A method of calculating activities in binary systems having miscibility gaps is described. The method, which applies only to the phase in which the gap occurs, is exact when the function defined by the equation varies linearly with composition. Analytical and numerical solutions (as a function of the conjugate phase compositions) are presented for two coefficients A and B from which the thermodynamic activities can be calculated. Deviations from Henry's law, calculable by the method presented, are shown graphically for the particula~ case of the component i at the edge of the miscibility gap more remote .from pure component i. For symmetrical gaps, the deviation from Henry's law at this gap edge becomes smaller as the gap becomes wider, The interrelation of gap location, the direction of departures from Henry's law and the occurrence of maxima and minzma in these departures is discussed in some detail. Values for a and for activity calculated from phase diagrams show fair to excellent agreement with corresponding experimental values in the Al-Zn and CaO-SiO2 systems. WHEN structurally similar phases, B and 6, lie at the sides of a two-phase region in a constitution diagram, it can be assumed that, stably or metast-ably, they will become completely miscible at a higher temperature. The B and 6 phases are particular composition ranges of a single B6 phase region with a miscibility gap. Below, as above, the critical solution temperature, the free energy of formation of the 06 phase is a continuous function of composition through the range of the miscibility gap. It is the purpose of this paper to use this continuous free-energy function in order to develop a simple method for computing the thermodynamic activities in the B6 solution of a binary system. THE Montreal mine, operated by the Montreal Mining Co., is four miles west of Ironwood, Mich., in Iron County, Wisconsin. It is the westernmost producing property on the Gogebic Iron Range of the Lake Superior district. Its production is 4000 tons of hematite per day from an average depth of 2300 ft. This tonnage is hoisted through a five-compartment vertical shaft. Several mining methods are in use but in the larger orebodies the method is sublevel caving. ORE OCCURRENCE AND CHARACTERISTICS The main orebodies of the Montreal mine lie in eastward-pitching troughs formed by the intersections of intrusive dikes with impervious members of the iron formation. The formation has an average width of 425 ft., strikes east and west and clips north at approximately 62°. The dikes dip south at 45° and bear north 20° from the strike of the formation, making the intersections with various members pitch east at 16°. The dikes are not continuous across the formation but are interrupted ,by a longitudinal bedding fault, which has a throw of 380 ft. vertically and 885 ft. horizontally. North of the fault zone the formation is called "hanging," south it is called "footwall" formation. The faulting has created two ore-bearing horizons; viz., at the inter-section of hanging dikes with the slate members and the foot dikes with the quartzite footwall. In each formation the main ore-bearing member consists of wavy beds of hard chest interlaid with hematite. In the most productive part of the mine, where the sublevel caving method is employed, a hanging-formation dike lies in juxtaposition with a footwall dike and the iron formation carries ore in certain sections from the quartzite footwall to the hanging (like. Here a horizontal section of the orebody may be 300 to 400 ft. wide for a length of 150 ft. or more and tail out lengthwise in both the foot and hanging formations. The footwall ore section is much longer than the hanging wall because of the orebody's greater height above the "pitching dike."

(New York Meeting, February, 1913.) THE Elk City mining district of Idaho occupies a position near the geographical center of Idaho county, a region of mod¬erate elevation in the western foot-hills of the Bitter Root mountains. The district comprises an area of approximately 350 sq. miles, bounded oil the west by the Newsome district and on the south by the Dixie and Oro Grande districts. There are no mining districts to the north or east. Elk City, the principal town and the seat of the mining office for the district, is situated in a hydrographical basin surrounded by low hills. The elevation is 4,200 ft. above sear level. Through this basin flow Elk Creek, Red river, and American river, which unite west of town to form the south fork of the Clearwater. The one township is set out from the Bitter Root Forest Reserve. Though a railroad starting from the Stites terminus of the Clearwater Short Line of the Northern Pacific railroad has been under consideration for some years, the camp is yet with¬out railroad facilities. The projected road would follow the south fork of the Clearwater on easy grades, but would be very expensive to build and maintain. While such a road would greatly benefit those who are now operating in the camp, and in a slight degree stimulate interest in its possibilities, there is hardly business enough to warrant its construction.

