In the townships of Genoa and Marion, Subdury Mining Division, Ontario, there is a group of twenty-three mining claims known as the Jefferson claims. They are controlled by the Jefferson Mining Corporation and they were staked in 1908 by W. E. Smith, formerly of Sudbury, Ontario, and now of Smith & Reitz, a law firm of Minneapolis, Minnesota. These claims were staked for iron ore and in 1910 about 4000 feet of diamond-drilling was done on them. During the drilling operations galena and sphalerite ~were found in the iron formation in cores from holes, Nos. 2 and 3, claim W. D. 717, Genoa township. This discovery lead to a search for galena and sphalerite in the vicinity and a streak of rock containing these minerals was found in the iron formation a short distance to the east of. the drill holes. A shaft was sunk on this outcrop in 1912 to a depth of 8 feet and bottomed in an attractive lens of galena. Stripping revealed other small exposures of galena and sphalerite in the iron formation.

IT has long been known that there are wide variations in the thermo-electric potential of pyrite. In the last few years a study of this variation and other properties of pyrite was carried out at the University of Toronto by F. G. Smith on specimens of pyrite from many loyalities. As a result of these studies the pyrite geothermometer was developed by Professor Smith. The calibration of the pyrite geothermometer is based on the assumption that "crystals of any one electronically conducting mineral species deposited at a high temperature have a more positive thermoelectric potential than crystals deposited at a low temperature, and the thermo-electric potential varies continuously between any given limits of the temperature of deposition." The cause of the variation was postulated to be crystal discontinuities, such as lineage boundaries. As yet this postulated relationship has not been established as fact. On theoretical grounds it is indicated that the thermo-electric potential of pyrite or any other partial conductor is dependent upon a number of factors as well as the temperature of formation. For this and other reasons there is ground for doubt as to the validity of the relationship postulated above. To date a large number of readings have been made with the pyrite geothermometer which have been recorded in terms of the calibration of the instrument in degrees centigrade. So far most of the pyrite tested by this technique has been in association with gold ore. The values for the temperature of formation obtained in these tests appear to be reasonable and, in relation to geological problems, to vary in the right sense. Determinations on some specimens not in association with gold ore have given readings that appear to be much too high, taking into account the probable maximum temperature of the host rock. To sum up, although many determinations made with the pyrite geothermometer appear to give reasonable values for the temperature of formation of the pyrite, there are at the same time other readings which seem anomalous. On the basis of an examination of available results of work with the pyrite geothermometer, two problems must be considered: 1—the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer; and 2— the nature of the distribution of the thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in relation to the specific problems that have been examined. In this paper the academic problem relating to the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer will not be discussed. Instead, the variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in association with gold veins will be discussed with regard to specific examinations. The first of these two examinations deals with the distribution of thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in association with a gold vein and was carried out in the McIntyre Porcupine Mine, Schumacher, Ont., in the summer of 1949 as part of a study with this technique. The second problem deals with variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in gold ore specimens from all over the world. The specimens used in this study were part of the private collection of Frank Ebbutt, geologist for Howe Sound Exploration Co. Results of Detailed and Reconnaissance Studies In discussion of the results of determinations made in these two studies the values of thermo-electric potential in millivolts will be used. It will be noted that in some of the diagrams the determinations are recorded in terms of pyrite geothermometer temperatures. Fig. 1 is a calibration chart relating pyrite geothermometer temperatures and thermoelectric potentials. A full discussion of the technique is given in the original paper by F. G. Smith.' This chapter explores leadership behavior in a life-threatening situation-fire in a coal mine. Previous chapters have discussed the database of interviews with miners who escaped from underground fires. Researchers raised questions such as: (1) Who led the miners out of the mine? (2) Did leadership make a difference in the escapes? (3) Was the escape leader the hierarchal leader? (4) What, if any, characteristics did the escape leaders possess? Subsequently, researchers analyzed the mine fire database from a group interaction perspective to address the leadership questions posed. Leadership has been one of the most researched topics of human behavior in the twentieth century. Studies have ranged from individual characteristics of leaders, to situational leadership, to interaction of leader and follower, suggesting different leadership techniques for different followers. The question that emerges here is: Are there different types of leadership that "fit" different kinds of situations? In a crisis situation like that examined in the present study, such information about leadership may significantly improve the chances of escape. To address these issues, the study team looked at the formal authority structure before each fire, considered leadership behavior or lack of leadership during the escapes, and examined those conditions associated with the emergence of leadership. According to Bardo [ 1978], "Emergent behaviors are those forms of action, and the norms, values and beliefs governing those actions, that rise out of the disaster situation." This chapter discusses previous studies in the area of crisis leadership and examines the emergent behaviors of leaders under duress during the mine fire escapes. Previous Studies The research on leadership during emergency situations has consisted mainly of simulation and field studies, with the principal concern being escape from building fires. During the 1980s, Hayashi [1988] created a computer simulation model to evaluate leader behavior in a fire. Although his purpose was to aid in planning for disaster prevention, his findings are relevant because they address the issue of situational leadership in crisis-where a leader changes his or her behavior to fit the situation. Essentially, his simulation model was designed to judge the actions and thinking of leaders. The simulation was tried by 101 subject/leaders 4 times each. The simulation consisted of amaze containing the leader, an informal leader, and 50 evacuees. Interestingly, the results indicated that the leader's actions were not dictated by circumstances. Any differences in behavior were attributed to the individual characteristics of each leader. The study also showed that the worse the situation became, the less individual

