The selective recovery of gold and silver from solutions containing other metals, such as copper, is possible using AuRIX«100 resin in conjunction with the Gekko Resin Column. Selectivity is driven by controlling the solution pH, which enables activities such as loading copper, gold and silver and then selectively stripping copper before gold and silver. Alternatively gold and silver can be loaded and the copper left in solution. The selective loading of gold while reducing the silver loading has also been demonstrated, opening the possibility of producing high grade gold dorT from high grade silver pregnant leach solutions. This paper reviews the AuRIX«100 resin and Gekko Resin Column Technologies, discusses the uses of AuRIX«100 in the recovery of gold and silver and the chemistry relating to several projects for which AuRIX«100 is being tested.

THE observation of the flow layers, or Lüders' lines, produced in mild steel when it is stressed into the plastic range often provides considerable useful information for the study of the fundamental mechanism of the plastic flow of metals. It is a commonly observed fact that as soon as the upper yield point in a mild-steel tensile-test bar is passed, an unstable condition develops in the equilibrium, the load on the testing machine drops and if the surface of the bar contains a thin mill scale, the latter begins to flake off rapidly along certain "lines." These "lines" are in reality traces of wedge-shaped flow layers and are formed by the inter-section of the surface of slip and the surface of the bar. The average plane of the flow layer itself has been found by various experimenters to be inclined at an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of the test bar. In a body of more complicated shape stressed in possibly a different man-ner, the tangent planes to the flow layers at each point seem in many cases to be inclined at an angle of about 45° to the principal stress direc-tions at the point. As examples of the latter may be mentioned the logarithmic spirals obtained when a rivet hole is punched in a thin plate, or when a tube is subjected to internal pressure only, etc. Hence if the flow layers are observed from an experiment, the shear-stress trajectories -the curves indicating the directions of the maximum shearing stresses in the body-may then be approximately determined. Since the latter curves form an orthogonal family inclined at 45° to the principal stress directions, the family of principal stress trajectories, or the curves indicating the directions of the principal stresses, may be thus obtained. Although the discontinuous type of stress-strain curve at the yield point is commonly observed with test bars of mild steel, more recent experiments have shown that this is by no means the only material exhibiting this interesting phenomenon. A similar effect has been observed in zinc and cadmium crystals, by Becker and Orowan;1 in duralumin and other aluminum alloys, by Dawidenkow, 2 Elm,3 Fell, and others; in copper and copper-alloy crystals, by Elam;5 in brass by Elam;5 in brass wires by deForest;6 in higher carbon steels, tungsten steel, and

