There is a great number of asbestos deposits in the USSR. Some of them are quite large ones. The main deposits of chrysotile asbestos can be seen in the sketch map (fig. 1). Bazhenovo deposit situated in Sverdlovsk region is the largest of them. It is on mining operations since year 1889. Systematical studies of asbestos deposits were begun from the first years of Soviet Government and connected with the names of K.E. Tarasov, P. M. Tatarinov, B. J. Merenkov, N.D. Sobolev, F. V. Syromjatnikov, V. N. Lodochnikov, V.P. Petrov, V.P. Eremeev, L.A. Sokolova, V. R. Artemov, V.F. Dybkov and many others. This investigations served the USSR to be one of the most important producers of asbestos in the world. In the limits of the report a characteristic of the main asbestos deposits of the USSR may be done in general outline, from the point of view of their genesis, and in order to show their common features and differences that must be taken into account for forecasting, exploration, and mining of asbestos. All chrysotile asbestos deposits of the USSR were formed of magnesium rock as a result of comparatively lower-grade temperature hydrothermal alteration and free crystallization of fibrous chrysotile in open cavities that served as catalyst As a matter of fact an important mineral for industry is not chrysotile in general, a widely distributed rock-forming mineral, but a long fibrous and mainly vein variety of chrysotile. It must serve for geologists as an important prospecting criteria. A geologist should search for the mineral not only places of possible chrysotile generations, but places where asbestos may be crystallized in its long fibers that could be fiberized well. The Soviet geologists distinguish two groups of chrysotile-asbestos deposits: (1) related to ultrabasic rocks and (2) related to sedimentary dolomite terranes, taking into account what the maternal rock was affected by hydrothermal solutions. The largest deposits related to ultrabasite. The largest deposits in dolomite are small ones but their asbestos contains almost no iron. So much asbestos is a better filler into insulating plastics. There is a few types of asbestos deposits in the limits of the ultrabasic group. The largest of them is a Bazhenovo type which the deposits of Urals are attributed, and Bazhenovo deposits is the first instance. The Bazhenovo type is characterized by the most complete zonality in disposition of various kinds of asbestization. This type of deposits is practically the only one to be in working now in the USSR.

A new type Pb-Ag (0.8wt%)-Bi (0~5.0wt %) alloy used as anode in electrowinning of zinc from sulphuric acid electrolytes was prepared. The electrochemical properties of this ternary lead alloys have been tested and compared with those of Pb-Ag (0.8wt %) anodes used in industry. Results show the anodic overpotential decreases with the increasing of Bi content in the alloys. When the content of Bi was 1.0 wt% and 5.0 wt%, the anodic overpotential is about 40?50 mV and 60?80 mV lower than that of Pb-Ag (0.8wt %) alloy, respectively. The formation of oxide layers on the surface of these alloys was traced by LSV methods and the composition of the anodic oxide layers was characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. The surface layer on the two type anodes examined is mainly composed of a?PbO2 and ß?PbO2. But different structure of the surface layer was observed, Pb-Ag (0.8wt%)-Bi (1.0wt %) has a more fine-grained structure as compared to Pb-Ag (0.8wt %). But the film on Pb-Ag (0.8wt%)-Bi (3.0wt %) alloy is rather friable, cracked and not tightly attached to the anode.

Antamina is the largest skarn in the world with a resource of ~2,968 Mt averaging 0.89% Cu, 0.77% Zn, 11 g/t Ag and 0.02% Mo (Glencore, 2015). The Antamina skarn surrounds an intrusive complex consisting of 4 porphyry centers comprised of at least 10 phases emplaced between 10.96 ± 0.03 Ma and 10.23 ± 0.07 Ma (U-Pb zircon; this study). Major phases in each porphyry center include: P1 (early), P2 (inter-mineral), and P3 (late). P1 is related to skarn formation; P2 and P3 cross-cut skarns and do not contain skarn alteration. Re-Os molybdenite ages reveal an early mineralization stage in skarns (10.58 ± 0.07 Ma to 10.39 ± 0.05 Ma) and a late stage in P2 and P3 (10.05 ± 0.06 Ma to 9.68 ± 0.05 Ma). Zircon and molybdenite ages generally decrease from NE to SW along the axis of the deposit, and record ~1.5 Ma of magmatic-hydrothermal activity