The progress of primary recrystallization has been studied in alloys of nickel with 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at. pct Ta. It can be shown that in one particular alloy containing 0.1 Ta and 0.02 02 a large grain structure (0.5 mm diameter) could he developed by primary recrystallization in thin sheetswhich were cold-worked to 97.5 pct reduction in thickness. Electron transmission microscopy demmstrates that this phenonmena was linked to the occurrence of fine precipitates at subboundaries. A discussion of how fine precipitates can exert under certain circumstances a rather distinct retarding effect on nucleation rate is included. IN a former investigation, the recrystallization and texture formation in a series of binary nickel alloys including pure nickel were studied.' Nickel alloys with some tantalum added displayed peculiarities during primary recrystallization which have been studied in more detail by the present investigation. The alloys were prepared by powder-metallurgy techniques similar to the previous investigations.' Pure metal powders were thoroughly mixed to obtain alloys with 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at. pct Ta, referred to as alloy A, B, or C, respectively. The metallic impurities were kept below 0.005 at. pct except iron and cobalt with slightly higher values, by using highly purified nickel and tantalum powders.' The mixtures were pressed into bars and sintered at a temperature of 1300°C. The sintering atmosphere was either high vacuum, dry hydrogen, or wet hydrogen. The sintered rectangular bars were rolled 60 pct to a thickness of 3 mm, then annealed under dry hydrogen at 1000°C and again cold-rolled to about 97.5 pct reduction of thickness. After this heavy deformation, the sheet thickness was 0.07 5 mm. In order to study primary recrystallization which occurred in measurable times between 400" and 600°C, samples of the rolled sheets were annealed in a salt bath at various temperatures for various times in order to study the progress of recrystallization by hardness measurements and microscopic examination. For optical observation, the samples were polished and etched in a solution of 65 cu cm HNO3, and 18 cu cm acetic acid in 20 to 100 cu cm H2O, depending of the particular sample and annealing treatment. For transmission electron microscopic observations, thin foils were prepared by the combined window and Bollmann techniques.273 The electrolyte consisted of 23 pct perchloric acid and 77 pct acetic acid held at 15°C. Polishing was performed at a current density of 0.4 amp per sq cm. The examination of the thin films was accomplished by a Siemens Elmiscope-type electron microscope operating with an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. RESULTS The progress of primary recrystallization was very accurately followed in these alloys in order to establish the time when recrystallization started and ended during an isothermal anneal. Table I gives some of the data obtained by these studies. The time for beginning is a mean value, where somewhat less than 5 pct of the matrix has recrys-tallized. The end of recrystallization is the time when at least 95 pct of the matrix has recrystal-lized. Listed are three different B alloys, with 0.1 Ta distinguished by different sintering atmospheres which influence the rate of primary recrystallization. By the above method, the state of the grain structure when primary recrystallization was completed, but grain coarsening had not started, could be clearly defined. The average grain diameter of the recrystallized matrix is also given in Table I. The grain size did not depend on the temperature of the isothermal anneal. With one exception the grain size of the primary recrystallized matrix was found to be rather fine

