Low-temPeRatUre carbonization needs no introduction to the literature on coal. This paper will attempt no review of that literature; it tells the story of the commercial development of one of the processes for carbonizing coal at so-called low temperatures, dealing with the technology and economics of the process rather than with the design of equipment. The process used is that covered by the patents of C. B. Wisner, with improvements and changes made by the Pittsburgh Coal Carbonization Co. The important and novel feature of the process is the phenomenon of making the product in ball form (Fig. 1). Melting coal dust into smokeless solid fuel in an apparatus as simple as a revolving cylinder of ordinary mild steel has been proved to be practical. Furthermore, it has been found that the process has a wide application, for by applying a knowledge of why and how this balling action is accomplished, the apparatus can be designed and adapted to treat any coal that has a certain minimum agglutinating property. The operating plant is 20 miles west of Pittsburgh, adjacent to the Champion preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. The coal used is cleaned minus ?-in. or finer sizes. The products are low-tem-perature coke, tar and tar products. Present capacity is 7000 tons per month of low-temperature coke and 140,000 gal. of tar. There is no surplus gas for sale, and none of the light oils are stripped from the gas. The coke is marketed in two sizes, 1 to 2 in. and 1 to 6 in., through retail coal dealers for domestic consumption in hand-fired furnaces, and for fireplace fuel. The smaller size is bagged by dealers. Crude tar and many distillates and road tars are sold. The Upper Robe (Robe Gorge) deposits occur in Kumina Creek and the Robe River, some 20-40 km upstream from mining operations at Pannawonica. The Gorge Deposits were rec- ognised, mapped and sampled in 1962-3 and re- examined in detail in 1971. Approximately 180 mineralized occurrences were mapped in 1971 on 1:4800 scale and 50 of these were remapped in detail at 1:1200 scale. Eighty cross sections were measured and sampled and 300 geological maps prepared. In addition 88 holes totalling 7388 feet were drilled in three occurrences considered to have the greatest potential. The Gorge Deposits occur in the Robe Pisolite unit which forms thin remnant crusts, bay fillings and occasional cut-off meanders along the edge of the present streams. Less than 50 of the deposits have tonnage potential of one million or more. Consequently exploit- ation of the Gorge reserves must be considered as a very uncertain, long range possibility because the deposits are small and scattered throughout the gorges in the area, thereby necessitating costly railroad spur lines to gain mining access. SIGNIFICANT general developments took place in the Far East during 1964, with far-reaching repercussions on the mineral and industrial economies of individual countries and the region as a whole. Japan, during this, "the Year of the Open Door," ushered in the era of industrial maturity, greater independence in economic policy, and expanded technical assistance to less developed countries. Symbolic of its dynamic economic growth is the fact that Japan out-produced the Federal Republic of Germany in steel during 1964 to take over a third-ranking world position. Mainland China, recovering from the "Leap Forward" debacle, made significant gains in industrial output. Mainland Chinese trade with Japan was on the upswing, and discussions were held between the Chinese and the Soviets for possibly resuming Soviet aid in industrial and mineral development. Meanwhile, United States aid to Taiwan was being phased out because of progress achieved. Rapprochement between South Korea and Japan was imminent late in 1964, a factor which may well affect South Korean mineral development. The Indonesian-Malaysian confrontation created economic difficulties in both countries. The war in Viet-Nam seriously disrupted industrial activities, particularly in the south.

The Bureau of Mines used micro fracture density analysis of quartz grains in thin sections and diametric pulse velocity measurements along preblast and postblast cores to determine the nature and extent of rock damage produced by small (0.25-,0.50-,1.0-, and 2.0-kg) charges of high intensity explosive (C-4) in granite. Pulse velocities from the postblast cores were significantly lower than velocities from the preblast cores and, with the core logs, provided clear identification of the upper and sometimes the lower limits of most severe damage. These zones ranged from about 1.68 ft for the 0.25-kg blast to 4.16 ft for the 2.0-kg blast. Microfracture densities from postblast cores were significantly higher and more variable than densities measured from preblast cores. The microfracture density measurements showed that microscopic damage was present far past the zones of most severe damage as delineated by the pulse velocity logs and core logs. An exponential relation-ship was observed between the micro fracture density levels and the charge weight.

Radio Detection and Ranging is an active form of remote sensing. The-imaging system sends out a source of electromagnetic energy to 'illuminate' the terrain and then records the energy returned. The wavelengths used by radar are in the microwave region and vary from a few millimetres to about a metre. Radar systems are independent of lighting conditions and weather. In addition, targets may be illuminated in the optimum direction to enhance features of interest. New Zealand was one of the principal investigators on the Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B) experiment, part of the payload on Challenger Mission 41-G in October 1984. Data collected over New Zealand was restricted to two very poor quality optical images and one poor quality digital data take. The digital image covered the ranges between the Hawke Bay-Wairoa Basin and the Volcanic Plateau. Variations of texture in this image frequently were indicative of variations in lithology and induration. The image also clearly depicted major faults where these had had a significant effect on the topography.