The authors are looking at the behaviour of the mineral processing circuits by means of the simulators operating under random disturbance. The present paper deals with the fuzzy control systems in comparison with PID controllers. A series of tests are conducted on simplified prototype processes with (1) dead time plus first-order lag model and (2) diffusive model. In the next series of tests the self-sustained process model was introduced to improve control against dead time. In both cases fuzzy and PID controllers are optimised by EVOP method. Particular attention is paid to the effect of observation noise to analyse for the problems which can be fatal to practical applications in mineral processing. Finally the methods developed are applied to a closed-circuit wet grinding system simulator operating under random disturbance.

A generalization of Gy?s 1979 model for the variance of the fundamental sampling error has been proposed at WCSB2?2005 by Geelhoed. This generalized model can potentially lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes. However, a new parameter is required by the new model: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particles?(Cij). It is important that this new parameter, which is at the basis of the new theory, is well understood in the sampling and blending community. In order to clarify the meaning of Cijand to prevent potential misinterpretation of Cij, we discuss the difference between Cij and an intuitively associated, but different, parameter: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particle types?(Mij). In this contribution, the theoretical difference between both parameters is clarified. Simulations demonstrate that, numerically, the difference between Cij and Mij can be large. Some additional advantages of the approach which uses Cij are discussed: (i) the approach based on Cijis more general; (ii) in all cases where Mij is known, Cij can be determined as well, while the reverse is not true; (iii) an equation already exists that relates the sample variance to the value of Cij.

INTRODUCTION Grinding control is currently the most publicized control subject in the minerals industry. Flotation control and crushing control have not as yet received the widespread attention that grinding control has. The primary reasons for this center around the high capital costs of grinding equipment and the fact that grinding mills are extremely energy inefficient. In a typical copper concentrator the energy requirements to produce refined copper are: (1) [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Mining4.93 x 10817.3 Mineral Processing9.63 x 10833.8 Smelting and Refining13.9 x 10848.9] One-third of the total energy used for copper production is for mineral processing. A breakdown of this energy into process steps yields the following: [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Crushing and Grinding 7.16 x 108 73.8 Flotation 0.76 x 108 7.8 Materials Handling1.78 x 10818.4] It is apparent that comminution operations consume the largest proportion of the energy for processing and as such become major targets for improvements in efficiency. Unfortunately, size reduction operations are extremely inefficient. Efficiency calculations for grinding range from less than 0.1% to about 5% depending on the evaluation criteria. Because of these facts, grinding control has been and will continue to be the focus of major process control efforts. OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS All benefits achieved as the result of grinding control are derived from modifying physical parameters which improve the efficiency of the grinding mill. THE Utah coal field to which the name Book Cliffs is applied runs in a northeast direction from Mt. Hilgarde, in Sevier county, along the escarpment of the Wasatch Plateau to the vicinity of Castle Gate, thence southeast along the Book cliffs, which lie to the north of and generally within sight of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad,. to the Colorado line. The Book cliffs form the southern escarpment of the West and East Travaputs Plateaus, and vary in height from 2,000 to 6,000 ft. At the base of the Wasatch and Book Cliffs escarpments is a broad plain known as Castle valley. The coal beds outcropping in the escarpments along this valley are worked on the largest scale of any in the State, and this particular area is known locally as the Castle Valley coal field. Geology The Book cliffs are capped by the Tertiary-Eocene-formation, consisting of varicolored shales; buff sandstone, conglomerate, and subordinate thin beds of limestone. Different sections show diverse stratigraphy. This is mainly the Wasatch formation, and lies unconformably upon the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous. Fig. 1 is a generalized section of the rocks of the. Book Cliffs field. The Mesaverde formation contains the cliff-making rocks of the Book cliffs, and is composed of massive sandstone interbedded with sandy shales and beds of coal and carbonaceous shale. The sandstone has greater resistance to erosion and the formation is characterized by escarpment ledges and cliffs. The shale is commonly sandy and is drab in color, but where it is associated with the coal it is usually carbonaceous. Downstream dispersion curves for certain trace metals were obtained from two mineralized areas in the southeastern U. S. In Lincoln Co., Georgia, 7 sample sets were collected downstream from the Magruder mine, a polymetallic sulfide deposit (Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag-Au) in metavolcanic rocks. Five sample sets were collected along Joe Mill Creek in Grainger Go., Tennessee, downstream from a zone of zinc mineralization in carbonate rocks (Mississippi Valley-type). In both areas, analyses were made of Fe-Mn oxide coatings on lithic fragments and quartz pebbles, and the -80 mesh fraction of the stream sediment. A comparison of the dispersion curves reveals the following: 1.) the anomaly/background ratio is markedly higher in the Fe-Mn oxide coatings for zinc and copper; 2.) the anomaly/background ratlo is markedly higher in the -80 mesh fraction for lead which is not concentrated in the coatings; and, 3.) the Zn/Mn and Cu/Mn ratios in the coatings are useful in that they enhance downstream derectability of mineralization as well as provide for a simpler analytical procedure. There are several potential advantages of using coatings vs. the conventional -80 mesh fraction in stream sediment surveys. Because soluble metal is brought into the stream mainly in groundwater, deeper anomaly sources may be detectable from the oxide coatings than from clastic fractions of alluvium where much of the metal is derived from erosion of soils. Variability due to sampling may also be reduced, providing better discrimination of anomalies. In areas of glacial or alluvial cover, coating surveys may be particularly applicable.

