FORMER studies of sedimentary strata have been based upon the mineralogical and mechanical characters of the solid components, rather than upon the open spaces between them. For present purposes let us take another point of view, and consider not the rock material, but rather its cavities, the pores and the fissures or cleaved joints which connect with them. Let us think of the geologic column not as a series of rocks, but as a mass of irregular connecting capillaries. Different parts of the column may be distinguished by the absolute size and by the relative amount of its open spaces. Porosity Each stratum of the column is characterized by a certain porosity, which would be independent of the size of the rock grains if all were of the same shape. Slichter has shown that the percentage of open space in a pile of equal spheres is practically constant regardless of the diameter of the spheres. This is approximately true of clean, assorted sand or gravel, but it is far from being the case with most natural sediments which have a widely variable porosity, the magnitude of which is determined mainly by the amount of fine and of secondary material between the larger grains. The shape of the grains materially affects porosity, round grains leaving more open space than angular or flat grains. The thin plates of kaolin and the fine plastic matter of clay fit quite perfectly when pressed together, and it is probably this close fit, determined by shape of grain, rather than the small size of a grain, that causes the low porosity of ordinary clay shale.

"Recycling of used aluminum beverage cans(UBCs) is one of the important issues for aluminum manufacturer presently. The direct re-melting of UBCs shows two problems. One is a reduction in molten aluminum recovery and the other is a contamination of other metals such as Ti and Fe from paints. Both problems are caused by paints coated on the surfaces of aluminum cans. Removal technique of the paints, therefore, has been required. Although roasting and shot blast techniques have been developed, both were not successful in removing the paints effectively. A swell-peeling method has been applied to remove them using a methylene chloride solution with acids and it works very well. Small laboratory scale tests have been carried out to develop the commercial process and clarify the mechanism of the swell-peeling method in the present study.When the surface area of UBC is more than 10 cm2, peeling time is independent of the surface area, about 60 seconds, because swelling phenomenon is controlled by the penetration of the liquid through the fine pits on the surface of the paint. This is good for a commercial process. Peeling takes place when the swelling force generated by methylene chloride exceeds the adhesion force between the film and the surface of aluminum, that is weakened by the coexisting acid, especially halogenated acetic acid."

A study of waterflood efficiency, given in terms of oil recovery at water breakthrough and u1timate recovery, has been made on short, consolidated Pyrex glass cores rendered oil-wet by chemical treatment. Contact angle. interfacial tension, permeability and porosity were the variables considered. Oil and water viscosities, core length and velocity of flooding were held constant. The data permit interfacial tension, contact angle, porosity, and permeability to be grouped into a scaling coefficient along with viscosity, velocity of flooding and length of core. Correlation of the .scaling coefficient with recovery at water breeakthrough is found to follow prediction; correlations of ultimate recovery demand a scaling coefficient different from that which correlates breakthrough recovery. The work indicates that, with proper control, a group of similar natural cores, of permeability plug size, call he correlated 10 indicate basic flooding performance. INTRODUCTION The fraction of oil recovered from a porous medium is related to both reservoir conditions and production techniques. An investigation of all factors that enter into this relationship is necessary in order to arrive at the optimum method of exploitation for oil reservoirs. To define this relationship, laboratory studies have been made by a great many investigators. However. an important obstacle arises if the results of these experiments on water flooding are to be applied to practice. Ditferences in behavior are to be expected between reservoirs of the dimensions encountered underground and those used in laboratory work. Factors which play an important role under laboratory conditions may be of no consequence in reservoirs. Laboratory operating practices generally differ from field operating practices. Thus. a mere understanding of the mechanism of the displacement of oil by water is not enough. It is just as necessary that the process be analyzed dimensionally to give continuity and validity to the conversion from laboratory to field. The theory of oil displacement that has come to be accepted by the majority of those who are associated with reservoir mechanics had its beginning in the work of Leverett¹ and Buckley and Leverett2. The banking of oil, observed by many previous workers, was described by the "fractional flow" and the "frontal advance'' equations. The validity of the Buckley-Leverett theory was substantiated by the experimental and theoretical work of Terwilliger et al³; moroever, the theory was extended by the introduction of the idea of a "stabilized zone" to describe the banking of oil. Levine5 showed that the Buckley-Leverett equations gave reasonable agreement between calculated and experimental breakthrough recoveries only if the capillary pressure and gravity terms were included. Rapoport and Leas1 investigated the properties of linear floods and showed that both breakthrough and maximum recovery are related to a "scaling coefficient'' derived from the Buckley-Leverctt equations. Jones-Par-ra and Calhoun6 presented another scaling coefficient which included both viscous and capillary variables. Such scaling coefficients should suffice to predicl waterflood efficiency. However, some experimenters report data which does not appear consistent with the healing coefficient approach. Following the startup of the zinc plant in Clarksville, Tennessee, in 1978, the original effluent treatment plant did not perform as designed. The sludge, produced in a conventional lime neutralization treatment, settled poorly and began to fill the permitted lined impoundment within two years, well short of the original design capacity. Another sludge pond had to be constructed. This led to a new process modification of the original design. Although the design is still based on the conventional lime precipitation of heavy metals, the current effluent treatment plant has evolved into a hydrometallurgical circuit, capable of producing good quality water without generating sludge. Undesirable elements are bled from the zinc circuit and are rejected through the effluent treatment operations. Wallboard grade gypsum is produced, instead of sludge, and all the gypsum is sold to cement and wallboard plants. This operation also recovers and returns more than 1,500 tonnes of zinc annually to the 105,000 tonne/y zinc plant.

