The Filblast Cyanidation Process incorporating intense high shear mixing, high gas mass transfer efficiency and high oxygen concentrations under conditions of elevated pressure has now been been successfully applied in gold cyanidation mills since May 1993. The first commercial unit had a slurry capacity of 110 cubic metres per hour. Since then 230 and 450 cubic metre per hour units have been installed and a 1,000 cubic metre per hour unit has been designed. Laboratory and pilot plant Filblasts have also been built. The reactor is a robust, compact in-line or end-of-line device and may be constructed out of a wide range of materials including wear and corrosion resistant alloys and ceramics. The Filblast Process may be applied to high temperature leaching of refractory gold ores and base metal concentrates. The development and application of the Filblast Gas Shear Reactor as a cyanidation tool has removed the constraints of plant size in cyanidation applications in mobile or readily transportable gold plants. A 250,000 tonne per annum fully modularised gold ore treatment plant with the Filblast and AARL Pump Cell as core technologies is nearing completion. This plant includes several novel features which are predicted to achieve widespread adaptation in modem cyanidation plants. This paper presents a briefreview of the development of the technology and the principles incorporated in the Filblast system. A number of case studies are presented which show significant financial benefits due to more efficient reagent utilisation, higher recovery and increased through-put.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Considerations in the mine shaft layout, design, sinking, outfitting, testing and commissioning are set forth against the background of requirements of applicable parts of Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30.

Editor's note: This is the first of two articles on maintenance. Part two, "Effective maintenance downsizing techniques," will appear in the October issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Most mine managers are aware that the cost of maintenance rarely goes down unless work is done less often and with fewer people. Fewer people translates into downsizing and seldom means making maintenance more efficient. Even so, mines that have struggled unsuccessfully to improve maintenance and are now pressed to reduce maintenance costs may opt for downsizing. On the other hand, mines with an immediate need to reduce costs may be forced to downsize because they cannot wait for needed improvements to take effect. This can be bad news for maintenance. In any case, the mine must downsize correctly to ensure effective maintenance is sustained.

This Bureau of Mines report provides information on the first 49 water-flood projects (or units) in Nebraska. All injection was in the ?D? or "J" Cretaceous sands of western Nebraska. Specific data presented include location, map, discovery and development, water supply and injection, oil and water production, estimates of oil in place, primary and secondary recoveries. The 49 projects studied) including four dual-zone projects, should recover about 126.5 million barrels of oil. Eighty-six percent of the estimated oil had been recovered by the end of 1966. Abundant water was found near most projects.

The choice of a design concept for a bridge foundation is guided by various factors; several of these factors are indeed of technical origin, like the environmental conditions in a broad sense, but others non technical factors may also have a profound impact on the final design concept. The foundations solutions adopted for the Rion Antirion bridge are described and an attempt is made to pinpoint the major factors that have guided the final choices. The Rion Antirion bridge is exemplar in that respect: the foundation concept combines the simplicity of capacity design, the conceptual facility of construction and enhances the foundation safety. The design of these foundations was a very challenging task which required full cooperation and close interaction with all the parties involved: concessionaire, contractor, designers and design checker.

Analysis of the topography associated with large vertical strains measured in the upper crust in the Basin and Range and elsewhere in the US Cordillera shows that it varies systematically with upper crustal strain such that it decreases where tectonism has resulted in relative thinning. The magnitude of topographic deflection suggests that the amount of thickening or thinning of the upper crust cannot also be reflected in vertical motions of the Moho discontinuity, nor can the vertical strain be isostatically accommodated by inflow or outflow of asthenosphere, mantle lithosphere or mafic lower crust. Simple isostatic calculations show that the compensating medium had a density probably within 100-200 kg/m of average upper continental crust, thus indicating that the compensating medium lies within the crust and is probably in large part quartzose. This conclusion is in accord with laboratory experiments on the strengths of rocks, and with reflection seismograms in deformed regions which suggest that the Moho is generally flat beneath regions of extreme gradients in upper crustal vertical strain. The upper crust floats on a quartzose layer in the mid-crust which, under orogenic conditions, is apparently so weak that it behaves as a relatively inviscid fluid at geologic timescales (> 10,000 a) and subcontinental lengthscales (100-1000 km).

A matrix analysis of the differences between the camps and communities associated with the Britannia Mine is used to develop an analytical tool. The tool is intended to assist the mining industry as it embraces the many facets of sustainable development. A case study is used to support the identification of key factors that may predict the sustainability of a new mine town. Sustainable communities, like Britannia Beach, are discussed in the context of three pillars of sustainability: value of mining products to society; creating wealth; and, environmental integrity. A sustainable mine town may be viewed as a socio-economic asset as well as an asset to the mining industry.

