REVOLING slime-tables with stationary sprays and oscillating brushes have for many years been a favorite apparatus used for working slimes in German dressing-works, often displacing Rittinger tables and the many variations of Cornish buddles. The difficulty of building these tables larger than 5 1/2 meters (17 feet) in diameter, increasing the cost and making them unwieldy, rendered it necessary also to concentrate the slimes in several operations, because the travel over so short a length of hearth would not suffice for close concentration. A preliminary sizing is effected in a system of spitzkasten. Herr C. Linkenbach, general manager of the Ems Lead and Silver Works, Germany, devised a buddle, in 1878, which has since worked well and found much favor in Germany, and has been in one instance copied here, at Colorado Springs, without any credit having been given to the original inventor. Linkenbach's plan has been to reverse the functions of the table and the washing apparatus of the old German revolving table. He makes the tables stationary and rotates the washing apparatus,, thus enabling him to save in power, and, within certain limits, to increase the dimensions of the table, without in any way affecting its durability or materially increasing its cost. Little knowledge is available that considers the effects of continuous miner position on the possible respirable dust exposure of the remote mining-machine operator. Such information could be very useful for increasing the awareness of the remote operator as to those parts of an extended cut that generate higher levels of respirable dust. This data could be used to develop guidelines for positioning the remote operator to reduce his potential exposure. This work details the effects of continuous miner position on dust levels measured on the machine and at the remote continuous miner operator location.

The object of the following is to discuss a few of the problems encountered in the practical field application of reflection seismology. Very little has been published on this phase of the work and it is to be hoped that discussions will be presented by many seismologists who have met with these problems in the field. No attempt will be made to discuss the general principles of reflection prospecting, nor to outline the general field procedure. These phases have been presented more or less in detail in previous publications1 while economy of space and time prevents their being repeated or amended here. If, in the following pages, some criticism is offered of those who have already given their time and efforts to present valuable papers on reflection shooting, we trust that it will be accepted in the constructive light under which it is offered. We do not wish to give the impression that the following paragraphs represent ultimate achievement in field procedure; they are presented more to illustrate methods we have found satisfactory thus far. Most of the copper deposits in the Lachlan Geosyncline fall within areas having either a common host rock, mineral assemblage, form of ore body or time and method of emplace- ment. On this basis a Cobar-type ore has been recognised in the deposits of the Cobar -- Mt. Hope - Melrose region. The copper ores in the Tottenham-Girilambone area to the east have a different mineral assemblage. In the more rugged Central Highlands nearer the coast copper deposits are generally concentrated either in one of several Ordovician andesite belts, particularly between Wellington and Woodstock, or within Silurian acid volcanics developed in irregular fashion over a considerable portion of this region. In only a few instances is copper known in the granite batholiths which adjoin these volcanic belts. Native copper and magnetite are characteristic of the deposits of the andesite province and it is possible that future mineragraphic studies will indicate significant differences in the base metal sulphides of both the andesitic and the more acid volcanic belts. Ores having similar mineralogy and form to the Captain's Flat deposit are known at various localities in the eastern segment of the latter belt. In the Gundagai area several small copper deposits with associated nickel minerals have been developed in the Coolac Serpentinite belt.

Abstract - The Lupin mine, located in the central Slave province just east of the western boundary of Nunavut Territory, is a world-class example of a Neoarchean-aged banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted lode-gold deposit. At the minesite the gold-mineralized Lupin BIF, separating stratigraphically underlying psammitic wacke and overlying argillaceous turbidite sequences, delineates the Lupin dome, a hammerhead-shaped F2/F3 interference fold structure occurring at the greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphic transition within the thermal aureole of the Contwoyto batholith. Detailed paragenetic relationships indicate that peak thermal metamorphism coincided with the switch from regional D2 compression to rapid D3 unroofing of the Neoarchean orogenic infrastructure. Gold initially precipitated with pyrrhotite, replacing amphibolitic BIF at the apex of the Lupin deformation zone, separating the east and west lobes of the Contwoyto batholith. Over the course of associated prograde/retrograde metasomatic overprints, gold was further remobilized during garnet and loellingite/arsenopyrite growth in chlorite-altered selvages of late-forming ladder quartz veins. A metamorphic model of ore genesis, with gold being scavenged and transported by metamorphic fluid that was shed and structurally trapped at the amphibolite recrystallization front, is favored over the previously proposed syngenetic and exogenic models of gold concentration that have tended to polarize genetic interpretations to date.