Dredging and Flooding was completed on the Falconbridge Limited "New Tailings Area" in the period from 1996 through 1998, as part of their site closure measures. Part of the decision making process and closure planning was water quality prediction, including oxidation and diffusion modelling. The purpose of this modeling was to define the potential water quality that would result during and after dredging. A significant body of research on the geochemistry and oxidation kinetics of this site had been compiled. The results of the modeling provide practical insight on the potential water quality that may be expected. Water quality in the pond has steadily improved since flooding was completed with the exception of short term peaks during spring runoff. Aquatic vegetation is appearing through natural recovery and transplanting of local species, and colonies of minnows are now observed in the ponds.

The production of natural abrasives varied in quantity and value compared with 1976. Output of tripoli-type materials was approximately the same in both quantity and value. Special silica stone products decreased in quantity and increased in value. Garnet production decreased both in quantity and value. The production of emery increased and the production and value of manufactured abrasive material was approximately the same. Foreign Trade Imports of abrasive materials were 23% more in value than in 1976, and exports plus reexports increased in value 10%. Net imports, the excess of imports over exports and reexports, were $35.3 million. The volume and value of all abrasive materials exported varied.

Subsidence issues associated with historic mine workings have highlighted the need for enhanced geotechnical management of the Martha pit over the remaining life. In conjunction with a detailed analysis of pit slope issues a comprehensive geotechnical management plan has been developed at Martha and is being used as the basis for development of similar plans in other Newmont operations.   This paper covers the geotechnical issues facing the Martha operation and the development and application of the management plan.

A short review is given of the effects of corrosion fatigue on the materials used in pressurized water-reactor vessels. Selected topics such as testing procedures, test data, and mechanisms in simulated environments are discussed. The main fact that emerges is that most of the data on the growth of fatigue cracks reside below the ASME X1 1980 High-R 'Wet' design-code lines, Le. they fall within that specification. Finally, some recent advances in the understanding of the corrosion-fatigue behaviour of such materials in pressurized water reactors are highlighted.

The environment at the lunar surface is drastically different from the one we are used to on Earth. The Moon has one-sixth of Earth's gravity, virtually no atmosphere, a surface bathed in radiation and micrometeorites, large temperature gradients, low seismicity, and a dusty, rubbly surface. To successfully mine and process materials on the Moon and to mitigate degradation effects in the hostile lunar environment, these factors require new designs for equipment and development of new techniques and technologies.

