"The current increase in gold price may presage a resurgence of gold milling plants in Canada similar to that of the thirties. Because the industry has been at a low ebb for almost two decades, future operating responsibilities will likely devolve upon personnel with limited cyanidation experience. My comments, which may seem elementary to experienced operators, are directed towards these industry newcomers to highlight operational features in cyanidation which forty years' experience has shown me to 0e of importance. A brief review of what actually takes place in a cyanide circuit may help give a better understanding of the topics to be discussed.These will include: (1) expose the gold (2) dissolve the gold(3) make solid/liquid separation(4) recover the gold from solution.1. Expose the GoldThe chemical key to gold recovery by cyanidation lies in the ready solubility of the metal in a relatively weak solution (0.04%-0.075% NaCN equivalent by weight) of calcium or sodium cyanide. Obviously, dissolution cannot start unless the cya1ide is in contact with the gold. As an analogy, the yolk of a hard-boiled egg can oe taken to represent the gold particle and the egg white and shell, the surrounding gangue or sulphide host. As the sl1ell and white must be fractured to expose the yolk, similarly the surrounding gorngue or sulphide host must be broken or fractured to enable the cyanide solution to contact the gold."

The kinetics of the electrolytic oxidation of cyanide to cyanate on PbO2-coated stainless steel anodes have been studied by both experimental and theoretical means. The anodes were based on 316 steel and performed in a satisfactory fashion. The pH of the studied KCN solutions exhibited a constant value about 11. Values for all the kinetic parameters have been determined and a mechanism for the studied reaction is proposed.

Realising the circular economy (CE) is faced with some significant challenges. Process metallurgy and its infrastructure play key roles at the heart of making the CE work. Therefore, the enabling role of process metallurgy within the CE will be central to the discussion in this paper, touching among others on product and system design as well as the key metallurgical and other process fundamentals that need to be investigated and understood to make the CE a reality. The central role of materials and its processing will be discussed in an integrated circular cities perspective. A key focus will be a discussion on designing a resilient “Smart Materials Grid” using and innovating metallurgical process engineering tools, which will manage the flows through Sustainable Circular Cities. The discussion will be using copper as leitmotiv of the discussion i.e. from copper ore, to metal, to complex products, recycling, product design and simulation and its impact. INTRODUCTION The transformation of our economies from linear to circular models in which waste materials become resources is the focus of the Circular Economy (CE) paradigm. Its important intentions: to take control of the damage we have been doing to the planet to ensure its livability and the welfare of future generations. This can only be achieved through careful utilisation of human, natural and economic resources. The concept is derived from several others (Beaulieu et al., 2015), of which Cradle-to-Cradle, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Industrial Ecology, and Life Cycle Thinking are just a few. Other relevant concepts include resource efficiency (RE), design-for-recycling (DfR), and various others discussed by Blomsma and Brennan (2017) and Homrich et al. (2018), as well as various R-hierarchies e.g. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R). However, does society comprehend these concepts, the actors and actions that influence them and how they interact? Do we know the limits of CE? Does society understand the key role of Copper and other metals to rendering the CE operable? True life cycle and systems thinking, focussed on simulation-based, process and metallurgical design are required to answer these questions. Lieder and Rashid (2016) identify nine widely-varying fields that study the concept ranging from sustainability sciences and engineering to economics, business, law, and social sciences. Overlap between questions addressed highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration (Nanz et al., 2017) in the assessment of the current status, and further steps needed to transform to CE. This doesn’t apply just in academia, but also in industry where concrete implementation of CE needs to occur at multiple levels, thus necessitating cooperation between government, civil society and other stakeholders (Beaulieu et al., 2015).