Evans' theory for chisel shaped picks is well known in the field of rock cutting technology. It has been widely accepted as a good mathematical description of how coal and other rocks break under the action of a simple wedge or chisel. Subsequently, Evans proposed a corresponding theory for pointed shaped picks. Theory along with experimental evidence from the laboratory has consistently shown that chisel picks are more efficient than pointed picks. However despite such evidence, pointed picks continue to be the preferred shape in most practical cutting applications. Evans' theory for pointed picks was developed in an attempt to shed light on this apparent incongruity. The theory although predicting forces of the right order was found to be deficient in several respects. This paper examines Evans' theory for pointed picks and proposes changes to it, which brings the theory much more into line with measured data. The issue of the relative efficiencies of chisel and pointed shaped picks is also examined on a theoretical basis and the apparent incongruity is Resolved.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service, port construction, trans-shipment, and environmental control. The major problem is the shipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. This report reviews progress in slurry transportation research that has been done in Japan since the 1960s, when large-scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are focused on.

At the Highway gold deposit, 37 kilometres south of Charters Towers, gold mineralisation occurs in several stratiform layers and is enriched near the surface by lateritic weathering. The host rocks of the mineralisation are ferruginous and baritic, intensely sericitised, kaolinised and silicified rhyolitic tuffs and pyroclastics of the Cambrian-Ordovician Mount Windsor Volcanics. The geology of the deposit is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.Forty-six reverse circulation percussion drill holes were completed by North-Queensland Resources N.L. for a total of 2,093 metres of drilling to further outline and test the open pit resource. The drilling indicated a resource of 171,000 tonnes averaging 4.4 grams per tonne gold and 5.0 grams per tonne silver.A shallow initial pit, approximately 30 metres deep, has been designed to mine the high grade upper portion of the western stratiform layer and part of the eastern layer. This initial pit is designed to mine 45,400 tonnes of western mineralisation at an average grade of 7.84 grams per tonne gold and 22,200 tonnes of eastern mineralisation at an average grade of 1.42 grams per tonne gold. Waste is estimated at 110,900 tonnes.

The stress waves generated during delay blasting in underground or surface mines not only fracture the surrounding coal, rock, or other strata, but also impact delayed charges remaining in neighboring boreholes. This crossing wave interaction is a ubiquitous fundamental damage mechanism, ultimately responsible for numerous occurrences of misfires and flyrock. The hazards and waste from wave-induced malfunctions are Just the recognized tip of the iceberg. Undetected marginal performance of damaged delay detonators and desensitized charges poses a tremendous unresolved problem, resulting in the reduction of mining profits and the certain retention of unwanted risks.

Copper sulphides Concentrates, from the flotation process of copper primary ore; contain, commonly, small amounts of precious metals, such as gold and silver. During the smelting process of those concentrate all gold and silver are practically in the blister copper, which is cast into anodes. Those copper anodes are electrorefined in an electrolytic system, where the electrolyte is an acid copper sulphate solution, where a high purity electrolytic copper is produced (>999,9/1000). The slime when submitted to an oxidative leaching process, using sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide as oxidizing agents, turn those metals into solution. This research practical work, apart from concentrating effort on the digestion of the anode slime, aims at evaluating the efficiency of the cementation process of the metals of interest for the separation of them to take place. 141

A numerical study of the vulnerability of unlined tunnels in jointed rock has been performed with the STEALTH computer program, using the CAVS model for jointed rock. CAVS, for Cracking And Void Strain, is a constitutive model that can simulate the initiation/propagation of fractures and the slip along fracture planes in a jointed rock mass. The CAVS model is unique because it represents a spatially oriented approach to rock failure, rather than the traditional invariant formulation, and because the CAVS submodels for slip friction and slip-induced dilatancy are used to represent the weakening influence of joints, rather than applying ad hoc modifications to the elastic moduli of the host rock. The CAVS model, as embedded in the STEALTH computer program, has performed numerical simulations of tunnel collapse at high overstress levels. These calculations show that the ultimate strength of the tunnel depends strongly on the joint properties, and that the results of the calculations are in qualitative agreement with the observed data for collapse of a tunnel in tuff.