DEVELOPMENT of preferred orientation in uranium is of interest because of the strongly anisotropic properties of the orthorhombic crystal structure. Harris&apos; reported inverse pole figures for rolled uranium rods which showed <010> and <410>* to be parallel to the rolling direction after On 0.19-in. spherical X-ray diffraction specimens taken from the center of the middle section of each rod, pole distribution data were obtained by the spectrometric method described previously.4 The specimen was rotated rapidly about the axis coinciding with the rod axis in order that a large number of grains could be scanned and was rotated slowly about an axis perpendicular to the rod axis. The variation in the diffracted X-ray intensity was recorded as a function of the latter motion (angle 4). Fiber-axis distribution charts (inverse pole figures) were prepared by the method described by Setter, McHargue, and Williams." After having been corrected for background radiation, the pole distribution data (I vs ?) were normalized. A normalizing factor for each plane has been shown to be Iranaom = f I sin 4 ? 4 and was obtained by graphical integration from the data for that plane plotted as I sin ? vs ?. THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute. Since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1° to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. 1). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-antimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the&apos; liquidus curve of the .binary alloys did not intersect at the eutectic temperature. An equivalent effect was observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent investigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 251.5°C. The observation that the curves of primary crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomenon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4Pb. He felt that super-cooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3. the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature of 250° to 252°C. at a rate of cooling of about 6°C. per min. Abel, Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous, publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic contains only 11,4 to 11.5 per cent antimony. Feeder-Breakers were an unknown but much needed piece of machinery when U. S. underground coal mines started converting to more efficient belt haulage of the R.O.M. coal as compared to conventional methods that the 1950&apos;s offered. These simple electromechanical machines offered efficiencies in three areas: (1) they contained a surge hopper that allowed a "load&apos; of coal to be dumped without delay; (2) this material was fed horizontally by a drag chain conveyor into a rotating carbide pick breaker that broke all oversize material into a beltable size, and (3) it fed this broken material onto the belt conveyor at a rate conducive to its design. Since its introduction, the Feeder-Breaker has evolved from that first low capacity, low breaking force machine to today&apos;s model capable of breaking materials up to 5 MOHS in hardness and having throughput capabilities exceeding 3,000 TPH with availability in the 90 percentiles.

Introduction Tanco History Tanco is sometimes known as the Bernic Lake Mine. It is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg close to the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. Tanco operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity and centrifugal concentration methods along with a flotation process which recovers ultra-fine tantalum. All tantalum concentrates are shipped to Cabot Supermetals, Boyertown, Pa., for the production of tantalum chemicals and metals. Tanco also produces lithium products from spodumene ore. The lithium concentrates from Tanco are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock to the on-site chemical plant dedicated to the production of cesium formate, a high density drilling fluid. Tantalum milling operations commenced in 1969. In the early years of the operation, feed grades were three to four times as high as they are today. Coarse-grained tantalum mineralization with complete tantalum liberation at sizes of 300 µm allowed for easy recovery with conventional equipment such as spirals and shaking tables. Over the years, the process and feed material to the plant have drastically changed. Due to drastically reduced liberation sizes, efforts have been made to try to recover as much of the liberated particles as possible in order to maintain acceptable recoveries.

The mechanism of activation of ZnS by metal ions and the subsequent flotation induced by xanthate has been considered as a surface redox reaction. By ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of ZnS suspensions, the normally inert ZnS is caused to react with xanthate in the absence of activator. By similar UV irradiation, the rate of adsorption-exchange of activator ions at the ZnS-H2O interface is also increased. Mechanisms of these reactions are proposed and compared to current electrochemical and semiconducting models of sulfide flotation.

ISP (Imperial Smelting Process) produces zinc and lead simultaneously from zinc and lead sulphide concentrates and recovers copper and precious metals into a lead bullion. The strength of sinter is important to keep permeability in the shaft of the Imperial Smleting Furnace. The residual sulphur content of the sinter is also important as it causes metal losses into slag. The paper describes an investigation into the sintering operations to improve sulphur elimination and sinter strength. The micro structure of the sinter and the effect of the blast rate, sintering temperature etc have been studied.

The exponential delta profile equation matches the profiles of a wide range of coal and metalliferous subaerial tailings deltas well, but the original model implies unrepresentatively low solids concentrations. A revision, based on analysis of the governing equations of mobile bed flows with high concentration values, has shown that for exponential delta profiles to form there must be quasi-steady, slowly varying flow and slow deposition as well as tailings with a log-uniform sorting-parameter distribution. Deposition on tailings deltas is slow and the flow in many natural streams and, by analogy, tailings deltas is quasi-steady and slowly varying; the assumption of such flow is justified by the strong congruence of the revised model and the available data. The predictions of the theoretical model are essentially unchanged but concentration and flow Froude number are now not explicitly limited