A CONSIDERABLE PROPORTION of the tonnage of aluminum used today has at some stage during its manufacture, been rolled. I. For one, therefore, was particularly pleased to hear that this Society was to hold a symposium on rolling of nonferrous metals. Metallurgists can well afford to direct their close attention to the metallurgy involved in this important operation. To one who has seen today's high production rolling mills for aluminum it is difficult to realize that the first aluminum rolling mill For sheet was installed a scant 55 yr ago, in 1892. This mill was a three-stand train of 2-high mills, driven by a steam engine and was operated for many years successfully rolling aluminum sheet. Mills for the rolling of aluminum rod were installed in 1899 to meet the demand For manufacture of electrical conductor wires and cables. Bars and rods in straight lengths were also made. While these mills were the first built for rolling aluminum products of these types some rod had previously been rolled on brass and copper mills. Not until many years later, in 1929, however, Were facilities provided for the rolling of structural shapes, such as I-beams and channels. Growth of the aluminum sheet business and the necessity for economical manufacture soon brought the realization of the economies resulting From-the rolling of sheet in long lengths and coiling it. "Recycling of aluminum scrap and dross is significant in the economic and energy saving, as well as in the environmental protection. Recovery of metal aluminum depends on many factors. The aim of this work is to investigate experimentally the metal recovery under different conditions. The processing of aluminum dross was carried out in DC electric arc rotary furnace. The optimal technological parameters are determined. It is turned out that the presence of crushing refractory bodies during the processing of the aluminum dross in the rotary furnace increases the degree of aluminum recovery with about 10 %.IntroductionCompact and granular aluminum dross are used for the fulfillment of the experiments, which were obtained by salt free melting of aluminum scrap. The only preliminary preparation of the compact dross is crushing them into proper size, in compliance with the size of the opening for furnace charging and removing of fraction – 1 mm. The granular dross is subjected to sieving also with the purpose to remove the fraction – 1 mm. In these conditions the content of the metal phase in the compact dross is 72 %, and in the granular – 77 %. The processing of aluminum dross was carried out in DC electric arc rotary furnace (Figure 1).The purpose of this research is to investigate experimentally the metal recovery under different conditions and to establish the dominant factors, which need to be controlled."

An essential mental equipment for planning exploration is the fullest possible knowledge of the way in which the orebodies occur in the region to be explored, also the realization that in no mining district is this knowledge complete, and that new facts of importance will be revealed to the explorer in every exploration if he is in the proper frame of mind to grasp them. The geology of the ore deposits of the Gogebic Range for a long time was thought to be relatively simple, but work in recent years, by several men, has proved that this is not the case. We now realize that we are far from knowing all the factors that have resulted in the localization of ore deposits. For example, we have long known that the intersections of the dikes and the foot wall were favorable places to look for ore, but only within the last few years have we learned that there are several horizons in the various members, well north of the foot wall, that are likely to carry ore. The influence of the numerous cross faults on orebodies is not known or appreciated beyond a general realization that they are important. Just how they may be favorable or unfavorable to the localization of ore is not known. Such elementary information as the positions of these faults is just beginning to appear on the mine maps. Such being the condition, one can hardly overestimate the importance to the various operators and fee owners of careful studies of conditions in their properties for the purpose of assuring themselves that they are not missing valuable ore—that they are doing all the exploration that their situation demands in order to secure maximum returns. Valuable ores have been missed in the past and will be missed in the future. Only with a complete knowledge of all the factors that have united to produce ore could anything else be expected. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to these facts briefly and to suggest a few of the principles that should guide effective exploration. The foremost principle is that the man who starts out with the idea that he knows all about the mine geology of the Gogebic Range is starting with a heavy handicap.