INTRODUCTION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is a relatively low-cost instrument developed by Hawkes and Bailey (1973) and was originally intended to monitor stress changes in mine pillars subjected to uniaxial stress changes. In this regard, this instrument has found considerable use by the mining industry. More recently, there have been attempts to use the stressmeter for determination of more general changes of the in situ rock stress. This paper reports on a study to characterize the performance of the rigid inclusion stressmeter for this application and presents results on the effect of anisotropic stress changes. These stress changes must be accounted for to properly analyze general changes of the in situ rock stress. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is an instrument designed to measure variations of the in situ stress around a borehole. The stressmeter studied in this work, is manufactured by Irad Gage, Div. Creare Products, Inc. Lebanon, New Hampshire. It consists of a stiff hollow steel gage body that is preloaded across a borehole diameter. The preloading is activated by sliding a wedge between an upper platen and the gage body. The beneficiation potentials of two Indian iron ore slime samples by flotation technique using both cationic and anionic collectors are investigated. The direct and reverse flotation of slimes using oleic acid and dodecylamine as the collector have been studied using both conventional cell and flotation column to upgrade the iron content. The characterisation studies of iron ore slimes indicated that the samples are extremely fine in nature and contain substantial amounts of martite, magnetite, goethite, limonite, kaolinite and quartz beside hematite as the dominant iron mineral phase. The samples on average contain around 52 - 58 per cent Fe, four to seven per cent SiO2 and five to six per cent Al2O3. Taking into account the physico-chemical properties of the slimes, it is attributed that both the samples need to be deslimed by hydrocyclone before flotation. The results of both cell and column studies on sample I showed that a feed containing 57.5 per cent Fe could be upgraded to 65.5 per cent Fe at 50 per cent overall recovery with simultaneous decrease in SiO2 and Al2O3 content to 2.3 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively by using oleic acid as the collector. In the case of sample II, it has been established that reverse flotation of silica is the better technique to improve both the grade and recovery of iron. Batch flotation studies in cell indicated that a product with 63.1 per cent Fe could be obtained at 40.0 per cent yield with 63.6 per cent iron recovery by the combination of reagents such as gum acacia, sodium hexa meta phosphate and dodecylamine. The performance of column flotation techniques is far superior to that of the cell with respect to both grade and recovery. The concentrates are found to be quite suitable for commercial exploitation as pellet feed.

Seismic tomographic imaging has been applied to determine the blast induced damage zones in bauxite pillars in underground mining. At the retreating stage, when pillar dimensions are reduced from 8 x 8 m to approximately 5 x 5 m, the' seismic tomographies reveal, through measurements of the P-wave velocities which is a measure of the degree of fracturation of the pillar rock mass, the presence of three zones within each pillar. In the external zone, where velocities recorded are below 750 m/s. extensive pillar damage occurs which is attributed to both the growth and coalescence of pre-existing cracks and even the creation of new cracks in the rock mass. This effect is in agreement with literature, when considering the peak particle velocity as a criterion for rock failure in tunnels. In the intermediate zone, where velocities range between 7S0-1000 m/s, damage to a much lesser extent occurs which is due mostly to growth of pre-existing cracks and widening of their apertures. The inner zone, where velocities exceed 1000 m/s, is considered to be unaffected by blasting. Simple remedial measures of low cost, which are based on blasting mechanics are proposed to minimise the blast induced damage zone and consequently the transition zone.