Potassium-argon dating of the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic intermediate to acidic plutons and volcanic rocks of Arizona and northern Sonora demonstrates the existence of two distinct magmatic episodes. The earlier episode begins in late Campanian time and dies out before the middle Eocene. Following a quiescent period in middle and late Eocene time, magmatism increases in Oligocene time, becomes most intense at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary and dies out as the Pliocene is approached. Pliocene magmatism is primarily confined to extrusion of post-orogenic basalts. The late Mesozoic-early Cenozoic magmatic pulse is essentially confined within the limits of the classical Laramide orogeny (Laramie through Wasatch time). The mid-Tertiary pulse is contemporaneous with the mid-Tertiary Basin and Range orogeny. The Laramide provides an excellent specific example of Umbgrove's concept of the pulse of the earth and in general his concept appears to be meaningful. Copper porphyry mineralization is time-congruent with Laramide magmatism and there seems to be no doubt as to the existence of a genetic relationship between the two phenomena. Two origins are tenable: direct accumulation of the copper sulfides in the copper porphyry liquid magmatic environment; or, introduction of the mineral constituents entirely from a larger source magma when the host rock is already crystalline. Transgression and regression of the epicontinental seas provide an excellent indicator of orogeny and epeirogeny. There was an overall transgression of the epicontinental seas from early Triassic time through the Turonian epoch in early late-Cretaceous time. Thereafter, there is a relatively continuous regression of the seas until the present time. Both the earlier transgressive episode and the later retreat are intermpted by temporary but distinct reversals. These interruptions can be correlated with classical orogenies. There are six distinct orogenies so indicated in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic eras. These occur at approximately 35 to 40 m.y. intervals. The regression of the epicontinental seas following the Turonian epoch was contemporaneous with the deepening of the Pacific ocean basin over the Darwin Rise. As the Darwin Rise was collapsing the East Pacific Rise was being elevated. The Western United States, situated on the eastern flank of the East Pacific Rise, was upwarped and tilted toward the east. Epeirogeny is the primary consequence of processes that operate on a global scale. Orogeny is an exothennic process that is limited in space and is treated here as a secondary consequence of epeirogenic-initiated warping. The off-campus buildings of the University of Arizona Geochronology Laboratories rest on the volcanic rocks of Tumamoc Hill. From this hill, the observer may obtain a beautiful view of typical Basin and Range topography. The city of Tucson lies below, contained within the broad Santa Cruz basin and surrounded on all sides by characteristic NW-SE trending ranges towering as much as 7000 ft above the valley floor. Since the senior author arrived in Tucson eight years ago, a great deal more has been learned about the geochronology of this and neighboring basins and ranges. For example, the volcanic rocks underlying the laboratory at Tumamoc Hill were shown on the state geologic map as Quaternary basalt. A student of the senior author has demonstrated that the so-called basalts are in fact alkali-andesites (Halva, 1961), and we now know that these alkali-andesites or doreites (Mielke, 1965) are of early Miocene age rather than Quaternary age (Bikerman and Damon, 1965). Is it any wonder then that geologists disagree on the nature and time of Basin and Range volcanism, plutonism and tec-tonism? The plain fact is that few definitive Cenozoic fossil sites were available upon which to base a chronology and geologists were forced to guess the ages of rocks in order to achieve the semblance of a time classification. We have now made considerable progress in developing a K-Ar chronology for the volcanic and plutonic rocks of the Basin and Range (Bikerman, 1965; Damon and Bikerman, 1965; Damon et al, 1964 and 1965; Mauger et al, 1965). It is the purpose of this paper to point out the main features of this chronology and to discuss the relationship of magma-tism to orogeny-epeirogeny during post-Turonian time. Two types of native sulfur deposits have been found in Lechuguilla Cave: thin late-stage crusts and massive early- formed deposits. Most, if not all, of the crusts appear to have formed by remobilization of native sulfur contained within gypsum and sulfur masses. The process is occurring today and is slowly converting the sulfur to gypsum. The absence of primary gypsum or reductants in the cave indicates that the early-formed massive sulfur deposits did not form by in-place reduction of sulfate, which is the process that formed the commercial sulfur deposits in the Delaware basin. Instead, it appears that H2S dissolved in basinal brines was oxidized by oxygen in near-surface ground waters in the cave. Fluid- inclusion data, which suggest the presence of both fresh water and saline water as the sulfur formed, support this interpretation. Although individual sulfur deposits in Lechuguilla Cave are no more than several tens of metric tons, the abundance of secondary gypsum (as much as 10 meters thick) indicates that native sulfur may once have been much more extensive.

