The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand own and operate an opencut mine supplying coal to on-site power stations at Mae Moh, 600 km North of Bangkok. The mine is being expanded from an annual production of 1.5 million tonnes per year in 1982 to over 9.5 million tonnes per year by 1991. The mine will be amongst the largest open pit operations in the world. It is technically difficult to operate and plan due to complex geology, weak strata and surface constraints including reservoirs, forests and traditional villages. This paper presents a case study of mine planning for the above project including associated collection and processing of geological and geotechnical information. The existing operation is described, as well as the strategy adopted for the mine at expanded production. The planning covers various phases of mine planning including a Conceptual Study, a Definitive Study and detailed short term planning. Each stage incorporated new information and reflected a higher level of confidence in the data and resulting plan. Sophisticated computer techniques were required including geological modelling, calculation of volumes, geotechnical analysis, scheduling and costing. The planning was undertaken on site by a team of Australian and Thai Engineers as part of the Thailand-Australia Lignite Mines Development Project which is a four year programme of assistance funded by the Australian Government.

It has been worked since 1884-first for, silver, then for silver and lead, and at present for lead, silver, and zinc. No excuse seems necessary for placing before members even an imperfect report on the geological features of this notable ore deposit, since so little work has been done on the subject as to constitute almost a national reproach. This is the more deplorablesince the evidence laid open by mining operations is destroyed almost as soon as it is exposed, and there exists the real need of a continuous and connected record of geologieal developments.

