In its dual role of pig-iron smelter and gas producer, the blast furnace is a remarkably satisfactory and efficient apparatus. Many metallurgists and engineers have pointed out, however, that since the primary function of the blast furnace is to produce pig iron at the lowest possible cost, its function as a gas producer should be subordinated to this primary purpose. During the past 10 years or more, improvements in blast-furnace technique and economy have, in fact, been directed primarily to increasing efficiency in the use of the reducing power of the gases produced by combustion of coke at the tuyeres, to reduce iron ore within the furnace. The net over-all result is a decrease in the fuel value of the top gas per unit of volume, and per ton of pig iron, which is evidently more than offset in value by the corollary saving in coke and the possibility of increased furnace capacity, for otherwise there would be no point in making such improvements. The purpose of the present paper is to suggest that, while progress has been made in this direction, there is another approach to the problem of increasing the chemical and thermal efficiency of the blast furnace in its primary role as a pig-iron smelter, which appears to offer possibilities of improvement in over-all ecorlomy of a different order of magnitude than results thus far obtained by the use of other expedients. The present argument is based in large part upon the hypothesis that the efficiency and economics of pig-iron smelting are seriously and adversely affected by the phenomenon known as "solution loss," and that the problem of solution loss call be successfully attacked by increasing the over-all pressure; i.e., the "top prcssure" under which the furnace is operated. It is indicated that pressure operation may also be expected to result in concomitant benefits, which may be summed up as generally improved operating conditions, together with a substantial saving in fuel and/or a substantial increase in furnace capacity. Underground mine workers are continuously exposed to many sources of noise and vibration in carrying out their tasks. Even though the vibration and sound level of some mining equipment is documented, it was found that this information is not readily available for many pieces of equipment and that it is not considered when choosing equipment or planning tasks. As well, health problems related to vibration and noise are among the main causes of work-related compensations in mines. Considering those facts and although no Canadian regulations could force employers to limit the exposure of their workers to vibration, the Société de recherche et développement minier (SOREDEM) decided to address the problem by including vibration among their research priorities. In order to characterize noise and vibration sources of different mining equipment used for underground mining, the authors have performed a study in 8 different mines in Québec on 28 different mining equipments. The paper will present the procedure that was followed to select the list of equipment to be evaluated and the low cost acquisition system developed to perform multichannel time domain acquisition in harsh environments. It will also present the results obtained for the noise level produced by the equipment as well as for the hand-arm and whole-body vibration exposures.

Whilst much has been written in past years by geologists, scientists, mining engineers, etc., regarding the well·known and justly notorious anticlinal, or, as they are more commonly known, " saddle" reefs of Bendigo, comparatively little noticehas been given to the synclinal or "inverted saddle "reefs and their relationship with each other. In taking up the question of the synclinal folds, I recognise that it is a large undertaking to confine within the limits of a short paper, and at the same time convey a comprehensive idea of their characteristics, and the importance of their relationship with the anticlinal folds, in the general question of practical mining. However, from a practical point of view I consider the question of great importance, and if an interest in it can be awakened, more particularly among practical men, the object of this paper will be achieved.Before entering into the subject I must briefly state some facts, and perhaps some theories, in respect to the deposition of the Lower Silurian rocks, and their subsequent buckling up, as now seen on the Bendigo gold-field. At the same time, I do not intend to go very closely into the geological aspect of the question, as I wish the paper to be considered as a practical one.

The Klondike symbolized one of mankind's driving forces - the desire to lay one's hands on a scarce resource, gold, in that case - and in doing so to make some money along the way. It can be argued that construction aggregates - a once lowly and ignored sector of the natural resource industries - have become the desired targets of their own "Klondike." This began in the 1970s and accelerated to a frantic pace in the 1980s. The scope of industrial minerals is very wide. It ranges from high value minerals such as talc, bentonite and kaolinite to the truly humble minerals of sands and gravels, limestones and granites. Their major end uses are in construction aggregates. A rich variety of different mineral types all make good construction aggregates. However, those successfully used have two fundamentals in common: • Their technical characteristics are appropriate for the requirements of their end use. • They are located within an economic distance from the market. The North American market This is the largest construction ag¬gregate market in the world. Consumption in 1990 reached 2.2 Gt/a(2.5 billion stpy). This rate of consumption has grown steadily over the past decades. In the United States, from 1963 to 1989, it averaged a 1.6% compound growth rate. Within this long-term trend, there are business cycles, because aggregate demand is closely linked to economic strength or weakness. The North American market also displays the greatest per capita demand for aggregates when compared to the major industrial economies (Table 1).

