En ese sentido, las necesidades del país fueron los factores que determinaron el programa del Politécnico - en tanto la colonización exigía tanto el avenamiento de los pantanos, la bonificación del suelo, la instalación de agua corriente y la construcción de carreteras, como también que se construyesen edificios y se tendiese en acueductos.

The Bureau of Mines developed and evaluated a detecting and sorting device to separate the copper-bearing portion from the barren portion of Michigan native copper ore in the minus 4- plus 1-inch size range. Small-scale sorting tests were also conducted on minus 1- plus 1/2-inch material from the Centennial No. 6 mine, using a previously developed system that was modified to increase sensitivity. Results showed that, with the added sensitivity, 85 to 90 pct of the copper in the minus 1- plus 1/2-inch material could be recovered in about 50 to 60 pct of the fraction. Sorting tests on minus 4- plus 2-inch and minus 2- plus 1-inch fractions from the Centennial mine were conducted with the large sorting system. Results showed that 86 to 93 pct of the copper was recovered in 43 to 64 wt-pct of the sorted fractions. Combining of concentrates from the two fractions resulted in a recovery of 90 pct of the Popper in 55 pct of the weight. The composite concentrate contained 2.40 pct copper, and the tailing analyzed 0.33 pct Cu; the head sample assayed 1.46 pct Cu.

In all, 210 wellst were completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during 1939, which is 59 more than were drilled during the preceding year. Of this number, 137 were gas wells, which is a considerable increase from the 81 completed during 1938. Only 25 oil wells were completed, as against 28 in the previous year, and 28 dry holes, 6 more than last year. Shallow Development—Gas The increase in the number of gas wells is largely the result of a search for additional gas in Armstrong and Indiana Counties. Although a considerable number of wells were drilled in the latter county, the majority of them produced less than 100 M cu. ft. initial open flow. In Armstrong County, a new pool was opened in Cowanshannock township, producing from the third Bradford sand. Several large wells were obtained there, one of which produced an initial of nearly 12 million cu. ft., with a reservoir pressure of 1100 Ib. However, the productive area has been fairly well outlined by further drilling and shows that the pool covers only about 800 acres. The sand is 20 to 30 ft. thick, and probably has 5 to 6 ft. of pay. Thus this reserve is not an important one. Several wells were found in Menallen township, Fayette County, where the Big Injun sand has been having a play for the past three years, but the activity there is much less than a year ago. Oil On the west side of the Bradford sand gas pool, Cowanshannock township, Armstrong County, a well was drilled which flowed 100 bbl. the first day from the Tiona sand. A seismic fissuration index (K) is defined as the ratio of the difference in the P and S wave velocities obtained when a dry rock specimen is tested both under a load equal to half the uniaxial compressive strength of the rock (Vo) and without an applied load (Vd) to the velocity obtained without an applied load (Vd), as K = (Vo - Vd)/Vd. A similar seismic fissuration index is also proposed for classifying the dry rock mass in terms of field seismic velocities. The field equation is extended by including the intact rock seismic velocities. K is found to be related to the porosity of rocks. The proposed equation can equally be used for characterizing saturated rocks, using S-wave velocities. However, the time average equation should be used for characterizing saturated rocks, using P-wave velocities, even though this equation gives upperbound estimates of the rock material and fracture porosities.

In the summer of 1937 the authors began a series of time studies of the various processes employed in the production of crushed stone. These studies, made at quarries scattered over the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States, have not been completed, but to make results available to thee industry as early as possible it was decided to publish summaries of the studies made to January 1, 1939, as a series of progress reports. The first of these reports dealt with power-shovel loading and was issued as Report of Investigations 3461 in September 1939. The present circular discusses analyses of the time Studies of the haulage systems at the same quarries. OBJECT OF STUDY The pressure of business problems frequently requires the entire attention of quarry management and in consequence internal plant economies often are neglected, Also, operating officials absorbed in their local problems are prone to overlook possible economies that would attract attention immediately were they critically examining another plant. The authors felt that similar studies of many plants by impartial engineers -would disclose possibilities for cost reduction or greater efficiency in internal plant processes.

This paper reports on a test that was conducted underground in a mine for two years on the following: pipes coated with paint, fusion-bonded powder, metal, or impregnated tape; and aluminium, stainless-steel, 3CR12, and plastic pipes. It was found that the degree of corrosivity and mechanical damage increases substantially from the shaft of a mine towards the stope. Thus, the range of coatings that can be used successfully is fairly large in the shaft and haulageways, but corrosion-resistant materials, especially corrosion-resistant steels, need to be used close to the stope. A study of the relative costs involved showed the costs of pipes of low-carbon steel and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride to be lowest, and those of epoxy-coated steel pipes to be highest.