Although certain physical mechanical properties of rocks have been claimed to give an estimate of penetration rate in percussive drilling, the authors' work shows that the correlation of penetration rate with individual rock properties is Poor. The authors have developed a good correlation between penetration rate and a set of rock properties but the relation is complex. Energy per unit volume has been used as a measure of penetration rate in percussive drilling by Hustrulid and Fairhurst; however, their test setup is large wing a full size drill bit. The authors determined the minimum energy for unit volume Ev min for any rock at the optimum index angle in a simple laboratory drop tester wing a sharp microbit with a tip angle of ll0°. This Ev min has been found to correlate well with penetration rate obtained in controlled laboratory drilling in different rocks for different stages of bit wear. A comprehensive relation has been developed between penetration rate and Ev min.

"The Jacobina project in Bahia, Brazil commenced operations in 2004 with a design capacity of 4,200 tpd. A project development plan to increase plant capacity to 6,500 tpd will be discussed. The project included an evaluation of the existing circuit and addressed bottlenecks in the crushing, milling, sedimentation, leaching and tailings transport. These circuits and the methodology used to provide higher capacity will be presented.INTRODUCTIONThe Jacobina mine is located in the state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil approximately 330 km northwest of the state capital city of Salvador and 9 km from the town of Jacobina. The Jacobina Mine (Figure 1) is owned by Jacobina Mineração e Comércio, a wholly owned subsidiary of Yamana Gold Inc.The gold mineralization of the Jacobina mine is hosted within quartz pebble conglomerate reefs of the Serra do Córrego Formation which together with the Rio do Ouro Formation forms the Serra do Jacobina mountain chain.The Serra do Jacobina mountains have been mined for gold since the late 17th century. Since the 1970’s, the Jacobina mine has been operated by Anglo American, Williams Resources Inc., Desert Sun Mining Inc. The mine is currently owned by Yamana Gold Inc.In December of 1998, operations at Jacobina were suspended and the property was placed under care and maintenance. Desert Sun Mining Inc. began exploring the property in 2002 and eventually purchased the Jacobina mine in 2003. In 2003, a feasibility study was completed that evaluated the economics of re-developing the mining operations and expanding gold production. In 2004, refurbishment and re-development of the mining operations began and the milling facility throughput capacity was expanded from 1.08 to 1.512 Mtpy (3,000 to 4,200 tpd). The milling operations were commissioned in the 1st quarter of 2005 and commercial production was declared 1 July 2005. In April 2006, Yamana Gold Inc. acquired the Jacobina mine through its acquisition of Desert Sun Mining Inc."

The mining industry, like most other industries, has had a difficult couple of years. What are your thoughts on the industry?s direction in the next few years? I am bullish on our industry. There is no question in my mind that the quality of life we enjoy today is largely a result of our past successes in the minerals and mining sector. I am equally certain that the sustainability of that quality of life and the aspirations of the rest of the world to attain that same level of lifestyle will depend hugely on our future successes and will be the driver for our industry to continue to excel and prosper. Surely, there are going to be challenges along the way. These challenges are not only from the public, regulators and various governing bodies, but also from our industry?s own self regulating efforts. However, we have demonstrated throughout the past several decades that we have the capability to meet these challenges head on and come out ahead.

The investigation provides a method of efficiency evaluation among several kinds of tools employed to cut different types of rocks. A ballistic test stand incorporated with a modified Hopkinson bar was used to simulate a percussive drilling tool. An Apple IIe microcomputer was employed for high speed data acquisition and numerical analysis. A newly developed method for remote monitoring the rock-tool interaction, including contact force, bit penetration and energy transmission,is presented in the paper. The Parkes process lead refinery of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, was built by the International Smelting & Refining CO. to treat the lead bullion produced by its Tooele plant, at Tooele, Utah. The plant was designed and constructed under the direction of the writer. Ground was broken Apr. 16, 1912, and exactly six months later the plant was in operation and lead was being cast. The capacity of the plant, running 25 days per month, is 5,000 tons. The four products of the plant are common lead, corroding lead, antimonial lead, and Dore bullion. The site is an area, 64 acres in extent, lying north of 151st Street, between McCook Avenue and the Canal. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal, and Pennsylvania Railroad enter the yard at the plant. There are five storage tracks and space for storing 100 cars in the yard. the main lead to the storage tracks passes over a 100-ton track scale on entering the yard.

The establishment of vegetation onto open cut mine spoil is dependant on the nature of the soil and rock strata of the overburden. Experience has shown that in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland the nature of the minespoil changes considerably as subsequent and deeper mining strips intercept changing rock strata. The different mixes of strata at the surface of reshaped spoilpiles can produce variable response in the sown vegetation cover. It is usual that land features of mine sites are known in detail and are depicted on mine or locality maps. Subsurface strata and lithology descriptions are available and are used for planning of open cut mining operations. Surface and subsurface data can also be used to estimate the intrinsic nature of overburden through the use of fence diagrams. Lithology at points along a mined strip can be obtained and used to describe overburden. Indications are that correlations exist between salinity of overburden components and the response of vegetation. The developed procedure thus becomes a useful tool for the prediction of revegetation Practices.