"I arrived in Chicago in 1993 with Dr. Ralph Peck’s University of Illinois bulletin titled Engineering Properties of Chicago Subsoils (Bulletin 429), which he published in 1954 with William Reed. Being an outsider, I wanted to learn from Chicago geotechnical practice leaders that included Clyde Baker, Jr., John Gnaedinger, Charles Pfingsten, Dr. Safdar Gill, Robert Lukas and Dr. Jorj Osterberg, who have influenced foundation designs for the structures that make up the contemporary Chicago skyline. One of my immediate goals was to get the Illinois Structural Engineering license to be on par with the likes of Eli Cohen, Mike Tylk, Stan Korista, Bob Halverson, Joe Burns, Ron Johnson, Bill Baker, Bob Sinn, Chuck Anderson and Dave Eckmann, who have led their structural firms in the design of the skeletal core and frames of many of Chicago’s iconic buildings (and for many other buildings around the world). From my time with GEI Consultants (GEI), then on with STS Consultants (STS, and now AECOM), and now back with GEI, I have had the opportunity to analyze and design foundations and, with the help of many skilled foundations and building constructors, to verify that predicted foundation performance matches actual movement data. The theme of Chicago’s foundation design practice is to assume and verify. In 1948, Peck published the History of Building Foundations in Chicago (Bulletin 373) that was updated in 1998 by Baker, Pfingsten and Gnaedinger, who meticulously documented hundreds of Chicago’s foundations, and have shown the value of advanced analyses and testing to advance the deep foundation design practice that includes a variety of high-capacity driven and drilled deep foundations. Mehmet Uyanik, Peck and Baker have made Chicago’s subsurface into a full-scale foundation test laboratory. They confirmed soil mechanics principles like Terzaghi’s 1-D consolidation theory when early foundations bearing on sand-clay crust over soft to medium silty clays (e.g., Auditorium, Masonic Temple, Monadnock Block and Old Board of Trade buildings) took 40 to 60 years to consolidate clay 1 to 2 ft (0.3 to 0.6 m). They also confirmed proven increases in bearing pressures based on measured performance of deep foundations bearing on the glacially derived hardpan clay till and in solid dolomite that underlies Chicago."

The interaction of xanthate with SO2 in the flotation of sphalerite and chalcopy.ite is discussed. 'The SO depression of sphaledte is due to the decomposition reaction of xanthate by SO2 The decomposition reaction is dependent on the cole ratios of xanthate/SO2, oxygen concentration and pH. Xanthate adsorbs at a faster rate by chalcopyrite than sphalerite. The faster rate of xanthate adsorption by chalcopyrite and the specific action of S02 on the surface of chalcopy.ite facilitate the selective separation of chalcopyrite from sphaledte.

Nineteen field trials of the co-disposal of fine coal tailings and coarse coal wastes were conducted at the dual Goonyella-Riverside mine in Queensland and at the Hunter Valley No. 1 and Warkworth mines in New South Wales, Australia. The profiles of and the sorting that occurred on the co-disposal deltas are described and an existing theory of subaerial deposition, originally developed for mine tailings alone, is shown to apply to the co-disposed wastes. This enables the dimensionless profiles of large deltas, which may take years to deposit, to be predicted from data obtained from a small delta formed in a few days or even hours

In examining steel under the microscope, one is constantly confronted with structures that are difficult to interpret. Recently, in a collection of samples for exhibition purposes, the writer found a piece of open-hearth runner metal, 2 in. (50 mm.) in diameter, that had been fractured for use as a sample of cast-steel structure. On polishing and etching a section for the purpose of photographing a field to typify the microstructure of steel in the "as cast" condition, a variety of structures was found (Fig. 1) so arranged as to arouse interest at once. For a distance of about 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) from the skin of the runner, normal ingot structure was found (Fig. 2); this was followed by a zone, about 0.215 in. (5.5 mm.) wide, of considerably lower carbon content in which occurred a most pronounced Widmannstattian structure (Fig. 3); from this point on to the center of the runner, the metal was again of normal ingot structure (Fig. 4). Representative samples taken from the metal in the three zones showed the following analysis: Carbon Nickel Chromium Per Cent. Per Cent. PeR Cent. Metal from skin........................... 0.34 1.26 0.63 Widmannstattian zone.................... 0.21 1.18 0.63 Metal from center......................... 0.34 1.32 0.67 Such a condition might result from decarburization followed by recarburization of the skin. This section came from one of the branch runners to the bottom of the mold, not from the main runner, and it is difficult to conceive of decarburization occurring in this portion of a runner. If the metal were stripped while quite hot, some oxidation would take place but the recarburization is unaccounted for. It could not occur by segregation after solidification—the tendency then is for diffusion and homogeneity. The following seems to fit the conditions and is offered as an explanation. The outside layer of normal structure 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) thick was chilled on the walls of the runner brick when the molten metal first entered the runner. In recent years semi-solid processing of steel alloys has gain more attention among researchers. Production of high quality complex steel parts with higher mechanical properties is the final goal for all these researches. A thorough understanding of the flow behavior of the metal under investigation is the key for a successful process design. The material used in this research is M2 tool steel. The experiments were performed using a Searl-type concentric cylindrical rheometer which is specially designed for high temperature rheological measurements up to 1500 ºC. The rheological techniques were consisted of continuous cooling experiments and isothermal holding and also shear rate step change experiments for different solid fractions. Based on the rheological data a single phase thixotropic model has been derived and adopted to the measured data. The state of the microstructure has been applied through a structural parameter. The model fits well with the experiments.