In the pyrometallurgical processes of copper concentrates, arsenic is preferentially concentrated in the dusts carried by the gases as a result of their volatility and subsequent condensation in the gas cleaning train. In this work results obtained by alkaline leaching of the dusts from Ministro Hales roasting plant, belonging to Codelco, are presented. For the Ministro Hales plant the alkaline leaching would be an alternative to the recirculation of dusts to the roasting furnace. The experimental study considered NaOH and NaOH plus NaHS leaching of two samples of dusts, with 4.24 and 2.55% arsenic respectively. The results show that it is feasible to extract 90% of the arsenic and 50% of the antimony at room temperature using only NaOH, and when the temperature increases to 95ºC, the extractions of As and Sb increase. Copper remains in the solid residue with less than 1% dissolution, and the NaOH net consumption was approximately 140 kg/t of dust. In leaching tests with NaOH + NaHS, two types of methods were tested, baking plus leaching with water and direct leaching with a NaOH+NaHS solution. With the second method arsenic extraction increased to 95% and copper dissolution was less than 0.01% at 85ºC, NaOH 100 g/L, NaHS 90 g/L, 1.5 h and L/S ratio of 5/1 (L/kg). The bismuth remains stable in the solid in all cases. INTRODUCTION The presence of arsenic in copper concentrates has increased with time and the environmental regulations are becoming increasingly more stringent. In concentrate treatment pyrometallurgical plants, most of the arsenic is volatilized condensing in the gas train and is collected along with the entrained solids to form the flue dusts. Under these conditions, in smelters of copper concentrates with high arsenic content, the dusts are being treated in hydrometallurgical plants to extract and stabilize the arsenic, which also means that most of the copper contained in the dust is co-extracted with the arsenic. This affects the recovery of copper in the smelter and an alternative such as the selective alkaline leaching of arsenic, would allow the copper from flue dust to be recovered.

When the National Forests were created, all lands embraced in their boundaries were exempted from all forms of entry, except mineral claims. Later, by Act of June 11, 1906, and as amended by Act of Aug. 10, 1912, provision was made allowing homesteads on areas chiefly valuable for agriculture and not necessary for the public use. Patents to mining claims in the Forests are granted the same as on land not in the Forests, irrespective of timber or other values. It is the policy to encourage the highest use of the Forests. As a business proposition, it is a good policy to have mines developed in the Forests. Their development in remote or inaccessible regions causes the country to be opened up and, in addition to the local market which the mines create, means of transportation are afforded to outside markets. No examination of mining claims is made until patent has been applied for, unless they are actively interfering with the administration of the Forest. In this case, an examination is made, and if there is evidence that the claims are being held in good faith they are in no way interfered with. Timber is never sold from a mining claim except with the consent of the claimant, or unless it is clearly shown, after an examination, that the claim is abandoned. In the case of fire-killed timber, which rapidly deteriorates by standing, a contract bond arrangement can be made for the sale of the timber which protects the interests of both the mining claimant and the government. The promiscuous locating of mining claims has in the past caused considerable trouble. It has been, and still is, the custom in some parts of the West to locate a mining claim when the surface rights of any particular area are desired, irrespective of the mineral character of the ground. This has been done to hold power sites, town sites, summer residences, springs, etc. When the ground is desired for any of these purposes, what is known as a Special Use Permit will be issued at a nominal sum, to legalize the occupancy. In most instances, it is far cheaper to take out one of these permits than to do the annual assessment work on a mining claim, but, of course, patent to the ground cannot be obtained in this manner. The main mineral constituents of phase-transformed chalcopyrite are CuS and FeS2. CuS is more soluble than FeS2 in an acidic CuCl2 solution with presence of excessive NaCl, so that FeS2 could be removed as solid residue from a leached solution. The experimental results showed that the efficiency of the copper leaching is heavily determined by the following two factors: a) The degree of the chalcopyrite phase transformation to CuS and FeS2 b)The concentration of Cl during the leaching, specifically whether there is enough excessive Cl existed. I t was found that when the Cl in the solution is not excessive, the slowest step of the leaching is the dissolution of Cu2Cl2.

The Fraser Range is composed dominantly of basic pyroxene granulites derived from basalts, many of which appear to have been vesicular and*pillowed. Acidic and basic garnet-bearing granulites are important in the west, and acidic granulites and narrow anortho- site layers are dominant in some regions east of the Fraser Range. An extensive flat-lying olivine gabbro sheet cuts the granulites, and in places has been converted to spinel-bearing meta-gabbros and pyroxene granulites. The granulites of the Fraser Range (Proterozoic) are separated from the gneisses and schists of the Goldfields regions (Archaean) by the Fraser Fault, over which there is a large gravity anomaly (gradient 20 milligals per mile). Some of the problems associated with the concentration of Cu, Ni, etc. liberated from mineral lattices during metamorphism, and other principles of metal concentration in granulite terranes, are discussed. The recognition of vesicular and pillowed zones, even though highly metamorphosed, is of fundamental importance.

