A seismic system which utilizes in-mine geophones to detect trapped miners has been developed. Tests at the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and at two operating mines indicate such a system has a maximum detection range in excess of 1,000 feet. The system is field worthy and portable and requires less than 30 minutes to set up and check. Real-time detection is possible.

In the current climate, there is a real need to bridge the gap between theory and the real world mining considerations, and develop viable, cost-effective, high performance thickeners. With a greater need to extract profits from both difficult-to-process ores and lower grade orebodies, coupled with the necessity to produce 'greener', less water intensive technologies, suppliers need to take current thickener designs to the next level and into the 21st century. The complexity of 'getting it right' within a thickenerÆs feedwell, the 'nerve centre' of the thickener, is no small task. Delivering dilution water and mixing this water with incoming feed slurry, addition of flocculant, maximising flocculant-slurry interaction to build aggregate size, minimising unabsorbed flocculant percentage, volume average of solids volume fraction, momentum dissipation ratio, dilution recycle ratio, volume average shear, maximum shear rate at exit, aggregate size on exit, uniform discharge profile and more ù all of these need to occur in the right order and in the right proportions within the feedwell. This paper discusses the genesis and evolution of a new feedwell design, the first major innovation in the thickening industry in over 15 years.

ALL, strangers visiting this district are struck with the peculiar manner in which the pig-iron is graded. There are eleven regular grades, besides which, when gray forge is ordered, one-half of Nos. 1 and 2 Mill are shipped. Occasionally there is another grade Known as Silver Mill, which is made so seldom that I cannot describe it, and have no sample to exhibit. Most of you have found it difficult to grade properly and uniformly under the simpler system which obtains elsewhere, and can consequently readily imagine the increased difficulty with us. Each furnace employs an " expert," and even with this precaution, the system is not conducive, at all times, to amicable relations between buyers and sellers. I am told that it was adopted at the time Southern irons were seeking a market; but it still remains, although the time has come when our iron is sought for and has obtained for itself a place in the markets of the country. EUGENE COSTS, Calgary, Alberta (communication to the Secretary*).¬This new theory to account for the accumulation of commercial deposits of oil and gas, is deliberately and admittedly based on the hypothesis that the origin of these products is organic. Mr. Daly says (page 1142), "Should the organic origin of the petroleum that is found in pools be granted, the following interpretation is offered for the mechanics of its accumulation." But suppose the origin thus accepted by definition be incorrect, then what becomes of the diastrophic theory, Mr. Daly's interpretation? As Mr. Daly remarks himself (same page), "It is obvious that the history of petroleum will have to be entirely different, dependent upon its origin, either from emanations coming from the depths, or from organic decomposition in the strata themselves." Then why should one propound a theory, through which he is endeavoring to trace the history of petroleum, by starting with a definition of its origin? The origin should be the deduction, the forced conclusion of the theory, and not its starting point. Facts alone should be considered first, in any theory worth the name, until sufficient proofs have accumulated to permit of the deduction of a complete explanation for these facts. This would lead one to the origin through a real theory founded on facts, and not based on a preconceived idea perhaps true, but possibly fanciful. Mr. Daly's way can only lead on one road, namely the organic road, and, I repeat, it may be the wrong road. In the case of the petroleum deposits, as .I have endeavored to show in several papers on the subject, to which the reader may refer, the facts clearly lead to the force conclusion that their origin is not one of accumulations of hydrocarbons at first disseminated in the sedimentary strata but the reverse process of subsequent local infiltrations and impregnations of hydrocarbon emanations from the depths. This new theory, therefore, founded on, an erroneous conception of origin cannot be a help in the solution of the petroleum' problem, not any more than were the anti-theory or the hydraulic theory, both of which were also based on the same error, although Mr. Daly is inclined to think that the authors of these two theories did not accept the misconception boldly enough (page 1142). -