The paper reviews the effects of fast-neutron irradiation on the tensile properties of austenitic stainless steels at irradiation temperatures of less than 400°C, using, as an example, work carried out at Pelindaba on an AISI 316 type steel produced in South Africa. Damage produced in these steels at higher irradiation temperatures and fluences is also briefly discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of some methods of overcoming or decreasing the effects of irradiation damage.

For a wetting phase displacing a nonwetting phase from a porous medium the distribution of the residual fluid may depend on displacement conditions. Although this subject has been debated in the literature, only a few experiments have been cited to support the various conclusions. Experimental results presented in this paper show that fluid distributions are dependent on imbibition pmcedures. Results agree qualitatively with predictions from the pore doublet model. If the rate of water imbibition is restricted, the nonwetting phase is trapped preferentially in .the larger pores as expected. But if the rate of water imbibition is unrestricted, trapping occurs somewhat more in the smaller pores. These conclusions were deduced primarily from relative permeability measurements. INTRODUCTION Relative permeabilities are known to depend on the saturation history of the porous medium. For either continuously increasing or continuously decreasing wetting phase saturations, however, they have normally been assumed to be single-valued functions of saturation. Severat investigators have compared relative permeabilities measured by different methods and have reported acceptable agreement.1-5 Studies of simple models of the displacement process suggest that the distribution of residual fluids can be influenced by the displacement method. If this is so, relative permeabilities also should depend on the method of displacement. These predictions have not been supported by experimental data. The object of this paper is to investigate experimentally some of the predictions of these model studies. The particular question of importance is whether steady-state and unsteady-state methods should be expected to give the same values of relative permeability. Much of the reported data showing agreement between steady-state and unsteady-state methods have been obtained on un consolidated sand. Johnson, Bossler and Naumann, however, compared steady-state and unsteady-state results for Weiler sandstone and found no significant differences.5 Levine made a detailed study of pressure and saturation distributions for a laboratory waterflood in a consolidated system but made no attempt to calculate performance from steady-state relative permeability data Bail and Marsden in a somewhat similar set of experiments did attempt a comparison of observations with predictions but the results were inconclusive.7 Excluding gravity, two forces affect the distribution of wetting and nonwetting phases during an unsteady-state, immiscible displacement: viscous and capillary forces. If relative permeabilities are indeed the same when measured by steady- or unsteady-state methods, the fluid distributions at the same fluid saturations must be similar for both methods. Furthermore, the implication is that the relation between capillary and viscous forces is the same for both methods insofar as the effect on microscopic fluid distributions is concerned. Unsteady-state displacements are normally run at high rates to maximize the ratio of the viscous to capillary forces. The objective is to reduce the effect of capillary forces on macroscopic fluid distributions. For floods in which the phase which wets the porous medium displaces the nonwetting phase, capillary forces compete with viscous forces in determining fluid distributions.8 The residual nonwetting phase is discontinuous. Competitive aspects of viscous and capillary forces and the resulting effect on water-oil distribution in porous media have been illustrated in an elementary way using a pore doublet model. This model and predictions from it have been discussed at considerable length by Rose and Witherspoon, Rose and Cleary and by Moore and Slobod.9-13 Rose and Witherspoon show that so long as water invades the model at a rate equal to or greater than the free imbibition rate, the water will move through the larger capillary of a doublet first and trap oil in the smaller capillary. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. This has resulted in asbestos finding its way - in fact, being welcomed - into literally hundreds of applications.

