Whereas traditionally, stable isotope research has been directed towards resource exploration and development, it is finding more frequentapplications in helping to assess the impacts of resource utilization upon ecosystems. Among the many pursuits, two themes are evident:(1) tracing the transport and conversions of pollutants in the environment and(2) better understanding of the interplay among environmental receptors, e.g. food web studies. Stable isotope data are used primarily to identify the presence of pollutants in the environment and with a few exceptions, the consequence of their presence must be assessed by other techniques. Increasing attention has been given to the isotopic composition of humans with many potential applications in areas such as paleodiets, medicine, and criminology. In this brief overview examples are used from the Pacific Rim to illustrate the above concepts. Stable isotope data will undoubtedly play an increasing role in multi-disciplinary research in the Pacific Rim. However, consideration should be given to more effective strategies, e.g. networking, for pursuing large scale problems such as long range circulation of pollutants.

Posteriormente, existe una competencia por desarrollar equipos mecánicos de mayor capacidad y operación, como un interés por el advenimiento de nuevas tecnologías y uso de la investigación. H. McD. Lorain says in regard to his son, Captain S. H. Lorain; "It might be of interest to you to know that, although but 23 years of age, my son is captain of Co. C 107th U. S. Engineers, Thirty-second Division. He landed in France about the middle of February, 1918, and was commissioned a captain on Sept. 5, 1918. He started for the front the latter part of June and was there continuously until the armi-stice was signed, on Nov. 11, being on the front lines in the Argonne at that time. He is, at present, in Coblenz, Germany, with the Army of Occupation. Although much of his work was clone under artillery and machine-blur fire, as well as airplane bombs and fire, he escaped without a scratch. Once, he was the only one of a group who escaped without a scratch from an exploding shell." Lieut. Bernard H. Lasky, on a post card received a short time ago, gave the following brief record of his military career. "I have been serving with the 316th Engineers in France and in Flanders and had the satisfaction of being in the last big drive in Belgium which sent the enemy beyond Avaenarde and did much to increase their gait on their way to Brussels. On Oct. 1, I received a commission as second lieutenant and was assigned to Co. C of the 316th Engineers."

"The behaviour of minerals in the Mount Wright spiral circuit was investigated to find methods of improving iron oxide mineral liberation and recovery. The feeds, concentrates and tailings from rougher, cleaner and recleaner spirals in one mill line were sampled before and after the sizing screen openings were reduced from 2 mm to 1.6 mm. Sized fractions of each sample were analyzed with the MP-SEM-IPS image analysis system at CANMET to determine mineral quantities and liberation characteristics of the iron oxide minerals. Mass balance techniques were used to calculate stream recoveries of iron, silica, total iron oxide minerals, hema¬tite, goethite, quartz, ferromagnesian silicates, and liberated and locked total iron oxide minerals for each sieve fraction.The reduction of the sizing screen openings increased the ap¬parent liberation of the total iron oxide minerals in the screen undersize from 89% to 94% and raised the over-all iron recovery from 84.4% to 85.3%. Apparent liberation of iron oxide minerals in the cleaner sand also increased from 70% to 85%, but the – 75 µm fraction re¬mained the only fraction containing an acceptable amount of liber¬ated iron oxide minerals in each case. Due to limitations of spiral and grinding efficiency it is recommended that the cleaner sand be screened at 300 m, the +300 m fraction be reground, and the – 300 p.m fraction be rerouted to the rougher spirals.The amount of fine liberated iron oxide minerals (– 106 m) lost in the tailings was 46 TPH in mill line 3. This value represents 41 wt % of the free fine iron oxide minerals, or 7 wt % of the total iron oxide minerals in the spiral feed. Further work is needed to investigate the possibility of recovering this material by other methods.Middling iron particles (010 50%) and presumably free gangue in the size range –300+ 75 m tend to be recovered by spirals by entrapment."

The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national Priorities.

Macroscopic and microscopic studies of the outburst-prone Gemini Coal (Bowen Basin) showed that outbursts were associated with a localized inertinite-rich ply. Previous studies of the Gemini Coal had shown a general relationship between desorption rate, regarded as a good measure of outburst proneness, and inertinite content of coal samples.Desorption rates increased with increasing inertinite content and were highest for inertodetrinite-rich samples. These results suggest that inertinite content and composition play a significant role in outbursting and may be useful in identifying outburst-prone coals, which could be confirmed by desorption measurements.Consequently outburst-prone areas in the Upper Permian coal measures ofthe Sydney, Gunnedah and Bowen Basins have been defined using a combination ofthe parameters, inertinite content, depth ofcover and coal rank. In the Upper Permian, inertinite-rich coals are confined mainly to the top of the coal measures, except in the Sydney and Gunnedah Basins where an inertinite-rich interval (Bayswater Coal and correlatives) is also present towards the base of these measures. Only a small area ofthe central Sydney Basin, butmuch ofthe north-eastern and north-central part of the exposed Bowen Basin is considered outburst prone on the basis of these parameters.The most outburst-prone inertodetrinite-rich lithologies have a patchy and unpredictable distribution in the top of the Upper Permian coal measures. They can be defined only by sampling and petrographic analysis at the subsection level.

