A method is proposed to estimate the gold content of the ore in the size intervals during size reduction. The method uses the population balance model to trace the gold deportment through the size fractions and monitor the generation of liberated gold grains during the size reduction. The model is calibrated using batch grinding test results of a gold ore. There are approximately 3000 bibliographic entries coded into the BIRS system. The bibliographic retrieval system was designed to be run by the general data management System 2000. The information system with entries of coal research, land reclamation and other energy and environmental studies is up and on line. As more entries are coded they are loaded into the system.

THE observations here following are the result of an examination made as to the feasibility of extending the South Mountain Railroad from Pine Grove to Waynesborough, and of the commercial value of the ore through which such extension would be made to pass. The road at present built and in operation has a junction with the Cumberland Valley Railroad, half a mile east of Carlisle, and extends southward to Pine Grove, a distance of 176 miles. The extension proposed will add to it near 27 miles, making its total length 44$, more than 23 of which will run through, or in close proximity to, beds of ore. A review is given of progress made to- wards the development of personal gravimetric dust sampling for risk assessment on South African gold mines. The present strategy is critically examined on the basis of principles for assessing health hazard from dust exposure. Reasons are advanced for replacing the konimeter with a gravimetric system based on full shift personal sampling. Constraints imposed by local characteristics of gold mines are used to illustrate the difficulty in finding suitable instrumentation for measuring personal exposure to respirable silica.

Previous to the appearance of Dr. Crane's paper, there has been little record of connected observation or rigid speculation as applied to the cause of rifling. Replying to one of Dr. Crane's letters of inquiry, I ventured my opinion that the cause of rifling was a complex problem in physics, which I had not attempted to solve up to that time, except to ascribe it to the general cause of rotation and vibration of the rods. Jaspilites and underlying basalt contacts of the Archaean volcano- sedimentary Grpo Parß Group, Carajßs, host giant iron mineralisation in the ~100-km long, E-W trending Carajßs fold. Preliminary, unpublished geochronological data point to a Palaeoproterozoic mineralisation event. Geochemically, jaspilites are typical volcanogenic banded iron formations. Basalts exhibit evidence of spilitic seawater interaction. Iron-associated hydrothermal alteration of mafic rocks was induced by fluid infiltration in amygdales, with development of chlorite- and hematite-dominated zones. In the case of jaspilites, iron mineralisation encompasses: partial replacement of jaspilitic microcrystalline hematite by blasts of martitic magnetite; jasper recrystallisation, producing fine-grained, hematite-free granoblastic quartz; martite recrystallisation, forming lobate¦subhedral hematite; pervasive porosity development by quartz-chert leaching; incipient cavity filling by microlamellar hematite; and advanced filling by coarser, euhedral and comb-textured, tabular- shaped hematite.Peak hydrothermal ore textures indicate typical epithermal-crust conditions, supported by preliminary fluid-inclusion calculations at 160 - 200¦C. Such temperatures and extreme fluid-to-rock ratios during alteration must have exceeded the ambient metamorphic conditions, with the infiltrating fluid relatively hot and capable of leaching SiO2. Therefore, mineralisation developed over exhumed, Archaean, brittly deformed rocks, with mineral associations representative of very low- to low-grade metamorphism. Considering that chlorite (¦talc) abounds in mafic rocks; hydrothermal albite is developed; dolomite fills veins and vugs; the typical rare-earth-element (REE) pattern of jaspilites is significantly modified in higher-grade hard hematite ores (higher LREE); pyrite, copper sulfide minerals and rare gold occur in association with carbonate-quartz-rich alteration zones, it is suggested that an alkaline, H2O-Fe-CO2 mineralising fluid dominated, also containing species like S¦Cu¦Au. Peak-mineralising conditions are likely to have resulted from a single, evolving fluid, via incipient- through advanced-stage alteration phases. The porous, high-grade soft hematite-type ore (SH), rich in microlamellar and anhedral hematite, must have derived from interaction with this relatively hot SiO2-leaching fluid, whereas the high-grade massive hard hematite-type ore (MH) developed due to closer fluid-rock temperature equilibrium conditions, attained by mineral reactions, with relative increase in the Fe/Σcations ratios allowing the precipitation of subhedral-tabular hematite that partially cements the soft-hematite ore. SH and MH hematite ore types must thus reflect intermediate and high fluid:rock ratios, respectively. Since the N5 deposit is to date understood to contain the largest amount of the MH ore, its units are interpreted as the loci of the highest fluid:rock ratios in the district. Preliminary mineralogical information regarding the S11 deposit of the Serra Sul (south range) implies higher-temperature conditions. The near-equant grain size and the granoblastic intergrain relationship, coupled with the presence of riebeckite, augitic pyroxene and garnet, suggest hornfels textures. The data collected, though still relatively sparse, permit the speculation that the immense driving force for the Carajßs world-class iron deposits was a relatively shallow, igneous-related hydrothermal system. If such a model is correct, then the Carajßs Palaeoproterozoic iron deposits could represent an end-member of the iron oxide-copper-gold hydrothermal system in the province.