The recent description provided by Scott (1981) of the Ardlethan alteration systems is of particular interest as it draws attention to the analogy between Ardlethan and the porphyry tin systems of Bolivia (Sillitoe et aI, 1975).During 1978-1979 a parallel study of the mineralization confirmed that the extensive alteration pattern relates to a series of breccia pipes which provide access channelways for the mineralizing solutions (Clarke, 1979). Many of the results reported by Scott are difficult to interpret without this concept and this short discussion is intended to provide additional perspective to the proposed porphyry tin model.The breccia pipe systems are centred upon each of the major mineralized zones (Wild Cherry, Carpathia, Stackpool and White Crystal) and with the exception of the White Crystal collapse breccia the major pipes are of the hydrothermal intrusive type. They range considerably in size and shape and at least two ages of formation are revealed by their cross cutting relationships at the Stackpool, Carpathia and Ardwest regions. Individual pipes or groups of pipes have distinctive alteration/infill characteristics and the entire system can be viewed as a complex porphyry tin system evolving with time. The recognition of pipes of different types and ages reveals a situation considerably more complex than suspected by Scott, and hence both the geochemical data and modelling require reinterpretation.For instance, the geochemical data contained within Tables 2 and 3 (Scott, 1981) relate to two separate breccia pipes which correspond to the South Cherry and Ardwest ore zones respectively. Although it is probable that both pipes are temporarily identical it is important that the geochemical data be viewed in context. The brecciation is extremely difficult to recognize and it is probable that the chemical compositions given represent mixtures of altered fragments and rock flour, together with material precipitated from solution as matrix, along microfractures, within small vughs, etc.

Airborne respirable dust levels on longwalls can be reduced if operators approach the dust control problem in a logical and fundamental manner. This can be accomplished through the proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques. The Bureau of Mines is currently assessing the effectiveness of longwall dust control techniques in use today to provide mine operators with guidelines for selecting the most appropriate control technology. This paper presents a fundamental approach to the problem of shearer dust control. Three dust control techniques to be discussed are: deep cutting/increased pick penetration for reducing the amount of respirable dust generated; drum water sprays/improved water supply system to suppress the amount of airborne respirable dust; and improved external water spray system, the "shearer-clearer," to push the dust close to the face. The techniques have been evaluated in field trials and have been shown to be both practical and effective in applications to control shearer generated dust.

A geologic, petrographic and geochemical study has been performed on the pyroclastic flow deposits in the coastal area of East Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. This study leads to classification of the pyroclastic flow deposits into three associations: the extrusive type, the surge type and the ash flow type welded tuff associations. Through detailed investigation and comparison of the characteristics of these lithologic associations, with emphasis on the welded tuffs, a comprehensive model has been proposed to demonstrate the petrogenesis of the pyroclastic flow deposits.