A review of ground control procedures in Western Australian underground mines is presented. Geotechnical input into initial mine design and methods of ground control is rare. As a result, the frequency of unexpected rockfalls is comparatively high, with over three quarters of the mines adopting non-specialist ground control designs experiencing unexpected falls-of-ground. In contrast, mines that provide some level of specialist input into initial ground control design experience decreased rockfall frequencies.

Overburden movement as a result of longwall mining can be classified into, in ascending order, caving zone, fractured zone, and bending zone. Operation experience and laboratory research have demonstrated that there are bed separations in the bending zone due to differential movement and rock mechanics properties between adjacent strata. In china several coal mines have injected flyash into bed separations to prevent strata movement and control surface subsidence. This method is very effective because it can reduce surface subsidence by 35-55%. Combining the field survey results and laboratory simulation research, the author has investigated bed separation and its mechanisms and effect of backfilling the bed separation and its mechanisms. Finally backfilling application in three mines are introduced, including grout flow chart, grouting pressure, and radius.

Asimismo, se consideran las condiciones de roca intemperizadas, las lluvias y los temblores presentados en algunas áreas del Perú. Producto de esta revisión, se analizará los problemas típicos de estabilidad para diversos proyectos mineros.

The airborne geophysicist is a busy man these days. In his plane he may have the airborne magnetometer, the airborne scintillation counter, and the airborne electromagnetic surveying system. Each of these is an independent tool, but all require additional auxiliary equipment for locating the aircraft in space: recording altimeters and Shoran or aerial cameras. Now there is still another piece of equipment, the airborne magnetic gradiometer, an accessory to the magnetometer. To understand its uses, consider the function of the magnetometer itself. Aside from detecting magnetic ore, the airborne magnetometer finds greatest use in spotting intrusions of igneous material. Where there is enough contrast in magnetic susceptibility of igneous rock and adjacent formations, it outlines the intrusion. Certain minerals also influence the magnetometer directly, but with the exception of magnetite and possibly one or two others, their effect is weak and can be detected only when there is sufficient ore and the magnetometer flight passes very close to it.

Very little public domain information is available on the exploration signature of the Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt deposit. From 1987 to 1990 the BMR (now AGSO) carried out geological, geophysical and geochemical (whole-rock, stream, soil and rock chip) surveys within the South Alligator and Kakadu Conservation Zones and defined several key parameters useful for exploration programs. The essential geological ingredients for the style of Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt¦U deposit are oxidised, low pH fluids, dilatant fault structures, a thick neutral to oxidised cover sequence and chemical traps in the basement. In geophysical data, the areas surrounding the mineralisation can be detected by airborne magnetics as major lows in magnetite-rich rocks, whereas in airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data, imaged spectrometric channel ratios such as U2/I'h and U2/K highlighted alteration surrounding the deposits. Three types of stream-sediment and soil samples were taken from each site: (1) -1 mm mesh, 5 kg sample for bulk cyanide leach (BCL) analysis for Au, Pd, and Pt; (2) 1 kg sample of -1 mm mesh sediment for fire assay/ICPMS analysis for Au, Pt and Pd; and (3) 50 g - 180¦ mesh sample for a variety of trace element analyses, including Au, Pd and Pt. Techniques 2 and 3 gave similar results for Au, Pt and Pd, while the recovery rates for Pd and Pt from the BCL samples were considerably lower. Other trace elements did not define unique indicators for Pt or Pd mineralisation, as each sample reflected the dominant lithology in the drainage basin. Rock chip surveys were useful in determining which faults were associated with the ore fluid in regions of multiple fracturing. Results from these exploration-style surveys also confirmed that the Coronation Hill deposit is a variant of the unconformity-style of mineralisation, as all significant geochemical and/or geophysical results occur at or below the unconformity.