WHILE the installation of mine bulkheads to retain water under high pressure is y no means a rarity, the following points Which arose in the designing and placing of two of these bulkheads may be of interest: The Hibernia magnetite mine, located about 40 miles west of New York, in the State-of New Jersey, is partly filled with water. This mine is located on an ore lens, the outcrop of which is over a mile long. The ore has been mined from this lens from the surface to a depth of more than 1,500 ft. It was held desirable to- separate the old workings from the new, and to allow the former to fill to the 850-ft. level. Two weak places existed between the new and old workings below this level: namely, a temporary bulkhead on the 10th level and a rock bulkhead of indeterminate thickness on the 16th level. When the matter of allowing the old workings to fill was investigated, the fact was developed that if these old workings were filled, the bulkhead on the 10th level would be subjected to a water pressure of about 50 lb. per square inch, and that 200 lb. per square inch would act on the 16th-level bulkhead. As the above-mentioned barriers were not deemed of sufficient strength to permit of these pressures, it became necessary to design and install new bulkheads. Design As the 16th-level bulkhead was required to withstand a pressure of 200 lb. per square inch, it presented some difficulties. A careful consideration of the various types of mine dams now in use led to the adoption of a design of the form of a truncated wedge. In this, the pressure side of the dam is of greater area than the back, so that the resultant action is similar to driving the wedge. By cutting generous skewbacks in the walls, roof, and floor, this type in reality becomes an invisible arch. The wedge feature tends to compress the materials in the bulkhead, thereby adding to its imperviousness.

In their analysis of Eqs. 29 and 30, the authors correctly deduce the following behavior limits for the "differential capacitance model". 1. When the rate group a is sufficiently large, the model reduces to that implied by Eq. 1, i.e., the simple convection-diffusion model. 2. When the rate group a is sufficiently small, the model reduces to that implied by Eq. 1 with 1 replaced by 1, i.e., the simple convection-diffusion model with a total pore volume equal to that occupied by the mobile fluid in the original model. Unfortunately, the authors' solution, Eq. C-1, to the transformed versions of Eqs. 29 and 30 does not exhibit the same limiting behavior. For example, as a approaches zero, Eq. C-1 reduces to the solution to Eq. 1 or, equivalently, the solution to Eqs. 29 and 30 for sufficiently large values of a. Therefore, it can be concluded that Eq. C-1 is not a general solution to Eqs. 29 and 30; this conclusion can be easily verified by substitution. I suggest that the correct form of Eq. C-1 is the following: It is generally realized that accounting for dispersion effects is an extremely tricky business; therefore no one should criticize the pragmatic approach of Coats and Smith who proceeded by accessible theory, made use of some available phenomenology, and who then took the trouble to check the consequences, against their own carefully undertaken experimental results. Here I should like to defend three assertions: (1) Coats and Smith copy the error of previous authors in the formulation of the so-called simple diffusion model (which error is then retained in their differential capacitance model); (2) improving the fit between data and the predictions of an arbitrary model by increasing the number of parameters is a triviality unless the parameters are disposable by being independently determined; and (3) existing experimental procedures lack sufficient resolution to clarify some current theoretical uncertainties. Taking first the view that all theoretical approaches (whether constructed by statistical, finite difference, or continuum arguments) tend to reduce to the same model form as fixed by the number and nature of the disposable parameters, one notices that the "finite-stage" model of Deans1 is equivalent to the Coats and Smith so-called differential capacitance model for the pertinent case where a

Microprocessor technology has revolutionized the business community by placing tremendous computing power in the hands of the end-user for a very inexpensive price tag. The range of applications covers process control, to office automation, to personal computing capabilities. With the influx of this new technology, which these systems have to offer, also comes some unique operational and control considerations. But before we address these items, let us lay a foundation of common terms to be used throughout this presentation. Due to the rapid advances in microprocessor technology, where a new generation of computers is announced every two or three years, it becomes difficult to define a microprocessor system and have it valid for an extended period of time! Therefore, for this presentation, we will be dealing with a subset of microprocessors called Personal Computers or PC's. At the heart of a PC is a Central Processing Unit or CPU. The CPU performs the actual program and command execution. The programs dealing with driving the various peripheral equipment is referred to as the Operating System (for example: DOS : Disk Operating System, CP/M - Control Program/Microcomputers, etc.). The CPU is normally housed in an enclosure which contains power regulators, peripheral equipment interfacing 'cards', and expansion 'slots' to enlarge the capabilities of the PC system.