Zirconium single crystals of various specific orientations were fabricated by rolling or drawing. The resulting textures were determined and are discussed with respect to the deformation modes that produced them. The crystals deformed in a predictable manner by combinations of up to third-order twinning with three twinning modes and by slip. Twinning was found to play a major role in initial texture formation. Texture changes produced by slip occurred only at the higher reductions. The twinning sequences that produced each intensity peak during the initial reductions could be identified. Schmid factor criteria were found useful in predicting which deformation modes to expect for each crystal orientation and fabrication procedure. The possible application of these data to poly-crystalline material is discussed. PREFERRED orientation or texture has a significant effect on the properties of most materials, causing anisotropy in fabricated cubic metals and enhancing the natural anisotropy of noncubic metals. This study evaluates the effects of several fabrication methods on the textures formed from specific starting orientations of zirconium single crystals and, it is hoped, gives an insight into the effects of the same operations on poly-crystalline material. BACKGROUND In fcc and bcc metals, texture changes take place by gradual lattice rotations caused by the operation of one or more slip systems. Deformation twinning plays an insignificant role in the deformation of such metals. In zirconium and its alloys, however, and in many other hep metals the ability to twin allows very rapid texture changes to be made with very small amounts of deformation. The deformation systems found in zirconium and its alloys are prism slip and three twinning modes.1 Slip occurs on the {1010}< 1120) system. There is little or no appreciable basal slip in zirconium. The twinning planes, illustrated in Fig. 1, are {1012}, {ll2l}, and {1122}. Two twinning modes, the {1012} and the {ll2l} operate for a tensile stress along the basal pole. A compressive stress parallel to the basal pole is required for {ll22} twinning. These twinning operations cause a 35- to 85-deg reorientation of the basal pole. The {1012} twin is the predominant tensile twin at room temperature. The twinning shears, S, are shown in the figure. A criterion for predicting which deformation system will operate when a grain is subjected to a known stress state is the Schmid (orientation) factor. This factor gives the fraction of the applied stress that computer program was written2 to calculate the Schmid factors for the four deformation modes in zirconium. It assumed three orthogonal stress axes and considered ninety-one different orientations of the basal pole in one octant of this stress space. At each basal pole position the Schmid factors were calculated for seven positions of rotation at 10-deg increments of the unit cell about the basal pole. Schmid factors were determined for a total of 637 orientations and for twenty-four deformation systems in each orientation. The program listed the Schmid factors for uniaxial stress parallel to each axis and, to approximate rolling, or-thonormal biaxial stress was also considered. Fig. 2 shows the range of orientations over which the various types of deformation would tend to predominate in biaxial plane strain with the stresses, equal magnitude. The exact boundary position between regions of different deformation modes depends, however, on the relative values of the critical shear stress for each deformation mode. Fig. 2 is drawn on the assumption that they are equal and it therefore may be only approximately correct. It is also recognized that the biaxial stress analysis may not be applicable in certain crystal orientations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of zone-refined zirconium, produced by Wilson of this Laboratory,3 were electrical-discharge-machined to form specimens for rolling, tube-drawing, and rod-drawing studies. Specimens were rolled at room temperature on 2-|--in.-diam hand-powered rolls from three different starting orientations: 1) the basal plane parallel to the rolling plane and the [1120] in the rolling direction, (0001)[ll20]; 2) the (1120) plane parallel to the rolling plane and the basal pole in the rolling direction, (1120)[0001]; and 3)_the (1120) plane parallel to the rolling plane and the [1100] in the rolling direction, (1120)[ll00]. An Investigation on the Effect of Chrysotile Particle Shape and Anisotropic Properites on the Rheology of Chrysotile Suspensions Chrysotile, a polymorph of serpentine, is a phyllosilicate mineral that occurs as a major gangue mineral in many ores (eg Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore, Western Australia). The rheological behaviour of chrysotile stems from two main factors: its distinctive morphology and its electrical surface charge. It is believed that these factors are central to the problematic rheological behaviour and low solids throughput typically experienced in the processing of such ores. In this work, a study of the effects of chrysotile surface charge properties and particle shape on the rheology of chrysotile suspensions was conducted. It was found that the rheology of suspensions of pure chrysotile is characterised by extremely high yield stress values over a broad pH range (pH 4 to 11).The disparity in the point of zero charge and range of maximum yield stress for chrysotile is consistent with the anisotropic nature of chrysotile particles. A comparison of the rheological behaviour of quartz suspensions (non-fibrous) to that of chrysotile suspensions (fibrous) provides a practical indication of the effects of the fibrous nature of chrysotile relative to non-fibrous minerals. The long, thin fibres are easily entangled to form suspensions with much higher plastic viscosities and Bingham yield stresses than non-fibrous particles. Chrysotile particle shape and surface charge are central to the rheology of chrysotile suspensions, although shape appears to play a more significant role in this regard. This fundamental study would be beneficial to the ongoing research for improved recovery in the Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore as well as other chrysotile bearing ores.