HISTORY The Surigao Nickel Refinery of Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corporation is located on Nonoc Island off the northwestern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines. Nonoc Island is part of the Surigao Mineral Reservation which had been identified as early as 1912. Initial interest in these deposits was due to their iron content, and their value as a nickel deposit was not seriously entertained until the late 1950's. The Philippine government undertook extensive test pitting and sampling programmes at that time and in the early sixties Marinduque became involved in helping to establish firmer ore reserves. Evaluations of the test pitting programme indicated reserves of 75,000,000 tonnes of ore averaging 1.22% Ni, 0.1% Co and 38.5% Fe. The Philippine government called for bids on the reservation in 1962 and Marinduque and Sherritt Gordon carried out some feasibility studies for the recovery of nickel from the deposit. However, it was not until 1968 that Marinduque was granted proper authority to exploit the Surigao deposits. Marinduque and Sherritt then entered into an agreement which allowed Marinduque to utilize a process developed by Sherritt for treating lateritic ores. During 1968, a 25 st/d pilot plant was erected in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta for the purpose of modelling all process steps. A 10,000 tonne ore sample was sent from Nonoc as feed stock for the pilot plant.

Increasing environmental awareness leads to a reflection on the consequences of a non-appropriate use of mining resources. In this sense the determination of the mining requirements for the building industry is the necessary prerequisite to activate planning in mining according to the principles of environmental sustainability. Experience shows that there is a relationship between the production of buildings in relation to the shape of the city and the resulting demand for minerals. The increasingly urgent demand for maintenance and restructuring by existing buildings will stretch further the demand for minerals with an excessive, no longer sustainable withdrawal, which will lead to focussing greater attention on environmental policies oriented to the use of alternative materials including materials from recycling. It is pointed out moreover that the joint action of land use planning and mining planning leads to interesting applications that have significant repercussions on the environment.

The high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) is a relatively new technology which offers the potential benefits in energy savings, circuit simplicity and improved product characteristics in minerals processing applications. Over 300 machines are now operating world-wide, but most of these are used for grinding cement clinker, and relatively few are used in conventional mineral processing. One of the rea- sons for its current limited use in the minerals processing industry is that design, scale-up and flowsheet assessment procedures are seen to be relatively immature and untested. This has reduced confidence in the potential application of the technology. To help rectify this situation an industry funded research project was undertaken, one of whose aims was to develop and prove a mathematical model of the HPGR and a scale-up procedure. Data were collected from tests using laboratory, pilot and in one case a full scale unit (2.2m diameter). A range of feed types were tested including quartz, limestone, kimberlite, bauxite, iron ore and gold ore. These data were then used to develop models of the size reduction performance, power draw, throughput and operating gap for a wide range of pressures, feed sizes, and roll speeds. This paper describes the models that have been initially developed and illustrates their accuracy using some of these data.

Separation of Nickel and Cobalt from Manganese, Magnesium and Calcium by Synergistic Solvent Extraction - From Batch Tests to Pilot Plant Operation The synergistic solvent extraction system consisting of Versatic 10/LIX63/TBP was used for the separation and purification of nickel and cobalt from synthetic laterite leach solution after iron removal. Very encouraging results were obtained for separating nickel and cobalt from manganese, magnesium and calcium. In batch tests, the organic composition of the synergistic system was optimised and very large synergistic shifts for nickel and cobalt were observed. The ?pH50(Mn-Co) and ?pH50(Mn-Ni) values were as large as 1.65 and 2.40, respectively. The extraction and stripping kinetics of nickel and cobalt was fast. Semi continuous extraction tests were conducted with a pH profile of 5.5/6.1/6.5 in three stages at 40¦C. The nickel and cobalt extractions reached 99.9 per cent with only 5 mg/L Ni and <1 mg/L Co left in the raffinate. With two stages of scrubbing, only 2 mg/L Mn and less than 1 mg/L Mg and Ca were left in the scrubbed organic solution. With two stripping stages, the stripping efficiencies of Ni and Co reached over 95 per cent. A fully continuous pilot plant operation was conducted successfully for 280 hours. With an O/A ratio of about 2 and a pH profile of 5.5/5.8/6.0/6.3 for the four stages EX1/EX2/Ex3/EX4, both nickel and cobalt were almost completely extracted. Using a pH profile of 5.4/5.0 for SC1/SC2, the manganese scrubbing efficiency was over 96 per cent. Using three strip stages, over 98 per cent Ni and 99 per cent Co were stripped with only 64 mg/L Ni in the stripped organic solution. The nickel concentration in the loaded strip liquor reached 83 g/L, resulting in a ?Ni of over 28 g/L. The chemical stability of the system was also assessed over 12 weeks under proposed industrial operating conditions. Operation exclusively under strip conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in LIX63 oxime half lives of 1.1 and 2.1 years, respectively. Operation exclusively under extract conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in oxime half lives of 0.26 and 0.82 years, respectively. Losses of Versatic 10 were less than four per cent.

