Explosive initiated afterblast dust explosions can occur in high sulfide ore mines when the flame generated by the detonating explosives ignites the sulfide dust produced from the blast, from previous blasting, or from other mining activities. The dust explosion can be a devastating, self-propagating fireball that will damage or consume any flammable object in its path. Damage to ventilation tubing is a frequent occurrence. These explosions also produce large quantities of sulfur dioxide and other noxious gases that can take several hours to clear from the mine. Thus, these occurrences can result in substantial losses in productivity to the mine.

In a recent paper, Gaudin and Meloy1 derived a size distribution function for single, impact fracture. Mular2 extended the use of this size distribution to describe the output of carefully controlled grinding experiments. As it stands, the function is difficult to compute. Consequently, a series of tables of the function are presented below: where M(x) is the cumulative fraction finer than size x when x is particle size. Weight percents are tabulated for the single parameter, r, in three different size ranges: from 0 to 1, from 1 to 10 and from 10 to 100. Tables I, II and III are cumulative percent finer and Tables IV, V and VI are for weight percent passing screen size x, retained on the screen below. A flexible expert system for a personal computer has been developed to take countermeasures for prevention of emergency in underground coal mines. The system makes a diagram to estimate maximum airflow rate of a specified branch such as coal face or advancing face, etc. under the conditions of opening regulators set in any two different branches, by computer simulation. The system approximates the ventilating condition underground by using both measured values and safety factor derived from the rules in the system. The probability of happening gas explosion, spontaneous combustion and mine fire underground is shown on a display and countermeasures in a data base in the system are selected according to a confidence factor. When it is recognized in the system that either safety factor or confidence factor of countermeasure has a small value, the system sends information relating to reasoning in the system to registered human experts by computer communi¬cation and facsimile. The replies in file transfer from the experts are stored in the system and reconsultations for estimation of underground condition are started automatically. As the replies in facsimile are shown on the display, user inputs new rules and, values for reconsultation. It is shown that the system is available to take better countermeasures as the condition' of a network in coal mine is changed by mining day by day.

The mineral resources of Hamersley Iron are structurally complex with fluctuations in mineral chemistry. Besides orebody charact- eristics, mineral recovery is also affected by stringent product quality demands from the competititve steel industry. Under such conditions, a geological ore reserve estimate has little meaning because it is unqualified and presupposes the defini- tion of ore. A system was developed in Hamersley - the Mine Planning Technique - to optimise recovery from available resources. This incremental planning method reduces a geological reserve statement into a simple, logical sequence of events. While there are limitations in the method used, the benefits are enormous. Among its' numerous applications, the schedule - the end product of the technique - plays an important role at Management level in decision making and policy formulation on all aspects of resource exploitation.

The habit plane of proeutectoid cementute precipitated from austenite was studied using a two-trace surface (analysis coupled with a direct X-ray back-reflection determination of the orientatzon of the parent Matrix. The results were the same as those obtained by earlier workers1 - 2 who used Indirect methods to determine the orientation of the matrix. The data indicate that a range or habit planes in the parent phase is operative which is not in agreement with accepted existing theories. In 1933, Mehl, Barrett. and smith1 obtained a non-unique result in a study of the Widmanstätten habit plane of proeutectoid cementite. Their data are shown in Fig. 1. These results were verified by Greninger and Troiano,2 although they did not pre-sent any data. Both of these investigations relied upon indirect methods of determination of the matrix lattice orientation. Theoretical considerations of Widmanstatten precipitates have usually proved or assumed an orientation relationship between matrix and precipitate; the habit plane expressed relative to the matrix is generally unique, although it may be irrational.3 Opinion is divided as to the factors influencing the choice of habit plane. With some two-thirds of the production exported, coal mining prac- tices of the last few years in Australia have been much influenced by the decline in the price received. It became essential to improve efficiency and rationalise operations. Trends in underground practice vary. On the one hand many additional longwalls have been installed and most recently the results achieved by them have shown a significant up-turn; this may be correlated more with increases in equipment capacity than with utilisation which has altered little during the past six years. Varied constraints remain affecting cur- rent and future longwall operations. On the other hand a number of mines have been closed whilst others have sought to improve results by various installations including miniwalls, shortwalls, and use of continuous haulage and mobile breaker line sup- ports. All mines continue to review working practices.

ANALYTICAL results have previously been presented for the diffusion-controlled solution of a second phase in a finite medium for planar, cylindrical, and spherical geometries.' These results were obtained by numerical methods using digital computer techniques and are applicable not only to the stage of the problem where the unstable phase shrinks to zero size, but also the subsequent stage where the concentration gradients in the matrix phase become negligible (essentially complete homogenization). Changes in prices and costs change the mineable grade and the profitabil- ity of an ore reserve. In a static world the grade required for an ore reserve is measured by the ratio: Cost/tonne of ore x 100 Price received/tonne of product and profitability by the ratio:- Price received/tonne of product Cost/tonne of product If the words cost and price refer to average cost and average price over some suitable period, say 3 to 5 years, the above ratios express the convent- ional wisdom of the mining engineer, and assume there will be no change in technology or politics.