Gas outbursts occur as sudden eruptions of gas and minerals from the face of a mine heading as the heading approaches potentially burst prone (or anomalous) zones of rock. Such outbursts have resulted in considerable damage to equipment, and in some cases lives have been lost. Characterizing these anomalous zones and detecting their presence is therefore vital to safe mining. Certain significant characteristics associated with the outburst-prone zones are: (1) the presence of fluid inclusions, (2) unstable stress conditions, (3) characteristic geologic structures, (4) certain physical properties of the rock, and (5) microseismic activity. Geophysical and engineering methods for detecting these characteristics are discussed and are considered with respect to their past success and future potential for predicting gas outbursts.

It has been pointed out by Stead1 that grains of considerable coarseness may be developed in steels containing from 3 to 5 per cent. of silicon, and in a previous paper2 the present author has shown that under the proper conditions of annealing single grains having an area of 50 sq. cm. may be obtained. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss in more detail the conditions promoting the growth of these grains, in the hope that the experiments described may throw some additional light upon the general problem of grain growth in metals. These silicon steels lend themselves particularly' well to such experiments because of the ease with which the change in structure may be followed and because of the fact that the effect of the carbon present is largely obliterated by the high percentage of silicon. This forms a solid solution with the iron, which acts very much like a pure metal. This alloy has been found to have but one critical point, viz., Ar2. This point, determined by Roberts-Austen for Hadfield's 4 per cent. Si alloy, was found to lie at 703" C. Vigouroux3, in working with pure Fe-Si alloys, finds this point to rise from 750" C. for 0.5 per cent. Si to 860" for 6 per cent. alloy, with a flat region in the curve from 3 to 4 per cent. Si. No accurate determination of this point has been undertaken by the present author, but it has been roughly determined to lie between 730" and 750:. In the preliminary experiments, some of which have been described in a previous paper, it was found that practically all of these steels, when annealed to 1,200" C. or higher, showed grains of comparatively large size. These grains varied in size, however, from about 4 sq. mm. to 50 sq. cm. (see Figs. 1 and 2) under the same conditions of anneal, and it was for the purpose of determining the cause of this difference in size that the experiments herein described were undertaken. Twin 1250 m (4100 ft.) long highway tunnels through Cumberland Mountain near Middlesboro, Kentucky are planned to be completed in the early 1990's. The tunnels will be excavated in sandstones, limestones, and shales, dipping at 35 to 50 degrees and striking nearly perpendicular to the tunnel alignment. In 1985-86 a pilot tunnel was excavated as a crown drift along the alignment of the southbound tunnel. The benefits of the pilot tunnel in reducing uncertainties for main tunnel construction are discussed. The cost-benefits of the pilot tunnel are examined in view of estimated main tunnel costs.

An 8,000-ft experimental field well was utilized to conduct flowing pressure gradient tests under conditions of continuous, multiphase flow through 2 3/8-in. OD tubing. The well was equipped with 10 gas-lift valves and 10 Maihak electronic pressure recorders, as well as instruments to accurately measure the surface pressure, temperature, volume of injected gas and fluid production. These tests were conducted for flow rates ranging from 75 to 936 B/D at various gas-liquid ratios from 105 to 9,433 scf/bbl. An expanding-orifice gas-lift valve allowed each flow rate to be produced with a range of controlled gas-liquid ratios. From these data an accurate pressure traverse has been constructed for various flow rates and for various gas-liquid ratios. A comparison of these tests to Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation indicates that deviations occur for certain ranges of flow rates and gas-liquid ratios. Numerous curves are presented illustrating the comparison of this correlation with the field data. Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation deviates some for low flow rates and, in particular, for gas-liquid ratios in excess of 3,000 scf/bbl. These deviations me believed to be mainly due to the friction-factor correlation. However, Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation gives excellent agreement in those ranges of higher density. This was as expected and predicted by Poettmann. He pointed out that their method was not intended to be extended to those ranges of low densities whereby an extreme reversal in curvature occurs.l As a result of these experimental tests, correlations using Poettmann and Carpenter's method were established between the friction factors and mass flow rates which are applicable for all gas-liquid ratios and flow rates. Definite changing flow patterns do not allow any one correlation to be accurate for all ranges of flow. INTRODUCTION The ability to analytically predict the pressure at any point in a flow string is essential in determining optimum production string dimensions and in the design of gas-lift installations. This information is also invaluable in predicting bottom-hole pressures in flowing wells. Although this problem is not new to industry, it has by no means been solved completely for all types of flow conditions. Versluys,2 Uren, et al, 3 Gosline,4 May,5 and Moore, et al,6,7 were all early investigators of multiphase flow through vertical conduits. However, all of these investigations and proposed methods were very limited as to their range of application. Likewise, many are extremely complicated and therefore not very useful in the field. Only in the last decade have any significant methods been proposed which are generally applicable. The most widely accepted procedure in industry at the present time is a semi-empirical method developed from an energy balance, proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter8 in 1952. Their correlation is based on actual pressure measurements from field wells. Accurate predictions from this correlation are limited to high flow rates and low gas-liquid ratios. Although this method will be discussed in detail later, it should be pointed out that two important parameters, namely the gas-liquid ratio and the viscosity, were omitted in their correlation. The viscosity was justifiably omitted since their data was in the highly turbulent flow region for both phases, and most wells fall in this category. The gas-liquid ratio was incorporated to some extent in the gas-density term. In 1954, Gilbert9 presented numerous pressure gradient curves obtained from field data for various flow rates and gas-liquid ratios for the determination of optimum flow strings. However, no method is presented for predicting pressure gradients except by comparison to these curves. Baxendell, et al,10 proposed a method based on Poettmann and Carpenter's procedure