"In Europe, and therefore in Hungary opening a new mine is harder and harder. Depletion of mines, unfavourable legal and economic changes, and growing public concerns are the main reasons. Social and economic interests require total utilization of mineral raw materials of the operating mines, and furthermore utilization of waste heaps of the former mines. There are 5-6000 waste heaps of the operating and the closed mines in Hungary. 2000 of these waste heaps have already been estimated, and researches show that total amount of waste heaps can be calculated to 1 billion tones. These researches left out of consideration waste heaps exploited and placed in deep lignite mining. In several projects and researches we analysed processing of waste heap and possibilities to use its components. A processing technology for utilizing waste heaps has been developed based on laboratory and pilot plant tests. Great amount of useful materials of quarrying waste heaps can be utilized with this technology. Tests were also done for processing waste heap of a former ferrous metals mining. The developed processing technology contributes to use these waste heaps as aggregate for cement industry, as dielectric and aggregate for construction. The essay presents in details main characteristics of waste heaps, technologies already used for processing waste heaps of quarrying and ferrous metals mining, mass balances and qualitative parameters of the end products."

Introduction The Kaiser Resources Ltd. hydraulic coal mine is located in south eastern British Columbia, Canada, at the western end of the Crowsnest Pass, next to the Town of Sparwood. The seam presently being mined is the number 10, known locally as the Balmer seam, which is a high quality coking coal, 50 feet in thickness and of an average inclination of 35 degrees. The mine was designed in the late sixties as a small scale trial unit, and was to use a single monitor unit, working 3 shifts per day on a 5 day per week basis. Experience has proved the method to be so successful as to warrant the expansion of the ancilliary facilities to cater for the increased production. The annual raw coal production from this single monitor unit has risen from 108,988 short tons in 1970 to 942,334 short tons in 1975, with a total mine labour force of about 160 men including the surface de-watering plant, mine supervision and mine administration.

The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

Shock wave attenuation studies with three igneous rocks are reported: a spessartite elastic to low intensity stress waves, a diorite which is anelastic, and a porous scoria. The level of shock passing through a given thickness of rock has been determined by donor-receptor methods using high speed streak cameras. Test results include shock propagation velocities adjacent to the explosive, the dependence of test results upon test geometry, and the variation in shock wave attenuation in these three common igneous rock fabrics. The utilization of explosives in rock mediums involves a series of interrelated phenomena. These are the detonation process within the explosive, the transfer of energy from the explosion products to the surrounding rock medium in the form of sound or shock waves, and the transmission of the resulting waves through the rock medium to create damage in the rock mass. The subject of this paper is the investigation of the close-in phenomena that occur in the intensely shocked rock immediately adjacent to a detonating explosive charge. The specific aspects studied include propagation velocities, free surface velocities, pulse attenuations and the determination of the equations of state for the test rocks employed. In addition, a series of tests was conducted to indicate the dependence of the test results on the charge diameter utilized. The equations of state for rock materials have been investigated by a number of authors. Lombard, ',' Grine and Fowles,3,4 Zharkov, 5 Hughes and McQueen,6 Chabai,7,8 and Bass9 have published equation of state data on rock materials similar in structure or composition to those investigated in the study. Rinehart10 has prepared a voluminous tabulation of the available equation of state data from these publications and in addition has included data on many other rock and earth materials in his compilation. The reader is referred to the extensive tabulations and bibliography of Rinehart for classical studies involving the equations of state of metals and other solids and liquids. The problems of sympathetic detonation between drill holes in hard rock environments has received the attention of various authors as have the problems of explosive rock coupling close-in stress wave attenuation and explosive diameter effects. 11 to 18 In particular, the don or-receptor geometry of this report is very similar to the geometry of adjacent drill holes in rock. Most published pulse velocity and attenuation work in rock has been devoted to velocities at much lower amplitudes than those associated with close-in explosives phenomena and most attenuation studies involve transmission and attenuation across large spans of material. Excellent work in these areas has been published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and by many individuals and groups engaged in geophysical research. SELECTION OF TEST MATERIALS A series of rock materials was desired for this test program that would be meaningful industrially, and that would also yield comparative results from a research viewpoint. Based on the availability of a series of related petro-fabrics, for which there is an abundance of physical and shock response data, three igneous rocks were selected as the test series. The applicability of shock wave studies in igneous rocks to industrial problems is readily demonstrated. Hardrock tunneling, quarrying and mining take place in igneous rocks throughout the world. From a research point of view, igneous rocks exhibit a wide variety of grain sizes and considerable diversity in composition, yet the common igneous rocks have a general similarity in their constituent mineral structures and in their grain-to-grain bonding mechanisms. The latter is based on the concept of rock formation through magma cooling and crystallization, though the degree of liquefaction in granitic plutonic masses is indeed a moot question. THE American producers of silver are keenly alive to the importance of the silver problem and its vital effect on the mining industry in Montana and other States where precious-metal mining constitutes a basic industry. There are so many ramifications to the subject that one is tempted, no matter from what angle an approach is made, to digress along lines that inevitably lead into a maze of social, economic and financial problems, through which no clear pathway is marked, and regard¬ing which no definite opinion can be expressed, as the ultimate solution is dependent upon the policies adopted and carried out by the more important Governments with reference to their fiscal requirements and currency systems. The situation may be summarized in two questions First, what, if any, plan have the silver producers, as being the most directly interested, to offer in meeting the situation which will confront the industry upon the termination of purchases of domestic silver under the Pittman Act? Second, what, if any, assistance can be extended by the Government in connection with the problem? In answer to the first inquiry, while the matter has been the subject of discussion among the principal producers, they have been unable to formulate a defi-nite plan, principally because they have been and are dealing with a subject embracing many unknown fac-tors; and second, it has been felt that before any plan is adopted there should be indicated the extent to which cooperation on the part of the Government may be depended upon to enable a proper study of the situation to be made. In order to explain these rather cryptic statements, a general review of the situation may aid. Whatever differences of opinion there may have been in the past upon the subject of bi-metallism or the establishment of a fixed ratio between the coinage value of gold and silver, it will probably be conceded that it would be neither wise nor expedient to attempt a revival of this discussion, nor to undertake to solve the question by the adoption of such a remedy. Issues of contro-versial economics must be avoided, if possible-political economics will destroy rather than assist constructive effort.