The Radio Hill nickel-copper deposit is located 30 km south of Karratha. It is a new discovery in an area where similar mineralization had been previously discovered at Mt. Scholl and Ruth Well. Radio Hill is the first massive Ni-Cu sulphide deposit of economic significance to have been located in the Western Pilbara.Preliminary studies indicate that the sulphide mineralization occurs within gabbros, pyroxenites and peridotites of a basic igneous cumulate layered sequence. Primary sulphides have been subsequently remobilized and concentrated as stringer and massive mineralization. This is tentatively attributed to the intrusion of a further gabbroic body.The deposit appears to be of the gabbroic association type with a Ni:Cu ratio varying from 1:4 in the outer parts of the mineralized envelope to 1:0.9 towards the central zones. In drill core observations, chalcopyrite surrounding pyrrhotite was noted in many instances. Drilling has so far delineated a body developed over a strike length of 600 m and a horizontal width of up to 25 m. The mineralization plunges 20° to the southwest with a southerly dip varying from 75° in the west to about 20° - 30° in the east.The deposit is a leaf-shaped ore zone, plunging southwest from a vertical depth of 17 m in the north to 300 m in the south. The massive sulphides occur as lensoid masses within this zone. A geological resource of up to 2.5 million tonnes at 1.5 per cent Ni and l.4 per cent Cu is indicated.The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite, with significant cobalt, platinum group metals and gold. Tellurides of Pd, Bi and Pb were detected by scanning electron microprobe within the pyrrhotite and other trace metals include Zn and native tin. Massive magnetite is sometimes associated with the massive pyrrhotite intersections.A test on one composite massive sulphide sample showed that pyrrhotite is present mainly as the non-magnetic hexagonal variety and only 10 per cent is present as magnetic monoclinic pyrrhotite.The deposit has no surface expression and its identification was based mainly Oil drilling targets generated by geophysical methods. No secondary minerals have been observed in association with the primary sulphides, even though the deposit is only 17 m below surface in the northern part.