IN 1942 Grossmann1 proposed that the hardenability of a steel may be calculated from its chemical composition by considering the base hardenability associated with its carbon content and grain size and multiplying this base by factors for each element present. Since Grossmann's original publication, several investigators2-5 have reexamined the multiplying factors for the individual elements and in general have found that the multiplying principle is valid. However, some of the individual factor curves developed have been in poor agreement. Inasmuch as the carbon-factor curve obtained by Grossmann was dependent [ ] upon the factors for all the other alloying elements present in the steel, it logically followed that his results were in need of correction in the light of the new data available for manganese, silicon, and the other alloying elements. Furthermore, in order to avoid the possibility that errors in the manganese, silicon, or other curves might influence the carbon-factor curve, investigation of iron-carbon alloys containing little or no manganese and silicon was necessary. That the effect of carbon on hardenability was greater than indicated by Grossmann is shown by a comparison of the diameters of completely hardened rounds of iron-carbon alloys with the ideal critical diameter calculated from Grossmann's factors. These alloys have a greater hardenability in a hite quench than predicted by Grossmann's factors for an infinite quench (Table I). [ ] Among the other important variables that were in need of further investigation were the effect of deoxidation practice on the grain-size correction curves and the effect of stable carbide-forming elements on the depth of hardening. Most of the work by Kramer, Hafner, and Toleman4 was done on silicon-killed steels. It was not known whether Grossmann's grain-size correction curves, deter- mined on aluminum-killed steels, was valid when applied to steels with different deoxidation practice. More data on the

IN a report upon the geology of Leadville and vicinity, which is still in the hands of the Public Printer, I have given, at some length, my conclusions as to the genesis of the remarkable silver-lead deposits of that region, and the data, gathered during a long and careful consideration, upon which my views were founded. In the brief abstract of this report, published in 1881, the bare conclusions are given, with but few of the facts upon which they were founded. Since that time, these conclusions have been variously criticised, and it has even been assumed that the views I expressed with regard to these deposits were intended as a theory of ore-deposits in general. Had my final report been printed, no such misconception could have occurred; for, in that I explicitly disclaim any intention of general application of the theories there presented. Even in the abstract I am unable to find any statements which would. justify such a conclusion. Since my Leadville work, however, I have had further opportunities of examining ore-deposits, and have given the general subject much thought and study, and, as a result, I have made in my own mind certain generalizations, which, I am conscious, need the test of a far greater number of practical applications than I have yet been able to make, but which, I think, it may be well to present to the members of the Institute as suggestive, that their own observations may further prove or disprove them. I shall use my Leadville observations and the criticisms which have been made upon them as a sort of text for my remarks. A CONSIDERABLE number of experiments in recent years have definitely established the fact that the internal friction or mechanical hysteresis of a metal under cyclic stress is a property that is highly "structure sensitive." Because of this fact, it has been suggested that an observation of this property, which often is referred to as "damping. capacity," might be a useful indicator of structural. changes taking place when a metal or alloy is subjected to any of a number of metallurgical treatments. Damping capacity is of interest to both engineer and metallurgist, but from a rather different point of view, and the information that each desires from such observations is of a different nature. The metallurgist is in search of various external indications of changes taking place in the interior of a metal; changes which are in themselves not directly observable. Even if the observed phenomenon cannot be explained in fundamental terms, it may be empirically related to certain characteristics of the material and prove of real value in research. Internal friction os mechanical hysteresis occupies such a position, and, although it is nor well understood in terms of basic metallic theory, an observation of itt changes can serve in a very useful capacity. Of course, there is nothing new in the measurement of damping, but the use of this property in metallurgical research constitutes a vast field, which has received all too little attention: The present work is essentially of an exploratory nature in this field and is an attempt to evaluate the process as a research tool. The phenomenon of age-hardening was chosen as a typical example of a structural change and one method of measuring damping was examined in considerable detail.