(written discussiont).-Mr. Tovote's idea of attempting to classify according to their broad geologic relations the ore deposits and prospects of the Southwest is an admirable one. Attempts have been made to evolve some comprehensive scheme of classification that would be of practical assistance in determining the possible value of prospects, but the ore deposits are too varied in type, form, genesis, and distribution to lend themselves readily to any definite, scientific pigeon-holing. The classification Mr. Tovote recommends, combining the age of the mineralization with the type of the rock supposed to be its source, is open to criticism even on the evidence he presents. The age of many deposits is not nor can be definitely determined because of the absence of sedimentary rocks in their vicinity. Furthermore, the character of the mineralizing solutions has, in a large majority of cases, no relation to the composition of the associated igneous rock. While the solutions may have originated in the same magma, they were usually a much later manifestation of it, often appearing after the intrusive rock had completely solidified and been subsequently crushed and fractured, and in many cases the chemical difference is very marked. It is true that igneous activity in the Southwest is definitely related to-certain geologic periods. The statement, however, that no ore deposits can unmistakably be referred to periods earlier than late Cretaceous is not supported by fact. The bonanza copper orebodies of the Jerome District are definitely pre-Cambrian. As suggested by J. R. Finlay,1 they are probably post-Beltian or late Algonkian in age, perhaps related to the same great mountain-making period as the copper deposits in the Keweenawan series of Lake Superior and the Sudbury, Porcupine, and Cobalt deposits of Ontario. The proof that they are pre-Paleozoic may be summarized as follows: 1. The pre-Cambrian complex in which they occur is overlaid by a great thickness of Paleozoic sediments with the Tonto or Tapeats sandstone at their base. The only primary mineralization in these sediments is an economically unimportant one connected with very recent basalt. 2. The flexure of geologic strata, a phenomenon of interest to geologists and mining engineers alike, is examined as a sheet bending problem in Coulomb plasticity. Fonnulae for the distribution of stress, strain, and displacement increments; volume change; change in the length of the central surface; and power of dissipation, as well as for the neutral surface shift are given. Strains of any magnitude are considered. The analysis shows that deeply buried strata may bend and develop "tensile" cracks under generally compressive states of stress. It is also shown that bed separation and high capacity props are desirable in mechanized longwall mining, a result in keeping with operating experience. Although speculative at this time, the analysis provides a rational working hypothesis as regards the problem of strata flexure and control. | he purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the flexure of geologic strata as a problem in the bending of a sheet of material failing in accordance with a Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The flexure of strata has an obvious academic interest to the geologist concerned with the mechanics of folding. It is of interest to the economic geologist as it relates to the structural control of certain types of ore deposits. It has an intimate association with mine subsidence phenomena, and is of concern to the mining engineer. Strata flexure is also the dominant feature of roof behavior about longwall workings. An improved understanding of strata flexure through a rational mechanical analysis thus appears desirable not only from the academic view but from the economic one as well. In the field, the most commonly observed feature of folding, subsidence, and longwall roof behavior is the permanent and therefore inelastic nature of the strata movement. Fig. 1 illustrates the physical disposition of strata in the vicinity of a longwall face. Inasmuch as most rocks (with the possible exception of certain evaporites) do not exhibit significant viscoelastic behavior, at least not over time spans of engineering interest, a plastic analysis is indicated. The analysis is meant to apply to strata whose deformation is dominantly that of bending such as might be expected in the remote roof about a longwall face.

This note calls attention to a contradiction in current eatistical theory and to corresponding difficulties in practice. These are significant concern in evaluating almost all ore deposits. The theoretical contradiction is that the commonly used spherical model for the semivariogram is not consistent with the usual definition of a "regionalized variable" as a mathematical function, the direct study of which "is excluded because its spatial variability is usually extremely erratic, with all kinds of discontinuities. . ." (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978). Specifically, this means a grade function that is too "rough" for interpolation to be useful. The practical difficulty is that the spherical semivariogram interprets the data upon which it is based in a manner that is, more often than not, demonstrably inconsistent with reality. This is attributable to the widely disregarded interaction between the sample pattern and the grade function. Each sample pattern "blurs" the grade function in its own particular way. It is as though the grade structure of the deposit were seen through a lens of poor resolution or reflected in a warped mirror, such as those found in amusement parks. The fitted spherical model embeds this sometimes dangerously blurred and distorted image in the Krige regression. A full analysis of these inconsistencies is to be presented later but, in the meantime, it seems urgent to communicate their effects so that those engaged in estimating ore reserves may be on guard. The spherical semivariogram has a sill and can be replaced by the corresponding covariogram. Construction of the CSO Retention - Treatment Tunnel, Segment 1 in Dearborn, Michigan includes excavation for an overflow Structure with a minimum inside diameter of 15.24 m (finished). The excavation extends downward through overburden soil including a 15.2 m thick zone of potentially weak clay. This paper presents the subsurface data for the clay and a geotechnical analysis thereof, together with predictions of the behavior of the planned 15.54 m inside diameter open end caisson as it is sunk through this potentially weak zone. In a companion paper, the writers will compare the behavior observed with that predicted.