The samples studied in this paper were derived from the iron oxide facies of iron formations (IFs) of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, south-eastern Brazil. The rich-iron oxide varieties of the IFs can be regarded as Fe-O systems because they consist predominantly of aggregates of haematite and magnetite crystals. The study was based on carefully selected samples in which magnetite crystals occur as isolated large crystals set in a matrix of haematite grains. Optical microscopy and an electron microscope equipped with an electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) system were used to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic relationships involved in the phase transformation between magnetite and haematite. The magnetite crystals in the IF samples are partially transformed to haematite and this process is also known as martitisation. This transformation occurs along the crystallographic planes {111} of the magnetite producing a characteristic triangular pattern of interlocking lamellae of transformed haematite crystals that are oriented parallel to octahedral plane {111}. This new generation of haematite is referred to martite because of the martitisation process. EBSD analyses show that the magnetite and the new haematite crystals, martite, share crystallographic planes of highest atomic density, eg {111} and (0001), respectively, possibly due to the ccp and hcp atomic arrangement of the two crystals. Stereographic projections of these two planes therefore coincide when the maxima of their poles are plotted. However, the crystallographic orientation of the haematite crystals in the matrix shows maxima of (0001) poles that do not coincide with those of {111} planes of magnetite. Consequently, it is concluded that the direct transformation to haematite crystals retains the crystallographic orientation memory of the former magnetite crystals, possibly due to the similar manner whereby their atoms are packed together in the crystal structures. On the other hand, no such relationships are observed between magnetite and haematite crystal in matrix. This suggests that haematite grains in the matrix may have been formed by other processes rather than those involved in the iron oxide transformation observed within the magnetite grains.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE iron-nail method of assaying has been used for a number of years, but has not met with the approval of all assayers. The method possesses advantages which may be given as follows : (1) no preliminary treatment is required ; (2) a lead button of proper size can be obtained (3) it is economical. On, the other hand, it has its disadvantages, which may be summed up as follows: (1) it is not applicable to ores containing large amounts of impurities other than sulphur, as practically all the base metals will contaminate the lead button ; (2) the slag is unsatisfactory in the larger number of fusions; (3) the method was known to give low silver results under certain conditions and the gold results were questionable. It was with the idea of determining the extent of this latter disadvantage that the following investigation was undertaken. It is well known that the fusion obtained in the lend assay is far more satisfactory than that in the " nails method " for gold and silver. The principal difference in the charges as a class is the presence of considerable reducing agent in the lead charge, and a limited oxidizing action in the nails charge, due to PbO. The possibility of improving the nails fusion by simulating the lead charge was the reason for using argol in some tests, even though there were reasons for expecting this would have -au objectionable effect on the results.

The nature of the coal and of the roof in No. 3 seam at Coal brook Collieries is such as to preclude the use, during bord and pillar mining, of conventional mining equipment that employs cutting and blasting in its production cycle. Continuous mining machines of the borer type, operating within a mining height range of 1,9-2,3 m, have been successfully employed in No. 3 seam since 1957.The experience gained with this type of equipment, the operational methods adopted, and the results achieved are described. The ventilation method used to eliminate the dust and methane hazards created by this type of equipment is stressed. The limitation on the minimum mining height that can be obtained with the borers in use has lead to the recent introduction of a Rotary Drum type of continuous mining machine. This equipment is capable of operating in areas where the seam width decreases to 1,5m. The production potential of the machine has been proved. The roof conditions created by the cutting action of the Rotary Drum type of miner are not considered satisfactory and a modified drum head profile is to be tried.

