The solute-transport model OTIS and the reactive solute-transport model OTEQ were used to simulate geochemical conditions in Cement Creek, a tributary to the Anirnas River in Colorado. OTIS was used to depict instream zinc concentrations, and to simulate the effects of two remediation scenarios on zinc concentrations at the mouth of Cement Creek. These simulations do not account for effects of changing stream pH on metal concentrations. Preliminary simulations using OTEQ to account for instream pH changes were unsuccessful due to the spatial nature of mixing processes, and insufficient information about the thermodynamic properties of precipitates forming in mixing zones.

Over the past 20 years, diesel-powered equipment has been introduced into the underground mining environment in increasing numbers. While the introduction began years earlier in the metal-nonmetal sector, the exponential growth in coal mining use during this time has been more pronounced. Reasons for the continued use and rapid growth of diesel equipment in underground mines are easily understood. The safety and operational advantages afforded by this equipment in production and support systems are demonstrable. As other mine operators witness the advantages enjoyed by their competitors, they too move to introduce an increasingly diverse array of such equipment into their underground mines. As with any industrial technology, the use of diesel-powered equipment entails potential safety and health concerns. Existing Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)approval regulations (30 CFR Parts 31, 32 and 36) apply only to diesel locomotives and mobile diesel-powered equipment for noncoal mines. In the absence of specific regulations, MSHA has required the use of equipment approved under Part 36 (gassy noncoal mines) for areas of underground coal mines where permissible electrical equipment is required. However, a considerable amount of diesel-powered equipment without explosion-proof or fire prevention features is in use in areas of coal mines where permissible electrical equipment is not required. It is on the use of this latter class of equipment that MSHA is focusing much of its regulatory attention relative to coal. The agency also is focused on revising existing occupational exposure limits for gaseous emissions and instituting limits on diesel particulate emissions for both coal and metal-nonmetal mines.

Vertical and horizontal movements beyond the perimeter of the open pit have resulted from the development of deep and extensive open pits; the surface point always moves towards the centre of the open pit. The surface movements are not only great in relation to the stability of the open pit slope and the safety of mining operations but also are of significance to the stability of structures and ser- vices on the surface beyond the perimeter of the open pit. Recently, some studies on factors contributing to the surface movements have been carried out. Particular attention has been paid to prediction of vertical and horizontal movements, differential subsidence and horizontal strain and careful assessment of their influences on existing structures in the adjacent area. In the application of the theory of stochastic medium, it is assumed that ground subsidence process has the property of Markov Process. Based on the superposit ion principle, surface movements due to open pit mining are derived from the Kolmogorov Equation, and calculated in a digital computer. Quantitative calculation of surface movements is made according to the method employed in this paper and compared with the results of measurement in Morwell Open Pit, Victoria, Australia and Baiyin Open Pit, Gansu, China. The method of calculation gives reasonably satisfactory results.