Wastewater sludge is a problem for environmental control and it is necessary alternative researches for its reuse. Industries can research the association of clay and sewage sludge as a source of ceramic mass. This procedure can contribute for the industry sustainability including in its raw materials, wastes of environmental concern. This paper presents the results of sewage sludge and clays characterization being analyzed particle size distribution (sedimentation), mineralogical (X-ray diffraction), chemical composition (X-ray fluorescence), thermal analysis, density, and Atterberg proprieties (liquid and plastic limit; plasticity index) and also their applications in ceramics. Results were used to determine moisture for mass of raw material and sewage sludge and there were realized tests of fired in kiln at temperatures used in ceramic industry for bricks production. In the test pieces were analyzed the properties for application as bricks.

The throughput and energy efficiency of comminution circuits is reduced when ore characteristics change, causing bottlenecks in some portions of the circuit while leaving excess capacity in others. The results of analysis of three years of daily grinding circuit operating data for a full-scale plant has shown that the location of bottle-necks in the circuit will change depending on the nature of the feed ore. The circuit tends to be limited by the primary mill capacity when the ore hardness increases, and limited by the secondary mill capacity with softer ores. Two methods are considered for shifting load in the circuit to relieve bottlenecks by taking advantage of excess capacity in other parts of the circuit: 1) Addition of supplemental comminution operations, such as high-pressure grinding rolls, to process specific size fractions that are not handled efficiently by the primary mill; and 2) Use of screens to shift grinding load upstream from the secondary mills back to the primary mills. In the case of the plant examined in this study, it was found that 58% of the time there was sufficient excess capacity in the primary mills that the throughput of the circuit could have been increased by using screens to shift the grinding load from the secondary mills to the primary mills.

Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

AT first sight this subject seems to belong to pure theoretical geology, but examination will soon show that it has important practical and economic interest to the mining engineer. The conclusion that all the northern portions of our country, as well as of the eastern continent, have, in the later periods of geological history, been covered with a thick bed of ice, is now accepted by geologists. This bed of ice, except in its greater magnitude, was like the modern glaciers of the Alps, and other mountains which extend above the line of perpetual snow. The marks it has left upon the surface show that it was comparatively thin on its southern. edge, but that its thick¬ness was much greater a little further north, and that it was several thousand feet thick at its heaviest parts. This variation of its surface would give it a descending slope towards the south, and cause the mass of ice, like a semifluid substance, to move in that direction.