Driefontein Gold Mine together with Kloof Gold Mine and Beatrix Gold Mine forms part of Gold Fields South Africa. Driefontein Gold Mine is situated near the town of Carletonville, 50 km south of Johannesburg, in the Gauteng Province. The 4 Shaft East complex comprises of the 4 Main Shaft and the 4 Subvertical Shaft. The main shaft is 9150 m in diameter and was sunk in 1984 to a depth of 2000.5 m. The 4 Subvertical Shaft is 7320 m in diameter and was sunk during 1985 to a depth of 3006 m. Full production was, however, only reached during 1988. Intensive mining is currently being done between levels 28 to 42. In 2002 a decision was made to start mining the shaft pillar, situated between 32 and 33 level in the subvertical shaft. Intensive studies showed that with selective mining scheduling the total mineÆs life could be lengthened by nine years if accessed timeously. The higher grades present in the shaft pillar can be mixed with lower grades from the same reef band presently mined 1500 to 2000 m away from the subshaft pillar area. The shaft pillar comprises 50 per cent of the remaining ore resources available. However, no provisions were made in the initial phases of the shaft development to extract the shaft pillar. Grades between 4300 cmgt to 2500 cmgt relating to 23 and 14 g/t are present in the shaft pillar and an estimated 50 tonnes of gold can be produced from this pillar in the period from 2007 to 2015. The pillar extraction is the key to DriefonteinÆs long-term gold profile. Every geological feature possible is represented in this to-be-mined pillar area. The pillar around the shaft is a complex structure featuring hard and soft lava, sedimentary structures/plane parting that moves against each other, quartzite capping, etc. Replacement of services and secondary support systems were designed, modelled and put in place. The original steelwork was not designed to cope with the various stresses and movements, which are expected once the extraction process is started. Existing shaft steelwork was used as far as practically possible. The principal behind the design was that the steelwork would be totally disconnected from the shaft lining over its total length of 132 m in the area of the reef intersection. This will allow the steelwork to move independently from the geological structures surrounding it, allowing a certain degree of distortion of the shaft lining, moderate twist and tilt to take place without interfering with hoisting operations.

AngloGold operates various gold mines in South Africa, the largest of which are situated in the North West province. The impact of AngloGold Vaal River mining operations on the environment and, specifically, on aquifers and groundwater is assessed. The location of such aquifers and plumes is determined by remote-sensing and ground-sensing operations, followed up with the correct placement of monitoring boreholes from which information such as water rest levels, chemistry and geological data is gathered. This study utilises an integrated approach consisting of the following mutually reinforcing phases: Phase 1: Airborne multi spectral scanning; Phase 2: Airborne thermal remote sensing; Phase 3: Ground resistivity survey; Phase 4: Borehole placement; and Phase 5: Sampling and monitoring. The integration of the investigation tools and phases in use at AngloGold Vaal River has been found to be very useful in determining the exact sources of contamination, the direction of flow of such contamination, the positioning of interceptive measures and the analysis of such contamination. This adopted approach will enable the development of flow transport models that will further enhance our knowledge of contaminants in aquifers at the mine and enable management to conduct educated interventions.

ALTHOUGH annealing twins are frequently observed in many fcc metals, their occurrence in aluminum is relatively rare. ~ahn&apos; in his review of twinning has listed only a few references to observations of twins in aluminum, e.g., Refs. 2 and 3. They have also been shown to occur in evaporated aluminum layers.4 During the present work, several annealing twins were studied in aluminum. The specimens of 1099-grade aluminum had the following thermomechanical treatment: deformed 90 pct by rolling, partially re-crystallized, further deformed 60 pct to a final thickness of 100 p, then annealed for 24 hr at 120°C. This treatment produced several annealing twins—-about ten per electron microscope specimen. The specimens were produced by the window technique and examined in a Phillips E.M. 200 operating at 100 kv. A typical twin boundary is shown in Fig. 1. For several of the twins studied the twin plane could be tilted so that it was parallel to the electron beam, e.g., Fig. 2. The associated diffraction pattern, Fig. 3, shows the twinned relationship between the grains. The twinning plane in each case was (111). Use of a reflection common to both the twin and the matrix,* i.e., using reflecting planes parallel in the twin and the matrix, the coherent twin boundary becomes invisible and only the noncoherent segments of the stepped boundary are seen, e.g., Fig. 4. Trace analysis of the boundaries showed that the long straight portions were invariably the twin plane; i.e., these portions are coherent. The planes of the shorter segments are shown by Fig. 5 to be (551 1, (7111, and {211).