In this research the possibility of pelletizing high grade fluorsoar fines or flotation concentrates with the use of calcined colemanite as binder is investigated, and the room temperature and elevated temperature strengths of these pellets are compared with those of pellets which are obtained by using bentonite as binder. Pellets of 10-12 mm. size and having 10% calcined colemanite showed a much higher room temperature strength than those containing 5% benonite, both being endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes. However, when the same batch of pellets were tested at elevated temperatures of 250º to 500°C, bentonite gave better results. X-ray tests showed that in the pellets endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes the original crystal structure of fluorite mineral is preserved.

A mathematical model for the performance of a vibrating screen is developed in terms of an oversize partition curve. This is a normalized curve for any assemblage of particles presented for screening when their size is normalized with respect to the 50 per cent passing size (d50 ) under the prevailing screening conditions. Based on the throughfall aperture (hT) of the wire mesh on the deck, the effects of oversize (% >hT), half-size under (% <0.5 hT), deck location and feed rate were evaluated using the existing screen sizing information. All these variables and also the near-mesh (1.25 hTx 0.75 hT) content (%) of the feed affect the d50. Performance data from different decks of a double-deck screen with various feed rates, size distributions and screen apertures were used to evaluate the near-mesh factor. Effects of wet screening and material bulk density are also incorporated in the model. This generalized model is useful for the simulation of a multiple-deck screen. It furnishes the sieve analysis information of all the deck output streams and therefore has a potential use in the over-all circuit evaluation when used in conjunction with relevant crushing and grinding performance models. An example illustrating the prediction capabilities of the model is given.

Computer simulation is a well-accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large or complex operating systems. Less common is the use of simulation as a design aid, but FluorÆs simulation group regularly applies discrete and continuous simulation models to assist with optimisation and risk management in a wide variety of mining, mineral processing and logistics applications. To demonstrate the wide applicability of simulation modelling as a design aid, this paper describes three case examples from FluorÆs recent work that cover both discrete and continuous operations.

Evidence is presented to show that certain coals can be super-cleaned, using present coal preparation processes, to reduce sulfur below levels that are commonly believed to be possible. The evidence points to the need to develop continuous sorting methods by which coal coming from a mine can be segregated so that different raw coal types can be processed separately to produce a super-clean coal in addition to coals cleaned to more common levels of sulfur. Evidence is presented and techniques discussed that may be applicable for making the method feasible.

Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970?s. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator?s area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator?s hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.