Gold Fields acquired an option to purchase the Cerro Corona project, located in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca Department, Peru, in December 2003. In January 2006, the option was taken up and the transaction closed. During the intervening months, project development occurred against the backdrop of a presidential election, increasing national social activism and environmental regulation, rapidly escalating operating and capital costs, as well as an unprecedented demand for engineering and technical skills. Project “Lessons Learned” are discussed in the context of an evolving strategy. The Cerro Corona project forms part of a porphyry copper-gold deposit situated within the Hualgayoc Mining District in northern Peru. It is located in the highest part of the Western Cordillera of the Andes, close to the headwaters of the Atlantic Continental Basin. It lies approximately 90 km (56 miles) by road north of the Department of Cajamarca’s capital city and near the village of Hualgayoc. Access to the Cerro Corona project from Cajamarca is by two roads, one from Cajamarca to the Yanacocha Mine 45 km (28 miles), and then from Yanacocha to the village of Hualgayoc and the town of Bambamarca 45 km (28 miles).

The influence of precipitation from solid solution on the subsequent deformation resistance of alloys is well known. However, the influence of precipitation or aging that occurs simultaneously with deformation may be entirely different and of considerable importance. It is thought1 that the presence or absence of a yield point jog in impure iron at room temperature and the presence or absence of discontinuous flow at higher temperatures may be directly related to aging phenomena, particularly since the yield point jog is absent when the carbon and nitrogen are sufficiently removed.2 As a preliminary attack on the problem of simultaneous aging and deformation, three kinds of tests—constant strain rate tensile tests, constant load creep tests, and variable strain rate tensile tests—were carried out on an age hardenahle aluminum alloy. Constant Strain Rate Tensile Tests Stress-strain curves at a strain rale of about 0.001 min-1 were obtained for specimens of 61S that had been quenched into liquid nitrogen after a one-hour solution treatment at 521°C, then aged at room temperature 10 min., 20 min., 4 hr, and 26.5 hr before testing. Strain-time curves were obtained on the same chart with the stress-strain curve by means of an auxiliary pen, driven parallel to the axis of the chart drum at constant speed by a synchronous motor and gear chain. The angle of rotation of the chart drum was proportional to strain. The strain rates reported are the measured slopes of the strain time curves. Constant strain rate was approximated (within a factor of 2) by manual adjustment of the oil inlet valve of the hydraulic testing machine in such a way that the course of the recorder pen was parallel to pre-drawn strain-time lines of the desired slope. A 2 1/2 inch diameter probe containing a high resolution gamma ray spectrometer was developed for downhole ore grade assays to depths of 6,000 feet. Tests have been conducted on the characteristics of this tool for in-situ determinations of uranium by means of natural gamma ray counting, and of copper, silver, gold, iron and coal quality by means of neutron-induced gamma rays. Application of the technique for improved carbon-oxygen logging in oil fields is promising. The probe contains a cryogenically cooled high purity germanium detector and a 4,000 channel spectrum analyzer. Gamma ray spectra are digitally transmitted up the cable to the truck-mounted data processing system. We found that uranium can be assayed directly in different types of formations independently of the degree of geochemical disequilibrium by counting the relatively weak 1.001 MeV gamma ray of protactinium-234m. Neutron activation work shows that in-situ determinations of copper, silver, iron and coal quality are technically feasible. In carbon-oxygen oil well logging the technique allows an accurate determination of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, silicon, calcium and iron, and shows promise of providing an improved oil/water differentiator.