Three provinces in Canada—New Brunswick, Ontario and Alberta— produce oil and gas in commercial quantities. In addition a small amount of oil is being produced and refined in the Northwest Territories at Norman on the Mackenzie River. The production at Norman is derived from two wells drilled by Northwest (Imperial Oil) Co. in 1920 and 1923. The refined products of the oil are used locally in connection with mineral developments on Great Bear Lake. The production of petroleum by provinces and the consumption of natural gas are shown in Table 3. In addition a small amount of natural gas is produced in the southwestern part of Manitoba from shallow wells for local use. Tables 1 and 2 give detailed information. The greatest drilling activity in 1933 in Canada centered around the southern end of the Turner Valley field, Alberta. In addition to several wells previously commenced in this area, eleven new wells were begun. There were three completions to the Paleozoic producing zone in 1933 in the southern part of Turner Valley and one well was abandoned as a result of being off the favorable structure. As part of the application for this expansion, a comprehensive closure plan had to be developed and filed.Closure planning includes a systematic evaluation of the area to be developed, the development activities planned, the goals and objectives of the corporation in re-establishing landforms and ecosystems at the same time as running an effective operation. As early as is practical during the mine development, surface contouring is completed, soil is reconstructed, and vegetation, surface drainage and wetlands are re-established. Once active reclamation is complete and vegetation has been re-established, Suncor monitors maturation of landscapes and ecosystems to provide the submission basis for reclamation certification"

INTRODUCTION Uranium mill tailings, by-products from the mining and milling of uranium oxide contain all decay products of uranium-238, uranium-235 and all the Th-232. The ore containing all daughter products of the parents U-238, U-235 and Th-232 is ground to approximately 50% under 200 mesh particle size and after extraction of uranium, the residue, described as tailings, is discharged into natural depressions confined by dams. These deposition sites are referred to as tailings ponds. Tailings ponds are located in two mining districts, Bancroft and Elliot Lake in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Some parts of tailings ponds are dry up to a depth of several meters, whereas other parts have a water table very close to the surface and still others are covered with water. The extent to which the daughters of uranium isotopes are in equilibrium with the parents U-238 and U-235 is dependent on the age of the deposit in which uranium occurs and the extent to which the decay products are removed by geochemical processes. In the mining district of Bancroft, the deposit is known to be approximately 1 billion years old, whereas in Elliot Lake, the deposit is considered to be approximately 2 billion years old. The ratio of radiogenic lead isotopes Pb-206 and Pb-207, can provide some estimates concerning the age of the deposits. If the tailings are not affected by geochemical processes, the tailings would contain all the daughters of the 4n+2 and 4n+3 series in equilibrium concentrations. The equilibrium activities of some members of the 4n+2 series are calculated in Table 1. [ ] The amount of radiogenic stable lead isotopes depends on the age of the ore deposits. If the deposit in each district is of the same age, a definite relationship is expected with respect to the activity of Pb-210 and the radiogenic stable isotopes. Approximately 33 million tons of the tailings have been deposited in the early 1960&apos;s, approximately 20 years ago. During this period of storage, the segregation of uranium daughters, like radium, the diffusion of gaseous product, Rn-222, and removal of precursors by geochemical processes, can cause dis-equilibrium. Earlier work concerned with the uptake of Ra-226 and Pb-210 by plants (Kalin and Sharma, 1981), indicated that the concentrations of Pb-210,in samples of the tailings taken, were lower than the expected equilibrium. The diffusion of radon from a variety of matrices has been studied (Tanner, 1964). It has been shown that the diffusion coefficient is dependent on the particle size in which its precursor is present, the moisture content and the surface conditions. The direct measurement of radon concentrations in the environment near the ponds is dependent on the metereological conditions. Kramer, Schroeder and Evans, 1964, have examined the variations in the concentration of radon near the ground level with respect to atmospheric variables, such as changes in barometric pressure, precipitation, wind velocities, thermal atmospheric instability. It is difficult to relate the total release of radon from the ponds to the atmosphere over an extended period. Our measurements of Pb-210 and total lead on tailings samples taken from 16 sites indicate that the ratios of the activity of Pb-210 to the mass of total lead can provide parameters which are helpful in the estimation of the total amount of radon and its decay products diffusing from the tailings ponds. In this paper, we present the results of measurements of activities of Ra-226, Pb-210 and total lead in samples from various ponds situated in both mining districts. The measurements were confined to samples taken at 0-25 cm depth from the surface.

