Discussion by E.S. Cheney Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural -tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. Cast-in-place piling are a staple of the deep foundation industry, and are used (in various forms) worldwide. In assessing the application of cast-in-place piles, it is of value to reflect on the development of the various systems, in order to understand how the current processes and equipment came to be. This paper traces the evolution of the cast-in-place industry. Emphasis is on developments in the United States; however, since there has been a substantial fusion of US and European processes, notable European developments are also discussed.

Mejel valley zircon ore in Iran is located in north part of Iran and was sampled to evaluate its concentration. The aim of this project was to define the mineralogy of this zone and separating zircon from other minerals using gravity concentrators and magnetic separators. It is constituted of various valuable minerals, mainly zirconium, niobium-tantalum, titanium, rare earth elements particularly cerium-bearing minerals namely zircon, sphene and rare earth elements oxides. We used statistical method for designing of experiments. Yates method used for analysis of basic experiments results. The grade of zircon in primary sample was 1.1%. Different experiments were designed to optimize all required parameters. The final concentration with 75% zircon was produced and final recovery was 79%. Finally, lab-scale based flow sheet was prepared using experiments results.

Recent studies of creep have made it apparent that plastic deformation may occur in metals under stresses less than the elastic limit as determined from short-time tests. In summarizing conclusions drawn from creep tests by various investigators, Tapselll said: "It is evident that if a material has a true elastic range, the elastic limit must represent the maximum stress for no creep." The presence of a definite elastic limit, represented in single crystals by a critical or threshold shearing stress, is claimed by Schmid2, Elam3 and others who have investigated the plastic deformation of single crystals. However, this "law of critical shearing stress" was determined2 from short-time tests, and the measurement of the deformation was made with apparatus primarily designed to observe large amounts of plastic deformation, not to detect elastic changes. Experimental data recently obtained with highly sensitive instruments by A. W. Hanson4 on zinc and by Podaschewsky5 on rock salt indicate that the elastic range in single crystals is considerably narrower than formerly was supposed. Moreover, a theoretical possibility of permanent deformation, under the influence of even the smallest shear stress in single crystals above a certain temperature (Td), has been developed by G. I. Taylor6. This evidence seemed to warrant an examination of the elastic limit in large single crystals by means of creep tests. The first metal chosen for examination was zinc. The occurrence of enormous masses of pure copper has given the mining district of Lake Superior worldwide reputation. The first masses brought from there excited great attention, and directed the notice of the mining world to the few particular mines from which they were taken. It may not now be generally known that nearly all the veins which are worked, and which cut across the trap ridge, contain mass copper, and that large masses are continually being raised from them. The largest continuous mass which has been taken out was probably that from the Minnesota, in 1857, which is variously stated as weighing 420 tons and 470 tons. Its length was about 45 feet, its breadth or height 22 feet, and its greatest thickness 8 feet. All such masses are very irregular and ragged in their form and thickness, thinning out generally from a foot to a few inches, and straggling through the vein until they connect with other large masses. This was the character of a mass found in the Phœnix Mine, one of the oldest on the lake, which mass altogether weighed some 600 tons. But this was really a series of masses more or less connected by strings of metal, yet no one large part of it weighed, singly, over 200 tons. A similar series of masses, weighing about 600 tons, was extracted from the Miunesota. Some of the Phœnix masses were four to five feet thick of solid copper. The Cliff Mine has yielded masses weighing from 100 to 150 tons in one piece. One of 40 tons was taken out this year, besides numerous blocks weighing from 1 to 8 tons. This mine and the Central are now yielding mass copper in abundance. It is, bf course, impossible to pick, or drill, or to break out such huge masses of solid metal when they are found, by drifting upon the course of the vein. The method of extraction is as follows: The miner picks out or excavates a narrow passage or chamber upon one side of the mass, laying it bare as far as possible over its whole surface. It is usually firmly held by its close union with the veinstuff, or by its irregular projections above, below, and at the end. If it cannot then be dislodged by levers, the excavation of a chamber is commenced behind the mass, and this excavation is made large enough to receive from 5 to 20 or more kegs of powder. In one

INTRODUCTION ELECTROSTATIC methods of separation are used only when some peculiar advantage is gained. Such cases are minerals that are not separable by differences in specific gravity or magnetic response and that are desired in particles as large as 10-mesh, a size on which flotation separation is inefficient. This paper covers several separations of this type and others. It includes studies in the electrostatic behavior of kyanite, sillimanite, and zircon, simple silicates that cannot be called either acid or basic but are more nearly neutral. Kyanite and sillimanite are both desired in 10-mesh size and are difficult to beneficiate from low-grade ores to give that type of concentrate. A separation of garnet from diopside was studied because this mixture had been removed from a wollastonite product by drying and magnetic separation, and no special or extra-preparation for electrostatic separation was necessary. THE SEPARATOR The separator used in these tests is of the nonhomogeneous field type shown in Fig I[a]. It consists of a 11.4-cm-diam rotating metal roll 2 at ground potential over which the dry mixture of minerals is fed. The roll serves as one electrode of the separating field, and the other electrode is that of 3, a smaller 5-cm-diam rotating metal cylinder which is held at a high direct-current potential. In this paper the term "electrode" will be confined to the electrode at 3, roll 2 being designated only as "roll." [ ]