The Bureau of Mines conducted in-mine tests to determine correction factors applicable to low-velocity airflows (below 150 fpm) measured by the smoke cloud, vane anemometer, and oil of wintergreen tracer gas techniques 0 The average correction factors found for these methods of measurement were lower than those reported in the literature for use with higher velocity measurements. All tests measured airflows with controlled average velocities ranging from 50 to 100 fpm. Correction factors averaged about 0.75 for readings taken by the centerline smoke cloud method, remotely controlled and stickheld center" line anemometer, and split traverse stick-held anemometer. For hand-held centerline anemometer and oil of wintergreen tracer gas readings, correction factors averaged about 0.67. Since special anemometers are needed to measure airflows in this low-velocity range, and since proper calibration of these anemometers is difficult and expensive, the use of anemometers for low-velocity measurement is imprac-tical. On the other hand, smoke and oil of wintergreen give results as con-sistent as those obtained with specially calibrated, low-velocity anemometers. Furthermore, they are easy to use and inexpensive.

The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. Important topics discussed among the attendees included the price of copper, community relations and education.

Due to the shortage of fresh water in the Middle East, seawater has been used as an alternative in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process requires about 7 m3 of water/mt ore. This article aims to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation. Natural pure francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz were characterized by chemical, thermal and x-ray diffraction analyses, surface area, solubility and zeta potential. Synthetic seawater was prepared with the major chemical composition similar to natural seawater as follow; 2.45% NaCl, 0.52% MgCl2, 0.41% Na2SO4, 0.116% CaCl2 and 0.07% KCl. Also, natural seawater was used in application. The point zero of charge was estimated at pH 6.5, 7.8, 9.2 and 2.2 for francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz, respectively. Calcium ions were released from the three minerals with Mg2+ and P2O5 3– released from dolomite and phosphate, respectively. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The effect of individual cations and anions predominant in seawater are studied on individual mineral or group. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions should be controlled by soda ash addition. Sodium silicate improved the selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate of 34% P2O5, at 83% recovery with 0.61% MgO, from an ore assaying 25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO. To minimize the Clcontent, fresh water of about 0.5 m3 /t was used and the Cl- decreased to about 0.09 %

"INTRODUCTIONChina is providing more than 90% of the rare earth products consumed in the whole world. Acidic extractants are commonly used in the extraction separation of rare earths. Saponification of the acidic extractants by basic substances is usually necessary for the purpose of increasing and stabilizing their extraction capacity, and meanwhile inorganic acids are required for both scrubbing and stripping. Thus acids and bases are the main consumed chemicals, and the resulting salts are the main pollutants generated by rare earth separation processes. Currently, due to increasing environmental concerns in China, rare earth solvent extraction separation techniques are being developed to reduce both consumption and emission of chemicals, which is driving the developments on both theories and processes for solvent extraction separations.In the 1970s Prof. Xu et al. developed the Theory of Countercurrent Extraction (Xu, Li, & Yian, 1985). In recent years, the development of novel processes for rare earth separation has moved beyond the earlier theory. One rare earth separation process, the so-called hyperlink process, has been developed in the past decade and proven in industrial practice to dramatically reduce both the consumption and emission of chemicals during multi-component solvent extraction separations, and therefore is now widely used in the Chinese rare earth separation industry (Liao, Wu, Cheng, Wang, Liu, Zhang, & Yan, 2013). The present article will give a brief review of the development of the theory of the hyperlink processes, and the hyperlink separation flowsheets for typical rare earth mines in China designed using the theory.HYPERLINK PROCESSES (LIAO et al., 2013)A flowsheet of multiple-component separation consists of a couple of separation units. The units of a conventional flowsheet separately consume chemicals for saponification and scrubbing and discharge wastewater with resulting salts. In contrast, the separation units in a hyperlink process are hyperlinked and thereby the chemical demands of the whole flowsheet are decreased. For a feed containing t components of A1, A2, …, and At, it has been proved in theory that the separation mode of (AtAt-1…A2)/(At-1At-2…A1) is preferred in a single separation unit. The hyperlinking between separation units can have two forms. The link between two units locating at a same separation level, such as between (A4A3)/(A3A2) and (A3A2)/(A2A1), is known as horizontal hyperlinking. The link between two units located on different levels, such as between (A4A3A2)/(A3A2A1) and (A3A2)/(A2A1), is known as vertical hyperlinking. Both the hyperlinking forms have been proven to save chemical usage and consequently to lower the pollution emissions in industrial practices as well as in theory."