"The composition and the possible utilization of a slag sample from a nickel smelter operation in the Sudbury district were investigated. The sample containing 0.136% Ni, 0.10% Co and 0.29% Cu could be characterized as a fayalit e slag with a sulphide bearing glass matrix. While the fayalite contains most of the Co, Ni is enriched within both sulphides and fayalite. Cu is only present in higher amounts in sulphides or metallic droplets. This, as well as the small grain sizes of the mineral phases, inhibits significant enrichment by mechanical methods. However preconcentration is possible by means of magnetic separation. An effective hydro metallurgical approach proved to be oxygen pressure leaching with sulphuric acid. Accordingly, the method proposed for processing the investigated slags is to combine the normal utilization as coarse construction material with pressure leaching of the fines and the ground upgraded magnetic fraction. Besides the recovery of base metals, the leaching process yields fine-grained residues, which, after addition of CaD, will set to a cement-like material, or can be used as a pozzolanic cement colour. INTRODUCTIONDuring the pyro metallurgical processing of nickel ores, the valuable metals nickel, cobalt and copper are enriched within the sulphide matte, similar to the smelting of copper ores. The resulting waste materials are slags, which may still contain valuable metal contents of up to 0.5% or above . These contents are close to the cut-off grades of some nickel-cop per-cobalt deposits. The methods that are used to recover copper from slags comprise in general further pyro metallurgical treatment, often after enrichment by flotation. Another area of application for such slags is their use as construction material. However, this might cause environmental problems if nickel containing dusts are produced.Based on one example, the characerization and a possible way of complete utilization of nickel smelter slag s as construction materials in combination with partial base metal recovery are described in this paper. The investigated slag sample was obtained from a dump site in the Sudbury district, Ontario. Detailed test series for process optimization were not possible during this study due to the limited available sample size."

North American ophiolite complexes are known to contain significant volcanogenic sulfide only in the following five areas: Newfoundland; Quebec; Applegate, Oregon; Rogue, Oregon; and Orca, Alaska. Most North American ophiolites, including the Baltimore, Kings-Sierra Nevada, and Del Puerto complexes, and those associated with the Franciscan, Trinity, eastern Oregon, and Cache Creek groups lack significant volcanogenic sulfide. The characteristics of sulfide-bearing ophiolites are: (1) manganozls cherts, and (2) fine, carbonaceous clastics inter- calated with pillow basalt and chert. It is suggested that sulfide- bearing ophiolite complexes developed in a restricted basin environment, such as is now present in the Gulf of California; whereas sulfide-poor ophiolites, formed in midocean, rises distant from land masses. Sea floor oxidation makes the typical midocean ridge configuration not conducive to sulfde preservation, whereas spreading centers bounded by land masses are more likely to produce anoxic physiographic lows favorable to sulfide accumulation.

DURING colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still func-tioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned pros-pects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul.