Explosives energy can be used effectively in breaking and displacing large volumes of rock in mining and quarrying industries in both open pit and underground. The blast result, however, may not be economical if the applied explosives energy distribution is not properly applied to match a given set of geometries. However, this engineering problem can be resolved by using a modeling approach in the blast design process. Starting with a given set of blast design parameters that include explosive, elastic properties of rock, geometry of the blast pattern as well as the delay firing time, this paper shows how a discrete element blast model can be set up to allow the examination of the effect of critical design input parameters on blast results. Examples are given in this paper to help visualize the value and application of blast simulations. They are (1) regular and terrace bench blasting models for throw control, (2) underground blasting including a drop raise opening and (3) collapsing of a multiple room-pillar structure with proper firing sequence to control the mixing of blasted materials.

INTRODUCTION THE term asbestos, as commonly used, includes half a dozen minerals all having a well-developed fibrous structure, but differing in chemical composition and in some of their physical, properties. In its strict application the name is limited to the fibrous varieties of the monoclinic amphiboles. Commercially, however, the most important of the asbestiform minerals is chrysotile, a fibrous variety of serpentine. About 95 per cent. of the asbestos used in manufacturing is chrysotile, and it commands a much higher price than any of the other fibrous minerals now on the market. Although the production of asbestos has increased rapidly in recent years, comparatively little has been published concerning its origin. THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the. upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, miuus what is taken up by the rivers land streams-is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area oE the district is 2,417,299 acres.The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea, and Waiwakaiho. Mount Egmont, which is 8260 ft. high, used to be called Taranaki, and from it the district takes its name (the Maori meaning of which is "sloping peak ").

Iron ores may be upgraded by flotation of iron oxides or siliceous gangue using either cationic or anionic collectors. The electrostatic mechanism of adsorption can account for the complex chemistry involved. In industrial practice, only cationic silica flotation is used at present in North America. Some of the seemingly paradoxical phenomena of cationic silica flotation behaviors in meeting the demand for low silica concentrates are reviewed.

For the past few years Caro's acid has been used for the treatment of cyanide containing slurry effluents, providing a feasible alter­ naive to other slurry treatment processes including !NCO SO2 / Arr and ferrous sulfate. Presently, mines using Caro's acid gen­erate their own Caro's acid onsite making a relatively low quali­ty product. It was at this point where we, at Degussa Corporation, decided to focus our efforts on engineering a Caro's acid genera­tor capable of cost effectively producing a high quality Caro's acid solution, thus reducing operating costs significantly. Caro's acid or peroxymonosulfuric acid is not a new chem­ical nor is it new to Degussa. The product was named after Heinrich Caro (1834-1910), a German chemist who first described its synthesis and its oxidizing properties in 1898. Degussa has been producing the potassium salt of Caro's acid as the triple salt, 2KHSO5 - 2KHSO4 - K2SO4, called Caroat®, for over 30 years. Caroat® is used for household and denture cleansers, as a bleaching agent in dish washing detergents, in printed circuit board etching and for cyanide destruction in the plating industry. From our experience in producing Caroat® Degussa developed its new Caro's acid based DegOX™ technology for the treat­ment of cyanide containing effluents from gold and silver mines.

Mine site restoration, involving the re-establishment of original ecosystems, is a far greater challenge than revegetation, which simply aims to stabilise the site and to give it a green appearance. One of the challenges is to establish a simple yet effective measure of restoration success. A potentially useful approach is to focus on particular groups of plants or animals which are likely to provide a general indication of the state of the ecosystem in which they occur. Ants have been used extensively by the mining industry in this context, particularly in northern Australia. Ants are likely to be useful bioindicators because of their general importance in the Australian environment, and because of the many linkages they have with other parts of the ecosystem. Moreover, ant community structure responds to stress and disturbance in predictable ways, and therefore provides an interpretable measure of ecosystem change. This is illustrated by a study of ant recolonisation at Ranger uranium mine. However, the extent to which ants reflect the responses of other ecosystem components is poorly documented. This is currently the subject of a collaborative project between OSS and CSIRO.