The Auscoke project has reached-a stage where a pilot plant nominally able to produce 100 t.p.d. of coked briquettes is being brought on stream during Nov. 1971 . The targets for this stage of the project are to establish the technological and economic value of Auscoke for the iron blast furnace, and to verify the commercial feasibility of large scale plants. The project originated at the B.H.P. Central Research Laboratories (C.R.L.) and work to date has shown that using a two stage contin- uous process, strong large coke can be produced at good productivities from medium or low volatile poorly caking coals. General features of the pilot plant and processing are discussed.

"Lead alloys electro-winning from chloride melts was under investigation. Impurities concentration in cathode lead is strongly depended on temperature, electrolyte composition, anode current density. The equilibrium electrode potentials of lead-antimony alloys with the various content of electropositive metal in the alloy were investigated in the wide temperature interval. Thermodynamic properties of Pb-Sb alloys containing 20-95 mol% of Pb were studied by EMF method in temperature interval 723-873K in molten mixture of potassium and lead chlorides. Partial and integral thermodynamic characteristics were calculated. Small negative deviations from Raul’s law were found. Anode processes were investigated. The lead dissolution was found to be the only process in certain interval of current densities and electropositive metal content in alloy.IntroductionAt present human race is facing the problem of pollution by lead and its compounds and also the pollution influence on population health all over the world. One of the solution ways is the recycling lead containing technical wastes by ecologically clean technologies.World scientific community pays much attention to the electrolysis of molten salts. The usage of salt mixtures, as electrolytes, discovers new possibilities in the production of metals, metal compounds and alloys. ?????????? of the electrolysis at the temperature 50 - 200 °? above the melting temperature of chosen salt mixture allow to unbreaks processes, that undergo in the pre-electrode layer. The rate of the electrodepositing of elements are much higher than in the water electrolytes. At present there are technologies developed for production of metals (Ta, Nb, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ca, Al, Mg, Be, Li and others) by the electrolysis of the melts. Electrolysis of melts might be used in order to convert different technological formations containing lead and other nonferrous metals, that produced by different enterprises. According to the level of the influence on the living organisms lead is in the group of highly dangerous substances alongside with arsenic, cadmium, mercury, selenium, zinc, etc. Toxity and ability to accumulate in the human organism are two main sources of danger for the human being."

This paper presents a partial compilation of adopted measures of waste rock dump closures at mine sites located in Canada and Alaska, where the climate includes cold winters. The paper also presents the selection process that was followed for some of those mine sites. Mining operations usually generate waste rock that can sometimes result in very large quantities. Additionally, the nature of the ore body and the host rock will often introduce environmental impacts. These impacts need to be managed not only during the operations but also in the long term. Mine closure plans consequently have to address the long term issues that sometimes require perpetual treatment. Closure planning often involves the evaluation of risks associated with environmental and financial liabilities. It needs to consider the science, some common definition of objectives, and there will be a need to manage resources and schedules. Closure planning is essentially an exercise in constrained decision making. A performance and risk based ranking matrix is often developed during this selection process to identify the preferred option(s). The case studies presented in this paper provides a few examples. The level of knowledge on acid rock drainage from waste rock dumps has increased considerably over the past decades. It did not necessarily increase the level of complexity of the adopted closure methods, as the selected closure methods are often kept simple. A common approach consists of stabilising the slopes of the waste rock dumps material by resloping and then covering the waste rock with a growth media to support vegetation. Such covers prevent direct contact of animals with the waste rock material, minimise erosion and reduce infiltration to various degrees. The inclusion of water treatment is obviously dependent on the water quality being released.