The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.

Coal mining activity first began on the West Coast in 1864 and has since led to the exposure of large areas of coal and host rock to chemical weathering. These exposed abandoned workings have led to the formation of acid mine drainage, which flows into selected rivers and streams impacting on the natural environment. A previous study conducted for the West Coast Regional Council identified four catchments receiving mine drainage which had elevated arsenic concentrations. The aim of this research is to expand on this initial study by determining the spatial distribution and attenuation of the arsenic within the sediment and water column in each stream of concern. Cannel Creek is influenced from drainage from the Bellevue coal mine adit and exhibits a low pH of ~3, elevated sulfate concentrations and high arsenic and iron concentrations in the sediments. This pattern is repeated in the Rapid Stream and Soldiers Creek catchments, which are also affected by adit inflows from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Soldiers Creek also has significantly high arsenic in the waters, with an accompanying pH of ~5.5. Snowy River exhibits a similar trait with a pH also of ~5.5, but with very low sulfate concentrations. Arsenic concentrations in the waters are consistently around 30 ppb, with sediment concentrations up to 900 ppm. These sediment values might be partially attributable to the operation of the Snowy battery gold ore production facility, but the consistently high As concentrations in the water column and in the sediment upstream of the battery have an as yet unconfirmed source.

This brief paper is designed to place on record some interesting occurrences, recently observed during an examination of the Golden Age Mine, in Boulder county, Colorado. Leaving the little village of Jamestown—or Jimtown, as it is more generally called—located in the canon of James creek, the road winds up a steep mountain composed of the coarse gray granite, with occasional belts of gneiss, common to all the mineral-bearing sections of Boulder county, to the summit of the front range of the Continental Divide. Here are located the mines known as the Golden Age and the Sentinel, the relative locations of which are shown in Fig. 1. The Golden Age location covers the outcrop of a quartz-porphyry dike, which cuts through the granite country-rock with a strike of about N. 70' E. This dike varies in width from a few feet, as at a point between the main shaft and the Hill shaft, to about 50 feet,

INTRODUCTION The use of high pressure water as a means of excavating valuable mineral from the earth dates back many hundreds of years, but is most familiar through its use in sluicing the gold bearing deposits of California and Alaska. Interestingly, that practice, which dates back from at least 1852, is now nearly defunct with only one known surviving hydraulicking operation.(l) In that particular development water under a relatively low, natural pressure head is carried to a nozzle and from the nozzle it is thrown a distance of perhaps 20 ft to wash the gold bearing material down into a channel from whence it's carried over some mineral collector, and the water is then recirculated. Development of this practice in coal mining began in Russia in 1915, and Dr. Muchnik established the criteria for hydraulic mining during the 1930's. The first water jet mine was established underground in 1939 and has been followed by several larger mines to the present day where there are at least 11 large mines producing about 10 million tons of coal per year in the Soviet Union.(2) Water jet mining has expanded from Russia through Japan, Germany, Poland, Czekoslovakia, and mainland China. The nearest location to the United States is currently at the Kaiser Mine in Sparwood, British Columbia, where a three-man crew has mined up to 3,400 tons of coal in a 6-hr shift. There are many advantages to this particular operation. It is one of the safest mining operations for coal in Canada and has won safety awards because of this. The process is relatively cheap since the cost of the equipment is much lower than that which would be required conventionally using either longwall or shortwall mining, and transportation is achieved by fluming the coal to a central station using a gravity feed and then pumping to the surface, (3) For this

The longwall system with caving is the most common mining system in Polish Collieries and the extraction is carried out simultaneously on several levels and in different seams. The extent and diversity of the methane hazard occurring is strictly connected to the specific geological and gas conditions as well as to the applied mining methods. Taking these factors into consideration the following methane drainage methods are applied as additional means of combatting the methane hazard in Polish gassy coal mines: 1. predrainage by means of boreholes drilled from the surface, 2. predrainage from stone drivages and devel- opment workings, 3. degasification of coal extraction workings, and 4. degasification of sealed-off areas/old goaves. Predrainage gave satisfactory results when holes were drilled from the surface or from underground workings, but only to depths to 300 m. It was necessary to adapt methane drain- age methods to the geological and mining con- ditions as gassiness increased with depth. The results of methane capture, both pre- drainage and post drainage were obtained by investigating several gassy mines.

