile strain pulse. As the strength of rock in tension is much less than in compression, the reflected tensile strain pulse is able to break the rock in tension, progressing from the free surface back toward the shot point. In other words, the rock is pulled apart, not pushed apart.

In small-scale blasting experiments conducted in the Bureau of Mines laboratory, small charges were used to produce craters in blocks of concrete mortar. The results are compared with larger scale experiments of other research workers, and the comparison demonstrates the similarity of the results obtained and indicates that small-scale blasting should be a useful tool for predicting large-scale blasting effects. INTRODUCTION The purpose at this investigation was to conduct blasting experiments in mortar in the laboratory and then, by comparing the results with those from larger scale field blasts in rock to determine to what extent, if any, the laboratory results resemble those in the field. The work described herein was the initial phase of a project aimed at evaluating small-scale blasting as a tool for use in improving blasting techniques. It is evident from the stand-point of control and cost that small-scale blasting would be valuable in the study of rock fragmentation by blasting in mines and quarries, if the extrapolation is valid.

THE unprecedented high price of zinc ore prevailing through the early months of 1915 caused great activity in the Joplin district of Missouri. The Media mill is conspicuous as one of the first of the new "big mills" of the district. The mill was built over a mine previously worked but abandoned in 1912 because of the leanness of the ore and the large quantity of water encountered. The ore prices prevailing-$100 a ton in June, 1915, as against $50 in 1912-favored the new undertaking. The mill was designed for good recovery so that it might operate in times of depression. In design and equipment, the mill is exclusively local in conception and construction. Former Exploitation The tract of land is a part of the large Guinn holdings; 70 acres are comprised in this particular lot, which is situated just a mile north of the center of Webb City on the Alba line of the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway. The ore lies 242 ft. below the' surface at the top of the knoll which is surrounded by the well-known properties: Black Cat, Ground Floor, Florence, Hurry-Up, Electrical and Mercantile. Since the abandonment, in 1913, of the Yellow Dog. a bit farther to the north, the Black Cat, Ground Floor and Florence workings had been flooded. However, as there was no cut through from this side into the area it was proposed to exploit, it was thought that moderate pumping facilities would take care of the water.

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. This extended abstract presents the progress of tropical phytomining, and reports on agronomic trials undertaken to determine whether the trends in temperate regions could be confirmed in a wet tropical environment.CITATION:Nkrumah, P N, Erskine, P D, Echevarria, G and van der Ent, A, 2016. Michigan reports another record year. Its production of 18,605,000 bbl. exceeds any previous year's total and is 2,000,000 bbl. over 1937, the previous record year. Production in 1938 brings the accumulated total for the state to a little over 100,000,000 bbl. It has taken 14 years to reach this accumulative figure, which would meet the needs of our country for about one month. Twelve new oil and gas fields were opened in 1938 and 978 tests for oil and gas were completed, of which 566 were oil wells, 25 gas wells and 387 dry holes. The new oil discovered is probably about equal to the oil produced during the year. Activities in 1938 The Temple field, Clare County, was the discovery of the year. Since July, 46 wells have been completed, and although not yet outlined it appears that more than 2000 acres have been proved for production from the Monroe of Devonian age, at a depth of 3900 ft. This discovery is the result of a wildcat test along a trend northwestward from the older fields of the central basin. The Edenville pool, Midland County, ranks second among the new fields. Thirty-five producing wells have been drilled to the Dundee at 3800 feet. The surprise development was in southwestern Alichigan, Allegan and Van Buren Counties, where six new Traverse lime pools were opened with a daily production of about 8000 bbl. at the end of the year. This is the first consistent Traverse production in the state and is about 100 miles southwest of the producing areas of the central basin. These fields have had a rapid development because of the shallow depths, which range from 900 to 1500 ft. Bloomingdale, Van Buren County, had a town-lot boom, and 72 wells have been drilled there since August 1938. Small operators from many states have been attracted to this shallow territory, and the coming year will see much drilling in these and surrounding counties. The Buckeye field, Gladwin County, led the state in amount of oil produced. Its total of over 7,000,000 bbl. was far ahead of that of any other pool.

The study of rock mechanics is becoming more important each year and several groups are currently engaged in the study of rock mechanics instrumentation and techniques that can be used to determine rock properties in place. As it becomes necessary to mine lower grade ores, larger equipment and tonnages are required, which in turn call for larger openings underground. In addition, rock mechanics studies are necessary for designing large underground openings for defense and powerhouses, and highway and water tunnels. Meramec Mining Co. has a rock mechanics program in which they are trying to develop a means of detecting ground instability prior to failure. In one case advance warning resulted in valuable lead time for back filling stopes before pillar failure had progressed to a dangerous extent.1

The purpose of this paper is to describe the case history of a blasting project conducted jointly by Precision Blasting Services and Cherokee Explosives. It is the intent of the authors to show how blasting could be done in controlled fashion near very expensive computer controlled machinery. The job was done in minimal time with no complaints or allegations of damage in spite of the fact that blasting was conducted within five feet of the equipment and with the 32 acre plant fully operational, with machine operators working within 10 feet of the blasting site.

As usually occurs in technological development, heap leaching knowledge has been built upon two parallel lanes, theory developed on fundamentals but relatively far from industrial applications, and operational know-how generated from empirical trial and error. As a contribution to close the gap between the above-mentioned lanes, the De Re Metallica process consulting group has been developing and applying fundamentalsbased modeling tools for industrial process design and process optimization of existing plants over the last ten years. As result, a library of models is now available with application to the whole production chain from blasting to electro winning. The Dirtlow Rake vein deposit, which is up to 12 m thick, contains a range of paragenetically linked replacement mineralisation styles typical of many Mississippi Valley-type deposit environments. The main ore zone lies within the solution collapse breccia domes, the more southerly of which has recently been well exposed, allowing its relationship to the associated mineral-hosting structures to be studied. The domes were largely formed during early silicification, propagated by dissolution collapse and infilled by subsequent fluorite-barite mineralisation. The location of pipes and pervasive replacement was also controlled by early silicification. Structurally controlled bow tie shears were formed as a result of fluid access at fracture-bedding plane intersections. The nature and distribution of the mineralisation styles indicate that the degree of fluid access, residence time of solutions in contact with the wallrock and susceptibility of the limestone to silicification each played a major role in dictating mineralisation

The alphaDOSIMETER is a complete, integrated system designed to monitor the immediate worksite of underground miners where the disintegration for radon daughters is a risk to the health of mining personnel. The dosimeter weighing little more than one pound is worn by each miner throughout the entire shift and is powered by the miner's cap lamp battery. After this integration period, the unit is connected to a reading network whereupon the day's data is dumped, calculated and stored. Beginning in July 1980, prototype units were subjected to vigorous underground testing in uranium mines in Canada and the United States and in tin mines in Cornwall, U.K. The testing results are summarized and proposals advanced for a typical mine monitoring system utilizing the alphaDOSIMETER.

Production of mine backfill from the tailings produced in a proposed Crandon concentrator is described. A process has been developed capable of producing suitable fill for the mining method selected for the Crandon orebody. It maximizes the placement of pyrite underground as fill and segregates tailings into pyrite and nonsulfide fractions. To determine the suitability and engineering characteristics of the backfill product for use underground, laboratory and physical stope simulation model testing was conducted. The results of the testing and the application of those results to the design of the backfill system ultimately affecting mine geometry and subsequent mine production will be presented.