THE airborne geophysicist is a busy man these days. In his plane he may have the airborne magnetometer, the airborne scintillation counter, and the airborne electromagnetic surveying system. Each of these is an independent tool, but all require additional auxiliary equipment for locating the aircraft in space: recording altimeters and Shoran or aerial cameras. Now there is still another piece of equipment, the airborne magnetic gradiometer, an accessory to the magnetometer. To understand its uses, consider the function of the magnetometer itself. Aside from detecting magnetic ore, the airborne magnetometer finds greatest use in spotting intrusions of igneous material. Where there is enough contrast in magnetic susceptibility of igneous rock and adjacent formations, it outlines the intrusion. Certain minerals also influence the magnetometer directly, but with the exception of magnetite and possibly one or two others, their effect is weak and can be detected only when there is sufficient ore and the magnetometer flight passes very close to it. An igneous intrusion of infinite depth with vertical sides is represented on a magnetometer record by an anomaly, as in Fig. 1. Amplitude of the high depends on susceptibility contrast of the igneous rock. Generally speaking, the edge of the intrusion lies below the point of inflection of the curve, and this point, where the curvature changes from positive to negative on the magnetometer profile, would be near A in Fig. 1, with a counterpart, of course, on the other side. Location of the contact is one of the principal objects of the survey, but finding the precise point is not always easy, as inspection of the curve near A will show. Mineralization is often found at the contact zones, as at B. Magnetic effects, if detected, may be small, as in B', and when superimposed on the anomaly due to the instrusion they are very difficult to discern and analyze. Furthermore, if these small fluctuations are to be perceived by the magnetometer the vertical scale should be large. This increases the slopes of the anomaly and makes detection of small deviations and inflection points even more difficult. The airborne magnetic gradiometer was designed to help overcome these difficulties. What it presents is the first derivative of the magnetometer record with respect to time, that is to say, the slope at any point. Fig. 2 represents an actual magnetometer record (solid line) with the corresponding gradiometer record (dashed line) superimposed. Both records read from right to left. Vertical lines on the original magnetometer record are automatic steps designed to keep the pen from going off scale. The slope of any curve is greatest at the point of inflection or point where the curvature changes sign, and this point is a maximum (or minimum) on the gradi- ometer. The chief advantage of the gradiometer is that maxima or minima are much easier to see and to locate precisely; hence an accurate location for the point of inflection can easily be found. Note that points C and D are more sharply defined than C and D'. Similarly the small fluctuations of the original record, so important to the interpreter, are far more clearly shown at E, F, and G, than on the original record at E', F', and G'. Though not necessarily highs and lows on the gradiometer, they do show up clearly what would take a painstaking analysis to detect on the original magnetometer record. Will the gradiometer have a particular configuration which indicates an orebody? Not necessarily. The total intensity curve, or original magnetometer record, can display an orebody in various ways, depending on dimensions, orientation, latitude, and composition, as well as on direction, flight height, and instrumental sensitivity of the traverse. Where the total intensity can take on so many different shapes the gradiometer must vary too. It is generally recognized that interpretation of total intensity magnetometer records requires an expert analysis; the gradiometer can be of considerable assistance to the expert but it does not replace him. Mechanism of the gradiometer is simple. A Leeds & Northrup recorder in the aircraft records the magnetic gradient simultaneously with the total intensity, which is on another recorder. Fiducial marks are put on both records simultaneously and the speed of the paper through the recorders is kept the same on both. This makes it possible to place one record over the other for direct comparison. In the laboratory the flights are positioned on a map. Maximum and minimum points on the gradiometer, which can then be posted on the map at their proper locations, may be expected to fall along a trend crossing the direction of flight. Trends should indicate the edge of an intrusion, or some other important features, and when superimposed on the total intensity contour map help greatly to locate the points of inflection, or line of zero curvature.

The practice of leaving barrier pillars between adjacent longwall panels at The Durban Navigation Collieries (Pty) Ltd (Dumacol) has resulted in a considerable loss of coal reserves. Dumacol has now modified the layout of its longwall panels to allow the concurrent mining of barri9f pillars and the extraction of the longwalls. The Implementation of the new panel layout has increased the percentage extraction of reserves and will result in an extension in the life of the mine. The method of extracting barrier pillars between adjacent longwall panels is described in this paper.

"Canadian experience in industrial modeling of grinding, classification, and flotation kinetics was applied at the Sarcheshmeh copper mine, which processes 40,000 t/d of ore at 0.9 % Cu, in an effort to improve capacity and metallurgical performance. Mcivor's functional performance analysis was applied to ball mill cyclone circuits to maximize circuit capacity. Plitt's cyclone model was applied to predict how apex wear would affect classification performance, as part of a predictive maintenance program whereby the optimum wear period is determined for cast iron apexes. The flotation flowsheet was improved using Agar's optimization criteria. The impact of these technologies has been nothing short of spectacular, with an improved capacity of 1 S to 20""/o, and increased recoveries.1-IntroductionThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body, which may rank as third or fourth largest in the world, contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.90 % copper and 0.03 % molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and has been processing 40,000 t/d of ore since 1982. The mine produces 100,000 tonnes of copper and 2,200 tonnes of molybdenum concentrate per year. After three stages of crushing, the ore with a Fso of 12. 7 mm is fed to 8 parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70""/o finer than 7 S microns. The concentrate of the first stage of flotation is reground and the tailings constitute the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31 % Cu is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83 and 87 % depending on the operating conditions and ore type.To improve the overall performance of the plant, it was first decided to evaluate the performance of grinding, classification and flotation. Measures were then taken to improve performance using the following criteria: (i) The improvements should be of the types that have resulted in significant improvements in other plants (e.g. Shannon et al, 1993); and (ii) The proposed improvements must be achievable with the manual operation presently used at Sarcheshmeh. The outcome of this study could also help in making decisions on the implementation of automatic control systems in the Sarcheshmeh copper mine."