Detailed landform designs were completed for six (integrated) iron ore waste rock dumps at a Western Australian iron ore mine site to meet closure objectives and to optimise material movements for closure. The designs were based on specific physical and geochemical properties of waste material and the design was undertaken to enhance long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements, and therefore minimise closure cost. Construction of the re-shaped waste rock dumps have been completed. Following construction, surface material characteristics were found to deviate from those used in the design assessment. Materials present at surface following re-shaping were generally finer textured than those sampled for modelling. It is anticipated that the embankment slopes may experience increased rates of surface erosion compared to the rates predicted from modelling and used in design. The finer textured material is thought to be generated from exposing finer material that has migrated into the coarser matrix over time or that was not present in the sampled top surface of the landforms. This is due to armouring processes over time and this phenomenon is likely to recur following further wet seasons. The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps were subgrade banded iron formations (BIF) and chert, which are generally competent and geochemically inert. Some waste material was known to have an elevated risk of erosion but present in relatively small quantities. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert). Abstract: In recent years, probabilistic approach with the calculation of probability of failure instead of a factor of safety against failure is emerging in practice. The main objective of the paper is to discuss a probabilistic approach in rock slope stability analysis for Himalayan conditions. Due to the fragile geology brought about by the tectonic movements along the hill slopes, dramatic variations of the topography and intensive surface runoff during every monsoon season, serious slope failures occur frequently in Himalayan region. Slope failures have also been triggered by seismic activities. The probabilistic approach is applied to stability analysis for a road cut along the Desander back slope of the Kali Gandaki hydropower project in Nepal. It is concluded that the probability approach offers a more accurate grasp of the actual condition than any factor of safety. Zusammenfassung: In den letzten Jahren ist es mehr gewöhnlich geworden, ein stochastisches Verfahren und eine Berechnung von der Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Zusammenbruchs statt einer Berechnung von Sicherheitsfaktoren zu verwenden. Das Hauptziel dieses Artikels ist das stochastische Verfahren in Stabilitätsanalyse von Gebirghängen, welches an Himalayische Verhältnisse angewandt worden ist, zu diskutieren. Wegen der spröden Geologie die durch tektonische Bewegungen entstanden ist und den dramatischen topographischen Variationen sowie viel Oberflächenwasser während des Monsuns, kommen in der Region des Himalayas oft mehrere erhebliche Abhangszusammenbrüche vor. Abhangszusammenbruche ist auch von seismische Aktivität ausgelöst worden. Das stochastisches Verfahren ist auch benutzt worden, um die Stabilität von einem Wegschnitt in dem Desander Gebiet von dem Kali Gandaki Wasserwerk-Projekt zu analysieren. Die schlussfolgerung ist, dass die Ergebnisse eines stochastisches Verfahren die wirkliche Verhältnisse eines Abhangs besser beschreibt als der Sicherheitsfaktor. Résumé:- Ces dernières années, une approche probabiliste basée sur le calcul d’une probabilité de cassure au lieu d’un facteur de sécurité préventif d’une cassure est de plus en plus utilisée. L’objectif principal de ce papier est de discuter une approche probabiliste de la stabilité de versants rocheux en himalaya. Due à la fragile géologie causée par les mouvements tectoniques sur les versants de collines, aux dramatiques variations de topographie, ainsi qu’au lessivage intense du relief à chaque mousson, de sérieux glissements de terrains se produisent fréquemment en Himalaya. Les glissements de terrain sont aussi déclenchés par l’activité sismique. Cette approche probabiliste est appliquée aux analyses de stabilité d’une section de route le long du versant arrière Desander du projet « hydropower » du Kali Gandaki au Népal. On en conclut que l’approche probabiliste offre une estimation plus précise des conditions actuelles que n’importe quel facteur de sécurité.