Recently equations have been presented by Rose and Bruce' and by Rose², showing how the relative permeability of a reservoir rock may be determined from the capillary character of the rock. In particular, equations were developed to show the relationship between capillary pressure and the effective permeability to the wetting phase in a poly-phase flow system. The equations are as follows (nomenclature the same as in the Rose and Bruce paper) Rose and Bruce assume that the average length of path (L,), which the wetting fluid follows in flowing through a porous media is independent of the saturation to the wetting phase, so that 1 is a constant dependent only on the k rock, and the permeability to the wetting phase is a function of the saturation and of the capillnry pressure: In measuring the flow of ekctric current through partially saturated core samples, it has been observed that the electrical resistance usually is not a simple linear function of saturation. This fact indicates that the average length of path in the flow of electric current is not independent of saturation, but rather that the tortuosity of the path depends upon the average saturation to the conducting fluid as well as upon the characteristics of the rock. itself. Inasmuch as the flow of fluid and the flow of electric current in many respects are analogous, it may be indicated further that the length of path for fluid also may not be independent of saturation. The following relationship can be derived to express the resistance to flow of electric current through a core sample partially saturated with conductive wetting phase, the non-wetting phase being non-conductive: where L is the average length of path followed by the current in flowing through a length L of partially saturated core, where L is the length of current path when the core is fully saturated, and where Rs and R, are the specific resistivities of the partially saturated and saturated core sample, respectively. It will be noted that R., the specific resistivity of the core sample when S, = 1.0, is equal to the "formation resistivity factor"' multiplied by the specific resistivity of the saturating fluid. If it be assumed that the average lengths of path for fluid flow and for the flow of electric current are the same, then equation (5) may be combined with equations (l), (2) and (3) to give the following relationship: The above equation suggests including a correction for tortuosity when calculating the relative permeability of a reservoir rock to a wetting phase. The correction factor may be obtained from the resistivity-saturation relationship. Progress in the art of amalgamation in recent years has been negligible, partly because a copper plate, though it occupies extensive floor space, requires frequent attention and invites theft, is a simple piece of apparatus that gives visible results; partly because the impression prevails that amalgamation is too primitive a process to merit consideration by an up-to-date metallurgist. Both these objections can be overruled. Plates can and will be superseded by more efficient, theft-proof amalgamating units. Improved methods of application other than by settlement or by impact, neither of which is effective for removal of fine gold, will be developed, and the process given wider opportunity. As A. F. Crosse aptly remarked, neglect to utilize amalgamation when free gold can be recovered thus is comparable to the decision of a storekeeper to deal only with credit customers. Usual practice is to follow amalgamation with cyaniding. Rarely is attention paid to the possibility of reversing the order—of extraction of the fine gold first by cyaniding; the coarse, subsequently, by amalgamation. Such a sequence avoids the alleged hazard that amalgamated gold particles may be unacted upon by cyanide, whereas cyanided gold particles are readily amalgamated. Research has indicated, however, that the mercury coating on a gold particle is easily soluble in cyanide solution, probably because such coating is a compound of gold and mercury. Comparative-test results at one plant, of cyaniding a ground concentrate before and after amalgamation, showed total extractions of about 90 and 100 per cent, respectively, indicating high solubility of the mercury-gold particle, if present, or the advantage of preliminary impoverishment before cyaniding, or both. The contention that a loss in residue from an amalgamation-cyanidation plant is occasioned by presence of amalgamated gold that escapes action by solution is not supported by adequate evidence. The function and scope of mercury as an aid to extraction of gold by cyanide is deserving of attention. It is a powerful desulfurizer. The Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) is responsible for several sets of legislation, which, among other things, regulate the storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods as well as every aspect of the life cycle of explosives in order to prevent explosions, fires and spillages. The legislation with particular relevance to explosives includes: The Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act 1961; the act deals with the storage, manufacture, sale, import, authorisation and use of explosives. It is primarily framed for use of explosives and fireworks in the general community but also has relevance for storage on mine sites. The Dangerous Goods (Transport) Act 1998; this act regulates the transport of explosives on public roads, but not on mine sites. The Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 (MSI Act); this act and supporting regulations deal with the full spectrum of occupational health and safety in the mining industry. There is a substantial section in the regulations dealing with the use of explosives at a mine site.DoIR has identified the need for security upgrades of the Government Explosives Reserves, the need to tighten security measures at mine sites, the need for improved security checking for licensed shotfirers and the need to restrict the availability of explosives to authorised people who have had appropriate security checks. It is also clear that we need restrictions on the sale and use of ammonium nitrate (AN). A number of additional security measures are being proposed and all proposals are being refined by ongoing industry consultations. These will be adopted into new explosives regulations in association with the new Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2002 (DGS Act). Government finalised the act in June 2004. The act remains dormant until new explosives and dangerous goods regulations have been prepared. When the DGS Act and a suite of regulations are proclaimed as a package, sometime between December 2004 and April 2005, the old legislation consisting of the current two acts, will be automatically repealed. It is also proposed that all explosive regulation, including those under the MSI Act will be consolidated in one place under the DGS Act for user friendliness.

In this our fifth year of actual mining, a resume of our methods of mining may prove of interest. Our conditions are radically different from those of other districts; and we are just commencing to be able to draw conclusions regarding the systems in use. The ore-bodies of the range lie in a blanket-formation varying in width from 200 or 300 feet to over half a mile, and in length from 500 feet to more than 2 miles. It is practically horizontal in bedding, but in places has a dip of as much as 7 feet in 100 for a quarter of a mile. The top of the ore is in most cases nearly level, although local rolls make the back (or top of the ore) vary to the extent of 10, or in rare cases 20 feet, and very frequently there is a general slope of the top of the ore, as well as the bottom, which makes it impossible to mine it all from one level. Taking the average of long stretches, the side-walls may be described as quite regular; but local deflections make it necessary to prospect for the wall-rock, and in drifting underground it is common to drive along the sidewalls, uncovering them almost continuously, and thus making sure that no large pockets of ore are missed. The dip of the side-walls varies greatly, but an average is probably between 45' and 60°, sloping inward at the bottom, making the general shape of the ore-body not exactly a basin, but more nearly a trough, usually with a longitudinal trend and sloping sides, and ore much the deepest at the center. As to rock-occurrences inside the ore-body, the properties most largely worked may be said to be particularly free from rock, although much trouble is occasioned by bunches or small masses. In most cases these are not properly described as " horses" of rock, since they have neither continuity nor regularity of trend, but are offshoots connected with the side-walls or bottom.

"Due to a drainage problem, the Lanzhou to Chongqing high-speed rail line had been out of service during the 2015 wet season, so a drainage tunnel is to be constructed for the line and required to be accomplished before the 2016 wet season. This drainage tunnel is only 5 meters below the line which is in service, therefore blasting vibration needs to be strictly controlled. This paper introduces all theapplied blasting methods, parameters and detonation throughout the entire project, finally bringing in the electronic detonator stagger phase technique and corresponding time difference for detonation."