This machine is an improvement on the well-known endless travelling belt used for dressing slimes in many mills; the chief point of difference, and constituting the essential advantage of the present over the old form, is the application to the machine of a secondary agitating or shaking motion, in addition to the ordinary progressive motion of- the belt. In the machine as heretofore made, the inclined belt or apron moved slowly up against a thin stream of water and ore, depositing the concentrations carried over in a tank placed below, through which the belt travelled, of course, in a reversed position. By reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that in this main principle the new modification does not differ materially; but the means by which it is carried out are essentially different. "This paper presents the results of a study of the effect of flowsheet configurations on metallurgical results and describes a general method for developing and optimizing flowsheets used in the treatment of massive sulphide ores. The flowsheet configuration can have a significant effect on recovery and selectivity between valuable minerals and gangue minerals. Placing of intermediate products within the flowsheet, positioning of various pretreatment units, such as conditioners or regrinding mills, and the ability of the flowsheet to cope with wide swings in the feed grade and composition are the major parameters that determine the optimum flowsheet configuration. The complexity of the flowsheet is largely a function of the ore itself and of the number of final, marketable products that have to be recovered from the ore. The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The solubility of nickel in matte smelt- ing slags, both as oxide and in the metallic form, is predicted using the results of a recent experimental work carried out with lime- free iron silicate slags as well as slags containing lime. Predicted solubilities are much lower than the nickel content of smelting slags, indicating that entrapped and possibly dissolved matte could be the major cause of nickel losses in such slags.

Highly delaminated muscovite mica products (WG-1 and WG-2) have been developed by J.M. Huber Corp. The micas are characterized as a 325-mesh product having high brightness and very narrow particle size distribution. At 40% loading in polypropylene, WG-1 mica provides substantial improvement in tensile modulus and equal tensile strength to unfilled polymer; in high-density poly- ethylene (HDPE), WG-1 provides four times the tensile modulus and a 50% increase in tensile strength over unfilled polymer. Surface modification of the water-ground mica (SM ™) provides substantial improvement in tensile strength over untreated mica at greater than 20% loading in polypropylene; in HDPE, tensile strength is twice that of unfilled polymer.

This report presents information on 77 waterflood projects in 31 Montana oilfields. The study shows the locations of the projects, the sources and amounts of injection water, and the results in oil produced. Waterflooding, a secondary recovery technique, began in Montana about 40 years after the initial oil discovery in 1920. Often, the difference between water disposal by injection and pressure maintenance operations is not clear. Water injected at the projects in 1973 was 157.7 million barrels. In 1973, the 31 fields having waterflood projects produced 28.3 million barrels of oil valued at $88.4 million. Both in volume and value, this represents over 80 percent of the State's 1973 oil output. The projects are making possible the recovery of additional oil, thus contributing to the conservation of oil and lessening the impact of the current oil shortage.