THE method of R. W. Moore1 for determining subsurface interfacial depths by means of integrated curves of apparent resistivity has been analyzed theoretically. It is found that the only unique tangents that can be drawn to such curves are the asymptotes at infinite electrode spacing and the tangents through the origin at vanishing electrode spacing. Explicit expressions have been derived for the relationship between the electrode spacing at the points of intersection of these tangents and the thickness of the surface strata as a function of the conductivity parameters for the two-layer and three-layer earths. It is found that in all cases the electrode spacing at the points of intersection will exceed [3/2] of the thickness of the surface layer, and may even become indefinitely large as the resistivity of the deepest layers increases as compared with that of the surface layer. These results do not agree with the empirical findings of Moore that the intersection of the tangent lines fall at an electrode spacing very approximately equal to the thickness "of the surface layer.

In many high explosive applications, the explosives are covered or clad by a metal. This metal cover may serve a variety of purposes including: 1) to protect and prevent the disturbing or misshaping of the explosive during its transportation, handling and use, 2) in many military applications the cover material itself is used to provide a required effect, for example, the shrapnel from grenades, the metallic liner of shaped charges, and the confinement of explosives so they perform optimally, and, 3) in civilian applications in the use of well perforating shaped charges and linear shaped charges used for the demolition of steel structures such as bridges. For these reasons the interactions between the explosives and their covering materials are of great importance in understanding the performance of these devices.

Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by the alveolar macrophage (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis resulting from occupational exposure to mineral dust. In order to determine if eicosanoid and cytokine production are altered by chronic inhalation of coal dust, we compared the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), thromboxane A2 (TxA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin 1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) by cultured AM from non-smoking normal human volunteers and coal miners. Inhibitors of eicosanoid biosynthesis were administered to AM from coal miners in order to determine if a link between eicosanoid and cytokine production exists in these cells. Basal PGE2, TxA2, TNF and IL-1 production by AM from active miners was increased compared to AM from normal volunteers. However, the production of these eicosanoids and cytokines by AM from former coal miners was reduced compared to control AM. Administration of the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, suprofen, and the lipoxygenase inhibitor, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, reduced PGE2 and TxA2 production in miners' AM but had no effect on LTB4, IL-1 or PDGF production. Specific inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK38,485 was associated with a significant reduction in TNF production in active miners' AM but had no effect on PGE2, LTB4 or IL-1 production. The prostacyclin analogue ZK96,480 also specifically inhibited TxA2 production in active miners' AM. The results of these studies suggest that coal dust exposure is associated with alterations in AM eicosanoid and cytokine production which may be relevant to the development of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In addition, the lack of effect of inhibitors of PGE2 biosynthesis on IL1 production in miners' AM suggests the production of these intercellular messengers may not be linked in AM chronically exposed to coal dust.