Podiform chromitites are commonly found in the Moho transition zone to the mantle section of ophiolites, but have been very rarely found from the current ocean floor, even though some ophiolites are considered as a slice of oceanic lithosphere. One of the factors controlling podiform chromitite formation is the chemistry of host mantle peridotite; an intermediately refractory harzburgite is the optimum host for chromitites. This harzburgite represents the most common lithology of the oceanic lithosphere, where the peridotite-melt reaction, which is another condition, is possibly common there. The oceanic lithosphere mantle is thus a good host for podiform chromitites. The apparent rarity of documented oceanic chromitites is solely due to under-sampling of mantle materials from the fast-spreading ridge and the segment centre of slow-spreading ridges. Some ophiolitic chromitites formed not from genuine mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) but from wet MORB due to the situation of typical ophiolites, which formed not at ordinary mid-ocean ridges but at supra-subduction zone spreading centres.CITATION:Arai, S, 2015. In this work, preheating and roasting tests of pellets made from blends of Western Australia ultra-fine (WAU) magnetite concentrate and Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or Brazilian hematite concentrate were carried out. The results showed that pellets made from 100 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate possesses inferior preheating and roasting performance when preheating at 1050°C for 20 minutes and roasting at 1300°C for 40 minutes, the compressive strength of preheated and fired pellets is 502 N/pellet and 2313 N/pellet, respectively. When 40 per cent Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or 20 per cent Brazilian hematite concentrate was blended with 60 per cent or 80 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate, the appropriate preheating temperature of the pellets are reduced from 1050°C to 950°C and 975°C, and also the firing temperature of two types pellets are decreased from 1300°C to 1250°C and 1280°C respectively. Moreover, the compressive strength of fired pellets is obviously improved up to 2746 N/pellet and 2630 N/pellet respectively. Microstructure analysis of the fired pellets made from 100 per cent WAU shows its poor growth of Fe2O3 grains, low interlinkage degree of hematite grains, small size of crystallised grains and high porosity of pellet; however, the fired pellets that blended with domestic magnetite concentrate or with Brazilian hematite concentrate have fully growth of Fe2O3 grains, closer interlinkage of hematite grains, lower porosity and stronger consolidation. The rate of self-diffusion in silver single crystals during torsional strain was measured over a wide range of tenperatures and strain rates. The torsional strain was applied in a cyclic manner by reversing the divection of twist aftev a certain fraction of the total strain was reached. Surface roughening was substantially reduced in cyclically strained specimens compared with those strained entirely in one direction. Diffusion coefficients were determined using a special sectioning technique whereby slices could be removed parallel to the surface of a strained torsion specimen. The accuracy of the technique was first determined using roughened specinzens statically diffused to various penetration depths. Simultaneous strain-diffusion experiments were then performed over the temperature range 550' to 800 using strain rates of lo-' to 2.2 x 10' sec-'. The increase in silver self-diffusivity during torsional plastic strain was small. In only one case was the enhancement greater than twice the static value of the diffusion coefficzent. The enhancements increased slightly with decreasing tenzperature and increased with increasing strain rate. A dislocation pipe mechanism of enhancement was found to explain the present results satisfactorily. The magnitude of the enhancements and the tenzperatures at which they were observed suggests that a steady-state dislocation density of 10' to 109 dislocations cm-2 existed during the high-tempevature deformation. The diffusion coefficient in an fcc metal can be increased by 1) an excess concentration of point defects and 2) the rapid movement of diffusing atoms along grain boundaries and dislocations. Plastic deformation may be responsible for enhancements by both of these mechanisms. The results of simultaneous strain-diffusion experiments have caused a controversy over the magnitude of the effect of strain upon diffusion. Experiments reporting large enhancements have been criticized for the manner in which the diffusion coefficient was measured. Several of these experiments have been contradicted by other results obtained in a similar manner. No enhancement was reported by two investigators''' who performed their experiments at high temperatures where strain is expected to have little effect upon diffusion. A recent theoretical analysis3 indicates that strain enhancement by a vacancy mechanism will be small and exist only at low temperatures and rapid strain rates. It is doubtful whether any experiment has yet proven that strain enhancements can occur by an excess vacancy mechanism. In the present research, experiments were performed at extremes of temperature and strain rate in an attempt to measure enhancement of diffusion by strain. Self-diffusion of silver during torsional deformation was chosen since two separate investigations4j5 indicate that at least a small enhancement exists under these conditions. An accurate method of determining the diffusion coefficient, mechanical sectioning, was employed after a technique was devised to apply it to the roughened surface of a strained torsion specimen. First, the accuracy of the technique was determined for different penetrations (2fi). Then diffusion experiments were performed at temperatures between 550" and 800°C at strain rates of 10"" to 10"" per sec. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation of Specimens. The experimental procedure detailing the growth of crystals, their treatment, and the annealing techniques during straining are contained in earlier publications.496 The dimensions and orientations of the torsion specimens are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. licatiin of Torsional Strain. The torsion procedure was changed from that used previously. The specimens were strained in cycles to reduce the gross distortion and surface roughening inherent in twisting to high strains in one direction. For all strains above 0.30, the total surface strain was obtained as follows: the specimen was twisted to 0.10 strain in a clockwise direction; the direction was reversed; the backlash in the torsion apparatus was taken up; and the specimen was twisted in a counterclockwise direction through the initial starting point to 0.20 surface shear strain in the opposite direction. The strain reversal took no more than 1 min to accomplish. The total accumulated surface shear strain was arbitrarily taken as the sum of the 0.10 strain in the clockwise direction plus 0.20 in the counterclockwise direction. Although cyclic torsional strain was beneficial, surface roughening and specimen distortion were not entirely eliminated. The variation in the diameter at various points on the specimen was often much greater than the depth of the diffusion zone. Since serious errors might result if specimens were sectioned in the usual manner, a technique of lathe sectioning was devised to allow sections to be taken parallel to planes of equal concentration.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to correlate the information obtained during personal investigations at the sites of four rock tunnels in the process of construction and information obtained from the records and personal views of the constructors of two other tunnels that were not visited during the, excavation phase of construction and to present this information for the benefit of those who contemplate future construction of rock tunnels.Modern mechanized coal mining requires better, safer, properly alined haulageways and beltways; consequently, better understanding of tunneling methods by coal-mining men will be necessary. The possibility of future high-speed haulage systems utilizing rock tunnels in the more solid rock strata above or below the coal beds must not be discounted. In the past, tunnels have been driven for use in draining and unwatering inundated coal mines. At present, the need for such tunnels is very evident in some parts of the coal-mining regions, notably in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields, and studies along these lines are in progress. The average coal-mining man has little time or opportunity to visit tunnels while they are being exca-vated; therefore, it is hoped that this information will assist him in constructing tunnels safely if he is required to do so in the future.The tunnels described herein differ in size, shape, usage, and, in many instances, in their geological aspects. Full-face, heading and bench, and pilot-tunnel, and enlargement methods of excavation were utilized.The roof-support methods show diverse designs and materials of construction to suit each purpose and condition. The superiority of steel roof support over wood is demonstrated beyond doubt and is shown clearly in the photographs included in this circular.The illustrations (photographs taken by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Corps of Engineers, and others) show many of the necessary steps taken during the excavation and the erection of roof support in tunnels under construction."