THE construction of Norris Dam, built by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Clinch River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, involved the production of coarse and fine aggregate for approximately 1,000,000 cu. yd. of concrete. A hammer-mill plant for the manufacture of sand from quarried rock was indicated as the most economical method of providing this material. The abrasive character of the feed as compared to the average hammer-mill feed made it necessary to control operations rather closely, and this resulted in the accumulation of many data bearing on production and maintenance. This paper will deal only with three specific sets of data, accompanied by such general information as may be necessary to explain the conditions under which they were obtained and followed by discussions on the relation of silica content to hammer wear, comparative costs of slugger and stirrup hammers, and comparative costs of tool-steel and manganese-steel grate bars. Coarse Aggregate Aggregate for the concrete poured at Norris Dam came from a dolomite quarry within 2000 ft. of the west abutment of the dam. Geologically this rock is known as a Knox dolomite. A typical chemical analysis is given in Table 1. Diesel-powered underground mining equipment is generally accepted as the most productive, safest, and most efficient equipment used in underground mining operations. Widespread application of this equipment to underground mining is restricted, however, largely because of the difficulty of controlling the diesel engine exhaust emissions. This paper briefly examines control devices currently available for underground application, and also discusses the theory and mechanics of controlling diesel emissions with particulate traps and filters.

Deep hydrothermal fluids adjacent to the Alpine Fault move through the brittle-ductile transition to mix with convecting fluids from near surface environments. These tectonically driven fluids evolve mainly from prograde metamorphism at mid crustal depth (ten kilometres) within the ductile regime which has been elevated due to advection and drag on the fault plane. Through the onset of brittle failure and cataclasis within Alpine Fault mylonites, fluid overpressuring results in hydrofracturing and localized implosion. Along the length of the Alpine Fault, hydrothermal alteration varies on most levels (Table 1). There is an observable increase in Fe-Mg carbonate between the Waitaha and Taramakau Rivers (between Ross and Aurthur's Pass, respectively). Field studies concentrate to the north east of the Arahura River, noted for historical mineral wealth. Late meteoric fluids move through cataclasite, brecciated mylonite, and other open fractures. Chloritisation is the major retrogressive phase. Dolomitic hydrofracture veins (Figure 1) within coherent mylonites contain iron and copper sulphides. Notably, the enrichment in Fe-Mg carbonate towards the Alpine-Hope Fault intersection seems to represent a region of enhanced permeability possibly related to shallow seismicity, increased regional faulting, footwall variation, strike-slip dip-slip distribution, and/or topographical anomalies (ie saddles). Isotope studies identifying an 'Inboard Fault Gouge Calcite Zone' correlate to values from the Main Divide region at the headwaters of the Arahura River (Browning Pass-Wilberforce Valley) (Becker et aI, 2000). These correlations are supported by rare arsenic anomalies (avg l06 ppm n = 5, Figure 2) found in both regions which suggest that fluids may be interconnected at depth.

Introduction THE Atlin Mining District is in the northwest corner of the Province of British Columbia. Ruby Creek, where the operation to be described is situated, is 17 miles east of the town of Atlin and about 18 miles south of the south line of Yukon Territory (Fig. 1). Gold was discovered in the district in January, 1898, and the production to date from placer mines has been $4,518,000, according to the reports of the Minister of Mines for-the province. Geology The essential points in the regional geology are given in the following paragraphs. Long erosion produced a plane-like surface slightly above sea level with a few peaks and ridges.1 A gradual uplift followed and. erosion increased, the streams cut deeper, the cuts so made being afterward increased by glaciation. The ice straightened and planed the slopes of the main valleys and widened and lowered their floors, in some cases flooring the valleys with silt, sand, gravel, and clay. As the glaciers rapidly retreated, lakes were formed.

This paper describes a practical methodology, based on numerical modeling, for the prediction of progressive failure of underground-mine stopes having cable-bolt support. A case study of the 40-761 scope at the Kidd Creek mine, Timmins, Ontario, Canada is presented. Scope 40-761 was mined by blast hole open sloping in 1986 and was a lead scope within a mining block located between levels 36-1 and 38-2. Initially designed to peak at level 38-2, the scope back caved upwards =40 m towards level 36-1. After caving began, cable bolts were installed above the stope from level 36-1. The stope eventually stopped caving when the falling rock mass encountered a sufficiently high cable density. This paper provides details of the geomechanical data and modeling results of the case study. Numerical modeling of cable bolts around the mine stoke was carried out using a finite-element modeling software. The software, known as e-z tools, was developed by the first author.