The total production of oil in Mexico in 1942 was 34,715,547 bbl.; that is, 8,179,254 bbl. less than the amount produced in 1941. The daily average for 1942 was 95,111 bbl., while that for 1941 was I17,520 barrels. The reduction of 22,409 bbl. per day in production was due to a decrease in exports because of the scarcity of tankers. This reduction has affected principally the Northern and Southern districts of the Tampico area; in December the Northern district (Panuco) was producing less than zoo0 bbl. per day with 445 wells shut down and the Southern district (GolJen Lane) less than $000 bbl. per day with 140 wells shut down. Drilling.—During the year 14 wells were drilled in Mexico, of which five were productive. Seven dry holes were drilled in Ebano, Tampico Northern district, in search for new producing fractures; plans are being made to explore this area by means of resistivity measurements. Three producing wells were completed in Poza Rica. Drilling in this important field will continue during 1943 to determine its extension to the west. In the Isthmus of Tehuantepec no wells were completed. Two gas wells were completed in northeastern Mexico. Wildcats.-—Two wildcat wells were completed during the year, to test the extension of the Golden Lane to the south; both were unproductive. In the Isthmus a deeper sand was found in the El Plan field* This discovery has made an important increase in the reserves in this field and will allow an increase in the production of the area during 1943. In December, three exploration wells were being drilled, two in the Tampico area and one in the Isthmus. Operating Technology.— Satisfactory progress has been made in Mexico in the application of petroleum engineering to the development and operation of the oil fields. Mud control is now an established practice and has lessened the number of fishing jobs and has allowed more open hole to be carried than formerly was possible. During 1942 the first effective use was made of determinations of bottom-hole pressure, and other modern production practices such as gun-perforating and squeeze-cementing are being introduced. Plans for 1943 The oil production during 1943 is expected to be slightly larger than that of 1942, especially if tankers are available for exporting crude and refined products. The Government proposes to increase exploration and drilling activities to increase the reserves and potential production of the country; about 50 wells will be drilled during the year, including wildcat wells in northeastern Mexico, Tampico and Isthmus areas and exploitation wells in the Ebano-Panuco, Poza Rica, El Plan and Cuichapa fields. Vapor pressures of eight compositions of Mg-Cd have been determined by the Knudsen effusion technique. Measurements are made at several temperatures for each alloy and the results interpolated to a common temperature for the calculation of the activities. It is not possible to obtain values for the partial molar enthalpies because of the narrow temperature range spanned by the measurements. The results show less precision than those obtained for pure Cd which are also reborted. These alloys are extremely susceptible to corrosion which provides a possible explanation for the lack of precision. Nevertheless, the values of the activity are in good agreement with the results of electromotive force measurements previously reported for the Mg-Cd system. MAGNESIUM and cadmium are mutually soluble in all proportions in the solid state and form a single phase which has the hexagonal close-packed structure. X-ray investigations of this system1,2 have revealed a rapid variation in the relative dimensions of the unit cell occurring at approximately 50 at. pct. The rate of change of the c/a ratio with composition increases markedly for alloys containing more than 50 at. pct Cd. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the activity of Cd in the neighborhood of 50 at. pct and to discover whether or not the thermo-dynamic properties undergo a similar rapid change. The activities are calculated from vapor pressure data obtained by the Knudsen effusion method. Unfortunately the precision of the data from which the thermodynamic values are calculated is insufficient to establish unequivocally a departure from the normal trend. The results are reported primarily because they substantiate the only previously reported activity measurements3 and because they include values for pure Cd which in contrast to those of the alloys show excellent precision. The Cd-Mg system is known to contain several ordered phases. However, this investigation was made at temperatures considerably above the transition temperatures, and the alloys may be regarded as nearly random solid solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus—The effusion cells are machined from solid tantalum rod. The lids consist of threaded, flanged rings of tantalum onto which are welded shallow cups of 4 mil molybdenum foil. The orifice, which is located at its center, is made by grinding off a small dimple produced with a sharpened punch. Such an orifice has been mounted in plastic, sectioned, and the thickness of the orifice edge measured in a microscope. The maximum thickness is 0.00016 in., and the Clausing factor is consequently equated to unity. The area of the orifice is determined by tracing its projection on the screen of the metallograph at a known magnification and measuring the area of the tracing with a planimeter. With the utilization of most of the "high dam" sites for hydro-electric power and the completion of most railroad routes, many tunnel contractors were extremely doubtful that tunnel driving would continue to be an important element of heavy contracting. Experience has proved otherwise. The ever-increasing need for rapid transit and for pollution control have generated, and will continue for the indefinite future to generate, a very high level of tunneling activity. At the same time, the costs of construction have traveled an upward curve in the tunnel industry, as in all other types of construction. As a result, Owners, Engineers and Contractors have sought ways and means of constructing more economically through the development and use of labor-saving devices and techniques. The development of mining machines and lasers has contributed tremendously to such economy. Before giving you a contractor's viewpoint on Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships in tunneling, it may be well to provide some background as to matters which give rise to that viewpoint. Construction contractors in general, and tunnel contractors in particular, have always had to contend with the physical environment in which the work has to be accomplished. However, when a building contractor has constructed his foundation, and certainly after he has "closed in", he deals thereafter with known physical conditions, or at least with conditions which he could reasonably have estimated would occur. Except, perhaps, for the hazard as to earthquakes, he has cleared Nature's threats. A tunnel contractor, however, must give thought to what the physical environment may do to his job, each and every day that he is driving a tunnel. The general consensus among tunnel men is that Mother Nature is much more likely to be murderous than motherly. Without attempting to make too much of