INTRODUCTION The geology of porphyry copper deposits in the southern Cordilleran orogen is the subject of this chapter. The area considered extends northwest from southern Mexico to the Columbia volcanic plateau, the Cascade volcanic province, and the Idaho batholith. Transversely it is a belt some 800 km (500 miles) in width bounded on the west by the Sierra Nevada range. Included within this area are many large segments considered unfavorable for hosting porphyry copper deposits, which are mentioned in the text. The region and its porphyry copper deposits have probably been more intensely studied and reported in the literature than any other area in the world. This summary considers regional geologic controls that governed formation of porphyry copper deposits within this province. Geologic factors that influenced the mineralogy and metallogeny of the deposits are also examined. Discussions with H. R. Cornwall have greatly helped in writing this section. GEOLOGIC SETTING The geologic setting has been summarized by Anderson (1966), Burchfiel and Davis (1972), Rogers, et al. (1974), and Lowell (1974). No porphyry copper deposits in this area are known to be pre-Triassic, so Mesozoic and Tertiary events will be stressed. Figs. 40 and 41 show basic data believed most pertinent to the topic of porphyry copper deposits. Pre-Middle Jurassic: Figs. 40 and 41 contain the principal structural and crustal ele¬ments found in the Cordilleran orogen after Anderson (1966), Schmitt (1966), Coney (1972), Rogers, et al. (1974), and Lowell (1974, 1976), together with location of some of the more important porphyry copper deposits. The western limit of the Precambrian craton is shown in Fig. 40 (Rogers, et al., 1974). East of that limit the crustal environment through which the porphyry copper plutons ascended includes the Precambrian basement as well as varying thicknesses of Paleozoic shelf and platform accumulations. The northwestern and western portion of the southern Cordilleran orogen west of the Rogers, et al. (1974) limit of Precambrian basement has what Churkin (1974) calls a thin continental crust. Methylene blue dye adsorbs on chalcopyrite concentrates slurried in aqueous solution. Saturation adsorption can be achieved within about 24 hours for dye equilibrium concentrations greater than about 10-5 M. The dsorption coverage is obtained from a measurement of the' colour change of the solution. Comparison with BET measurement of the concentrate surface area shows that 2.4 ± 0.1 µmol of methylene blue are adsorbed per square metre of surface accessible to the dye cation. The procedure described can be used as a single-point measurement and values for the surface area can be otained to within about 10 per cent with inexpensive instrumentation.

This paper presents the development and application of a novel scaling technique that, when used with a streamline model, causes a "bundle" of one-dimensional (1-D) problems to reduce to a single 1-D calculation. The 1-D bundle is the streamline representation of a two-dimensional (2-D) problem. The 1-D calculation accounts for chemical-rock interactions and the streamline model for areal sweep. The scaling technique significantly reduces computation time, is readily modified to desktop calculations, and can be applied to both absorbing and reacting species. Two separate but closely related projects now under construction on the St. Lawrence River- the Seaway and the St. Lawrence Power Project- are providing the impetus for what may become one of the most significant economic expansions in the Northeast. By 1959, or even earlier, electric power will be flowing from the largest single hydroelectric installation east of the Rockies. Simultaneously there will come into existence a great new commercial waterway which will provide cheap transportation from the farm and industrial heartlands of the U. S. and Canada to the markets and resources of the world. When the Seaway is completed, vessels with five to ten times the capacity of those now using the Canadian canal system will be able to move from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior.