Mount Isa Mines Limited (Isamine) has process control computers in the major surface plants -- lead smelter, copper smelter, lead/zinc concentrator, and copper concentrator. HP computers are used to implement the more complex stabilizing control loops and control schemes aimed at optimizing plant performance. The choice of control strategies is discussed with particular reference to long-term performance in metallurgical plants. These control schemes must be understood by the process metallurgists who are responsible for the performance and initial fault finding. Major emphasis has been placed on the ability of the control systems to handle most of the common plant upset conditions as well as providing improved performance under normal operating conditions. To illustrate the approaches adopted, the lead/zinc concentrator crushing system and the process bag- house control system for lead smelter off-gas handling are reviewed in detail. The improvements in both of these areas resulting from control systems implementation are discussed.

Papua New Guinea&apos;s mainland is dominated by a foreland thrust belt, which can be divided into two zones. The "body" zone is floored by Palaeozoic granites and metamorphics of the Fly Platform (Tasman Orogen). Underlying the "tail" zone is Papuan Plateau, rifted from the Tasman Orogen during Coral Sea spreading, and believed to underlie the Papuan Peninsula and Papuan Islands region (D&apos;Entrecasteaux, Woodlark, Misima, Sudest, and Rossel Islands). Thrusting began in the Miocene and continues today in the crust below the "body" zone. The youngest known thrusted rocks in the "tail" zone are Pliocene in age. Recognition of foreland thrusting has major implications for petroleum prospectivity of the Papuan and North New Guinea Basins, mineral exploration prospectivity, and geological terrane identification in PNG.

DURING the last half century a great amount, of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and-slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every, dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus,, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old dumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the nineteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the .place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of. years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands and slimes :- The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the huddles and round tables on . the other.1 For the profitable treatment of the very finest slimes, round tables have as a last resort proved more satisfactory and economical than other machines.

The National Commission of Atomic Energy is investigating a suitable physicochemical process for the conditioning of spent nuclear fuel and treatment of the scrap of research reactors of the Al-UxSiy type. A possible way of processing is through dry chlorination of the cladding with the purpose of selective separation of the aluminium from the remaining elements such as Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu, etc. transforming them into volatile chlorides. Some important advantages of this method are the thermal stability of the chlorides that allow the easy separation of the halides by physical methods and the low volume of radioactive waste generated. The interactions in the following systems were studied in the range of temperature between 150º-500°C: Al-Fe, Al-Ni, Al-Cu, Al-Zn, Cu-Zn and the pure metals. We found that the reactivity was different depending on if the elements were alloyed or separated. The separation factors of the systems under study were determined. Nickel is perfectly separated from aluminium for all temperatures, whereas good conditions for copper separation were achieved below 400ºC. In the case of iron, complete isolation was never attained. However, by decreasing temperature to 150ºC it is possible to obtain aluminium chloride with less iron content. The separation of zinc from the product was also difficult. It was detected that zinc chloride volatilization decreases when other chlorides were present, for example cooper chlorides. In the Cu-Zn alloy, zinc chlorides remained in the condensed product due to interactions with copper. The samples were characterized by scanning- electron microscopy (SEM), X ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic absorption.