The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

CREAM is an acronym for coal recovery, evaluation, analysis and management and is a business improvement project at BMAÆs Goonyella Riverside mine that is focussed on maximising coal recovered. In August 2003, Goonyella Riverside was set a challenge to quantify coal loss and dilution and their relationship to cost, revenue and ultimately profit. While the mine was confident in its site forecasts of recovery (and loss), it was clear that the traditional measurement and analysis systems were inadequate to firstly, identify key loss areas and mechanisms and secondly, successfully quantify the benefit of various coal recovery initiatives. The path that BMA Goonyella Riverside has travelled to maximise coal recovered can be divided into four key steps: Mapping the process û This step involved the development of a coal flow process map for Goonyella Riverside that stepped through each component of the process from the coal reserve to the customer and identified key measurement points for the purposes of reconciliation. Understanding coal loss and identifying opportunities û This step involved conducting two detailed Reserve to Customer projects at the mine site to track a block of coal from the reserve to the customer and to gain a greater understanding of the relationship of dilution, coal loss mechanisms, revenue and costs associated with recovering additional coal. Coal data systems development û Two important coal data systems have been developed and implemented at Goonyella Riverside in the past twelve months, namely SnowdenÆs Coal Reconcilor and SeamFix. These systems enable coal losses and dilution to be quantified and reconciled back to the initial coal reserve. Implementation of loss reduction initiatives û This step involved the formation of a business improvement project referred to as æCREAMÆ in August 2004, for the purposes of improving pit coal recovery and maximising business value. To date a series of coal recovery trials have been run in a number of pits at Goonyella Riverside that have yielded significant improvements in business value. The key to the success of this project has been the discipline to follow a defined process map, management commitment through resourcing and shared key performance indicators, a successful acceptance strategy resulting in holistic ownership and the implementation of sustainable reconciliation systems. Coal loss and dilution are now quantifiable and their relationship to cost, revenue and ultimately profit is well understood. This paper discusses the process that Goonyella Riverside has adopted to maximise coal recovered.

Since 1977, Amax Coal Co.&apos;s Belle Ayr mine near Gillette, WY, has been the largest producing coal mine in the US. In its 10 years of operation more than 90 Mt (100 million st) of coal have been shipped from the mine&apos;s facilities to electric generating plants across the country. It is thought to be the largest amount ever produced in US history from a single coal mine. The railroad is Belle Ayr&apos;s lifeline for moving this massive volume from a relatively isolated corner of northeastern Wyoming. There are no waterways for barge traffic, and highway truck hauling would be impractical considering the quantity and distance of coal to be moved. Transportation in the Powder River Basin-at least for the present-is strictly unit trains. An average of four unit trains daily load at Belle Ayr. These trains average 108 cars long, with a capacity of 91 t (100 st) per car. Burlington Northern Railroad serves the Powder River Basin, but locomotives supplied by Union Pacific, Milwaukee Road, and Kansas City Southern are a common site as well, since coal will often travel these lines too on its way to utility plants in Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Oregon. When Belle Ayr opened transportation in the Powder River Basin was in an early development stage. As the first large-scale coal shipper in the area, Belle Ayr was the only user of a 27-km (17-mile) railroad spur south of Gillette. Other mines, however, were to open soon on the abundant, low-sulfur reserves. Today, less than a decade after Belle Ayr&apos;s debut, 13 large-capacity mines operate near Gillette. The 27-km (17-mile) spur that once served only Belle Ayr has been extended 177 km (110 miles) south to service other mines as well, and to tie into a major rail line in central Wyoming. The Powder River Basin is now served by a wishbone-shaped track configuration that allows train movement north into Montana, south into Colorado, and east into Nebraska for connections across the country. Operations at Belle Ayr are closely tied to train arrivals and departures, with coordination essential between mine operations and rail personnel. "Engineering practices have shown that the skip-fault longwall mining is frequently used when faults with offsets larger than 1 Om are present. Since the skip-fault longwall mining not only reduces the recovery rate of coal reserves, but also increases the cost due to developing another setup room on the opposite side of the fault and moves the longwall into it. The coal pillar so created induced residual stress in and thus affects the safe mining of adjacent coal seams. In order to investigate the influence on panel layout and retreat by a l 6.5m offset normal fault, the similar material simulation model was constructed based on the geological and engineering conditions of No.13 coal seam in the western district of Liuzhuang coal mine employing the down-dip longwall mining. The characteristics of deformation, movement and failure of the overlying strata and abutment pressure when the face cut through the hangingwall and footwall of a normal fault were obtained. There were significant differences between the hangingwall and footwall as conformed by the equilibrium structure model. The results showed that superposition of the tectonic stress from a normal fault of large offset and that induced by mining is one of key factors that lead the severe pressure difficult to control during panel retreating from the hangingwall to footwall. Accordingly, the technical solutions for a fully mechanized mining face directly cutting through the fault are presented and optimized, and the applications of the technical solution in Panels 171301and171303 of Liuzhuang mine enabled them to complete the mining safely and efficiently. INTRODUCTIONFaults have been one of the important technical factors in underground coal mining l1-2i. Engineering practice has shown that the methods of mining through the faults depend on the seam thickness, seam dip angle, offset of fault throw, equipment height, rock strength, and advancing direction l3-5l. In the fully-mechanized longwall mining, the face normally proceeds to cut through the fault directly if the offset of the fault less than 5m, and to skip Uump) the fault if the offset is larger than 5m. In the former case, the most important problem is to efficiently control or avoid roof fall accidents (i.e., crushing, falling, pushover, and rock burst). In the latter case, the most important problem is very expensive to drive a new setup room and move the face equipment to it. The skipped coal pillar may poses problems for mining in adjacent seams."