Recent epithermal gold discoveries in Chile and Bolivia provide increasing evidence of a belt of intermittent, epithermal, precious metal mineralization east of the main Andean porphyry copper belt. This relationship may be the result of an easterly decrease in the age of magmatism and erosional levels, in¬crease in depth above the underlying Benioff zone and consequent changes in magma chemistry, or some other unrecognized factor. Examples are: • The Choquelimpie gold-silver mine in Chile and numerous other epithermal prospects (such as La Riviera, Bolivia) in late Tertiary volcanics along the Chile-Bolivia border. These lie east of the belt that contains the Toquepala, Quellaveco and Cuajone porphyries in southern Peru and the Cerro Colorado, Copaquire and Quebrada Blanca porphyries in northern rhila

In this study, the development of a new method for investigating the diffusion of metal cations in multi-component slag systems, using microprobe analysis is discussed. This method allows the analysis of the diffusion of multiple species within a single system. This project has focused on the diffusion characteristics of manganese, iron, calcium and silicon in silicate slags, in order to simulate industrial steel and ferromanganese production. The diffusion behaviour of transition metals is of particular interest because of the effects of their variable valence. This study identified the variation in diffusivity of slag components with changes in composition and temperature of multi-component slag systems. The molecular structure of the experimental calcium-aluminosilicate slags was investigated to determine the chemical and physical properties that influence diffusion behaviour. This experimental data was used to develop predictive models for diffusivity. These models enable the estimation of the diffusivity of many slag components in complex slags, over a range of compositions.

THE earliest accounts we have of Japan represent the country as having great mineral wealth, especially of precious and useful metals. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, in the thirteenth century, writes of "Zipangu:” "They have gold in greatest abundance, its sources being inexhaustible. The king does not allow of its being exported. To this circumstance we are to attribute the extraordinary richness of the sovereign's palace. The entire roof is covered with a plating of gold. . . . The ceilings of the halls are of the same precious metal ; many of the apartments have tables of pure gold of considerable thickness, and the windows also have golden ornaments." Marco Polo also gives an account of an unsuccessful Tartar expedition against Japan, prompted by the supposed great wealth of the country. Columbus also, as well as many other explorers, were attracted and encouraged by these prevalent reports of the wealth of the islands of Zipangu. Kaempfer, writing in 1727, speaks of the great mineral wealth of Japan, and especially of the abundance of gold, which, he says, is found in many provinces. The Portuguese and Dutch, while they had trading-posts in Japan, furnished tangible evidence of the truth of the early reports. Between 1550 and 1639 the Portuguese merchants sent home from Japan nearly three hundred million dollars' worth of bullion, most of which was gold. As the relative value of equal weights of gold and silver was then six to one, while in Europe, at the same time, it was nearly twelve to one, the exchange of silver bullion for gold was by no means an unimportant part of their business. After the Portuguese, the Dutch continued the exportation of bullion, and the exchange of silver for gold, though with less profit, as the relative value of gold increased with the demand. Between 1649 and 1671 the Dutch traders sent home over two hundred million dollars in bullion, of which, however, nearly two-thirds was silver. In 1671 the Japanese government, alarmed at the rapid rate at which the precious metals were leaving the country, issued an edict forbidding the exportation of gold or silver, under heavy penalties, which had the immediate effect of stopping this trade. Sharp declines of initial production of both oil and gas occurred in West Virginia during 1943. There was only a small decrease in the number of ncw wells, but these wells did not show the quantities of oil and gas that might have been expected. The same situation prevailed both as to routine drilling in old pools and as to exploratory wildcat wells. Out of 42 wildcats drilled, 19 resulted in small commercial gas wells, and 2 in small commercial oil. No new oil pools were discovered, but the proved limits of several old pools were considerably extended, giving 4200 acres of newly proved oil territory. Three new gas pools, resulting from discoveries made in 1942 and former years, came into definite activity. The newly proved gas territory in these and in various extensions of old pools is 39,000 acres or more. It is doubtful whether the newly proved reserves of either oil or gas will balance current withdrawals. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 696 new wells were drilled, resulting in 82 oil wells with 919 bbl. of daily new production; 475 gas wells with 454,735,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 137 dry holes. Also, 57 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 3 bbl. and 11,484,000 cu. it. of added production. On the new wells, the oil average was 11.2 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 957,337 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.68 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 14.03 per cent. The greatly decreased average initial gas-well production in 1943, as compared with 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well in 1942, is directly attributable to the abrupt decline of completions in the Charleston gas field, which reached its peak in 1942. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the U. S. Rureau of Mines as 3,349,000 bbl., as compared with 3,574,000 bbl. in 1942. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 210,000, 000,000 cu. ft., compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 215,193,-000,000 cu. ft.* in 1942.