The Omaha District, Corps of Engineers, has been doing subsurface exploration work for a number of years, both by contract and with its own forces. Certain practices and procedures concerning the recovery of large diameter cores have been developed which will be described in this paper. Geology Most of the drilling to date has been in connection with structures on the main stem of the Missouri River above Sioux City, Iowa. A wide variety of subsurface conditions has been encountered. The bedrock formations appear in regular order from the oldest to the youngest, traveling upstream; or in other words, the general regional dip is to the northwest. The oldest formation is the Carlile shale, a compaction or noncemented waxy shale of Cretaceous age. Because of its unce-mented, soft nature this shale has a tendency to grind or wash away when drilled. It also has a tendency to rebound or expand when the overlying pressures are removed. A 25-ft bed of sharp, friable sandstone called the Codell member is present near the top of the Carlile shale. This member is a cemented sediment, but in drilling, many of the sand grains are broken loose and exert extensive abrasive action on the core barrel and bit. Above the Carlile shale is the Niobrara chalk, a soft calcareous deposit with shaly horizons and some thin beds of bentonitic clay. The average thickness of this deposit is about 145 ft. It is soft enough to be sawed or bored with ordinary woodworking tools, yet is compact enough to be used as building block. The Pierre shale, the formation above the Niobrara chalk, is over 800 ft in thickness and is the most widespread material in the area. It is a dark colored, compaction shale containing numerous thin bentonitic clay seams and at certain horizons, hard manganese concretions. The shale has numerous faults and in addition, along the valley walls, has undergone considerable slumping. Joints, fault planes and slickensided surfaces are common features encountered in drilling and add to the difficulties of high core recovery. East of the Missouri River the bedrock is generally covered with from 100 to 200 ft of glacial till, composed of clays, silts, sands, gravels and boulders. The valley itself is filled with alluvial deposits, mostly of the sand and gravel sizes, and contains a buried preglacial or interglacial channel over 100 ft in depth. The overburden deposits require sampling in connection with engineering studies and must also be cased before the underlying bedrock can be cored. The diameter of the required overburden samples can thus have an indirect effect on the size of core recovered from the bedrock. Plant based on the New Jersey refluxing process has been installed at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to refine portion of the zinc output from the Imperial Smelting Furnace. Refining of impure zinc is effected by distillation in two stages in vertical columns compris- ing a series of superimposed silicon carbide trays designed such that ascending zinc vapours and descending liquid metal are in intimate contact. In the first stage the volatile elements (zinc and cadmium) are distilled from impure metal, condensed, and while still molten, fed to the second column in which zinc is boiled under controlled refluxing conditions to remove the cadmium content. The resultant zinc has a purity in excess of 99,995 per cent zinc. The availability of refined zinc has made possible the production of a number of zinc alloys for marketing in addition to the basis grades of zinc.

The Lead-Line Update held in conjunction with the 1977 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in St. Louis provided sessions on mining, mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, and economies to brief the record on the industry's activities and developments since the 1970 World Symposium on Lead and Line convened, also in St. Louis. Changes in the industry since 1970 have not been profound, notes the program committee, consisting of D. O. Rausch, F. M. Stephens, and B.C. Mariacher, cochairmen; and H. L. Clifford, S. C. Fall), and M. Snedeker. However, various environmental and conservation factors have had a direct impact on process consideration and operating practice; the result has been new mines, improved technology, and changing market opportunities. The general consensus of the participants is that the future for the Lead-zinc industry looks promising as new applications are found and new products resulting from intensive research reach the marketplace. The highlights of the HS technical papers presented at the 1977 session follows.

DISCOVERY of new ore in the Eureka district, Nevada, as a result of bold and persistent exploration based on a geologic interpretation of structure has recently aroused wide comment in mining circles. It may therefore be of interest to the profession to have a summary of the historical background and an account of the recent program of development. The mines of Eureka, discovered in the late 1860's, were the first important silverlead mines in the United States. They have a production record of more than fifty-one million dollars.1 After the ore bodies were apparently bottomed in the 1880's, repeated attempts to find new ore were unsuccessful until 1940, when a diamond-drill hole cut a 40-ft width of sulphide ore 1409 ft below the 841-ft level of the Locan shaft. The next hole cut 30 ft, of ore and three additional holes drilled in 1943 and 1944 showed the ore body to be continuous, Shaft sinking to reach and open up the ore body has been in progress since 1945. GEOLOGY Stratigraphy The ore in the Eureka district occurs in a series of Cambrian sediments which is exposed through a thickness of over 6000 ft.