The first discovery of gold in Montana is credited to François Finlay, a half-breed, from the Red River country, in Canada; he went to California during the early days and learned there how to wash the gold from placer deposits; then, on his return, he crossed Montana and found gold on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, on Gold creek, a minor tributary of the Hell Gate river, in what is now Deer Lodge county. That was in 1852.* Finlay did not find enough gold to induce him to continue at work, but six years later a group of miners, led by the brothers James Stuart and Granville Stuart prospected on this same creek, obtaining about ten cents to the pan. They, however, were harassed by the Blackfeet Indians, and they were also handicapped by lack of proper tools; so they too desisted from further operations. Two years later, in 1860, Henry Thomas started to work on Gold creek with three sluice-boxes hewn out of green timber that he cut on the spot. With this simple apparatus he won from $1.50 to $2.00 per day. This may be considered the fist instance of systematic mining in Montana. Meanwhile the Stuarts went to Fort Bridger, in southwestern Wyoming, where they remained as traders until 1861, when, again lured by the gleam of gold, they returned to the valley of the Deer Lodge and resumed prospecting, using 10 sluice-boxes that were brought from Walla Walla, in Washington, 425 miles distant. A new understanding of the formation of black organic shales in the Illinois Basin has contributed to insights on how to produce methane from these complex reservoirs. These shales are far from simple shallow derived sediments but are in fact the result of a complex series of events which include the intermixing of volcanic detritus and the marine organic material, onlap successions and low energy turbiditic intraformational activity. This has led to a review of the commercial significance of the mid Devonian shales in the sedimentary basins of the eastern half of the USA. These shale sequences are also characterised by very little contribution from the underlying Lower Palaeozoic carbonate formations. The later diagenetic influences and the interaction of sea floor bacteria especially since the mid Devonian have lead to the creation of a major source of energy in the form of methane. Vast areas measured in 1000s of square kilometres are known to contain biogenically derived natural gas as methane. However, this vast resource produces very little gas due to abundance of illite which acts as a major adsorption mineral and creates a refractory situation where though there is abundant gas present the rate of release is clearly subeconomic. This paper will present the results of recent laboratory trials which have indicated that it is possible to create microfracturing using bacteria within the gas bearing shale sequence and also restart the methanogenesis process. As most coal bed methane environments have similar organically derived shales in direct relationship to the coal beds themselves then this paper has ramifications for this industry as well.

This work studies the variations of the electric current caused by the application of an electric field on marble samples when they are subjected to continuously increasing mechanical stress at a constant rate up to fracture. The external electric field is applied in a direction perpendicular to the applied mechanical stress. An increase of the level of the electric current was observed when micro-damages started to occur in the samples. The increase of the electric current was approximately 14%. Consequently, the current started to decay abruptly and the sample failed. This electric current recording is compared with the corresponding electric recording without applying the external electric field (Pressure Stimulated Current technique). Both recordings show similar qualitative characteristics. The most obvious of these characteristics are that the electric current starts to develop when microcrack structures start to form due to the externally applied stress. Both recordings show a maximum in the vicinity of fracture.

Beginning with the second paragraph in the second column of page 148, this paper should read: The Reynolds number in Fig. 6 was calculated from the inlet diam and it is evident from the graph that above NR = 5000 the value of K2 is as it should be, a constant. The data10 shown in Fig. 7 was obtained for fluids flowing in pipes of diam D with sharp edged orifices of diam d. To be consistent with the representation in Fig. 6 the Reynolds number was calculated with the orifice diam d. These two sets of data show similar patterns and the variation in the orifice coefficient C is believed to account for the variability of the cyclone coefficient K2. The values of C given in Table IV are derived from K2 by conversion of units. C more nearly represents an equivalent orifice coefficient for a cyclone. Armstrong1' showed that data reported by Chaston 12 and Elcox13 yielded values for C of 0.24 and 0.27, re- spectively, Dahlstrom's4 data gives a value of 0.22. As a consequence of the variability of the cyclone coefficient some caution must be exercised in substituting for Q in the split size equation.