The equation of continuity for the hydrogen reduction of hematite in a fixed bed of closely-sized particles is solved assuming a flat velocity profile, negligible temperature gradients, md negligible axial diffusion. A kinetic expression from the literature is used which assumes the reduction process is controlled at the oxide-metal interface. The integral fractional conversion is computed, and the importance of particle diameter, flow mte, temperature, bulk axial diffusion, and inter- and intra-particle mass trarnsfer is predicted. Comparison with experimental data suggests one or more additional undefined variable(s) is significant. Equipment modifications are suggested for fidture experimentcll work. WITH the increasing desire to "design" the ore feed of a blast furnace, it has become necessary to define more quantitatively the process variables and to evaluate the extent of their control upon the reduction process. The bulk of the work reported in the literature has centered about the reduction of single particles; however, the blast furnace process more closely resembles reduction of a fixed bed than that of single particles. To simplify this analysis, the isothermal reduction by hydrogen of a natural hematite in a fixed bed of closely-sized particles is examined. With appropriate modifications in the kinetic and flow rate expressions, the approach employed should be extensible to mixtures of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and inert nitrogen, and to adi-abatic conditions, thus approaching the blast furnace process more closely. The fixed bed variables which are investigated in this study are particle diameter, flow rate, temperature, and bulk axial diffusion, as well as inter-and intra-particle mass transfer. Of particular interest is the effect of particle size upon fractional conversion for a bed operating under constant pressure drop. The constant pressure drop concept bears a close resemblance to the blast furnace process, where regions of larger particles may provide a greater permeability to divert most of the reducing gas flow from the regions of smaller ore particles. Under such conditions one would expect qualitatively that, for sufficiently small particle sizes where the flow rate is small and the total surface area is large, the reduction rate would be limited by the gas flow rate. Initially the gas entering the bed reacts very rapidly and the composition approaches the equilibrium conversion value a short distance from the reactor inlet. This concentration "wave-front" then moves up the bed as the flow of reducing gas is continued, leaving in its wake an ever increasing layer of reduced particles. Providing that the reducing gas leaves the bed at equilibrium concentrations, conversion is expected to increase with an increase in flow rate, and hence with an increase in particle diemater. Conversely, for sufficiently large particles the flow rate will be high but the surface area available for reaction will limit the reduction rate. Since the total surface area decreases with an increase in particle size, conversion, in this case, is expected to decrease as the particle diameter is increased. It is clear then that between these two extremes an optimum particle diameter must exist. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT Above the temperature where wiistite is stable (about 560°C) the reduction of hematite proceeds through the series Fe2O3/Fe3O4/FeO/Fe. On the basis of microstructural studies and earlier work, Edström1 has postulated a mechanism for the reduction of an ideal hematite lattice: 1) Iron phase formation at the boundary between wiistite, iron, and gas (for sufficiently porous iron). 2) Diffusion of iron across a wustite layer. 3) Phase boundary reaction of Fe3O4 to FeO. 4) Diffusion across a dense magnetite layer. 5) Phase-boundary reaction of Fe2O3 to Fe3O4. According to the mechanism postulated, gaseous reaction product has to be removed only at the boundaries between wüstite and iron or gas, the only possible exception being enveloped Fe3O4 specks. On this basis McKewan2,3 has proposed that one may consider the hematite reduction process as a simple two-phase system of oxide/metal. "In this paper, the reduction and separation behaviour of iron and slag in carbon composite iron ore pellets has been investigated experimentally using an electric resistance furnace simulating a rotary hearth furnace process. The factors that affect the formation of iron nuggets, such as temperature, holding time, molecular ratio of C/O and basicity, are discussed. Results show that the reduction of iron ore, carburisation of reduced iron and the composition and quantity of slag are very important for producing iron nuggets. Through optimisation of process parameters, iron nuggets can be formed below 1300¦C when holding time is 20 minutes, C/O is 0.7 and basicity less than 0.5. "Since the late 1970s, a major R&D program has been under way in Canada to assess the concept of disposing of nuclear fuel wastes in deep plutonic rock. Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd . (AECL), a federally-owned corporation, has been given the responsibility of directing this research (Rummery et al., 1983).The Underground Research Laboratory (URL), constructed in a granite pluton 15 km east of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba (Fig. 1) is a major component of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. A diverse geotechnical experimental program is being carried out during both the construction and operating phases of the URL. This program involves detailed geological mapping, rock mechanics and hydrogeology studies, and geophysical surveying, to characterize the rock mass surrounding the shaft, and it has been described by Simmons et al. (1983). As part of the construction-phase program, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys are being carried out during excavation, in an attempt to delineate fractures both ahead of the excavation and behind the walls of the excavation. This paper presents the results of surveys performed during shaft excavation and describes a procedure for plotting the data.Ulricksen (1982) cites examples of radar surveys to evaluate surficial deposits, such as peat, sands and gravels, and cavity detection in subsurface hard rock. Fowler (1981) used radar for fracture and clay vein detection in coal seams.In Canada, pioneering work in GPR has been done by Annan and Davis since the mid-seventies (Annan and Davies, 1976). Their work concentrated on problems relating to permafrost in the Arctic ."