T. H. Alden and R. L. Fleischer (General Electric Research Laboratory)— The authors' results indicate clearly and, we believe, significantly that during tensile deformation the surface layers of an aluminum crystal are hardened more severely than the interior of the crystal. A probable explanation of this effect, as the authors indicate, is that dislocations in the primary slip system may be obstructed at the surface or, it should be added, near the surface. The intent of this discussion is to show that the oxide film on aluminum is not likely to be responsible for this effect, but that the results can be understood if it is assumed the secondary slip is more active in the surface layers than in the interior. Prior study has shown that the principal mechanical effect of an oxide film on a single crystal is to raise the yield stress while leaving the rate of strain hardening during the initial deformation relatively unaffected.33 Since the yield stress is unchanged during polishing in the present case, we conclude that continual removal of the oxide film exerts a small effect on the plastic hardening.* It appears that the hardening interactions are occurring not only at the immediate surface, but to an appreciable depth below it, although with decreasing severity. For example, Kramer and Demer found that with removal of 0.004 in. from a specimen, the easy glide region was extended somewhat; but the yield stress did not decrease. The initial yield stress was recovered only after 0.041 in. was removed. Since a very brief polish would permit dislocations trapped behind a surface film to run out,34 extra dislocations must, instead, be trapped to a considerable depth below the surface. The same conclusion is drawn from the observation of decreasing hardening slope with increasing surface removal rates. If the hardening interactions were only at the immediate surface, a full softening effect would be observed at some small removal rate. The view is taken here that strain hardening is principally caused by small amounts of secondary slip.35 The secondary dislocations will interact in various ways with the primaries, interfering with their motion and causing them to accumulate in the crystal. Prior studies of easy glide have shown Diehl's model of hardening to be qualitatively consistent with the effects of impurities,36 of temperature,36 and of crystal size.37 On this basis the enhanced hardening of the surface layers in aluminum arises from increased secondary slip at and to some depth below the surface. Selective removal of this hardened layer is expected to decrease the measurable "bulk" hardening, the effect increasing with the removal rate and decreasing with the applied strain rate. We suggest that the stress on secondary systems is raised by the bending moments arising from interactions with the grips during the deformation. This stress from the grips has been shown to be a maximum37 near the surface, and hence, increased secondary slip should result. Prior investigations of grip effect:; indicate that as the grip stresses are raised by changing the crystal shape, the easy glide slope increases while the extent of easy glide decreases.38-40 It has been shown also that bending moments superimposed during tensile testing may either decrease easy glide, when supporting the moments caused by gripping, or increase it, when cancelling the gripping moments.38 This interpretation of the authors' results, emphasizing the special importance of secondary slip near the surface, is also consistent with the earlier results of Rosi.41 Copper crystals alloyed with silver in the surface layer show greatly increased easy glide compared with pure copper. In addition, the easy glide slope is reduced. The effect of bulk alloying in extending easy glide has been well established and has been interpreted as indicating the relative difficulty of secondary slip in alloy crystals. Since non-basal glide is difficult in zinc crystals, the effects of surface removal during deformation may be less important. Experiments to test this idea are in progress. I. R. Kramer and L. J. Demer (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Dr. Alden and Dr. Fleischer for their discussion. Our interpretation of the data in the paper is that dislocation motion is obstructed by "debris" which starts to form at the surface and extends towards the interior of the crystal with further plastic deformation. The fact that we did not find a reversion from Stage II to Stage I by surface removal shows that in Stage II the "debris" fills the entire cross-section of the specimen. Drs. This paper discusses the Installation of a Vibwall for the Cardiff Bay Barrage Project Wales, UK, by Kvaerner Cementation Foundations. Only the second use of the technique in the UK the wall was successfully placed to a depth in excess of 20 metres, in unique and challenging conditions. The installation of the Vibwall was a technical success, but not a financial one. The use of the technique was at its "limits" and this paper recommends some of the controls essential in the carrying out of such work in the future.

The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot-deep vertical borehole¬. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmos¬phere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respec¬tively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the correspond¬ing values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.

Kaolin deposits in Georgia lie in a belt that stretches across the central part of the state from Alabama to South Carolina. In 1977 the state's kaolin production was an estimated 4.58 million tons (5.05 million st) or 77% of US production. While mining methods vary, stripping contractor W. F. (Billy) Jackson of Wrightsville, Ga., depends on a fleet of 18 twin-engine elevating scrapers to move the hulk of overburden and clay. Owner Billy Jackson explains that the soil in this part of the state is perfect for scraper operation; overburden ranges from Georgia red clay to a sandy gumbo material. Apart from some shale, very little rock is encountered, thus eliminating any blasting re¬quirement. Most of the material can be removed with cutting edge teeth or with drop center blades.

Carbon-in-leach (CIL) is conventionally used in gold processing operations when preg robbing components are present in the ore. The CIL process is becoming attractive even in other situations when preg robbing is not a factor. This article discusses the situations in which the CIL circuit can be applied. The results of leach-carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and CIL circuits at Newmont Gold's Mill No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 are presented for comparison: Mill No. 4 was initially designed for a throughput of 4.1 kt/d (4500 stpd). It is presently operating at an average throughput of 6.6 kt/d (7300 stpd) without significant changes to the original design. The design considerations of the Mill No. 4 CIL circuit are discussed. The design of any processing facility represents a series of decisions. The final design options should ultimately be resolved based on economic as well as technical considerations. Every design decision represents some sort of compromise. From the designer's view point, these decisions are made with the conviction that the final product represents the most prudent long-term expenditure. The design throughput rate is a decision reflecting a maximum return for the capital and operating costs that the plant will incur over the life of the mineral resource. The result is a plant that is not operator proof or maintenance free because it would be too costly to build. Welcome to Chicago and to the first North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of such a Conference. We are here because of the rapidly mounting interest of technicians the world over in turning the potential use of underground space into sensible and economical benefits to people. This Conference certainly provides a major forum of international importance and scope for the exchange and dissemination of up-to-date knowledge on the technology of underground excavation and tunneling. The discussions will also surely delineate the immediate and longterm challenges we must approach in multidisciplinary force. We must exercise leadership in the problems we are trying to solve. Your program shows the breadth of the technical discussions which are going to be underway here during the three days of this Conference. I am not going into technical aspects or detailed discussions of the many uses to which underground space may be devoted. I also will leave to the technical meetings the outline of the state of the art. But I do want to tell you of the progress being made in channeling the expertise of many of the world's foremost authorities on rapid excavation and tunneling to consider the problems, laying the ground work for needed research, and provide the leadership in converting unused subsurface potentials to improve the quality of life.