In order to take full advantage of the use of manipulatable variables to effectively control the response of coal flotation circuits to disturbances and to optimize circuit performance, the effects of each manipulatable variable must be understood with respect to the mechanisms responsible for particle recovery. This paper pays particular attention to the critical role of the froth phase and its effect on circuit behavior and control and emphasizes that in order to optimize the separation of coal from gangue by flotation it is necessary to consider particle behavior in both the pulp and in the froth while developing a control strategy. Data obtained from the extensive sampling of the flotation circuits in two coal preparation plants are used to illustrate this concept; by showing first the effects of reagent addition levels on the mechanisms responsible for particle recovery and second how this information can be used for control strategy development.

The dependence of the electrical and crystalline properties of silicon containing ion implanted boron atoms have been studied as a function of the incident dose, substrate temperature, and annealing tempera-ture. Hall effect studies show that the compensation due to defects is negligible after annealing at and above 500°C for a dose of 1013 ions per sq cm. Steps occur in the isochronal annealing curve for the sheet resistance at 300°C and 800°C and the mechanisms responsible for these steps are discussed. The range of the ions at 150 kev is 3500 * 5001. Electron diffraction studies on samples implanted with 150 ker ions show the existence of damaged (polycrystalline) silicon closer to the surface than the range of the ions. Etching and subsequent annealing of etched and unetched specimens suggest that the poly crystalline silicon is closer to the surface than the bulk of the distribution of ions. THE purpose of this study is to investigate some electrical and crystalline properties of ion implanted boron in silicon. Sheet resistance, Hall measurement, depth distribution by chemical staining, thermal probe and electron diffraction have been used to study the properties of samples implanted in a random direction with ions having energy up to 150 kev. The boron-silicon system has been the subject of considerable study'-7 due to its possible application in the fabrication of electronic devices. The implanted ions produce considerable crystalline damage to the substrate crystal before they lose most of their primary energy and come to rest. Fortunately, most, if not all, of this damage can be removed by subsequent annealing or by holding the substrate at an elevated temperature during the implantation process. Sheet resistivity measurements of the p-type layers produced by boron implantation into room-temperature silicon, reveal that the annealing occurs in a two-step process: the first occurring at -300°C and the second at -800°C.' Electron-microscope and low-angle electron diffraction studies of this damaged material indicate that the bombarding ions produce an amorphous silicon region about the trajectory of each ion.' At high doses, these damaged regions overlap and an amorphous surface layer results. Furthermore, the 800°C annealing step, appears to be associated with the elimination of this gross damage. The depth distribution of the as-implanted and also the annealed samples have been studied by an angle lap and staining technique as well as by Hall measurements.3-7 We find the experimentally determined ranges of the boron are less than those calculated by the Lindhard-Scharff-Schiott theorys (hereafter referred to as the LSS theory). Our results are in essential agreement with pre- vious results. In addition, we have made Hall measurements on samples bombarded with a low dose (2 x 1013 ions per sq cm) to minimize impurity banding effects, and find that deep ionized levels influence the carrier concentration and room-temperature hole mobility until the sample is annealed at temperatures above 500°C. Above this temperature, the data corresponds to that obtained when silicon is doped with boron by conventional techniques. We have also made a depth distribution determination of the crystalline damage due to the implanted boron by using glancing angle electron diffraction techniques. It was found that the gross damage depth distribution of heavily implanted samples is closer to the surface than the depth distribution of the electrically active boron. By removing this gross damage, without affecting the distribution of the implanted boron, we have determined that the 800°C annealing stage is not exclusively due to the improvement in the crystalline perfection of the amorphous material but also appears to be associated with the annealing of some point defects. These results and their relation to previous results are discussed in the following sections.