"Thiosulfate is one of the most promising non-cyanide lixiviants for gold leaching. However, the undesirable reaction between thiosulfate and copper (II) gives rise to increased reagent consumption, which results in high cost and huge limit to its development. This paper presents study on the effect of ammonia, copper (II) and Cu(NH3)l+ ions on the oxidative decomposition of thioulfate. It shows that the presence of copper (II) and Cu(NH3)l+ can significantly increase the thiosulfate oxidation, while ammonia is relatively unaffected. The oxidation of thiosulfate by copper(II) in the absence of ammonia is fast at first and then decreases as time increased within a certain time, which can postulate that an intermediate product is responsible for the decreased consumption. The effect of ammonia is depended on the interaction with copper (II), which was found to significantly affect the consumption of thiosulfate.IntroductionFor over one century cyanidation is widely used in industrial production of gold, due to its simplity of process and low cost of production. However, cyanide is a highly toxic chemical reagent used dangerously and brings serious environmental pollution. What's more, cyanidation has slow speed of leaching gold and poorly leaching effective for refractory ores. With the exhausting of free-milling gold ores and promoted environmental protection requests, the disadvantage of cyanidation becomes a growing problem. In recent years, more and more research activities have been focused on alternative processes using non-cyanide lixiviants. Among the non-cyanide lixiviants, thiosulfate is considered as the most promising one[l-5].Compared to cyanide, thiosulfate is an inexpensive, nontoxic and less-pollution reagent, which can form complexes with many metal ions. Thiosulfate leaching of gold has an acceptable leaching rate and is insensitivity to impurities. Moreover it presents advantage on the treatment of refractory gold ores such as carbonaceous gold ores, copper gold ores, complex arsenic and sulfur gold ores, and so on[6]."

The laws of detonation wave velocity variation in propagation process along the charge under channel influence are investigated widely in this paper. The result is obtained by blasting experiments. Bore hole is simulated by plastic tube or steel pipe (with outer diameter 45 nun, inner diameter 40 or 41 mm). Blasting experiment is carried out with a cylindrical charge of 32 mm diameter. The author analyses the characteristics of energy distribution along the charge under above-mentioned conditions. Reasonable initiating position and initiating direction are also analysed. A double-direction initiating method which consists of several initiating charges is put forward. The blasting effect of this initiating method when used in underground mining is stated out.

The discussion by Tammann and Botschwar of the transition from eutectie grouth to denrdritic plus eu-tectic growth is reviewed and applied to metallic eutectic systems. Using expevimental data on the geowth rate of the Pb-Sn eutectic, and an extrapolalion of dendritic growth rate in tin and Sn-Pb alloys , qlcantitatice prerlictiotls of the extent of the eutectic region in tin-vich Sn-Pb alloys are made. There are no experimenta1 measuvements available for detailed comparison with these predictions. EUTECTIC structures form over a small range of compositions. The theory of lamellar growth presented by Jackson and Hunt' indicates that it is in principle possible to have eutectic growth over almost the complete range of compositions between the two solidus lines. This does not occur in practice. Alloys far from the eutectic composition grow dendritically followed by a eutectic as shown in Fig. I. The transition from a eutectic to a dendritic plus eutectic interface cannot be predicted from constitutional undercooling arguments because constitutional undercooling always exists ahead of the eutectic interface.' Reasonable predictions can, however, be made using arguments originally put forward by Tammanl. and Botschwar.3 These and later workers'"*6 carried out extensive experimental investigations of the extent of the eutectic range in organic materials. They concluded that the structure formed, eutectic or dendrites plus eutectic, depended on which structure grew faster at the given undercooling. This is, of course, equivalent to the structure which grows with the smallest undercooling at a given growth rate. In this paper, we will discuss these ideas briefly and then apply them to predict quantitatively the range of eutectic growth in tin-rich Pb-Sn alloys. The temperature dependence of the growth rates of dendrites and eutectic for a typical metal alloy of eutectic composition is shown schematically in Fig. 2(a). The growth rate for the eutectic increases more rapidly with undercooling than those of the dendrites because of the short diffusion path maintained in the eutectic, see Fig. 1. For an alloy off the eutectic composition on the A-rich side, the growth rates shift as shown in Fig. 2(b). The liquidus temperature of the a phase increases, that of the 3 phase decreases, and the temperature of zero growth rate for the eutectic does not change. The curves, particularly the dendritic ones, change shape as well, but for our purposes the principal effects occur because of the change in liquidus temperatures.3-6 In an isothermal system, only a dendrites will grow above TE, Fig. 2(b).