INTRODUCTION The conventional way to program reservoir problems* for solution on the electric analyzer1 is one which concentrates the block units towards the inner radius of the prototype system being represented by the analog model. This is achieved by the device of considering block units of equal value radial resistance, leading to the consequences: (1) the ratio of the external to the internal radius of each block unit is a constant (i.e. r1/ri-l = constant a); (2) the external radius of the nth block unit is equal to the innermost radius of the system times the constant a raised to the nth power: (3) the capacitance of the block units increase by a factor of a2 going out radially from the innermost to the outermost boundaries of the system; (4) given n block units in the radial direction, the capacitance ratio of the outermost to the innermost block unit is a (2n-2); and (5) the vertical resistance of the block units decrease by a factor of a going out radially from the innermost to the outermost boundaries of the system, such that the ratio of the maximum to minimum vertical resistance is also given by the factor a(2n-2) PRESENT PROGRAMMING METHOD While this conventional way of programming problems is quite adequate for routine uses of the electric analyzer, it leads to difficulties in those cases where the inner radius of the prototype system (e.g., the well-bore) is small compared to the external radius (e.g.. the external reservoir boundary). To handle such a case by the conventional method would require either that a large value be selected for the constant a or that a large number n, of radial block units be chosen. In consequence, the capacitance and vertical resistance ratios become impossibly large, as will be evident from the relations given above. In any event, the size of the smallest and largest capacitors will always be limited by the size of commercially available components, and the analyzer itself will determine how many mesh points are available for radial block units. For example, it can be shown that if the maximum capacitance ratio which can be electrically handled is a factor of l04, the maximum external radius of the system which can be considered (assuming an internal wellbore radius of 0.25 ft is: It is thus seen that in direct consequence of having the inner wellbore radius small compared to the external radius, models extending beyond 30 to 40 ft are not possible when the capacitance ratio is limited to l04. (NB. A value of 10-9 farads can perhaps be taken as the minimum electrical capacitance possible if corrections for the capacitance of the lead wires are to be avoided. Values greater than 10-5 farads would require the use of unstable and inaccurate electrolytic capacitors). On the other hand, models extending out to 500 to 5,000 ft may be desired in single-well problems, and hence the need for a revised method of problem programming. * REVISED PROGRAMMING METHOD The revised method of programming is one which attempts to retain the desirable features of the conventional method (viz. concentration of block units towards the inner boundary, simplicity in computation, etc.) without having as a consequence that impossible capacitance and vertical resistance ratios will be required. The objectives of this paper are to introduce the International Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works and to illustrate to the participants of the 13th Australian Tunnelling Conference 2008 how the insurance industry would like to see the future of tunnelling insurance. Tunnel construction projects have suffered large losses over the years as can be shown from various loss examples and a list of major losses over the last ten to 15 years. Since the consequences of insufficient risk control had to be borne by insurers, these losses have heightened the need for improved and adequate risk management measures so that insurance cover can also in future be provided for this hazardous industry sector. Observations are made as regards to the prevailing trends in the tunnelling industry, which contribute to the increase in risk and have adverse consequences for the insurance industry. To find a solution to this dilemma various options are examined with the suggestion of a Joint Code of Practice for Tunnel Works being agreed by all stakeholders, which would become essential to secure future insurance protection for such project work. The British Tunnelling Society has, in cooperation with the Association of British Insurers, developed such a code, which the International Tunnelling Insurance Group has now adopted for global application in international markets. The content and concept of this code is explained to establish a framework of understanding and applied risk management principles for tunnel works. This initiative also has the support of the International Tunnelling Association and the International Association of Engineering Insurers. The international application of this new code is demonstrated with a few examples, which also includes Australian projects. It is the aim that this code forms in future part of the insurance coverage for tunnelling works in order to put this risk segment on a more sustainable basis. For that reason the insurance industry is seeking the support of all stakeholders of tunnelling construction projects.

Kuroko-type deposits exist in Japanese EEZ. Some of them are present in the Izu-Ogasawara oceanic island arc south of Tokyo. Major two Kuroko-type deposits occur in the area. One is the Sunrise hydrothermal field occurring on the caldera floor of Myojin knoll, which is likely to be the developed stage in sulfide mineralization. Another is present in the crater of Suiyo seamount that is the early stage of sulfide mineralization. The two deposits are here presented on the growth history based on samples recovered by Benthic Multicoring System (BMS).