"In Italian building market one of the reasons that often stop building contractors from not taking into consideration the possibility to recycle rubble from building is represented by the increase of costs for rubble separation. However the recycling of C&DW can also allow a decrease in disposal costs and a reduction in raw materials requirement.In this paper the results of a testing conducted on a case study through economic and technical analyses are presented.Results highlight that a wise management of demolition and disposal processes can generate a remarkable saving and that it is possible, on the other side, to achieve environmental benefits such as reduction of raw material consumption and dump life lengthening.IntroductionTwo major factors have been found to have considerably influenced the market of recycled aggregates in Europe and Italy: the EU and national regulations and environmental awareness. The market of recycled aggregate has grown in countries with limited natural resources.Waste disposal has also been one of the top EU political and environmental priorities. In the complex interaction between human activities and the environment, waste is proved to be one of the most environment-degrading products.In 1972 the European Commission introduced measures on waste reduction, reuse and recycling. In 2006, directive 2006/12/EC (European Commission) on waste was issued. It covers the scope of minimizing the waste, prevent hazardous waste, maximize reclamation, reuse, recycling and energy-recovery.No specific directive refers to management and recycling of construction and demolition wastes. However, in 1992 the European Commission listed debris among waste management priorities because of its growing amount.Only recently, effective environmental policies have been implemented in Italy, even though relevant environmental issues started rising as early as the beginning of the 1970s. In the 1980s the Government undertook the first significant measures to handle the waste management."

DuriKg the past two or three years I have seen statements regarding the first discovery of fullers' earth in this country that seem to require correction or modification. One appears again in the Mineral Resources of the United States for 1909, part II., p. 738, where it is said that 'fullers' earth was firat discovered in the United States at Quincy, Fla., in 1893." In this connection the following bit of unpublished history concerning fullers' earth in the State of Arkansas is worthy of attention. In April, 1891, when I was State Geologist of Arkansas, a Swede named John Olsen, formerly a copper-miner in Michigan, but then living south of Little Rock, brought me a sample of what he thought mas fullers' earth. He reported that it was from near the town of Alexander, the locality being 1 S. 13 W., section 8, SW. quarter of the SE. quarter. My chemist, Dr. R. N. This study deals with underground mines and ground control and the prediction of seats strength characteristics based upon ultrasonic logging. Exploration drill holes, both rotary and core holes are used for proving coal reserves and determining mining parameters. Drill hole cores can be subjected to geologic study and geotechnical evaluation. In addition, the use of geophysical logging techniques is well established in determining certain strata characteristics and ground parameters. Since the characterization of the rock mass in mines remains insufficient in most cases, the idea of possibly characterizing the strength parameters without expensive core retrieval and laboratory testing is very attractive. The elastic properties of the rock can be deduced from measurement of the sonic velocity if the density is known. Through the use of in-hole geophysical density logging combined with an ultrasonic logging tool, the estimation of strata properties is possible. An investigation was conducted at two Indiana underground coal mines using geologic logging, geophysical logging, ultrasonic logging and laboratory strength testing to establish the strength properties of the roof rock. A specialized ultrasonic logging tool with one transmitter and two receivers enables nearly continuous readings along the length of the hole. The results of correlating portions of the data are presented. It is anticipated that the ultrasonic logging will be a supplemental tool for extending laterally the strata characteristics obtained from the existing program to surrounding areas. This may be obtained from the relatively inexpensive logging data obtained by ultrasonic logging.

Climate change is occurring, and owners/agencies are seeing the impact of warming temperatures and extreme weather on landslides and other geohazards across the globe. Asset management is becoming more important and more challenging with the rapidly changing environment.  State and Federal agencies need to collaborate and partner on new ways to address these challenges; design of one-size-fits-all engineering solutions won’t work effectively anymore.  Alaska is an obvious nexus of these issues as the state is experiencing observable and measurable impacts from climate change in real time.  Landslides and climate (as well as resilience) are significant administration priorities, and there is benefit in understanding how other agencies are approaching today’s challenges.  These topics were explored at a peer exchange meeting in Alaska in 2023.  Key takeaway from that exchange include: the need to understand the inventory of hazards; the context of each agency, which provides key differences in strategy, policies, and priorities; the constraints that will drive risk reduction versus risk mitigation; the need to evaluate the entire system and not look at each individual hazard; and the criticality of relationships across organizational boundaries – no one agency can solve these challenges on their own.  Strategies used by various agencies in Alaska can inform practices in other regional settings with their own distinct climate and extreme event challenges and project characteristics.

In the manufacture by the Bessemer process of soft steel suitable for rolling into fine sheets, tubes and 60 forth, a difficulty is sometimes met with, in the tendency of this kind of metal to rise violently and boil in the moulds while being cast; this results in hollow-topped ingots, and consequently in an undue amount of scrap in the subsequent rolling. It has been noticed that this peculiarity does not pertain to all pig-irons, some grades producing a blown metal which pours quietly, while others, in whatever way the blow may have been conducted, give a metal which rises in the moulds, accompanied by the evolution of large quantities of hydrogen and carbonic oxide gases, and requiring a long time to solidify.