"Rubber liners at Denison Mines Limited are used in 10 1/2x 24' low discharg0 pebble mills. These were originally 10 1/2 x 13 Dominion overflow type ball mills. Experience here shows that the wear of rubber and ni-hard lifters is approximately the same in the feed end half of the mill, while the wear of rubber lifters is much greater in the discharge half. The wear of rubber plates is considerably less than white iron in the feed end half of the Mill and slightly more in the discharge end half of the Mill. Rubber components are lighter to handle but their installation is time consuming. This leads to the conclusion that a combination of ni-hard lifters a~~ rubber plates is the most economical compromise in Denison's case, for the Mill. Rubber discharge grates are superior to steel grates, while steel feed end liners are superior to rubber.The Use of Rubber Mill Liners at Denison Mines LimitedGrinding is done in two identic0al circuits each consist-ing of one 10 1/2 x 14' Dominion overflow rod mill, two Dorr Oliver quadraplex rake type classifiers, two 10 1/2 x 24' Dominion low discharge grate pebble mills and ancillary pumps and conveyors for pebbles. The correct assessment and understanding of geotechnical conditions is fundamental to mine design and, hence, successful (safe and efficient) mine planning, design and operations. However, this assessment and understanding is simply not possible unless there is a sound appreciation of the geology of the project. This paper addresses geological uncertainty in mine engineering and its communication, and shows that a mining project that does not take geology properly into account in the engineering phase is fraught. Uncertainty levels become excessive, which leads to hazards and consequential risks in design and operations in terms of both safety and efficiency. Several examples, both positive and negative, are provided to make the point. The paper concludes that mining geologists must become more overtly cognisant of the influence of geology on mine engineering. Equally importantly, mining (and geotechnical) engineers must communicate better with their geological colleagues to ensure that they (the engineers) have a clear understating of the geological issues affecting their operations. The engineers must know how to ask the right questions of the geologists. Engineers who do not understand and take account of geology in their designs and operations are failing the expectations of stakeholders.

Dramatical increase in the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has led to the climate change, which poses a significant threat to human life on Earth. CO2 sequestration via mineral carbonation is the one of the most effective method for mitigating global warming, and is the only way that could store CO2 permanently. In recent years, integrating mineral carbonation via ultramafic mine deposit has received significant attention due to its high potentiality towards commercial application. This review compiles the work conducted by various researchers over the last few years on integrated mineral carbonation processes in mining industry, which use the mine waste materials as CO2 feedstock for mineral carbonation. This paper initially introduces the basic theory of mineral carbonation, with a brief description of various techniques that enhance the rate of mineral carbonation. The enhanced mineral carbonation strategies include pre-treatment of feedstock by thermal, chemical and mechanical activation, and carbonation in a direct or indirect carbonation routes under gas/solid phase or aqueous phase. This paper then introduces the scope of application of integrated mineral carbonation. This includes the types of mine suitable for integrated mineral carbonation, the properties of mine waste materials preferable for CO2 sequestration, and the worldwide locations potentially viable for integrated mineral carbonation. Moreover, this paper critically reviews and discusses the integrated mineral carbonation process in mining industry. The integrated mineral carbonation processes include modified passive carbonation techniques at tailing dams, and ex-situ carbonation routes using fresh tailings. The focus of the discussions is the role of reaction condition on the carbonation efficiency of mine waste with various mineralogy, and the drawback of each integrated mineral carbonation process. All the discussions lead to the suggestions on the technology improvement in the integrated mineral carbonation process. Finally, this paper reviews the economical assessments on the existing integrated mineral carbonation process. Literature to date indicates that the value-add by-products (i.e. recovered metals, valuable carbonated products) play an important role in commercialization of an integrated mineral carbonation process.