THE results of shock-loading studies on copper were reported several years ago by smith. In his experiments, Smith found that there was a correlation between the shock direction and the orientation of twins which the shock produced. By using free-surface-type shots in which the free surface of the specimen was not normal to the shock direction, he showed conclusively that twinning of copper in impulsive loading was caused by the rarefaction wave. Similar tests with iron, however, showed that it twinned during compression. More recent studies of iron2 and on Fe-Si single crystals3 have shown that twinning can be suppressed in these materials by shock loading at pressures high enough so that the velocity of the shock wave exceeds the elastic-wave velocity. From these observations, it appeared that twinning was caused by the shear stresses present in the zone undergoing adjustment from one-dimensional to three-dimensional loading. At high pressures, such a zone becomes so thin that there is insufficient time for the relatively ordered motion of atoms involved in twinning to occur. Twinning in copper, therefore, cannot be produced by a single compressive shock wave because resolved shear stress large enough to create twins exists only for a very short time (0.01 psec or less) before the pressure increases suddenly and loading becomes essentially hydrostatic. (A typical pressure vs time record for a copper shot, illustrating the short rise time of the compression wave, is shown in Fig. 1.) If, on the other hand, a second shock wave can be created in a precompressed sample, then the new elastic limit is several kilobars,4 and a resolved shear stress sufficient to cause twinning should be maintained for an adequate time period (0.1 psec or more). This experimental situation can, in fact, be realized. The experimental arrangement used to do so is shown in Fig. 2. By utilizing the pressure transformation in Fe-V alloys, it was possible to shock-load the copper in compression while the copper was already precompressed. In the first test, an 8 wt pct V-Fe sample was used as a driver for loading the copper, and the copper was exposed to the following series of compressive shocks: 1) an elastic wave of about 8 kbars, which is usually ignored in shock studies; 2) the pressure transformation wave for the driver of 200 kbars; and 3) the driving shock wave of 270 kbars pressure. Metallurgical determination of the angular twin distribution, shown in Fig. 3, with respect to the shock direction and the shock rarefaction direction (which was 23 deg from the shock direction) showed that twinning took place

Mining law has developed in Great Britain (GB) over centuries, mainly in response to lessons learned after disasters and other major incidents. This has led to a culture of preventing repeat accidents, rather than predicting and controlling unsafe acts or conditions.This paper explains how, initially in response to a government drive to reduce the burden on industry, the opportunity was taken to review and reform all 48 sets of GB mining-specific law into a single document. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the unit operation of grinding and the circulating load, of the unit operation of classification and the circulating load, and of the two superimposed into one operation to clarify the overall trend of events relating the circulating load to the capacity of the closed circuit grinding system, to the specific surface area of the final fine product, and to the energy consumption in the closed circuit grinding process. The capacity of the closed circuit is frequently, if not always, determined by the classifier, not by the mill." With these words a startling idea was expressed in 1934 by Dorr and Anable.1 Today, some 30 years later, grinding in closed circuit is universally accepted. The basic curve presenting the capacity factor versus circulating load by Dorr and Anable has obviously been so convincing that not a single authoritative investigation regarding its validity seems to have been conducted. The only major subject of discussion appears to have been the relative merits of the 'high' and 'low' circulating loads. It seems to be universally agreed that much still remains to be hoped for regarding sharpness of classification. BASIC CURVES FOR CONSTANT MILL LOADING Fig. 1 presents a series of basic curves for constant mill loadings in function of new feed rate and circulating load. The mill loading indicated by each curve is the sum of hourly tonnages of new feed and circulating load. For example, at point 0 where the new feed rate is 100 t/h and the circulating load 300%, or 300 t/h, the mill loading is 400 t/h. In closed circuit grinding, the new feed rate corresponds to the rate of finished classified material produced. Although at this stage the effect of classification is excluded in construction of the basic curves, the trend indicated by these curves is strongly in favor of closed circuit operation under relatively small circulating loads. A study of the curves reveals that, e.g., a mill operating under a load of 200 t/h at point P where the new feed rate is 50 t/h and the circulating load 300% will also operate under the same total load at point Q where the new feed rate is 100 t/h and the circulating load 100%. In other words, a reduction of circulating load from 300% to 100% would lead to doubling of the new feed rate and doubling of the rate of production of finished material, without a change in the total mill loading. The obvious question is, is it also possible by a reduction of the circulating load in a closed industrial grinding circuit to increase the production of finished classified material and, if so, how and to what extent? GRINDING TESTS BY DORR AND ANABLE In a series of open circuit grinding tests reported by Dorr and Anable1 limestone was ground at various feed rates in a 3-ft ball mill. The original data are reproduced in Table I. It can be seen that with the increased feed rate production of -65-mesh material increased and the energy consumption per unit weight of the -65-mesh product decreased in the reverse ratio. The data shown in Table I have been reproduced for our purposes in Table II for a scale corresponding to grinding in a large industrial mill. This reproduction

Optimisation of capital in the development process is critical to the profitability of any new mining venture. The process of optimisation should apply to all aspects, that is the financing, management, revenue, reporting and, of course, the development of the project. Unfortunately, too much emphasis has been placed on the optimisation of the financing or reporting aspects and too little on the project itself. This paper addresses the latter.