The West Indies are the summits of a submerged mountain chain, the continuation of which must be sought in the mountains of central Honduras. In Haiti, the chain divides, one branch passing through Jamaica and the other through Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Misteriosa bank. Suess divides the West Indies into three zones: The first zone is entirely of volcanic origin and includes many recent volcanic cones. It includes the arcuate string of islands, which extends from Saba and St. Kitts to the Grenadines and Grenada. The western half of Guadeloupe belongs to this group. The second zone consists of a geanticline, of which the sedimentary rocks range from the Jurassic to the Quaternary, but consist chiefly of Lower Tertiary sediments. In the west it is broad, including the whole of the Greater Antilles; but in the east it is restricted to a narrow belt, which includes the Virgin Islands (except Anegada), Anguilla, St. Bartholomew, Antigua, the eastern part of Guadeloupe and part of Barbados. The islands that compose the third zone are flat and low. Like the second, this zone is broad in the west and narrow in the east; it includes the Bahamas, Anegada, Sombrero, Barbuda, and part of Barbados. Geologically, Florida and the plain of Yucatan may be regarded as belonging to it. Trinidad and Tobago, though geographically adjacent to the Lesser Antilles, are geologically a detached part of the South American continent. The crystalline complexes of northern Trinidad and of Barbados are a continuation, en echelon, of the crystalline axis of the promontory of Paria. The folded Cretaceous and Tertiary of the central and southern parts of Trinidad represent a continuation of the folded sedinlents of the Paria district of Venezuela. Cyanidation processes for the extraction of gold or silver frequently involve the processing of sulfur-containing solids which react with cyanide to form thiocyanate. The formation of thiocyanate is an undesired side-reaction, and in many cases thiocyanate formation results in a prohibitively high cyanide consumption. With the increasing number of gold and silver mining projects which involve the processing of sulfide ores or concentrates or which utilize a biological sulfur oxidation process, more attention has been focused on minimizing thiocyanate formation and in treating solutions to eliminate toxicity associated with thiocyanate. Though not yet commercially applied, there are several technologies available to recover cyanide from thiocyanate to both reduce tailings toxicity and allow the reuse of cyanide otherwise lost to thiocyanate formation. This paper presents an overview of technologies available for recovering cyanide from thiocyanate along with estimated operating costs for the technologies. Pilot testing data suggests that in some cases, cyanide can be recovered from thiocyanate for approximately the same cost as newly purchased cyanide.

PART I-PREPARATION OP METALLIC SINGLE CRYSTALS WITH ESPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINGLE CRYSTALS OP ZINC? As metals and alloys are composed, of, an aggregate of allotriomorphic crystals or grains, each possessing an individual orientation, the physical characteristics of a metal or an alloy are closely related to the properties of the individual crystals. The preparation and study of single metallic crystals are, therefore, matters of considerable importance. The advent of the X-ray spectrograph as a valuable metallurgical tool has magnified the importance of this subject, because the interpretation of some X-ray spectrographs is difficult unless single crystals are used in these studies. PREVIOUS WORK The first paper, as far as the writer knows, on the behavior or preparation of single crystals of metals is by Baker.1 He describes the behavior of extruded wires of sodium and potassium. These wires, when pulled in tension, instead of I showing the usual conical fracture common to most metals, had a chisel-shaped fracture when they were broken. I and II, Fig. 1, have a similar fracture. Baker checked his results by preparing single crystal wires from molten sodium and potassium and observing their properties. He prepared the wires by filling glass tubes, under oil, with the molten metal. The surfaces of the strained wires showed slip bands of remarkable clearness of which photographs are shown in his paper. He concluded that these wires were single crystals and "that the portions of the metal brought into play are cubes. Such cubes, when placed so that a plane through 'two opposite edges was parallel to the axis of the wire, would allow of lateral contraction by faces gliding over one another in one direction only and not in the direction at right angles."