Nearly every mining and metallurgical engineer will recall his early experience and method of producing step- or stage-reduction in preparing ore-samples for assay, in which he employecl idea, step- or stage-reduction simply because it was a self-evident fact that it would be easier to break coarse ore with a hammer than it would be to roll it back and forth under the muller, and alter having reduced it to a size easy for a rubbing or bucking division he then placed it under the muller on the bucking-board and further reduced it in proportion to the physical energy he wished to expend, which was generally the minimum to produce results. After this step in our experience me seem to have ceased to consider stage-reduction as mechanicallg essential, probably because it did not apply to individual exertion. Moreover, me did not retain the mass under the muller until it was all reduced to pass the 80-mesh assay-oftice screen, but practiced further step-reduction by screening out the fine in order that it should not interfere with subsequent work, replacing the coarse for further reduction on the bucking-board. It was many years after the bucking-board stage of metallurgical practice that we mere brought to a full realization that there was a more economical method in applying the crushing forces usually employed in metallurgical work by taking advantage of this individual experience and applying it to mechanical ends. We have made some advance to this end in bringing out the conical ball-and-pebble mill—a device which fairly well automatically adjusts power to the results obtained, mechanically repeating the bucking-board experience. In the action of the conical mill, theory is evolved from practice, rather than practice from theory, as is commonly the case.

In the last several decades, techniques of data collection have been rapidly evolving. Automated spectroscopic techniques in the chemical analysis of rocks for example have advanced to the point that we can analyze samples faster than we can grind them. Remote sensors of LANDSAT give us intensity measurements in four color bands of every acre of the U.S. every 19 days. Common depth point seismic instrumentation systems used at sea for surveying and networks of seismometers arrayed around the country for earthquake studies likewise are generating vast amounts of data. These along with many other earth science data generating systems have caused a veritable data explosion. How do we deal with these enormous amounts of geologic data presently being produced as well as those produced in the past, and to be produced in the future? There is an immediate need to acquire and utilize past and present basic data in order to address today's national earth science problems. Also data being collected and stored now must be compatible with future data in order for us to be able to undertake the wide spectrum of analysis that must be made in the future. This is a big order! In order to organize and to be able to analyze these data, the USGS has embarked on a wide ranging program of compatible data base construction and the development of computer technology, based on interactive computing, to facilitate resource assessments and analyses. These activities are analogous to two sides of a coin. One side deals with the logic, philosophy, and mechanics of information storage and retrieval; and the other side deals with the sensible application of computer technology to the treatment of data. Astute exploration on the northern Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, resulted in the discovery of the Toka Tindung, Pajajaran, Blambagan and Araren low-sulphidation quartz-adularia vein and stockwork gold-silver deposits. Combined, these deposits have estimated mineral resources in excess of I Moz gold at an average grade of 2.8 gAu/t and 7 gAg/t and are known as the Toka Tindung Gold Project. Gold typically occurs as fine grained electrum and is often associated with acanthite. The structurally controlled mineralised veins are hosted by Late Pliocene plagioclase and pyroxene-phyric basaltic andesite volcaniclastics and flows which form part of the Early Miocene to Pleistocene Sulawesi-East Mindanao Arc. Silica-adularia alteration dominates the volcaniclastic host of the Toka Tindung deposit. K-Ar dating of vein adularia indicates a 2.16 ¦ 0.04 Ma mineralisation age. Relatively narrow envelopes of silicification and argillisation surround the chalcedonic silica, quartz and adularia veins, stockworks and breccias at the other three deposits. Remnant hydrothermal breccias, chalcedony and anomalous arsenic, antimony and mercury indicate these gold deposits were part of a mineralised geothermal system.As of June 1997, Aurora Gold Ltd is finalising a feasibility study on exploitation of the four deposits and treatment of ore through a centrally located conventional CIP plant. Subsea tailings disposal is anticipated. Favourable metallurgy of the ore and logistics of the project area assist in minimising capital requirements.