This paper reviews the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Bill of 2006, identifies potential areas that require further consideration by the National Treasury and, where appropriate, offers alternatives. At its basic level a royalty regime consists of two elements: the base and the rate that must be applied to the base. Deciding on an acceptable royalty rate is a complex matter and can be done only after extensive analysis of all variables affecting the competitiveness of the regime. The proposed royalty rates are in the range of zero to five per cent and are based on sales revenue. It is argued that future investment patterns are more likely to be influenced by market cycles and commodity prices than policy events. Inevitably the current boom in the minerals sector will come to an end and the success of the proposed regime will be known only when profit margins are under pressure. Policy makers must therefore have the long run in mind when developing policies that affect the ability of industry to do business, without the need to renegotiate each time there is a change in the market. A long-run policy must be sufficiently flexible to allow for consistently fair sharing ratios and splitting of revenues between government and industry. Although broadly in line with international practice, the current version cannot be regarded as internationally competitive and efficient. In order for the royalty bill to become internationally competitive, promote beneficiation of mineral production and adequately compensate the State for the loss of a national resource, the National Treasury should heed the following main recommendations in this review: 1. Abandon the notion that each mineral product must have its own royalty rate; 2. Introduce an NSR type royalty that allows for value-addition costs to be deducted from the base; and 3. Provide for automatic relief through the use of a sliding-scale mechanism based on ability to pay, e.g. the X-Factor used in the gold mining tax formula.

"Historically, alot of jarosite was found in the leaching residue when leaching indium from secondary zinc oxide materials. The reasons for the formation of indium bearing jarosite were theoretically analyzed. The influence of controlling the acidity and the addition of reagents on the indium leaching yield during secondary zinc oxide processing was investigated. In order to increase the leaching yield of indium, a measure of controlling the creation and destruction of jarosite was proposed. The production data shows that the leaching yield of indium was increased from 60 to 96%, and the content of indium in leaching residue simultaneously decreased from 900g/t to 100–200g/t when implementing such controlling measures.INTRODUCTIONIndium does not occur as independent minerals in the earth’s crust and is mainly associated with complex sulphide minerals. Specifically some sphalerites can contain as much as 900g/t of indium. Most indium is recovered from by-products of copper, lead or zinc metallurgy. Therefore, the research on the recovery of by-products in non-ferrous metallurgy is important(Sinclair et al, 2006). The main technologies used for this objective in China include: •,pre-neutralization-reduction-precipitation indium process(Yu et al, 2008), •,countercurrent oxidizing acid leaching process and sulphation roasting-water leaching process(Cao, 2005), •,oxygen pressure acid leaching of zinc concentrate-P204 extraction process(Yang et al, 2006), •,doubleacid leaching-solvent extraction process on lead dross from a reverbatory furnace flue dust(Liu, 2003),•,an acid leaching-solvent extraction process on smelting ash(Zhouet al, 2005). Although high pressure and extreme conditions can be used to improve extraction from high iron bearing indium residues(autoclave processing), mild extraction with lower cost and lower environmental impact are preferred.This paper describes both how the indium extraction using mild conditions in a secondary zinc circuit was quite low and, how through XRD and chemical analysis jarosite formation was found as the main cause. The paper then proceeds to discuss a method for improving the leaching yield and the application of this method in industrial practice."

DOUG HALBE: The kickoff speaker, and my unanimous choice, is Joe Keane. Joe was born in Butte, Montana, and began his association with the mining industry as an under- ground miner at age 16. Currently he is president of KD Engineering and Metcon Research. He had it lucky when he went to school because there were only 44 elements in the periodic table, I understand. [laughter] Here's Joe. JOE KEANE: I'm doing this under protest. Maybe we can start the slides. Mr. Halbe gave me this topic, but I don't like it. I don't like Mr. Halbe either [laughter] because of the way he shanghaied me into this. He called me up on the phone and said this is what you're going to speak about: "Five Things I Never Want to See Again in Plant Design," and I said, "Huh!" Then I started getting stuff from SME about how to make a presentation. I have decided to change the title to "More Than Five Things I Never Want to See in Plant Design," since you can't have a completely negative speech; you have to have other topics. So we will have some other, not completely nonrelated, topics to sort of break the tension. I tried to find a joke to open with. I talked to Omar Mutati. All of his jokes were either about Bill Clinton, our beloved President, or they were too filthy to say in a mixed group. [laughter] So I decided to start this out with a profound statement.