AN earthquake caused an upheaval in Japan, started fires which destroyed large parts of Tokio, Yokohama and Hakone, and with tidal waves and other consequences extinguished some 68,000 lives and much property right at the beginning of September." Also on Sept. 1, the Italians, offended by the murder of members of the Albanian frontier commission by Greeks, occupied the Island of Corfu, which was viewed as an act of war by Italy against Greece. An appeal by the Greeks to the League of Nations was flouted by the Italians. One of the consequences of these affairs was to throw discredit upon the League of Nations and to excite doubts whether it would be able to survive. On Sept. 19, Greece made the formal apology to the Allies collectively and following that the Italians with-drew from Corfu. During this month also the embroilment between Italy and Jugoslavia over the matter of Fiume came again into prominence. In Bulgaria there was a communist uprising which was promptly put down by the government. The whole country was put under martial law. On Sept. 13 there began a military revolution at Barcelona, in Spain. On Sept. 14 the king of Spain accepted the revolution and charged the leader with the formation of a new government. Cosgrave was reelected president of the Irish Free State, without there being any disorder. Great Britain paid the remainder of her silver debt to the United States, thus writing finis to the Pitman Act. The position of Germany went from bad to worse during September. The mark has become valueless and the business that is being conducted is largely on a gold basis once more, in terms of dollars and pounds sterling. Chancellor Stresseman announced Sept. 24 that the German government had decided to abandon pas-sive resistance to the French and Belgians immediately and unconditionally.

The inherent weakness of the Zincor and similar iron removal processes is the relatively high undissolved zinc loss associated with the iron residue. High soluble zinc losses also occur due to poor filterability of the iron residue even though it may be limited to intermittent events. This work focussed on defining the optimum operating window for the Zincor iron removal process where iron is mainly removed in the form of amorphous, intermediate iron phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite. In terms of the main operating conditions, optimum filterability was achieved under the following conditions: pH of 3.0, temperature as high as practically possible (70C), at least 25 kg/m3 seeding, and a retention time of at least 4 hours. When increasing the temperature from 60C to 70C, the required residence time decreased by almost 50%. Undissolved zinc loss was also reduced from 8% to between 2% and 3% by using a basic zinc sulphate/zinc oxide mixture as neutralising agent to effect iron removal.

DURING the month of March there was some lifting of the veil, revealing somewhat of the maelstrom in the economics and politics of the world. Great Britain was in throes of political controversy, with threats of resignation by Lloyd George and a general election to ensue. Ireland was uneasy with internecine squabbles. The leaders of the opposing sides have been summoned to London for a conference which Parlia-ment believes offers the only hope of a solution of the present difficulties. France, awakening more and more to grim realities, learned of a budget for 1922 calling for more than 50 billion francs, or nearly one-third of the estimated national production, with the prospect that after this deduction is made there will be nothing left over what is required for the immediate support of the, people, and that on a reduced scale. Germany, although hard at work, found itself coming closer and closer to financial collapse and repeated its intimations that it would be unable to keep up with the provisional payments of 31 million gold marks to the Reparations Commission every 10 days as arranged at Cannes. Russia suffered more acutely from the famine and there were evidences of political insubordination among the Ukrainians. Egypt was in trouble arising from determination to win independence. About the middle of March the complete independence of Egypt was established and that country passed into somewhat the same relation-ship toward Great Britain that Panama has to the United States. At the head of the Adriatic, Fiume came into notice again with disorders threatening to produce conflict between Italy and Jugoslavia. In the Near East there were forebodings of trouble through resumption this spring. of the war between Greece and Turkey.