The reconnaissance of the Goldfield mining-district, describecl in this paper, was made in May and June, 1905, and, though this time was too short for a complete report, the work accomplished may serve as a basis for more thorough future research. Dr. Berkey has examined the rocks collected by me, and I am using his classifications. As a result of further field-work, and Dr. Berkey's examination of the rocks, this paper is an elaboration and correction of my views expressed in the Gold-$elm Sun, May 12, 1905. The sketch-map, Fig. 1, illustrates the geology of the Goldfield mining-district. Goldfield is an eruptive complex, consisting of alaskite (hinary granite), hornblende-andesite, hornblende-dacite, rhyolite, pyroxene-andesite, pyroxene-dacite (sometimes containing a small quantity of olivine), quartz-felsite, olivine-pyroxene-ande-site, and basalt. Considering this list to be arranged in the order of eruption, the age-sequence of the rocks conforms to Richthofen's law, formulated in 1868. From his observations in Europe and America, propylite, andesite, trachyte, rhyolite and basalt, occurring together, succeed one another. In a general way, the medium and the more acidic rocks precede the most basic—a result supposed by some to hare arisen from their position beneath the. surface, and due to a rude stratification by gravity in the original cooling magma during the older history of the earth, or to the same differentiation occurring during a quiescent (molten ?) period preceding eruption, being aided by the ease with which acidic rocks, mixed with water vapors, become fusible. Rock Discontinuities ("joints") affect blasting results. An investigation was carried out to understand if blast parameter such as spacing needs to be altered with the change in joint direction. Small scale laboratory studies in jointed limestone blocks have been carried out. It is shown that optimum spacing is variable with the "joint" orientations. Evidence is presented from field studies in four limestone quarries supporting laboratory studies. Reasons for success and failure of widespacing technique is also provided. Only with suitable orientations of "joints: widespacing is successful.

FOR many years basic control of refinery operations depended on visual observation of small chill specimens poured at various intervals during processing. The oseto of these samples was related to the physical and chemical properties of the metal. Since the =setn is dependent on many factors other than oxygen content, this method, while giving a general indication of the condition of the copper, does not accurately measure the oxygen content. For the last 3 years a modified vacuum fusion procedure which enables the operator to determine the oxygen content of the copper within 1 5 min of sampling has been in use at the Westinghouse Copper Mill. For use with this apparatus a sampling technique has been developed which gives oxygen values representative of the oxygen content of the wire bar. The sampling technique is based on a statistical study, which compared the oxygen content of the laboratory sample of copper poured at the same time a wire bar was being poured, with the oxygen content of the wire bar. The apparatus used for the determination of oxygen in copper is shown in Fig. 1 and is essentially the same as previously described but with one important modification. A very porous fritted glass disc has been inserted in the tubing between the manom- eter and 40/50 ground glass joint. The fritted disc retains the copper vapor and copper particles in the furnace section and prevents contamination of the mercury in the manometer. Without the disc the manometer became difficult to read after a few weeks of operation. In earlier work1 it had been established that the simplified vacuum fusion apparatus used at the Copper Mill gave essentially the same results as a con-vential vacuum fusion apparatus. However, for this study it was necessary to determine the difference, if any, between the oxygen content of the wire bar and the oxygen content of the small chill sample used for the oxygen analysis. This correlation was established by taking a chill sample at the same time wire bars were being poured. The wire bar being poured at the time the chill sample was taken was marked and removed for further analysis. The copper is sampled at various times during refining and cast into laboratory size samples with the mold shown in Fig. 2. The mold is made of cold rolled steel and is 2 in. high and 2 1/2 in. in diam. The large upper portion of the cast sample is used for measurement of the conductivity of the copper, The lower portion which is a rod about 1/4 in. diam by 3/4 in. long is used for determination of the oxygen content. Devido a sua alta demanda de produção e padrão de qualidade a indústria automotiva tem utilizado ao longo da história robôs nas mais diversas atividades como montagem, soldagem, pintura e inspeção. No intuito de levar esta realidade para a sala de aula de alunos de Engenharia Mecânica, foi desenvolvido um braço robótico didático, apresentando configuração semelhante à um modelo industrial, a ser utilizado como ferramenta de apoio ao ensino de robótica e outras disciplinas correlacionadas. Para isto, fez-se o uso associado da placa eletrônica Arduino e do software Matlab. Inicialmente foram obtidas as equações de cinemática direta e inversa. Os resultados mostraram que a posição teórica obtida apresentou um comportamento esperado conforme a metodologia adotada e o resultado experimental mostrou pequena variação de posição. Para a cinemática inversa, o tempo de resolução do conjunto de equações foi comparado à resolução do problema através de um método numérico. Com base nos resultados experimentais, foram feitas algumas sugestões de melhoria para o braço robótico didático e considerações relacionadas a acurácia de um robô industrial.