A new methodology of an experimental-analytical approach has been developed. It is used in building an information geomechanic monitoring system for the modeling of geomechanic processes during coal seam working. The approach synthesizes experimental (in-situ) measurements of rock pressure manifestation in separate points, methods of numerical modeling of processes on rock boundaries with coal, and a seam analytical calculation of rock mass in a spatial strained state. One of the realizations of this approach is the developed theory and calculation method of adjoining rock surface shift (overhang) formation during underground working of sheet deposits and of rock mass geomechanic state determination. There are description algorithms of cavity configurations with broken lengths of faces during underground working of useful mineral sheet deposits. These algorithms have been used in computer modeling of formations of adjoining rock surface overhangs and abutment pressure upon rock mass in the area of coal faces with irrectilinear longwalls. Peculiarities of surfaces shifts and stress allocation are established for different face schemes. The use of theory and methods alloww working out techniques of automatic control to receive processing algorithms of RPM measurement results and calculate geomechanic situations within panels in the process of planning and development as well as during mining, i.e., to carry out long-term prediction, in-line control, and short-term prediction of rock pressure manifestations.

Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards. First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change In coal seam inclination. Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in. diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, production to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. The principal geological and mineralogical characteristics of Chilean porphyry copper deposits are described. Elevated contents of fine grained ore and gangue material may cause copper losses and pose problems or render useless the flotation process. Examples of chalcopyrite and bornite size distributions are given. The state of the art of mineralogical and mineral chemical characterization in Chile is evaluated permitting analyses to lm and nm level by lacking the regular use of direct surface analysis.

A ‘Variable Blend and Rates’ model is developed for SAG mills which extends upon the JKSimMet® Variable Rates Model. Similarly, a ‘Variable Blend Residence Constrained Perfect Mixing’ Ball Mill model is also introduced, also extending upon the existing JKSimMet® model. These models are used in conjunction with JKSimMet® while employing external technical programs. The technical model is then used to inform an economic model described elsewhere in Hanhiniemi and Powell (2022), which calculate operating and unit costs based on operating conditions, design, and ore characterisation. The SAG and ball mill models include constraints beyond those in the JKSimMet® models. The SAG model constraints include Size Specific Energy (SSE) verification, charge weight limit, and assessment of the impact of media to ore composition in the charge using the SAG Charge SSE Model developed in this paper. The ball mill model includes residence time, volumetric capacity, and SSE verification constraints. These models are applied to Cortez Gold Mine in the processing of two very different ore types and their blends; ‘Horse Canyon’ which is softer in coarser sizes and competent is fine sizes, and ‘Wenban’ which is competent at coarser sizes but softer in fine sizes than Horse Canyon. Horse Canyon also has a finer run-of-mine size distribution then Wenban. The application of the model at this site included undertaking five surveys at varying blends. The behaviours of the blends and individual components is then studied in the SABC circuit. A nonlinearity is observed with throughputs increasing with blending. The newly developed modelling approach captures these responses. Controlled blending based on ore competence-by-size and size distribution was implemented by the site, which then realised significant improvements in throughput without any capital cost (Ntiamoah et al, 2020). The modelling developed in this paper is then compared to existing practice, and the new method was found to provide improved fidelity and utility. A three-dimensional surface is then developed using the model describing the SAG mill throughput capacity at varying conditions (speed-filling) versus varying blend. The change in throughput as a function of only the changing charge composition is presented. The result is nonlinear, and explanations are provided to describe this behaviour.

The paper commences with an overview of the industrial minerals markets, with particular reference to the characteristics that impact on the development of a successful marketing strategy. This is followed by the identification of the steps to be taken in the negotiation and execution of an industrial minerals sales contract, from identification of the appropriate product through negotiation of the contract to ongoing customer relations. An understanding of your customerÆs business is fundamental to a mutually successful long-term relationship with that customer. The paper concludes with an overview of the techniques and approaches through which such a relationship may be achieved and maintained.

PISCES - the Planning and Information System for Coal Export Services has been developed by Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) to ensure the efficient and economic operation of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain. PISCES is a computer based integrated information and management system to coordinate operations commencing at minesites through the coal chain to shiploading at the Port. The PISCES system comprises a central database around which a number of planning modules interact. These include interactive programs for train planning and timetabling, stockpile management, berthing analysis and a coal shippers enquiry system. PWCS has previously developed - number of computer based systems for planning, controlling and monitoring complex coal handling operations and the extension of the PISCES system to the Hunter Valley Coal Chain is another initiative to assist the Hunter Valley Coal Export Industry in looking confidently towards the Future.

The tragedy of the Moura No. 2 incident has lost much of its emotional mileage for those organisations that thrive on loss and suffering. However, for the families, workers, mine owners and operators in the Queensland underground coalfields, the challenge of delivering a positive outcome, though well underway, is in its infancy. The pressure created by interested parties is necessary for overcoming the inertia involved in change; but they cannot deliver the change. The responsibility ultimately resides at each individual minesite with the people who work there each day.