Studies of benthic recolonization in the aftermath of marine aggregate dredging in the U.K. and elsewhere are limited and are largely confined to experimental circumstances. Investigations of the physical and biological status of licensed extraction sites in the U.K. at various times following cessation of commercial dredging are very limited, and so judgments as to the likely progress towards environmental restoration and the time-scales involved continue to be based on predictions rather than real data. This field-based research programme was commissioned to enhance the understanding of processes leading to physical and biological recovery of the seabed following dredging, thereby aiding the identification of practices to minimize environmental harm at licensed sites, and to promote rehabilitation on cessation. The outcome of survey work will have the notable benefit of allowing questions about the present status of locations hitherto subject to commercial exploitation to be answered directly, rather than by inference.

In concrete lined tunnels, formwork removal timing may be controversial. Contractors seek to strip the form as soon as possible, and designers seek to keep the formwork in place as long as practical to protect the fresh concrete. Formwork removal timing is normally specified as a function to its insitu concrete strength. This approach may work for smaller diameter tunnels, but fallacy occurs when applying this approach to larger diameter tunnels, since a larger diameter would experience more displacement than a smaller diameter tunnel from its own weight. Excessive deformation may fail a tunnel to meet its roundness criterion and overstress the lining causing cracking or falling from the crown. This paper presents a contractual mechanism to mitigate this issue.

A series of tension tests were performed on prototype scale steel pipe piles at two sites to evaluate the influence of scale and pile plugging on the unit skin friction developed in axial tension. The first site consisted of a clean medium dense fine sand above the water table. The second site consisted of a loose silty sand with the water table within about 0.5 m of the ground surface. Pile load tests performed at each of the sites included piles with diameters ranging from 73 mm to 114.3 mm, which may be considered driven "micropiles". At the first site, pile lengths of 6.1 m were used; at the second site, pile lengths of 9.1 m were used. Some of the piles were driven open-ended while others were fitted with a conical tip to form a closed end. During installation, pile plugging measurements were taken on the open-ended piles after each 0.30 m of penetration. The piles were allowed to rest for a period of about 30 days after driving prior to performing the axial uplift load tests to failure. The results indicate that in the medium dense fine sand the unit skin friction developed in tension is dependent on both the amount of plugging that occurs and on the size of the pile, which was not the case for the loose silty sand.

The critical resolved shear stress of aCu-A1 single crystals has been investigated as a function of composition, testing temperature, and strain rate. The strength, and its temperature and strain rate dependency increase markedly with aluminum content. The solid solution strengthening at 4.2°K is much larger than at room temperature. The activation energy for the low temperature dislocation cutting process increases from about 0.17 ev for a 0.5 at. pct A1 alloy to about 0.50 ev for a 14 at. pct A1 alloy. This result is attributed to an increase in the width of extended dislocations due to the known decrease in the stacking fault energy. In addition, the activation volumes at 4.2 and 77°K decrease with aluminum additions. Concerning the solid solution strengthening in the 296° to 373°K range, no definite conclusions are reached, but it is suggested that subgrains and cutting of subgrains are important. In a previous paper,' the authors reported that adding aluminum to copper produces two types of strengthening: a yield point effect and an increase in the lower yield stress. This behavior is illustrated in Fig. 1 by shear stress-shear strain curves of furnace-cooled single crystals of pure copper and Cu-14 at. pct A1. The yield point effect, At, was thoroughly studied previously1 and shown to be associated with short-range order. The present paper reports an investigation of the lower-yield stress in aCu-A1 single crystals as a function of composition, testing temperature, and strain rate.