The introduction of mechanized mining has created a demand for long working faces. It has also prompted mining men to contest the old theory that longwall methods can be used only where roof conditions are ideal and where pack-wall material is plentiful. "Longwall" as used in this paper means "modified longwall," "semi-longwall," or any of the various ''wall" or "long-face" methods of mining. Many mines are now using long conveyor faces that differ only in their methods of development, types of roof support and method of loading coal onto the conveyor. Some types of longwall operations are being carried on successfully under conditions heretofore considered impossible by men experienced in longwall mining. With possibly one or two exceptions, long-face methods in Alabama are a direct result of the need for lower mining costs. The advantages over room-and-pillar systems were clearly expressed in an article by Messrs. Fies and Lacy of the DeBardeleben Coal Corporation1 as follows: (1) increased tonnage per miner; (2) increased percentage of lump coal; (3) reduction in cost of development; (4) elimination of the cost of room yardage; (5) reduction in the cost of haulage, from ability to use larger cars; (6) reduction in the cost of machine cutting; (7) reduction in cost for tracks; (8) reduction in the cost of deadwork; (9) reduction in the cost of supervision. An attempt on the part of the operator to gain these advantages by changing from room-and-pillar to longwall requires considerable courage, and credit should be given to those men who have done their bit to meet the competition of rival fuels. Surface subsidence has been recognized as an inevitable consequence of underground coal mining for several centuries. The damage resulting from this phenomenon has been witnessed in rural as well as in urban areas and ranges from simple land settlement to severe structural damage to buildings. Subsidence prevention is not feasible, at least under the existing technological and economic constraints of underground coal mining. Using a rational method of subsidence prediction, it has been demonstrated in many coalfields that subsidence control can be successfully practiced in order to reduce and accommodate subsidence within environmentally acceptable levels. This paper presents the development and testing of a subsidence model, based on the zone area method. This technique is a refined development of the influence functions and it is capable of investigating a mining plan of any shape, thus facilitating both longwall and room-and-pillar mining systems. More specifically, this study can be divided into two major efforts: (a) The development of the zone area model. This formulation was designed to accommodate the analysis of an optimum number of zones, over the area of interest, both accurately and efficiently. (b) The testing of the computer techniques with appropriate field measurements. In order to accomplish this, published as well as unpublished information was collected and analyzed according to a regionalized scheme. This procedure minimized differences in subsidence characteristics between the various coalfields and allowed a regional validation of the predictive capabilities of the model.

AT Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse lime-rock. While oversize material was crushed through %-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity. Prior to 1938 the relative proportions of zinc receipts were low and extraneous flux requirements at a minimum. However, subsequent war-inflated zinc demands brought marked increase in fine concentrate and slimy zinc leach residue receipts and an abrupt introduction to smelting a more refractory zinciferous charge. The higher temperature demands of the more refractory zinciferous charge required a higher smelting column and the higher column, in turn, rendered the blast furnace less receptive to improperly prepared feed. Inadequate presinter processing facilities prevented the production of acceptable sinter, and blast furnace production declined to 50 pct of former capacity. In view of a prevailing contention among lead metallurgists as to the deleterious action of high zinc slag on blast furnace capacity, it was natural to overstress this factor and to concentrate on possible changes in furnace design. Brazilian amethyst production is mostly obtained from underground mines in the southernmost part of the country, involving approximately 6000 miners and generating an income of US$ 20 million per year. Amethyst-bearing geodes are hosted by Cretaceous continental flood basalts of the Serra Geral Formation. The economic zone occurs in the massive (colonnade) intermediary section of the Sao Gabriel Basalto. The tunnels and stopes follow the occurrence of geodes leading to an erratic and complex layout. A ground control survey revealed excessive roof convergence. Topographic results show excessive roof deformation and some roof falls have already been reported. To understand the ground conditions, prevent roof falls and better define the pillar dimensions detailed geomechanical mapping was carried out using the scanline method. Uniaxial compressive strength tests provided complementary information for rock mass classification. Results of the geomechanical classification were used to modify the mining layout taking into account the roof and pillar geomechanical characteristics. Retreat pillar mining minimised ground instability.

Resin based grouts are the main form of rock bolt anchorage in the underground coal industry in Australia and New Zealand. To be effective, the system requires the mixing of the catalyst and mastic components of the resin, as well as shredding of the laminate cartridge that contains the resin. An unknown measure is the load transfer characteristics of a bolt where the resin is well mixed but remains encased in the cartridge (gloved). Laboratory and in situ field investigations have been undertaken to quantify the performance loss due to mixed gloved bolts. This work showed repeatable results, indicating serious performance loss of the gloved and mixed system, with load transfer approximately 10- 15% of a non-gloved system (MacGregor, 2004). The in situ testing has demonstrated the relationship between the adhesion qualities of the resin and the mechanical interlock generated by radial confinement with progressively increasing tensile load. Effective load transfer is defined by the ability of the system to sustain shear stress on the bolt hole wall.

As originally conceived, this paper was to address the costs of environmental compliance, focus on environmental impact statements, and describe how those costs impact mining projects. The intent was to do wide ranging mathematical analyses to demonstrate the varying impacts on mining projects depending on their size, timing, return on investment and other salient project features. The initial portion of the numerical analysis necessary to this purpose was performed. The results showed a pattern of impacts familiar to the mining industry:

THE term mountain bump describes the sudden rupture of one or more coal pillars under excessive stress. These bursts occur with varying degrees of violence and sometimes include adjacent strata, especially the bottom rock. Many failures do not develop enough violence to be dangerous and are regarded as an aid to coal production, but severe occurrences are accompanied by tons of flying coal, dense clouds of dust, and excessive gas emission. Such bursts sometimes throw heavy machinery several feet. Major factors to be considered in the problem are the nature of the strata above and below the seam and the depth of cover. Bumps are classified as to their nature, extent of damage, and point of occurrence, e. g., face bump, coal bump, high side bump, low side pavement bump, and district bump.
